ABSTRACT Because of the rising burden of cancer worldwide, cytotoxic drugs have become a significant threat to health and the environment. This investigation assessed the level of knowledge of oncology nurses regarding the risks associated with handling cytotoxic drugs and the management of cytotoxic waste and their impact on health and the environment. A qualitative study was conducted among oncology nurses at a Moroccan oncology centre. Most demonstrated a good understanding of cytotoxic drugs and their handling. But, there were notable deficiencies in foundational training. Occasional training sessions were offered, but they were considered insufficient in frequency and depth. The workload was identified as a major obstacle to proper safety protocol implementation. Although all participants recognised the dangers of improper disposal of cytotoxic waste, none had detailed knowledge of the specific environmental impacts. Improved training programmes and a reduced workload are critical to enhancing safety and efficiency in oncology centres.
