Effect of Reaction Parameters on Catalytic Pyrolysis of Waste Cooking Oil for Production of Sustainable Biodiesel and Biojet by Functionalized Montmorillonite/Chitosan Nanocomposites.

The use of waste oils as pyrolysis feedstocks to manufacture high-grade biofuels has prompted researchers to focus on developing renewable energy to overcome the depletion of fossil fuel supplies and the global warming phenomena. Because of their high hydrogen and volatile matter concentration, waste oils are ideal raw materials for the production of biofuels. It is challenging to attain satisfactory results with conventional methods, such as transesterification, gasification, solvent extraction, and hydrotreating due to flaws such as high energy demand, long time, and high operating costs. Catalytic pyrolysis of waste edible oils was employed as a resource for the generation of biodiesel. The application of the catalytic cracking process has the potential to alleviate the existing situation. In this study of catalytic cracking conversion of waste cooking oil to produce different biofuels, grades were investigated using two heterogeneous catalysts. The catalysts were activated montmorillonite (PAMMT) clay and its modified form using a chitosan biopolymer (PAMMT-CH) nanocomposite. The catalysts were identified using infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns, transmittance electron microscopy images, surface area, and thermal stability. The catalysts were tested for their performances using different amounts (0.1–1% by weight) at a temperature assortment of 200–400 °C during a time range of 60–300 min. The experimental studies were carried out in a batch reactor. GC mass spectra were used to investigate the catalytic cracking products. Fractional distillation is used to separate the final products from various reaction conditions. The physicochemical properties of resulting biofuels were profiled by quantifying their densities, viscosities, specific gravities, pour points, flash and fire points, cetane numbers, carbon and ash residues, and sulfur contents. The optimum conditions of the yield product were 300 and 400 °C, catalyst weights of 0.7 and 0.8% w/v, and reaction times of 120 and 180 min concerning the (PAMMT) and (PAMMT-CH) nanocomposite, respectively. The determined properties were located within the limits of the specific standards of ASTM specifications. As a result, the PAMMT nanocomposite produced biofuel comparable to biodiesel according to ASTM specifications, while the PAMMT-CH nanocomposite produced biofuel comparable to biojet.

<p>Bioconversion of waste cooking oil for the production of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate using <em>Bacillus cereus </em>MPTDC</p>

Used cooking oil is generated as a byproduct during frying process. It cannot be reused for cooking process due to health issues such as cancer and other digestive disorders. Alternative strategy is utilization of this waste cooking oil for production of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) a biopolymer which can be used as a substitute for petroleum derived plastics [ABG1] or other value added products. In the present investigation, we used waste cooking oil as carbon source for PHB production by Bacillus cereus MPTDC. The optimum conditions of PHB production by Bacillus cereus MPTDC were waste cooking oil concentration of 2% (v/v), incubation time of 96 h, ammonium sulphate concentration of 7.5% and yeast extract concentration of 0.2%. Under optimized conditions the strain produced 3.777 g/L of PHB. The results indicate the potential of used cooking oil as carbon source for PHB production by Bacillus cereus MPTDC

Estimation of properties of mixed waste cooking oil for production of biodiesel

The major drawback of production of biodiesel in large scale is the cost of raw materials. Raw material source of biodiesel is mostly plant oil (Jatropha, Pongamia, Mahua, Neem, Cotton seed oil etc.) which requires large land area to grow. One of the best methods to reduce the production cost of biodiesel is to employ low quality feedstock, for instance waste cooking oil (WCO). This also solves the disposal problem of WCO. This is socioeconomic and environment friendly, it does not compete with edible oil resources. This study represents the biodiesel production from mixed waste cooking oil. Waste cooking oil collected from different hotels around Manipal, Udupi district of Karnataka State, and India. Collected WCO from various sources (from palm oil and sunflower oil users) have different physical and chemical properties. These WCO has mixed in different ratios ie. 50:50, 75:25 and 25:75 to reduce free fatty acid content of WCO without any chemical pre-treatment. Physio-chemical properties of mixed WCO has been carried out.

Catalytic pyrolysis of model compounds and waste cooking oil for production of light olefins over La/ZSM-5 catalysts

Waste cooking oil (WCO) and its model compounds (oleic acid and methyl laurate) are catalytically pyrolyzed in a fixed-bed reactor over La modified ZSM-5 catalysts (La/ZSM-5) aiming for production of C2-C4 light olefins. The LaO content in catalysts was set at 0, 2, 6, 10 and 14 wt%. The gas and liquid products are analyzed. The La/ZSM-5 catalyst with 6% LaO showed higher selectivity to light olefins when WCO and methyl laurate were pyrolyzed, and olefin content was 26% for WCO and 21% for methyl laurate. The catalyst with 10% LaO showed high selectivity to light olefins (28.5%) when oleic acid was pyrolyzed. The liquid products from WCO and model compounds mainly contain esters and aromatic hydrocarbons. More esters were observed in liquid products from methyl laurate and WCO pyrolysis, indicating that it is more difficult to pyrolyze esters and WCO than oleic acid. The coked catalysts were analyzed by temperature-programmed oxidation. The result shows that graphite is the main component of coke. The conversion of WCO to light olefins potentially provides an alternative and sustainable route for production of the key petrochemicals.
