The effect of vocabulary learning strategy training on vocabulary strategy use

Nowadays, it is recommended to train students on how to learn vocabulary, for it is not practicable to teach all the English language words. The purpose of this article was to find out the effect of vocabulary learning strategy training on vocabulary learning strategy use of university students. The research design used in this study was experimental. 40 students (20 students in each group) from both experimental and control groups completed the adapted Schmitt’s (1997) Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire (VLSQ) before and after the vocabulary learning strategy training. After the students completed the pre-training questionnaire, only the experimental group learners received vocabulary learning strategy training for 16 hours. The researcher prepared the vocabulary strategy training material by integrating the vocabulary lessons incorporated from different books. Paired samples t-test was computed on SPSS version 24 to find out if there was a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups regarding vocabulary learning strategy use. The study found that the experimental group participants improved their vocabulary usage significantly better than the control group participants in the five among six major categories of vocabulary learning strategies (less than the p-value of 0.05). Future researchers can study the effect of training in learning strategies of other language skills and sub-skills and can improve their strategy usage. One of the significance contributions of this study could be curriculum designers might employ this article as an input to incorporate vocabulary learning strategies into English language training materials and improve students’ vocabulary strategy use.

The Relationship Between Depth of Academic English Vocabulary Knowledge and Academic Success of Second Language University Students

This study investigates the relationship between depth of academic vocabulary knowledge and academic success among Saudi English-as-a-foreign-language university students. Fifty fourth-year university students majoring in English completed a vocabulary depth test, the Word Associates Test (WAT), based on the Academic Word List (AWL). Then, students’ grade point averages (GPAs) were obtained as a measure of academic success. Furthermore, a vocabulary learning strategy (VLS) questionnaire was administered to explore the students’ use of various VLSs. In addition, two focus group discussions were conducted to elicit participants’ views and experiences of English vocabulary learning. The scores on the WAT were positively correlated ( r = .407, p < .01) with GPA. Results of the regression analysis show that the WAT scores accounted for 16.6% of the variance in GPA. Analysis of the data on VLSs reveals that the participants were medium-level VLS users who employed metacognitive strategies most frequently. Strategies that involve focused intentional vocabulary learning, such as learning from word cards and wordlists, were reported to be used the least. Results of the present depth study support previous findings of vocabulary breadth studies on the high predictive power of academic vocabulary knowledge in relation to academic success. Implications of the results for academic vocabulary teaching and learning are considered.

French Vocabulary Learning Strategies of French Majors at Khon Kaen University

The present study sought to investigate learning strategies and French vocabulary memorization strategies as well as to examine French vocabulary learning strategies employed among French-majored students at Khon Kaen University with high, moderate and low levels of GPA. In particular, the participants were 89 French-majored students, including second-year, third-year, and fourth-year students. In data collection, the instruments used in this study were a 38-item questionnaire concerning learning strategies and French vocabulary memorization strategies adapted from Schmitt’s Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire (2000). Statistics used to analyze the collected data included percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The results demonstrated that the most frequently used strategy for the discovery of a new word’s meaning was determination strategies, the most commonly used of which were using a French-Thai dictionary application and guessing word meaning from textual context respectively. Concerning strategies for consolidating a word, the most frequently employed was memory strategies. Pronouncing the word aloud while studying and practicing its spelling were two of the most frequently used strategies. In the meantime, in terms of cognitive strategies, most often employed were written repetition and the use of an application for taking notes and memorizing words. Lastly, regarding metacognitive strategies, most frequently utilized among the students were learning and memorizing words through social media as in Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Comparing strategies employed among the students with high, moderate and low levels of GPA, it was found that the strategy for the discovery of a new word’s meaning most frequently employed among all these groups was using the French-Thai dictionary application. Vocabulary Learning Strategies Employed by Indonesian Virtual Exchange Students

This study investigated the types of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) employed by Indonesian college students. The study specifically aimed to find out (a) the most and the least frequently used VLS, and (b) the most useful VLS. A total of 105 nursing students who attended a virtual exchange program during the odd semester of 2021/2022 academic year participated in this study. This was ex post facto research which used a vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire to collect the data. To answer research questions, the collected data were analyzed by using SPSS statistics 25.0, including the descriptive statistics. The overall findings revealed that in terms of five categories, determination strategies were reported to be the most frequently used strategies and social strategies were the least ones. In terms of individual strategies, the most frequently used vocabulary learning strategies were ‘using bilingual dictionaries either print or electronic’, ‘guessing word meaning through the context’, and ‘learning new vocabulary items through vocabulary videos”. The least frequent ones were ‘asking the word’s synonym to the teacher’ and ‘communicating with native speakers. Furthermore, the participants assumed that ‘using bilingual dictionaries either print or electronic’ and ‘taking notes of new words’ as the most useful strategies. Relationship between Vocabulary Learning Strategies and Vocabulary Size: Evidence from Saudi Female EFL Learners

Vocabulary knowledge has been largely viewed as an important component in language learning and language acquisition. Understanding how EFL learners approach vocabulary learning is also considered crucial for language teachers and researchers to develop an effective learning environment that may stimulate high-quality learning outcomes. Studies on vocabulary size suggest that Saudi EFL learners have impoverished vocabulary knowledge, but there is still little known about how likely certain vocabulary learning strategies may enhance vocabulary knowledge. This study aims to address this issue. We specifically aim to identify the type of vocabulary learning strategies more frequently used among Saudi female EFL learners, and how the use of certain learning strategies may influence vocabulary knowledge. We asked participants to complete two test instruments: the Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire and the Vocabulary Size Test. All data was gathered using an online survey and the results showed evidence that participants largely rely on metacognitive learning strategies to learn English vocabulary, and all participants seem to have no problems with high- and mid-frequency words. Our relationship tests also suggest that the increase in using the metacognitive strategy is likely to enhance vocabulary knowledge among our participants. These results together are thought to provide useful insights to language learning theories in general and to Saudi teachers and policymakers in particular about how they can help students overcome challenges associated with their vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary size.

A Longitudinal Analysis of Growth in Vocabulary Size and Strategy Use: Focusing on Japanese EFL Senior High School Students

The purpose of this study is to determine whether a vocabulary size test is a valid and reliable measure of longitudinal growth in vocabulary size (VS), and to investigate the relationship between growth in VS and use of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS). Kasahara''s (2006) revised version of Mochizuki''s (1998) Vocabulary Size Test (VST) was administered to 209 Japanese senior high school students at three time points during their course of study. In addition, a VLS questionnaire based on Schmitt’s (1997) taxonomy was administered and used to investigate the relationship between vocabulary growth and patterns of strategy use. Cronbach alpha for the three administrations of the VST ranged from .79 to .85, indicating adequate reliability of the VST. A cluster analysis of strategy use yielded three distinct patterns: low, medium, and high frequency use of strategies. A two-way mixed ANOVA with year as the within-subjects factor and strategy cluster as the between-subjects factor found a significant mean effect for year and strategy use, but no effect for the interaction. The large effect size for year supports the claim that the revised VST is a valid measure of vocabulary size for Japanese high school students. The relationship between VS and strategy use confirms the potential of the revised VST for investigating theoretical and pedagogical factors affecting vocabulary growth.

The vocabulary learning strategy use of Iranian elementary EFL learners

In order to learn vocabulary efficiently, the utilisation of learning strategies is very important and surely it depends on learners’ attempts. The current study aimed at examining the strategies that Iranian elementary English as a foreign language (EFL) learners adopt for learning English vocabulary. To this end, based on the performance of the participants on the Quick Placement Test, the researcher recruited 100 participants through availability sampling. To determine the strategies that the participants employ for learning English vocabulary, Schmitt’s taxonomy of vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs) questionnaire was administered. The findings of the current study indicated that Iranian elementary EFL students were medium VLS users. The social strategy was found as the most frequently used category of strategies, followed by memory, determination, cognitive and metacognitive strategy. Analiza korelacji pomiędzy nasileniem cech osobowości a strategiami uczenia się leksyki na przykładzie polskich uczących się języka niemieckiego na trzecim etapie edukacyjnym

Developing learners' lexical subsystem is one of the most important tasks of foreign language didactics. The observable turn towards vocabulary (,,Wortschatzwende’’) has contributed to an in-depth reflection on learners' lexical competence, including their strategic competence. The aim of this article is to present results of a correlational research concerning the influence of personality variables (understood according to the Five-Factor Model) on the range and frequency of strategies used by Polish high-school students to learn German vocabulary. The research project described in this article was conducted in April 2021. The polish adaptation of the NEO Five-Factor Inventory was applied to examine the learners’ personality traits. The Polish version of Schmitt's Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire (VLSQ) was used to investigate students’ preferred strategies for learning German vocabulary. Based on the conclusions from the research, an attempt was made to formulate practical guidelines for foreign language teachers concerning the possibilities of developing learners' lexical competence. The report is complemented by a list of open research questions and problems in this field.

The Correlation between University Students’ Vocabulary Learning Strategies and The Vocabulary Mastery Level

This research was intended to find the correlation between the students’ vocabulary learning strategies and the vocabulary mastery level. The research design of this study was a quantitative research and the study population was the second year students of English study program FKIP Universitas Riau. 41 participants were selected from the second year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau using the cluster random sampling technique. The instruments of this study were vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire and vocabulary level test. The data showed that 53.7% of students was used the vocabulary learning strategy in learning new vocabularies and 31.7% students were high vocabulary level. Moreover, the result of the study indicated that there was a negative correlation between two variables. The value of correlation coefficient was 0.813. It was on scale 0.00 – 1.00. It meant that the correlation between the students’ vocabulary learning strategies and the vocabulary mastery level of the second year students were categorized as high correlation. This research would assist students to understand the correlation between used the strategy in learning new vocabularies in order to increase the level of vocabulary mastery.

Identifying Vocabulary Learning Strategies Used by Undergraduate Students in Different Proficiency Levels

The aim of this study is to discover diverse vocabulary learning strategies among undergraduate students in three different competence levels (basic, intermediate, and advanced) who are enrolled in the Vocabulary course at Universitas Indraprasta PGRI in semester III. In this study, determination, social, memory, cognitive, and metacognitive methods were used to learn the language. Schmitt's Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire was used to collect data (VLSQ). Thirty undergraduate students were chosen on the basis of their competence levels. The results of descriptive statistics revealed that most undergraduate students used a medium strategy. The basic level had a mean score of 2.91, the intermediate level of 3.10, and the advanced level of 3.44. It was evident that the more vocabulary acquisition strategies a student used, the greater his or her competency level became. When it came to the most and least frequently utilized strategies by undergraduate students, metacognitive and determination were the most commonly employed techniques across three levels. However, the least frequent strategies of each level were different. Cognitive was slightly used by basic undergraduate students. Memory was the least employed by intermediate undergraduate students, and social was the fewest strategies implemented by advanced undergraduate students. This study revealed that the development of vocabulary learning strategies could increase EFL undergraduate students’ proficiency levels significantly.

Chinese EFL University Students’ Use of Vocabulary Learning Strategies

This study investigated into the types of vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs) employed by EFL university students. The VLSs questionnaire was conducted and the sampling in this study was 71 English major students with higher and lower educational levels in a Chinese university. The study discovered that the determination and cognitive strategies were frequently employed by students. They most frequently used written and visual repetition, rehearsed on words’ spellings and sounds, had meaning-oriented note-taking, memorised the fixed phrases and sentences, used bilingual dictionaries, guessed words’ meanings and understood words through Chinese equivalents. Students also learned to tell themselves to feel less stressed when learning vocabulary. Students mainly focused on getting words’ meanings and the mechanical strategies they used were associated with understanding. By contrast, social/affective and metacognitive strategies were the least frequently used. Also, memory strategies such as words’ grammatical forms and word association, were less often employed. Students with a higher educational level more often associated words and noticed their vocabulary learning progresses. Therefore, learning maturity had impact on students’ choices of VLSs. In these cases, it is suggested that students use more types of VLSs such as memory and metacognitive strategies. English teachers are suggested to have strategy instructions and guide students to learn vocabulary through group discussions in classes. Additionally, studying vocabulary incidentally through both intensive and extensive reading is recommended to be taken into consideration.

A Comparative Study of English Vocabulary Learning Strategies Used by Iranian Bilinguals and Monolinguals

The present study is an attempt to explore English vocabulary learning strategies employed by Iranian EFL undergraduate Baluch-Persian bilingual and Persian monolingual students in the University of Sistan and Baluchestan. The study utilized a between-groups research design. The participants of this study were 33 bilingual (Baluch-Persian) and 34 monolingual (Persian) students with an intermediate level of English. Their age ranged from 19 to 24 and. In order to collect the data, adapted version of Schmitt’s (1997) Vocabulary Learning Strategy Questionnaire (VLSQ) with a five-point Likert scale was administrated. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and independent samples t-test. The results indicated that EFL students use a wide range of vocabulary learning strategies. Furthermore, the findings revealed that there was no statistically significant difference between bilinguals and monolinguals regarding English VLSs. Finally, the paper ends up with a number of pedagogical implications for English teachers.

Vocabulary Learning Strategies of Italian-Turkish Bilingual Students: Impact of Simultaneous and Sequential Acquisition

Summary Vocabulary learning strategy domain has been one of the areas of research in the language learning strategy field. Bilinguals use different language and vocabulary learning strategies than monolinguals (Hong-Nam & Leavell, 2007; Jessner, 1999). Even though there are numerous studies that investigate and compare monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual language learning strategy use, no studies have been conducted to compare the vocabulary learning strategy use in simultaneous and sequential bilinguals. This paper addresses this gap by investigating and comparing those strategies reported by Italian-Turkish simultaneous and sequential bilingual high school students with a total number of 103 participants, 34 of which are simultaneous bilinguals and the remaining 69 sequential bilinguals. The Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire (VLSQ) developed by Schmitt (1997) was utilized as the instrument of data collection. We found that simultaneous and sequential bilinguals (a) are medium to high level vocabulary strategy users, (b) report using social strategies the most, (c) do not differ considerably in their choice of vocabulary learning strategy type, but (d) differ substantially in their choices of metacognitive strategy use. The results offer implications for teachers and teacher educators particularly as to how they teach and support bilingual students’ vocabulary learning process in monolingual contexts.

The Effect of Strategy Training on Vocabulary Learning of EFL University Students

This study investigated the effect of training in five vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) on the vocabulary learning of EFL university students. The five vocabulary learning strategies were ‘Dictionary Work’, ‘Word Cards’, ‘Semantic Mapping’, ‘Word Parts’, and ‘Guessing from Context’. Forty-eight first year university students, in both the control group (24 students receiving English language courses) and the experimental group (24 students receiving English language courses besides VLS training) belonging to similar proficiency and vocabulary size levels, participated in the study. Data were collected utilizing two research instruments namely a vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire, pre-and post-tests of vocabulary learning ability. The vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire was used to elicit what types of vocabulary learning strategies the subjects employed while they learned and memorized the vocabulary taught independently outside and inside the class. The pre-test was employed to determine pre-existing knowledge of the participants. The posttest was administered to identify the impact of vocabulary learning strategy instruction on the students’ vocabulary knowledge. Descriptive statistics and t-test showed that after introducing vocabulary learning strategies training (VLST) in class, subjects from the experimental group used more VLS and significantly outperformed subjects of the control group in their ability to learn new words.

A descriptive study on ESL learners’ vocabulary knowledge through cognitive and metacognitive strategies

The present research was carried out to study the cognitive and metacognitive vocabulary learning strategies of 36 ESL learners’. Schmitt’s Vocabulary Learning Strategies questionnaire was used to conduct the study. The study revealed the subsequent array of cognitive and metacognitive strategies employed by ESL learners. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were also conducted with 10 ESL learners’ who completed the questionnaire to get more reliable information about learners’ strategies with vocabulary learning. The findings indicated that ‘Using English Language Media’, ‘Verbal repetition’, ‘Take notes in class’ were the most popular strategies, whereas ‘Skip or pass new word’ and ‘Put English labels on physical objects’ were least used. The results of this paper provide many implications for English language teaching. Detailed explanations of the participants’ cognitive and metacognitive strategies were given in the discussion.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the most or the least preferred vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) by Turkish EFL learners and to examine the relationship between morphological mastery and VLS. The participants of the study consist of 102 Translation and Interpreting department students at a state university in Turkey. The measurement tools used in the study are Vocabulary Size Test (VST) (Nation, 2001) and Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire (VLSQ) (Gu, 2018). Before the questionnaire, VST was administered to the students to determine the vocabulary size levels of them. After the test, students were asked to answer the 5-point Likert type VLSQ. The results of the study were analyzed by SPSS programme using one-way ANOVA. According to the results, the most commonly used strategies by Turkish EFL learners in vocabulary learning are guessing and dictionary strategies. The least frequently used strategies are the use of word lists and visual repetition strategies in the rehearsal category. The results obtained from students who are classified as low, medium and high-level vocabulary size, show that the most frequently used strategies of high level students are selective attention, guessing strategies, dictionary strategies, notebook usage and note-taking (deciding what information goes into notes). In addition, while the vast majority of students think that it is necessary to learn words through use, they believe that memorization does not play an important role in vocabulary learning. This study tends to help English learners who have difficulty in choosing vocabulary learning strategies to get morphological mastery and to lead EFL teachers by showing the advantages of using different strategies for students.

VOCABULARY LEARNING STRATEGIES EMPLOYED BY POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS OF MATARAM UNIVERSITY IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2014/2015

Vocabulary is crucial to language learning in which lack vocabulary knowledge will make learner difficult to learn the language. Vocabulary knowledge is affected by the vocabulary learning strategies. The purpose of the present study was to identify the vocabulary learning strategies employed by postgraduate students and also try to explore the most and least vocabulary strategy used by Mataram university postgraduate students. The sample of this study was 40 postgraduate students of English department in FKIP Mataram University in academic year 2014/2015. Vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire was used in this study to identify students’ frequency of vocabulary learning strategies use. The result of the study showed that the research subjects used the vocabulary learning strategies in all five categories. The memory strategies (37.80) were the most frequently strategies by all subjects. Meanwhile determination strategies (mean=19.43) were determined as the second frequently used strategies followed by cognitive (mean=15.23), metacognitive (mean=13,26). The social strategies were determined as the least used strategies by all students with mean score of 11.00. In specific, looking at each item of category, the most vocabulary learning strategy used by postgraduate students was guessing from context (mean=3.33) which is part of determination category and the least vocabulary learning strategy used by postgraduate students was ask other people to discover the meaning of new vocabulary (mean=1.50)

Understanding the Selection of Vocabulary Learning Strategies: The Impact of the Language Teaching Approach

This paper presents a study on how the selection of vocabulary learning strategies is affected by the kind of instructional programme followed. A total of one hundred thirty-eight secondary-school learners – seventy-two CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and fifty-six mainstream EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners – took part in the study. They were asked to respond a vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire. The data were examined looking into how the use of strategies differed when comparing CLIL and EFL learners. Results permitted to develop two clear learner profiles that were compared. These findings will be discussed in relation to their possible implications for vocabulary development.

DIAGNOSING ESL LEARNERS’ VOCABULARY KNOWLEDGE THROUGH MEMORY STRATEGIES

Purpose of the study: The present study diagnoses the vocabulary knowledge employed by ESL learners’ through memory strategies. Schmiit’s (1990) Taxonomy of Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLS) questionnaire was adopted and administered to 93 ESL learners. In order to get authenticities about the ESL learners’ memory strategies with vocabulary learning, semi-structured interviews were also conducted with 30 participants who completed the questionnaire. The result exposed the subsequent array of memory strategies used by ESL learners from the most frequent to the least frequent strategies, particularly findings revealed that ‘Use new word in sentences’, ‘Study word with a pictorial representation of its Meaning’, ‘Connect word to a personal experience’ are most popular whereas ‘Use scales for gradable adjectives’, ‘Relating word to unrelated items (Peg method)’ were least used memory strategies.
 Methodology: Schmitt’s Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire (VLSQ) (1997) was favored to diagnose the vocabulary knowledge through memory strategies of 93 ESL learners. Initially the responses were collected through Google Forms. Additionally, 30 ESL learners were randomly selected for interviews in accordance to reassure participants’ comprehension of the subject matters.
 Main Findings: The study finds effective result among 93 ESL learners in acquiring vocabulary knowledge while using memory strategies with the assistance of technological modalities. It also listed the most frequent and least frequent use of memory strategies in Schmitt’s Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire (VLSQ) (1997).
 Applications of this study: The present study is conducted in English Language Laboratory, where ESL learners’ can be benefitted and the learners can use these memory strategies while learning a new vocabulary when encountering a word.
 Novelty/Originality of this study: The existing technological modalities will assist the learners to correlate more effectively. Subject and language experts in the field can design the instructional materials and tools to assist ESL learners to improve vocabulary knowledge through memory strategies.

Exploring the Effects of Metacognitive Strategies on Vocabulary Learning of Japanese Junior High School Students

Vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) play a crucial role in L2 vocabulary education. Although it is assumed that metacognitive VLS are effective, few studies have empirically investigated this assumption. This paper, therefore, conducted a study in order to establish a comprehensive taxonomy of metacognitive VLS and explored the relationship between the use of metacognitive VLS and vocabulary knowledge. A vocabulary size test and a VLS questionnaire were administered to 132 Japanese junior high school students. The data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. The results showed a total of 20 metacognitive VLS and categorized them into six. Among the six metacognitive VLS, input seeking was a positive predictor of test scores at any frequency level, while spaced learning, guessing with confidence, and note making varied in effectiveness depending on word frequency. These results suggest it is important to encourage students to learn vocabulary outside the classroom, teach basic affix knowledge, and facilitate students in making vocabulary notebooks.
