Treatment of waste stabilization pond effluent using natural zeolite for irrigation potential.

Direct utilization of treated effluent from natural treatment systems for irrigation can be challenging on sensitive plants due to high levels of salinity. Post-treatment of such an effluent prior to its applicability in irrigation can be of significant importance. In this study, the wastewater from a natural treatment plant was treated using a lab-scale filtration system with zeolite as a filter material. Three different column depths (0.5 m, 0.75 m, and 1 m) were used to investigate the effect of column depth on the treatment efficiency of the media. The suitability of the raw wastewater and the treated effluent from each column for irrigation purposes was investigated. The water quality parameters investigated were; electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), sodium (Na+), calcium (Ca2+), and magnesium (Mg2+). From the analysis results, it was observed that the column depth had a significant influence on the removal efficiency of the pollutants. The highest removal efficiency (94.58%) was achieved from the combination of electrical conductivity and 1 m column depth, while the lowest removal efficiency (10.05%) was observed from the combination of calcium and 0.5 m column depth. The raw wastewater fell mostly into a “very high” hazard, which is class four (C4) based on electrical conductivity and class four (S4) based sodium adsorption ratio; making it unsuitable for irrigation purposes. However, when the wastewater was subjected to 1 m column depth, the quality of the treated effluent improved significantly which in turn also improved the suitability of the effluent for irrigation purposes, with percent compliance ranging from 20.19% to 97.54%.

A new anti-fouling polysulphone nanofiltration membrane blended by amine-functionalized MCM-41 for post treating waste stabilization pond's effluent

Developing an effective and stable separation membrane for water treatment is of much interest while challenging because of the restrictions of membrane fouling and water flux reduction. To minimize this problem, in this work, highly porous and hydrophilic nanostructure of NH2-modified MCM-41 (NH2-MCM-41) was embedded successfully into the nanofiltration (NF) membrane body via commonly used phase inversion method. The unmodified and modified nanofiller was analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-Ray powder diffractometry (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and nitrogen adsorption–desorption. Furthermore, the modified membranes were characterized through surface and cross section FE-SEM images, the membrane surface roughness, hydrophilicity, antifouling properties and dye rejection. Benefiting from porous networks and enhanced hydrophilicity, the mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) revealed more prominent hydrophilic property as well as higher pure water flux (PWF) compared with naked membrane. The polysulphone (PSf) membrane modified with NH2-MCM-41-1.0 exhibited the highest pure water flux (PWF) of 65.43 kg/m2.h and superior antifouling characteristics with a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of around 97.0% and an irreversible fouling resistance (Rir) of 3.2%. Furthermore, the optimal membrane possessed high dye rejection (100%) and antifouling capacity (FRR of 97%) while filtering a field sample, effluent from a local stabilization pond treating municipal wastewater. The fabricated membrane in this study is believed to pave pathways for constructing NF membranes with superior effectiveness for other municipal and industrial wastewaters treatment.

Monitoring Microbial Populations and Antibiotic Resistance Gene Enrichment Associated with Arctic Waste Stabilization Ponds.

Wastewater management in the Canadian Arctic is challenging due to climate extremes, small population sizes, and lack of conventional infrastructure for wastewater treatment. Although many northern communities use waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) as their primary form of wastewater treatment, few studies have explored WSP microbial communities and assessed effluent impacts on receiving waters from a microbiological perspective. Here, we used 16S rRNA gene and metagenome sequencing to characterize WSP and receiving water microbial communities for two time points bracketing the spring WSP thaw in Baker Lake (Nunavut) and compared these results to other Nunavut WSPs in Cambridge Bay and Kugluktuk. Most amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) recovered from these WSP samples belonged to the phylum Proteobacteria, with considerable variation between the three locations and only six ASVs shared among the WSPs at >0.2% relative abundance. Wastewater indicator ASVs for the Baker Lake WSP were identified, and few indicator ASVs were detected in samples originating from other upstream or downstream sites. The metagenomic data revealed a strong enrichment of antibiotic resistance genes for WSP samples relative to downstream and reference samples, especially for genes associated with macrolide resistance. Together, our results provide a baseline characterization for WSP microbial communities, demonstrate how indicator ASVs can be used to monitor attenuation and dilution of effluent microorganisms, and reveal that WSPs can serve as hot spots for antibiotic resistance genes.IMPORTANCE Given that the microbial communities of Arctic waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) are poorly studied to date, our characterization of multiple WSP systems and time points provides important baseline data that will assist with ongoing monitoring of effluent impacts on downstream aquatic ecosystems in the Arctic. This research also identifies indicator amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) of WSPs that will be helpful for future monitoring for WSP effluent attenuation and demonstrates that WSP microbial communities are enriched in antibiotic resistance genes. Given operational and infrastructure changes anticipated for wastewater treatment systems in the Arctic, baseline data such as these are essential for further development of safe and effective wastewater treatment systems.

Impact of Dairy Pond Sludge Application on Phosphorus Fractions in Paddock Soil

Waste stabilization ponds (WSP) used to treat dairy shed effluent hold significant loads of recoverable nutrients in the sludge. Land application of this pond sludge over grazing paddocks is a potential alternative to chemical fertilizer. Desludging of WSPs can further enhance the nutrient removal efficiency of the WSP and thereby improve the water quality of the WSP effluent and limit accumulation of phosphorus (P) in WSPs. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the nutrient content of soil after land application of pond sludge (PS) collected from WSP over grazing paddocks. In particular, P fractions (e.g. labile P as H₂O-P and NaHCO₃-P, and stable P as NaOH-P and HCl-P) were analysed in pond sludge applied soil collected from grazed paddocks. It was found that the application of PS significantly changed the composition of phosphorus in the soil compared with a control paddock that was not treated with PS. The inorganic P in the paddocks treated with pond sludge was 605 mg/kg, which was significantly higher than 67 mg/kg observed in the control paddock. Similarly, the soil treated with pond sludge exhibited increased P fractions of 245%, 36%, 47% and 3000% in terms of H₂O-P, NaHCO₃-P, NaOH-P and HCl-P, respectively, compared with the control paddock. The results of labile and stable P fractions in the soil samples show that PS could be a viable alternative to other forms of commercial fertilizers and a sustainable source of P for the dairy grazing paddocks.

Harvesting of algae in municipal wastewater treatment by calcium phosphate precipitation mediated by photosynthesis, sodium hydroxide and lime

The cultivation of microalgae within municipal and agricultural wastewater offers the opportunity to treat the water and partition nutrients into valuable biomass. Harvesting of those algae is a challenge, as conventional coagulants (iron and aluminum salts) contaminate algae and lock up phosphorus preventing beneficial reuse. We show that flocculation by calcium phosphate precipitation is capable of harvesting algae and phosphate from municipal wastewater in a form suitable for reuse. However, the initiation of flocculation by natural pH increase was infeasible. We harvested 93% of algal solids with an initial concentration of 113mg VSS/L and 96% of total phosphate from a waste stabilization pond effluent by initiating flocculation with 129mg-P/L of soluble phosphate and addition of 364mg/L quicklime to achieve a pH of 10.0, at a calculated cost of $0.05 USD per kL for alkali addition, which is similar to the chemical addition costs of conventional coagulation.

Wastewater treatment for reuse in urban agriculture; the case of Moshi Municipality, Tanzania

Urban agriculture is practiced by dwellers as an adaptive response to improve their food security, household income, create informal employment and diversify their livelihood through sales of surplus produce or savings. People in many cities, who practice urban agriculture, are in most cases unemployed and poor and are faced with water shortages to irrigate their crops. But treated wastewater can offer both water and nutrients needed for crop growth partly covering the water shortage already experienced. Therefore in this case, wastewater reuse becomes one of the important alternative ways to provide water for irrigation.The objective of this study was to monitor the effluent quality of the waste stabilization pond (WSP) and a combined WSP-constructed wetland (WSP-CW) treatment systems, assess its suitability for irrigation purposes and understand the public perception on the use of the treated effluent for agricultural production. This paper brings out the experience of the Moshi urban water authority in wastewater treatment and reuse for irrigation purposes. It looks on the quality of effluent from the two systems under their current operational regime and deduces the public health and socio economic implications.The results indicates the recorded TDS mean values of 587mg/L and 627mg/L, Nitrate–Nitrogen values of 9.19mg/L and 2.35mg/L, Fecal Coliform values of 1000 counts per 100mL and 4626 counts per 100mL, COD values of 159mgO2/L and 149mgO2/L for the WSP and WSP-CW effluents respectively. From the findings it has been shown that the treated effluent is suitable for restricted irrigation. It has also been shown that when improperly practiced, the use of the effluent is associated with public health risk to the workers who handle it, but despite this fact there is still some positive social economic implications. The community members who practice irrigated agriculture using the effluent as irrigation water have positive attitude on its use. The findings from this case study, is considered as an important learning in establishing an optimal wastewater treatment configuration to render suitable effluent for irrigation purposes.

Floating Wetlands for Management of Algal Washout from Waste Stabilization Pond Effluent: Case Study at Hikkaduwa Waste Stabilization Ponds

Waste stabilization ponds are advantageous waste water treatment processes, especially for developing countries. Nevertheless, in spite of the well known advantages of the implementation of the stabilization pond system, the effluent of this system has a significant amount of algae and high nutrients. Disposing this effluent with high contents algae and nutrients to the receiving waters can hinder the water reuse for a wide range of different applications, it is essential to look for a post treatment method that can provide considerable removal of algae, nutrients and organic matter from the effluent and at the same time, assure that the treatment system as a whole will maintain the advantages of the pond treatment processes. In this context, this research study was planned and intended to introduce a floating treatment wetland in which water hyacinth plants (Eichhornia crassipes) were used as macrophyte or vegetation in the part of the maturation pond area to control algae and nutrients in the effluent. With the application of the floating wetland the removal efficiencies were found to have increased in the maturation pond in terms of BOD and COD from 13.3% to 62.9% and 13.6% to 57.5%, respectively. In the case of TP and TN there were no significant reductions achieved prior to the establishment of the wetland but, reductions of 74.8% for TP and 55.8% for TN were achieved since the establishment of floating wetland. It was also possible to achieve a reduction of algal cell densities of 900 units/ml to zero unit/ml for the algal species of Spirulina and for Oscillatoria, the reduction was from 290 units/ml to 0 units/ml. In case of Chlorella and Pandorina, density reductions were 830,000 units/ml to 68,000 units/ml and 4300 units/ml to 280 units/ml respectively. Accordingly, the reduction efficiencies for Spirulina, Oscilltoria, Chlorella and Pandorina were reported to be improved from 31.8% to 100% and 4.5% to 100%, 34.2% to 91.8% and 42.2% to 93.5%, respectively. Application of this research can therefore be possible to polish waste stabilization pond effluent economically in order to re-use for various beneficial uses except potable use. Potential Macrophytes for Nitrogen Removal from Domestic Wastewater in Horizontal Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands in Tanzania

The role of six indigenous macrophytes (Cypreus grandis, C. dubis, Kyllinga erectus, Phragmites mauritianus, Typha domingensis and T. capensis) was investigated for nitrogen removal in horizontal subsurface flow constructed wet- lands at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania receiving waste stabilization ponds effluent. Seven horizontal sub- surface flow constructed wetlands were fed with the same source of domestic wastewater, where six of them were planted with a monoculture macrophytic species while the seventh was not planted and it acted as a control cell. On alternatedays' basis for twenty eight weeks both the influent and effluent water samples from each cell were collected and sent to the laboratory for ammonia-N, nitrate-N and Total Kjeldahl-N analysis. Nitrogen bioaccumulation and plant biomasses were analyzed during the transplanting time, after ten weeks and after flowering. Temperature, pH and plant heights were de- termined in situ. Results show that overall nitrogen removal was through denitrification where K.erectus performed better (75.59%) than the rest.Since P.mauritianus(74.37% )established well and had the longest growing period after harvest useso therefore it was selected as the best macrophyte. More research needs to be done prior to making a final decision on the use of any of these macrophytes for nitrogen removal depending on the weather and soils of the specific area.

Quantitative microbial risk assessment applied to irrigation of salad crops with waste stabilization pond effluents

A quantitative microbial risk assessment model for estimating infection risks arising from consuming crops eaten raw that have been irrigated with effluents from stabilization ponds was constructed. A log-normal probability distribution function was fitted to a large database from a comprehensive monitoring of an experimental pond system to account for variability in Escherichia coli concentration in irrigation water. Crop contamination levels were estimated using predictive models derived from field experiments involving the irrigation of several crops with different effluent qualities. Data on daily intake of salad crops were obtained from a national survey in Brazil. Ten thousand-trial Monte Carlo simulations were used to estimate human health risks associated with the use of wastewater for irrigating low- and high-growing crops. The use of effluents containing 10(3)-10(4) E. coli per 100 ml resulted in median rotavirus infection risk of approximately 10(-3) and 10(-4) pppy when irrigating, respectively, low- and high-growing crops; the corresponding 95th percentile risk estimates were around 10(-2) in both scenarios. Sensitivity analyses revealed that variations in effluent quality, in the assumed ratios of pathogens to E. coli, and in the reduction of pathogens between harvest and consumption had great impact upon risk estimates.

Active slag filters: rapid assessment of phosphorus removal efficiency from effluent as a function of retention time

There is increasing pressure to upgrade effluent ponds for phosphorus removal. Active slag filters offer a solution, but design information is limited. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) is a key factor in filter design because it controls filter treatment efficiency as well the filter substrate lifespan. This paper reports on a rapid method of continual looping of effluent through a filter column to obtain a relationship between HRT and phosphorus removal efficiency. Phosphorus removal declined logarithmically with respect to retention time. While the mechanisms that yield this relationship involve complex mass transfer and adsorption of phosphorus to Fe oxyhydroxide sites, in general terms, the adsorption rate is proportional to the adsorbate effluent concentration. Waste stabilization pond effluent treated by the slag achieved phosphorus removal efficiencies over 90% at extended HRTs greater than 70 hours, while 80% removal was obtainable in 30 hours. Higher phosphorus removal was achieved for slag treating real effluent compared with synthetic phosphate solution. This can be explained by: (1) different starting phosphorus concentrations in the synthetic phosphate solution and real effluent; and (2) the presence of constituents in real effluent that can enhance phosphorus removal, such as oxidized iron compounds, cations, algae and humic complexes. This new technique, which proved capable of replicating treatment efficiencies obtained from long-term column studies, offers rapid assessment of phosphorus removal efficiency as a function of retention time and thus will enable design engineers to size active filters on the basis of achieving the required phosphorus removal standards.

Chemical techniques for pretreating and regenerating active slag filters for improved phosphorus removal

Active slag filters are an emerging technology for removing phosphorus (P) from wastewaters. Recent research revealed that adsorption onto Fe oxides/oxyhydroxides at near‐neutral pH and oxidizing Eh is the key mechanism of P removal by melter slag filters. Currently, filter lifespan is limited by available adsorption sites. This study examined whether the performance and longevity of active filters could be improved via chemical treatment to create additional reactive sites as well as regenerate exhausted ones. Fresh original melter slag as well as slag from an exhausted full‐scale filter was tested. Chemical reagents that could manipulate the pH/Eh of the slag granule surfaces and potentially activate them for further P removal were used, namely hydrochloric acid (HCl), sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4). Waste stabilization pond effluent was then applied to the treated slag to assess the effectiveness of the treatments at improving P removal. Fresh slag treated with Na2S2O4 and HCl, respectively, retained 1.9 and 1.4 times more P from the effluent than the untreated fresh slag. These reagents were even more effective at regenerating the exhausted slag, increasing total retained P by a factor of 13 and six, respectively, compared with untreated slag. Sodium hydroxide was ineffective at increasing P removal. The higher P retention by the ‘treated exhausted slag’ compared with the ‘treated fresh media’ indicates that adsorption sites on melter slag filters become increasingly reactive with time. This research is the first study to provide evidence that P retention by active slag filters can be increased by both (1) chemical pre treatment and (2) chemical post‐treatment once their P removal is exhausted, thereby potentially transforming them from a single use system to a more viable, reusable treatment technology.

The effect of aerated rock filter geometry on the rate of nitrogen removal from facultative pond effluents

Rock filters are an established technology for polishing waste stabilization pond effluents. However, they rapidly become anoxic and consequently do not remove ammonium-nitrogen. Horizontal-flow aerated rock filters (HFARF), developed to permit nitrification and hence ammonium-N removal, were compared with a novel vertical-flow aerated rock filter (VFARF). There were no differences in the removals of BOD5, TSS and TKN, but the VFARF consistently produced effluents with lower ammonium-N concentrations (<0.3 mg N/L) than the HFARF (0.8-1.5 mg N/L) and higher nitrate-N concentrations (24-29 mg N/L vs. 17-24 mg N/L).

Suitability of adsorption isotherms for predicting the retention capacity of active slag filters removing phosphorus from wastewater

Active slag filters are an emerging technology for removing phosphorus (P) from wastewater. A number of researchers have suggested that adsorption isotherms are a useful tool for predicting P retention capacity. However, to date the appropriateness of using isotherms for slag filter design remains unverified due to the absence of benchmark data from a full-scale, field filter operated to exhaustion. This investigation compared the isotherm-predicted P retention capacity of a melter slag with the P adsorption capacity determined from a full-scale, melter slag filter which had reached exhaustion after five years of successfully removing P from waste stabilization pond effluent. Results from the standard laboratory batch test showed that P adsorption correlated more strongly with the Freundlich Isotherm (R(2)=0.97, P<0.01) than the Langmuir Isotherm, a similar finding to previous studies. However, at a P concentration of 10 mg/L, typical of domestic effluent, the Freundlich equation predicted a retention capacity of 0.014 gP/kg slag; markedly lower than the 1.23 gP/kg slag adsorbed by the field filter. Clearly, the result generated by the isotherm bears no resemblance to actual field capacity. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed porous, reactive secondary minerals on the slag granule surfaces from the field filter which were likely created by weathering. This slow weathering effect, which generates substantial new adsorption sites, is not accounted for by adsorption isotherms rendering them ineffective in slag filter design.

Water reuse for urban landscape irrigation: aspersion and health related regulations

The Mediterranean seaside resort of Le Grau du Roi includes 40 hectares of landscaped areas spray irrigated with river water supplied through a separate network. Wastewater collected from several municipalities is treated in an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and polished in waste stabilization ponds (WSPs). Planned substitution of treated wastewater for river water is hindered by spray irrigation prohibition within a 100 m distance from houses and recreational areas. WWTP and WSP effluents were monitored for pathogens with a particular attention to Legionella in Spring and Summer 2006. Helminth eggs, salmonellae and enteroviruses were never detected neither in WWTP effluent nor in the ponds. Legionella spp content was slightly higher or of the order of magnitude of river water contents. Regarding Legionella pneumophila contents, WSP effluent did not significantly differ from the river water. E.coli and enterococci contents in WSP effluents complied with the "excellent quality" criteria of the European Directive for coastal bathing waters. Therefore, substituting WSP effluents to river water is unlikely to alter health risks related to spray irrigation and, in this case, the buffer zone required by the French water reuse guidelines appears being short of support.

Effects of Redox Potential and pH Changes on Phosphorus Retention by Melter Slag Filters Treating Wastewater

The release of phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) from a melter slag filter in solutions of varying Eh and pH was examined. The filter had been removing P from waste stabilization pond effluent for several years. The study revealed that the highest P (95% of total P) and Fe (25% of total Fe) release from the slag occurred in the solution with the lowest Eh (-400 mV, relative to the standard hydrogen electrode, SHE) and lowest pH (4.9). Solutions with high pH (9.1) also proved favorable for P release (20 to 40% of total P) from the slag, at both reducing (-400 mV) and oxidizing (+300 mV) Eh. By contrast, solutions with pH 4.9 and 6.7 and oxidizing Eh (+300 mV) liberated the lowest P and Fe contents into the aqueous phase (<1% for both elements). The findings showed that Eh and pH are important parameters affecting P release from slag filters. At low Eh and low pH, P is released due to the dissolution of Fe oxides/oxyhydroxides, as supported by scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). At high pH, P is desorbed from negatively charged Fe oxide/oxyhydroxide surfaces. The results of this investigation are pertinentto the design and operation of melter slag filters that treat all forms of P-rich waters, such as wastewater, stormwater, and farm runoff. The study demonstrated that P retention by melter slag filters is optimal in water bodies characterized by near-neutral pH and oxidizing Eh because these conditions favor P adsorption onto Fe oxides/oxyhydroxides.

Phosphorus Removal Mechanisms in Active Slag Filters Treating Waste Stabilization Pond Effluent

Phosphorus (P) removal mechanisms from waste stabilization pond effluent by a melter slag filter were investigated. The studied filter had treated pond effluent for a decade, but lost its P removal efficiency after 5 years. The P distribution in the slag was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and chemical fractionation. The results showed the slag to be covered by a film comprising metal oxides/oxyhydroxides, organic resin, and Fe-phosphate precipitates. The slag porous matrix beneath this film hosted lower P concentrations and consisted of metal oxides/oxyhydroxides and calcmagnesium silicates. The study revealed the following mechanisms for P removal from effluent by the melter slag: (1) P adsorption onto metal oxides/oxyhydroxides which are ubiquitous throughout the porous slag matrix and its surface film; (2) P precipitation, mainly as Fe-phosphates (determined by SEM/EDS) on the surface film, derived from the release of metal ions into the solution phase; and (3) P sequestration by an amorphous organic resin that comprises a substantial proportion of the surface film, which was deduced by SEM/EDS and XRF. Results of chemical extractions performed on the slag demonstrated that 1 M HCl, which has been used to determine Ca-associated P in previous studies, is an unreliable Ca-P marker. By contrast, the citrate-dithionite reagent was shown to be a good indicator of Fe/Al-associated P and revealed that adsorption onto metal oxides/oxyhydroxides, in the porous matrix as well as its surface film, is the most significant P removal mechanism achieved by the slag filter.

Sunlight inactivation of Campylobacter jejuni and Salmonella enterica, compared with Escherichia coli, in seawater and river water

The inactivation of Campylobacter jejuni and Salmonella enterica, compared with Escherichia coli, was determined in 100 l chambers of seawater and river water located at an outdoor site. The chambers (paired with dark controls) were seeded with waste stabilization pond effluent and laboratory-cultured pathogens, and exposed to sunlight in summer and winter experiments. All sunlight inactivation (k(S)) rates, as a function of cumulative global solar radiation (insolation), were far higher than the corresponding dark (k(D)) rates, with a ranking (and average k(S) rates for seawater and river water, respectively) of: C. jejuni (3.23; 2.34)>S. enterica (0.51; 0.37)>E. coli (0.34; 0.26). All the T(90) (time to 90% inactivation) values were higher in winter than in summer, but there was far greater similarity between the summer and winter S(90) (insolation needed for 90% inactivation) values. The rapid inactivation of C. jejuni was attributed to a high susceptibility to photooxidative damage. The results suggest that, in sunlight-exposed waters, E. coli will be a more conservative indicator for C. jejuni than for S. enterica, and C. jejuni transmission as a pathogenic agent is less likely than for S. enterica.

AERATED ROCK FILTERS FOR ENHANCED AMMONIA AND FAECAL COLIFORM REMOVAL FROM FACULTATIVE POND EFFLUENTS

Nitrogen removal from wastewater is rapidly becoming an essential but expensive upgrade for many small wastewater treatment works in the UK. Using a pilot-scale waste stabilization pond effluent, this paper highlights a low-cost upgrading unit, capable of removing BOD, SS, ammonia and faecal colliforms. Results are given for 12 months of operation and it is suggested that these units could be used by the water companies when ammonia removal is necessary to meet with current legislative demands and prevent eutrophication of receiving watercourses.

Aerated rock filters for enhanced nitrogen and faecal coliform removal from facultative waste stabilization pond effluents

Facultative waste stabilization ponds in the UK, loaded at 80 kg BOD/ha day, produce effluents which comply with the European Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (i.e., < or = 25 mg filtered BOD/l and < or = 150 mg SS/l). However, the Environment Agency of England and Wales typically requires a higher effluent quality of < or = 40 mg/l unfiltered BOD and < or = 60 mg/l SS, both on a 95-percentile basis. An ammonium-nitrogen requirement might also be applied. Traditionally, maturation ponds and reedbeds have been used to upgrade facultative pond effluents, requiring large land areas. This paper describes and compares aerated and unaerated rock filter performance for BOD, SS, nitrogen and faecal coliform removals, and highlights the land-saving opportunities as maturation ponds and reedbeds become redundant.

Optical characteristics of waste stabilization ponds: recommendations for monitoring

The optical character of waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) is of concern for several reasons. Algal photosynthesis, which produces oxygen for waste oxidation in WSPs, is influenced by attenuation of sunlight in ponds. Disinfection in WSPs is influenced by optical characteristics because solar UV exposure usually dominates inactivation. The optical nature of WSPs effluent also affects assimilation by receiving waters. Despite the importance of light behaviour in WSPs, few studies have been made of their optical characteristics. We discuss simple optical measures suitable for routine monitoring of WSPs (including at sites remote from laboratories): optical density of filtrates - an index of dissolved coloured organic (humic) matter, visual clarity - to provide an estimate of the beam attenuation coefficient (a fundamental quantity needed for optical modelling) colour (hue) - as an indicator of general WSP 'condition' and irradiance attenuation quantifying depth of light penetration. The value of optical characterisation of WSPs is illustrated with reference to optical data for WSPs in NZ (including high-rate algal ponds) treating dairy cattle wastewater versus domestic sewage. We encourage increased research on optical characteristics of WSPs and the incorporation of optical measures in monitoring and modelling of WSP performance.
