Assessing the Water Footprints (WFPs) of Agricultural Products across Arid Regions: Insights and Implications for Sustainable Farming

Water resource management has emerged as a pivotal concern within arid regions in recent times. The water footprint (WFP) index stands out as a principal gauge for facilitating comprehensive watershed management. This study endeavors to compute the WFP of diverse agricultural products encompassing major crops, orchards, cucurbits, and medicinal plants across arid regions. This research focuses on three distinct climate scenarios: the Shazand Plain with a semidry climate, the Khomein Plain characterized by a dry climate, and the Saveh Plain exhibiting a very dry climate. This study also seeks to ascertain the climate most conducive to cultivating crops from a WFP (green, blue, and gray) perspective. To achieve these objectives, this study employed the CropWat family software to determine crop water requirements, as well as considering crop yield and relevant parameters for calculations. The findings of the investigation unveiled that the cultivated areas in the respective climates amounted to 19,479 ha (semidry), 18,166 ha (dry), and 41,682 ha (very dry). These areas were allocated as follows: 88%, 85%, and 55% for crops; 11%, 13%, and 40% for orchards; and 1%, 2%, and 5% for cucurbit crops. Importantly, the very dry climate was predisposed to allocating more land for low-water-demand orchards. Among the major crops, wheat occupied 44%, 39%, and 43% of the total areas in the semidry, dry, and very dry climates, respectively. Analyzing the overall agricultural output in these climates, it was revealed that over 79%, 69%, and 66% of production correlated with crops; 17%, 19%, and 22% with orchards; and 4%, 12%, and 12% with cucurbits, respectively. In terms of water consumption, maize and apples emerged as the highest performers, with varying consumption patterns across different crops. Interestingly, canola exhibited a substantially higher WFP, surpassing wheat and barley by 56.48% and 58.85%, respectively, in dry climates. Cucurbit crops, on the other hand, displayed a lower WFP in dry climates, which could potentially encourage their cultivation. The influence of climate warming on canola’s WFPgray introduced complexity, challenging the conventional correlation between WFP and yields. Medicinal plants consistently demonstrated lower WFP values, underscoring the need for deliberate and considerate cultivation decisions in this regard.

The water footprint of hydrogen production

Hydrogen (H2) is the most promising energy carrier for reducing the carbon emissions of the energy sector, but the impact of its production on water resources remains unclear. Here, we quantify the water footprint (WF) of different H2 production pathways accounting for the WF of the primary energy used in the production process, as well as feedstock and infrastructure water requirements. Results suggest that green H2 obtained from water electrolysis powered by renewable energy has the lowest WF (65 ± 2 m3/TJ for wind and 204 ± 79 m3/TJ for solar) mostly due to the low WF of renewable energy. The WF of blue H2 derived from fossil fuels is significantly higher (369 ± 30 m3/TJ for natural gas and 564 ± 82 m3/TJ for coal) due to high WF of fossil fuels as well as the water required for carbon capture and storage (CCS). H2 produced from nuclear energy and biomass have extremely high WF (741 ± 277 m3/TJ for nuclear and > 50,000 m3/TJ for biomass). Considering global and country-based energy scenarios, where the main H2 colors (green and blue) individually account for 15 % of energy consumption, we find that the use of green H2 could reduce the water demand of the energy sector while blue H2 would generally increase it, except in countries already characterized by high water consumption due to reliance on water-intensive energy sources. At the global level, we find that for every 5 % of H2 energy adoption, the energy sector could have water savings between 1 and 4 % for green H2 and increase water consumption between 1 and 5 % for blue H2. These results highlight the potential and criticalities of H2 within the water-energy nexus.

Environmental impact assessment of direct lithium extraction from brine resources: Global warming potential, land use, water consumption, and charting sustainable scenarios

Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) has emerged as an alternative that bypasses lengthy evaporation processes to produce lithium from brine sources. This study scrutinizes both direct and indirect environmental impacts of DLE, specifically focusing on global warming, land use, and water consumption in Clayton Valley, Nevada. It was compared to traditional brine and hard rock extraction methods. The DLE method is closely tied to energy usage, and this study has explored various scenarios for power sources. The TRACI, ReCiPe, and AWARE methods of life cycle assessment were employed to evaluate the environmental footprint, indirect land use, and water footprint of lithium production from various sources. According to the study, producing one ton of lithium carbonate using the DLE method showed distinct emissions profiles. Specifically, when electricity was sourced from a diesel generator, the Nevada grid, or solar panels, the emissions totaled approximately 22, 17.3, and 7.6 tons of CO2eq, respectively. Switching power sources goes beyond affecting greenhouse gas emissions; it also influences land use impacts and individual water consumption, as evaluated in this study. The direct land use for DLE is as follows: 16, 493, 182, and 659 m²/ton of Lithium Carbonate Equivalent (LCE) for processing plant, processing plant, well field, processing plant, solar panel area, and all regions required with solar panels, respectively. In assessing the water footprint, the study determined varying water deprivation potentials depending on the electricity source utilized: 3.7 m³eq/kg of LCE with a diesel generator, 9.5 m³eq/kg of LCE with the Nevada grid, and 4.2 m³eq/kg of LCE with solar panels.

Water Footprint Assessment of Agricultural Crop Productions in the Dry Farming Region, Shanxi Province, Northern China

Exploring the crop production water footprint and their driving factors is of significant importance for management of agricultural water resources. However, how do we effectively assess the total agricultural water consumption and explore the significance of their driving factors, i.e., population, economy, and agricultural production conditions, using a backpropagation neural network (BPNN)? It is still ambiguous. Water consumption for crops during the growing season is explicitly explored by way of water footprint indicators (green water footprint, WFPg, and blue water footprint, WFPb). This study provides new insights into the factors driving the changes in crop production water footprint in Taiyuan City over the period of 2005–2021. Simulations of crop evapotranspiration using the CROPWAT model were quantified. The results showed that Taiyuan City has a low crop yield level below the average level of China, with the highest crop yield in maize. The crop production water footprint in Taiyuan City showed a non-linearly decreasing trend over time. The average annual crop production water footprint was 187.09 × 103 m3/kg in Taiyuan City, with the blue water footprint and green water footprint accounting for 63.32% and 36.68%, respectively. The crop production water footprint in the west and north of Taiyuan City was significantly higher than those in other areas, accounting for 42.92% of the total crop production water footprint. Oilseed crops contributed most to the total crop production water footprint, accounting for 47.11%. The GDP and total sown area of crops were more important for the changes in WFPb. Agricultural machinery power and agriculture-to-non-agriculture ratio were more important for the changes in WFPg. Agricultural machinery power and GDP were more important for the changes in IWFP. In-depth analysis of the factors driving the changes in crop production water footprint is dramatically important for agricultural decision makers to mitigate water resource pressure in Taiyuan City.

Water footprints and crop water use of 175 individual crops for 1990–2019 simulated with a global crop model

The water footprint of a crop (WF) is a common metric for assessing agricultural water consumption and productivity. To provide an update and methodological enhancement of existing WF datasets, we apply a global process-based crop model to quantify consumptive WFs of 175 individual crops at a 5 arcminute resolution over the 1990–2019 period. This model simulates the daily crop growth and vertical water balance considering local environmental conditions, crop characteristics, and farm management. We partition WFs into green (water from precipitation) and blue (from irrigation or capillary rise), and differentiate between rainfed and irrigated production systems. The outputs include gridded datasets and national averages for unit water footprints (expressed in m3 t−1 yr−1), water footprints of production (m3 yr−1), and crop water use (mm yr−1). We compare our estimates to other global studies covering different historical periods and methodological approaches. Provided outputs can offer insights into spatial and temporal patterns of agricultural water consumption and serve as inputs for further virtual water trade studies, life cycle and water footprint assessments.

The Water Footprint of Pastoral Dairy Farming: The Effect of Water Footprint Methods, Data Sources and Spatial Scale

The water footprint of pastoral dairy milk production was assessed by analysing water use at 28 irrigated and 60 non-irrigated ‘rain-fed’ pastoral dairy farms in three regions of New Zealand. Two water footprint methods, the WFN-based blue water footprint impact index (WFIIblue) and the Available WAter REmaining (AWARE) water scarcity footprint (WFAWARE), were evaluated using different sets of global or local data sources, different rates of environmental flow requirements, and the regional or catchment scale of the analysis. A majority (~99%) of the consumptive water footprint of a unit of pastoral dairy milk production (L/kg of fat- and protein-corrected milk) was quantified as being associated with green and blue water consumption via evapotranspiration for pasture and feed used at the studied dairy farms. The quantified WFIIblue (-) and WFAWARE (m3 world eq./kg of FPCM) indices ranked in a similar order (from lowest to highest) regarding the water scarcity footprint impact associated with pastoral dairy milk production across the study regions and catchments. However, use of the global or local data sets significantly affected the quantification and comparative rankings of the WFIIblue and WFAWARE values. Compared to the local data sets, using the global data sets resulted in significant under- or overestimation of the WFIIblue and WFAWARE values across the study regions and catchments. A catchment-scale analysis using locally available data sets and calibrated models is recommended to robustly assess water consumption and its associated water scarcity impact due to pastoral dairy milk production in local catchments.

Estimating the global production and consumption-based water footprint of a regional economy

The current scenario of increasing use and pollution of water resources and the effects of climate change on natural supply coexist with a high trade interconnection, where impacts are transmitted from local to global scales. Identifying and quantifying these impacts is essential to focus and coordinate policies for sustainability. In this context, this study develops a methodology to estimate the pressures of a regional economy on global water resources. Unlike previous studies, which have focused mainly on the regional and national blue water footprint (WF) of consumption, the proposed framework integrates in an innovative way: i) an estimation of the global green, blue and grey WF, ii) a comparison between production and consumption-based approaches, iii) a spatial disaggregation, and iv) a scarcity-based assessment. Specifically, a regional input-output (IO) model and a global multiregional IO model are used, which allows identifying the origin and quantifying the water incorporated in imports. The Tuscany region in Italy is considered as a case study, where the domestic WF has been studied, but global impacts on water resources are unknown. The results show that, although 42.7 % of Tuscany's imports come from outside Italy, the pressures on water resources exerted abroad represent 81.2 % (production) and 73.4 % (consumption) of total. This result is amplified when only water incorporated under scarcity conditions is considered, reaching 96.3 % (production) and 94.6 % (consumption). The proposed approach allows characterizing the most significant impacts, which could guide policies to promote the consumption and import of products with low water incorporated under stress conditions.

Case Study on the Impact of Water Resources in Beef Production: Corn vs. Triticale Silage in the Diet of Limousine × Podolian Young Bulls.

In this study, we have included the water footprint (WF) in the process of optimizing animal feed rations. The global footprint of cattle production accounts for the largest share (33%) of the global water footprint of livestock production. Using two homogeneous groups of Limousine × Podolian young bulls, two different diets were compared: corn silage feeding (CSF), with a corn silage-based diet; and triticale silage feeding (TSF), with a triticale silage-based diet. Silage constituted about 41% and 46% of the feed composition (for CSF and TSF, respectively). Diets were characterised by the same energy and protein content. Despite the lower WF in the TSF group than in the CSF group (7726 vs. 8571 L/day/calf respectively), no significant differences were found in animal performances (i.e., daily weight gain and final weight), feed conversion or income over feed costs. These results show that simple production decisions can have a significant impact on water resource. Therefore, the use of triticale silage should be further promoted, especially in world regions with limited water resources where low WF feed formulation is more strategic than elsewhere.

Dynamics of the Agricultural Water Footprint and the Decoupling Associations with Agricultural Economic Growth in Hangzhou, China

Understanding the relationship between the agricultural water footprint (AWF) and agricultural economic growth (AEG) is of great significance for promoting sustainable agriculture and regional economic development. In this study, we used agricultural statistics data from Hangzhou from 2010 to 2021 to calculate the AWF, predicted the decoupling relationship between the AWF and AEG, and explored the influencing factors of the decoupling relationship between the AWF and AEG. The results showed the following: (1) The AWF in Hangzhou exhibited a decreasing trend, with a reduction from 58.88 × 108 m3 in 2010 to 37.80 × 108 m3 in 2021; this was mainly related to the decline in the water footprints of grain, pork, and egg production. (2) The strong decoupling accounted for 63.64% of the decoupling between the AWF and AEG in Hangzhou during the study period. It was found that an agricultural structure adjustment was the main factor for achieving decoupling between the AWF and AEG. Under the guidance of policy, the decoupling between them could be changed by regulating the output of agricultural products with different water footprint contents per unit. (3) From 2022 to 2026, the AWF in Hangzhou is expected to decrease to 28.21 × 108 m3, while the agricultural economy is projected to increase to CNY 40.008 billion. There will continue to be a strong decoupling status between the AWF and AEG in Hangzhou.

Spatiotemporal variations of water, land, and carbon footprints of pig production in China

Pig production not only consumes large water and land, but also emits substantial greenhouse gases. Scholars have used environmental footprint, including water, land, and carbon footprints, to assess the environmental impacts of pig production. However, there is a lack of simultaneous analysis of water, land, and carbon footprints for pig production, particularly in China, the leading pig breeding and consumption country in the world. In this study, we used environmental footprint analysis to develop a water-land-carbon footprint model for pig production system from the life cycle perspective. We also examined virtual water, land and carbon flows embedded in trade. The life cycle of pig production mainly involves feed crop cultivation, feed production, and pig breeding. Then we analyzed the water, land, and carbon footprints of the pig production in China from 1990 to 2018. The findings indicated that both the total water footprint and the total land footprint increased, whereas the total carbon footprints fluctuated over the years. All the unit footprints generally decreased. Feed crop cultivation had a significant impact on the footprints. Regarding the spatial characteristics in China, all the three total footprints were generally higher in the southeast compared to the northwest. While the unit footprints in different provinces exhibited spatial heterogeneity, primarily attributed to the different feed consumptions. Overall, the trade of feed crop shifted virtual water, land and carbon flows from the north to the south, reducing the three total footprints on the whole. To achieve a resource-saving and eco-friendly pig production in China, we proposed some potential recommendations, including improving feed crop cultivation techniques, reducing feed conversion ratio, implementing precision feeding, and managing manure. We hope not only mitigate the environmental impacts of China’s pig production, but also provide references for achieving agricultural sustainability in other regions of the world.

Water footprint approach in measuring the potential of bioenergy production from agricultural products

Abstract Promoting the supply of energy from biomass to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases has resulted in focusing on the production of important products from the perspective of energy and, ultimately, increasing water consumption. Therefore, in the present study, an index called water footprint was used to investigate the link between water and bioenergy. For this purpose, information related to grain maize crops was collected in the study plains of Fujian Province in eastern China. Based on the calculations, it was found that the water footprint of maize products in the province was equal to 3,728 m3/ton on average, and the water footprint of its biomass was estimated to be 219.6 m3/ton. Moreover, the investigation of the water footprint of maize biomass energy showed that the highest and lowest water footprints per unit of energy are found in Ningde and Zhangzhou, respectively. It was also found that the plains of Zhangzhou, Ningde and Xiamen have little priority for biomass production because the water footprint of their biomass energy is less than 900 MJ/m3. On the other hand, Nanping and Putian plains with bioenergy water footprints between 1,500 and 1,800 MJ/m3 have high priority for using maize biomass for energy production.

Crop water footprints and their driving mechanisms show regional differences

Identifying crop water footprints and their driving mechanisms is of significant importance for regional water resources management and ecological sustainability. However, there is currently a lack of comparative studies on drivers of crop water footprint among multiple regional types. In this study, based on quantifying the crop water footprints in seven regions (North China, Northeast China, East China, Central China, South China, Southwest China, and Northwest China) in mainland China from 1996 to 2020, the path analysis method was used to reveal their driving mechanisms. The results showed that the average annual agricultural water footprint was 1448.2 Gm3, with blue water, green water, and grey water accounting for 10.1 %, 66.6 %, and 23.3 %, respectively. Fruits and cereals jointly contributed 80 % of the total water footprint. The crop water footprint in East China was significantly higher than in other regions, accounting for 29.3 % of the national water footprint. The average crop production water footprint was 1080.4 mm, with the highest values observed in East China and South China, and the lowest in Northeast China and Southwest China. Except for East China, the crop production water footprint in other regions showed an increasing trend over time. Irrigation area ratio had the greatest impact on crop production water footprint except for Northeast China, while chemical fertilizer consumption significantly influenced crop production water footprints in North, East, Central, Southwest and Northwest China. Additionally, per capita GDP, per capita net income and irrigation water use efficiency also had considerable effects on crop production water footprint in Northwest China. The research findings can provide a valuable reference for the development of strategies for the efficient and sustainable utilization of agricultural water resources in different regions.

Life cycle water footprint and carbon footprint analysis of coal gasification to clean fuel dimethyl ether

Dimethyl ether is an ideal clean fuel that can replace diesel and liquefied petroleum gas, and has broad application prospects. The work analyzed the life cycle water footprint and carbon footprint of dimethyl ether production from coal gasification. The research results reveal that the water footprint of coal-to-dimethyl ether under the basic scenario is 11.2667 L H2O/MJ, and the carbon footprint is 0.2716 kgCO2-eq/MJ. In the whole production process, the synthesis of dimethyl ether is the main water consumption unit, occupying 99.70% of the whole water footprint. At the same time, this unit is also the major carbon emission unit, occupying 95.26% of the total carbon footprint. By studying and analyzing the distribution of water consumption and carbon emissions in the production process of dimethyl ether, it is found that power utilization is the major contributor to water footprint, accounting for 68.44% of the total water footprint. Although direct carbon emissions are the main impact on the carbon footprint, with electricity usage accounting for 6.33% of the total carbon footprint, they cannot be ignored. Based on this, the water footprint and carbon footprint of 31 provinces under the influence of power structures are studied. In addition, sensitivity analysis was conducted to study water consumption and carbon emissions under 24 different scenarios. This study introduced the relevant water consumption and carbon emissions in the process of producing dimethyl ether from coal gasification within a certain range, and emphasized the impact of regional differences in power structure on the results. The research results provide important references for reducing resource consumption in the production process of dimethyl ether and formulating environmental investment plans.

Spatial Characteristics and Driving Forces of the Water Footprint of Spring Maize Production in Northern China

Using the water footprint (WF) approach to evaluate the water-use efficiency in agricultural production is crucial for assessing the sustainable use of water resources and mitigating water scarcity and pollution. This study calculated the blue, grey, green and total water footprints of spring maize production in Northeast China in 2019 and 2020 and compared the water footprint values at the provincial and municipal scales. In addition, this study analyzed the spatial variation and drivers of the water footprint. The results show that the average water footprints of spring maize production in Northeast China in 2019 and 2020 were 1.78 m3kg−1 and 2.00 m3kg−1, out of which the grey water footprint contributed the most, accounting for 55.19% and 49.85% of the total water footprint, respectively, while the blue water footprint contributed the least, accounting for only 17.44% and 18.68% of the total water footprint. At the provincial level, the water footprint of spring maize production in Northeast China was spatially clustered, with the lowest total water footprint in Heilongjiang Province and the highest total water footprint in Jilin Province. The spatial distribution difference of the spring maize unit yield was the fundamental factor explaining the difference in the water footprint. The precipitation, surface water resources, average temperature, effective irrigated area and the proportion of effective irrigated area also had impacts on the water footprint. This study provides a scientific basis for optimizing the distribution of spring maize production in Northeast China, formulating appropriate sustainable water resource management plans, improving water-use efficiency and realizing sustainable water resource management in Northeast China.

Optimizing the structure of food production in China to improve the sustainability of water resources

The conflict between the growing demand for food and limited water resources is intensifying. To further elucidate the relationship between food and water, we construct a water footprint life cycle assessment framework for food products and propose a modified algorithm for measuring a food's water footprint to assess the virtual water transfer between grain crops and animal products. To address the mismatch between regional water resources and food production, we propose a novel optimization model for food production structure, with both reducing water use and maintaining food security as its objectives. Using 2020 as an example, the analysis proposes an adjusted food production structure for China at national, regional, and provincial scales. The results show that 24.9 % of water consumed by grain crops is transferred to animal products through feed grain. The total water footprint of food production in China is 820.8 billion m3, with the blue water footprint accounting for 32.9 % of that total. The blue water footprint for food production in northern China is 161.8 billion m3, which is much larger than 108.2 billion m3 in southern China. Water scarcity is also greater in northern regions, which produce the majority of grain and animal products. Our optimization shows that a reasonable food production structure can balance water resources and food security by remarkably reducing China's total blue water footprint and increasing food production in the south while reducing production in certain northern provinces to ensure sustainable regional development.

Sustainable production of buildings based on Iranian vernacular patterns: A water footprint analysis

Vernacular (indigenous) buildings have been proven to be adaptive to climatic conditions. However, their water footprint benefits have not been discussed in the literature. This research aims to provide an in-depth evaluation of the influence of vernacular structures (including adobe, brick, stone, and wood) compared to modern structures (steel and concrete) on the water footprint of a selection of 42 residential buildings. The paper proposes that when building construction follows vernacular patterns, the contribution of the building industry to water pollution and water resources can be substantially reduced. Grey and blue water footprints are computed throughout production chains by employing water footprint accounting and life cycle inventory techniques. The grey water footprints of vernacular buildings are 327 times smaller than the grey water footprints of modern buildings. For modern buildings, the grey water footprint is dominated by the grey water footprint of steel and cement production. The blue water footprint of vernacular buildings is mostly related to construction personnel. While traditional building practices represent an important part of cultural heritage and have the potential to provide insights into sustainable and resource-efficient building practices, there are concerns regarding their compliance with present-day construction codes and standards. Therefore, this study evaluates the water footprint of both vernacular and contemporary building practices, taking into account their potential for sustainable building practices.

Water Footprint Analysis of Sheep and Goat from Various Production Systems in Northern China

Water scarcity is a significant global problem. Considerable water resources are consumed in the production of livestock and poultry products, thus posing a huge challenge to global freshwater resources. Sheep meat has the second highest water footprint among livestock meat products. Furthermore, as the demand for sheep meat increases on a year by year basis, water consumption continues to rise as a result. In order to make better informed decisions around water management, it is necessary to estimate the water footprint of animal husbandry. This study offers a comprehensive overview of the water footprint of sheep in Northern China. It analyzes the water footprint of feed production and virtual water using CROPWAT, based on the water footprint of sheep and goats in Shanxi under different production systems and feed components. The water footprint was calculated to be 6.03 m3/kg for sheep and 5.05 m3/kg for goats, respectively. Therefore, the water footprint of three farming modes, including grazing mixed and industrial in the Shanxi region was slightly higher than what other experts have evaluated for China. These data provide crucial information that can help reduce water resource consumption in animal husbandry and contribute to the development of sustainable strategies.

Tracking indirect water footprints, virtual water flows, and burden shifts related to inputs and supply chains for croplands: A case for maize in China

Increasing crop yields to ensure an adequate food supply under water and land scarcity is dependent on intensive agricultural inputs (such as fertilizers, pesticides, agri-films, or energy) which consume water resources and generate water pollution. However, the burden shifting of water quantity and quality stress from producers to importer and consumers through agricultural input production, trade, and consumption have been largely overlooked. Here, taking maize in China as the study case, we mapped step-by-step indirect water footprint (IWF) of maize production, virtual water (VW) flows related to inputs driven by maize consumption, and the resulting burden shifting of water quantity and quality. Bottom-up WF accounting approach was applied. The maize consumption was intercepted into two stages: the crop production stage (CPS) from raw materials to the farm, and the crop trade stage (CTS) from farm to fork. Results show that the national average blue and grey IWF of maize production was 3.91 and 26.86 m3/t, respectively. In the CPS, the input-related VW flowed from the west and east coast to the north. In the CTS, the VW flows from the north to the south. Blue and grey VW flows in CTS caused by secondary flows of VW in CPS accounted for 48% and 18% of the total flows, respectively. In total VW flows along the maize supply chain, 63% of blue VW and 71% of grey VW net exports occurred in the north of severe water scarcity and water pollution levels. The analysis highlights the impact of the crop supply chain on water quantity and water quality in the consumption of agricultural inputs, the importance of step-by-step supply chain analysis for regional crop water conservation management, and the urgent need for integrated management of agricultural and industrial water resources.

Effects of the Eating Habits of Romanian Residents on the Water Footprint

Water footprint assessment is an analytical tool that helps us understand how activities, actions, and products from human activity influence the scarcity and pollution of water resources. The objectives of the paper are to study the water footprint that is necessary for the production of food for human consumption as an effective way to determine how food habits put pressure on water resources and to identify ways to reduce the stress found on them. To calculate the water footprint of food products consumed by Romanian residents, two types of data were used: information on the average annual net food consumption of each type of food considered during the research and the water footprint per unit of food consumed. In addition, an analysis was carried out based on the structure of the water footprint and the structure of food consumption. In terms of the structure of the water footprint, the contribution rate of the green water footprint is the highest, reaching 83.5%. This is followed by the blue water footprint and the gray water footprint, accounting for 9.04% and 7.46%, respectively. From the perspective of the structure of food consumption, the consumption of cereals, meat, milk, and dairy products contributed the most to the water footprint of residents’ food consumption, reaching 21.8% and 26.6%, respectively, and contributing 24.2% to the total water footprint of food consumption. Our research is useful for water management, improving the efficiency of use in agricultural technologies, and optimizing the structure of food consumption, such as reducing grain and meat consumption.

Yield, water, and carbon footprint of rainfed rice production under the lens of mid-century climate change: a case study in the eastern coastal agro-climatic zone, Odisha, India.

Water and carbon footprint assessment can be a good indicator of sustainable agricultural production. The present research quantifies the potential impact of near-future (2026-2050) climate change on water footprint (WF) and carbon footprint (CF) of farm-level kharif rice production of three locally grown varieties (Khandagiri, Lalat, and Swarna) in Odisha, India, under the two RCP scenarios of 4.5 and 8.5. The crop yield, water resources utilization, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were estimated using the calibrated and validated DSSAT crop simulation model. The precipitation and temperature estimates from three regional climate models (RCM), namely HadGEM3-RA, RegCM4, and YSU-RSM were downscaled using the quantile mapping method. The results revealed a considerably high increase in the total WF of the Khandagiri, Lalat, and Swarna rice varieties elevating up to 101.9%, 80.7%, and 71.8% respectively during the mid-century for RCP 4.5 scenario, and 67.3%, 66.6%, and 67.2% respectively for RCP 8.5 scenario relative to the baseline WF. Moreover, compared to the green WF, the blue WF was projected to increase significantly (~ 250-450%) in the future time scales. This could be attributed to increasing minimum temperature (~ 1.7°C) and maximum temperature (~ 1.5°C) and reduced precipitation during the rice-growing periods. Rice yield was projected to continually decline in the future period (2050) with respect to the baseline (1980-2015) by 18.8% and 20% under RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios respectively. The maximum CF of Swarna, Lalat, and Khandagiri rice were estimated to be 3.2, 2.8, and 1.3 t CO2eq/t respectively under RCP 4.5 and 2.7, 2.4, and 1.3 t CO2eq/t respectively under RCP 8.5 scenario. Fertilizer application (40%) followed by irrigation-energy use (30%) and farmyard manure incorporation (26%) were the three major contributors to the CF of rice production. Subsequently, management of N-fertilizer dose was identified as the major mitigation hotspot, simultaneously reducing carbon footprint and grey water footprint in the crop production process.
