Validation of Visual Prostate Symptom Score (VPSS) in Brazilian Sample Population.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Visual Prostate Symptom Score (VPSS), its correlation with the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), and the time required and need for help when completing the instrument. We also aimed to identify variables associated with difficulty completing these instruments. Longitudinal, prospective correlational study. The target population was Brazilian men from different cities within the state of São Paulo with lower urinary tract symptoms followed in urological consultation at a university hospital during October 2017. The sample comprised 59 patients with a mean age of 66.53 years. Reliability of the VPSS was evaluated using a test-retest approach and its convergent validity with the IPSS. Cronbach α coefficient was also calculated. Both questionnaires were self-administered and, in case of difficulty of comprehension, assistance was provided. Mean completion time of the IPSS was 6.56 minutes and for VPSS was 5.02 minutes. The variables skin color and educational level were associated with the difficulty in completing the IPSS and for comprehending meaning of the VPSS pictograms. Internal consistency evaluated using Cronbach α coefficient was 0.74 for IPSS and 0.15 for VPSS, respectively. Test-retest reliability testing revealed that both instruments had a high intraclass correlation index (>0.75). There was a significant correlation between the health-related quality of life (QoL) scores of the 2 instruments (0.71, P = .0001) and between the total score of each instrument with its corresponding QoL score. Although time for response of the VPSS was shorter and it demonstrated good test-retest reliability, it more frequently required help to answer. The VPSS showed low internal consistency and low correlation with the IPSS (except for the QoL item).

Study of correlation between Visual Prostate Symptom Score and International Prostate Symptom Score in men with lower urinary tract symptoms with reference to Uroflowmetry parameters in Indian population.

International prostate symptom score (IPSS) is a complex questionnaire method for objective assessment of Lower urinary tract symptoms. So, there is a need to develop a simple and easy scoring system that could be easily used for illiterates and older aged patients. It was a prospective observational study with 202 participants, conducted at the department of urology of a tertiary care hospital in eastern India. The patients more than 50 years of age, attending urology OPD with Lower urinary tract symptoms were included in the study. Printed IPSS and VPSS questionnaires were given to the patient to answer. Eighty-two percent (82%) of the higher education group and 97% of the lower education group needed assistance to answer IPSS questionnaires while 18% of the higher education group and 44% of the lower education group needed assistance to answer VPSS questionnaires. Sixty-four (64%) of patients in our study belong to the high education level while 36% of patients belong to the low education group. The mean age was 60.1 years. The mean IPSS and VPSS were 19 and 11 respectively. The mean PSA was 1.5 ng/ml. The time taken to fill VPSS questionnaire was much less than IPSS questionnaires. All the patients felt that VPSS was easier. Statistically significant (p-value < 0.05) correlation was found between total IPSS and total VPSS, Q2 IPSS and Q1 VPSS, Q7 IPSS and Q2 VPSS, Q5 IPSS and Q3 VPSS, and IPSS Qol and VPSS Qol. A negative correlation was found between Q3 VPSS and Qmax, and Q5 IPSS and Qmax. VPSS can be used as an alternative tool to IPSS to assess LUTS, which uses pictograms instead of questionnaires, even in patients with limited education.

Comparison of three questionnaire forms used in the diagnosis of lower urinary tract symptoms: A prospective study.

Questionnaire forms (QFs) are used in the evaluation of all patients presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs). Our study aims to investigate the compatibility of the three QFs with each otherand to investigate the relationship between education level and complete completion of these forms. A total of 224 patients between February 2018 and February 2019 were included. The patients were divided into 3 groups as primary, intermediate, and advanced according to their education level and the patients who gave incomplete answers to the questions were determined. The mean age of the patients was 61.0±7.57(45-85), International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) value was 16.2±8.3(1-35), the international incontinence form-male lower urinary tract symptoms (ICIQ-MLUTS) value was 16.5±7.9(0-38), the visual prostate symptom score (VPSS) value was 9.9±3.0(3-16). There was a significant correlation between the three QFs (P<0.05). The correlation between IPSS and ICIQ-MLUTS was strong (r=0.745). The incomplete response rate was 32.1% (n=72) in ICIQ-MLUTS, 16.5% (n=37) in VPSS, and 10.7% (n=24) in IPSS (P<0.05). The incomplete response rate was not affected by education. The rate of patients who could be questioned with ICIQ-MLUTS but not with the other two QFs varied between 12.9% and 85.2%, depending on the symptoms. Each QF has its advantages and disadvantages. The strong correlation between IPSS and ICIQ-MLUTS found in our study indicates that these tools can be used interchangeably in daily clinical practice. ICIQ-MLUTS can evaluate symptoms that are not present in other QFs. In the evaluation of illiterate patients, VPSS should be used without any alternative.

How Do Patients Understand Questions about Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms? A Qualitative Study of Problems in Completing Urological Questionnaires.

Lower urinary tract symptoms are common complaints in ageing people. For a urological evaluation of such complaints in men, the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) is used worldwide. Previous quantitative studies have revealed serious problems in completing this questionnaire. In order to gain insight into the nature and causes of these problems, we conducted a qualitative study. Not only the purely verbal IPSS was studied but also two alternatives, including pictograms: the Visual Prostate Symptom Score (VPSS) and the Score Visuel Prostatique en Image (SVPI). Men aged 40 years and over with an inadequate level of health literacy (IHL; n = 18) or an adequate level of health literacy (AHL; n = 47) participated. Each participant filled out one of the three questionnaires while thinking aloud. The analysis of their utterances revealed problems in both health literacy groups with form-filling tasks and subtasks for all three questionnaires. Most noticeable were the problems with the IPSS; the terminology and layout of this form led to difficulties. In the VPSS and SVPI, the pictograms sometimes raised problems. As in previous research on form-filling behavior, an overestimation by form designers of form fillers’ knowledge and skills seems to be an important explanation for the problems observed.

Simplified Chinese version of the international prostate symptom score and the benign prostatic hyperplasia impact index: cross-cultural adaptation, reliability, and validity for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

BackgroundThe aim of this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the international prostate symptom score (IPSS) and benign prostatic hyperplasia impact index (BII) into simplified Chinese for mainland Chinese patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).MethodsThe original English IPSS and BII were translated into simplified Chinese versions based on cross-cultural adaptation guidelines. Internal consistency was evaluated with Cronbach’s α, then test-retest reliability with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) in stable patients. The validity of these two adaptations was tested by the correlation between the IPSS and BII with visual prostate symptom score (VPSS) and 36 items Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). The floor and ceiling effects were calculated by the proportion of participants who obtained the highest and lowest possible score.ResultsA total of 105 native Chinese-speaking patients with BPH were enrolled. Cronbach’s α was over 0.75 for the simplified Chinese IPSS (IPSS 0.815; IPSS-symptom 0.782) and 0.709 for the simplified Chinese BII, indicating acceptable internal consistency. The ICCs for the test-retest reliability were over 0.75 (IPSS, r = 0.836; IPSS-symptom, r = 0.801; IPSS-quality of life, r = 0.794; BII, r = 0.758), indicating excellent test-retest reliability. There were very good positive correlations between IPSS and BII (r = 0.605), as well as VPSS (r = 0.634), and very good or good negative correlations between IPSS-Qol and SF-36 physical functioning (r = −0.621), and vitality (r = −0.659), and between BII and SF-36 physical functioning (r = −0.421). No floor or ceiling effect was detected in the simplified Chinese IPSS and BII.ConclusionsThis study indicates that the simplified Chinese IPSS and BII are reliable and valid measurements of the symptom and quality of life among Chinese patients with BPH, which is likely to be widely used in this population.

A considerable decrease in morbidity and mortality from BOO has been achieved in regions of the world with higher income through improvements in surgical and medical management. Barriers to clinical assessment and education about BOO have included literacy and regional language variations.Epidemiological studies demonstrating the incidence and severity of BOO in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC’s) are based on estimates. AIM: to 1) to conduct a community-based quantitative assessment of the burden of BOO in a rural African community, 2) further validate the Visual Prostate Symptom Score (VPSS) against the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). METHODS: We used two recruitment strategies: radio phone-in talk shows to promote clinic attendance, and community outreach travel to survey patients in rural areas. The VPSS was compared to the IPSS: men completed the VPSS and IPSS without assistance, then the VPSS and IPSS with assistance in their native language. They described their understanding of pictograph meaning (face validity), related usefulness of each pictogram, and provided feedback to improve content validity. RESULTS: A cross-sectional survey in rural Uganda comparing the burden of disease due to LUTS in men > 50 years of age living in the community (N = 238) with a second cohort seeking treatment at a medical clinic (N = 177). Based on the IPSS moderate and severe symptoms were seen in 31% and 12% for those in the community versus 55 and 30% seeking clinic attention respectively (p<0.05). In N=136 completing the IPSS VPSS validation 90% had inherent recognition of the weak stream pictograph and only 42% for the nocturia images. CONCLUSIONS: Our data showed that the frequency and negative impact of LUTS are high in the community. Whilst the drugs recommended were available at local clinics, educational barriers, and limited knowledge about the effectiveness of treatment are greater than previously recognized. Health education about BOO was welcomed at workshops to debrief participants. General content validity of the VPSS was high but the nocturia pictograph could be further developed including the size of images due to reduced visual health in the population. Evaluating the Lower Urinary Tract Syndrome with a Telemedicine Application: An Exploration of the Electronic Audiovisual Prostate Symptom Score.

BackgroundThe Visual Prostate Symptom Score (VPSS) is used for the assessment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). It is usually administered by general practitioners (GPs), but in these cases, outcomes do not seem to be reflecting the real conditions of a patient well, with consequent risks of misestimations and misinterpretations. We developed an electronic audiovisual version of VPSS (EPSS), a new symptom scale based on a telemedicine mobile light-based app. The aim of this study is to test and evaluate its reliability.MethodsWe enrolled male patients aged between 50 and 80 years across 24 community-based healthcare facilities in Guangzhou, China. Patients were asked to complete the Chinese version of VPSS and EPSS before consultation with the urology specialists. Patients were divided into two groups based on age. First, we analyzed the rate of full understanding of EPSS using a chi-square test. Then, we analyzed the difference between each score of EPSS, VPSS, and outcomes measured by specialists, used as the reference score (RS). Finally, the outcomes were analyzed with the Spearman test and Bartlett test separately.ResultsSeventy-nine male patients were included (mean age 70.42 years). Patients were divided into two groups: group 1 (>70 years, n = 40) and group 2 (<70 years, n = 39). The full-understanding rates in groups 1 and 2 were 50% and 64.1%, respectively. No significant differences were noted between groups (p = 0.206). A t-test was presented between each question of VPSS, EPSS, and RS. All questions did not display significant differences (p > 0.05); total scores from the three scales had no significant differences in the evaluation of LUTS. We further explored the variations of choices made by patients in different scales. Spearman’s test among VPSS, EPSS, and RS showed positive correlations, and coefficients of the total score were 0.92, 0.91, and 0.93 (p < 0.05).ConclusionEPSS can be easily used in a significant number of patients and showed correlation with the VPSS and RS. Moreover, certain items resulted in better performance than VPSS. The results showed that EPSS could be a valuable option for both patients and GPs monitoring LUTS and particularly helpful when teleconsultations are considered, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Visual prostate symptom score (VPSS). Is it an effective alternative for the assessment of lower urinary tract symptoms? Experience in a reference center in southeastern Mexico

The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) assesses lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). In our Department, we receive Mayan-speaking patients with low educational levels, which makes it difficult for them to understand the questionnaire. The visual prostate symptom score (VPSS) overcomes these barriers.&#x0D; Objectives: To correlate the VPSS score with the IPSS one, in patients with LUTS who attend the Urology Department of the Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad, to determine the prevalence of patients requiring assistance in answering both instruments. The correlation between the IPSS and VPSS and the Qmax of these patients will be evaluated.&#x0D; Material and methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was performed in men of 40 years of age or older with LUTS, between January 2019 to January 2020. Uroflowmetry was performed and the VPSS and IPSS were applied to them, identifying those who required help to answer the questions. Pearson or Spearman correlation tests were performed according to the distribution of the data, evaluated using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Categorical variables were compared using X2 or Fischer's test.&#x0D; Results: Eighty-one men with LUTS were included. The mean age was 62.89+9.52. A significant correlation was found between total VPSS and total IPSS (r=0.708, p&lt;0.001). 83.8% (n=67) of patients were able to answer the IPSS, and 98.8% (n=79) were able to answer the VPSS. The percentage of patients who required help to solve the IPSS was 43.5% (n=34) and the VPSS was 25% (n=20). No significant correlations were found between VPSS and Qmax (r=-.123, p=0.277), and IPSS and Qmax (r=-0.085, p=0.456).&#x0D; Conclusions: The VPSS is a useful instrument in the assessment of LUTS, as it correlates with the IPSS. It also overcomes the barriers of language and educational level. However, it overestimates the severity of the symptoms referred by the patient. Then, studies are needed to improve this instrument.

Luts-V: A new simplified score for assessing lower urinary tract symptoms in men.

ABSTRACTObjectives:Develop and validate a new and simplified score for evaluating the lower urinary tract symptoms in men.Materials and methods:We modified the existing visual prostate symptom score, including changes in the images, sequence, and new alternatives, resulting in a new visual score (LUTS visual score-LUTS-V). For the validation of the new tool, we used the International Prostatic Symptom Score as the gold-standard and the new LUTS-V to 306 men. The total IPSS score and the total LUTS-V score of each subject were evaluated to determine the agreement between the two instruments. ROC curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and best cut-off of LUTS-V. Sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic odds ratios were used to describe the diagnostic properties.Results:The mean age of the participants was 59 [52-87] years. There was a significant correlation between LUTS-V and IPSS. (r=0.72 (p <0.0001). The Bland-Altman analyzes demonstrate good agreement between the two questionnaires (bias=5.6%). LUTS-V demonstrated excellent diagnostic accuracy in detecting the most serious cases with an area under the ROC curve of 83% [78-87%] 95% CI. p <0.001). LUTS-V >4 was the best threshold, with a sensitivity of 74% and specificity of 78%.Conclusions:LUTS-V is a simple, self-administered tool with a significant discriminatory power to identify subjects with moderate to severe LUTS and may represent a useful instrument for the diagnosis and follow-up of men with urinary symptoms.

¿Es el Visual Prostate Symptom Score (VPSS) tan útil como el International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) en la evaluación de los pacientes con síntomas de tracto urinario inferior? Una comparación prospectiva de los 2 cuestionarios.

Introducción: Los síntomas del tracto urinario inferior (STUI) son uno de los principales motivos de consulta en urología. El International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) es una herramienta útil en la valoración de los STUI pero en la práctica clínica diaria no siempre resulta fácil para todos los pacientes su cumplimentación.&#x0D; &#x0D; Objetivo: Comprobar si existe una correlación adecuada entre el Visual Prostate Symptom Score (VPSS) y el IPSS en el estudio de los pacientes con STUI y evaluar las diferencias en cuanto a la necesidad de ayuda y el tiempo requerido para su autocumplimentación.&#x0D; &#x0D; Material y métodos: Se realizó un estudio prospectivo, multicéntrico, desde junio de 2019 a enero de 2020. Se entregaron ambos cuestionarios a los pacientes para su autocumplimentación en la consulta de Urología. Posteriormente, en la misma consulta se realizó una flujometría y una ecografía prostática. Se analizaron las variables: edad, puntuación del IPSS, puntuación del VPSS, necesidad de ayuda para cumplimentar los cuestionarios, tiempo empleado, flujo máximo (Qmáx), volumen prostático y nivel de estudios. Para el análisis estadístico se utilizó el coeficiente de correlación de Spearman.&#x0D; &#x0D; Resultados: Se recogieron un total de 101 pacientes con STUI. La media de edad fue de 68’53 años. El flujo máximo fue de 9.2 ml/s de media y el volumen prostático de 50’77 cc de media. El nivel de estudios fue: estudios primarios en el 49’5% de pacientes, secundarios el 20’8%, formación profesional el 13’8% y universitarios el 7’9%. Se observó una correlación negativa entre la puntuación total del IPSS y el VPPS con el Qmáx. El tiempo requerido y la necesidad de ayuda fueron mayores para la cumplimentación del IPPS que para el VPSS, siendo estas diferencias estadísticamente significativas. Los pacientes con estudios primarios precisaron menor tiempo y ayuda para completar el VPPS.&#x0D; &#x0D; Conclusiones: El VPSS se correlaciona con el IPSS, con la ventaja de ser más fácil y rápido de completar por los pacientes.

Introduction: The symptoms of the lower urinary tract (LUTS) are one of the main reasons for consultation in urology. The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) is a useful tool in the assessment of LUTS, but in daily clinical practice it is not always easy for all patients to complete it.&#x0D; &#x0D; Objective: To check if there is an adequate correlation between the Visual Prostate Symptom Score (VPSS) and the IPSS in the diagnosis of patients with LUTS and to evaluate the differences regarding the need for help and the time required for self-completion of both questionnaires.&#x0D; &#x0D; Material and methods: A prospective, multicenter study was conducted from June 2019 to January 2020. Both questionnaires were delivered to patients for self-completion in the Urology clinic. Later, in the same clinic, flowmetry and prostate ultrasound were performed. Variables were analyzed: age, IPSS score, VPSS score, need for help completing the questionnaires, time spent, maximum flow (Qmax), prostate volume and educational level. Spearman's correlation coefficient was used for statistical analysis.&#x0D; &#x0D; Results: A total of 101 patients with LUTS were collected. The mean age was 68'53 years. The maximum flow was 9.2 ml/s on average and the prostatic volume was 50.77 cc on average. The level of studies was: primary studies in 49'5% of patients, secondary 20'8%, vocational training 13'8% and university studies 7'9%. A negative correlation was observed between the total IPSS score and the VPPS with the Qmax. The time required and the need for help were greater for completing the IPPS than for the VPSS, these differences being statistically significant. Patients with primary studies required less time and help to complete the VPPS.&#x0D; &#x0D; Conclusions: VPSS is correlated with IPSS, with the advantage of being easier and faster to complete by patients.

Efficacy of cystone versus tamsulosin in treatment of stent-related lower urinary tract symptoms

Objective: Double-J stent is a common tool used in urological procedures that is inserted for 2–6 weeks, but it may induce abdominal and flank pain, incontinence and irritative urinary symptoms. Alleviation of such symptoms would be useful to improve the patients’ quality of life. Accordingly, in this study, the efficacy of cystone versus tamsulosin in the treatment of double-J stent-related lower urinary tract symptoms was determined. Materials and methods: In this randomised clinical trial, 128 patients who required double-J stent insertion after transureteral lithotripsy during 2018–2019 were enrolled. They were randomly assigned to receive either cystone, tamsulosin, both, or placebo. The international prostate symptom score and visual analogue score data were recorded at baseline, after 2 and 4 weeks across the groups. Results: The international prostate symptom score and visual analogue score factors were statistically different across the case groups receiving cystone, tamsulosin and both drugs versus placebo ( P=0.001). Two weeks after drug administration, the visual analogue score and international prostate symptom score were not statistically different in the tamsulosin, cystone and dual therapy groups; however, after 4 weeks the cystone group had the lowest symptoms. Conclusion: Both tamsulosin and cystone are efficient drugs which would relieve stent-related lower urinary tract symptoms. The administration of cystone with or without tamsulosin for 4 weeks may have the best result in reducing the visual analogue score and international prostate symptom score. Correlation evaluation of the international prostate symptom score (IPSS), visual prostate symptom score (VPSS), and modified visual prostate symptom score (mVPSS) in Thai males with benign prostatic hyperplasia

Objective: To study the correlation between the modified visual prostate symptom score (mVPSS), the visual prostate symptom score (VPSS) and the international prostate symptom score (IPSS) in Thai males who were diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Material and Method: One hundred and ten Thai males who were diagnosed with BPH and LUTS by urologists were enrolled onto the study between 1st March and 31st July 2019. They were divided into 2 different groups by simple random sampling. The first group was requested to complete the A questionnaire which was composed of IPSS and VPSS and the second group was assigned to finish the B questionnaire which consisted of IPSS and mVPSS. Both groups had to complete their personal data, including age, education level, monthly income, and duration of treatment for BPH, and they also were classified as high or low educated groups. The correlations between the scores of mVPSS, VPSS, and IPSS in the high or low educated groups were assessed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient with IBM SPSS statistics 22.0. Results: There were statistically significant correlations between mVPSS, VPSS, and IPSS (P&lt;0.05) in total and individual scores, which consisted of quality of life, voiding symptom score, storage symptom score, frequency score and nocturia score. According to this study, it was found that the mVPSS and VPSS questionnaires took less time to complete and were easier than the IPSS. However, in high-educated patients, there was no statistically significant rate to complete the mVPSS, VPSS and IPSS questionnaire by themselves. In addition, this study showed a strong positive correlation between the IPSS versus mVPSS and VPSS in the high-educated groups (r=0.935 and r=0.898, respectively). In contrast, in the low-educated patient group, there was no statistically significant correlation between the VPSS and IPSS questionnaires in frequency score. However, this study found a positive correlation of frequency score between the mVPSS and IPSS questionnaires in all educated groups. Moreover, most patients felt that the mVPSS and VPSS questionnaires were easier to understand and complete than the IPSS questionnaire. Conclusion: The mVPSS shows a statistically significant correlation to the IPSS standard questionnaire, which means that the IPSS can be replaced by the mVPSS in order to evaluate Thai males with BPH and LUTS, because the mVPSS can be used with all educated groups and the patients are able to understand and complete the questionnaire more quickly. For these reasons, the mVPSS is an excellent choice to replace the VPSS and IPSS, which still have many limitations with varieties of patients.

Comparison of a Visual Prostate Symptom Score and International Prostate Symptom Score: A Prospective Multicenter Study and Literature Review

To evaluate the correlation between Visual Prostate Symptom Score (VPSS) and the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and uroflowmetry parameters in men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) with literature review. Patients were pooled from 4 different urology clinics in Turkey and divided into 3 groups according to their educational level. The scores of IPSS and the VPSS questionnaire, assistance requirement, and completion time of the questionnaires were recorded. Maximum flow rate (Qmax) and average flow rate (Qave) were determined with uroflowmetry test and the results are recorded. A total of 342 patients were evaluated (group 1, n=168; group 2, n=108; group 3, n =66). Median age of all groups was 61 (40-89). There was a significantly higher rate of the completion of VPSS than IPSS without assistance in total (P < .001). Educational level was not found as an independent factor with assistance requirement to complete VPSS while university educational level was found as an independent factor to complete IPSS (odds ratio=9.735, P < .001).There was a significantly lower completion time for VPSS in all groups when compared to IPSS (P < .001 for all groups). Significant positive correlations were found between VPSS and IPSS questions (P < .001). There were significant negative correlations between total score and weak stream question of VPSS and Qmax and Qave, separately (P < .001). VPSS can be more practical than IPSS to evaluate LUTS in men with low educational levels and/or in large populations. Some modifications are needed to increase the availability of VPSS.

Can new, improvised Visual Prostate Symptom Score replace the International Prostate Symptom Score? Indian perspective.

Introduction:Visual Prostate Symptom Score (VPSS) was introduced to overcome the drawbacks of the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). However, this score also has potential for improvement.Materials and Methods:The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of VPSS in patients with benign enlarged prostate (BEP) after uroflowmetric validation of the stream component. The secondary objective was to improve VPSS by adding a new severity grading and to assess if the “new upgraded VPSS” can replace IPSS in terms of ease of completion without assistance and the time taken.Results:Of 115 patients, 42.60% of them were of the age group between 61–70 years; mean ± standard deviation age was 64.75 years ± 8.042 (range 48–90 years). Nineteen (16.52%) patients, who had education level ≥10th grade completed IPSS without assistance. One hundred and eight (93.91%) patients completed VPSS without assistance (P = 0.000). None of those (0/6) with no formal education (but able to read and write) could complete the IPSS without assistance, whereas 66.67% completed the VPSS without assistance. Six minutes and two minutes was the average time taken to complete IPSS (4–10 min) and VPSS (1–3 min), respectively. Responses to different variables of VPSS were statistically significant (P < 0.001) compared to the IPSS. Correlation between the severity grading of the two scores was statistically significant (P < 0.001), with a statistically significant positive correlation between VPSS and IPSS (r = +0.582, P < 0.001). The new severity grading system developed on par with the IPSS, improvising the existing VPSS, showed statistically significant positive correlation to the IPSS (r = +0.587, P < 0.001).Conclusions:VPSS correlated well with IPSS. The “new improvised VPSS” developed by incorporating severity grading is a potential tool that can replace IPSS by overcoming its limitations.

Сравнение международного индекса симптомов при заболеваниях предстательной железы и визуальной шкалы симптомов заболеваний предстательной железы у пациентов в Турции

Benign prostate hyperplasia is one of the most common disease in elderly men. The patients usually present lower urinary tract symptoms including frequency, urgency, nocturia and interittancy. The prostate symptom scores are usually used for daily urology practice. We aimed to compare the International Prostate Symptom Score and Visual Prostate Symptom Score in Turkish patients. s. The study protocol was conducted from from February to August 2017. The patients presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms over the age of 45 years were included. The age, prostate specific antigen level, education level and symtom scores were recorded. The patients with history of neurological disease, prostatic surgery, radiotherapy and any malignancy were excluded. There were 81 patients in the current study. The mean age and PSA level was 58.86+/-7.39 years and 1,94+/-1,77 ng/ml. Most of the patients (54.32%) had primary level of education and the patients who were graduated from university (19.75%) followed. The secondary and high school level was 12.34% and 13.58% respectively. The fully complete rate of the symptom scores 37% for IPSS and 9.8% for VPSS and 81% for CSS (p<0.05). In the patients with fully complete; there was no significant difference for patients education level and age. The IPSS and VPSS are established symtom scores for patients with benign prostate hyperplasia. The difficulties to understand and translate problems of these questionnaires; new, mother language originated symptom score is needed for Turkish patients.

BackgroundThe complexity of International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) as an objective questionnaire for lower urinary tract symptoms might be overcome with alternative questionnaire such as the Visual Prostate Symptom Score (VPSS) which uses pictograms instead of questions to illustrate some of the questions addressed in IPSS.MethodsMale patients older than 45 years with lower urinary tract symptoms were evaluated with Indonesian version of the IPSS and VPSS, for uroflowmetry parameters using a transabdominal ultrasound. Appropriate statistical analysis was used.ResultsOf all participants, 24.2% and 11.1% require assistance when answering IPSS and VPSS questionnaires, respectively. The mean age, IPSS total score, VPSS total score, Qmax, voided volume, and postvoid residual volume were 67.4 ± 8.9 years, 13.4 ± 7.8, 10.8 ± 2.7, 13.6 ± 8.6 mL/sec, 248 ± 136 mL, and 54.9 ± 68.3 mL, respectively. Total IPSS, IPSS quality of life (QoL), IPSS question (Q) 2, IPSS Q7, and IPSS Q5 were significantly correlated with total VPSS, VPSS QoL, VPSS Q1, VPSS Q2, and VPSS Q3 [correlation coefficient (r) P value: 0.57, <0.001; 0.76, <0.001; 0.39, <0.001; 0.72, <0.001; 0.50, <0.001, respectively]. VPSS Q3 was significantly correlated with Qmax (r, P value: −0.26, <0.001). There was a significant relationship between the level of education and the ability to complete IPSS questionnaire (P < 0.001). There was no significant relationship between the level of education and the ability to complete VPSS questionnaire (P = 0.649).ConclusionThe VPSS was significantly correlated with IPSS and Qmax. The novel questionnaire proved useful as an alternative tool for IPSS for assessing men with lower urinary tract symptoms, especially for those with lower level of education.
