Rainwater harvesting technologies in arid plains of Argentina: small local strategies vs. large centralized projects

Access to water has been and remains one of humanity’s greatest challenges. Especially in arid plains exposed to significant climatic fluctuations and future global change trends. In the past and present, local communities of the arid plains of central-western Argentina (i.e., Guanacache Lagoons, Cuyo region) have developed multiple strategies to manage water supply problems. The aims of this study are: i) to characterize the different water harvesting technologies (pre-Hispanic and modern) used, and ii) to compare the small local strategies of water harvesting (bottom-up solutions) with the large centralized projects (top-down solutions). On the one hand, we show the transformations of these technologies over time, and the challenges faced by inhabitants in the context of climate change trends. On the other hand, we analyze the role of the state through hydraulic policies and projects implemented by the provincial states over the last two centuries and how this impacted the study area. This review is based on a historical and archaeological bibliography, and recent publications about the region, including articles based on our ethnographic fieldwork. Our results demonstrate the valuable experience accumulated by local populations in water harvesting methods, particularly in areas where groundwater is deep and saline, and shows the adaptability of these technologies in contexts of increasing scarcity. We considered that local indigenous knowledge can largely contribute to the sustainable management of water resources. This study might be useful for decision-makers and water managers in drylands around the world to find and equitable approach that combines technical advances with local knowledge.

Protecting ancient water harvesting technologies in India: strategies for climate adaptation and sustainable development with global lessons

IntroductionAncient water harvesting systems, such as those from the Indus Valley Civilization (~3500 BCE), have been vital for irrigation and climate resilience, especially in arid regions. One such prominent system in South Asia, called tank irrigation, initially thrived through community management but declined post-independence due to colonial policies and neglect in Sri Lanka and India. This study evaluates current policy frameworks and rehabilitation programs to enhance the resilience of these systems in India, develop strategies for their protection and adaptation to climate change, and integrate global lessons for sustainable development.MethodsA systematic meta-analysis of grey literature was conducted to aggregate data on policy constraints. Policy analysis involved detailed investigations of relevant documents, regulations, and comparative analyses of frameworks at regional and national levels. Pilot projects on tank rehabilitation were assessed through reported case studies and field surveys to gauge impact. Thematic analysis was used to explore the global potential of these systems in climate resilience and overall environmental sustainability.ResultsThe analysis showed that pilot projects for tank rehabilitation had limited success in achieving sustainability under current climate conditions. Tank irrigation systems are crucial for adapting to extreme weather, including floods, droughts, and heat waves, replenishing groundwater, reducing soil erosion, and ensuring reliable water supplies. Traditional water harvesting technologies support 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including clean water access, hunger reduction, gender equality, and climate action. Integrating AI and machine learning in water management benefits disaster response, while eco-tourism aids system maintenance and cultural awareness.DiscussionThe study underscores the need for policy reforms to enhance tank rehabilitation and institutional arrangements. It calls for increased beneficiary participation and constitutional recognition of current practices. Strategic, national-scale assessments and resilience targets are recommended to improve the effectiveness of such water harvesting systems in mitigating natural hazards and enhancing environmental services.

Socio-economic and Bio-physical Characterization of Wadego Watershed, Oda-Bultum Woreda, West Hararghe zone, Ethiopia

Baseline characterization is important component of watershed development of rural development and natural resource management strategies in many countries. Hence, the study was designed to; assess and document major biophysical and socio-economic constraints and potentials of Wadego watershed. Firstly, Wadego watershed boundary was delineated and its map was developed based on the preliminary outlet identified with the help of GPS reading. The households for interview were selected randomly from the small householders in the watershed based on proportional to population size. Accordingly, data was collected from 120 sample respondents using various instruments such as: key informant interview using semi-structured checklist, focused group discussion, expert interview, unstructured questionnaire and field observation on bio-physical resources and different concerns of watershed management. Collected data was summarized using descriptive statistics. The result indicated, out of the total 120 sample respondents socio-economic status were; 87.5% of them were male while the rest 12.5% were female, 93% were married, 51% were un educated. The major crops grown in the watershed were Maize, Sorghum, Khat, Teff and others while, Barley and Field Pea were the least grown ones. The result of the survey has indicated 37% uses improved variety, while 64% uses local variety. According to respondents, the slop class of the watershed was 56, 29, and 15% flat, medium and steeply slops respectively. Moreover, soil fertility class was 25%, 54% and 21% low, medium and high respectively in the watershed. Generally, the survey result have characterized and documented bio-physical and socio-economic status as: average land owned half hectare, densely populated, different slope class in the watershed, land shortage, feed problems, presence of soil fertility and erosion problems, climatic problems etc. in the watershed. Accordingly, researchable issues on different prioritized problems concerning to; soil fertility management, soil and water conservation, Agroforestry practice, forage development and forestry practices in the watershed have given prioritization and therefore, adapted and generated technologies nearby research center i.e. Mechara Agricultural Research Center and any concerned research institutions and also development work oriented NGO’S has to intervened the watershed by research development work. Accordingly, intervention areas forwarded are: Creating awareness on climate variability and change and SWC techniques, introducing different biophysical soil and water harvesting technologies, demonstration and awareness creation, Participatory demonstration on different Agroforestry and plantation forestry practices, introducing multipurpose plant species like Bamboo variety in the watershed.

A solar-driven hygroscopic aerogel using electrical impedance tomography for exploiting differentiated photothermal interfaces

Photothermal materials and structures are essential for the actual performance of interfacial solar-steam generation systems in atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technologies. However, the absence of theoretical insights into water desorption, diffusion, and heat transfer at the photothermal interface can impede the development of efficient solar interfacial AWH technologies. To address this gap, we introduce an in-situ imaging approach utilizing the electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system to dynamically visualize the water desorption process within aerogels in real time. The visualization outcomes highlight that the effectiveness of moisture desorption in aerogels is influenced by critical factors, including heat concentration, the localization of heating and cooling, and minimal diffusion resistance. Furthermore, the microstructure and temperature disparities on different sides drive internal water movement and evaporation. The proposed design of the generalized EIT visualization detection system aims to reveal the desorption kinetics of highly efficient solar-driven AWH materials, paving the way for a new frontier in studying the interfacial solar-steam generation process.

Participatory Demonstration and Evaluation of In-situ Rain Water Harvesting Technology with Sorghum Production in West Hararghe Zone

The study was conducted in Daro Lebu and Hawi Gudina districts of West Hararghe zone with objective of evaluating the performance of In-situ water harvesting technologies with sorghum production under farmers’ condition. Haroresa kile and Ibsa kebeles were selected based on water deficit and potential sorghum production. 4 farmers from Haroresa kile and 3 farmers from Ibsa were participated on the experiment. 10m by 10m area was used and planted side by side on structure verses without structure. The Structure was constructed with 30cm depth, 30cm width and tied ridge at 3m interval and seed was placed on center at 15cm. Melkam Sorghum variety was planted using 75cm *25cm plant spacing. Yield, farmers’ preference and production cost were collected and analyzed by descriptive statistics, simple ranking method and cost benefit analysis respectively. Training and mini-field day were organized to promote In-situ water harvesting on Sorghum production. Farmers selected Structure Technology by stay green, stay moist, drought tolerance, disease tolerance and head size. 47Qtha<sup>-1</sup> and 45.2Qtha<sup>-1</sup>grain yield were obtained from Sorghum planted with structure and without structure respectively, with 4% yield advantage over without structure. Production of Sorghum variety with structure and without structure generated an income of 169, 250 birr ha<sup>-1</sup> and 167, 050 birr ha-<sup>1</sup>, respectively. Based on farmers’ preferences and profitability of the technology, planting sorghum with tied ridge/structure/ was recommended for water deficit areas of west Hararghe zone and similar agro-ecologies to increase production and productivity of sorghum.

Green Synthesis of Polyurethane Sponge-Grafted Calcium Alginate with Carbon Ink Aerogel with High Water Vapor Harvesting Capacity for Solar-Driven All-Weather Atmospheric Water Harvesting.

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology is a new strategy for alleviating freshwater scarcity. Adsorbent materials with high hygroscopicity and high photothermal conversion efficiency are the key to AWH technology. Hence, in this study, a simple and large-scale preparation for a hygroscopic compound of polyurethane (PU) sponge-grafted calcium alginate (CA) with carbon ink (SCAC) was developed. The PU sponge in the SCAC aerogel acts as a substrate, CA as a moisture adsorber, and carbon ink as a light adsorber. The SCAC aerogel exhibits excellent water absorption of 0.555-1.40 g·g-1 within a wide range of relative humidity (40-80%) at 25 °C. The SCAC aerogel could release adsorbed water driven by solar energy, and more than 92.17% of the adsorbed water could be rapidly released over a wide solar intensity range of 1.0-2.0 sun. In an outdoor experiment, 57.517 g of SCAC was able to collect 32.8 g of clean water in 6 h, and the water quality meets the drinking water standards set by the World Health Organization. This study suggests a new approach to design promising AWH materials and infers the potential practical application of SCAC aerogel-based adsorbents.

3D Bionic Water Harvesting System for Efficient Fog Capturing and Transporting

AbstractFog harvest has emerged as a direct and efficient water harvesting technology to relieve the intense pressure of freshwater scarcity worldwide. With the vagaries of climate and increasing amount of energy consumption, high‐efficiency fog harvest devices focus on the fast water droplet capture and transportation are highly desired. In this study, a novel harp structure is developed using cross‐twisted copper filaments arranged in a spatial triangular pattern to enhance water droplet capture and transportation. Inspired by the natural differences in Laplace pressure observed in cactus and spider silks, this design accelerates the movement of water bridges. Besides, drawing on the fruit waxes on the surface of hogweed and blueberries, a paraffin wax coating is applied on the copper sheet frame to create a solid slip frame, improving the synergy between filament capture and frame transportation. The monolithic fog collector (MFC) thus achieves a significant increase in fog harvest efficiency and demonstrates excellent durability. Integration of the MFCs into a 3D high‐efficiency fog harvest system results in a harvest rate of 0.5027 g cm−2 min−1, showing promise for practical applications due to its durability, simplicity, and environmental friendliness.

Scaled solar-driven atmospheric water harvester with low-cost composite sorbent

The rapidly developing atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology can convert inexhaustible water vapor from the air into liquid water, which has become a highly potential technological solution for humanity to cope with water crises. Unlike the energy-intensive method of cooling air below the dew point to achieve water production, the sorption-based AWH (SAWH) system with adsorbents can achieve efficient water production above the dew point temperature in arid areas using low-grade energy represented by solar energy. However, current research of SAWH focuses mainly on small-scale devices, and practical verification with large-scale experimental equipment is still lacking. In addition, most of these verifications used auxiliary equipment to support the demonstration, and the expensive chosen adsorbent to pursue full-day adsorption capacity further limited the practical application of this technology. Based on this, from developing composite adsorbents to scalable solar-driven devices, this work proposes a complete technical solution to meet practical needs in arid regions. The developed low-cost composite adsorbent has an adsorption capacity of 0.52 g g−1 at 30 °C@60 % of relative humidity (RH), and its adsorption capacity can be significantly improved with the increase of RH (e.g., 0.97 g g−1 at 30 °C@80%RH), which is very beneficial for the utilization of high-humidity adsorption environments at night. The developed adsorbent, combined with a scaled device optimized by thermal design, achieved a high-level water production capacity of 355 g in a day and 0.74 L m−2 in practical field experiments.

Low-humidity sensor and biomimetic power supply based on mesoporous silica/polymerizable deep eutectic solvent ionogels

Although technologies related to humidity detection and utilization, such as humidity sensors, atmospheric water harvesting, energy collection, and moisture-enabled electrical generation technologies, have been widely reported, there is still an urgent need for effective monitoring and utilization of humidity in low-humidity places. An ideal low-humidity sensor requires a high response, fast response time and low humidity hysteresis. Soft ion power supplies inspired by electric eels convert the chemical potential energy of ion gradients into electrical energy by utilizing humidity, but their production is challenging. This paper reports a new strategy for developing functionalized ionogels based on mesoporous silica and a polymerizable deep eutectic solvent (SiO2@PDES). Due to their strong hydrophilicity, high ionic conductivity, excellent adhesion, flexibility and mechanical strength, SiO2@PDES ionogels can not only detect low humidity but also generate electric power through a reasonably designed device structure. In the 5–30% RH range, the response of the SiO2@PDES humidity sensor reaches 1600%, with negligible humidity hysteresis (0.8% RH). As a biomimetic soft ion power supply, SiO2@PDES ionogels generate a high open-circuit voltage of ∼600 mV at 33% RH, which expands the environmental adaptability of moisture-enabled electrical generation equipment. In addition, the excellent moisture-enabled electrical generation performance endows portable wearable power supplies with high potential for applications such as charging capacitors and lighting LEDs.

Smart coating materials of buildings for atmospheric water harvesting and response

The promising atmospheric water harvesting technology has been the focus of much attention for the challenge of alleviating global water scarcity. Here, we report a smart coating material for buildings, in short, super hygroscopic material(SHM) modified calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) by using a three-dimensional gel as support, for the first time. The obtained coating material achieves not only ultra-high humidity capture capacities (over 463 mg/g of its weight under room temperature with a relative humidity of 98%) but also rapid and obvious color variations as a response to humidity capture that is visible to the naked eye. More importantly, the above-mentioned phenomenon can be repeated over a wide temperature (4–40 °C) and humidity (43–98 %) range, suggesting that the present coating material has a promising potential to be applied in the real-world humidity capture and response of buildings.

A binary salt composite adsorbent material for solar-driven sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting

Solar-driven sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SSAWH) technology stands as a promising avenue for sourcing freshwater in arid and remote regions. For real-world large-scale applications, the effective water absorption capacity, broad humidity absorption range, and rapid desorption properties of adsorbent materials have been the main goals of the research area. In this context, we have developed a binary salt composite adsorbent material (PAMg-Li) for solar-driven water harvesting by integrating binary hygroscopic salts MgSO4 particles and LiCl particles, activated carbon fiber (ACF), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The inherent porous structure and interconnected channels at micro and nano scales of PAMg-Li facilitate water absorption, and obtained satisfactory water absorption rate even at 30% relative humidity (RH). It has been shown to be able to achieve a high water storage capacity and realize water desorption under natural light. A home-made device based on PAMg-Li obtained a water evaporation rate of 0.084 kg/(m2·h) under solar radiation intensities ranging from 200 to 850 W/m2. The PAMg-Li material developed in this work can be a candidate for a more practical and effective choice for SSAWH.

A Semi-Interpenetrating Network Sorbent of Superior Efficiency for Atmospheric Water Harvesting and Solar-Regenerated Release.

Water is readily available nearly anywhere as vapor. Thus, atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technologies are seen as a promising solution to support sustainable water production. This work reports a novel semi-interpenetrating network, which integrates poly(pyrrole) doped with a hygroscopic salt and 2D graphene-based nanosheets optimally assembled within an alginate matrix, capable of harvesting water from the atmosphere with a record intake of up to 7.15 gw/gs. Owing to the incorporated graphene nanosheets, natural sunlight was solely used to enable desorption, achieving an increase of the temperature of the developed network of up to 71 °C within 20 min, resulting in a water yield of 3.36 L/kgS in each cycle with quality well within the World Health Organization standard ranges. Notably, after 30 cycles of sorption and desorption, the composite hydrogel displayed unchanged water uptake and stability. This study demonstrates that atmospheric water vapor as a complementary source of water can be harvested sustainably and effectively at a minimal cost and without external energy input.

Preparation and properties of a metal-organic frameworks polymer material based on Sa-son seed gum capable of simultaneously absorbing liquid water and water vapor

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology has attracted significant attention as an effective strategy to tackle the global shortage of freshwater resources. Work has focused on the use of hydrogel-based composite adsorbents in water harvesting and water conservation. The approaches adopted to make use of hygroscopic inorganic salts which subject to a “salting out” effect. In this study, we report the first use of modified UIO-66-NH2 as a functional steric cross-linker and Sa-son seed gum was used as polymeric substrate to construct super hygroscopic hydrogels by free radical copolymerization. The maximum water uptake on SMAGs (572 cm3·g−1) outperforms pure UIO-66-NH2 (317 cm3·g−1). Simultaneously, our first attempt to use it for anti-evaporation applications in an arid environment (Lanzhou, China) simulating sandy areas. The evaporation rate of the anti-evaporation material treated with 0.20 % super moisture-absorbent gels (SMAGs) decreased by 6.1 % over 64 h period under natural condition in Lanzhou, China. The prepared material can not only absorb liquid water but also water vapor, which can provide a new way for water collection and conservation technology. The design strategy of this material has wide applications ranging from atmospheric water harvesting materials to anti-evaporation technology.

A Study of Hygroscopicity Improvements to Adsorbents in Solar-Powered Air Water Extraction

As a global freshwater shortage is imminent, solar-powered adsorption-based atmospheric water harvesting technology is gradually attracting people’s attention due to its environmental friendliness and many other advantages. Among the many adsorbents used in this technology, MOF-801 has a large adsorption capacity in a wide range of humidity. In the current field, carbon materials are usually added to improve the photothermal properties of MOF-801, but hybrid adsorbents made in this way usually weaken the adsorption performance of MOF-801. If the MOF-801/carbon material adsorbent is used as a base and mixed with hygroscopic salt, which also has good adsorption properties, the hygroscopic properties of MOF-801 can be improved and the drawback of hygroscopic salt, which is prone to be lost after absorbing water, can be ameliorated. In this study, a hybrid adsorbent combining MOF-801 with carbon black (CB) and LiCl was prepared, and the effects of carbon black and LiCl on the performance of the MOF-801 adsorbent were compared. The experiments showed that the adsorption capacity of the hybrid adsorbent obtained a significant enhancement after the addition of LiCl, which increased by 38.2% versus 112.3% compared with MOF-801 and MOF-801/CB.

Climate change projection using statistical downscaling model over southern coastal Iran

Iran is highly vulnerable to climate change, particularly evident in shifting precipitation and temperature patterns, especially in its southern coastal region. With these changing climate conditions, there is an urgent need for practical and adaptive management of water resources and energy supply to address the challenges posed by future climate change. Over the next two to three decades, the effects of climate change, such as precipitation and temperature, are expected to worsen, posing greater risks to water resources, agriculture, and infrastructure stability. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the alterations in mean daily temperature (Tmean) and total daily rainfall (rrr24) utilizing climate change scenarios from both phases 5 and 6 of the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project (CMIP5 and CMIP6, respectively) in the southern coastal regions of Iran (Hormozgan province), specifically north of the Strait of Hormuz. The predictions were generated using the Statistical Downscaling Model (SDSM) and National Centre for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) predictors, incorporating climate change scenarios from CMIP5 with Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5 and CMIP6 with Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) 1, 2, and 5. The analysis was conducted for three distinct time periods: the early 21st century (2021–2045), middle 21st century (2046–2071), and late 21st century (2071–2095). The results indicated that the CMIP5 model outperformed the CMIP6 model in simulating and predicting Tmean and rrr24. In addition, a significant increase in Tmean was observed across all the scenarios and time periods, with the most pronounced trend occurring in the middle and late 21st century future periods. This increase was already evident during the base period of 2021–2045 across all scenarios. Moreover, the fluctuations in precipitation throughout the region and across all scenarios were significant in the three examined future periods. The results indicated that among CMIP5 scenarios, RCP8.5 had highest changes of Tmean (+1.22 °C) in Bandar Lengeh station in 2071–2095 period. The lowest change magnitude of Tmean among CMIP5 scenarios was found in RCP4.5 (−1.94 °C) in Ch station in 2046–2070 period. The results indicated that among CMIP5 scenarios, RCP8.5 had highest changes of rrr24 (+150.2 mm) in Chabahar station in 2071–2095 period. The lowest change magnitude of rrr24 among CMIP5 scenarios was found in RCP8.5 (−25.8 mm) in Bandar Abbas station in 2046–2070 period. In conclusion, the study reveals that the coastal area of Hormozgan province will experience rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns in the future. These changes may lead to challenges such as increased water and energy consumption, heightened risks of droughts or floods, and potential damage to agriculture and infrastructure. These findings offer valuable insights for implementing local mitigation policies and strategies and adapting to emerging climate changes in Hormozgan's coastal areas. For example, utilizing water harvesting technologies, implementing watershed management practices, and adopting new irrigation systems can address challenges like water consumption, agricultural impacts, and infrastructure vulnerability. Future research should accurately assess the effect of these changes in precipitation and temperature on water resources, forest ecosystems, agriculture, and other infrastructures in the study area to implement effective management measures.

Multi‐Dimensional Bionic Micro‐Nanostructure Surface for Controllable Fog Harvesting: from Fabrication to Application

AbstractWith the rapid growth of the population and the development of the economy, the shortage of freshwater resources has become a worldwide problem. Utilizing fog harvesting provides a practical solution to relieve the water shortage problem for residents in arid regions. This review summarizes the typical fog harvesting phenomena in nature in detail, the construction methods, fog harvesting performance, and the action mechanism of different biomimetic micro‐nano structures from one‐dimensional (1D), two‐dimensional (2D), and three‐dimensional (3D) perspectives. The influence of surface micro‐nano structure and wettability on water harvesting performance is analyzed. Finally, the challenges and future development directions of multi‐scale micro‐nano surface controllable water harvesting technology are summarized and prospected, which provides a good idea for the design of bioinspired micro‐nanomaterials and promotes water harvesting from scientific research to practical application.

In Situ MXene Anchored Structure for Highly Durable Solar Steam Generation.

As a promising fresh water harvesting technology, interfacial solar steam generation has attracted growing interest. Efficient solar absorption and long-term operational performance are critical requirements of this technology. However, developing robust evaporators to promote practical applications under extreme conditions is still a grand challenge. Herein, we propose a light-assisted strategy to in situ prepare a Ti3C2Tx MXene anchored structure (MXAS) for enhanced solar evaporation with superior mechanical properties (compressive strength of 78.47 MPa, which can withstand a pressure of 3.92 × 106 times its own weight). Light irradiation enlarges the interlayer spacing of MXene and improves the solar absorption capability. Under one sun, the three-dimensional MXAS evaporator exhibits a steam generation rate of 2.48 kg m-2 h-1and an evaporation efficiency of 89.3%, and it demonstrates long-term durability when testing in seawater. This strategy provides valuable insights into the potential application of a high-performance water evaporation system.

Research Progress on Hygroscopic Agents for Atmospheric Water Harvesting Systems.

Adsorptive atmospheric water harvesting systems (AWHs) represent an innovative approach to collecting freshwater resources from the atmosphere, with a hygroscopic agent at their core. This method has garnered significant attention due to its broad applicability, strong recycling capacity, and sustainability. It is being positioned as a key technology to address global freshwater scarcity. The core agent's hygroscopic properties play a crucial role in determining the performance of the AWHs. This article provides a comprehensive review of the latest advancements in hygroscopic agents, including their adsorption mechanisms and classifications. This study of hygroscopic agents analyzes the performance and characteristics of relevant porous material composite polymer composites and plant composites. It also evaluates the design and preparation of these materials. Aiming at the problems of low moisture adsorption and desorption difficulty of the hygroscopic agent, the factors affecting the water vapor adsorption performance and the method of enhancing the hygroscopic performance of the material are summarized and put forward. For the effect of hygroscopic agents on the volume of water catchment devices, the difference in density before and after hygroscopicity is proposed as part of the evaluation criteria. Moisture absorption per unit volume is added as a performance evaluation criterion to assess the effect of hygroscopic agents on the volume of water collection equipment. The article identifies areas that require further research and development for moisture absorbers, exploring their potential applications in other fields and anticipating the future development direction and opportunities of moisture-absorbing materials. The goal is to promote the early realization of adsorptive atmospheric water harvesting technology for large-scale industrial applications.

Income Inequality and Its Pattern among Farm Households in Southern Rajasthan, India

The study was undertaken to analyse the income inequality and its pattern among farm households in Udaipur and Banswara districts of southern Rajasthan. The study was based on primary data collected from 240 households with the help of pre structured schedule during the year 2020-21. Selection of farmers categorized into two categories i.e., beneficiary farmers and non-beneficiary farmers under assured and unassured irrigation, respectively. Lorenz curve and Gini Concentration ratio were used to analyzed the data. Results revealed that the Gini-concentration ratio for beneficiary farms was observed lower i.e., 0.36 and 0.40 as compared to non-beneficiary farms i.e., 0.46 and 0.48, respectively in Banswara and Udaipur districts. Thus, it can be concluded that income inequality was lower on beneficiary farms compared to non-beneficiary farms in the study area. Authors recommended that government should encourage the farmers to increase agricultural productivity, use of new technology providing by irrigation facilities by water harvesting technology in study area to increase the farm income and lower down the income inequality.

LiCl in situ decorated metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived porous carbon for efficient solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting.

Solar-powered sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology is a promising solution to the freshwater scarcity in arid regions. Existing adsorbent materials still face challenges in aspects such as cycling stability and adsorption kinetics and require further development. Herein, we presented a strategy for the in situ fabrication of high-performance adsorbents, lithium chloride (LiCl)-decorated metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived porous carbon sorbents (PCl), via high-temperature pyrolysis and hydrogen chloride (HCl) vapor treatment. The sorbents display high adsorption capacity across a wide range of humidity water adsorption capacities in a wide humidity range with the maximum adsorption capacity of 7.87 g g-1, and rapid response to the solar-driven process and excellent cyclic stability. The LiCl nanocrystals in PCl can be utilized efficiently and decorated within the porous framework stably, and demonstrate water adsorption at 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% RH, of 1.34, 1.69, 2.56 and 4.23 gH2O·gLiCl-1, respectively, and significantly higher water uptake and release rates than bulk LiCl. This may provide new guides for designing efficient solar-driven AWH.
