The Short-Term Effects of Heavy Thinning on Selected Soil Carbon Pools and Microbial Activity in a Young Aleppo Pine Forest

Pinus halepensis Miller is a widespread tree species in the western Mediterranean basin, where very dense monospecific stands can be found, especially in natural regeneration after forest fires. Silvicultural thinning can reduce the competition of trees for natural resources and favour their development, although its effect depends on the habitat. The present study aims to know the effects on the soil at the physicochemical and microbiological levels after a heavy thinning in a young pine forest stand with a high stocking density. The stand is on a slope where the soil depth tends to decrease with altitude, and shows changes in its physicochemical properties between the upper and lower zones. Several soil carbon fractions (i.e., soil organic carbon (SOC), water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), and microbial biomass carbon (MBC)), microbial activity (basal soil respiration (BSR)) and enzyme activities (acid phosphatase (AP) and urease (UA)) were analysed at specific dates over a period of about five years after a heavy thinning. The changes in organic matter content were abrupt in the slope, conditioning the observed differences. It is highlighted that the SOC and WSOC contents in the mineral soil were 2.5- and 3.5-fold significantly higher, respectively, in the upper shallow zone compared to the lower deeper zone. This was also reflected in significantly higher levels of gravimetric water content (GWC) and MBC (both about 1.4-fold higher), with higher levels of BSR and UA, and 2.5-fold significantly higher levels of AP. As a result, most of the properties studied showed no significant differences between the thinning treatment and the untreated control. Results varying between dates, with a strong dependence on climate (soil temperature and humidity) of WSOC and UA. It can be concluded that the heavy thinning applied in this short-term case study favoured the growth conditions of the pine without negatively affecting the soil properties studied.

WSOC in accumulation mode aerosols: Distribution and relationship with BrC light absorption at an urban background site

This paper presents the outcomes of a one-month long campaign (Jan 11, 2021 to Feb 11, 2021) of size segregated particulate matter (PM) in the accumulation mode (AM). Samples were collected at an urban background station (southeastern Iberian Peninsula) using a micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI). PM mass and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) were subsequently measured. The main goals of this research were: (1) to explore differences in WSOC mass size distributions under different meteorological conditions and (2) to determine the most efficient size for light absorption by WSOC. For the second objective, measurements of absorption coefficients (σap,λ) were obtained by means of an Aethalometer (AE33). Significant differences in WSOC concentrations and σap,λ values during stagnation episodes compared to non-event days were observed. Increases in WSOC concentrations during these episodes were most likely associated with the photochemical production of secondary compounds (in small-size ranges of the AM) and with water uptake (in large-size ranges of the AM). The average σap,λ value during this type of event was 2.6 higher than for non-event days. No significant increases in WSOC levels were detected under Saharan dust events. The average contribution of BrC to light absorption at 370 nm was ∼35%, revealing a significant influence of BrC on the absorption process. High contributions from BrC to light absorption were associated with AAE values above 1.5 and, in general, with high WSOC concentrations. WSOC in the smallest size mode (0.25 μm) was mainly emitted from biomass burning (BB) and showed the highest light absorption efficiency.

Size-resolved water-soluble organic carbon and its significant contribution to aerosol liquid water

Size-segregated aerosols collected in Beijing from 2021 to 2022 were used to investigate the contribution of organic aerosols to the aerosol liquid water content (ALWC), the influencing factors of ALWC, and the concentrations and size distribution characteristics of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) after clean air actions. The results showed that the concentration of WSOC in particulate matter (PM)1.8 was 3.52 ± 2.43 μg/m3 during the sampling period. Obvious changes were observed in the size distribution of WSOC after clean air actions, which may be attributed to the enhancement of atmospheric oxidation capacity and the decrease in PM concentration. The contribution of organic aerosols to the ALWC in fine PM was 18.1 % during the sampling period, which was more significant at lower particles concentration and smaller particle size ranges. The ambient relative humidity (RH) and the ratio of NO3−/SO42− had an apparent influence on ALWC. The continuous increase in the nitrate proportion significantly reduced the deliquescence point of the aerosols, making them prone to hygroscopic growth at lower RH. Analysis of the relation among nitrogen oxidation ratio (sulfur oxidation ratio), ALWC and PM1.8 mass concentrations suggests that organic matter has a significant effect on the formation of secondary inorganic aerosols in the initial phase of pollution formation and plays a crucial role in aerosol pollution formation in Beijing. These results are conducive to understanding the formation mechanism of aerosols and provide scientific data and theoretical support for the formulation of more effective emission-reduction measures.

Formation of In‐Cloud Aqueous‐Phase Secondary Organic Matter and Related Characteristic Molecules

AbstractThe formation process of in‐cloud aqueous‐phase secondary organic matter (aqSOM) and its characteristics are unclear. Herein, water‐soluble inorganic ions, oxalate, and water‐soluble organic carbon (WSOC) were determined in cloud water and aerosol (PM2.5) samples simultaneously collected at a remote mountain site in southern China during spring 2018 and winter 2020. The molecular compositions of water‐soluble organic matter (WSOM) in cloud water and aerosols were analyzed by a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer in negative electrospray ionization (ESI‐) mode. The results showed that the mean concentration of WSOC was 6.27–8.54 mg C L−1 in cloud water and 0.60–1.37 μg C m−3 in aerosols. The strong correlation observed between WSOM and aqueous secondary matter (e.g., NO3− and oxalate), the positive matrix factorization results, and the elevated WSOM/K+ ratios observed in cloud water suggested enhanced aqSOM formation in cloud water. According to random forest analysis, the factors related to in‐cloud WSOM variation mainly included secondary ions, K+, cloud water pH, and atmospheric NOx. Additionally, 37 characteristic in‐cloud aqSOM molecules, classified as ‐Ox, ‐NOx, ‐N2Ox, and ‐N1‐2OxS, mainly consisting of dicarboxylic acids, nitrophenols, and dinitrophenols, were identified using linear discriminant analysis effect size (LefSe). The characteristic N‐ and S‐containing molecules in in‐cloud aqSOM with carbon numbers >10 had low or extremely low volatility; therefore, they might contribute to secondary organic aerosol formation after droplet evaporation. The results revealed the modifying effects of in‐cloud processes on aerosol organic composition at the molecular level and could improve our understanding of aerosol–cloud interactions.

Vertical distribution characteristics of soil organic carbon and vegetation types under different elevation gradients in Cangshan, Dali.

The Cangshan National Nature Reserve of Dali City was adopted as the research object to clarify the vertical distribution characteristics of soil organic carbon (SOC) and vegetation types at different elevations in western Yunnan. The contents of SOC, light fraction organic carbon (LFOC), heavy fraction organic carbon (HFOC), and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in the 0-30 cm soil layer at different elevations (2,400, 2,600, 2,800, 3,000, 3,200, 3,400, and 3,600 m) were determined, and the above-ground vegetation types at different elevations were investigated. Results showed that the SOC content was the highest in 0-20 cm surface soil and gradually decreased with the deepening of the soil layer. It increased then decreased with the increase in elevation, and it peaked at 3,000 m. The LFOC content was between 1.28 and 7.3515 gkg-1. It exhibited a decreasing trend and little change in profile distribution. The HFOC content ranged between 12.9727 and 23.3708gkg-1; it increased then decreased with the increase in profile depth. The WSOC content was between 235.5783 and 392.3925 mgkg-1, and the response sensitivity to elevation change was weak. With the increase in elevation, WSOC/SOC and LFOC/SOC showed a similar trend, whereas HFOC presented an opposite trend. This observation indicates that the active organic carbon content at 3,600 m was lower than that at 2,400 m, and the middle elevation was conducive to the storage of active organic carbon. Meanwhile, the physical and chemical properties of soil affected the distribution of organic carbon to a certain extent. The vegetation type survey showed that the above-ground dominant species within 2,400-2,800 m were Pinus yunnanensis and Pinus armandii. Many evergreen and mixed coniferous broadleaf forests were distributed from 3,000 m to 3,200 m. Species of Abies delavayi were mainly distributed from 3,400m to 3,600m. This research serves as a reference for the study of forest soil carbon stability in high-elevation areas and plays an important role in formulating reasonable land use management policies, protecting forest soil, reducing organic carbon loss, and investigating the carbon sequestration stability of forest ecosystems.

Development and performance evaluation of online monitors for near real-time measurement of total and water-soluble organic carbon in fine and coarse ambient PM

In this study, we developed two online monitors for total organic carbon (TOC) and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) measurements in fine (dp < 2.5 μm) and coarse (2.5 μm < dp < 10 μm) particulate matter (PM), respectively. Their performance has been evaluated in laboratory and field tests to demonstrate the feasibility of using these monitors to measure near real-time concentrations, with consideration of their potential for being employed in long-term measurements. The fine PM collection setup was equipped with a versatile aerosol concentration enrichment system (VACES) connected to an aerosol-into-liquid-sampler (AILS), whereas two virtual impactors (VIs) in tandem with a modified BioSampler were used to collect coarse PM. These particle collection setups were in tandem with a Sievers M9 TOC analyzer to read TOC and WSOC concentrations in aqueous samples hourly. The average hourly TOC concentration measured by our developed monitors in fine and coarse PM were 5.17 ± 2.41 and 0.92 ± 0.29 μg/m³, respectively. In addition, our TOC readings showed good agreement and were comparable with those quantified using Sunset Lab EC/OC analyzer operating in parallel as a reference. Furthermore, we conducted field tests to produce diurnal profiles of fine PM-bound WSOC, which can show the effects of ambient temperature on maximum values in the nighttime chemistry of the winter, as well as on increased photochemical activities in afternoon peaks during the summer. According to our experimental campaign, WSOC mean values during the study period (3.07 μg/m³ for the winter and 2.7 μg/m³ for the summer) were in a comparable range with those of earlier studies in Los Angeles. Overall, our results corroborate the performance of our developed monitors in near real-time measurements of TOC and WSOC, which can be employed for future source apportionment studies in Los Angeles and other areas, aiding in understanding the health impacts of different pollution sources.

Wintertime characteristics of water-soluble organic carbon in PM2.5 during haze and non-haze days in Jinan in the North China Plain

Water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) makes up a substantial proportion of organic carbon (OC) in fine particles that can disrupt aerosol hygroscopicity, influence global climate change, and harm human health. In the winter of 2014, carbonaceous species and water-soluble inorganic ions (WSII) were analyzed in PM2.5 samples collected from Jinan in the North China Plain. According to the results, the primary components of PM2.5 include SO42−, NO3−, NH4+ (SNA) and organic carbonaceous aerosol. Except for Ca2+, the average concentration of each chemical component was higher on hazy days than on clear days. Secondary aerosol generation probably played a vital role in haze production, as the relative abundance of secondary inorganic ions and secondary organic carbon was higher on haze days compared to non-haze days. The average WSOC concentration during the sampling period was 10.89 ± 4.66 μg m−3, accounting for 0.47 ± 0.14 of OC. The level of WSOC increased from 9.60 ± 3.32 μg m−3 on days without haze to 16.94 ± 5.43 μg m−3 on haze days. Analyses of linear regression and quantitative calculations demonstrated that burning of biomass and the generation of secondary aerosols were essential contributors to WSOC. WSOC increased with relative humidity/aqueous water content, suggesting that secondary WSOC (WSOCsec) may originate from reactions in the aqueous phase, particularly on haze days. The absorption Ångstrom exponents (AAE) were 6.55 ± 1.79 on non-haze days and 6.59 ± 0.90 on haze days. The average mass absorption efficiency (MAE) at 365 nm on haze days (1.07 ± 0.21 m2 g−1) was higher than on non-haze days (0.88 ± 0.33 m2 g−1), indicating the slightly stronger WSOC's light absorption ability during haze times. Four quantitative sources of WSOC were identified using positive matrix factorization modeling: (i) a mixed primary source (21.78%), (ii) biomass burning (22.14%), (iii) a process comparable to NO3− formation (33.17%) and (iv) a process similar to SO42− formation (22.91%). Comparatively, secondary sources (factors 3 and 4) contributed more to WSOC (56.08%) than primary sources (43.92%, factors 1 and 2). Secondary formation contributed more to WSOC during haze conditions.

Soil organic carbon dynamics shift by incorporating wheat straw in paddy soil in China.

The objective of this study was to explore the effects of unfertilized control (CK), mineral NPK fertilizer (NPK), NPK plus medium-rate wheat straw (MSNPK), and NPK plus high-rate wheat straw (HSNPK) on soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions and C-cycle enzymes at distinct depths (0-5, 5-10, 10-20, 20-30, and 30-50cm) in paddy soil. The SOC content at 0-50cm depth ranged from 8.50 to 21.15g kg-1 , following the trend HSNPK>MSNPK>NPK>CK. Correspondingly, the content of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), particulate organic carbon (POC), and easily oxidizable carbon (EOC) ranged from 0.08 to 0.27g kg-1 , 0.11 to 0.53g kg-1 , 1.48 to 8.29g kg-1 , and 3.25 to 7.33g kg-1 , respectively, and HSNPK exhibited the highest values for these parameters among all treatments and soil depths, with significant differences observed compared to NPK and CK (p<0.05). The cellulase activity of HSNPK was significantly (p<0.05) higher by 6.12%-13.30% compared to the CK at 0-30cm depth; while the activity of invertase and β-glucosidase of HSNPK were significantly (p<0.05) higher by 34.09%-433.43% and 26.61%-130.50%, respectively, compared to the CK at 0-50cm depth. Enzyme activities were significantly (p<0.05) correlated with SOC fractions and the dominant factors driving changes in enzyme activities were WSOC, POC, and EOC. HSNPK was associated with the highest SOC fractions and enzyme activities, indicating that it was the most favorable management practice for promoting soil quality in rice paddy fields.

Mist cannon trucks can exacerbate the formation of water-soluble organic aerosol and PM2.5 pollution in the road environment

Abstract. Mist cannon trucks have been widely applied in megacities in China to reduce the road dust, since they are considered to be more water saving and efficient than the traditional sprinkling trucks. However, their effect on the formation of water-soluble organic compounds and the pollution control of fine particles (PM2.5) remains unknown. We characterized the variations of chemical compositions in PM2.5 collected on the road sides during the simulated operations of mist cannon truck and traditional sprinkling truck via Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and ion chromatography. The mass concentrations of water-soluble organic carbon in PM2.5 showed a significant increase (62 %–70 %) after air spraying. Furthermore, we found that water-soluble organic compounds, particularly organic nitrates, increased significantly via the interactions of reactive gas-phase organics, atmospheric oxidants and aerosol liquid water after air spraying, although the air spraying had a better effect on suppressing road dust than the ground aspersion. Moreover, the formation of PM2.5 on the road segment where the mist cannon truck passed by was promoted, with an increase of up to 13 % in mass concentration after 25–35 min, on average. Thus, the application of mist cannon trucks potentially worsens the road atmospheric environment through the increase in PM2.5 levels and the production of a large number of water-soluble organic compounds in PM2.5. The overall results provide not only valuable insights to the formation processes of water-soluble organic compounds associated with aerosol liquid water in the road environment but also management strategies to regulate the operation of mist cannon trucks in China.

Responses of Soil CO2 Emission and Tree Productivity to Nitrogen and Phosphorus Additions in a Nitrogen-Rich Subtropical Chinese Fir Plantation

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) nutrients have been regularly applied to improve productivity in intensively managed and short-rotation forest plantations in subtropical China. Under the constraint of the national policy of “carbon neutrality”, it is necessary to determine the rational fertilization options by considering both forest productivity and soil CO2 emissions. Past worldwide studies have shown varied responses of forest soil heterotrophic respiration and CO2 emissions to N and P additions. This study designed six treatments with N additions (high level: 15 g N/m2, HN), P (low: 5 g P/m2, LP; high: 15 g P/m2, HP), and their interactions (HNLP and HNHP) to explore the effects of N and P additions on soil CO2 emissions in a P-limited and N-rich Chinese fir plantation (Cunninghamia lanceolata), and we identified the underlying controls using the structural equation model (SEM). The results indicated that LP, HNLP, and HNHP treatments significantly increased soil CO2 emissions in the first four months after treatment and the effects leveled since then. The balance between N and P inputs affected the responses of soil CO2 emissions to P additions. A low P addition significantly increased tree productivity, but the promoting effect gradually declined and was no longer significant after 3 years. Other treatments did not significantly affect tree productivity. The SEM analysis revealed that the promoting effects of P additions on CO2 emission were mainly due to their effects on increasing soil water-soluble organic carbon content and reducing microbial biomass nitrogen content. Considering both soil respiration and tree productivity, this study suggested that LP treatment can effectively balance the N and P nutrients and, in the meantime, maintain relatively low greenhouse gas emissions; thus a low P application level is suggested for N-rich Chinese fir plantations.

Sources of water-soluble organic carbon in fine particles at a southern European urban background site

In this study, the temporal evolution and sources of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in submicron particles at an urban background site in Elche (Spain) were investigated. Measurements of PM1 (N = 200) were carried out over one year (2021). Samples were analysed for organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), WSOC, levoglucosan, elements and major ions. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis was performed in order to identify the sources of WSOC on an annual and a monthly basis. During the study period, traffic restrictions due to COVID-19 led to lower concentrations of PM1 and carbonaceous compounds than expected. The WSOC annual average mass concentration was 0.95 μg⋅m−3, with maximum values during the colder months. The apportionment results indicate that the biomass burning (BB) source contributed 30.63% to WSOC levels, road traffic (RT) accounted for 23.90% of the WSOC, while the contribution of a source related to secondary organic aerosol formation (ammonium sulfate-AS) was 33.80%. Minor sources of WSOC were: soil dust (SD) and secondary nitrate (SN), which contributed 7.44% and 4.22%, respectively, to WSOC concentrations. The WSOC/OC ratio did not exhibit significant variations during the study period, since source contributions were similar for WSOC and OC. The highest values of this ratio were recorded in summer, due to the higher contribution from the AS source to WSOC concentrations.

Response mechanism of interaction between Rhododendron hainanense and microorganisms to heat stress

Heat stress is a major limitation to Rhododendron cultivation in tropical and subtropical regions. Microbial community plays an important role in plant resistance to heat stress, however the microbial mechanism is poorly understood. We conducted a pot culture experiment on Rhododendron hainanense to reveal the mechanism of root microorganisms and soil microorganisms in response to heat stress, using an artificial climate simulation. The experimental control (CK) was set as day (25 ℃, 14 h) /night (20 ℃, 10 h), treatments were medium temperature stress (MTS, 35/30 ℃), and severe temperature stress (STS, 40/35 ℃). The result showed that compared with CK, MTS treatment considerably increased malondialdehyde content, and STS treatment significantly increased proline, and both heat stress treatments significantly decreased chlorophyll content. In comparison to CK, MTS considerably reduced soil nitrate nitrogen, soil microbial biomass carbon, and soil water-soluble organic carbon content. STS dramatically increased soil available nitrogen, soil water-soluble organic carbon, and soil microbial biomass carbon. Heat stress also significantly affected soil microbial community and root endophytic microbial community. Soil microbial and root bacterial community significantly correlated with soil nitrate nitrogen content, and root endophytic fungi significantly correlated with proline and soilwater-soluble organic carbon content. Therefore, soil microorganisms impacted soil nitrogen availability under heat stress, root endophytic bacteria impacted the ability of R. hainanense to absorb nitrogen, and root endophytic fungi controlled the physiological traits of R. hainanense by modifying Pro content to increase the resistance of R. hainanense to heat stress.

Concentrations, sources, fluxes, and absorption properties of carbonaceous matter in a central Tibetan Plateau river basin

Carbonaceous matter (CM) (such as water-insoluble organic carbon (WIOC), black carbon (BC), and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC)) has a significant impact on the carbon cycle and radiative forcing (RF) of glacier. Precipitation samples and glacier's snow/ice samples (snowpit, surface snow, and granular ice) (Xiao dongkemadi Glacier) were collected at the Dongkemadi River Basin (DRB) in the central Tibetan Plateau (TP) between May and October 2016 to investigate the characteristics and roles of CM in the TP River Basin. WIOC, BC, and WSOC concentrations in precipitation were relatively higher than that in snowpit, but lower than that in surface snow/ice, with the wet deposition fluxes of 0.10 ± 0.002, 0.04 ± 0.001, and 0.12 ± 0.002 g C m−2 yr−1 at DRB, respectively. The positive matrix factorization model identified four major sources (biomass burning source, secondary precursors, secondary aerosol, and dust source) of CM in precipitation at DRB. Two source areas (South Asia and the interior of TP) contributing to the pollution at DRB were identified using a potential source contribution function model, a concentration-weighted trajectory method, and the back-trajectory model. Moreover, the light-absorption by WSOC in the ultraviolet region was 23.0%, 12.1%, and 3.4% relative to the estimated total light-absorption in precipitation, snowpit, and surface snow/ice, respectively. Optical indices analysis revealed that WSOC in snowpit samples presented higher molecular weight, while presented higher aromatic and higher molecule sizes in surface snow/ice and precipitation samples, respectively. RF by WSOC relative to that of BC was estimated to be 17.6 ± 17.6% for precipitation, 10.9 ± 5.8% for snowpit, and 10.7 ± 11.6% for surface snow/ice, respectively, during the melt season in the central TP River Basin. These results help us understand how CM affects glaciers, and they can be utilized to create policies and recommendations that efficiently reduce emissions.

Secondary organic carbon in different atmospheric environments of a continental region and seasons

Secondary organic carbon (SOC) was derived using elemental carbon (EC) tracer method for primary organic carbon (OC) in daily aerosol samples collected in the regional background environment, suburban area, and central part of Budapest in each season. The estimation approaches of the OC/EC ratio for the major emission sources required for the tracer method were discussed, and the high EC edge approach was adopted separately for each location and season. The annual mean SOC concentrations in the environments listed were 1.16, 1.51 and 1.42 μg m−3, respectively. They were interpreted together with the PM2.5 mass, OC, EC, water-soluble OC (WSOC), levoglucosan (LVG) and meteorological variables. The annual mean contributions of SOC to OC were 45% at all sampling sites. However, they showed substantial seasonal variation at each location. The shares were the smallest (<≈30%) in winter, whereas they prevailed in summer (in the regional background, this even reached 66%). The secondary organic aerosol (obtained by multiplying the SOC concentrations by the organic mass-to-OC correction factor) made up roughly 25% of the PM2.5 mass except for winter, when it was 10%. Obvious associations of the SOC on the one side and PM2.5 mass, OC and WSOC on the other side were identified as joint relationships for all seasons. The SOC correlated with LVG only in winter when the relative intensity of biomass burning is the highest, and with O3 only in spring and summer, when the role of photochemistry is considerable. Elevations in PM2.5 mass, OC and WSOC concentrations on a daily scale were related to the enhancement of SOC concentration by factors of 0.14, 0.4 and 0.6, respectively, while higher LVG levels in winter enlarged the SOC 3-times. There was a relationship between the SOC and OC from fossil fuel combustion over all seasons, whereas the dependency between the SOC and OC from biomass burning could be established only in winter, and between the SOC and OC from biogenic sources apart from winter. The results and conclusions have importance for the health consequences of SOC in cities and rural areas over the whole Carpathian Basin.

Fluorescence fingerprinting characteristics of water-soluble organic carbon from size-resolved particles during pollution event

A typical haze pollution process in northern China has necessitated this study which focuses on the fluorescence characteristics of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in size-resolved particles. High concentrations of WSOC were found in both fine (38 μg/m³) and coarse particles (36 μg/m³) during the pollution period, which may be related to the secondary formation of organic aerosols and stable meteorological conditions. Five fluorescent components in WSOC were extracted by parallel factor analysis. Our results showed that the fluorophores in fine and coarse particles were mainly humic-like substances (humic-like, terrestrial humic-like, and high oxidation humic-like substances) and protein-like substances (protein-like and tyrosine-like substances), respectively. Moreover, the aging degree analysis, pollution source tracing, and concentration prediction of WSOC were carried out by fluorescence index. An innovative technique called self-organizing map was proposed for an in-depth investigation of the contamination mechanism of the atmospheric organic aerosol. Furthermore, the difference in the fluorescence characteristics of WSOC in fine particles was higher than that in coarse particles. The atmospheric pollution process increased the degree of difference in fluorescence characteristics. Additionally, an effective method for predicting the size of atmospheric particles was established by combining excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy with classification and regression tree analysis.

Effects of Close-to-Nature Transformation on Soil Enzyme Activities and Organic Carbon Fractions in Cuninghamia lanceolata and Pinus massoniana Plantations

Soil enzymes are involved in the process of mineralization of soil organic matters. The close-to-nature transformation (CNT) of plantations changes the soil enzyme activities by changing the composition of stand vegetation, which in turn affects the change process of soil organic carbon. We therefore selected two typical coniferous plantations in southwest China, Pinus massoniana and Cunninghamia lanceolate, to explore the effects of CNT on soil enzyme activities and soil organic carbon, and the relationship between them is explored through comparative study. Compared with control stands (CCK and PCK), CNT enhanced soil organic carbon; the content of water-soluble organic carbon in the 0–10 cm soil layer of the transformed C. lanceolata plantations (CCN) is 81.29% higher than those in the control stands (p &lt; 0.05); the contents of particulate organic carbon and water-soluble organic carbon in the 10–30 cm soil layer are 95.42% and 48.68% higher than those in the control stands (p &lt; 0.05), respectively; after the CNT, the protease, urease, and acid phosphatase in C. lanceolata plantations were higher than control stands, while protease and catalase in P. massoniana plantations were higher than control stands. Correlation analysis showed that catalase and protease were more closely related to organic carbon components than other organic enzymes; redundancy analysis (RDA) results show that pH and total nitrogen are key factors that cause changes in carbon fractions after the CNT. In general, CNT enhanced soil organic carbon in coniferous plantations, which was more conducive to soil organic carbon accumulation but had a negative effect on soil organic carbon stability to a certain extent. Therefore, the effect of tree species configuration on soil carbon stability components should be considered in the forest management practice.

Characteristics of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in PM2.5 in inland and coastal cities, China

Water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) can have direct and indirect impacts on global climate change by absorbing sunlight and altering the hygroscopic properties of aerosols. In this study, PM2.5 samples were collected simultaneously in Jinan (inland city) and Weihai (coastal city) in spring 2018 to examine the optical properties and sources of WSOC. The WSOC concentration in Jinan (9.20 ± 3.04 μg m−3) was significantly higher than that in Weihai (2.95 ± 1.54 μg m−3). The coefficient of divergence (COD) (0.41) showed that the chemical compositions of PM2.5 in Jinan and Weihai had a moderate level of discrepancy. Based on linear regression analysis, biomass burning and secondary formation by liquid phase reactions had important influence on WSOC in Jinan and Weihai, and dust source also made a non-negligible contribution to WSOC in Jinan. Short/regional transport air masses derived from the southern region of the sampling sites were dominant and carried out the most abundant WSOC. The main potential source regions for Jinan covered a larger area than that in Weihai. The absorption Ångstrom exponent (AAE) in Jinan (4.4) was higher than that in Weihai (3.86) but was lower than previous studies. The strong correlation coefficients between light absorption at 365 nm (Abs365) and WSOC indicated water-soluble BrC and WSOC might have similar emission sources. The average mass absorption efficiency at 365 nm (MAE365) in Jinan was 0.65 m2 g−1, which was much lower than that in Weihai (1.18 m2 g−1).

Spatial distribution and risk assessment of metal(loid)s in marine sediments in the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea

Seventy-four surface sediment samples were collected from the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea to determine the content of metal(loid)s (As, Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, Zn and Cr). Metal(loid)s content in these sediments varied from 2.36–41.90 mg/kg for As, 8.63–82.28 mg/kg for Cu, 0.14–0.71 mg/kg for Cd, 11.86–100.60 mg/kg for Ni, 8.30–27.58 mg/kg for Pb, 39.93–391.43 mg/kg for Zn, and 40.96–106.49 mg/kg for Cr. The pH and water-soluble organic carbon content had considerable impacts on the content of metal(loid)s in sediment, but the texture of sediment has limited influence on metal(loid)s content in sediment. In addition, the hotspots of most of these metal(loid)s appeared in the Beaufort Sea region. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) indicated that Cd was the metal with the highest contamination in these sediments, with 55.41% of the sample sites posing moderate pollution. The ecological risk for As, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Cr indicates low ecological risk (100%), while Cd posed moderate risk (35.14%), considerable risk (54.05%) and high risk (10.81%) and attributed more than 76.45% of the total potential ecological risk of these metal(loid)s.

Quantifying the relative contributions of aqueous phase and photochemical processes to water-soluble organic carbon formation in winter in a megacity of South China

To identify potential formation mechanisms of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) and quantify their contributions to WSOC in urban Guangzhou of south China, a comprehensive campaign was carried out in winter of 2019–2020. During the campaign, WSOC, total carbon (TC), black carbon (BC), water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) and fourteen elements in PM2.5 were collected using inline instruments. Bulk PM2.5 and size-segregated particle samples were also synchronously collected using offline instruments for analyzing the dominant chemical components including WSOC, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and WSIIs. In addition, gaseous pollutants (e.g., NH3, SO2, HNO3, NO2, O3) and meteorological parameters were also measured during the same period. PM2.5 pollution episodes during the campaign period were mainly driven by increased nitrate concentrations. The mass concentration of WSOC increased from 3.9 ± 1.1 μg m−3 on non-episode days to 6.8 ± 0.6 μg m−3 on episode days, although the mass ratio of WSOC to OC in PM2.5 changed little (<4%). Photochemical processes dominated WSOC formation in the afternoon and aqueous phase chemical processes played the dominant role in the night, from which newly formed WSOC distributed in the condensation mode and the droplet mode, respectively. Source apportionment analysis using positive matrix factorization (PMF) model suggested that on average 35% and 65% of WSOC mass in PM2.5 were related with the photochemical processes and aqueous phase chemical processes, respectively. Aqueous phase chemical processes were highly affected by nitrate pollution, which was closely related with O3 pollution.

An overestimation of light absorption of brown carbon in ambient particles caused by using filters with large pore size

As an important component of carbonaceous particles, organic carbon (OC) plays a significant role in radiative forcing in the atmosphere. Recently, the warming effect of light-absorbing OC has been emphasized. Water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) is commonly used as a surrogate to investigate the light absorption of OC. Thus far, filters with 0.45 μm (PS1) and 0.20 μm pore sizes (PS2) are both used to investigate the light absorption of WSOC, which may cause large divergent results. In this study, we found that the light absorption ability of WSOC treated with PS1 was higher than that of PS2 due to the extinction of suspended particles (e.g., black carbon) with particle size between 0.20 μm and 0.45 μm, although the concentrations of WSOC treated with PS1 and PS2 were very close. This phenomenon was more remarkable at visible wavelengths, resulting in an overestimation of the warming effect of WSOC by 9%–22% for aerosol samples treated by PS1, with the highest values occurring in samples heavily influenced by fossil fuel burning emissions. An overestimation of WSOC light absorption treated by PS1 occurred in the investigated ambient aerosol samples from three sites, so it may be a general phenomenon that also exists in other regions of the world. Therefore, to achieve the actual solar radiative forcing of OC in the atmosphere, it is recommended to use PS2 in the future, and reported data of WSOC treated by PS1 should be re-evaluated.
