Sustainable Tourism Development in Vietnam in the Current Period

Sustainable tourism development is currently an inevitable and effective direction for the tourism industry of Vietnam in particular and countries around the world in general. Vietnam has great potential for sustainable tourism development, from geographical location to natural and cultural resources. However, we also encounter many difficulties when developing sustainable tourism. This study points out the theoretical basis for sustainable tourism development; analyzes the current status of tourism development in Vietnam from 2015 to 2023; evaluates sustainable tourism development in Vietnam based on three aspects: Economy-Society-Environment; and examines the opportunities and challenges for sustainable tourism development in Vietnam. From that, several solutions will be proposed to develop sustainable tourism in Vietnam, making the tourism sector a key industry contributing to the ongoing development of Vietnam’s economy and society.

EFFECTS OF TOURIST MOTIVATION ON TOURISM PLANNING: A CASE STUDY OF DOMESTIC TOURISTS IN VIETNAM

Tourist motivations is a fundamental aspect of tourism planning as it enhances marketing efforts, product development, competitive positioning, and facilitates informed policymaking. As such, the present study provides accurate data with which to develop tourism planning in Vietnam based on the push motivation and pull motivation factors of Vietnamese domestic tourists. A quantitative method, namely, a questionnaire that was designed based on a self-desk study, expert opinions, and tour guide opinions, was used to collect data. Out of 670 questionnaire returned, 664 were ultimately usable for analysis. Descriptive analysis, factor analysis, and regression binary logistic models were then used to analyse the collected data. Seven important push motivation factors, namely, fulfilling prestige, fun and entertainment, escape, family and friends' togetherness, fulfilling spiritual needs, social relationships, and gaining knowledge were identified as important to Vietnamese domestic tourists. Meanwhile, the four important pull motivations for Vietnamese domestic tourists were events and activities; destination's facility, service, and trip sponsor; historical and cultural attractions; and natural resources. The findings can be used to develop tourism planning for domestic tourism in Vietnam. Destinations may use the insights on tourist motivations to attracts tourists and provide them with fulfilling experiences, which would, ultimately, contribute to the overall success and sustainability of Vietnam's tourism industry. Besides, the findings contribute to extant literature on the tourist motivations and tourist behaviours of Vietnamese domestic tourists. Lastly, the case study of Vietnam may serve as confirmation of the value of tourist motivations in tourism planning.

Law on environmental protection in tourist villages in the context of sustainable development of the tourism industry: A qualitative case study in Vietnam

After the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam's tourism industry welcomed 1.37 million international visitors. For the whole year 2023, the total number of international visitors will reach 12.6 million, nearly 3.5 times higher than in 2022, exceeding 57% of the original target (8 million) and reaching the adjusted target (12 -13 million views). In Vietnam, which a country which is undergoing economic development, this is a good sign for many workers and businesses, but it can create great pressure on environmental protection in many localities with tourist destinations. For example, as a destination attracting foreign tourists in Hoi A City, Quang Nam Province, Vietnam, the average amount of waste per day is nearly 100 tons; of which single-use plastic waste accounts for 15 - 23% (Thu Huong 2022). In order to prevent and minimize environmental pollution in tourist villages, the Goverment of Vietnam has issued many different documents such as: Decree No. 08/2022/ND-CP orienting no circulation after 2025 and using single-use plastic products and non-biodegradable plastic packaging in tourist areas and destinations; Decision No. 1316/QD-TTg Project to strengthen plastic waste management in Vietnam also points out that by 2025, 100% of tourist resorts and accommodation establishments will not use single-use plastic products and plastic bags which are so hard to decompose. In addition, the Government has also issued a set of criteria guiding environmental protection for tourism establishments and services in tourist areas and destinations, with instructions on minimizing plastic waste...However, around the issue of environmental protection in tourist villages in Vietnam, there are still problems that need to be solved. Through qualitative analysis method, the authors will analyze and propose solutions to remove regulations related to environmental protection mechanisms in tourist villages, aiming at sustainable development of the tourism industry towards a circular economy in the current period.

TourMapQA: using deep learning to develop a vietnam map-based tourism question answering system

<p>A question answering system is an important task in information retrieval. In recent years, this system has been interested in research and achieved outstanding results. In general, the output of the question answering is text. However, few studies have used a map as an answer to the question answering in Vietnam tourism. This paper introduces a question answering system integrating long short-term memory (LSTM) on the Vietnam map. Specifically, our model received an input question about any road in Vietnam. Then, the model used LSTM to indicate the coordinate of that road and called the Dijkstra algorithm to find the shortest path from the current location to the input road. Next, from the coordinate of the input road, we leveraged the LSTM model to identify sightseeing places that were on the shortest path. Finally, our system showed all the sightseeing places on the Vietnam map. Technically, the experimental results showed that our model’s performance was improved than previous models such as recurrent neural network, recurrent neural network with embedding, bidirectional recurrent neural network, and encoder-decoder recurrent neural network. Practically in terms, we applied our method to build a real application and compared it with Google Maps, and Bing Map.</p>

Tourism and the livelihood of the people of a residential community in Vietnam's tourism destination

This paper investigates the long-term relationship between factors affecting people's livelihoods after tourism investment in the tourism sub-region south of the Red River in Vietnam. The study used survey data and multiple linear regression econometric models from the three provinces of Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh and Thai Binh in the South Red River tourism sub-region from February 2023 to August 2023. Research results show that all eight factors are statistically significant and impact people's livelihoods. These seven factors have a positive impact while one factor harms their livelihoods. The three factors that have the most positive impact on livelihoods are (1) employment in the tourist destination, (2) local government policies and (3) agricultural land quality. The remaining factors such as (4) social culture, (5) infrastructure, (6) jobs outside tourist destinations and (7) social welfare have the same impact but less impact. Meanwhile, the factor that harms their livelihoods is the amount of agricultural land. In addition, employers in the tourism destination and local government policies continue to have an important impact on the livelihoods of the local population to assess the sustainability of the impact factors while less impact variables are excluded. The research results are the basis for proposing recommendations to diversify people's livelihoods after tourism develops in the southern Red River tourism sub-region.

Analyzing the causal relationship between exchange rate and international tourism in Vietnam

The impact of tourism on exchange rates, and vice versa, varies from country to country. This study empirically explores the causal relationship between exchange rates and international tourism in Vietnam. To examine this relationship, data on real exchange rates, foreign tourist arrivals, and real tourism revenue were extracted from the general statistical yearbook from 2000 to 2019. This paper explicitly highlights how exchange rates impact tourism under a government-controlled exchange rate regime. The results indicate a weak unidirectional causal relationship between foreign tourist arrival and real exchange rates. An increase in the real exchange rate increases short-term income but has a negative impact on long-term tourism revenue, while an increase in real tourism revenue reduces the real exchange rate in the short run but is stable in the long run. The research supports the perspective that maintaining a stable exchange rate attracts international tourists in the long term. Based on these findings, the Vietnamese government should adopt a cautious approach to price stabilization policies and encourage export-oriented industries to attract international tourists and promote tourism.

Solid waste circulation in tourism: a close study of accommodation service establishments in Hoi An City, Vietnam

ABSTRACT Tourism in Vietnam has become an important sector of the economy. Its environmental impacts include the quantity of waste generated. This study aims to assess the compositions of solid waste generated within diverse accommodation service establishments (ASEs) in Hoi An City to understand the differences across accommodation types and generating areas. The analysis indicated that most of the ASEs provided multiple services and waste components differed among generating areas. Initiatives for optimising the recovered material flows from waste at the ASEs were proposed. A decentralised-centralised hybrid model was suggested as a suitable approach for waste circulation in the accommodation service sector. The training of staff in the ASEs and tourists, as well, is crucial. So is the participation of social entities in the city’s waste management.

Sustainable Tourism and the Intention of Generation Z to Choose Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable tourism development is one of the sustainable development orientations. Sustainable tourism development can be impacted by promoting increased interest in and selection of sustainable tourism destinations. This study aims to clarify the concept of sustainable tourism, examining the current factors influencing the intention to choose sustainable tourism. The subjects of the study are young people of Generation Z, in order to enhance and promote the travel intentions of this potential target group in the future. Based on survey data collected from 314 Gen Z travelers, the factors affecting Gen Z's intention to choose sustainable tourism in Vietnam are clarified.

The Impact of Wellness Tourism Experiences on the Quality of Life of Tourists in Vietnam

The research clearly defines the concept of "wellness tourism" and introduces the concepts of "service experience," "perceived value," "experiential satisfaction," and "quality of life" of tourists to illustrate the current situation of tourism in Vietnam and establish a foundation for the development of wellness tourism. Through a survey of 503 domestic and international tourists, the authors demonstrate the positive impact of factors such as "personal experience" and "value motivation" on "customer satisfaction" and "improvement in quality of life" among participants in wellness tourism experiences. Furthermore, the study reveals that the majority of Vietnamese people are highly interested in and desire to improve both their physical and mental health, as domestic tourists tend to spend more and dedicate more time to wellness tourism compared to international tourists. Based on the research findings, the authors provide specific recommendations and solutions for tour operators offering wellness tourism services in Vietnam, as well as for the government in general, aiming to enhance the tourist experience and further develop this promising tourism sector in Vietnam in the future.

Spiritual Tourism Associated with Buddhism in Tuyen Quang City

Buddhism, originating from the teachings of the Buddha, is a widely practiced religion with a rich history spanning over 2,500 years. Its propagation was facilitated by Indian monks who disseminated its principles across various regions. In Vietnam, Buddhism was introduced as early as the first century CE through diverse modes of transportation including waterways and overland routes. Throughout the vicissitudes of history, Buddhism has established deep-rooted connections with Vietnamese religious culture, reflecting shared values and beliefs. Even in contemporary society, Buddhism continues to hold significance for both adherents and non-adherents in Vietnam, serving as a viable avenue for moral education and spiritual fulfillment. Religious tourism in Vietnam often centers around pagodas, which serve as centers for Buddhist practice, education, and cultural preservation. These sacred sites not only provide a venue for spiritual development but also serve as repositories of intangible cultural heritage. In this context, temple visits, which involve paying homage to Buddha and engaging in spiritual contemplation, represent a form of spiritual tourism that resonates deeply with Vietnamese cultural identity.

Vietnam tourism at the crossroads of socialism and market economy

ObjetivoVietnam ha pasado de ser un país devastado por la guerra a convertirse en un popular destino turístico. Aunque la investigación sobre el turismo en Vietnam ha crecido en número, ha faltado en gran medida un macroanálisis de la gobernanza y las políticas turísticas nacionales. Nuestra investigación ha enriquecido la literatura tanto de la economía política como del turismo tendiendo un puente entre ambas disciplinas al presentar las pautas de la gobernanza del turismo en la economía de transición de Vietnam.Diseño/metodología/enfoqueEste documento de síntesis ofrece un análisis sistemático del turismo de Vietnam que abarca la intensificación de la intervención gubernamental y los drásticos cambios del mercado en las últimas décadas. Los autores ofrecen un análisis cronológico del desarrollo del turismo junto con los principales giros políticos y económicos del país. Además, el análisis del contenido de los documentos políticos y el análisis del mercado turístico ilustran mejor las repercusiones de los sistemas político-económicos en la gobernanza y las políticas turísticas.ResultadosLas políticas turísticas y el análisis del mercado revelan un compromiso entre la centralización y la descentralización del sistema de gobernanza y un compromiso entre los objetivos económicos y sociales del desarrollo. Al equilibrar estos opuestos, la fuerza interna del mercado nacional y la resistencia de las comunidades y las empresas se convierten en activos clave para el crecimiento en unas circunstancias en las que la economía de mercado socialista sigue informando el desarrollo actual y futuro de la industria. The Impact of the Entrepreneurial Environment on Vietnamese Tourism Students' Entrepreneurial Intention

Purpose: Based on Social and Contextual cognitive theory, this study examines the impact of the entrepreneurial environment on the entrepreneurial intentions of students majoring in tourism in Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach: To standardize the conceptual framework of the study, the author began to use the qualitative research method to build hypotheses, then used the quantitative research method to conduct evaluation and assessment, and calculated the sample of the study with the SPSS software version 25. The study was conducted in the form of online survey research on the sample of 275 undergraduate students of tourism and hospitality management in 7 universities in Vietnam. Findings: The findings show that all six hypotheses of the study are accepted, and they have a positive impact on Vietnamese tourism students' entrepreneurial intention. Among them, the political environment is the most influential. Research limitations/implications: Despite efforts to standardize the conceptual framework, the complexity of the entrepreneurial environment may have led to incomplete consideration of relevant variables. The study primarily examined the impact of the entrepreneurial environment on intentions, not behaviors or outcomes, leaving room for future research to conduct a more comprehensive examination of the entrepreneurial process. These limitations offer opportunities for future research to enhance understanding of the intricate relationship between the entrepreneurial environment and intentions among tourism students in Vietnam. Originality/value: The research contributes to the understanding of entrepreneurial intentions among Vietnamese tourism students and provides practical insights for educators, policymakers, and industry stakeholders. Its focus on the entrepreneurial environment and application of relevant theoretical frameworks position it as a meaningful contribution to the fields of entrepreneurship and tourism education.

Third Age Tourism in Vietnam: Preferences and Limitations

Introduction. Global demographics are experiencing a significant transition to an aging population. This transition creates various opportunities to provide products and services targeting seniors, including tourism products and services in Vietnam. However, with the current state of affairs, the tourism sector still lacks products and services aimed at older people, so identifying the features and prospects for the development of tourism for third-age people in Vietnam from an integrated approach became the main purpose of the study. Methods. To achieve this goal, an inductive approach based on the interpretivist paradigm was used to study various aspects of human behavior presented in the works of the authors. The development data of tourists of the third age, their expenses and preferences were analyzed using a statistical method. Results. The result was the goals of tourism development and preferences for third-age people in Vietnam identified in the authors’ works. The analysis of statistical data showed the main limitations and trends that contribute to the tourist holidays of the older generation. Conclusion. The development of tourism for the elderly is now being actively considered in many developed countries, but in Vietnam it has just begun to attract attention from business and government.

Factors affecting marketing on sustainable tourism development in the coastal provinces of Vietnam

The article "Marketing factors affecting sustainable tourism development in Vietnam's coastal provinces" focuses on researching the role of Marketing in promoting sustainable tourism in Vietnam's coastal provinces. The study aims to identify and evaluate the impact of marketing factors such as tourism products, prices, distribution channels, marketing communications, people, processes and physical evidence on the sustainable development of the industry travel in this area. Through the use of primary and secondary data collection methods, along with descriptive statistical analysis techniques, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and multivariate regression analysis, the study has clarify the current status of sustainable tourism development in Vietnam's coastal provinces and point out marketing factors that have a significant influence on this process. Based on the research results, the article proposes practical recommendations for tourism managers and businesses to orient and optimize marketing activities to promote sustainable tourism. At the same time, the article also frankly points out the limitations of the research and opens up new research directions for the future.

Factors Affecting the Development of Community-Based Night Tourism in Vietnam: A Case Study in Sapa-Lao Cai

This study identifies the factors affecting the development of community-based night tourism, thereby making recommendations to develop community-based night tourism in a sustainable way. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) combined with linear regression was performed on a survey of 391 tourists who had been to Sapa. Research results show that there are 5 influencing factors: (i) environment, (ii) culture and services, (iii) infrastructure, (iv) security and safety, (v) main tourism development policy. In particular, the factors "security, safety" and "infrastructure" have the strongest influence on the development of community-based night tourism in Sapa. On that basis, the study proposes some recommendations to develop community-based night tourism in a sustainable way.

Developing Tourism in Vietnam Under the Trend of Green Growth and Green Investment

The global tourism industry is waking up to the risks of environmental pollution caused by tourism activities. Therefore, Green Tourism is becoming an important and attractive trend, and it is also an opportunity to protect natural resources, maintain environmental balance and promote sustainable development. Vietnam, with its amazing natural beauty and unique cultural heritage, has great potential to develop green tourism. However, to achieve this goal, Vietnam needs to face challenges and have the right solutions. The article focuses on evaluating the current status of green tourism in Vietnam, highlighting the advantages and limitations that exist in the development process, from which the author proposes some to promote tourism development towards green investment, green growth and sustainability.

Diplomasi Vaksin Covid-19 Jepang di Vietnam

Japan conducted its COVID-19 vaccine diplomacy through bilateral channels and independently, without relying on the COVAX Facility. Vietnam was the first country to receive vaccine assistance from Japan and received the largest dosage compared to other Southeast Asian nations. This was driven by Japan's desire to ensure the resilience of its supply chain in Vietnam, strengthen future political and economic ties, facilitate post-COVID-19 economic recovery, and solidify its image as a humanitarian aid donor. This study aims to describe the implementation of Japan's COVID-19 vaccine diplomacy in Vietnam. A qualitative research method with a descriptive approach was employed. The analysis revealed that Japan has successfully implemented vaccine diplomacy through bilateral and multilateral cooperation. As a result of this vaccine diplomacy, Japan has gained both emotional and material benefits. The emotional benefit lies in the increased trust of Vietnam in Japan, while the material benefits include Vietnam accepting Japanese companies relocated from China, promoting Japanese tourism in Vietnam, and enhancing trade relations between the two countries to aid Japan's post-COVID-19 economic revitalization.

CHALLENGES OF POST- COVID VIETNAM TOURIST BRAND RECOVERY

This article analyzes the resurrection of the Vietnam's tourism industry after COVID-19 pandemic, which had a significant impact on the tourism industry, particularly in terms of reducing travel demand and disrupting supply chains. However, the government has implemented several measures to support the industry and promote tourism, including financial assistance, tax incentives, and marketing campaigns. The article highlights the need for continued government support and strategic planning to ensure the long-term recovery and growth of Vietnam's tourism industry. In addition, this paper elaborates on the factors that have impacted the slow return of Vietnam's tourism industry post-COVID-19 pandemic and the government's role in promoting the country's tourism brand. Opportunities and recommendations for Vietnam are discussed to enhance its tourism industry and effectively promote its image in the post-pandemic era.
