Effectiveness of Kinesthetic Game-Based Training System in Children With Visual-Perceptual Dysfunction

Visual perceptual dysfunctions were common in children with developmental delays, and have severe adverse impacts on children’s daily activities. Recent studies have shown that technologies such as virtual reality and imaging can provide a motivating and engaging tool for remediating visual perceptual dysfunctions. This study was aimed to present the work we were conducting in experimenting with augmented reality (AR) for visual perceptual rehabilitation in children with developmental delay. Sixty participants (mean age = 7.96 ± 1.4) were equally divided into an experimental group trained with proposed KBTS (KBTS group) and a control group trained using traditional visual perceptual training (TVPT group). Each group completed an 8-week training program (two 30-minute sessions per week). Visual perceptual assessments (Test of Visual Perceptual Skill- 3rd Edition, Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration- 6th Edition) and functional outcome measures (Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale- Chinese Version, School Function Assessment- Chinese Version) were administered to investigate the effectiveness of the intervention. The KBTS group significantly outperformed the TVPT group in assessments of visual-motor integration, visual perceptual skills, and school functions. The effectiveness of the KBTS was supported by robust effect sizes for the pre- and post-intervention comparisons of visual perceptual and visual motor integrative functions between the KBTS group and the TVPT group. This study suggests that KBTS effectively improves visual-motor integration and overall visual perceptual functions in children with developmental delays. This study has discussed the ideas for incorporating several principles of game scenarios for visual perceptual rehabilitation, and the proposed KBTS still have raised a number of issues requiring further work. Enabling users to perform visual motor integrative tasks in an augmented reality world offers the potential for developing advanced visual perceptual skills which may be more easily transferable to activities of daily living than other techniques. Augmented reality has the potential to achieve entertaining and satisfying outcomes for visual perceptual rehabilitation, and making use of the potential applications of AR technologies should be considered more beneficial for the home-based rehabilitation during the current pandemic situations. Other clinical applications are discussed as well.

Deficits in vision and visual attention associated with motor performance of very preterm/very low birth weight children

AimTo extend understanding of impaired motor functioning of very preterm (VP)/very low birth weight (VLBW) children by investigating its relationship with visual attention, visual and visual-motor functioning. MethodsMotor functioning (Movement Assessment Battery for Children, MABC-2; Manual Dexterity, Aiming & Catching, and Balance component), as well as visual attention (attention network and visual search tests), vision (oculomotor, visual sensory and perceptive functioning), visual-motor integration (Beery Visual Motor Integration), and neurological status (Touwen examination) were comprehensively assessed in a sample of 106 5.5-year-old VP/VLBW children. Stepwise linear regression analyses were conducted to investigate multivariate associations between deficits in visual attention, oculomotor, visual sensory, perceptive and visual-motor integration functioning, abnormal neurological status, neonatal risk factors, and MABC-2 scores. ResultsAbnormal MABC-2 Total or component scores occurred in 23–36% of VP/VLBW children. Visual and visual-motor functioning accounted for 9–11% of variance in MABC-2 Total, Manual Dexterity and Balance scores. Visual perceptive deficits only were associated with Aiming & Catching. Abnormal neurological status accounted for an additional 19–30% of variance in MABC-2 Total, Manual Dexterity and Balance scores, and 5% of variance in Aiming & Catching, and neonatal risk factors for 3–6% of variance in MABC-2 Total, Manual Dexterity and Balance scores. ConclusionMotor functioning is weakly associated with visual and visual-motor integration deficits and moderately associated with abnormal neurological status, indicating that motor performance reflects long term vulnerability following very preterm birth, and that visual deficits are of minor importance in understanding motor functioning of VP/VLBW children.

Neonatal Pain and Infection Relate to Smaller Cerebellum in Very Preterm Children at School Age

To examine whether specific neonatal factors differentially influence cerebellar subregional volumes and to investigate relationships between subregional volumes and outcomes in very preterm children at 7 years of age. Fifty-six children born very preterm (24-32 weeks gestational age) followed longitudinally from birth underwent 3-dimensional T(1)-weighted neuroimaging at median age 7.6 years. Children with severe brain injury were excluded. Cerebellar subregions were automatically segmented using the multiple automatically generated templates algorithm. The relation between cerebellum subregional volumes (adjusted for total brain volume and sex) and neonatal clinical factors were examined using constrained principal component analysis. Cognitive and visual-motor integration functions in relation to cerebellar volumes were also investigated. Higher neonatal procedural pain and infection, as well as other clinical factors, were differentially associated with reduced cerebellar volumes in specific subregions. After adjusting for clinical risk factors, neonatal procedural pain was distinctively associated with smaller volumes bilaterally in the posterior VIIIA and VIIIB lobules. Specific smaller cerebellar subregional volumes were related to poorer cognition and motor/visual integration. In very preterm children, exposure to painful procedures, as well as additional neonatal risk factors such as infection, were associated with reduced cerebellar volumes in specific subregions and poorer outcomes at school age.

Visual-motor integration functioning in a South African middle childhood sample

Visual-motor integration functioning has been identified as playing an integral role in different aspects of a child's development. Sensory-motor development is not only foundational to the physical maturation process, but is also imperative for progress with formal learning activities. Deficits in visual-motor integration have been identified as precursors of later learning disabilities and other neurological conditions. The primary aim of this study was to determine the status of visual-motor integration functioning of a group of learners from a disadvantaged peri-urban South African community. Visual-motor integration functioning was assessed using the Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (VMI) and the Goodenough-Harris Drawing Test (GHD). Three hundred and thirty-nine learners in grades 1–4 were assessed and results for the group relative to gender, chronological age and socioeconomic status are reported. For the group, the mean test age fell 16 months below the mean chronological age on the VMI. The mean GHD score for the group was about a half a standard deviation below the GHD's test norm. At school entry level, visual-motor integration was more than one standard deviation below the mean. Compared to female learners, male learners achieved significantly higher scores on the test age score of the VMI (mean difference = 8.69 months), and the intelligence coefficient score of the GHD (mean difference = 4.68). Scores on both measures increased as a function of socioeconomic status. The VMI and GHD scores were significantly correlated (r = 0.45; P < 0.01) suggesting that visual-motor integration is integral to intellectual functioning.

Extremely low-birth-weight infants less than 901 g: development and behaviour after 4 years of life.

In a long-term, prospective, control study, 20 extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants with birth weights between 500 and 900 g (mean 755 (SD 109) g) and gestational ages between 24 and 30 weeks (mean 26.2 (SD 1.8) weeks) were compared with 20 full-term infants at 4 years of age for growth, health, development and quality of life. Four of 20 (20%) ELBW children had major neurological disorders, which were all identified at the 1-year assessment. Seventeen (85%) ELBW children had cognitive development, assessed with the Griffiths mental development scale, within the normal range for age but lower than for full-term controls. The greatest deviations between ELBW and full-term children were found in locomotor and visual-motor integration functions. Eight ELBW children in all (40%), four with recurrent respiratory tract infections after neonatal mechanical ventilation and the four children with major neurological disorders had a higher rate of visits to physicians and hospital admissions. The behavioural symptom interview showed an increased rate of hyperactivity and difficulties in concentrating but not of general behavioural deviations in the ELBW group. Only by school age can all aspects of an extremely early birth be evaluated, but at 4 years of age, 85% of the ELBW children in our group had a good quality of life according to Scheffzek's categorizations.

Expanded Koppitz scoring system of the bender gestalt visual-motor test for adolescents: A pilot study

The current research represented a pilot study to assess the use of the Bender Gestalt Visual-Motor Test with school-age adolescents over 11 years of age. Research regarding the accuracy of the hypothesis that visual-motor integration functioning is normally intact by age 11 was presented. In addition, initial data to extend the Koppitz scoring system of the Bender for ages 11 years, 6 months through 15 years, 11 months was proposed. Mean error scores from the pilot study suggested that visual-motor development is not maturationally complete by age 11 years, 11 months. Additional research focusing on extending the normative sample or developing a new scoring system for adolescents is suggested.
