Social Support as a Catalyst for Environmental Awareness in Indonesia

General Background: Environmental awareness is crucial for communities to preserve ecosystems and prevent environmental degradation. Social support can play a significant role in fostering this awareness. Specific Background: In rural communities like Tutur village, Pasuruan regency, environmental awareness and social support are often interconnected. However, the extent to which social support influences environmental awareness remains underexplored. Knowledge Gap: While studies have examined environmental education and awareness, few have investigated the role of social support as a driving factor in increasing environmental responsibility in village settings. Aims: This study aims to examine the influence of social support on environmental awareness among the residents of Tutur village, focusing on the relationship between these variables using quantitative methods. Results: The findings from simple linear regression analysis reveal that social support has a significant effect on environmental awareness, indicating that residents with stronger social ties exhibit higher levels of concern and action toward environmental preservation. Novelty: This study offers a novel insight by quantitatively demonstrating the direct relationship between social support and environmental awareness in rural communities, highlighting social dynamics as a key factor in environmental education. Implications: The results suggest that enhancing social support networks through community-driven initiatives can significantly improve environmental consciousness and foster sustainable tourism development, particularly in rural areas like Tutur village. This study provides a basis for future research on integrating social support frameworks into environmental sustainability strategies, particularly in regions with strong communal ties. Revitalising indigenous sports in India: an examination of their impact on fostering social and character development of children

ABSTRACT Indigenous sports and games in India, deeply entrenched in traditional practices and cultural heritage, offer diverse physical activities for individuals, particularly children. This review explores the historical origins and contemporary significance of Traditional Indigenous Sporting Games (TISG), emphasising their role in promoting holistic health and character development. This paper represents timeless and nationwide popular traditional indigenous sporting games like Kancha (marbles), Spinning Top, Hide and Seek, Hopscotch, Thoda, Gatka, Kalarippayattu, and Silambam (a kind of staff fencing), offering a unique blend of physical fitness and character cultivation. These activities, often played in open spaces and village settings, provide children with opportunities to engage in physical play while honing essential skills such as coordination, teamwork, and resilience. Embedded within these indigenous sports are fundamental values that echo the moral teachings found in ancient Indian texts like the Vedas, Upanishads, Ramayana, and Mahabharata. By embracing and revitalising these indigenous sports, a community can nurture a sense of cultural identity and pride while simultaneously promoting the holistic development of children. Through active participation in these traditional indigenous games, children not only improve their physical fitness but also gain valuable character-building experiences that contribute to their overall well-being and personal growth.

The Spatial Analysis of Traditional Rice Terrace Villages in Bali, Indonesia and Ifugao, Philippines Using a Syntactic Approach

Abstract Villages, characterized by rice terraces (RT) and traditional settlements, are cultural landscape heritage that necessitates conservation. These spaces play a crucial role in maintaining environmental, historical, economic values and fostering identify formation and evolution of communities. As such, this research, designed as a comparative study, investigated the spatial characteristics and arrangement of traditional rice terrace (RT) villages in Indonesia and the Philippines, focusing on Tegallalang and Batad. Employing a syntactic approach and Lynch’s imageability framework, the study analyzed paths, edges, districts, and landmarks to assess RT villages. Data integration included GIS analysis, semi-structured interviews, field visits, and literature reviews. Findings revealed distinct spatial features influenced by individual history and sociocultural context, emphasizing the interplay between geography, culture, and village structure. Additionally, the study highlights the impact of village layout on broader aspects such as tourism dynamics and economic activities. Insights from Tegallalang and Batad inform strategies for cultural heritage conservation, community empowerment, and environmental sustainability in village settings. Ultimately, this research contributes to understanding rural communities and their landscape dynamics, informing village planning for long-term sustainability.

A HOLISTIC INQUIRY INTO RISK COMMUNICATION DYNAMICS: YOUTH-LED INITIATIVES AND SOCIETAL ENGAGEMENT IN SURABAYA'S RURAL LANDSCAPES

The overarching aim of this community service program is to contribute significantly to the understanding of risk communication dynamics and its profound implications within broader societal contexts. Beyond mere dissemination of information, this initiative serves as a comprehensive study, delving into the intricate web of societal attitudes, perceptions, and the intricate pathways through which information traverses within communities. Central to this endeavor is the creation of educational videos geared towards enhancing community awareness, particularly targeting the youth in rural village settings. These videos, crafted by local youth in Surabaya, encapsulate not only informative content but also culturally nuanced messaging that resonates deeply with the intended audience. Methodologically, the program adopts a multifaceted approach. Firstly, it involves the online dissemination of educational materials, strategically targeting bustling areas in Surabaya, notably Petemon and Kaliasin. Secondly, it encompasses Focus Group Discussions with children, providing invaluable insights into their utilization of smartphone cameras and their perceptions of media content. Lastly, the program includes a hands-on video workshop, empowering children to actively participate in the creation of visual narratives, thereby fostering a sense of ownership and agency. The duration of the research spanned a comprehensive 15-day period, allowing for in-depth exploration and analysis of community dynamics and perceptions. The outcomes of these community engagement activities unveil nuanced layers of perception and understanding regarding COVID-19 prevention programs, particularly the government's vaccination efforts. Notably, there emerges a preference for peer-driven engagement, with individuals opting to involve those within their immediate social circles. Within this communal framework, the created videos serve as powerful tools, employing a blend of straightforward visual storytelling and everyday language to effectively communicate crucial messages, thereby fostering a sense of collective responsibility and empowerment within the community.

Challenges in Supporting Women's Recovery from Sexual Violence in a Village Setting: Addressing Social Structures in Gampong Meurandeh Dayah, Aceh

<p>This article examines the structural challenges in the formation of advocacy policies for female victims of sexual violence in Gampong Meurandeh, Langsa City, Aceh. The data collection process utilized the participatory action research method over four months. Drawing upon social structure theory, the article argues that the causes of sexual violence in rural communities are not only rooted in knowledge and culture but also in the social structures that operate within these communities. The research findings indicate that the reluctance of village authorities to engage in the formulation of sexual violence policies is impeding the successful execution of sexual violence prevention programs. The article highlights two factors that hinder the prevention of sexual violence in Gampong Meurandeh Dayah. Firstly, the lack of female representation in the village government Secondly, support for victims of sexual violence is not a primary concern in the village government's policies. The article concludes that sexual violence prevention programs implemented in patriarchal communities require not only a change in public knowledge but also interventions at the structural level.</p>

Farmer experiences with goat raising in Lao PDR: implications for improving husbandry and sustaining viable systems

ABSTRACT Goat raising has increased in Lao People’s Democratic Republic due to meat demand from Vietnam. Goat production is low input using free grazing and minimal husbandry. Technical constraints are well known but socio-cultural contexts are poorly understood. This paper describes qualitative research on farmer’s motivations, experiences and learning pathways, to improve goat husbandry. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 smallholder goat farmers in Lao’s South-Central province of Savannakhet. The interviews revealed that farmers relied on their experiences and observations of goat raising in their communities to make their management decisions. Trial and error was a valued learning strategy. Farmers took guidance from the exchange of goat raising experiences with other goat farmers and preferred participatory learning that fostered discussion in familiar village settings. Lao smallholder goat farming systems are a product of compromise across a number of resources. Project interventions that required low investments of labour, land or capital were most readily implemented and adapted by farmers. This study questions the assumption that project interventions are inherently optimal and beneficial for smallholder farming systems. Recommendations propose how farmer’s experiences, constraints and preferences can be incorporated into development approaches to ensure management system changes reflect the desires of smallholder farmers.

Multiplicities and Contingency: Rethinking ‘Popular Buddhism’, Religious Practices and Ontologies in Thailand

AbstractThis paper reconsiders explanations of ‘popular’ Buddhism in Thailand initiated in mid-twentieth century anthropological definitions of vernacular articulations of religiosity in village settings. Buddhist localism, in its various manifestations, is seen to contrast with a doctrinal or literate ‘great’ monastic tradition. In this persisting ethnographic argument, an actor may draw randomly on various syncretic elements of their religiosity according to circumstances (an historical complexity which is sourced in a mix of Sinhalese-sourced Buddhism, animism including magic, and folk Brahmanism). It is therefore not wholly or consistently one, but substantively divided into several strands. This long-standing position is problematic as the paper shows. There are multiple coextensive Buddhism/s (plural) within the Greater Theravada tradition, which emerge from an identification of the actors themselves with the one, not the many, as one-unitary-Buddhists. I theorise using a general framework of Meillassoux’s discussion on contingency and, by way of contrast, taking Deleuzian ideas on multiplicity. It is grounded on an understanding of popular or organic lived religion sourced in the early counter-enlightenment or radical enlightenment thinking of Giambattista Vico. Here, it is argued that in Thailand villagers would identify cosmologically as the one, not as the many (in a sense as in the assemblages or varieties of religious practices detached from the totality of the cosmological unitary one). Understanding the creative processes behind cosmological multiplicities is a starting point, with the notion that within specific cultural forms we are faced with a multiplicity of definitions and things to observe, as in an understanding of the varieties of lived Buddhism. The essay is based on an ethnographic assessment from over three decades of field research among ethnic Thai Buddhists at various modalities and settings, and in framing these vernacular religious practices and their ontologies. The essay does not deal directly with specific ethnographic case studies; instead, it is intended as retheorising representations of ‘Popular Buddhism’ in Thailand as based on early scholarship since the 1960s (where Buddhism is constituted as three or more distinctive but intertwined religious strands).

Enhancing E-Government Implementation Through Website Management

This study explores the effectiveness of village website management in facilitating e-government implementation within Kebarepan Village, Plumbon District, Cirebon Regency. It assesses four key indicators of program effectiveness: program success, target success, satisfaction with the program, and levels of input and output. Employing a qualitative or naturalistic approach, data were collected through literature review and field study, incorporating observations, interviews, and documentation. Analysis indicates that village website management significantly enhances e-government implementation effectiveness, encompassing program success, target success, satisfaction with the program, and levels of input and output. However, certain obstacles hinder the complete realization of effectiveness. This study enhances comprehension of e-government implementation at the village level and provides insights into addressing existing barriers. The implications of these findings can inform policymakers and practitioners in optimizing e-government effectiveness within village settings.

Adoption and implementation of an inclusive business integration model in the packaging of the tourist villages in the west of Bali Indonesia

<p>This research aims to analyze the application of the inclusive business integration model developed in Cepaka Village for the development of tourism village packaging. The model is intended to guarantee that the growth of tourism villages is both economically advantageous and socially and environmentally sustainable. This study examines the implementation of the model in tourism villages located in the western region of Bali. It assesses the effects of this implementation on the empowerment of the local community, the preservation of cultural heritage, and the economic development of the villages. This study is significant due to Bali’s recognition as a global tourism hotspot, where tourism villages possess immense possibilities but frequently encounter obstacles such as scarce resources, insufficient infrastructure, and the necessity for efficient marketing tactics. This study employs qualitative methods to analyze the effects of incorporating inclusive business practices on the development of tourism villages. Specifically, it investigates the influence on income generation, the equitable distribution of economic advantages among the community, and the preservation of cultural and environmental aspects. A total of 27 key informants, consisting of the chairman, vice chairman, and a member of the village management, were selected from 7 tourism villages in West Bali. The Jembrana Regency Tourism Office organized focus group discussions following a series of comprehensive interviews conducted in stages. Additionally, a crucial source of information was a proficient digital marketing specialist who aided in the process of digitalizing the marketing strategies for tourist villages in West Bali. The study’s findings indicate that the proposed model successfully integrates village economic activities with cultural and environmental aspects, resulting in a distinctive and genuine tourism experience in seven tourist villages in West Bali. The findings of this study are anticipated to offer valuable perspectives for policymakers, tourism professionals, and rural communities on how to maximize the opportunities of tourism villages in a comprehensive and environmentally friendly way. The research emphasizes the significance of adopting digital technology in marketing and distributing village tourism products. It also identifies the opportunities and challenges of implementing inclusive business models in Bali’s tourism village setting.</p>

Exploring learning needs for community education among older adults from the perspective of active aging: a qualitative study in rural China

ABSTRACT Older adults are often excluded from the category of active learning populations in many cultures. However, Active Aging (AA) Framework highlights that regular participation of older adults in community education activities can enhance opportunities for social participation, thereby promoting successful aging within this demographic. This descriptive qualitative study aimed to explore the learning needs for community education among older adults in rural China from the perspective of active aging. Purposive sampling method and maximum difference sampling were used to recruit 18 participants aged 60 and over. Four core themes emerged from the analysis: the need for health knowledge, the need for participating in social activities, the need for social security knowledge, and the need for educational methods. The findings of this study confirm that older adults in a Chinese village setting have diverse learning needs for community education. Awareness of these needs can assist policy makers and healthcare workers in providing tailored curricula and intervention measures to meet their learning needs.

Designing an Alternative, Community Integrated Model of Residential Aged Care for People Living with Dementia: Nominal Group Technique and Thematic Analysis.

Small-scale models of dementia care are a potential solution to deinstitutionalize residential aged care and have been associated with improved resident outcomes, including quality of life and reduced hospitalizations for people living with dementia. This study aimed to generate strategies and ideas on how homes for people living with dementia in a village setting within a suburban community, could be designed and function without external boundaries. In particular, how could residents of the village and members of the surrounding community access and engage safely and equitably so that interpersonal connections might be fostered? Twenty-one participants provided an idea for discussion at three Nominal Group Technique workshops, including people living with dementia, carers or former carers, academics, researchers, and clinicians. Discussion and ranking of ideas were facilitated in each workshop, and qualitative data were analyzed thematically. All three workshops highlighted the importance of a surrounding community invested in the village; education and dementia awareness training for staff, families, services, and the community; and the necessity for adequately and appropriately trained staff. An appropriate mission, vision, and values of the organization providing care were deemed essential to facilitate an inclusive culture that promotes dignity of risk and meaningful activities. These principles can be used to develop an improved model of residential aged care for people living with dementia. In particular, inclusivity, enablement, and dignity of risk are essential principles for residents to live meaningful lives free from stigma in a village without external boundaries.

Whose Knowledge Counts? A Reflection on the Field Narratives of Indigenous Health Knowledge and Practices

Today's world is increasingly recognizing the value of indigenous knowledge and expressing concern over its erosion. The protection of indigenous knowledge has been a global policy priority. This paper draws from a qualitative study conducted in a village setting in South-West Nepal and aims to reflect on the local narratives of the erosion of indigenous health knowledge and practices (IHKPs). Data were collected from healers, patients, and key informants using interview and observation methods and analyzed thematically. The findings are organized in five broad themes: (i) The context of socio-economic change, (ii) Existing health knowledge and practices, (iii) A decline in herbal literacy and home remedy, (iv) Market influence, increased healthcare options, and the shrinking role of traditional healers, and (v) Value perceptions of indigenous knowledge. Though IHKPs remain an inseparable part of community life, the field narratives strongly indicate a decline in home and community-based health practices and an intergenerational loss of herbal knowledge. Taking insight from the critical medical anthropological perspective, this paper discusses the micro-experience and macro-influence and argues for recognizing the health knowledge of indigenous communities. The recognition of knowledge should be a political and policy decision in protecting and promoting IHKPs.

Facilitating advance care planning in the thriving retirement village setting.

To investigate the factors that influence the adoption of advance care planning (ACP) in the retirement village setting. Purposive sampling was used to recruit residents and staff from a retirement village in a regional town in Victoria, Australia. Data collected in semistructured interviews were analysed through a process of reflexive thematic analysis and coded in NVivo. Twenty participants, comprising 14 residents and six staff, participated in the study. Four main themes arose, relating to awareness of the ACP process, the logistics of ACP, the role of service providers in facilitating ACP, and trust in the process. Most residents were unaware of the ACP process, but thought the transition into a retirement village was a good time to prepare instructions. Being given information on ACP was appropriate, but participants agreed that staff should not be involved in the actual ACP process. Finally, concerns were raised about the extent to which participants could trust that their wishes would be followed. Viewed along a continuum of care, the retirement village setting is an appropriate point at which to inform and support the ACP process, particularly for providers offering incremental support in response to changing client needs. These findings add to the relatively limited literature on ACP in this setting and could inform the development of strategies and resources to support residents in the ACP process. In so doing, they support best practice for facilitating ACP across care settings.

Introduction & Aim: Cancer is one of the common causes of death worldwide after heart disease. Home care of the terminal cancer patients is very difficult and various challenges during their terminal stage. Our goal is to give a pain free good quality of life in these advanced stage cancer patients. Objective of this study is to identify the main difficulties in achieving the above goal in a rural village setting in India.

Assessment of the 20L SODIS bucket household water treatment technology under field conditions in rural Malawi.

Two billion people worldwide consume unsafe drinking water. The problem is particularly pronounced in Sub-Saharan Africa, where more than a quarter of the population relies on unimproved surface water sources. Based on the principles of solar water disinfection (SODIS), a new household water treatment technology, the SODIS bucket, was developed to improve the microbial quality of water from these sources based on controlled tests in a laboratory setting. This study set out to evaluate the efficacy of the technology in a field setting, in rural communities in the Chikwawa District in southern Malawi. SODIS experiments were carried out in two different vessels (1-L PET bottles and 20-L polypropylene SODIS buckets), over three months using unprotected water sources normally used by community members. Vessels were exposed to direct sunlight for 8h per day in a village setting and were sampled at regular intervals to determine total coliforms, E. coli, turbidity, UV transmittance and UV dose. In these experiments, the SODIS bucket reached inactivation targets for E. coli (<1CFU/100mL) in two of seven experiments and for total coliforms in one of seven for total coliforms (<50CFU/100mL), despite having greater UV doses than were seen in the evaluation carried out under controlled conditions during the bucket's development. PET bottles reached inactivation targets for both E. coli and total coliforms in five of seven experiments. There was no single factor that could be identified as preventing adequate inactivation, but the role of organic matter, inconsistent nature of the water source, and vessel size, when coupled with organic matter, were identified as contributing factors. This study highlights the need for further prototyping to provide a suitable pre-treatment step for unprotected water sources, and the importance of field testing with real-life parameters to ensure new technologies are context appropriate.

Coverage of thematic area and methodologies in KVK Trainings : A study of KVK Gwalior

KVKs are engaged in conducting need based training programmes for all stakeholders in the field of agriculture on regular basis. KVK Gwalior has been working for the welfare of farming community in the district since last two decades through its intensive programmes. The present study was conducted on 209 ex-trainees of KVK Gwalior to assess the status of training programmes conducted by the scientists during last three years in terms of type of training programmes, coverage of thematic areas and perception of trainees on application of training methodologies. The data were collected from KVK records and through a pre-tested structured interview schedule by personal interviews. The results of the study reveal that maximum trainings were conducted under various themes of crop sciences followed by soil science and home science. The KVK has conducted maximum training for the farmers and farm women at their village settings in off campus mode by following lecture and demonstration methods.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION ON WASTE BANK TO FACILITATE SUSTAINABLE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN A VILLAGE

Community participation is required for managing solid waste. In Indonesia, community acceptance and participation in solid waste management are assessed by the presence of a waste bank at the village or neighborhood level. This study aimed to find out the source, economic potency, and handling system of solid waste in a village setting. This study took place at Ketapang Village, Mauk Sub District, Tangerang Regency, Indonesia. This study evaluated the community participation in the waste bank in Ketapang Village, which is called, Sakumis Bersalaman Waste Bank, and its potential to manage solid waste and generate some profits for the community. Some steps were performed to obtain the answer to the research question. A desk review was conducted to analyze the current waste management practice. Solid waste generation data was taken from an 8-days survey of the collected waste managed by the waste bank. In-depth interviews with 96 households were conducted to find out the potential of future waste bank development. It was found that from 1,988 households in Ketapang Village only 448 households participated in Sakumis Bersalaman Waste Bank. Based on the results of the analysis on the questionnaire which was distributed randomly to 182 households which are communities around the waste bank, it was found that 51.4% of respondents were not yet members of the waste bank. From this percentage, 94.4% of them declared that they want to be waste bank members. It is suggested to Shakumis Bersalaman Waste Bank to add members so that more waste will be recycled. In this way, the community will receive more benefits. From the results, we concluded that community participation through a waste bank, especially a better waste management system, is the potential way to increase the economic level of the village. Moreover, a waste bank could facilitate better solid waste management and produce a sustainable circular economy at the village level.
