Modeling of the minimum number of nodes of a private university cloud virtualization cluster

Cloud technologies and computing have long been part of the practice of leading universities. However, we note that the problem of estimating the optimal number of necessary nodes of a virtualization cluster still remains relevant. When designing the virtual desktop infrastructure (or VDI) of a university private cloud, developers face many technical challenges. One of them is to estimate the minimum required number of virtualization cluster nodes on which users’ virtual machines (VMs) are hosted. These VMs, for example, are used by students and teachers to complete training tasks. Another task that arises in the development of the VDI configuration is the task of algorithmizing the placement of the VM in the computer network (СN) of the university. In this case, the optimal placement of the VM allows you to mini- mize the number of nodes of the aircraft. And this does not affect the functionality of VDI in the sun. This approach will help reduce the cost of a solution for using the infrastructure of a private university cloud. And the latter is important for universities. The article offers a model for estimating the required number of virtualization cluster nodes. The proposed model is based on a combined approach, which involves jointly solving the problem of optimal packaging and finding the configuration of server platforms of a private university cloud using a genetic algorithm.

Enhancing Virtual Desktop Infrastructure with Hybrid Cloud Environments and GPU Acceleration

This research paper focuses on the implementation and testing of a cloud based Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) that combines both cloud technology and GPU acceleration. The paper explores how various technologies, such, as Citrix Virtual Apps, Windows 11 Virtual Desktops, VMware vSphere and NetApp Storage can be integrated within a data center framework. CAFE and SOUP: Toward Adaptive VDI Workload Prediction

For Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) system, effective resource management is rather important where turning off spare virtual machines would help save running cost while maintaining sufficient virtual machines is essential to secure satisfactory user experience. Current VDI resource management strategy works in a passive manner by either reactively driving available capacity based on user demands or following manually configured schedules, which may lead to unnecessary running costs or unsatisfactory user experience. In this article, we propose a first attempt toward proactive VDI resource management, where two adaptive learning approaches for VDI workload prediction are proposed by learning from multi-grained historical features. For non-persistent desktop pool, based on the aggregation session count of pool-sharing users, the CAFE approach induces a pool-level workload predictive model by utilizing coarse-to-fine historical features extracted from aggregation workload data. For persistent desktop pool, based on the session connection status of individual users within the same pool, the SOUP approach induces user-level workload predictive model by incorporating encoded multi-grained features extracted from the logon behavior of individual users into an aggregation pool-level model. Extensive experiments on datasets of real VDI customers and electricity load evidently verify the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive approaches for VDI workload prediction as well as other workload prediction tasks.

Intentions of Students to Continue Using Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Expectation Confirmation Model Perspective

This predictive correlational study investigated the extent to which the expectation confirmation model can predict the intention of students to continue using virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). It also examined the relationships of satisfaction, perceived usefulness, and the confirmation level with the intention to continue using. The data were collected through an e-questionnaire in which 367 male and female students from the Institute of Public Administration (IPA) participated. They had previously used computer applications and software through the VDI for a number of their courses. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses. The results indicated that satisfaction and perceived usefulness were statistically significant in predicting that the students intended to continue VDI use. The confirmation level indirectly predicted the students’ intention to continue using VDI through its effect on satisfaction and perceived usefulness. The findings suggest that it is important to improve learning experiences through VDI to raise students’ satisfaction due to its impact on their intention to continue using VDI. The study also recommends that more research be conducted in the field of VDI to explore other factors that explain and contribute to continued VDI use.

Implementation of Data Synchronization Mechanism in Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

There are more and more applications and services of Cloud technology. Whether the government, enterprises or organizations, even everyone may have requirements of constructing cloud systems. To build the virtual cloud infrastructure VMware vSphere which is the leader of the information industry on virtual platforms can let users use Virtual Desktop Infrastructure by their mobile device. This study integrated some management programs such as Activity Directory, VMware vCenter, View connection server, VMware vSphere and used the shared storage system of FreeNAS to provide the cloud virtual environment to users. With the simple interface to manage, it successfully provides administrators to build Virtual Desktop Infrastructure faster. Users can use their own device to control the virtual desktop in a mobile classroom by VMware Horizon View or browser. Users can also use a shared storage system to be the information exchange platform. If you can connect to the Internet, you can use your own virtual desktop anywhere. Finally, the complete construction implements the combination of several operating systems and improves their performance to save lots of hardware cost. It also meets the social focus of carbon reduction and environment protection to achieve sustainable use.

BIM Environment Based Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Resource Optimization System for Small to Medium-Sized Architectural Design Firms

The recent fourth industrial revolution and the era of post-COVID-19 have ushered in a series of technologies including a 5G network and online systems, such as cloud computing technology. In other industries, extensive studies on cloud platforms utilizing such technologies were conducted. Although the cloud environment has taken on greater importance in the construction sector as well, it was used only for servers, failing to fully reflect the characteristics of the cloud system. In particular, compared to large architectural design firms, it is challenging for small to medium-sized design firms to establish a virtual cloud computing environment, which requires high capital investment. Targeting small to medium-sized architectural design firms in Korea, this study was conducted to introduce the VDI system, one of the cloud computing technologies that was recently used in other industries, to the BIM environment for initial application, operation, and management. Specifically, after an analysis was carried out to see if the VDI system utilized in other industries may resolve the hindrance faced with the BIM environment in the construction industry, the KBimVdi system was created based on an algorithm for estimating server scales by analyzing the VDI system suitable for the BIM work environment. This was followed by a validation of the KBimVdi system based on selected projects carried out by small to medium-sized architectural firms where BIM was used for design work.

VIRTUAL DESKTOP INFRASTRUCTURE IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION: AN APPLICATION OF HOME AND MOBILE COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT

This paper describes the implantation of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) to access the virtual laboratories that bring efficient use of resources as one of Al Balqa Applied University’s (BAU) Private Cloud services. The concept of desktop virtualization implements the sharing of capabilities utilizing legacy machines, which reduces the cost of infrastructure and introduces increased security, mobility, scalability, agility, and high availability. Al Balqa Applied University uses the service extensively to facilitate in/off-campus learning, teaching, and administrative activities and continue performing their work and education functions remotely to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.

State of the Art of Anti-Screen Capture Protection Techniques

The transition toward a contactless society has been rapidly progressing owing to the recent COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the IT environment of organizations and enterprises is changing rapidly;in particular, data security is expanding to the private sector. To adapt to these changes, organizations and companies have started to securely transfer confidential data to residential PCs and personally owned devices of employees working from home or from other locations. Therefore, organizations and companies are introducing streaming data services, such as the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) or cloud services, to securely connect internal and external networks. These methods have the advantage of providing data without the need to download to a third terminal;however, while the data are being streamed, attacks such as screen shooting or capturing are performed. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in prevention techniques against screen capture threats that may occur in a contactless environment. In this study, we analyze possible screen capture methods in a PC and a mobile phone environment and present techniques that can protect the screens against specific attack methods. The detection and defense for screen capture of PC applications on Windows OS and Mac OS could be solved with a single agent using our proposed techniques. Screen capture of mobile devices can be prevented by applying our proposed techniques on Android and iOS. © 2021 KSII.

Guaranteed Bang for the Buck: Modeling VDI Applications to Identify Storage Requirements

In the cloud environment, most services are provided by virtual machines (VMs). Identifying storage requirements of VMs is challenging, but it is essential for good user experiences while optimizing use of storage resources. Determining the storage configuration necessary to support and satisfy VMs first requires an accurate description of the VM configurations, and the problem is further exacerbated by the diversity and special characteristics of the VMs. In this paper, we study Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), a prevalent and complicated VM application, to identify and characterize storage requirements of VMs and determine how to meet such requirements with minimal storage resources and cost. We first create a model to describe the behavior of VDI, and we collect real VDI traces to populate this model. The model allows us to identify the storage requirements of VDI and determine the potential bottlenecks of a given storage configuration. Based on this information, we can tell what capacity and minimum capability a storage configuration needs in order to support and satisfy given VDI configurations. We show that our model can describe more fine-grained VM behavior varying with time and virtual disk types compared with the rules of thumb currently used in industry.

Protocol-agnostic method for monitoring interactivity time in remote desktop services

The growing trend of desktop virtualisation has facilitated the reduction of management costs associated with traditional systems and access to services from devices with different capabilities. However, desktop virtualisation requires controlling the interactivity provided by an infrastructure and the quality of experience perceived by users. This paper proposes a methodology for the quantification of interactivity based on the measurement of the time elapsed between user interactions and the associated responses. Measurement error is controlled using a novel mechanism for the detection of screen changes, which can lead to erroneous measurements. Finally, a campus virtual desktop infrastructure and the Amazon WorkSpaces solution are analysed using this proposed methodology. The results demonstrate the importance of the location of virtualisation infrastructure and the types of protocols used by remote desktop services.

We present a new capability for legacy applications called edge-based virtual desktop infrastructure (EdgeVDI), and discuss example use cases that it enables.

On Construction and Performance Evaluation of a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure With GPU Accelerated

More engaging and accessible solutions that offer outstanding user experience are needed. The virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is the first user access part of the cloud. Therefore, the performance of the VDI has a significant influence on the network. The graphics processing unit (GPU) can accelerate performance by assigning each virtual machine a dedicated GPU for performance-boosting to improve the user experience. In this paper, we propose a high-performance VDI using an integration of a GPU on OpenStack with a PCI pass-through. It might have certain benefits over using virtualized hardware, such as lower latency, better performance, and more functionality. The evaluation and comparison of the computer processing unit (CPU) and GPU are presented among the different benchmark tools.

Ensuring the integrity of transportation and logistics during the COVID-19 pandemic

The unexpected, rapid spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus around the globe has almost completely paralyzed multiple industries in most nations. At the same time, even during lockdowns, many countries did practically no attempt to restrict road traffic, fearing that this would freeze the shipping of vital goods, primarily food. As a result, shipping by road transport has only been impacted by the drop in consumer demand. Nonetheless, shipping companies’ operations have undergone drastic changes due to the quarantine. Sending some of the personnel to work from home has been one of these changes. On the one hand, this has exacerbated certain risks. On the other hand, when personnel works from home, this helps reduce spending and may even be considered as a way of enforcing the lean transportation principle. The insights gained from remote controllers’ efforts to keep road shipping safe and reliable during the COVID-19 pandemic may find successful uses as a step towards greater shipping efficiency, not only in emergencies, but under other circumstances as well. In this paper, we consider the capabilities of a virtual machine-based architecture for a road shipping control system. We also elaborate on the practical results of deploying such an architecture. Our study proves that our concept of a geographically dispersed shipping company that uses a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and Process Mining has the means to ensure productive remote controller operation, including operation through low-bandwidth Internet channels, and guarantees the integrity and confidentiality of the relevant business information.

Infrastructure Revisited: An Ethnographic Case Study of how Health Information Infrastructure Shapes and Constrains Technological Innovation.

BackgroundStar defined infrastructure as something other things “run on”; it consists mainly of “boring things.” Building on her classic 1999 paper, and acknowledging contemporary developments in technologies, services, and systems, we developed a new theorization of health information infrastructure with five defining characteristics: (1) a material scaffolding, backgrounded when working and foregrounded upon breakdown; (2) embedded, relational, and emergent; (3) collectively learned, known, and practiced (through technologically-supported cooperative work and organizational routines); (4) patchworked (incrementally built and fixed) and path-dependent (influenced by technical and socio-cultural legacies); and (5) institutionally supported and sustained (eg, embodying standards negotiated and overseen by regulatory and professional bodies).ObjectiveOur theoretical objective was, in a health care context, to explore what information infrastructure is and how it shapes, supports, and constrains technological innovation. Our empirical objective was to examine the challenges of implementing and scaling up video consultation services.MethodsIn this naturalistic case study, we collected a total of 450 hours of ethnographic observations, over 100 interviews, and about 100 local and national documents over 54 months. Sensitized by the characteristics of infrastructure, we sought examples of infrastructural challenges that had slowed implementation and scale-up. We arranged data thematically to gain familiarity before undertaking an analysis informed by strong structuration, neo-institutional, and social practice theories, together with elements taken from the actor-network theory.ResultsWe documented scale-up challenges at three different sites in our original case study, all of which relate to “boring things”: the selection of a platform to support video-mediated consultations, the replacement of desktop computers with virtual desktop infrastructure profiles, and problems with call quality. In a fourth subcase, configuration issues with licensed video-conferencing software limited the spread of the innovation to another UK site. In all four subcases, several features of infrastructure were evident, including: (1) intricacy and lack of dependability of the installed base; (2) interdependencies of technologies, processes, and routines, such that a fix for one problem generated problems elsewhere in the system; (3) the inertia of established routines; (4) the constraining (and, occasionally, enabling) effect of legacy systems; and (5) delays and conflicts relating to clinical quality and safety standards.ConclusionsInnovators and change agents who wish to introduce new technologies in health services and systems should: (1) attend to materiality (eg, expect bugs and breakdowns, and prioritize basic dependability over advanced functionality); (2) take a systemic and relational view of technologies (versus as an isolated tool or function); (3) remember that technology-supported work is cooperative and embedded in organizational routines, which are further embedded in other routines; (4) innovate incrementally, taking account of technological and socio-cultural legacies; (5) consider standards but also where these standards come from and what priorities and interests they represent; and (6) seek to create leeway for these standards to be adapted to different local conditions.

Remote system performance analysis of the virtual applications and virtual desktops by using Parallels 2X RAS technique

The fast spread of computer networks and broadband Internet access and also the development of different operating systems make possible the use of different virtualization techniques. Virtualization techniques provide efficient IT solutions in corporate and educational sectors. We present an original structural framework for which the effect of virtualization technology are measured, based on a real campus wide deployment. The Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) provides academic members access to virtual applications on and off-campus for easy convenient access to academic resources in a server in data centre. In this paper, we present, at the beginning, a comparative performance analysis of Remote applications and Desktop Virtualization based on parallels 2X RAS versus Microsoft RDS. We introduce system architecture for the two tested scenario and test environment with Experiment Setup and implementations. Also, this paper provides analysis and implementation on the perceived and categorical perspectives on the usefulness, effectiveness and values of this technology in an academic environment. The main conclusions of the paper Indicated that students and academic staff have generally improved a remote accessibility to their course documents and academic materials virtually, using their own devices of different platforms which enabled them to perform course work more effectively resulting in improved system reliability, availability and scalability.

CAFE: Adaptive VDI Workload Prediction with Multi-Grained Features

Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is a virtualization technology that hosts desktop operating system on centralized server in a data center of private or public cloud. Effective resource management is of crucial importance for VDI customers, where maintaining sufficient virtual machines helps guarantee satisfactory user experience while turning off spare virtual machines helps save running cost. Generally, existing techniques work in passive manner by either driving available capacity reactively or configuring management schedules manually. In this paper, a novel proactive resource management approach is proposed which aims to predict VDI pool workload adaptively by utilizing CoArse to Fine historical dEscriptive (CAFE) features. Specifically, aggregate session count from pool end users serves as the basis for workload measurement and predictive model induction. Extensive experiments on real VDI customers data sets clearly validate the effectiveness of multi-grained features for VDI workload prediction. Furthermore, practical insights identified in our VDI data analytics are also discussed.
