Pediatric craniopharyngioma with significantly increased intraoperative visual evoked potential amplitude and postoperative visual acuity improvement: a case report.

Visual evoked potential (VEP) is an established modality that allows safe brain tumor resection and preservation of optical function. We herein present a case of a pediatric craniopharyngioma with significant improvement in the VEP amplitude detected during endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery (ETS) and obvious postoperative improvement in visual acuity. A 13-year-old boy presented with visual acuity disturbance in his right eye and was followed up for 5 months by an ophthalmologist. His visual acuity rapidly worsened, and a suprasellar lesion with calcification was found on brain computed tomography. The patient underwent tumor resection during ETS with intraoperative transcranial VEP monitoring. Gross total tumor resection was achieved without injury to the perforators, including the superior hypophyseal arteries. The VEP amplitude was unstable, and significant waves were not detectable before tumor resection; however, a positive wave was detected after removing most of the tumor and exposing the bilateral optic nerves and optic chiasm. Subsequently, negative and positive VEP waves were continuously detected. Visual acuity improved remarkably on postoperative day 10. This case demonstrated both a significant increase in the intraoperative VEP amplitude and rapid postoperative improvement in visual acuity. We surmised that the preoperative rapid worsening of visual dysfunction, intraoperative increase in the VEP amplitude, and significant postoperative improvement in visual acuity were associated with the compression of the optic nerves by the internal carotid artery, anterior cerebral artery, and tumor.

Role of visual evoked potential (VEP) in indirect traumatic optic nerve (ITON) injuries and assessment of the visual outcome

To demonstrate the critical function of Visually Evoked Potential (VEP) in the prompt detection of indirect optic neuropathy. 60 patients suspected of having traumatic optic nerve injury underwent VEP testing in < eight hours of traumatic experience. Baseline visual acuity was revealed to be the most imperative prognosticator of eventual visual outcome. The VEP was instrumental in the primary detection as well as validation of ITON. Additionally, VEP aided in predicting prognosis and follow-up for patients with IITON. Visual recovery is impossible in the absence of recordable VEP waves. The manifestation of orbital fractures wasn't associated with a preliminary or ultimate visual perception decrease. Patients who present < 8 hours following ITON with normal initial visual acuity, VEP alterations, and lower RAPD grades may have a greater chance of recovering final visual perception when treated with an instantaneous high steroid dosage. The above-mentioned prognostic markers in patients with ITON may be beneficial in predicting visual prognosis and determining the need for surgical therapy in patients who experience vision loss following head trauma.

The effect of 4.5 G (LTE Advanced-Pro network) mobile phone radiation on the optic nerve

Purpose Rapid development in mobile phone technologies increase the average mobile phone usage duration. This increase also triggers exposure to radiofrequency radiation (RF), which is a risk factor for the health. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of mobile phone working with LTE-Advanced Pro (4.5 G) mobile network on the optic nerve, which is responsible for the transmission of visual information. Material and methods Thirty-two rats divided into two groups as control (no RF, sham exposure) and experimental (RF exposure using a mobile phone with LTE-Advanced Pro network; 2 hours/day, 6 weeks). The visual evoked potential (VEP) was recorded and determined amplitudes and latencies of VEP waves. Optic nerve malondialdehyde level, catalase and superoxide dismutase activities were determined. Furthermore, ultrastructural and morphometric changes of optic nerve were evaluated. Results In VEP recordings, the mean VEP amplitudes of experimental group were significantly lower than control group. In ultrastructural evaluation, myelinated nerve fibres and glial cells were observed in normal histologic appearance both in sham and experimental group. However, by performing morphometric analysis, in the experimental group, axonal diameter and myelin thickness were shown to be lower and the G-ratio was higher than in the sham group. In the experimental group, malondialdehyde level was significantly higher and superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were significantly lower than sham group. There was a high correlation between VEP wave amplitudes and oxidative stress markers. Conclusion Findings obtained in this study support optic nerve damage. These results point out an important risk that may decrease the quality of life.

Arbutin Improves Functional Recovery and Attenuates Glial Activation in Lysolecethin-Induced Demyelination Model in Rat Optic Chiasm.

Neuroinflammation, glial activation, and oxidative injury are the main pathological mechanisms of demyelination in multiple sclerosis (MS). Arbutin, a natural polyphenol compound, possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties whose therapeutic potential has not been studied in the experimental animal models of MS. In the present study, the efficiency of arbutin on lysolecthin (LPC)-induced local demyelination model was investigated. Demyelination was induced by micro-injection of 2μl LPC (1%) into the rat optic chiasm and the treated group received daily injection of arbutin (50mg/kg, i.p) during 2weeks. Visual-evoked potential (VEP) recordings were used to functionally assess the visual pathway. Gene expression analysis was done to evaluate the arbutin effect on the inflammatory, stress oxidative-related mediators, and myelin markers. The myelin-specific staining was performed to assess demyelination and GFAP staining as an astrocyte marker. We found that arbutin significantly reduced P1-latency of VEPs waves and demyelination at 7 and 14days post-demyelination. Arbutin decreased inflammatory cytokines (IL-1B, IL-17, TNF-α) and iNOS mRNA expression level. In addition, the expression level of anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10) and antioxidant mediators (Nrf-2 and HO-1) was enhanced by arbutin treatment. Arbutin increased MBP and Olig2 expression levels in demyelination context. Finally, arbutin attenuated GFAP as an astrocyte marker. Finally, this study demonstrates that arbutin improves functional recovery and myelin repair in the demyelinated optic chiasm through attenuation of inflammation, astrocyte activation, and oxidative stress. These findings might open new promising avenues for treating demyelinating disorders such as multiple sclerosis. Graphical abstract.

Cross-modal reaction of auditory and visual cortices after long-term bilateral hearing deprivation in the rat

Visual cortex (VC) over-activation analysed by evoked responses has been demonstrated in congenital deafness and after long-term acquired hearing loss in humans. However, permanent hearing deprivation has not yet been explored in animal models. Thus, the present study aimed to examine functional and molecular changes underlying the visual and auditory cross-modal reaction. For such purpose, we analysed cortical visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and the gene expression (RT-qPCR) of a set of markers for neuronal activation (c-Fos) and activity-dependent homeostatic compensation (Arc/Arg3.1). To determine the state of excitation and inhibition, we performed RT-qPCR and quantitative immunocytochemistry for excitatory (receptor subunits GluA2/3) and inhibitory (GABAA-α1, GABAB-R2, GAD65/67 and parvalbumin-PV) markers. VC over-activation was demonstrated by a significant increase in VEPs wave N1 and by up-regulation of the activity-dependent early genes c-Fos and Arc/Arg3.1 (thus confirming, by RT-qPCR, our previously published immunocytochemical results). GluA2 gene and protein expression were significantly increased in the auditory cortex (AC), particularly in layers 2/3 pyramidal neurons, but inhibitory markers (GAD65/67 and PV-GABA interneurons) were also significantly upregulated in the AC, indicating a concurrent increase in inhibition. Therefore, after permanent hearing loss in the rat, the VC is not only over-activated but also potentially balanced by homeostatic regulation, while excitatory and inhibitory markers remain imbalanced in the AC, most likely resulting from changes in horizontal intermodal regulation.

Haemodilution and head-down tilting induce functional injury in the rat optic nerve: A model for peri-operative ischemic optic neuropathy.

Mechanisms of peri-operative ischaemic optic neuropathy remain poorly understood. Both specific pre-operative and intra-operative factors have been examined by retrospective studies, but no animal model currently exists. To develop a rodent model of peri-operative ischaemic optic neuropathy. In rats, we performed head-down tilt and/or haemodilution, theorising that the combination damages the optic nerve. Animal study. Laboratory. A total of 36 rats, in four groups, completed the functional examination of retina and optic nerve after the interventions. Anaesthetised groups (n>8) were supine (SUP) for 5 h, head-down tilted 70° for 5 h, head-down tilted/haemodiluted for 5 h or SUP/haemodiluted for 5 h. We measured blood pressure, heart rate, intra-ocular pressure and maintained constant temperature. Retinal function (electroretinography), scotopic threshold response (STR) (for retinal ganglion cells) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) (for transmission through the optic nerve). We imaged the optic nerve in vivo and evaluated retinal histology, apoptotic cells and glial activation in the optic nerve. Retinal and optic nerve function were followed to 14 and 28 days after experiments. At 28 days in head down tilted/haemodiluted rats, negative STR decreased (about 50% amplitude reduction, P = 0.006), VEP wave N2-P3 decreased (70% amplitude reduction, P = 0.01) and P2 latency increased (35%, P = 0.003), optic discs were swollen and glial activation was present in the optic nerve. SUP/haemodiluted rats had decreases in negative STR and increased VEP latency, but no glial activation. An injury partly resembling human ischaemic optic neuropathy can be produced in rats by combining haemodilution and head-down tilt. Significant functional changes were also present with haemodilution alone. Future studies with this partial optic nerve injury may enable understanding of mechanisms of peri-operative ischaemic optic neuropathy and could help discover preventive or treatment strategies.

Querectin improves myelin repair of optic chiasm in lyolecithin-induced focal demyelination model

Although the beneficial effects of quercetin on oligodendrocyte precursor cell (OPCs) population has been evaluated in-vitro, there are few studies about the effects of quercetin on myelin repair in the context of demyelination. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of querectin on functional recovery and myelin repair of optic chiasm in lysolecithin (LPC)-induced demyelination model. Demyelination was induced by local injection of LPC 1% (2 μl) into rat optic chiasm. Querectin at doses 25 or 50 mg/kg was administrated daily by oral gavage for 7 or 14 days post LPC. Visual evoked potential (VEPs) recordings were used to assess the functional property of the optic pathway. Immunostaining and myelin staining were performed on brain sections 7 or 14 days post lesion. Electrophysiological data indicated that LPC injection increased the latency of VEPs waves and quercetin effectively reduced the delay of visual signals. The level of glial activation was alleviated in animals under treatment of quercetin compared to vehicle group. Furthermore, quercetin treatment decreased the extent of demyelination areas and increased the remyelination process following LPC injection. Overall, our findings indicate that quercetin could remarkably improve the functional recovery of the optic pathway by its protective effects on myelin sheath and attenuation of glial activation.

The neuro-ophthalmological effects related to long-term occupational exposure to organic solvents in painters.

Organic solvents are widely used in many industries, and usually, exposure occurs with mixtures of solvents. Organic solvent mixtures are known for their ability to affect tissues of high lipid content including the myelin sheath in the nervous system. The purpose of this work was to study the evidence that long-term (more than 10 years) exposure to organic solvent mixtures among painters can induce neuro-ophthalmological effects on the function of retinal ganglion cells and the optic tract. Twenty workers with long-term occupational exposure to mixed organic solvents were compared to 40 control subjects. The controls were matched for age, gender, and demographic characteristics but were not occupationally exposed to any known organic solvents, using the following comparators: visual evoked potential (VEP), electroretinogram (ERG), color vision (CV), and contrast sensitivity (CS) testing. Environmental monitoring was done in the work environment with consideration to the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists Threshold Limit Values (ACGIH-TLVs). The exposed group had significantly longer latency and higher amplitude of VEP waves especially P100, higher Color Confusion Index (CCI), especially affecting the blue-yellow spectrum, and lower Log CS. There was no significant difference between exposed and nonexposed groups in full-field flash ERG response; however, in the pattern ERG, the exposed group had significantly longer latency of P50, which reflects changes in the retinal ganglion cell. Long-term occupational exposure to mixed organic solvents appeared to affect the optic tract functions in the form of increasing latency of VEP response, affecting the quality of CV and decreasing CS. It also affects the retinal ganglion cell layer with increased latency of P50 of the pattern ERG response.

Oct4 transcription factor in conjunction with valproic acid accelerates myelin repair in demyelinated optic chiasm in mice

Multiple sclerosis is a demyelinating disease with severe neurological symptoms due to blockage of signal conduction in affected axons. Spontaneous remyelination via endogenous progenitors is limited and eventually fails. Recent reports showed that forced expression of some transcription factors within the brain converted somatic cells to neural progenitors and neuroblasts. Here, we report the effect of valproic acid (VPA) along with forced expression of Oct4 transcription factor on lysolecithin (LPC)-induced experimental demyelination.Mice were gavaged with VPA for one week, and then inducible Oct4 expressing lentiviral particles were injected into the lateral ventricle. After one-week induction of Oct4, LPC was injected into the optic chiasm. Functional remyelination was assessed by visual-evoked potential (VEP) recording. Myelination level was studied using FluoroMyelin staining and immunohistofluorescent (IHF) against proteolipid protein (PLP). IHF was also performed to detect Oct4 and SSEA1 as pluripotency markers and Olig2, Sox10, CNPase and PDGFRα as oligodendrocyte lineage markers.One week after injection of Oct4 expressing vector, pluripotency markers SSEA1 and Oct4 were detected in the rims of the 3rd ventricle. LPC injection caused extensive demyelination and significantly delayed the latency of VEP wave. Animals pre-treated with VPA+Oct4 expressing vector, showed faster recovery in the VEP latency and enhanced myelination. Immunostaining against oligodendrocyte lineage markers showed an increased number of Sox10+ and myelinating cells. Moreover, transdifferentiation of some Oct4-transfected cells (GFP+ cells) to Olig2+ and CNPase+ cells was confirmed by immunostaining.One-week administration of VPA followed by one-week forced expression of Oct4 enhanced myelination by converting transduced cells to myelinating oligodendrocytes. This finding seems promising for enhancing myelin repair within the adult brains.

Evaluation of transcranial surgical decompression of the optic canal as a treatment option for traumatic optic neuropathy

PurposeTraumatic optic neuropathy (TON) is a serious complication of head trauma, with the incidence rate ranging from 0.5% to 5%. The two treatment options widely practiced for TON are: (i) high-dose corticosteroid therapy and (ii) surgical decompression. However, till date, there is no consensus on the treatment protocol. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of transcranial decompression of optic canal in TON patients. MethodsA total of 39 patients with visual loss resulting from TON between January 2005 and June 2013 were retrospectively reviewed for preoperative vision, preoperative image, visual evoked potential (VEP), surgical approach, postoperative visual acuity, complications, and follow-up results. ResultsAll these patients underwent transcranial decompression of optic canal. During the three-month follow-up period, among the 39 patients, 21 showed an improvement in their eyesight, 6 recovered to standard logarithmic visual acuity chart “visible,” 10 could count fingers, 2 could see hand movement, and 3 regained light sensation. ConclusionVisual evoked potential could be used as an important preoperative and prognostic evaluation parameter for TON patients. Once TON was diagnosed, surgery is a promising therapeutic option, especially when a VEP wave is detected, irrespective of the HRCT scan findings. Operative time between trauma and operation is not necessary reference to assess the therapeutic effect of surgical decompression. The poor results of this procedure may be related to the severity of optic nerve injury. The patient's age is an important factor affecting the surgical outcomes.

Impacts of acupuncture on brainstem evoked potentials in patients with primary depression

ObjectiveTo observe the impacts of acupuncture on brainstem evoked potentials in the patients with primary depression. MethodsForty cases of primary depression were treated by acupuncture at Bâihuì (▪ GV 20), Yìntáng (▪ GV 29), Dàzhuī (▪ GV 14), bilateral Shénmén (▪ HT 7), bilateral Tàichōng (▪ LR 3), bilateral Nèiguān (▪ PC 6) and Sānyïnjiéo (▪ SP 6). The needles were retained for 30 min. Acupuncture treatment was given once every two days, three treatments a week. The brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) and visual evoked potential (VEP) were observed in 6 weeks of treatment. The change in Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) score was observed before and after treatment in the depression group. ResultsAfter treatment, VEP wave latency was shortened significantly in patients of depression (P<0.05), BAEPIII wave latency was shortened significantly (P<0.05). The score of HAMD was decreased apparently in the depression group (P<0.05). ConclusionsThe stressability of visual and auditory stimuli in the central nervous system was decreased in the patients of depression. Acupuncture shortens remarkably the brainstem evoked potentials latency in the patients of depression and achieves the effective results in the treatment of primary depression.

Assessment of visual evoked potentials in stable COPD patients with no visual impairment

OBJECTIVE:To assess whether patients having stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with no clinical evidence of visual impairment or peripheral neuropathy have visual evoked potentials (VEP) abnormalities on electrophysiologic evaluation.METHODS:In the present study, 80 male subjects with no clinical neuropathy or visual impairment were included; 40 COPD patients and 40 age-matched healthy volunteers. The characteristics of subjects including age, quantum of smoking, duration of illness (in COPD patients only), and spirometric indices {forced expiratory volume in first second (FEV1), FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC) %, and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR)} were assessed. The mental status was assessed using a questionnaire Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) Questionnaire. Electrophysiologic studies for the evaluation of VEP were carried out on computerized equipment. Latency and amplitude of P100 wave were analyzed from the VEP wave patterns obtained through a standardized protocol in both the groups to detect abnormalities in the COPD group. For the COPD group, correlations of P100 parameters with patient characteristics, spirometric indices, and MMSE scores were assessed. Significant abnormality was defined as a variation beyond healthy volunteer mean ± 3 standard deviation.RESULTS:We observed significantly prolonged latency and decreased amplitude of P100 in both eyes of the patients in COPD group compared with healthy volunteers. Twenty-two of the 40 COPD patients (55%) had significant abnormalities in P100 latency, and three COPD patients (7.5%) had abnormalities in P100 amplitude. The latency of P100 on the right side had statistically significant inverse correlation with FEV1/FVC% and MMSE score.CONCLUSIONS:Twenty-three of the 40 stable COPD patients (compared with healthy volunteers) were observed to have significant VEP abnormality detected on electrophysiologic evaluation: 21/40 having prolonged P100 latency and only 2/40 with decreased P100 amplitude. The statistically significant correlations were observed only between P100 latency (right eye) and FEV1/FVC as well as MMSE scores. The rest of the correlations were not statistically significant.

Effects of preterm extrauterine visual experience on the development of the human visual system: a flash VEP study.

To compare the functional maturation of the human visual system between intra- and extrauterine course flash visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in preterm infants (gestational age 24 to 36 weeks). Previously established normal values, with special reference to the two components of the N1 wave, were employed (Tsuneishi 1995). A cross-sectional analysis of 124 infants at 36 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA), showed that there are no differences in the absolute values of VEP peak latencies depending on the postnatal age (PNA). Conversely, the N1 wave form changes with increasing PNA from a wave in which the early peak (N1a) has a higher amplitude than the late peak (N1b) into the reverse situation with a higher amplitude of the N1b as compared to N1a. This observation may correlate with the maturation of the neuronal networks in the visual cortex. In a longitudinal analysis of 50 infants followed for more than 5 sessions of weekly recordings, we found that the individual rapid decrease in the N1a latency, which may reflect the initiation of myelination in the optic radiation, most frequently occurs at around 37 weeks PMA, regardless of PNA. Preterm extrauterine visual experience has little effect on the myelination process in the visual pathway, but has a marked effect on the developmental changes in VEP wave form which reflect the developmental changes of the neuronal networks in the visual cortex.

Bimoclomol improves early electrophysiological signs of retinopathy in diabetic rats.

A silent process involving both neural and vascular structures in diabetic retina persists for several years before clinically detectable retinopathy. Recordings of the electroretinogram (ERG) and visual evoked potential (VEP) provide early warning of abnormalities in the visual pathway of diabetic patients and animal models. Treatment of streptozotocin-diabetic rats for 1 or 2 months with the heat-shock protein coinducer bimoclomol, a drug ameliorating experimental neuropathy, prevented and corrected the abnormal increase in latency and reduction of amplitude of ERG and VEP waves both in acute and chronic experiments. Improvements may be explained by cytoprotective effect of bimoclomol on retinal glia and/or neurons against diabetes-related ischemic cell damages. These findings suggest that bimoclomol may have future therapeutic use in diabetic retinopathy.

Monitoring visual evoked potentials during retraction of the canine optic nerve: protective effect of unroofing the optic canal.

To evaluate the effects of unroofing the optic canal during retraction of the optic nerve, the authors monitored changes in visual evoked potentials (VEPs) stimulated by a light-emitting diode in the canine model. At rest, an early VEP wave was reliably observed with an amplitude of 8.2 +/- 0.6 microV and a latency of 51.5 +/- 0.7 msec; this wave was named N50. The intracranial optic nerve was retracted using a weight of 5, 10 or 50 g. The earliest change in VEP noted during retraction was a reduction in N50 wave amplitude. The length of time required until N50 amplitude decreased to 50% of the control group (T50) was 10.7 +/- 1.8 minutes with a weight of 5 g, 4.9 +/- 0.7 minutes with 10 g, and 2.9 +/- 0.4 minutes with 50 g, with statistically significant differences between the groups. Retraction of the optic nerve with all weights finally resulted in the disappearance of the N50 wave. The amplitude of the N50 wave recovered fully to control size when retraction was released immediately after the wave disappeared. The time course of amplitude recovery did not differ significantly between groups. Unroofing the optic canal prolonged the T50 during retraction significantly to 20.7 +/- 2.9 minutes with a weight of 5 g, 18.9 +/- 4.2 with 10 g, and 9.0 +/- 2.4 with 50 g. These results demonstrate that unroofing the optic canal can protect the optic nerve from damage during operations that require optic nerve retraction.

Effect of attention on the VEP in binocular and monocular conditions

To study the effect of voluntary concentration on the visual evoked potential (VEP) with monocular and binocular rivalry stimulation, pattern reversal VEPs were recorded using 5.5 min arc and 50 min arc check sizes. Subjects viewed the VEP stimulus with the left eye and a light emitting diode (LED) with the right eye. They were asked to concentrate on either the VEP stimulus or the LED. The two targets were arranged so that the left eye remained accurately focused on, and directed to, the centre of the VEP stimulus throughout the recordings. The binocular VEP wave became attenuated when the subject concentrated on the LED. The wave was reduced to around two-thirds of the amplitude present when concentrating on the VEP stimulus. This reduction in the VEP amplitude is considered to be due to a binocular interaction because there was a lack of amplitude attenuation when the experiment was repeated with monocular conditions. The results also suggest that the wave is smaller when the non-dominant eye receives the VEP stimulus compared with that when the dominant eye is stimulated by the VEP target.

Postnatal Development of Flash Visual Evoked Potentials in the Jaundiced Gunn Rat

In this study, the postnatal development of flash visual evoked potential (VEP) has been monitored in the jaundiced (jj) Gunn rat model of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia to determine whether this evoked response is affected by bilirubin-induced neurotoxicity. VEP could first be recorded at 16 d of age. The jj rats exhibited prolonged wave latencies and lower wave amplitudes during the 3rd wk of postnatal life, when compared with their nonjaundiced littermates. There was no correlation at 21 d of age between VEP parameters and either bilirubin levels or body weight. About one third of the jj animals died between 21 and 28 d of age. The average VEP wave latencies at 21 d of age of the rats who were to die was prolonged compared with those of rats who survived till at least 28 d of age. Thus, the latency of VEP waves at the age of 21 d appears to be related to the further outcome of jj Gunn rats. Although wave amplitudes were lower in jj as compared with nonjaundiced 21-d-old animals, there were no amplitude differences between the jj rats who would die and those who would survive during the 4th wk of life. These findings may contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis of bilirubin encephalopathy in the neonatal period.

Source geometry and dynamics of the visual evoked potential

A method is developed for the analysis of the steady-state visual evoked potential (VEP) recorded at an array of electrodes. The VEP is assumed to result from the sum of a number of independent mechanisms. Each mechanisms proves to have a fixed intracerebral source (independent of stimulus paradigm) and dynamics which depend on the stimulus. The steps in the analysis are: (1) Fourier analysis of the responses and retention of the first 4 even harmonics; (2) factor analysis in the frequency domain; (3) an invariant representation (‘the invariant fingerprint’) of the geometric information contained in the factor analysis; and (4) interpretation of the invariant fingerprint in terms of a simple biophysical model. This analysis is applied to responses elicited by a contrast-reversing checkerboard. The dependence of the midline VEP wave form on reversal frequency, check size, and area of stimulation (upper, lower, and full-field) reflects a change in the dynamics of the generators, rather than a change in their geometry.

Screen design and visual evoked potentials.

In this paper we present a method to complement the sophisticated mathematical analyses on screen designs. The use of an objective measure of screen "goodness" is employed, namely, the Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) of the humans performing the test. After the screen is designed, the text on the screen is transformed into an intensity pattern using a recursive algorithm. This intensity pattern is used as a stimulus to obtain wave forms from the scalp of the subject, and the wave forms are analyzed as to their frequency content. A 2-D Fourier transform of the screen design is performed and the frequency components of the power spectrum are compared to the frequency components of the wave form. Our results indicate that when a "balanced" and well-designed screen is used as a stimulus, the second harmonic of the VEP wave form is always smaller than the first harmonic. The implications of such an analysis are discussed.
