Newcastle disease (ND) in laying birds in Asaba, Delta State: A Case Report

This is a case report of Newcastle disease in 52 weeks old laying birds with flock size of 2,500 birds and average weight of 1.7kg. The client presented history of continuous deaths and poor laying performance. The clinical signs observed in this case study were mortalities, low egg production, depression, nasal discharge, weakness, and diarrhoea (perineum matted with greenish faeces). Post-mortem investigation revealed haemorrhagic caecal tonsils, enteritis, slightly enlarged and friable liver with areas of discolouration and pin point haemorrhages on pro-ventricular glands. Blood samples were collected from 10 birds and the sera subjected to Haemagglutination and Heamagglutination Inhibition (HI) tests using known NDV (LaSota strain). Low Newcastle disease virus (NDV) antibody titres were detected from the sera samples suggesting that the birds were not protected against ND. The flock was managed by re-vaccination using NDV LaSota strain, followed by administration of a vitamins-mineral supplement, antibiotics, glucose and an analgesic and the treatment yielded favourable therapeutic results. The farmer was advised to apply strict biosecurity measures.

Assessing clinical benefits of live-attenuated vaccination in post-liver transplant patients: Analysis of breakthrough infections and natural boosters

Recently, live-attenuated measles, rubella, varicella, and mumps vaccines have been administered to carefully selected post-liver transplant patients. Although attention has been focused on post-vaccination antibody titers and adverse events, the real-life clinical benefits remain unclear. A comprehensive analysis of breakthrough infections and natural boosters (asymptomatic cases with significant elevation in virus antibody titers) following immunization post-liver transplantation was conducted from 2002-2023, exploring the timing, frequency, correlation with domestic outbreaks, and degree of antibody elevation. During the median 10-year observation period among 68 post-liver transplant patients, breakthrough infections occurred only in chickenpox, with 7 mild cases (1 episode/64 person-years). A total of 59 natural booster episodes (1, 5, 20, and 33 for measles, rubella, chickenpox, and mumps, respectively) were observed, with incidence rates of 1 per 569, 110, 22, and 17 person-years, respectively. The timing of natural boosters closely correlated with domestic outbreaks (P < .05 in chickenpox and mumps), influenced by local vaccine coverage. The degree of antibody elevation was significantly higher in individuals with breakthrough infections than in those with natural boosters (P < .05). These findings suggest that immunization with live-attenuated vaccines for post-liver transplant patients has demonstrated clinical benefits. Furthermore, mass vaccination has a positive impact on post-transplant patient outcomes.

Serological immune biomarker for disease severity in dengue-infectedpediatric hospitalized patients.

Clinical manifestation of dengue disease ranges from asymptomatic, febrile fever without warning sign (DOS) to serious outcome dengue with warning sign (DWS) and severe disease (SD) leading to shock syndrome and death. The role of antibody response in natural dengue infection is complex and not completely understood. Here, we aimed to assess serological marker for disease severity. Antibody response of dengue-confirmed pediatric patients with acute secondary infection were evaluated against infecting virus, immature virus, and recombinant envelop protein. Immature virus antibody titers were significantly higher in DWS as compared to DOS (p = 0.0006). However, antibody titers against recombinant envelop protein were higher in DOS as compared to DWS, and antibody avidity was significantly higher against infecting virus in DOS. Serum samples of DOS patients displayed higher in vitro neutralization potential in plaque assay as compared to DWS, whereas DWS serum samples showed higher antibody-dependent enhancement in the in vitro enhancement assays. Thus, antibodies targeting immature virus can predict disease severity and could be used in early forecast of disease outcome using anenzyme-linked immunoassay assaysystem which is less laborious and cheaper than plaque assay system for correlates of protection and could help optimize medical care and resources.

Immunostimulatory and Antibacterial Effects of Cannabis sativa L. Leaves on Broilers.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dried Cannabis sativa L. leaves as a phytogenic mixture added to broiler feed on CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocyte subpopulations, Newcastle disease virus (NDV) antibody titres, and the presence of E. coli in faecal samples. The study was conducted on 100 male Ross 308 broilers, divided into four groups of 25 broilers, for a 42-day research period. The groups were housed separately in boxes on a litter of softwood shavings and were fed starter mixture from day 1 to day 21 and finisher mixture from day 22 to day 42. Industrial hemp (C. sativa) was grown in the Crkvina area, Croatia (latitude: 45°18'46.8″ N; longitude: 15°31'30″ E). The hemp leaves were manually separated, sun-dried, and ground to a powder. The mixture offered to the control group did not contain cannabis leaves, whereas the three experimental groups received mixtures containing mixed cannabis leaves in a quantity of 10 g/kg, 20 g/kg, or 30 g/kg (E_10, E_20, and E_30, respectively). The mean NDV antibody level was uniform in all study groups until post-vaccination day 14 and increased comparably with time. The percentage of CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes in the peripheral blood subpopulation showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) in the E_20 group as compared with the control group and both the E_10 and E_30 groups throughout the study period. As the broiler age increased, the CD4+-to-CD8+ ratios also increased and were statistically significant (p < 0.0001) on day 42 in all experimental groups as compared to the control group. Comparing the control group with the experimental groups indicated that the bacterial count was lower in broiler groups having received feed with the addition of 20 g/kg and 30 g/kg C. sativa leaves. In conclusion, the C. sativa leaves were found to elicit a favourable immunomodulatory effect on cell-mediated and humoral immune responses in broilers via increased CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocyte subpopulations and higher CD4+:CD8+ cell ratios, thus indicating enhanced immune function capacity. In addition, C. sativa leaves may have complementary effects on the broiler post-vaccination immune response, increase broilers' resistance to infectious diseases, reduce the effect of stress associated with vaccination, and improve broiler health and welfare.

Mumps vaccination and immune status among Japanese university students: A multicenter cross-sectional study.

During the mumps outbreak in Japan in 2016, 159,031 cases were reported. In a survey conducted in 2015, mumps vaccination rates for the first dose were 30%-40%. However, the rates for two or more doses were not determined. We assessed the mumps vaccination rates and mumps infection prevalence according to vaccine doses received. This was a multicenter cross-sectional study. Students from three universities participated in 2019. Informed consent was obtained from the students and their guardians. The primary outcome was the prevalence of breakthrough mumps infection according to the number of doses of vaccine received. We collected data on past illnesses of vaccine-preventable diseases and vaccination history using a questionnaire, photocopies of the Maternal and Child Health Handbook from the guardians, and virus antibody titers from the universities' health centers. This study assessed 2004 eligible students and included 593 (29.6%); of these, 250 (42.7%) had a mumps infection history. Furthermore, 264 (44.6%), 31 (5.2%), and 2 (0.3%) students received the first, second, and third doses of mumps vaccine, respectively. The mumps seropositivity prevalence was 43.2% (n = 127), 36.7% (n = 97), 26.7% (n = 8), and 100% (n = 2) for the no-, first-, second-, and third-dose groups, respectively (p for trend = 0.09). The mumps infection prevalence rates were 69.8% (n = 203), 11.3% (n = 28), 3.9% (n = 1), and 0% for the no-, first-, second-, and third-dose groups, respectively. Approximately 1 in 10 students who had received only one dose of mumps-containing vaccine had a breakthrough infection history.

Limosilactobacillus reuteri peptidoglycan alleviates aflatoxin B1-induced toxicity through adsorbing toxins and improving growth, antioxidant status, immunity and liver pathological changes in chicks

ABSTRACT 1. The objective of this study was to investigate the protective effects of a peptidoglycan produced by Limosilactobacillus reuteri against aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) induced toxicity in vitro and in vivo in broiler chicks. 2. Toxin adsorption experiments were carried out firstly in vitro. These experiments indicated that the absorption efficiency of the peptidoglycan for AFB1 was 64.3–75.9%. 3. In the in vivo experiments, Hy-Line Brown chicks were fed a diet containing AFB1 at 71.43 µg/kg with and without peptidoglycan supplementation at concentrations of 100, 200, or 300 g/kg feed from 0–42 d of age. 4. The peptidoglycan supplementation in AFB1-contaminated diets resulted in significant improvements in terms of average daily gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, white blood cell count, haemoglobin content, glutathione peroxidase activity, immunoglobulin (Ig) A, IgG, IgM and Newcastle disease virus antibody titres (p < 0.05) and diminished liver steatosis. 5. In conclusion, peptidoglycan supplementation alleviated AFB1-induced toxicity through adsorbing toxins and improving growth performance, antioxidant ability, immunity and liver pathological changes in chicks. The optimal supplemental dose was 200 mg/kg in feed.

High throughput electronic detection of biomarkers using enzymatically amplified metallization on nanostructured surfaces.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays are commonly used for clinical biomarker detection. However, they remain resource-intensive and difficult to scale globally. Here we present a miniaturized direct electronic biosensing modality which generates a simple and sensitive, quantitative, resistive readout of analyte binding in immunoassays. It utilizes the enhanced metallization generated by synergistic catalytic activity of nanostructured surfaces, created using gold nanoparticles, with enzymatic metallization, catalyzed by analyte-bound enzyme-labeled antibodies, to create a connected metal layer between microelectrodes. Based on this scheme, we develop a portable, high-throughput electronic biomarker detection device and platform which allows testing 96 different low volume (3 μL) clinical samples in a handheld device. We find an analyte concentration-dependent tunable digital switch-like behavior in the measured resistance of this device. We use this system to further explore the mechanism of enhanced metallization and find optimal parameters. Finally, we use this platform to perform quantitative measurement of viral antigen-specific antibody titers from convalescent COVID-19 patient serum.

Perceived income inadequacy is associated with Epstein-Barr Virus latency and mental health outcomes in informal caregivers who are also employed in the healthcare industry

Finances are a prevalent source of stress. In a sample of 799 nursing home workers measured multiple times over 18 months, we found that higher perceived income inadequacy, the perception that one's expenses exceeds one's incomes, was associated with poorer self-reported mental health indicators and Epstein-Barr Virus antibody titers (a marker of cell-mediated immune function). Perceived income inadequacy predicted outcomes over and above the role of other socioeconomic status variables (objective household income and education). Mental health variables were not related to Epstein-Barr Virus antibody titers. Additionally, we found an interaction between perceived income inadequacy and informal caregiver status on our mental health outcomes; informal caregivers with higher perceived income inadequacy had poorer mental health than non-caregivers with the same perceived income inadequacy. Our findings may add nuance to the reserve capacity model, which states that those at lower socioeconomic levels are at higher risk of adverse health outcomes partly because they have fewer resources to address demands and strain. Perceived income inadequacy may significantly predict mental and physical well-being beyond other socioeconomic status variables, especially among lower-income employees. Caregiving stress and perceived income inadequacy may have synergistic effects on mental health.

SARS-CoV-2 Serological Investigation of White-Tailed Deer in Northeastern Ohio.

Coronaviruses are known to cross species barriers, and spill over among animals, from animals to humans, and vice versa. SARS-CoV-2 emerged in humans in late 2019. It is now known to infect numerous animal species, including companion animals and captive wildlife species. Experimental infections in other animals have established that many species are susceptible to infection, with new ones still being identified. We have developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detecting antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) and spike (S) proteins, that is both sensitive and specific. It can detect S antibodies in sera at dilutions greater than 1:10,000, and does not cross-react with antibodies to the other coronaviruses tested. We used the S antibody ELISA to test serum samples collected from 472 deer from ten sites in northeastern Ohio between November 2020 and March 2021, when the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic was first peaking in humans in Ohio, USA. Antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 were found in serum samples from every site, with an overall positivity rate of 17.2%; we further compared the viral neutralizing antibody titers to our ELISA results. These findings demonstrate the need to establish surveillance programs to monitor deer and other susceptible wildlife species globally.

Influence of age and vaccination interval on canine parvovirus, distemper virus, and adenovirus serum antibody titers

Canine core vaccine titer screenings are becoming increasingly popular in veterinary practice as a tool to guide vaccination decisions, despite a lack of supportive, peer-reviewed evidence-based literature. Additionally, it has been suggested that the canine core vaccine duration of host protective immunity can persist past the currently recommended vaccination interval. Thus, this study evaluated serum antibody titers against three core antigens in dogs with known vaccination histories and lifestyles, analyzing the effect of life stage, exposure risk, and time since last vaccination (TSLV). Clinically healthy dogs (n = 188) presenting to the primary care services of three colleges of veterinary medicine were selected to represent a variety of ages, breeds, and vaccination history. Serum antibody titers for canine parvovirus (CPV), canine distemper virus (CDV), and canine adenovirus-2 (CAV2) were measured via virus neutralization and hemagglutination inhibition. CAV2 and CPV titers decreased, while CDV titers had a decreasing trend with increasing time since last vaccination or vaccination interval. When assessing circulating antibody levels historially associated with protective immunity across various vaccination intervals, 62% (95%CI 36–82%; 8/13) of dogs had positive titers for CDV 5 years post last vaccination, while 92% (95%CI 67–99%; 12/13) of dogs were positive for CAV2 and CPV. Both advanced age and life stage were associated with lower titers and thus, identify a canine population cohort likely at higher disease risk. The results of this study revealed that patient duration of core vaccine-mediated immunity changes with a number of variables, with animal aging and time since vaccination influencing host humoral immunity. This provides further support for the performance of canine core antibody titers to assess whether a vaccine booster and/or specific type of booster is warranted.

Delaying the third dose of Japanese aluminum-free hepatitis A vaccine Aimmugen elicits effective immune responses against hepatitis A in adults

Inactivated aluminum-adsorbed hepatitis A vaccines such as Havrix, Vaqta, and Avaxim are commonly used worldwide. These vaccines are typically administered in a two-dose series (at 0 and 6–12 months). However, a lyophilized inactivated aluminum-free hepatitis A vaccine, Aimmugen, which is approved in Japan, is typically administered in a three-dose series (at 0, 2–4, and 24 weeks). Hence, individuals visiting endemic hepatitis A areas receive the primary two doses of Aimmugen before traveling and the third booster dose much later. It is currently uncertain whether boosting with a delayed third dose of Aimmugen is effective, or whether a new vaccination schedule should instead be initiated. Therefore, we investigated the anti-hepatitis-A viral immune response of adult travelers who received the third dose of Aimmugen more than 24 weeks after the first dose.Participants were vaccinated with the third dose of Aimmugen more than 2 years after the first two doses. Antibody titers were measured at Day 0 (prevaccination) and at 28–42 days after the third dose of Aimmugen. Twenty-nine adult participants were enrolled in the study (14 men and 15 women; mean age ± standard deviation age, 36.2 ± 8.1 years). The interval between the first two doses and the third dose was 3–14 years. The seroprotection rate (i.e., the percentage of participants with anti-hepatitis A virus antibody titers ≥ 10 mIU/mL) was 96.6 % (28/29) at Day 0 and increased to 100 % (29/29) at Days 28–42. Geometric mean concentration increased from 105 to 4,013 mIU/mL. We demonstrated that delaying the third dose of Aimmugen still elicited effective immune responses after priming with two doses of the vaccine.Trial registration: UMIN Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN-CTR): MIN000013624. COVID-19 booster vaccination during pregnancy enhances maternal binding and neutralizing antibody responses and transplacental antibody transfer to the newborn

The immune response to COVID-19 booster vaccinations during pregnancy for mothers and their newborns and the functional response of vaccine-induced antibodies against Omicron variants are not well characterized. We conducted a prospective, multicenter cohort study of participants vaccinated during pregnancy with primary or booster mRNA COVID-19 vaccines from July 2021 to January 2022 at 9 academic sites. We determined SARS-CoV-2 binding and live virus and pseudovirus neutralizing antibody (nAb) titers pre- and post-vaccination, and at delivery for both maternal and infant participants. Immune responses to ancestral and Omicron BA.1 SARS-CoV-2 strains were compared between primary and booster vaccine recipients in maternal sera at delivery and in cord blood, after adjusting for days since last vaccination.A total of 240 participants received either Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccine during pregnancy (primary 2-dose series: 167; booster dose: 73). Booster vaccination resulted in significantly higher binding and nAb titers, including to the Omicron BA.1 variant, in maternal serum at delivery and in cord blood compared to a primary 2-dose series (range 0.44–0.88 log10 higher, p < 0.0001 for all comparisons). Live virus nAb to Omicron BA.1 were present at delivery in 9 % (GMT ID50 12.7) of Pfizer and 22 % (GMT ID50 14.7) of Moderna primary series recipients, and in 73 % (GMT ID50 60.2) of mRNA boosted participants (p < 0.0001), although titers were significantly lower than to the D614G strain. Transplacental antibody transfer was efficient for all regimens with median transfer ratio range: 1.55–1.77 for IgG, 1.00–1.78 for live virus nAb and 1.79–2.36 for pseudovirus nAb. COVID-19 mRNA vaccination during pregnancy elicited robust immune responses in mothers and efficient transplacental antibody transfer to the newborn. A booster dose during pregnancy significantly increased maternal and cord blood binding and neutralizing antibody levels, including against Omicron BA.1. Findings support the use of a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy.

The impact of full-fat Hermetia illucens larvae meal on the health and immune system function of broiler chickens.

Alternative protein sources have recently been attracting growing interest as potential components of livestock nutrition. This study evaluated the effect on broiler health of replacing the soybean protein component of poultry feed with processed insect protein from farmed Hermetia illucens (HI) larvae. A total of 384 male broiler chicks were divided into four diet groups (eight pens/treatment and 12 birds/pen) and reared to the 42nd day of life (dol). Each treatment group received a starter diet until the 14th dol, then a grower diet until the 35th and finally a finisher diet until the 42nd. The soybean meal in standard diets was replaced with full-fat HI larvae meal in the following amounts: 0% for the control group HI-0, 50% for group HI-50, 75% for group HI-75, and 100% for group HI-100. At 1 dol, chicks were vaccinated against Marek's disease, coccidiosis, Newcastle disease and infectious bronchitis and at 7 dol against avian metapneumovirus infections using live-attenuated vaccines. Blood and spleen samples were collected at three and six weeks of age and analysed using ELISA, flow cytometry, haematology and biochemistry. On the 42nd dol, as the content of larvae meal in the chickens' diets increased, the birds' body weights decreased significantly. The substitution of the protein source had no effect on the haematological markers. In chicks that received larvae meal, there was a decrease in creatine kinase activity and phosphorus levels and an increase in calcium and uric acid levels in serum. Raising the proportion of full-fat HI larvae meal in the diet raised the percentage of T CD3+CD8a+ cells and lowered that of T CD3+CD4+ cells in both sample types. Chickens fed larvae meal had significantly lower post-vaccination anti-infectious bronchitis virus antibody titres. The poorer production results and impaired health in experimental birds may indicate lower than 50% protein substitution with full-fat HI larvae meal to be optimal.

Safety, Pharmacokinetics, Serum Neutralizing Titers, and Immunogenicity of Adintrevimab, a Monoclonal Antibody Targeting SARS-CoV-2: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Phase 1 Dose-escalation Study in Healthy Adults.

Adintrevimab is a fully human immunoglobulin G1 extended half-life monoclonal antibody that was developed to have broad neutralization against SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, and other SARS-like CoVs with pandemic potential. Here we report the safety, pharmacokinetics (PK), serum viral neutralizing antibody (sVNA) titers, and immunogenicity results of the first three cohorts evaluated in the first-in-human study of adintrevimab in healthy adults. This is a phase 1, randomized, placebo-controlled, single ascending-dose study of adintrevimab administered intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV) to healthy adults aged ≥ 18-55years with no current or prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. Participants were randomized 8:2 to adintrevimab or placebo in each of three dose cohorts: adintrevimab 300mg IM (cohort 1), 500mg IV (cohort 2), and 600mg IM (cohort 3). Follow-up was 12months. Blood samples were taken predose and at multiple time points postdose up to month 12 to assess sVNA, PK, and antidrug antibodies (ADAs). Thirty participants received a single dose of adintrevimab (n = 24; 8 per cohort) or placebo (n = 6). All except one adintrevimab participant in cohort 1 completed the study. No participants in any treatment arm experienced a study drug-related adverse event. Across adintrevimab-treated participants, 11 (45.8%) experienced at least one TEAE. All but one TEAE were mild in severity, and all were either viral infection or respiratory symptoms. There were no serious adverse events, discontinuations due to adverse events, or deaths. Adintrevimab exhibited a linear and dose-proportional PK profile and extended serum half-life (mean 96, 89, and 100days in cohorts 1, 2, and 3, respectively). Participants receiving adintrevimab demonstrated dose-dependent increased sVNA titers and breadth across multiple variants. Adintrevimab at doses of 300mg IM, 500mg IV, and 600mg IM was well tolerated in healthy adults. Adintrevimab demonstrated dose-proportional exposure, rapid development of neutralizing antibody titers, and an extended half-life.

Prognostic value of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 viral load and antibodies in patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

Observational studies have identified potential prognostic value for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral load and anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in COVID-19. However, viral load in nasopharyngeal swabs produced inconsistent results in prognostic analyses, and the prognostic value of viral load or antibodies has not been confirmed in large clinical trials. COVACTA and REMDACTA were double-blind, randomized controlled trials with a combined enrollment of 1078 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 treated with tocilizumab or placebo in COVACTA or tocilizumab plus remdesivir or placebo plus remdesivir in REMDACTA. We assessed the potential prognostic value of nasopharyngeal and serum SARS-CoV-2 viral load and serum anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies at baseline as biomarkers for clinical outcomes in patients enrolled in these trials. In adjusted Cox proportional hazard models, serum viral load was a more reliable predictor of clinical outcomes than nasopharyngeal viral load; high serum viral load was associated with higher risk for death and mechanical ventilation/death and lower likelihood of hospital discharge (high versus negative viral load hazard ratios [95% CI] were 2.87 [1.57-5.25], 3.86 [2.23-6.68], and 0.23 [0.14-0.36], respectively, in COVACTA and 8.11 [2.95-22.26], 10.29 [4.5-23.55], and 0.21 [0.15-0.29], respectively, in REMDACTA) and high serum viral load correlated with levels of inflammatory cytokines and lung damage biomarkers. High anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike protein antibody (ACOV2S) levels were associated with higher likelihood of hospital discharge (high versus below limit of quantification hazard ratios [95% CI] were 2.55 [1.59-4.08] for COVACTA and 1.54 [1.13-2.09] for REMDACTA). These results support the role of baseline SARS-CoV-2 serum viral load and ACOV2S antibody titers in predicting clinical outcomes for patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

Vaccine Interaction and Protection against Virulent Avian Metapneumovirus (aMPV) Challenge after Combined Administration of Newcastle Disease and aMPV Live Vaccines to Day-Old Turkeys.

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) are among the most impactful pathogens affecting the turkey industry. Since turkeys are routinely immunized against both diseases, the hatchery administration of the combined respective live vaccines would offer remarkable practical advantages. However, the compatibility of NDV and aMPV vaccines has not yet been experimentally demonstrated in this species. To address this issue, an aMPV subtype B live vaccine was administered to day-old poults either alone or in combination with one of two different ND vaccines. The birds were then challenged with a virulent aMPV subtype B strain, clinical signs were recorded and aMPV and NDV vaccine replication and humoral immune response were assessed. All results supported the absence of any interference hampering protection against aMPV, with no significant differences in terms of clinical scoring. In addition, the mean aMPV vaccine viral titers and antibody titers measured in the dual vaccinated groups were comparable or even higher than in the group vaccinated solely against aMPV. Lastly, based on the NDV viral and antibody titers, the combined aMPV and NDV vaccination does not seem to interfere with protection against NDV, although further studies involving an actual ND challenge will be necessary to fully demonstrate this hypothesis.

Analysis of the association between Epstein Barr virus infection and Hodgkin lymphoma

Epstein Barr virus plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Hodgkin lymphoma. However, the frequency of its association in Bangladeshi people has not been widely studied. The aim of this study was to determine the association of Epstein Barr virus association in Hodgkin Lymphoma through detection of Latent Membrane Protein 1 by immunohistochemistry and serum Epstein Barr virus viral capsid antigen IgG antibody titer by serology. This was a cross-sectional study in purposively selected 45 histologically diagnosed cases of Hodgkin lymphoma at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, during the period of March 2017 to December 2018. Latent membrane protein 1 was positive in 71.1% of cases of Hodgkin lymphoma. Among these positive cases, 96% of cases had significantly raised titer of serum Epstein Barr virus viral capsid antigen IgG antibody (P&lt;0.0001 obtained by Fisher’s Exact test), which had a male predominance. Mixed cellularity classical Hodgkin lymphoma showed the highest positivity.

Anti-varicella-zoster virus antibody titers and seroprotection status from before the first dose of varicella vaccination to before entering elementary school in one region in Japan.

We aimed to examine changes in anti-varicella-zoster virus (VZV) antibody titers and seroprotection status from before the first dose of vaccination to before 7years old entering elementary school in children who received the routine two-dose varicella vaccination. Participants were 37 healthy children who received the routine two-dose varicella vaccination at our hospital. A total of five serum samples per child were collected immediately before and 4-6weeks after each dose of the vaccination and in the year before entry to elementary school. We measured anti-VZV antibody titers by immune adherence hemagglutination (IAHA) method and glycoprotein-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (gpELISA). A positive antibody titer and the seroprotection level were set as ≥2-fold and ≥16-fold, respectively, for IAHA antibody and as ≥50 units and ≥105 units, respectively, for gpELISA-IgG antibody. The rates of IAHA antibody positivity in the five samples (in order of collection) were 0%, 65%, 38%, 100%, and 59%, and the rates of seroprotection were 0%, 43%, 8%, 100%, and 43%. The rates of gpELISA-IgG antibody positivity were 8%, 81%, 89%, 100%, and 100%, and the rates of seroprotection were 5%, 54%, 70%, 100%, and 89%. The mean IAHA antibody titer and mean gpELISA-IgG antibody titer before entering elementary school were both lower than the respective titers obtained after the second vaccination (both p<0.01). Routine two-dose varicella vaccination leads to good antibody production, but titers of acquired antibodies decrease before children enter elementary school.

RABIES DIAGNOSIS AND RESPONSE TO VACCINATION IN SOUTHERN TAMANDUA (TAMANDUA TETRADACTYLA).

Rabies has rarely been described in Xenarthra, and rabies vaccine response has not been documented. A southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) presented with nonspecific clinical signs and was euthanatized. Subsequently, immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR confirmed a rabies diagnosis. Following these tests, a group of eight captive tamanduas were vaccinated with a killed rabies vaccine, and titers were measured at the time of vaccination and 23 d later. One animal had day 0 titers suggestive of previous vaccination or exposure. All animals had detectable neutralizing rabies virus antibody titers after vaccination, but one animal failed to meet the World Organization for Animal Health's definition for adequate vaccination (≥0.5 IU/ml), and two other animals had low antibody titers (0.56 and 0.6 IU/ml). Rabies should be considered as a possible cause of illness in tamanduas, and rabies vaccination may be a useful preventative measure when anthropic interaction through medical care or ambassador roles is occurring.
