Gas-phase degradation of VOCs using supported bacteria biofilms.

Herein we report the use of Pseudomonas putida F1 biofilms grown on carbonized cellulosic fibers to achieve biodegradation of airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the absence of any bulk aqueous-phase media. It is believed that direct exposure of gaseous VOC substrates to biomass may eliminate aqueous-phase mass transfer resistance and facilitate VOC capture and degradation. When tested with toluene vapor as a model VOC, the supported biofilm could grow optimally at 300 p.p.m. toluene and 80% relative humidity, with a specific growth rate of 0.425 day-1 . During long-term VOC biodegradation tests in a tubular packed bed reactor, biofilms achieved a toluene degradation rate of 2.5 mg gDCW -1 h-1 during the initial growth phase. Interestingly, the P. putida F1 film kept biodegrading activity even at the stationary nongrowth phase. The supported biofilms with a biomass loading of 20% (wt) could degrade toluene at a rate of 1.9 mg gDCW -1 h-1 during the stationary phase, releasing CO2 at a rate of 6.4 mg gDCW -1 h-1 at the same time (indicating 100% conversion of substrate carbon to CO2 ). All of these observations promised a new type of "dry" biofilm reactors for efficient degradation of toxic VOCs without involving a large amount of water.

Biological mitigation of methane in presence of xylene and ethylbenzene in biofilters: Effect of pollutants concentrations and empty bed residence time

Landfill gas emissions cause serious environmental concerns due to the presence of methane (CH4), an important greenhouse gas (GHG) and several harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as xylene (X) and ethylbenzene (EB). A series of 9 up-flow biofilters (3 sections of 0.3 m each) packed with inorganic materials were used to eliminate CH4 as a single pollutant, a binary mixture of X and EB and a ternary mixture of CH4, X and EB. The CH4 concentration range was 2000–10000 ppmv while the VOCs (X and EB) individual concentrations were 200, 400 and 600 ppmv for empty bed residence times (EBRTs) ranging from 2.25 to 9 min over a period of 242 days. The highest CH4 removal efficiency (RE) in the ternary mixture was 41 ± 3% at a CH4 concentration of 2000 ppmv and X and EB individual concentrations of 200 ppmv for an EBRT of 9 min. Meanwhile, the highest X and EB-REs of 58 ± 3 and 57 ± 3% were obtained respectively, at the same concentrations of the components but at a shorter EBRT of 4.5 min. Almost 40% of CH4 biodegradation took place on the top section of the bioreactor while 50–60% of the VOCs biodegradation occurred in the middle section.

Fungal co-culture improves the biodegradation of hydrophobic VOCs gas mixtures in conventional biofilters and biotrickling filters

The present study systematically evaluated the potential of Candida subhashii, Fusarium solani and their consortium for the abatement of n-hexane, trichloroethylene (TCE), toluene and α-pinene in biofilters (BFs) and biotrickling filters (BTFs). Three 3.2 L BFs packed with polyurethane foam and operated at a gas residence time of 77 s with an air mixture of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were inoculated with C. subhashii, F. solani and a combination of thereof. The systems were also operated under a BTF configuration with a liquid recirculating rate of 2.5 L h-1. Steady state elimination capacities (ECs) of total VOCs of 17.4 ± 0.7 g m−3 h−1 for C. subhashii, 21.2 ± 0.8 g m−3 h−1 for F. solani and 24.4 ± 1.4 g m−3 h−1 for their consortium were recorded in BFs, which increased up to 27.2 ± 1.6 g m−3 h−1, 29.2 ± 1.9 g m−3 h−1, 37.7 ± 3.3 g m−3 h−1 in BTFs. BTFs supported a superior biodegradation performance compared to BF, regardless of the VOCs. Moreover, a more effective VOC biodegradation was observed when C. subhashii and F. solani were grown as a consortium. The microbial analysis conducted revealed that the fungi initially introduced in each BF represented the dominant species by the end of the experiment, with C. subhashii gradually overcoming F. solani in the system inoculated with the fungal consortium.

The role of Fe3O4@biochar as electron shuttle in enhancing the biodegradation of gaseous para-xylene by aerobic surfactant secreted strains

To study the role of electron shuttles in accelerating the biodegradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and provide theoretical support for purification of waste gas containing PX, two self-producing biosurfactant strains were used to improve solubility, and the magnetic Fe3O4@biochar composites were prepared as electron shuttles to accelerate extracellular electron transfer during the process of para-xylene (PX) biodegradation. The composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The biodegradation time of PX by Enterobacter sp. HN01 and Klebsiella sp. HN02 decreased from 192 h to 12 h and 120 to 12 h, and approximately 93.75% and 90.00% of the removal times were saved after the addition of the composites. Furthermore, the effects of Fe3O4@biochar on the bacterial biosurfactant secretion, self-enzyme activity, and bacterial growth inhibition by PX were explored. The electron transport capacity of Fe3O4@biochar was 4.583 mmol·e−/g detected by mediated electrochemical reduction and mediated electrochemical oxidation, and possible electron transport pathways were revealed. The possible products of PX biodegradation by HN01 and HN02 were determined through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The molecular structure of PX was deduced through density functional theory calculation to validate the key product. Results indicated that Fe3O4@biochar can be used as an electronic shuttle to accelerate extracellular electron transfer and significantly improve VOCs removal rate.

Moving forward sustainable solutions for VOCs biotrickling filtration through co-immobilised microorganisms

This study is moving forward with some available options for upgrading the biotrickling filters (BTFs) treating volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air, in the light of lowering their greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions. One of such options refers to the addition of the microalgae component to the biological matrix involved in such systems, by (co)immobilization, for the capture of the carbon dioxide issued from the VOCs biodegradation and potentially contributing to the overall VOCs removal performance. Particularly, alginate beads with (co) immobilized microorganisms (microorganisms isolated from commercial compost and microalgae Arthrospira platensis PCC 8005) are for the first time tested for this purpose, as follows: beads with entrapped compost-based microorganisms and attached microalgae (BTF-I); beads with an entrapped mixture of microalgae and compost-based microorganisms (BTF-II). Although both options provided promising performances in treating air contaminated with ethanol (as a model VOC in this study), the last option exhibited lower CO2 emissions and higher packing bed durability, being more prone to further development and implementation.

Biofiltration of methane in presence of ethylbenzene or xylene

Landfill gases (LFGs) are gaseous emissions containing several harmful compounds such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), volatile inorganic compounds (VICs) along with methane (CH4) which is a powerful greenhouse gas. In the case of small or older landfills, disposal of LFG can be economically challenging, and a possible solution is biofiltration. Biofiltration of CH4 in the presence of two VOCs was studied, ethylbenzene (EB) for biofilter 1 (BF1) and xylene (X) for biofilter 2 (BF2). Both biofilters were packed with inorganic packing materials and operated with an empty bed residence time (EBRT) of 4.5 min. Methane concentrations varied from 2000 to 10,000 ppmv along with 2 concentrations for both VOCs i.e., 200 and 500 ppmv. In the case of individual VOC's removal, the acclimation period of the microorganisms to EB and X were close to 30 days, indicating a similar adaptation period for X and EB. The addition of CH4 under low inlet concentration of 2000 ppmv had minor effect on VOCs biodegradation such that the average VOC removal efficiencies (REs) remained above 85% for VOC inlet concentrations of 200 ppmv while the average CH4-RE were around 56% in both biofilters. When CH4 inlet concentration increased up to 10,000 ppmv, inhibition became an issue for all VOC concentrations and dropped VOC and CH4-REs down to 80% of their original values. The type and concentration of the VOC played a key role in the intensity of the inhibition. In general, mass transfer was controlling the elimination of the three substrates.

Development and adaptation of the technology of air biotreatment in trickle-bed bioreactor to the automotive painting industry

The automotive painting industry is a source of environmental pollution caused by Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) present in the discharged ventilation air. To contribute to the mitigation of this type of air pollution, Ekoinwentyka Ltd. developed – from pilot scale to full scale – and adapted the technology of Compact Trickle Bed Bioreactor (CTBB) whose operating principle builds upon co-current downflow of the gas phase (polluted air) and liquid phase (solution of mineral salts) through a packed bed where active microorganisms are immobilized in the biofilm on the surfaces of packing elements. Pilot-scale bioreactor 0.32 m in diameter and 1.50 m total height had its packed bed inoculated with a consortium of microorganisms dominated by Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteria. During the experimental programme that lasted several months, the flow rate of air drawn from the ventilation system of the painting shop was changing between 1.0 and 10.0 m3/h and the inlet concentration of VOCs ranged from 10 to 200 ppm. By measuring VOC concentration in the purified air, the factor of VOC biodegradation was found to range between 85 and 99%. Based on pilot-scale experiments, full-scale CTBB has been developed 2.8 m in diameter and 10 m total height and installed as an add-on component of the ventilation system of the painting shop. Test operation at gas flow rates up to 6000 m3/h, confirmed VOC biodegradation factor at the level of 85–99% thus proving a positive result of CTBB technology adaptation to the conditions of the automotive painting industry.

In-situ biodegradation of volatile organic compounds in landfill by sewage sludge modified waste-char

VOCs are the major harmful pollutants released from MSW landfills, which are toxicity to human health. In order to in-situ biodegradation of VOCs released from landfill, two novel laboratory-scale biocovers, including waste-char obtained from MSW pyrolysis (WC), and sewage sludge modified the WC (SWC), are used to degradate VOCs. The removal performances of VOCs as well as the bacterial community in the WC and SWC are investigated in a simulated landfill systems with the contrast experiment of a landfill cover soil (LCS) for 60 days. Meanwhile, the adsorption-biodegradation of VOCs model compounds over the LCS, WC, and SWC are also tested in fixed-bed adsorption reactor and in-situ FTIR. The VOCs removal efficiencies by the SWC are maintained above 85% for a long-term, much higher than that of the LCS and WC. The higher removal efficiencies and long-term stability for VOCs degradation in SWC are attributed to a strongly positive synergistic between adsorption and biodegradation that the gaseous VOCs released from MSW is effectively adsorbed by the SWC due to its higher VOCs adsorption capacity, and then the adsorbed-VOCs is converted into CO2 and H2O by the microorganisms that consuming the adsorbed-VOCs as energy and carbon sources. Subsequently, the decrease of the adsorbed-VOCs in SWC would also promote the transformation of the gaseous VOCs into the adsorbed VOCs and accelerate the growth of microorganisms by taking the adsorbed-VOCs as the energy and carbon source, resulted in a higher adsorption rate and degradation rate for VOCs.

Enhanced biodegradation of styrene vapors in the biotrickling filter inoculated with biosurfactant-generating bacteria under H2O2 stimulation

Biotrickling filters (BTFs) applied to hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) suffer from limited mass transfer. Phase transfer kinetic and equilibrium effects limit the biodegradation of hydrophobic VOCs especially at high concentrations. This study evaluates two strategies for overcoming the problem. First, a natural process was used to enhance the aqueous availability of styrene, a hydrophobic VOC model, by inoculating the BTF with a mixture of biosurfactant–generating bacteria. This method achieved a maximum elimination capacity (ECmax) of 139 g m-3h−1 in the BTF at an empty bed residence time (EBRT) of 60s. The highest concentrations of the biosurfactants surfactin and rhamnolipid were 205 and 86 mg L-1, respectively, in this step. Sequencing 16S rRNA confirmed the presence of biosurfactant-producing bacteria capable of biodegrading styrene in the BTF including Bacillus sonorensis, Bacillus subtilis, Lysinibacillus sphaericus, Lysinibacillus fusiformis, Alcaligenes feacalis, Arthrobacter creatinolyticus, and Kocuria rosea. Second, the effect of adding H2O2 to the recycle liquid on the BTF performance was determined. The biodegradation and mineralization of styrene in the BTF operated at a loading rate of 266 g m-3h−1 and H2O2/styrene molar ratio of 0.05 with EBRT as short as 15 s were 94% and 53%, respectively, with the EC of 250 g m-3h−1. High concentrations of antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase and catalase: 56 and 7 U gbiomass-1, respectively) were produced and biosurfactant generation was increased in this step, contributing to enhanced styrene biodegradation and mineralization. The styrene biodegradation and mineralization values in the BTF in the last day operated under similar conditions but without H2O2 were 11.4% and 5.3%, respectively. The bacterial population had no considerable change in the BTF after adding H2O2. Accordingly, stimulating the BTF inoculated with biosurfactant-generating bacteria with H2O2 is a promising strategy for improving the biodegradation of hydrophobic VOCs.

Modeling atmospheric volatile organic compound concentrations resulting from a deepwater oil well blowout – Mitigation by subsea dispersant injection

The atmospheric concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated by surface slicks during an oil spill have not been extensively studied. We modeled oil transport and fate, air emissions, and atmospheric dispersion of VOCs from a hypothetical deepwater well blowout in De Soto Canyon of the Gulf of Mexico assuming no intervention and use of SubSea Dispersant Injection (SSDI) at the source during three week-long periods representing different atmospheric mixing conditions. Spatially varying time histories of atmospheric VOCs within ~2 km from the release site were estimated. As compared to the no-intervention case, SSDI dispersed the discharged oil over a larger water volume at depth and enhanced VOC dissolution and biodegradation, thereby reducing both the total mass of VOCs released to the atmosphere and the concentration of VOCs within 2 km from the release site. Atmospheric conditions also influenced the VOC concentrations, although to a lesser degree than SSDI.

Applying the Rayleigh Approach for Stable Isotope-Based Analysis of VOC Biodegradation in Diffusion-Dominated Systems.

Compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) has become an established tool for assessing biodegradation in the subsurface. Diffusion-dominated vapor phase transport thereby is often excluded from quantitative assessments due to the problem of diffusive mixing of concentrations with different isotopic signatures for CSIA interpretation. In soils and other unsaturated porous media volatile organic compounds (VOCs) however, are mainly transported via gas-phase diffusion and may thus prohibit a CSIA-based quantitative assessment of the fate of VOCs. The present study presents and verifies a concept for the assessment of biodegradation-induced stable isotope fractionation along a diffusive transport path of VOCs in unsaturated porous media. For this purpose data from batch and column toluene biodegradation experiments in unsaturated porous media were combined with numerical reactive transport simulations; both addressing changes of concentration and stable isotope fractionation of toluene. The numerical simulations are in good agreement with the experiment data, and our results show that the presented analytically derived assessment concept allows using the slope of the Rayleigh plot to obtain reasonable estimates of effective in situ fractionation factors in spite of diffusion-dominated transport. This enlarges the application range of CSIA and provides a mean for a better understanding of VOC fate in the unsaturated subsurface.

Microbial compositions and metabolic interactions in one- and two-phase partitioning airlift bioreactors treating a complex VOC mixture.

Engineered microbial ecosystems in bioscrubbers for the treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been complicated by complex VOC mixtures from various industrial emissions. Microbial associations with VOC removal performance of the bioscrubbers are still not definitive. Here, one- and two-phase partitioning airlift bioreactors were used for the treatment of a complex VOC mixture. Microbial characteristics in both bioreactors were uncovered by high-throughput metagenomics sequencing. Results showed that dominant species with specialized VOC biodegradability were mainly responsible for high removal efficiency of relative individual VOC. Competitive enzyme inhibitions among the VOC mixture were closely related to the deterioration of removal performance for individual VOC. Relative to the mass transfer resistance, the specialized biodegrading functions of microbial inoculations and enzymatic interactions among individual VOC biodegradation also must be carefully evaluated to optimize the treatment of complex VOC mixtures in bioreactors.

Physicochemical properties of some hydrophobic room‐temperature ionic liquids applied to volatile organic compounds biodegradation processes

AbstractBACKGROUNDIonic liquids (IL) are an interesting solvent choice for specific industrial applications since physicochemical properties can be fine‐tuned by modifying the substituent groups or the cation/anion pair. Hydrophobic ILs are considered green solvents and known to be good absorbents for hydrophobic organic compounds. Given their physicochemical properties an industrial application of such compounds is conceivable. Classical physicochemical properties such as density, viscosity and surface tension have a strong influence on the fluid dynamics; they were therefore measured and determined.RESULTSThe density, viscosity and surface tension of 23 hydrophobic ILs were measured at room temperature. These compounds are potential candidates for the absorption and biodegradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a two‐phase partitioning bioreactor. The thermal expansion coefficient, molecular volume, standard molar entropy and lattice energy were determined for each IL using empirical and semi‐empirical equations based on the density values. Viscosity values were correlated by the Arrhenius equation. Then, the surface excess enthalpy and surface excess entropy were determined from the surface tension values.CONCLUSIONThe influence of the presence of different functional moieties (unsaturated bonding, oxygenated and cyanide) and the side chain length in the physicochemical properties of these hydrophobic ILs was discussed, since their presence affected directly the density, viscosity and surface tension. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry

Biodegradation of Volatile Organic Compounds and Their Effects on Biodegradability under Co-Existing Conditions.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are major pollutants that are found in contaminated sites, particularly in developed countries such as Japan. Various microorganisms that degrade individual VOCs have been reported, and genomic information related to their phylogenetic classification and VOC-degrading enzymes is available. However, the biodegradation of multiple VOCs remains a challenging issue. Practical sites, such as chemical factories, research facilities, and illegal dumping sites, are often contaminated with multiple VOCs. In order to investigate the potential of biodegrading multiple VOCs, we initially reviewed the biodegradation of individual VOCs. VOCs include chlorinated ethenes (tetrachloroethene, trichloroethene, dichloroethene, and vinyl chloride), BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene), and chlorinated methanes (carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and dichloromethane). We also summarized essential information on the biodegradation of each kind of VOC under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, together with the microorganisms that are involved in VOC-degrading pathways. Interactions among multiple VOCs were then discussed based on concrete examples. Under conditions in which multiple VOCs co-exist, the biodegradation of a VOC may be constrained, enhanced, and/or unaffected by other compounds. Co-metabolism may enhance the degradation of other VOCs. In contrast, constraints are imposed by the toxicity of co-existing VOCs and their by-products, catabolite repression, or competition between VOC-degrading enzymes. This review provides fundamental, but systematic information for designing strategies for the bioremediation of multiple VOCs, as well as information on the role of key microorganisms that degrade VOCs.

Biodegradation of vapor-phase toluene in unsaturated porous media: Column experiments

Biodegradation of organic chemicals in the vapor phase of soils and vertical flow filters has gained attention as promising approach to clean up volatile organic compounds (VOC). The drivers of VOC biodegradation in unsaturated systems however still remain poorly understood. Here, we analyzed the processes controlling aerobic VOC biodegradation in a laboratory setup mimicking the unsaturated zone above a shallow aquifer. The setup allowed for diffusive vapor-phase transport and biodegradation of three VOC: non-deuterated and deuterated toluene as two compounds of highly differing biodegradability but (nearly) identical physical and chemical properties, and MTBE as (at the applied experimental conditions) non-biodegradable tracer and internal control. Our results showed for toluene an effective microbial degradation within centimeter VOC transport distances despite high gas-phase diffusivity. Degradation rates were controlled by the reactivity of the compounds while oxic conditions were found everywhere in the system. This confirms hypotheses that vadose zone biodegradation rates can be extremely high and are able to prevent the outgassing of VOC to the atmosphere within a centimeter range if compound properties and site conditions allow for sufficiently high degradation rates.

Evaluation of the fate and transport of chlorinated ethenes in a complex groundwater system discharging to a stream in Wonju, Korea

Chlorinated ethenes such as trichloroethylene (TCE) are common and persistent groundwater contaminants. If contaminated groundwater discharges to a stream, then stream water pollution near the contamination site also becomes a problem. In this respect, the fate and transport of chlorinated ethenes around a stream in an industrial complex were evaluated using the concentration of each component, and hydrogeochemical, microbial, and compound-specific carbon isotope data. Temporal and spatial monitoring reveal that a TCE plume originating from main and local source zones continues to be discharged to a stream. Groundwater geochemical data indicate that aerobic conditions prevail in the upgradient area of the studied aquifer, whereas conditions become anaerobic in the downgradient. The TCE molar fraction is high at the main and local source zones, ranging from 87.4 to 99.2% of the total volatile organic compounds (VOCs). An increasing trend in the molar fraction of cis-1, 2-Dichloroethene (cis-DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC) was observed in the downgradient zone of the study area. The enriched δ13C values of TCE and depleted values of cis-DCE in the stream zone, compared to those of the source zone, also suggest biodegradation of VOCs. Microbial community structures in monitoring wells adjacent to the stream zone in the downgradient area were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene-based pyrosequencing to identify the microorganisms responsible for biodegradation. This was attributed to the high relative abundance of dechlorinating bacteria in monitoring wells under anaerobic conditions farthest from the stream in the downgradient area. The multilateral approaches adopted in this study, combining hydrogeochemical and biomolecular methods with compound-specific analyses, indicate that contaminants around the stream were naturally attenuated by active anaerobic biotransformation processes.

Potential of non-thermal plasmas for helping the biodegradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by waste management plants

This paper investigates the feasibility of exploiting a non-thermal plasma (NTP) to treat the gaseous effluents released by the mechanical-biological treatments (MBTs) of waste and overcome the typical disadvantages of biofilters, whose removal efficiency is limited during acclimatization of bacteria, peaks of pollutant concentration or unstable airflow rates. A dielectric barrier discharge was applied to two mixtures of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and air. Ethanol and ethyl acetate (Mixture 1) and benzene, toluene and octane (Mixture 2), in addition to being typical constituents of the waste air released by MBTs of waste, also represent real emissions from two specific sectors that use biofiltration for air pollution control (APC): the printing (Mixture 1) and the petrochemical industries (Mixture 2). At the highest specific energy densities applied to the discharge (900–2520 J L−1), all the initial VOCs were removed by 95–100%. With respect to ethyl acetate, the maximal CO2 selectivity and the maximal energy yield resulted in 62–70% and 6–11 g kW−1 h−1, respectively; with regards to benzene, the same parameters resulted in 52–90% and 0.17–0.72 g kW−1 h−1, respectively. At medium-low energy, acetaldehyde and acetic acid were detected as the main byproducts of Mixture 1, while several trace compounds were found as the byproducts of Mixture 2. Interestingly, the byproducts generated are more polar than the initial compounds and, thus, their solubility in water is higher. Therefore, NTPs can be considered as a promising technology to help the biodegradation of VOCs in facilities where biofilters are used as APC systems.

Matrix effect on the performance of headspace solid phase microextraction method for the analysis of target volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in environmental samples

Solid phase microextraction (SPME) is a fast, cheap and solvent free methodology widely used for environmental analysis. A SPME methodology has been optimized for the analysis of VOCs in a range of matrices covering different soils of varying textures, organic matrices from manures and composts from different origins, and biochars. The performance of the technique was compared for the different matrices spiked with a multicomponent VOC mixture, selected to cover different VOC groups of environmental relevance (ketone, terpene, alcohol, aliphatic hydrocarbons and alkylbenzenes). VOC recovery was dependent on the nature itself of the VOC and the matrix characteristics. The SPME analysis of non-polar compounds, such as alkylbenzenes, terpenes and aliphatic hydrocarbons, was markedly affected by the type of matrix as a consequence of the competition for the adsorption sites in the SPME fiber. These non-polar compounds were strongly retained in the biochar surfaces limiting the use of SPME for this type of matrices. However, this adsorption capacity was not evident when biochar had undergone a weathering/aging process through composting. Polar compounds (alcohol and ketone) showed a similar behavior in all matrices, as a consequence of the hydrophilic characteristics, affected by water content in the matrix. SPME showed a good performance for soils and organic matrices especially for non-polar compounds, achieving a limit of detection (LD) and limit of quantification (LQ) of 0.02 and 0.03ngg−1 for non-polar compounds and poor extraction for more hydrophilic and polar compounds (LD and LQ higher 310 and 490ngg−1). The characteristics of the matrix, especially pH and organic matter, had a marked impact on SPME, due to the competition of the analytes for active sites in the fiber, but VOC biodegradation should not be discarded in matrices with active microbial biomass.

Biodegradation of n-eicosane and VOCs: Cometabolism in a marine consortium

Several batch scale assays were performed in order to establish a correlation between the microbial removals of neicosane, in presence of different concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which showed a partial removing.The selected VOCs were toluene and benzene. Results with benzene showed that the removal of this aromatic compoundwas decreased in presence of n-eicosane and the lowest removal was obtained when VOC concentration was higher. Theremoval of hydrocarbon was increased when VOC concentration was increased. In the assays with toluene, n-eicosanereached a higher removal when VOC concentration was increased, but the aromatic compound showed a decrease in itselimination dynamics. Control assays performed with VOCs at 28 mg/L without hydrocarbon showed higher removaldynamics for benzene than toluene. Also control assays of n-eicosane at two different concentrations but without anyVOC showed that its removal dynamic decreased in the absence of the aromatic compounds for both assays. The kineticadjustrnent obtained for toluene (Hill kinetic model) showed that the removal rate of this compound increased while itsconcentration at water-phase was higher. Although, when it was used a concentration of 50 mg/L or higher, the removalrate became almost constant. For benzene, the higher removal rate was reached with 38 mg/L. With higher concentration,the kinetic model showed inhibition, so the adjustrnent analyses fitted for a Monod kinetic model. n-Eicosane showed abetter adjustrnent with the Haldane kinetic model with an initial concentration of 188 mg/L for the highest removal rate.
