The Effects of Economic Globalization on Indigenous Communities

Purpose: The general purpose of this study was to look into the effects of economic globalization on indigenous communities. Methodology: The study adopted a desktop research methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. This secondary data was easily accessed through the online journals and library. Findings: The findings reveal that there exists a contextual and methodological gap relating to economic globalization on indigenous communities. Preliminary empirical review revealed that economic globalization had diverse and often adverse impacts on indigenous livelihoods, cultures, and environments. It found that while some communities experienced short-term economic gains, many faced displacement, land dispossession, and environmental degradation. Additionally, the study highlighted the importance of recognizing and protecting indigenous rights, advocating for more inclusive and equitable development approaches. Collaboration between indigenous communities, governments, and civil society is crucial for addressing the challenges posed by economic globalization and promoting sustainable development that respects indigenous sovereignty and fosters social justice. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: World-Systems theory, Cultural Hybridity theory and the Dependency theory may be used to anchor future studies on economic globalization on indigenous communities. The study offered valuable recommendations that contributed to theory, practice, and policy in addressing the challenges faced by indigenous peoples. By synthesizing existing theoretical frameworks and advocating for culturally sensitive development policies, the study provided a comprehensive approach to understanding and addressing the impacts of economic globalization on indigenous livelihoods, cultures, and environments. The recommendations emphasized the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge, strengthening legal frameworks for indigenous rights protection, and fostering collaborative partnerships among diverse stakeholders. Overall, the study's recommendations aimed to empower indigenous communities, promote social justice, and advance a vision of sustainable development that prioritizes indigenous well-being.

Contested visions of sustainable development in conflicts over renewable energy, land, and human rights: A case study of Unión Hidalgo, Mexico

The so-called ‘green shift’ poses dilemmas in developing sustainable sources of energy while ensuring the respect and protection of the rights of affected communities. The article seeks to advance understanding of how prevailing conceptualisations of Sustainable Development – as formulated in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – are constructed and adopted at different scales and are implicated in and shape struggles over land and environmental conflicts. The exceptional geographical conditions for wind energy production in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca have led to significant investments in wind energy projects. In Unión Hidalgo, two projects are already in operation, the focus here. A content analysis was carried out of 36 documents published by three key actors involved (local defenders, companies, and the government at the state and federal levels). The results are then triangulated with insights from semi-structured interviews with local environmental defenders. The article shows how rights-based dimensions are perceived in a highly variable way and power relations unfold in discursive practices. That the project was eventually stopped, does, however, suggest the polyvalence of human rights, but that they are highly contingent – in this case, critically, part of social mobilisation, domestic litigation, and extra-territorial obligations of a company headquartered in France, all of which appear to rebalance power asymmetries uncovered in the analysis here.

Towards social responsibility 2.0 for Moroccan public establishments and enterprises: Artificial intelligence and new technologies at the service of sustainable development

<p>This work explores the transition to intelligent corporate social responsibility (CSR) 2.0, an advanced approach to CSR that integrates artificial intelligence and new technologies to promote sustainability and efficiency. In Morocco, this evolution is of great importance, as it is part of the ambitious national vision of sustainable development, with objectives to reduce environmental impact and promote transparency. Moroccan public establishments and enterprises (PEE), as key players in crucial sectors such as energy, water and infrastructure, have already begun to develop CSR strategies. However, it has become clear that the shift towards intelligent Social Responsibility of the Organizations (RSO or OSR) based on artificial intelligence and new technologies is essential to meet current and future challenges. This subject is of paramount importance in the Moroccan context, as it offers a concrete means of achieving the country’s sustainability goals while strengthening regional leadership. In addition, it opens the door to future research and studies in this field, encouraging other researchers to explore this promising avenue which has positive potential for humanity as a whole, creating responsible and sustainable development models for the future.</p>

Augmenting the cities’ and metropolitan regional demands for mega rail infrastructure: the application of SWOT and factor analysis

PurposeIn successfully meeting city and metropolitan growth, sustainable development is compulsory. Sustainability is a must-focus for any project, particularly for large and mega rail infrastructure. This paper aims to investigate to what degree social, environmental and economic factors influence the government when planning sustainable rail infrastructure projects. To respond to such a matter, this paper focuses on two Australian mega-rail projects: the South West Rail Link (SWRL) and the Mernda Rail Extension (MRE).Design/methodology/approachAs the basis of an experimental evaluation framework strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) and factor analysis were used. These two methods were specifically selected as comparative tools for SWRL and SWRL projects, to measure their overall sustainability effect.FindingsUsing factor analysis, in the MRE, the factors of network capacity, accessibility, employment and urban planning were seen frequently throughout the case study. However, politics and economic growth had lower frequencies throughout this case study. This difference between the high-weighted factors is likely a key element that determined the SWRL to be more sustainable than the MRE. The SWOT analysis showed the strengths the MRE had over the SWRL such as resource use and waste management, and natural habitat preservation. These two analyses have shown that overall, calculating the sustainability levels of a project can be subjective, based on the conditions surrounding various analysis techniques.Originality/valueThis paper first introduces SWRL and MRE projects followed by a discussion about their overall sustainable development. Both projects go beyond the traditional megaprojects' goal of improving economic growth by developing and enhancing infrastructure. Globally, for such projects, sustainability measures are now considered alongside the goal of economic growth. Second, SWOT and factor analysis are undertaken to further evaluate the complexity of such projects. This includes their overall sustainable development vision alignment with environmental, economic and social factors.

Real yields and PVSYST simulations: comparative analysis based on four photovoltaic installations at Ibn Tofail University

Abstract Since the PVSYST simulator is the most well-known software among researchers and PV experts, we chose to compare its results to those of the manual method. Thus, the objective of the article was to obtain the degree of similarity between the results of the PVSYST simulation and the manual calculation of the same parameters, based on the study of the photovoltaic systems of the University Ibn Tofail. Those installations are installed in the Faculty of Letters, Science, the Presidency and CFC. The later used in our study, have different parameters. Hence, to collect these parameters and their distinct data we used multiple sources. The datasheets of each components of the PV system contains the parameters that distinguish the devices therefore it was mandatory to look for that information, since it will facilitate our study. The meteorological database PVGIS, was our reference for the temperature and irradiation data. What’s more is the PVSYST software that helps in the simulation of the PV system and thus having a detailed report with massive information. All this collection of data was aiming to help us comparing the results of yields and other parameters by manual calculation versus simulation in PVSYST. Morocco has demonstrated a strong commitment to combat climate change by embracing renewable energy, particularly photovoltaic systems. In this pursuit, universities like Ibn Tofail University (UIT) play a crucial role in addressing climate challenges and developing research solutions for mitigation. UIT actively participates in projects related to environmental protection and sustainable development, contributing to Morocco’s growth and higher education advancement. As part of its efforts, UIT has been involved in implementing sustainable green projects and promoting renewable energy technologies. A specific study at UIT aimed to compare PVSYST simulation results with manual calculations for four PV systems on campus, considering parameters such as orientation, electrical installation, and panel types. The International Energy Agency (IEA) Photovoltaic Systems Program has established standards and a key concept, the yield factor, measuring the net energy production over a facility’s lifetime compared to the energy used for construction, operation, and supply. By evaluating the accuracy and efficiency of PVSYST, researchers sought to advance the use of PV systems and contribute to Morocco’s renewable energy goals. Such research not only aids in the progression of renewable energy technology but also aligns with Morocco’s vision for sustainable development and environmental protection.

Operationalizing Digitainability: Encouraging Mindfulness to Harness the Power of Digitalization for Sustainable Development

Digitalization is globally transforming the world with profound implications. It has enormous potential to foster progress toward sustainability. However, in its current form, digitalization also continues to enable and encourage practices with numerous unsustainable impacts affecting our environment, ingraining inequality, and degrading quality of life. There is an urgent need to identify such multifaceted impacts holistically. Impact assessment of digital interventions (DIs) leading to digitalization is essential specifically for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Action is required to understand the pursuit of short-term gains toward achieving long-term value-driven sustainable development. We need to understand the impact of DIs on various actors and in diverse contexts. A holistic understanding of the impact will help us align the visions of sustainable development and identify potential measures to mitigate negative short and long-term impacts. The recently developed digitainability assessment framework (DAF) unveils the impact of DIs with an in-depth context-aware assessment and offers an evidence-based impact profile of SDGs at the indicator level. This paper demonstrates how DAF can be instrumental in guiding participatory action for the implementation of digitainability practices. This paper summarizes the insights developed during the Digitainable Spring School 2022 (DSS) on “Sustainability with Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence,” one of whose goals was to operationalize the DAF as a tool in the participatory action process with collaboration and active involvement of diverse professionals in the field of digitalization and sustainability. The DAF guides a holistic context-aware process formulation for a given DI. An evidence-based evaluation within the DAF protocol benchmarks a specific DI’s impact against the SDG indicators framework. The participating experts worked together to identify a DI and gather and analyze evidence by operationalizing the DAF. The four DIs identified in the process are as follows: smart home technology (SHT) for energy efficiency, the blockchain for food security, artificial intelligence (AI) for land use and cover change (LUCC), and Big Data for international law. Each of the four expert groups addresses different DIs for digitainability assessment using different techniques to gather and analyze data related to the criteria and indicators. The knowledge presented here could increase understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to digitainability and provide a structure for developing and implementing robust digitainability practices with data-driven insights.

Steel fiber's effects on the physical and mechanical characteristics of selfcompacting concrete (SCC) made of recycled gravel

In order to adapt the concrete to structures with more complex and highly reinforced sections,research has been carried out in recent years in Japan with the aim of developing concrete formulationscharacterized by high workability while being stable. (Low segregation, bleeding, and compaction), withgood mechanical characteristics and durability. The culmination of this research has given rise to a newtype of concrete that can satisfy the properties mentioned above, called self-compacting concrete (SCC).SCC is characterized by its high volume of paste, a large amount of fines, the use of superplasticizers, anda low volume of gravel. For the preservation of the environment and in the vision of sustainabledevelopment, due to the increasing demand for the use of aggregates, crushed gravel can be replaced byrecycled concrete gravel. To improve the properties of SCCs based on recycled concrete gravel, metal fibersare added. The objective of this work is to study the effect of the introduction of metal fibers in selfcompacting concretes based on recycled concrete gravel on the physico-mechanical properties of theseSCCs. The results obtained show that 50% recycled concrete gravel is the best, and the 1% fibers improvethe physico-mechanical characteristics of these SCCs.

Telling Our Story—A Community-Based Meso-Level Approach to Sustainable Community Development

Engaging diverse stakeholders in dialogue around sustainable development has proven to be a successful strategy to advance sustainable development goals. Without local engagement, sustainable development efforts can fail to accomplish their objectives. Yet, determining the best strategy for engaging diverse stakeholders can be challenging. Similarly challenging can be the transfer of information regarding successful development strategies from one community to another. Local specificity is key to finding sustainable development solutions. Yet, knowledge creation one-community-at-a-time is time consuming and limits the transferability of knowledge. Meso-level approaches are therefore essential to finding transferable solutions. The Five-Pillars approach to development is such a meso-level mixed methods approach. It identifies a manageable set of indicators in five common categories: education, health, environmental quality, social and cultural amenities, and information and transportation access. These indicator categories form the basis for selecting specific locations within a community where local stakeholders engage in writing a collective story about their sustainable development future. This article describes the implementation of the Five Pillars approach in two neighborhoods in Washington D.C. It concludes that the approach offers an effective engagement strategy that gives voice to the sustainable development vision of local stakeholders while providing a framework that can benefit diverse communities.

Using ecological security pattern to identify priority protected areas: A case study in the Wuhan Metropolitan Area, China

Protected areas (PAs) play a key role in mitigating ecological crises. Currently, priority protected areas (PPAs) focus on biological conservation, and a few studies have considered the connectivity between patches. Few studies have formulated future conservation measures from the two dimensions of ecological security pattern (ESP) and reserve effectiveness. To fill this gap, this study considered the use of the ESP to identify areas that meet future conservation objectives. We take the Wuhan metropolitan area as the research area. We constructed a framework for formulating conservation development plans based on priority protected areas. The framework constructed a complete method system, and we focused on the construction of the evaluation index system based on landscape connectivity. Then, the effectiveness of the PAs could be evaluated, and the PPAs could be identified. The results showed that there were five isolated PAs among the existing PAs. Moreover, the total area of PPAs was 9328.91 km2, and they had high connectivity and ecological value. Due to the low protection rate of PPAs, PPAs are not the main protection target of PAs; thus, we take PPAs as a new area of future PAs. According to our plan, PPAs with different classes will achieve different functions in future protection work. Our framework focuses on achieving sustainable conservation and formulates new environmental protection and land planning measures to balance ecological conservation and urban development. It can provide key information to support the realization of the 2030 vision of sustainable development.

Exploring the Potential Opportunities of China’s Environmental Agenda, Ecological Civilization, on Global Sustainable Development

Ecological civilization is an important paradigm proposed by China in the context of growing local environmental challenges. The application of ecological civilization may have a spillover effect on the globe. To understand how the paradigm is interpreted by the international academic community and its Chinese counterpart, a bibliometric map of related articles published between 2000 and 2019 was mapped according to the identities of the collected Chinese and international bibliographies (9196 in CNKI and 664 in WoS). The keyword frequency statistics confirm that the concept of ecological civilization has been frequently connected to visions of sustainable development within and outside of China. The chronology of publication numbers and keyword bursts indicated that the studies related to ecological civilization have gained significant traction in China due to official support and the subjects of the research are sensitive to the change in leadership. The much lower publication number of international studies and China-centered co-authored studies indicate that the international community is less enthusiastic about ecological civilization. This may become a barrier to fostering consensus about international collaboration on mutually beneficial sustainable development. Based on the keyword burst analysis, this study is the first to reveal that green development is currently a shared interest in China and internationally in the literature on ecological civilization; international collaboration pursuing green development may be a path to realize global sustainable development goals. Further systemic review of the contents of individual research may need to be conducted to confirm and refine the findings of this bibliometric analysis.

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF CHINA'S AND INDIA'S NATIONAL ECONOMIES

The development of society is highly dependent on energy. However, the extensive use of power causes global problems such as resource exhaustion and climate warming. China and India are typical fast-growing developing countries whose economic advancement relies on traditional energy consumption. To realize the vision of sustainable development for these states, it is necessary to study the nations' economic efficiency of power use. Based on the analysis of energy consumption and gross domestic product trends in China and India from 1990 to 2019, this paper discusses the changes in the energy consumption index per unit of gross domestic product. The authors concluded that the power consumption in China and India is mainly concentrated in the industry, residential, and transport sectors. Divided by resource types, the energy consumed by China comes primarily from coal, oil products, and electricity, while the power consumed by India is mainly from coal, oil products, biofuels and waste. Since both countries mostly use coal and oil products which belong to fossil fuels, they emit large amounts of carbon dioxide, endangering the environment quality. Given this, China and India should focus on green power development. China's total energy consumption is much larger than India's, and China's gross domestic product is much larger than India's. However, China's energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product is less than India's. The higher the energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product is, the higher the dependence of economic development on energy is. The authors' suggestions are to develop non-fossil energy sources and adjust the energy mix, recycle solid wastes, and encourage carbon trading, climate investment and financing in the states to reach sustainable development targets.

From the Utopia of Sustainable Development to Sustainable Topoi

The hegemonic discourse of sustainable development adopted as an international alternative solution to the socio-ecological crisis has implied a progression of the modern utopian project and most importantly, an intrinsic contradiction and omission that positions sustainable development as something that is not in any place. To understand, discuss, and transcend this oxymoron, we first review the modern utopian project and analyze its paradigmatic and ontological assumptions about knowledge, time, and space. Second, we show that sustainable development just re-adapted the founding premises of the modern utopias. Third, to transcend the modern utopian facet of sustainable development, we suggest an understanding of sustainability that stems from a topographical way of thinking. We suggest this approach allows us to seek alternatives to the modern epistemology and ontology that have shaped the current dominant vision of sustainable development. Finally, we propose to move from the modern utopia of sustainable development to the praxis of topographical sustainabilities to trigger a more comprehensive and relational praxis of sustainability.

A Living Lab Approach towards Promoting Innovation

The transformation projects developed in the context of digital education, sustainable development research and social innovation, and social entrepreneurship have turned the West University of Timişoara (WUT) into an active contributor to the Smart Specialization Strategy at local, regional, and national levels, from its previous status of a passive receiver of policy and R&D strategies. By exploiting open innovation tools integrated into entrepreneurship and aimed at relevant community research, WUT is currently actively involved in the incubation and/or acceleration of more than 200 start-ups, meant to enhance research relevance to actively promote higher technology readiness levels (TRLs) and social acceptance of research results. Building on top of three priority pillars - Digital, Green, and Well-Being, WUT has reconsidered its open innovation strategy and action plan to benefit the community, using a multistakeholder approach. In this context, the Digital & Green Living Lab, with cross-cutting priorities such as entrepreneurship and Culture and Creative Industries, focuses on meaningful transformation projects that contribute to enhanced community well-being. In this direction, important contributions were already achieved toward the digital transformation of educational programs and administrative sectors. Through its sustainable development vision, WUT acts on functional teams working in circular economy consortia, renewable energies, and environmental research.

Mapping of groundwater salinization and modelling using meta-heuristic algorithms for the coastal aquifer of eastern Saudi Arabia

The growing increase in groundwater (GW) salinization in the coastal aquifers has reached an alarming socio-economic menace in Saudi Arabia and various places globally due to several natural and anthropogenic activities. Hence, evaluating the GW salinization is paramount to safeguarding the water resources planning and management. This study presents three different scenarios viz.: real field investigation, experimental laboratory analysis (using ion chromatography (IC) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), etc.), and artificial intelligence (AI) based metaheuristic optimization (MO) algorithms in Saudi Arabia. The main purpose of this study is to validate the obtained experimental-based analysis using hybrid MO techniques comprising of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) hybridized with genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and biogeography-based optimization (BBO) for identification of GW salinization in the coastal region of eastern Saudi Arabia. Additionally, ArcGIS 10.3 software generates the prediction map based on ANFIS-GA, ANFIS-PSO, and ANFIS-BBO. Feature selection was assessed using the PSO algorithm, and four indices evaluated the estimated models, namely, root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and standard deviation (SD). The simulated results are based on three variable input combinations, which showed that the ANFIS-PSO (MAE = 0.00439) algorithm had the highest accuracy (99 %), followed by the ANFIS-GA (MAE = 0.00767) and ANFIS-BBO (MAE = 0.0132) algorithms. Besides, Ca2+, Na+, Mg2+, and Cl− were the most influential parameters. The accuracy also demonstrated the potential reliability of MO algorithms based on spatial distribution mapping. The employed approach proved to be merit and reliable tool for water resources decision-makers in the coastal aquifer of Saudi Arabia. This approach is believed to improve water scarcity as one of the essential targets for Goal 6 of Sustainable Development Vision 2030 and the Kingdom in general.

Exploring physical education teachers’ perceptions of sustainable development goals and education for sustainable development

ABSTRACT The world, society and education are constantly evolving, and to respond to these changes, the main governmental institutions have been proposing different global strategies to focus efforts in the same direction. Currently, the United Nations and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) have presented a series of indicators that could help to minimise the environmental, economic and social instability we are experiencing. In this sense, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has been described as a fundamental factor. Specifically, in previous work, we argued that physical education (PE) could be a good tool to contribute to SDGs. Based on this, no research analysing the voices of Physical Education Teachers (PET) on how this contribution could be made has been identified in previous literature. Therefore, the objectives of this research are: (1) to analyse the voices and opinions of active PETs in terms of the knowledge they have about Sustainable Development (SD); (2) to determine their opinions about the contribution that PE could make to SDGs; and finally, (3) to identify the challenges and limitations of pedagogical action of SD in PE. For this purpose, a qualitative analysis through a semi-structured interview with 41 active PETs was carried out. The main findings will be presented and discussed around four themes: (a) agreement on the concept of sustainability; (b) PE can contribute to the achievement of SDGs; (c) ambiguity in applying SDGs to PE lessons; and (d) teachers’ constraints on how to implement SDGs in PE. It seems to indicate that PETs do not have a multidimensional vision of sustainable development. While they recognise the potential of PE to contribute to SDGs through awareness raising and student learning, they point to its pedagogical and formative constraints as the main barriers to being able to contribute. They pointed to a lack of knowledge on how to do so, guidelines on how to integrate ESD, lack of involvement, shortage of time or resources in school physical education.

Design for financial sustainability

SummaryThe 1987 United Nations Brundtland Report established the vision of sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” How might we anticipate the requirements of future custodians of vast, continuously morphing socio-technical-ecological systems while addressing current pressing needs? An abstract, principled approach (such as axiomatic design) might help address such ambiguity. Such systems are composed of large numbers of information-processing agents/agencies that collectively form a complex adaptive system (CAS). The focus here is on financial sustainability: (1) what is a principled approach toward sustainable design? (2) What design insights might we obtain by studying financial crises forensically against sustainability successes in nature? (3) How to design for financial sustainability? This paper adopts the CAS framework alongside axiomatic design to help elicit design patterns and anti-patterns of sustainability. Inspired by nature, a promising inside-out design pattern emerges.

Analyzing the Effects of Demographic Transition on Child Labor in Developing Economies

Purpose: In efforts to realize the dividend of demographic transition, elimination of child labor has become an utmost challenge for the relevant international bodies. Knowing the importance of this issue, children are now the center of the vision of sustainable development as SDG 8.7 and 16.2 are directly related to children and their lives. In this context, the purpose of the current study is to analyze the linkages between demographic variables (such as working-age population, labor force participation rate, labor force growth rate, life expectancy, and dependency ratio and population growth) and child labor along with some other macroeconomic determinants of child labor.
 Design/Methodology/Approach: A panel of 45 developing countries covering the period 2000 – 2019 is used for empirical analysis. Dynamic panel GMM technique is utilized for empirical results.
 Findings: The results show that increase in the working-age population, GDP per capita, age dependency old and young, and health expenditures increase the child labor but increase in life expectancy and educational expenditures reduce the child labor in developing countries. Population growth rate reduces child labor in overall developing countries and high-income developing economies but increases child labor in low income developing countries. The increase in labor force growth rate increases child labor in a panel of developing economies and low-income developing economies but reduces child labor in high-income developing economies.
 Implications/Originality/Value: Public expenditures in health and education along with increasing the female labor force participation rate is recommended to reduce the child labor in developing countries.

Ukrainian Reform of Decentralization Processes Consolidating the Sustainable Development: Environmental and Legal Aspects

The strategic vision of sustainable development for Ukraine is based on ensuring national interests and accomplishing international commitments proceeding to sustainable development. Sustainable development involves decentralization and implementation of regional policy, which is based on a harmonious combination of national and regional interests regarding ecology. This article aims to identify and analyze environmental and legal components of the decentralization of power in Ukraine as a means to sustainable development provisions. The main focus of ecological decentralization is placed on land resources. This is due to the peculiarities of the national system of environmental law (natural resource and environmental regulations) of Ukraine. The article highlights the main and additional areas of environmental decentralization. It analyzes the legislation and the practice of its implementation in the sphere of natural resources reallocation, territorial communities’ demarcation, and their planning process. The roles of cadasters, registers, and electronic databases in maintaining natural resources for the successful decentralization of power are analyzed. The legal perspectives for the decentralization of environmental control are also outlined. The status of financial and ecological resources redistribution in the process of decentralization is highlighted along with the ways of its subsequent improvement. The conclusion suggests the ways for the improvement of legislation and the practice of its implementation to accomplish successful decentralization reform.

Materials for SDGs: A Synergy Towards Sustainable Development

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a tangible and holistic vision of sustainable development, embodying a systemic vision that integrates environmental, social, and economic aspects. By adopting such a systemic vision, designers can drastically reduce the negative impact of their products. Materials represent a design element capable of influencing the entire life cycle of a product. Indeed, in the last decade there has been a frenetic race towards greener materials, focusing mostly on the environmental aspects of sustainability and neglecting economic and social dimensions. This paper aims to investigate a new thread of thought regarding sustainability within the design process, analysing the connections between SDGs and materials. The result is a taxonomy of materials that meet the SDGs and enhance their relationships by offering designers a new approach to sustainable material selection and development.

THEORETICAL ISSUES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION AND EDUCATION SYSTEM SECURITY

Education for sustainable development is the key to ecologically oriented economic development by gradually balancing environmental and social development in line with the global vision of sustainable development in the 21st century. The concept of sustainable development has been the main focus and the concept of the world countries. It is the main subject of improving people's living standards without exceeding the carrying capacity of ecosystems is understood as sustainable development, and the key to this development is to develop and nurture people in all aspects. In other words, sustainable development is the ability to harmonize human activities with the development process and to use the environment and natural resources to meet current needs without compromising the needs of future generations. The world countries around the world are linking economic growth to social, environmental, and security issues. The United Nations (UN) and its specialized agencies, focusing on development and the environment, convened two worldwide UN conferences in 1972 and 1992, setting out the main directions for humanity in the new century. This is the "21st Century Development Agenda" approved in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro. Chapter 36 of the program, entitled “Supporting Education, Public Awareness and Training”, emphasizes the importance of enhancing the role of education in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, supporting all aspects of it, and raising public awareness through formal and non-formal education. This is the basis for the education of sustainable development.
