VSCF/VCI theory based on the Podolsky Hamiltonian.

While the vibrational spectra of semi-rigid molecules can be computed on approaches relying on the Watson Hamiltonian, floppy molecules or molecular clusters are better described by Hamiltonians, which are capable of dealing with any curvilinear coordinates. It is the kinetic energy operator (KEO) of these Hamiltonians, which render the correlated calculations relying on them rather costly. Novel implementation of vibrational self-consistent field theory and vibrational configuration interaction theory on the basis of the Podolsky Hamiltonian are reported, in which the inverse of the metric tensor, i.e., the G matrix, is represented by an n-mode expansion expressed in terms of polynomials. An analysis of the importance of the individual terms of the KEO with respect to the truncation orders of the n-mode expansion is provided. Benchmark calculations have been performed for the cis-HOPO and methanimine, H2CNH, molecules and are compared to experimental data and to calculations based on the Watson Hamiltonian and the internal coordinate path Hamiltonian.

Theoretical Insights into the Vibrational Structure of Carbon Dioxide Rare-Gas Complexes.

Two new flexible-monomer two-body ab initio potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the neon and krypton van der Waals complexes with carbon dioxide were developed, extending our previous work on the Ar-CO2 molecule. The accuracy of the PESs was validated by their agreement with the vibrational spectrum of the rare-gas complexes. The intermolecular and intramolecular vibrational excitation energies were computed at the vibrational self-consistent field and vibrational configuration interaction levels of theory. Overall, the agreement between theory and experiment is excellent throughout the vibrational spectra. The observed slight splitting of the bending modes, resulting from their nondegeneracy in the complexes, is confirmed by our computations, and the results qualitatively agree with the experiment. The splitting increases with increasing polarizability of the rare-gas atom. Additionally, we explain a discrepancy in the mode assignment in the intermolecular region of the neon complex with our VCI character assignment.

Vibrational ADAPT-VQE: Critical points lead to problematic convergence.

Quantum chemistry is one of the most promising applications for which quantum computing is expected to have a significant impact. Despite considerable research in the field of electronic structure, calculating the vibrational properties of molecules on quantum computers remains a relatively unexplored field. In this work, we develop a vibrational Adaptive Derivative-Assembled Pseudo-Trotter Variational Quantum Eigensolver (vADAPT-VQE) formalism based on an infinite product representation (IPR) of anti-Hermitian excitation operators of the Full Vibrational Configuration Interaction (FVCI) wavefunction, which allows for preparing eigenstates of vibrational Hamiltonians on quantum computers. In order to establish the vADAPT-VQE algorithm using the IPR, we study the exactness of disentangled Unitary Vibrational Coupled Cluster (dUVCC) theory and show that dUVCC can formally represent the FVCI wavefunction in an infinite expansion. To investigate the performance of the vADAPT-VQE algorithm, we numerically study whether the vADAPT-VQE algorithm generates a sequence of operators that may represent the FVCI wavefunction. Our numerical results indicate frequent appearance of critical points in the wavefunction preparation using vADAPT-VQE. These results imply that one may encounter diminishing usefulness when preparing vibrational wavefunctions on quantum computers using vADAPT-VQE and that additional studies are required to find methods that can circumvent this behavior.

First-Principles Anharmonic Infrared and Raman Vibrational Spectra of Materials: Fermi Resonance in Dry Ice.

We introduce a computational tool for the quantum-mechanical simulation of anharmonic infrared and Raman vibrational spectra of materials. The approach, implemented in the CRYSTAL software, stems from Taylor's expansion of the potential energy surface (PES) on the basis of normal modes up to cubic and quartic terms. The PES can be sampled with four different numerical schemes at the level of density functional theory (DFT), with local, generalized-gradient, and hybrid density functional approximations. Anharmonic states are obtained by solving Shrödinger's nuclear equation with either the vibrational self-consistent field (VSCF) or vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) methods. Nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) are thus fully accounted for. Infrared intensities are computed numerically through a Berry phase approach or analytically through a coupled-perturbed (CP) approach. Raman intensities are computed analytically via the CP approach. A variety of anharmonic features of vibrational spectra of materials can be simulated, including band shifts, combination bands, overtones, resonances (first-order Fermi, second-order Darling-Dennison), and hot bands. We showcase the effectiveness of the approach on the description of a first-order Fermi resonance (FR) in CO2 dry ice: a challenging test-case given that the FR occurs in the Raman spectrum, requires NQEs, and involves two- and three-mode couplings. Fundamental mechanistic differences with respect to the well-known FR in molecular CO2 are addressed. This application represents the first quantum-mechanical, periodic description of FR in dry ice.

Vibrational heat-bath configuration interaction with semistochastic perturbation theory using harmonic oscillator or VSCF modals.

Vibrational heat-bath configuration interaction (VHCI)-a selected configuration interaction technique for vibrational structure theory-has recently been developed in two independent works [J. H. Fetherolf and T. C. Berkelbach, J. Chem. Phys. 154, 074104 (2021); A. U. Bhatty and K. R. Brorsen, Mol. Phys. 119, e1936250 (2021)], where it was shown to provide accuracy on par with the most accurate vibrational structure methods with a low computational cost. Here, we eliminate the memory bottleneck of the second-order perturbation theory correction using the same (semi)stochastic approach developed previously for electronic structure theory. This allows us to treat, in an unbiased manner, much larger perturbative spaces, which are necessary for high accuracy in large systems. Stochastic errors are easily controlled to be less than 1 cm-1. We also report two other developments: (i) we propose a new heat-bath criterion and an associated exact implicit sorting algorithm for potential energy surfaces expressible as a sum of products of one-dimensional potentials; (ii) we formulate VHCI to use a vibrational self-consistent field (VSCF) reference, as opposed to the harmonic oscillator reference configuration used in previous reports. Our tests are done with quartic and sextic force fields, for which we find that with VSCF, the minor improvements to accuracy are outweighed by the higher computational cost associated the matrix element evaluations. We expect VSCF-based VHCI to be important for more general potential representations, for which the harmonic oscillator basis function integrals are no longer analytic.

Ab initio potential energy surface and anharmonic vibration spectrum of NF3+

Potential energy surfaces (PESs), vibrational frequencies, and infrared spectra are calculated for NF3+ using ab initio calculations, based on UCCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ combined with vibrational configuration interaction (VCI). Based on an iterative algorithm, the surfaces (SURF) program adds automatic points to the lattice representation of the potential function, the one-dimensional and two-dimensional PESs are calculated after reaching a convergence threshold, finally the smooth image of the potential energy surface is fitted. The PESs accurately account for the interaction between the different modes, with the mode q 6 symmetrical stretching vibrations having the greatest effect on the potential energy change of the whole system throughout the potential energy surface shift. The anharmonic frequencies are obtained when the VCI matrix is diagonalized. Fundamental frequencies, overtones, and combination bands of NF3+ are calculated, which generate the degenerate phenomenon between their frequencies. Finally, the calculated anharmonic frequency is used to plot the infrared spectra. Modal antisymmetric stretching ν 5 and symmetric stretching ν 6 exhibit a phenomenon of large-intensity borrowing. This study can provide data to support the characterization in the laboratory.

Fundamental vibrational frequencies of pnictogen (Pn) containing linear triatomic anions: OCPn - and SCPn - where Pn = N, P, As and Sb

The fundamental vibrational frequencies of the isolated OCAs − and SCAs − ions, as well as their heavier antimony analogues, are reported for the first time. A thorough analysis of basis set convergence of the bond lengths and harmonic vibrational frequencies, as well as the examination of anharmonic corrections, is conducted using the MP2 and CCSD(T) ab initio methods with robust basis sets for the OC P n − and SC P n − anions moving down the pnictogen series from Pn = N to Sb. Second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) and vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) theory are used to compute the fundamental vibrational frequencies of each triatomic anion approaching the MP2 and CCSD(T) complete basis set (CBS) limits. While fundamental vibrational frequencies have been reported for OCN − and SCN − in the gas phase, only experimental vibrational frequencies of the salts for the heavier pnictogen analogues (P and As) have been reported. Experimental Raman vibrational frequencies for OCAs − and SCAs − salts were found to be coincidentally in good agreement with the CCSD(T) VCI frequencies near the CBS limit, differing by at most 13 cm − 1 from the former and 9 cm − 1 from the latter. These modest differences are likely due to the presence of counter-ions and other environmental effects in the solid state, and the overall agreement between the salts and gas-phase frequencies is quite similar to that observed for the OCP − and SCP − ions.

Thioformyl cyanide, HC(S)CN, revisited: accurate rovibrational simulations for a molecule observed in interstellar clouds

Thioformyl cyanide, HC(S)CN, and its deuterated isotopologue have been studied by high-level ab initio methods. Based on multidimensional potential energy surfaces including up to four-mode coupling terms and obtained from explicitly correlated coupled-cluster calculations, their geometrical parameters, vibrational transitions, rovibrational spectrum and spectroscopic constants have been studied in detail. The latter two properties, being obtained from vibrational configuration interaction theory (VCI) and vibrational perturbation theory (VPT), have been compared with available experimental data. The rotational and rovibrational spectra have been studied by rovibrational configuration interaction theory (RVCI) and colour coding has been used to obtain detailed insight into the rotational fine structure.

Ab initio anharmonic analysis of complex vibrational spectra of phenylacetylene and fluorophenylacetylenes in the acetylenic and aromatic C-H stretching region.

Vibrational spectra in the acetylenic and aromatic C-H stretching regions of phenylacetylene and fluorophenylacetylenes, viz., 2-fluorophenylacetylene, 3-fluorophenylacetylene, and 4-fluorophenylacetylene, were measured using the IR-UV double resonance spectroscopic method. The spectra, in both acetylenic and aromatic C-H stretching regions, were complex exhibiting multiple bands. Ab-initio anharmonic calculations with quartic potential using B97D3/6-311++G(d,p) and vibrational configuration interaction were able to capture all important spectral features in both the regions of the experimentally observed spectra for all four molecules considered in the present work. Interestingly, for phenylacetylene, the spectrum in the acetylenic C-H stretching region emerges due to anharmonic coupling of modes localized on the acetylenic moiety along with the other ring modes, which also involve displacements on the acetylenic group, which is in contrast to what has been proposed and propagated in the literature. In general, this coupling scheme is invariant to the fluorine atom substitution. For the aromatic C-H stretching region, the observed spectrum emerges due to the coupling of the C-H stretching with C-C stretching and C-H in-plane bending modes.

Vibrational Predissociation Spectra of C2 N- and C3 N- : Bending and Stretching Vibrations.

We present infrared predissociation spectra of C2 N- (H2 ) and C 3 N- (H2 ) in the 300-1850 cm-1 range. Measurements were performed using the FELion cryogenic ion trap end user station at the Free Electron Lasers for Infrared eXperiments (FELIX) laboratory. For C2 N- (H2 ), we detected the CCN bending and CC-N stretching vibrations. For the C3 N- (H2 ) system, we detected the CCN bending, the CC-CN stretching, and multiple overtones and/or combination bands. The assignment and interpretation of the presented experimental spectra is validated by calculations of anharmonic spectra within the vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) approach, based on potential energy surfaces calculated at explicitly correlated coupled cluster theory (CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pVTZ-F12). The H2 tag acts as an innocent spectator, not significantly affecting the C2,3 N- bending and stretching mode positions. The recorded infrared predissociation spectra can thus be used as a proxy for the vibrational spectra of the bare anions.

Comprehensive quantum chemical analysis of the (ro)vibrational spectrum of thiirane and its deuterated isotopologue

The (ro)vibrational spectra of thiirane, c-C2H4S, and its fully deuterated isotopologue, c-C2D4S, have been studied by means of vibrational configuration interaction theory, VCI, its incremental variant, iVCI, and subsequent variational rovibrational calculations, RVCI, which rely on multidimensional potential energy surfaces of coupled-cluster quality including up to four-mode coupling terms. Accurate geometrical parameters, fundamental vibrational transitions and first overtones, rovibrational spectra and rotational spectroscopic constants have been determined from these calculations and were compared with experimental results whenever available. A number of tentative misassignments in the vibrational spectra could be resolved and most results for the deuterated thiirane are high-level predictions, which may guide experiments to come. Besides this, a new implementation of infrared intensities within the iVCI framework has been tested for the transitions of the title compounds and are compared with results obtained from standard VCI calculations.

Positioning of grid points for spanning potential energy surfaces-How much effort is really needed?

The positions of grid points for representing a multidimensional potential energy surface (PES) have a non-negligible impact on its accuracy and the associated computational effort for its generation. Six different positioning schemes were studied for PESs represented by n-mode expansions as needed for the accurate calculation of anharmonic vibrational frequencies by means of vibrational configuration interaction theory. A static approach, which has successfully been used in many applications, and five adaptive schemes based on Gaussian process regression have been investigated with respect to the number of necessary grid points and the accuracy of the fundamental modes for a small set of test molecules. A comparison with a related, more sophisticated, and consistent approach by Christiansen et al. is provided. The impact of the positions of the abinitio grid points is discussed for multilevel PESs, for which the computational effort of the individual electronic structure calculations decreases for increasing orders of the n-mode expansion. As a result of that, the ultimate goal is not the maximal reduction of grid points but rather the computational cost, which is not directly related.

AbstractThe simplest diphosphene HPPH and isomeric diphosphinyldene PPH2 features prototype phosphorus‐phosphorus multiple bonding properties that have been of long‐standing interest in main‐group chemistry. Herein, we report the observation of cis‐HPPH, trans‐HPPH, and PPH2 among the respective laser photolysis products of phosphine (PH3) and diphosphine (P2H4) in solid N2‐ and Ar‐matrices at 10 K. The identification of these P2H2 isomers with matrix‐isolation IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy is supported by D‐isotope labeling and the quantum chemical calculations at the CCSD(T)‐F12a/cc‐pVTZ‐F12 level using configuration‐selective vibrational configuration interaction theory (VCI). Bonding analyses suggest that the two conformers of HPPH contain standard PP double bonds, whereas, PPH2 resembles P2 in having partial PP triple bond due to the H2P←P π bonding interaction.

A theoretical study of propynal under interstellar conditions and beyond, covering low-frequency infrared spectra, spectroscopic constants, and hot bands

ABSTRACTFrom an astrochemical point of view, propynal is a complex organic molecule. Moreover, it is a potential candidate for the formation of prebiotic propanal and propenal. Therefore, this molecule is of particular interest for astrochemical investigations. As it has been detected in the interstellar medium, it is of high relevance in this field of research. Although experimental data are available for the vibrational fundamental bands and rotational constants, experimental data for vibrational overtones and combination bands are scarce and fairly old. Additionally, high-level ab initio calculations are also not reported. In this work, we provide accurate quantum chemical calculations as well as a detailed analysis of vibrational and rovibrational properties for this molecule. The low-frequency spectrum up to $350\, \,\,\text{cm}^{-1}$ has been studied for temperatures between 10 and $300\, \text{K}$. For the same temperature range, partition functions are provided. Furthermore, the impact of hot bands up to room temperature has been investigated. A comparison of our results with experimental data is provided for the rotational constants, geometrical parameters, and a rovibrational spectrum. The underlying potential energy surface within these calculations is based on explicitly correlated coupled-cluster theory and includes up to four-mode coupling terms within an n-mode expansion. The vibrational and rovibrational calculations rely on vibrational and rovibrational configuration interaction theories, respectively.

Quantum-chemical calculation of two-dimensional infrared spectra using localized-mode VSCF/VCI.

Computational protocols for the simulation of two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy usually rely on vibrational exciton models which require an empirical parameterization. Here, we present an efficient quantum-chemical protocol for predicting static 2D IR spectra that does not require any empirical parameters. For the calculation of anharmonic vibrational energy levels and transition dipole moments, we employ the localized-mode vibrational self-consistent field (L-VSCF)/vibrational configuration interaction (L-VCI) approach previously established for (linear) anharmonic theoretical vibrational spectroscopy [P. T. Panek and C. R. Jacob, ChemPhysChem 15, 3365-3377 (2014)]. We demonstrate that with an efficient expansion of the potential energy surface using anharmonic one-mode potentials and harmonic two-mode potentials, 2D IR spectra of metal carbonyl complexes and dipeptides can be predicted reliably. We further show how the close connection between L-VCI and vibrational exciton models can be exploited to extract the parameters of such models from those calculations. This provides a novel route to the fully quantum-chemical parameterization of vibrational exciton models for predicting 2D IR spectra.

Determination of spectroscopic constants from rovibrational configuration interaction calculations

Rotational constants and centrifugal distortion constants of a molecule are the essence of its rotational or rovibrational spectrum (e.g., from microwave, millimeter wave, and infrared experiments). These parameters condense the spectroscopic characteristics of a molecule and, thus, are a valuable resource in terms of presenting and communicating spectroscopic observations. While spectroscopic parameters are obtained from experimental spectra by fitting an effective rovibrational Hamiltonian to transition frequencies, the ab initio calculation of these parameters is usually done within vibrational perturbation theory. In the present work, we investigate an approach related to the experimental fitting procedure, but relying solely on ab initio data obtained from variational calculations, i.e., we perform a nonlinear least squares fit of Watson's A- and S-reduced rotation-vibration Hamiltonian to rovibrational state energies (resp. transition frequencies) from rotational-vibrational configuration interaction calculations. We include up to sextic centrifugal distortion constants. By relying on an educated guess of spectroscopic parameters from vibrational configuration interaction and vibrational perturbation theory, the fitting procedure is very efficient. We observe excellent agreement with experimentally derived parameters.

Anharmonic Coupling of Stretching Vibrations in Ice: A Periodic VSCF and VCI Description.

The anharmonicity of O-H stretching vibrations of water ice is characterized by use of a periodic implementation of the vibrational self-consistent field (VSCF) and vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) methods, which take phonon-phonon couplings explicitly into account through numerical evaluation of high-order terms of the nuclear potential. The low-temperature, proton-ordered phase of water ice (namely, ice XI) is investigated. The net effect of a coupled anharmonic treatment of stretching modes is not just a rigid blue-shift of the respective harmonic spectral frequencies but rather a complex change of their relative spectral positions, which cannot be captured by simple scaling strategies based on harmonic calculations. The adopted techniques allow for a hierarchical treatment of anharmonic terms of the nuclear potential, which is key to an effective identification of leading factors. We show that the anharmonic independent-mode approximation─only describing the "intrinsic anharmonicity" of the O-H stretches─is unable to capture the correct physics, and that couplings among O-H stretches must be described. Inspection of harmonic normal coordinates allows identification of specific features of the O-H stretching motions which most likely enable strong mode-mode couplings. Finally, by coupling O-H stretches to all other possible modes of ice XI (THz collective vibrations, molecular librations, bendings), we identify specific types of motion which significantly affect O-H stretching states: in particular, molecular librations are found to affect the stretching states more than molecular bendings.

Calculation of absolute Raman scattering cross-sections using vibrational self-consistent field/vibrational configuration interaction wave functions.

In the present study, the differential scattering cross-sections, depolarization ratios and Raman shifts of small molecular systems are obtained from configuration iteration wave functions of vibrational self-consistent field (VSCF) states. The transition polarizabilities were modeled using the Placzek approximation, neglecting those contributions not arising from the electric dipole mechanism. This theoretical approach is considered a good approximation for samples that absorb in the UV range if the excitation radiation falls in the visible region, as is the case of the molecules selected for the present study, namely: water, methane, and acetylene. Potential energy and electronic polarizability surfaces are calculated by the CCSD(T) and CC3 methods with aug-cc-p(C)V(T,Q,5)Z basis sets. The vibrational Hamiltonian includes the vibrational angular momentum contribution of the Watson kinetic energy operator. As expected, due to the variational nature of the VSCF and vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) methods, the Raman transition wavenumbers are substantially improved over the harmonic predictions. Surprisingly, the scattering cross-sections obtained using the harmonic approximation or the VSCF method better agrees with the experimental values than those cross-sections predicted using VCI wave functions. The more significant deviations of the VCI results from the experimental reference may be related to the significant uncertainties of the measured cross-sections. Still, it may also indicate that the VCI Raman transition moments may require a more accurate description of the electronic polarizability surface. Finally, the depolarization ratios calculated for H2 O and C2 D2 using harmonic and VCI wave functions have similar accuracy, whereas, for C2 H2 and C2 HD, the VCI results are more accurate.

Universal anharmonic potential energy surfaces for XY2-type molecules

An approach to generate anharmonic potential energy surfaces for both linear and bent XY2-type molecules from their equilibrium geometries, Hessians, and total atomization energies alone is presented. Two key features of the potential energy surfaces are that (a) they reproduce the harmonic behavior around the equilibrium geometries exactly and (b) they have the correct limiting behavior with respect to total bond dissociation. The potentials are constructed from two diatomic potentials, for which both the Morse or Varshni potentials are tested, and a triatomic potential, for which modified forms of the Anderson-n potential are tested. Potential energy surfaces for several linear and bent molecules are constructed from ab initio data, and the third-order derivatives of these surfaces at their equilibrium geometries are compared to the results of finite difference computations. For bent molecules, the vibrational spectra predicted by vibrational configuration interaction calculations on these surfaces are compared to experiment. A modified version of the Anderson-n potential, in combination with the Varshni potential, is demonstrated to predict vibrational frequencies associated with bond angle bending an average of 20 cm−1 below the harmonic oscillator approximation and with a fourfold reduction in the root-mean-square deviation from experiment compared to the harmonic oscillator approximation.
