Electronic publications of archival institutions in the Republic of Kazakhstan and features of the developed Е-Doc Complex website

At the present time, electronic publication of archival documents is a modern high-profile way to use them and satisfy information needs of the society and researchers, as well as to popularize the documentary heritage. Publications of archival institutions on the Internet imply a multi-faceted practice, which includes development of search tools and reference mechanisms for collections, providing digital copies of archival documents on certain topics. Archival institutions create various types of electronic publications, namely databases, online exhibitions, collections of archival materials. Thus, currently, electronic archaeography is a promising research area due to the active advancements in the discipline’s practical applications. Publication of collections of archival documents is the most problematic issue among all types of documentary publication in electronic form. The purpose of the article is to analyze the main types of documentary publications provided by archival institutions in the digital environment and to reveal the specifics of the developed software product for publishing collections of archival materials. The research uses materials from the state archives of the Republic of Kazakhstan, regulatory and methodological documents. The results of the research include the following: an analysis of the academic discourse on the problems of publishing documentary heritage at the present stage was carried out; types of electronic publications and methods of their creation in the digital space were examined using the example of the state archives of the Republic of Kazakhstan; the E-Doc Complex website was developed as a separate software product for creating three types of collections of archival documents and thematic virtual exhibitions.

Virtual Exhibitions as a Tool for Promoting the Book Heritage of Tomsk State University Research Library in the Digital Space

The purpose of this article is to present the experience of the Department of Rare Books and Manuscripts of the Research Library of Tomsk State University in selecting a platform for virtual exhibitions and creating them. An overview of previous virtual exhibitions created with the participation of the department employees is provided, and a working algorithm for preparing them is outlined. Chosen by the library staff as a tool (the Tilda website builder) and the long read format allows to create an electronic resource based on a written narrative (biography, event description, etc.), including visual materials, multimedia, background information, and links to additional resources. This allows the authors of virtual exhibitions to provide detailed information about the subject, as well as various digitized or online resources hosted in the Electronic Library of Tomsk State University or the “PRO Siberia” platform.

The Application of Computer-Aided Film and Television Art Design Elements in Exhibition Space Design

Exhibition spaces are where human civilization is passed along, science and culture are disseminated, and new design concepts and techniques are assimilated to better them over time. Several offline and online exhibitions have been affected, stopped, postponed, or relocated online due to the effect of the outbreak. Presently, the development and enhancement of virtual exhibition halls is underway. Visitors to exposition halls are no longer limited to those from the immediate area; rather, an increasing number of people come from all over the nation and even from other countries. Due to this, pavilions that are equipped with remote tour features become very influential. The cloud exhibition of the film and television art design elements is the focus of this study, and it additionally builds a virtual display platform and presents 3D Imaging and Virtual Reality Technology (3DIVRT). Through the lens of 3D modeling technology and virtual exhibition hall building, this study first investigates the application trend and preliminary practice of digital design in virtual exhibition halls domestically and internationally. A comparison is made between virtual exhibition halls and conventional exhibition halls to summarize the benefits and possibilities of virtual exhibition halls. Second, it elaborates on the features of the 3D experience found in virtual exhibition halls from immersion, interaction, and conceivability perspectives. A fundamental examination and comparison of 3D modeling software is carried out, and Blender and Unity’s impact on the execution of the virtual exhibition hall is detailed. Synchronizing virtual reflection by computational capabilities, which will be identified with certain examples from across the globe, requires multimedia to be successful. Various methods to exhibit activity that uses computer-aided technologies are brought to light in this research study. According to the findings and conclusions, manual presentation and technical distinctions are how artistic and reflective features can be achieved.

POSSIBILITIES OF USING VR TECHNOLOGIES IN THE PROCESS OF TEACHING PSYCHOLOGY TO STUDENTS IN PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PEDAGOGICAL CLASSES

When organizing the activities of schoolchildren in specialized psychological and pedagogical classes, it is necessary to equip them with the most advanced methods, organizing professional tests and acquiring specifi c experience through immersion in a new digital reality. Purpose of the work is to study the possibilities of using VR technologies in the process of teaching psychology to students in psychological and pedagogical classes. Research methods include analysis, synthesis, generalization, and questioning. Sample consists of psychology teachers of  classes of psychological and pedagogical orientation in the city of Tula and the Tula region. Main results. Possible areas for the use of VR technologies in teaching psychology are highlighted: visualization of abstract psychological concepts, virtual excursions to psychological laboratories, acquaintance with specifi c psychologists of the past and present, virtual participation in psychological experiments, virtual games for training professionally signifi cant skills; immersion in school reality; trying oneself as a teacher; creating lesson projects; using immersive methods; visiting specialized virtual exhibitions, bookstores; virtual visit to the university, etc. Conclusion. Using the capabilities of VR technologies can signifi cantly affect the increase in the effi ciency of the learning process and the development of cognitive interests of students in psychological and pedagogical classes in the specialized discipline of psychology.

Yuan blue-and-white porcelain, a treasure of Chinese ceramic art, is renowned worldwide for its unique artistic value and cultural significance. With the continuous advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the artistic innovation of Yuan blue-and-white porcelain is experiencing new opportunities. AI technology not only improves the efficiency and quality of creation but also breaks through traditional physical limitations, enabling the creation of more diverse and creative artworks. By integrating augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies, AI provides new ways to display and interact with Yuan blue-and-white porcelain art. In non-physical artistic innovation, AI generates new designs through deep learning algorithms, breaking free from the constraints of traditional handmade processes and creating diverse works. Technologies like generative adversarial networks (GANs) can produce highly realistic Yuan blue-and-white designs, while convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can quickly generate design sketches, enhancing creative efficiency. AI can also optimize designs, improving the artistic quality and visual effects of the works.AR and VR technologies offer immersive experiences and interactivity for the audience. Through virtual exhibition spaces and AR applications, viewers can appreciate Yuan blue-and-white artworks as if they were physically present, enhancing interactivity and visual appeal. VR technology, through virtual exhibitions and other means, enhances the viewing experience and impact of the artworks. The application of AI technology in the non-physical artistic innovation of Yuan blue-and-white porcelain not only enhances creation efficiency and quality but also brings limitless possibilities to artistic creation. The combination of AR and VR technologies further enhances the visual appeal and interactivity of Yuan blue-and-white art. As technology continues to advance, AI will play an increasingly important role in the artistic innovation of Yuan blue-and-white porcelain, creating more splendid artworks.

Integration of Digital Repositories and Spatial Design within the Metaverse: the Evaluation of Features and Narratives to set Learning Environments on Cultural Heritage

Abstract. The Metaverse is rapidly advancing across cultural, professional, and service sectors, enhancing data compatibility and interaction. Its architectural design supports both visual interaction and information layers, characterising an ideal platform for the promotion of Digital Heritage. The digitisation of Cultural Heritage and the creation of Digital Repositories find complementarity in the Metaverse, which enables social interactions between Digital Heritage contents and virtual communities. This integration is pivotal for developing Learning Environments, where accessible virtual products can be combined with original digital storytelling and narratives.The paper presents methods and results from an Erasmus+ international school, which focused on using digital communication and 3D modelling tools to create immersive narratives on Mediterranean architectural modernity. Students from various Cultural Heritage disciplines designed virtual exhibitions within the Metaverse platform Spatial and open repository materials. The research concentrated on the application of Metaverse platforms for their spatial design and educational utility within the Heritage sector. The activities included developing digital narratives and interactive exhibitions enriched with multimedia data from digital repositories. The study discusses the limitations of customising visual materials, the importance of repository connections, user experience design, and the potential for future developments in Metaverse applications for Cultural Heritage learning environments and storytelling.

Expanding Understandings of Curatorial Practice Through Virtual Exhibition Building

This article reflects on the translation of gallery space into a virtually immersive experience in an era of remote access. Curators and scholars such as Mary Nooter Roberts, Susan Vogel, Carol Duncan, Tony Bennet, Stephen Greenblatt, Judith Mastai, and Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett have discussed the myriad of ways in which the experience of culturally significant objects and sites in person has been critical to the study of art and its history. Focusing on theories of curation and display, I utilize practice-based examples from six virtual reality (VR) exhibitions produced in three different institutional contexts: the International Journal of Digital Art History’s online gallery, the European Cultural Center’s Performance Art program, and the Digital Humanities program at the University of California, Los Angeles. By documenting and analyzing the extended reality (XR) methods employed and the methodological approaches to the digital curatorial work, I address some of the challenges and opportunities of presenting objects in virtual space, offering comparisons to those faced when building physical exhibitions. I also consider how digital modalities provide a distinctly different paradigm for epistemologies of art and culture that offer greater contextualized understandings and can reshape exhibition documentation and the teaching of curatorial practice and museum studies.

While proponents argue that virtual exhibitions and immersive art experiences democratize access to art and offer new avenues for artistic expression, critics have raised concerns about their impact on authenticity, viewer engagement, and art commercialization. Philosophical and cultural perspectives, including phenomenology and postmodern theory, shed light on the complexities of these art forms and their relationship with reality and simulation. This paper, further, examines the social and business implications of virtual exhibitions and immersive art experiences, noting their growing popularity and influence on the art market. It discusses the viewpoints of artists, critics, and scholars, both supportive and critical, regarding technology’s role in art and its effects on the viewer’s experience. Virtual exhibitions and immersive art experiences represent an evolving landscape in the art world, offering opportunities for innovation and debate. Their impact on the perception and consumption of art remains a subject of ongoing discussion. The paper concludes with a review of successful virtual exhibitions, highlighting their role in expanding access to art and cultural experiences globally.

Effectiveness of VR Technology in the Design of the Bali Megarupa V Virtual Exhibition

Virtual exhibitions offer a promising avenue for art appreciation in the digital age. However, limited research explores how these online spaces can foster emotional connections with art, a crucial aspect of the art experience. This study investigates the potential of immersive virtual reality (VR) to enhance engagement and emotional impact in virtual art exhibitions. Employing a multi-method approach combining literature review, user testing, and prototype development, the research identifies and evaluates design elements contributing to increased user engagement. This research employed a multi-method approach to understand how users engage with virtual art exhibitions. The study identified and evaluated the impact of specific design elements on user engagement by combining a literature review, user testing with a VR prototype, and subsequent analysis. The study focuses on critical elements like interactivity, personalization, storytelling, and multi-sensory experiences. User testing with 55 participants revealed the effectiveness of immersive design in fostering exploration, contemplation, and a sense of presence in the virtual space. This immersive design is the strategic integration of elements like interactivity, personalization, and storytelling within the VR environment. The research underscores the significance of immersive design, defined as the strategic integration of design elements to cultivate an emotional connection within a VR environment. This encompasses aspects like interactivity, personalization, and the incorporation of storytelling within the experience. Finally, the study offers practical recommendations for curators and designers to create virtual art experiences that resonate more deeply with audiences.

Real-time all-frequency global illumination with radiance caching

Global illumination (GI) plays a crucial role in rendering realistic results for virtual exhibitions, such as virtual car exhibitions. These scenarios usually include all-frequency bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDFs), although their geometries and light configurations may be static. Rendering all-frequency BRDFs in real time remains challenging due to the complex light transport. Existing approaches, including precomputed radiance transfer, light probes, and the most recent path-tracing-based approaches (ReSTIR PT), cannot satisfy both quality and performance requirements simultaneously. Herein, we propose a practical hybrid global illumination approach that combines ray tracing and cached GI by caching the incoming radiance with wavelets. Our approach can produce results close to those of offline renderers at the cost of only approximately 17 ms at runtime and is robust over all-frequency BRDFs. Our approach is designed for applications involving static lighting and geometries, such as virtual exhibitions.

Cultural heritage preservation in the digital age, harnessing artificial intelligence for the future: a bibliometric analysis

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the performance analysis, science mapping and future direction of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, applications, tools and software used to preserve, curate and predict the historical value of cultural heritage.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses the bibliometric research method and utilizes the Scopus database to gather data. The keywords used are “artificial intelligence” and “cultural heritage,” resulting in 718 data sets spanning from 2001 to 2023. The data is restricted to the years 2001−2023, is in English language and encompasses all types of documents, including conference papers, articles, book chapters, lecture notes, reviews and editorials.FindingsThe performance analysis of research on the use of AI to aid in the preservation of cultural heritage has been ongoing since 2001, and research in this area continues to grow. The countries contributing to this research include Italy, China, Greece, Spain and the UK, with Italy being the most prolific in terms of authored works. The research primarily falls under the disciplines of computer science, mathematics, engineering, social sciences and arts and humanities, respectively. Document types mainly consist of articles and proceedings. In the science mapping process, five clusters have been identified. These clusters are labeled according to the contributions of AI tools, software, apps and technology to cultural heritage preservation. The clusters include “conservation assessment,” “exhibition and visualization,” “software solutions,” “virtual exhibition” and “metadata and database.” The future direction of research lies in extended reality, which integrates virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR); virtual restoration and preservation; 3D printing; as well as the utilization of robotics, drones and the Internet of Things (IoT) for mapping, conserving and monitoring historical sites and cultural heritage sites.Practical implicationsThe cultural heritage institution can use this result as a source to develop AI-based strategic planning for curating, preservation, preventing and presenting cultural heritages. Researchers and academicians will get insight and deeper understanding on the research trend and use the interdisciplinary of AI and cultural heritage for expanding collaboration.Social implicationsThis study will help to reveal the trend and evolution of AI and cultural heritage. The finding also will fill the knowledge gap on the research on AI and cultural heritage.Originality/valueSome similar bibliometric studies have been conducted; however, there are still limited studies on contribution of AI to preserve cultural heritage in wider view. The value of this study is the cluster in which AI is used to preserve, curate, present and assess cultural heritages.

Educational and Cultural Role of Arab Virtual Document Exhibitions

Archival institutions are legally authorized to preserve educational, historical, or archival documents. Under this context, this research explores the role and interest of Arab archival institutions in displaying official documents on their websites. This study delves into focusing on the service provision of archival institutions by providing a virtual exhibition of their documents. Method of content analysis helps this research analyze the exhibition’s characteristics, for instance, display of document type, size, metadata availability, research tools and instruments, and engraving the possibility to copy, download, or print documents. The sample size of the research included ten archival institutions in Arab, including Oman, Jordan, UAE, Tunisia, KSA, Iraq, Qatar, Libya, and Morocco. These institutes were selected based on the presence of archival document websites that provide text documents, photographs, and visual recordings. The analysis of the research uncovered the aspect that Arab archival institutes differ in their interest in exhibiting virtual documents and the type/number of documents available to the public. However, almost 50% of archival institutes provide metadata for displayed documents. They provide advanced characteristics, such as enlargement of images, search, download, and sharing, available in 33.3% of virtual exhibitions. This study recommends the establishment of control to select displayed documents compatible with different users. Moreover, the display of images and documents should include descriptive data that explains the nature and context of document creation and preservation. Enhancing point cloud registration with transformer: cultural heritage protection of the Terracotta Warriors

Point cloud registration technology, by precisely aligning repair components with the original artifacts, can accurately record the geometric shape of cultural heritage objects and generate three-dimensional models, thereby providing reliable data support for the digital preservation, virtual exhibition, and restoration of cultural relics. However, traditional point cloud registration methods face challenges when dealing with cultural heritage data, including complex morphological and structural variations, sparsity and irregularity, and cross-dataset generalization. To address these challenges, this paper introduces an innovative method called Enhancing Point Cloud Registration with Transformer (EPCRT). Firstly, we utilize local geometric perception for positional encoding and combine it with a dynamic adjustment mechanism based on local density information and geometric angle encoding, enhancing the flexibility and adaptability of positional encoding to better characterize the complex local morphology and structural variations of artifacts. Additionally, we introduce a convolutional-Transformer hybrid module to facilitate interactive learning of artifact point cloud features, effectively achieving local–global feature fusion and enhancing detail capture capabilities, thus effectively handling the sparsity and irregularity of artifact point cloud data. We conduct extensive evaluations on the 3DMatch, ModelNet, KITTI, and MVP-RG datasets, and validate our method on the Terracotta Warriors cultural heritage dataset. The results demonstrate that our method has significant performance advantages in handling the complexity of morphological and structural variations, sparsity and irregularity of relic data, and cross-dataset generalization.

Exploring the role of virtual exhibition and media design rhetoric in learning history

This paper investigates the intersection of media and design literacies in learners becoming more competent in developing complex ideas within a history classroom. Drawing from multiliteracies, design literacy, and media literacy, this paper conceptualizes media design rhetoric as a process. It utilizes a virtual exhibition as a facilitator to deepen the understanding of propaganda. We accumulate qualitative data from artifacts created by 10th and 11th graders (age range: 15–17) in a history classroom within a suburban high school in Western Canada, with written reflections on their artifacts. artefact analysis is followed by thematic and subject analysis in NVivo 12. Results show that media design rhetoric supports learners in deepening their understanding of propaganda, critically reading media, and creatively communicating messages. Results suggest that virtual exhibitions can be pivotal in creating new artifacts with complex but interest-driven topics. This research introduces media design rhetoric as a bridging concept (between multiliteracies, design literacy, and media literacy) and situates virtual exhibitions as a facilitator for developing complex ideas. This research highlights the significance of critical thinking and creativity in the media design rhetoric, as students critically engaged with historical content and creatively adapted it to modern contexts.

Virtual Reality in Samarkand’s Silk Road Museums

This study explores the potential of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies to extend the reach of museum exhibitions in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, by developing virtual exhibits through collaboration between Lublin University of Technology and local museums. The study involved creating a virtual exhibition of 3D-scanned artefacts from three Samarkand museums. An exploratory survey was conducted with museum professionals and Generation Z individuals to assess VR’s complementary role to traditional exhibitions. Findings. The survey revealed broad acceptance of VR as a supplementary tool, with 79% of professionals endorsing it. Generation Z participants showed high engagement, with VR enhancing their interest in traditional visits. VR technologies significantly improve access to Silk Road heritage, providing an immersive, interactive experience that traditional methods cannot offer alone. The findings underscore VR’s potential to attract diverse audiences, particularly tech-savvy younger generations. Integrating VR into museum exhibitions can enhance cultural heritage dissemination, support educational initiatives, and foster a greater global appreciation for Silk Road artifacts. Future research should explore long-term impacts on visitor behavior and museum attendance.

Digital Preservation Strategies for Cultural Heritage in North Africa in Egypt

Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the digital preservation strategies for cultural heritage in North Africa. Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: Digital preservation strategies for cultural heritage in North Africa emphasize robust technological infrastructure, collaborative initiatives among stakeholders, capacity building for local professionals in digital curation and metadata management, effective policy frameworks addressing copyright and intellectual property issues, and public engagement through cultural education and virtual exhibitions. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Social constructivism, information science theory & postcolonial theory may be used to anchor future studies on digital preservation strategies for cultural heritage in North Africa. Establish comprehensive guidelines for digital preservation that encompass diverse cultural heritage materials, including manuscripts, archaeological artifacts, oral histories, and visual arts. Advocate for the development of integrated national and regional policies on digital preservation, supported by sustainable funding mechanisms and public-private partnerships.

Teaching Visual Arts Using Virtual Exhibitions: An Investigation of Student Usage and Impact on Learning

Amid the imperative call for using digital artwork images and e-learning activities in planning and delivering the art curriculum heightened by rapid technological development and COVID-19, we propose a visual arts teacher–curator pedagogy and investigate its effectiveness in Hong Kong’s primary and secondary schools. The pedagogy is set out to empower visual arts teachers to assume the role of “digital museum curators” and to facilitate student learning using virtual exhibitions. Design-based research was the methodology adopted for the study. Six teachers and 331 students participated in the study in the 2021–2022 academic year. The study, which examined the effectiveness of the proposed pedagogy, revealed a substantial improvement in student learning, including (1) motivating students toward self-directed and active learning, (2) stimulating artmaking ideas and skills, and (3) enhancing students’ confidence through peer learning.
