High-Throughput Phenotyping for the Evaluation of Agronomic Potential and Root Quality in Tropical Carrot Using RGB Sensors

The objective of this study was to verify the genetic dissimilarity and validate image phenotyping using RGB (red, green, and blue) sensors in tropical carrot germplasms. The experiment was conducted in the city of Carandaí-MG, Brazil, using 57 tropical carrot entries from Seminis and three commercial entries. The entries were evaluated agronomically and two flights with Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) were conducted. Clustering was performed to validate the existence of genetic variability among the entries using an artificial neural network to produce a Kohonen’s self-organizing map. The genotype–ideotype distance index was used to verify the best entries. Genetic variability among the tropical carrot entries was evidenced by the formation of six groups. The Brightness Index (BI), Primary Colors Hue Index (HI), Overall Hue Index (HUE), Normalized Green Red Difference Index (NGRDI), Soil Color Index (SCI), and Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI), as well as the calculated areas of marketable, unmarketable, and total roots, were correlated with agronomic characters, including leaf blight severity and root yield. This indicates that tropical carrot materials can be indirectly evaluated via remote sensing. Ten entries were selected using the genotype–ideotype distance (2, 15, 16, 22, 34, 37, 39, 51, 52, and 53), confirming the superiority of the entries.

Selection based on the phenomenic approach and agronomic ideotic of white oat

AbstractThis work aimed to propose multivariate selection strategies reconciling the agronomic ideotype and vegetation indices to obtain genotypes with high tillering, early cycle, tolerant to lodging, and foliar diseases. The sowing of white oat lines was carried out on April 27, 2023, allocated in an experimental design of blocks augmented with interspersed controls. The regular treatments correspond to 593 lines of white oat and the common treatments were represented by the cultivars URS Olada, URS Altaneira, and IPR Artêmis arranged in four replications. The measurements of variables of agronomic interest took place in each experimental unit as follows: percentage of tillering, days to flowering, percentage of lodging, percentage of leaf rust, percentage of stem rust, and percentage of leaf spots. The phenomic analyses took place through flights carried out with a specialized drone, equipped with a 20 MP resolution camera and standard height (80 m). The best proposed indices were index for reducing the percentage of lodging with normalized green (NG), green–red ratio (IGR), soil color index (SCI), green leaf index (GLI), visible atmospheric resistant index (VARI), green leaf index 2 (GLI2), red–blue (RB), blue green pigment (BGI), normalized red–blue difference index (NRBDI), green–blue ratio, BIM, normalized green–blue difference index (NGBDI), and ExGR; index for reducing days to flowering with brightness index (BI), NRBDI, days to flowering (DF), gray (GRAY), IGR, average intensity (L), normalized red (NR), RGRI, SCI, BGI, BIM, GLI, NGBDI, and NG; and index for reducing the percentage of stem rust with NG, BI, Gray2, GLI2, RGRI, GLI, VARI, BGI, L, NR, RB, and coloration index. Only two lines were selected concomitantly with multivariate indices, line L167 (M5, SA) and L426 (M6, ETMS), that combine lodging tolerance and leaf rust genes.

Corrigendum to: Utilisation of unmanned aerial vehicle imagery to assess growth parameters in mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek)

Context Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) with red–green–blue (RGB) cameras are increasingly used as a monitoring tool in farming systems. This is the first field study in mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilzcek) using UAV and image analysis across multiple seasons. Aims This study aims to validate the use of UAV imagery to assess growth parameters (biomass, leaf area, fractional light interception and radiation use efficiency) in mungbean across multiple seasons. Methods Field experiments were conducted in summer 2018/19 and spring–summer 2019/20 for three sowing dates. Growth parameters were collected fortnightly to match UAV flights throughout crop development. Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) and computed vegetation indices: colour index of vegetation extraction (CIVE), green leaf index (GLI), excess green index (ExG), normalised green-red difference index (NGRDI) and visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI) were generated from UAV orthomosaic images. Key results (1) Mungbean biomass can be accurately estimated at the pre-flowering stage using RGB imagery acquired with UAVs; (2) a more accurate relationship between the UAV-based RGB imagery and ground data was observed during pre-flowering compared to post-flowering stages in mungbean; (3) FVC strongly correlated with biomass (R2 = 0.79) during the pre-flowering stage; NGRDI (R2 = 0.86) showed a better ability to directly predict biomass across the three experiments in the pre-flowering stages. Conclusion UAV-based RGB imagery is a promising technology to replace manual light interception measurements and predict biomass, particularly at earlier growth stages of mungbean. Implication These findings can assist researchers in evaluating agronomic strategies and considering the necessary management practices for different seasonal conditions.

Pre-Harvest Corn Grain Moisture Estimation Using Aerial Multispectral Imagery and Machine Learning Techniques

Corn grain moisture (CGM) is critical to estimate grain maturity status and schedule harvest. Traditional methods for determining CGM range from manual scouting, destructive laboratory analyses, and weather-based dry down estimates. Such methods are either time consuming, expensive, spatially inaccurate, or subjective, therefore they are prone to errors or limitations. Realizing that precision harvest management could be critical for extracting the maximum crop value, this study evaluates the estimation of CGM at a pre-harvest stage using high-resolution (1.3 cm/pixel) multispectral imagery and machine learning techniques. Aerial imagery data were collected in the 2022 cropping season over 116 experimental corn planted plots. A total of 24 vegetation indices (VIs) were derived from imagery data along with reflectance (REF) information in the blue, green, red, red-edge, and near-infrared imaging spectrum that was initially evaluated for inter-correlations as well as subject to principal component analysis (PCA). VIs including the Green Normalized Difference Index (GNDVI), Green Chlorophyll Index (GCI), Infrared Percentage Vegetation Index (IPVI), Simple Ratio Index (SR), Normalized Difference Red-Edge Index (NDRE), and Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI) had the highest correlations with CGM (r: 0.68–0.80). Next, two state-of-the-art statistical and four machine learning (ML) models (Stepwise Linear Regression (SLR), Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN)), and their 120 derivates (six ML models × two input groups (REFs and REFs+VIs) × 10 train–test data split ratios (starting 50:50)) were formulated and evaluated for CGM estimation. The CGM estimation accuracy was impacted by the ML model and train-test data split ratio. However, the impact was not significant for the input groups. For validation over the train and entire dataset, RF performed the best at a 95:5 split ratio, and REFs+VIs as the input variables (rtrain: 0.97, rRMSEtrain: 1.17%, rentire: 0.95, rRMSEentire: 1.37%). However, when validated for the test dataset, an increase in the train–test split ratio decreased the performances of the other ML models where SVM performed the best at a 50:50 split ratio (r = 0.70, rRMSE = 2.58%) and with REFs+VIs as the input variables. The 95:5 train–test ratio showed the best performance across all the models, which may be a suitable ratio for relatively smaller or medium-sized datasets. RF was identified to be the most stable and consistent ML model (r: 0.95, rRMSE: 1.37%). Findings in the study indicate that the integration of aerial remote sensing and ML-based data-run techniques could be useful for reliably predicting CGM at the pre-harvest stage, and developing precision corn harvest scheduling and management strategies for the growers.

The reliability of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with multispectral cameras for estimating chlorophyll content, plant height, canopy area, and fruit total number of Lemons (Citrus limon)

Monitoring lemon production requires appropriate and efficient technology. The use of UAVs can addressed these challenges. The purpose of this study was to determine the best vegetation indices (VIs) for estimating chlorophyll content, plant height (PH), canopy area (CA), and fruit total numberas (FTN). CCM 200 was used as a tool to measure the chlorophyll content index (CCI), the number of fruits was measured by hand-counter, and other variables were recorded in meters. The UAV used was a Phantom 4 with a multispectral camera capable of capturing five different bands. The VIs was obtained via analysis of digital numbers generated by the multispectral camera. Then, the VIs was correlated with the CCI, PH, CA and FTN. VIs tested included the following: the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the normalized difference vegetation index-green (NDVIg), the normalized different index (NDI), green minus red (GMR), simple ratio (SR), the Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI), normalized difference red edge (NDRE), simple ratio red-edge (SR<sub>RE</sub>), the simple ratio vegetation index (SR<sub>VI</sub>), and the Canopy Chlorophyll Content Index (CCCI). The best model for predicting CCI was obtained using the NDVIg (R<sup>2</sup>=0.8480; RMSE=6.1665 and RRMSE=0.0908). Meanwhile, SR turned out to be the best model for predicting PH (R<sup>2</sup>=0.8266; RMSE=15.6432 and RRMSE=0.0883), CA (R<sup>2</sup>=0.6886; RMSE= 0.8826 and RRMSE=0.1907), and FTN (R<sup>2</sup>=0.6850; RMSE=24.5574 and RRMSE=0.3503). The implication of these results for future activities includes establishing early monitoring and evaluation systems for lemon yield and production. This model was developed and tested in this specific location and under these environmental conditions.

Applying RGB-Based Vegetation Indices Obtained from UAS Imagery for Monitoring the Rice Crop at the Field Scale: A Case Study in Portugal

Nowadays, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) provide an efficient and relatively affordable remote sensing technology for assessing vegetation attributes and status across agricultural areas through wide-area imagery collected with cameras installed on board. This reduces the cost and time of crop monitoring at the field scale in comparison to conventional field surveys. In general, by using remote sensing-based approaches, information on crop conditions is obtained through the calculation and mapping of multispectral vegetation indices. However, some farmers are unable to afford the cost of multispectral images, while the use of RGB images could be a viable approach for monitoring the rice crop quickly and cost-effectively. Nevertheless, the suitability of RGB indices for this specific purpose is not yet well established and needs further investigation. The aim of this work is to explore the use of UAS-based RGB vegetation indices to monitor the rice crop. The study was conducted in a paddy area located in the Lis Valley (Central Portugal). The results revealed that the RGB indices, Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI) and Triangular Greenness Index (TGI) can be useful tools for rice crop monitoring in the absence of multispectral images, particularly in the late vegetative phase.

Uncrewed aerial vehicle radiometric calibration: A comparison of autoexposure and fixed‐exposure images

AbstractRemote sensing with uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) is increasingly being used in agriculture to provide data on the physical characteristics of plants under field conditions. Data accuracy is critical for decision making with a high degree of confidence. In this work, we compared two multispectral camera calibration methods for image data collected with a UAV: (1) an autoexposure method that relies on a single calibration panel and a post hoc calibration, and (2) a fixed‐exposure system that uses three in‐field gray calibration panels using the empirical line calibration method. Both methods were compared to reflectance data from (a) four ground calibration targets measured with a spectroradiometer and (b) a single manned aircraft image calibrated with commercial calibration tarps. In a band‐by‐band comparison, the autoexposure method produced almost twice as much radiometric error on average compared with fixed exposure. Because remote sensing data are commonly converted to spectral indices, the calibration methods were also evaluated by calculating the visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI) and comparing the resulting data to the manned aircraft image. Similarly, the autoexposure method in this case produced twice the error of the fixed‐exposure method. The effect of the error was considered in a production agriculture context by simulating a remote sensing‐based prescription map for pesticide application in a cotton (Gossypium) field and calculating the number of mislabeled management zones. The simulation showed that the autoexposure method would be more costly to the farm because of its higher error, roughly $8.00/ha based on the assumptions made.

Quantification of Biophysical Parameters and Economic Yield in Cotton and Rice Using Drone Technology

New agronomic opportunities for more informed agricultural decisions and enhanced crop management have been made possible by drone-based near-ground remote sensing. Obtaining precise non-destructive information regarding crop biophysical characteristics at spatial and temporal scales is now possible. Drone-mounted multispectral and thermal sensors were used to assess crop phenology, condition, and stress by profiling spectral vegetation indices in crop fields. In this study, vegetation indices, viz., Atmospherically Resistant Vegetation Index (ARVI), Modified Chlorophyll Absorption Ratio Index (MCARI), Wide Dynamic Range Vegetation Index (WDRVI), Normalized Red–Green Difference Index (NGRDI), Excess Green Index (ExG), Red–Green Blue Vegetation Index (RGBVI), and Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI) were generated. Furthermore, Pearson correlation analysis showed a better correlation between WDRVI and VARI with LAI (R = 0.955 and R = 0.982) ground truth data. In contrast, a strong correlation (R = 0.931 and R = 0.844) was recorded with MCARI and NGRDI with SPAD chlorophyll ground truth data. Then, the best-performing indices, WDRVI and MCARI in cotton, and VARI and NGRDI in rice, were further used to generate the yield model. This study for determining LAI and chlorophyll shows that high spatial resolution drone imageries are accurate and fast. As a result, finding out the LAI and chlorophyll and how they affect crop yield at a regional scale is helpful. The widespread use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and yield prediction were technical components of large-scale precision agriculture.

Abundance considerations for modeling yield of rapeseed at the flowering stage.

To stabilize the edible oil market, it is necessary to determine the oil yield in advance, so the accurate and fast technology of estimating rapeseed yield is of great significance in agricultural production activities. Due to the long flowering time of rapeseed and the characteristics of petal color that are obviously different from other crops, the flowering period can be carefully considered in crop classification and yield estimation. A field experiment was conducted to obtain the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multispectral images. Field measurements consisted of the reflectance of flowers, leaves, and soils at the flowering stage and rapeseed yield at physiological maturity. Moreover, GF-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite images were collected to compare the applicability of yield estimation methods. The abundance of different organs of rapeseed was extracted by the spectral mixture analysis (SMA) technology, which was multiplied by vegetation indices (VIs) respectively to estimate the yield. For the UAV-scale, the product of VIs and leaf abundance (AbdLF) was closely related to rapeseed yield, which was better than the VIs models for yield estimation, with the coefficient of determination (R2) above 0.78. The yield estimation models of the product of normalized difference yellowness index (NDYI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and AbdLF had the highest accuracy, with the coefficients of variation (CVs) below 10%. For the satellite scale, most of the estimation models of the product of VIs and rapeseed AbdLF were also improved compared with the VIs models. The yield estimation models of the product of AbdLF and renormalized difference VI (RDVI) and EVI (RDVI×AbdLF and EVI×AbdLF) had the steady improvement, with CVs below 13.1%. Furthermore, the yield estimation models of the product of AbdLF and normalized difference VI (NDVI), visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI), RDVI, and EVI had consistent performance at both UAV and satellite scales. The results showed that considering SMA could improve the limitation of using only VIs to retrieve rapeseed yield at the flowering stage. Our results indicate that the abundance of rapeseed leaves can be a potential indicator of yield prediction during the flowering stage.

Multi-Parametric Approach to Management Zone Delineation in a Hazelnut Grove in Italy

The increase in high-density hazelnut (Corylus avellana) areas drives the interest in practices of precision management. This work addressed soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa), RGB aerial (UAV) images, proximal sensing, and field scouting in delineating and validating management zones (MZs) in a 2.96 ha hazelnut grove in Italy. ECa data were fitted to a semi-variogram, interpolated (simple kriging), and clustered, resulting in two MZs that were subjected to soil analysis. RGB imagery was used to extract tree canopies from the soil background and determine two vegetation indices (VIs) of general crop status: the Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI) and the Normalized Green-Red Difference Index (NGRDI). Then, plant growth parameters were manually assessed (tree height, crown size, etc.) and a proximal VI, the Canopy Index (CI), was determined with the MECS-VINE® vertical multisensor. MZ1 was characterized by lower ECa values than MZ2. This was associated with a lower clay content (9% vs. 21% in MZ1 vs. MZ2) and organic matter content (1.03% vs. 1.51% in MZ1 vs. MZ2), indicating lower soil fertility in MZ1 vs. MZ2. Additionally, hazelnut trees had significantly smaller canopies (1.42 vs. 1.94 m2 tree−1) and slightly lower values of VARI, NGRDI, and CI in MZ1 vs. MZ2. In conclusion, our approach used ECa to identify homogeneous field areas, which showed differences in soil properties influencing tree growth. This is the premise for differential hazelnut management in view of better efficiency and sustainability in the use of crop inputs.

Detection of susceptible Norway spruce to bark beetle attack using PlanetScope multispectral imagery

Climate change-related acute or long-term drought stress can weaken forest ecosystems and result in widespread bark beetle infestations. Eurasian spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus L.) infestations have been occurring in Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.]-dominated forests in central Europe including the Czechia. These infestations appear regularly, especially in homogeneous spruce stands, and the impact varies with the climate-induced water stress conditions. The removal of infected trees before the beetles leave the bark is an important step in forest pest management. Early identification of susceptible trees to infestations is also very important but quite challenging since stressed tree-tops show no sign of discolouration in the visible spectrum. We investigated if individual spectral bandwidths or developed spectral vegetation indices (SVIs), can be used to differentiate non-attacked trees, assumed to be healthy, from trees susceptible to attacks in the later stages of a growing season. And, how the temporal-scale patterns of individual bands and developed SVIs of susceptible trees to attacks, driven by changes in spectral characteristics of trees, behave differently than those patterns observed for healthy trees. The multispectral imagery from the PlanetScope satellite coupled with field data were used to statistically test the competency of the individual band and/or developed SVIs to differentiate two designated classes of healthy and susceptible trees. We found significant differences between SVIs of the susceptible and healthy spruce forests using the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI). The accuracy for both indices ranged from 0.7 to 0.78; the highest among all examined indices. The results indicated that the spectral differences between the healthy and susceptible trees were present at the beginning of the growing season before the attacks. The existing spectral differences, likely caused by water-stress stimuli such as droughts, may be a key to detecting forests susceptible to early infestations. Our introduced methodology can also be applied in future research, using new generations of the PlanetScope imagery, to assess forests susceptibility to bark beetle infestations early in the growing season.

Multivariate regressions coupling colorimetric and textural features derived from UAV-based RGB images can trace spatiotemporal variations of LAI well in a deciduous forest

ABSTRACT The leaf area index (LAI) is a critical structural variable related to a variety of biophysical processes of vegetation, and its efficient and accurate estimation is of importance to understanding ecosystem dynamics. Despite many direct and indirect methods being well developed, in the more recent unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based RGB data have emerged to be a promising alternative source for LAI estimation due to their low-cost, considerable flexibility, and useful applicability. In this study, we have investigated the feasibility of using multivariate regressions combined with different colour indices and textural-based features extracted from the UAV-based RGB images for tracing the dynamical LAI across different phenological stages in a typical temperate deciduous forest. The results demonstrated that the visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI) and red–green ratio index (RGR) were the best when using colour indices (CIs) alone while the difference (D) performed best if using textural information only to estimate the spatiotemporal changes of LAI. More importantly, the multivariate regressions based on the combination of CIs and texture-based features resulted in greater accuracies for LAI estimation, in which the random forest regression (R2 = 0.85, RMSE = 0.56, RPD = 2.52) outperformed other analytical methods. The findings of this study provide a cost-effective yet reliable approach to trace LAI from a commonly and easily obtained data source, with the capability to extend to ever-large scales for quick vegetation monitoring and management.

Development and Validation of a Model Based on Vegetation Indices for the Prediction of Sugarcane Yield

Currently, Brazil is the leading producer of sugarcane in the world, with self-sufficiency in the use of ethanol as a biofuel, as well as being one of the largest suppliers of sugar to the world. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for sugarcane production based on data extracted from aerial imagery obtained from drones or satellites, allowing the precise tracking of plant development in the field. A model based on a semiparametric approach associated with the inverse Gaussian distribution applied to vegetation indices (VIs), such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI), was developed with data from drone images obtained from two field experiments with randomized replications and four sugarcane varieties. These experiments were performed under conditions identical to those applied by sugarcane farmers. Further, the model validation was carried out by scaling up the analyses with data extracted from Sentinel-2 images of several commercial sugarcane fields. Very often, in countries such as Brazil, sugarcane crops occupy extensive areas. Consequently, the development of tools capable of being operated remotely automatically benefits the management of this crop in the field by avoiding laborious and time-consuming sampling and by promoting the reduction of operation costs. The results of the model application in both sources of data, i.e., data from field experiments as well as the data from commercial fields, showed a suitable level of overlap between the data of predicted yield using VIs generated from drone and satellite images with the data of verified yield obtained by measuring the production of experiments and commercial fields, indicating that the model is reliable for forecasting productivity months before the harvest time.

Prediction of Cereal Rye Cover Crop Biomass and Nutrient Accumulation Using Multi-Temporal Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Based Visible-Spectrum Vegetation Indices

In general, remote sensing studies assessing cover crop growth are species nonspecific, use imagery from satellites or modified unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and rely on multispectral vegetation indexes (VIs). However, using RGB imagery and visible-spectrum VIs from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) UAVs to assess species specific cover crop growth is limited in the current scientific literature. Thus, this study evaluated RGB imagery and visible-spectrum VIs from COTS UAVs for suitability to estimate concentration (%) and content (kg ha−1) based cereal rye (CR) biomass, carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and sulfur (S). UAV surveys were conducted at two fields in Indiana and evaluated five visible-spectrum VIs—Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI), Green Leaf Index (GLI), Modified Green Red Vegetation Index (MGRVI), Red Green Blue Vegetation Index (RGBVI), and Excess of Greenness (ExG). This study utilized simple linear regression (VI only) and stepwise multiple regression (VI with weather and geographic data) to produce individual models for estimating CR biomass, C, N, P, K, and S concentration and content. The goodness-of-fit statistics were generated using repeated K-fold cross-validation to compare individual model performance. In general, the models developed using simple linear regression were inferior to those developed using the multiple stepwise regression method. Furthermore, for models developed using the multiple stepwise regression method all five VIs performed similarly when estimating concentration-based CR variables; however, when estimating content-based CR variables the models developed with GLI, MGRVI, and RGBVI performed similarly explaining 74–81% of the variation in CR data, and outperformed VARI and ExG. However, on an individual field basis, MGRVI consistently outperformed GLI and RGBVI for all CR characteristics. This study demonstrates the potential to utilize COTS UAVs for estimating in-field CR characteristics; however, the models generated in this study need further development to expand geographic scope and incorporate additional abiotic factors.

Conclusion UAV-based RGB imagery is a promising technology to replace manual light interception measurements and predict biomass, particularly at earlier growth stages of mungbean. Implication These findings can assist researchers in evaluating agronomic strategies and considering the necessary management practices for different seasonal conditions.

Monitoring Dewatering Fish Spawning Sites in the Reservoir of a Large Hydropower Plant in a Lowland Country Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

This paper presents research concerning dewatered areas in the littoral zones of the Kaunas hydropower plant (HPP) reservoir in Lithuania. It is a multipurpose reservoir that is primarily used by two large hydropower plants for power generation. As a result of the peaking operation regime of the Kaunas HPP, the large quantity of water that is subtracted and released into the reservoir by the Kruonis pumped storage hydropower plant (PSP), and the reservoir morphology, i.e., the shallow, gently sloping littoral zone, significant dewatered areas can appear during drawdown operations. This is especially dangerous during the fish spawning period. Therefore, reservoir operation rules are in force that limit the operation of HPPs and secure other reservoir stakeholder needs. There is a lack of knowledge concerning fish spawning locations, how they change, and what areas are dewatered at different stages of HPP operation. This knowledge is crucial for decision-making and efficient reservoir storage management in order to simultaneously increase power generation and protect the environment. Current assessments of the spawning sites are mostly based on studies that were carried out in the 1990s. Surveying fish spawning sites is typically a difficult task that is usually carried out by performing manual bathymetric measurements due to the limitations of sonar in such conditions. A detailed survey of a small (approximately 5 ha) area containing several potential spawning sites was carried out using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) equipped with multispectral and conventional RGB cameras. The captured images were processed using photogrammetry and analyzed using various techniques, including machine learning. In order to highlight water and track changes, various indices were calculated and assessed, such as the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI), and Normalized Green-Red Difference Index (NGRDI). High-resolution multispectral images were used to analyze the spectral footprint of aquatic macrophytes, and the possibility of using the results of this study to identify and map potential spawning sites over the entire reservoir (approximately 63.5 km2) was evaluated. The aim of the study was to investigate and implement modern surveying techniques to improve usage of reservoir storage during hydropower plant drawdown operations. The experimental results show that thresholding of the NGRDI and supervised classification of the NDWI were the best-performing methods for the shoreline detection in the fish spawning sites.

Using sUAV imagery to map litter of invasive annual grass in dry environmental conditions

Invasive annual grasses pose a severe threat to drylands of the United States by increasing habitat degradation and the occurrence and severity of wildfires, while simultaneously outcompeting native species. Advances in technology and accessibility of small uncrewed aerial vehicles (sUAV) provide the opportunity for small preserve managers to map and monitor plant invasions in critical habitats for rare and endemic plant species. Many remote sensing techniques rely on the invasive plants' different phenological signals to distinguish them from native plants and habitats. However, invasive annual grasses in the western United States have high variability of interannual productivity and may not green up each year. Therefore, our objective was to use an sUAV (quadcopter drone) to map invasive annual grass regardless of phenological stage in critical Mojave Desert habitat. The study locations were White Dome, a small habitat preserve, and Beehive Dome in Washington County UT, USA. These areas are critical habitats for several endangered and threatened plant species and are covered with sensitive biological soil crusts, making on-the-ground measurements destructive. Using imagery collected with an sUAV we created red, green, blue (RGB) orthomosaics and calculated the Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI) across these areas. We successfully mapped the litter of invasive annual grasses at one of the two sites. At White Dome, we attained 95.2 % and 84.3 % Producer's and User's Accuracy in mapping invasive annual grasses based on the RGB spectral signature of invasive grass litter. At Beehive Dome, the heterogeneous nature of the edaphic and topographical features made it difficult to accurately map (<20 %) using VARI and RGB alone. Here, we propose plans to increase accuracy in these dryland systems to be able to map invasive annual grasses regardless of year or environmental conditions.

Utilization of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in identifying the characteristics of the riparian ecosystem of the Percut River, North Sumatra Province

The Percut River border area has changed its function. Changes in land use result in a decrease in the area and types of vegetation that grow on river borders. Considering that the area is quite long and inaccessible in some locations, it can identify riparian vegetation by utilizing remote sensing technology. This study aims to identify the characteristics of the Percut river riparian vegetation using a UAV. Eight vegetation indices were used to analyse land cover types in this riparian ecosystem, namely Green-red ratio (GR), Green-red vegetation index (GRVI), RGB-based vegetation index (RGBVI), Visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI), Simple blue-green ratio (BGI2), Excess green index (ExG), Normalized green-blue difference index (NGBDI) and Modified green-red vegetation index (MGRVI). The analysis of the vegetation index based on RGB images shows that not all indices used are good in separating vegetation from other land covers. Analysis of riparian vegetation characteristics based on the RGB index is recommended using the RGBVI index (RGB-based vegetation index).

Field evaluation of the effect of Aspergillus niger on lettuce growth using conventional measurements and a high-throughput phenotyping method based on aerial images.

Plant microbiome engineering is a promising tool to unlock crop productivity potential and exceed the yield obtained with conventional chemical inputs. We studied the effect of Aspergillus niger inoculation on in-field lettuce (Lactuca sativa) growth in soils with limiting and non-limiting P concentrations. Lettuce plants originating from inoculated seeds showed increased plant diameter (6.9%), number of leaves (8.1%), fresh weight (23.9%), and chlorophyll content (3.8%) as compared to non-inoculated ones. Inoculation of the seedling substrate just before transplanting was equally efficient to seed inoculation, while application of a granular formulation at transplanting did not perform well. Plant response to P addition was observed only up to 150 kg P2O5 ha-1, but A. niger inoculation allowed further increments in all vegetative parameters. We also employed a high-throughput phenotyping method based on aerial images, which allowed us to detect changes in plants due to A. niger inoculation. The visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI) produced an accurate prediction model for chlorophyll content, suggesting this method might be used to large-scale surveys of croplands inoculated with beneficial microorganisms. Our findings demonstrate that A. niger inoculation surpasses the yield obtained with conventional chemical inputs, allowing productivity gains not reached by just increasing P doses.

A comparison of field assessment methods for lucerne inoculation experiments

ABSTRACT Effective and practical measurement methods for assessing field inoculation experiments are needed to identify inoculants that could improve lucerne establishment. In this study, assessment potential of different existing measurement methods (plant height, Dualex 4 Scientific leaf-clip meter, GreenSeeker handheld crop sensor, drone-acquired orthomosaic calculation, yield, nutrient analysis and nodule assessment) were compared across 12 inoculation treatments applied to lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) at 3 sites. F-values were used to compare the potential of different methods to separate inoculation treatments. The handheld GreenSeeker measuring normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) showed the greatest potential for separating inoculation treatments in fields where lucerne had not previously been cultivated, followed by visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI) and green-red vegetation index (GRVI) from drone-acquired orthomosaics. These methods are non-destructive, low cost, require low labour input, fast, and do not require sample preparation, and thus are efficient measurement methods for disaggregating treatments in field inoculation experiments.
