Distinct differences of vertical phytoplankton community structure in mainstream and a tributary bay of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China.

The vertical distribution of phytoplankton plays a crucial role in shaping the dynamics and structure of aquatic communities. In highly dynamic reservoir systems, water level fluctuations significantly affect the physiochemical conditions and the phytoplankton community. However, the specific effects on the vertical characteristics of phytoplankton between the mainstream and the tributary bay of the reservoir remain unstudied. This study investigated the vertical aspects of phytoplankton density, biomass, α and β diversity through monthly sampling over two years in the mainstream (Chang Jiang, CJ) and a tributary bay (Xiang Xi, XX) of the Three Gorges Reservoir in China. Phytoplankton density and biomass were significantly higher in XX, indicating an increased risk of algal blooms in the tributary. The phytoplankton community in CJ showed more stable species-environment relationships, a lower Shannon index and a higher evenness index, suggesting a relatively simple structure and a more uniform distribution of phytoplankton among different water layers. Conversely, XX showed greater differences between water layers (higher β diversity), with significant negative correlations with water level and positive correlations with DO difference, dissolved silica (DSi) difference, and stratification. Peak phytoplankton density and biomass, as well as high β diversity in XX, occurred during periods of decreased water levels with strong stratification in spring and summer. A structural equation model complemented by path analysis revealed that a decrease in water level could increase β diversity either directly through internal processes with extended residence time or indirectly by modifying stratification and the vertical distribution of DSi in XX. Therefore, a proposed water quality management strategy for XX was to increase the water level or reduce β diversity by implementing artificial mixing during stratification periods. Overall, this study lies in its comprehensive investigation of the vertical characteristics of the phytoplankton community in both the mainstream and the tributary bay of the Three Gorges Reservoir, elucidating the significant impact of water level fluctuations and providing insights for targeted water quality management strategies in the tributary bay to mitigate potential ecological impacts.

Impact of critical eddy diffusivity on seasonal bloom dynamics of Phytoplankton in a global set of aquatic environments

The intensity of eddy diffusivity and the spatial average of water velocity at the depths of the water column in oceans and lakes play a fundamental role in phytoplankton production and phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass, and community composition. The critical depth and intensity of turbulent mixing within the water column profoundly affect phytoplankton biomass, which depends on the sinking characteristic of planktonic algal species. We propose an Nutrient-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton (NPZ) model in 3D space with light and nutrient-limited growth in a micro-scale ecological study. To incorporate micro-scale observation of phytoplankton intermittency in bloom mechanism in stationary as well as oceanic turbulent flows, a moment closure method has been applied in this study. Experimental observations imply that an increase in turbulence is sometimes ecologically advantageous for non-motile planktonic algae. How do we ensure whether there will be a bloom cycle or whether there can be any bloom at all when the existing phytoplankton group is buoyant, heavier, motile, or non-motile? To address these questions, we have explored the effects of critical depth, the intensity of eddy diffusivity, spatial average of water velocity, on the concentration as well as horizontal and vertical distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass using a mathematical model and moment closure technique. We quantify a critical threshold value of eddy diffusivity and the spatial average of water velocity and observe the corresponding changes in the phytoplankton bloom dynamics. Our results highlight the importance of eddy diffusivity and the spatial average of water velocity on seasonal bloom dynamics and also mimic different real-life bloom scenarios in Mikawa Bay (Japan), Tokyo Bay (Japan), Arakawa River (Japan), the Baltic Sea, the North Atlantic Ocean, Gulf Alaska, the North Arabian Sea, the Cantabrian Sea, Lake Nieuwe Meer (Netherlands) and several shallower lakes.

Potential of Mie-Fluorescence-Raman Lidar to Profile Chlorophyll a Concentration in Inland Waters.

Vertical distribution of phytoplankton is crucial for assessing the trophic status and primary production in inland waters. However, there is sparse information about phytoplankton vertical distribution due to the lack of sufficient measurements. Here, we report, to the best of our knowledge, the first Mie-fluorescence-Raman lidar (MFRL) measurements of continuous chlorophyll a (Chl-a) profiles as well as their parametrization in inland water. The lidar-measured Chl-a during several experiments showed good agreement with the in situ data. A case study verified that MFRL had the potential to profile the Chl-a concentration. The results revealed that the maintenance of subsurface chlorophyll maxima (SCM) was influenced by light and nutrient inputs. Furthermore, inspired by the observations from MFRL, an SCM model built upon surface Chl-a concentration and euphotic layer depth was proposed with root mean square relative difference of 16.5% compared to MFRL observations, providing the possibility to map 3D Chl-a distribution in aquatic ecosystems by integrated active-passive remote sensing technology. Profiling and modeling Chl-a concentration with MFRL are expected to be of paramount importance for monitoring inland water ecosystems and environments.

Linear water column stratification and euphotic depth determine the number of phytoplankton taxa that create biomass peaks in a hypertrophic oxbow lake

The mixing regime, the spatial distribution of nutrients and light determine the distribution of phytoplankton in lakes to a large extent. Linear stratification is a unique phenomenon among the various forms the lakes can stratify, representing a continuous and gradual water temperature decrease with depth. Here, we aimed to understand how mixing, nutrient and light affect the vertical distribution of phytoplankton in the case of linear water column stratification using the taxonomic and functional group approaches. We sampled phytoplankton and physical and chemical variables in the Malom-Tisza oxbow lake (Hungary) monthly from May to September between 2007 and 2009. Our results revealed that multiple biomass peaks of taxa belonging to distinct phytoplankton functional groups could develop in response to the strong linear stratification of the water column. Although several different species represented the functional groups, only one or two species developed the peaks. Light irradiance did not influence the vertical distribution of biomass and taxonomic richness of phytoplankton, but the depth of the euphotic zone determined the number of distinct biomass peaks. We found that diversity indices could not reflect the phytoplankton compositional differences well in the case of linear stratification, but similarity indices calculated among water column layers.

Using convective mixing in mesocosms to study climate-driven shifts in phytoplankton community distributions

With climate change predicted to alter water column stability and mixing across the world’s oceans, a mesocosm experiment was designed to ascertain how a natural phytoplankton community would respond to these changes. As a departure from other mesocosm experiments, we used heating and cooling to produce four different climate-inspired mixing scenarios ranging from well-mixed water columns representative of typical open turbulence (ϵ = 3 x 10-8 m2/s3) through to a quiescent water column with stable stratification (ϵ = 5 x 10-10 m2/s3). This method of turbulence generation is an improvement on previous techniques (e.g., grid, shaker, and aeration) which tend to produce excessive dissipation rates inconsistent with oceanic turbulence observations. Profiles of classical physical parameters used to describe turbulence and mixing (turbulent dissipation rate, buoyancy frequency, turbulent eddy diffusivity, Ozmidov scale) were representative of the profiles found in natural waters under similar mixing conditions. Chlorophyll-a profiles and cell enumeration showed a clear biological response to the different turbulence scenarios. However, the responses of specific phytoplankton groups (diatoms and dinoflagellates) did not conform to the usual expectations: diatoms are generally expected to thrive under convective, turbulent regimes, while dinoflagellates are expected to thrive in converse conditions, i.e., in stable, stratified conditions. Our results suggest that responses to mixing regimes are taxon-specific, with no overwhelming physical effect of the turbulence regime. Rather, each taxon seemed to very quickly reach a given vertical distribution that it managed to hold, whether actively or passively, with a high degree of success. Future studies on the effects of climate change on phytoplankton vertical distribution should thus focus on the factors and mechanisms that combine to determine the specific distribution of species within taxa. Our convection-based mesocosm approach, because it uses a primary physical force that generates turbulence in open waters, should prove a valuable tool in this endeavor.

Dissolved Oxygen and Water Temperature Drive Vertical Spatiotemporal Variation of Phytoplankton Community: Evidence from the Largest Diversion Water Source Area.

In order to study the vertical distribution characteristics of phytoplankton in the Danjiangkou Reservoir, the water source of the Middle Route Project of the South-North Water Diversion, seven sampling sites were set up in the Reservoir for quarterly sampling from 2017 to 2019, and water environment surveys were conducted simultaneously. The results showed that 157 species (including varieties) were identified, belonging to 9 phyla and 88 genera. In terms of species richness, Chlorophyta had the largest number of species, accounting for 39.49% of the total species. The Bacillariophyta and Cyanobacteria accounted for 28.03% and 13.38% of the total species, respectively. From the whole Danjiangkou Reservoir, the total phytoplankton abundance varied from 0.09 × 102 to 20.01 × 106 cells/L. In the vertical distribution, phytoplankton were mainly observed in the surface-thermospheric layer (I-II layer) and the bottom layer, while the Shannon-Wiener index showed a trend of gradually decreasing from the I-V layer. The Surfer model analysis showed that there was no significant stratification in the Q site's water temperature (WT) and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in the water diversion area during the dynamic water diversion process. A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that DO, WT, pH, electrical conductivity (Cond), chemical oxygen demand (CODMn), total phosphorus (TP), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), and total nitrogen (TN) had significant effects on the vertical distribution of phytoplankton (p < 0.05). A partial Mantel analysis showed that the vertical distribution of the phytoplankton community was related to WT, and the phytoplankton community structure at the other sites, except for Heijizui (H) and Langhekou (L), was affected by DO. This study has positive significance for exploring the vertical distribution characteristics of a phytoplankton community in a deep-water dynamic water diversion reservoir.

Phytoplankton photophysiology varies depending on nitrogen and light availability at the subsurface chlorophyll maximum in the northern Chukchi Sea

Vertical distributions of phytoplankton in the Arctic Ocean are characterized by a very narrow subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) layer formed every summer after the sea ice retreats. Despite the prevalence of this narrow SCM layer, phytoplankton photosynthetic response to climate change remains to be elucidated. Here, we examined the photophysiological properties of phytoplankton in the SCM layer in the northern Chukchi Sea during the summers of 2015–2018. There was a significant difference in the SCM depth between the northwestern and northeastern Chukchi Sea determined by the distribution of Pacific Summer Water (PSW) around the SCM layer (34 ± 14 m vs. 49 ± 10 m, respectively). The maximum quantum yield of photochemistry in photosystem II (Fv/Fm) in the SCM phytoplankton was high (Fv/Fm ≥ 0.54) and similar in both regions until 2016; however, since then, Fv/Fm in the northeastern Chukchi Sea has decreased by approximately 10%. This decrease was accompanied by a marked decrease in the fraction of microplankton, which are known to be susceptible to nutrient limitation. This result suggests a reduction in nitrogen availability in the SCM layer in the northeastern Chukchi Sea. Meanwhile, the maximum electron transfer rate (ETRmax) did not have a significant relationship with the nitrogen availability and phytoplankton community size structure in the SCM layer; however the improved light conditions (with an approximately two-fold increase in the relative ratio of surface PAR reaching the SCM layer) increased ETRmax by up to 30% in the SCM phytoplankton in the northwestern Chukchi Sea. Therefore, these results provide a better understanding of how changes in nitrogen and light availability could affect phytoplankton photosynthesis and primary production in the Arctic Ocean.

Estimation of the vertical phytoplankton distribution in the Philippine Sea: Influence of turbulence following passage of typhoons

The subsurface chlorophyll-a maximum (SCM) is a phenomenon that contributes significantly to the total primary production of the open ocean but it is not observable from remote sensing, thus primary production based on satellite information is highly underestimated. In a highly dynamic region such as the Philippine Sea, turbulence caused by tropical storms may exert significant impact on the SCM feature. In this study, we attempt to estimate the vertical phytoplankton profile in the Philippine Sea from remote sensing images by applying a generic quantitative approach. Generalized Additive Models (GAM) followed by Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) were used create predictive equations between response variables (Chl-a profile parameters) and predictor variables (RS parameters). GAM was able to predict integrated Chl-a biomass using photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), wind speed and wind stress, the depth of the Chl-a peak using surface Chl-a, wind speed and wind stress, and the baseline Chl-a concentration using sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity and PAR. GLM found wind stress and wind speed as significant predictors for integrated Chl-a biomass, while surface Chl-a, wind speed and wind stress were significant predictors for depth of the Chl-a peak. When the predictive equations were applied to 2020 monthly satellite images, they were seen to adequately estimate the offshore spatial distribution of the two Chl-a parameters. Increased turbulence due to high wind speed and wind stress during passage of tropical storms was seen to result in shallowing of the SCM and subsequent increase in Chl-a within the water column. These equations could be refined if long-term observational data was available. The capacity to estimate vertical distribution of primary productivity in the Philippines provides a means to better understand fisheries productivity and biogeochemical cycling in the region.

Physical-chemical factors influencing the vertical distribution of phototrophic pico-nanoplankton in the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) off Northern Chile: The relative influence of low pH/low O2 conditions

The vertical distribution of phytoplankton is of fundamental importance in the structure, dynamic, and biogeochemical pathways in marine ecosystems. Nevertheless, what are the main factors determining this distribution remains as an open question. Here, we evaluated the relative influence of environmental factors that might control the coexistence and vertical distribution of pico-nanoplankton associated with the OMZ off northern Chile. Our results showed that in the upper layer Synechococcus-like cells were numerically important at all sampling stations. Pico-nano eukaryotes and phototrophic nanoflagellates (PNF) also showed high abundances in the upper layer decreasing in abundance down to the upper oxycline, while only Prochlorococcus showed high abundances under oxycline and within the oxygen-depleted layer. Statistical analyses evidenced that temperature, oxygen, and carbonate chemistry parameters (pH and dissolved inorganic carbon, DIC) influenced significantly the vertical distribution of phototrophic pico-nanoplankton. Additionally, we experimentally-evaluated the combined effect of low pH/low O2 conditions on a nanophytoplankton species, the haptophyte Imantonia sp. Under control conditions (pH = 8.1; O2 = 287.5 μM, light = 169.6 μEm−2s−1), Imantonia sp. in vivo fluorescence increased over fifty times, inducing supersaturated O2 conditions (900 μM) and an increasing pH (8.5), whereas upon an experimental treatment mimicking OMZ conditions (pH = 7.5; O2 = 55.6 μM; light = 169.6 μEm−2s−1), in vivo fluorescence declined dramatically, suggesting that Imantonia sp. did not survive. Although preliminary, our study provides evidence about the role of low pH/low O2 conditions on the vertical distribution of nanophytoplankton, which deserve future attention through both fieldwork and more extended experimental experiences.

Vertical patterns of chlorophyll a in the euphotic layer are related to mesoscale eddies in the South China Sea

Phytoplankton closely connects with the hydrodynamics and biogeochemical environment of the ocean. While research focusing on both the physiochemical factors and hydrodynamics regulating phytoplankton has already been conducted, the coupling mechanism between mesoscale eddies and the vertical distribution of phyto plankton in the South China Sea (SCS) is still not well understood. Here, phytoplankton was studied under one weak-cold and two warm eddies along the 18°N transect in the SCS. The results show that the vertical distribution of chlorophyll (chl-a) presented a similar pattern at all four sampling stations. The mixed layer is less than 50 m. It is the same as the meridional salinity gradients that may be distinguished above a depth of 60 m. The subsurface chlorophyll maximum at the edge of a warm (WI) and cold eddy (CI) at E413 and E411 was shallower than that at the edge of a warm eddy (WII) at E407 and E409, indicating that temperature and salinity may be the important driving factors. On the whole, mesoscale eddies had a significant influence on the vertical pattern of chl-a in the SCS during the study period.

Vertical Distribution Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Phytoplankton Community Structure in Qiandao Lake

Clear vertical variations in phytoplankton community structure are usually observed in deep-water lakes and reservoirs, which is one of the key components of water quality and ecosystem functioning. However, the vertical patterns and ecological drivers of phytoplankton communities in deep-water lakes and reservoirs are still understudied. In this study, we took Qiandao Lake, a deep-water reservoir, as an example to reveal the vertical distribution characteristics of phytoplankton communities and its influencing factors by investigating phytoplankton community structure and the associated water quality index at 12 sites across the whole lake in two seasons (spring and autumn). The results showed that the phytoplankton abundance and chlorophyll a were highest in the surface layer in autumn and then decreased toward deep water, whereas in spring, the maximum value occurred in the subsurface layer (2-5 m), and the dominant phytoplankton species showed obvious vertical stratification characteristics. Specifically, in spring, Cryptomonas and Pseudanabaena dominated the surface and subsurface layers, Cryptomonas dominated in the middle layer, and the abundance of Cyclotella at the bottom layer was significantly higher than that of the other algae genera. The dominant genera in autumn were Pseudanabaena and Aphanizomenon. In the subsurface and middle layers, Leptolyngbya and Pseudanabaena occupied the dominant position, and Leptolyngbya became the only dominant genus. In the bottom layer, Leptolyngbya was the only dominant genus. The key environmental indicators of the water also had obvious vertical changes. The contents of N and P nutrients had a negative correlation with the water depth in spring, whereas the reverse trend was observed in autumn. The correlation analysis showed that the vertical variation in phytoplankton abundance in spring was significantly positively correlated with phosphate concentration, whereas the vertical distribution of phytoplankton abundance in autumn was significantly positively correlated with intensity of light, and the water temperature, NH4+-N, and total nitrogen were the main factors driving the vertical changes in the dominant genera of phytoplankton community in the two seasons. To summarize, environmental conditions such as water temperature, light, and nutrients had strong effects on the vertical distribution of phytoplankton. In the ecological investigation and quality assessment of deep-water lakes and reservoirs, the vertical distribution characteristics of the phytoplankton community structure and the influence of environmental conditions should be fully considered.

Mixed Layer Depth Promotes Trophic Amplification on a Seasonal Scale

AbstractThe Humboldt Upwelling System is of global interest due to its importance to fisheries, though the origin of its high productivity remains elusive. In regional physical‐biogeochemical model simulations, the seasonal amplitude of mesozooplankton net production exceeds that of phytoplankton, indicating “seasonal trophic amplification.” An analytical approach identifies amplification to be driven by a seasonally varying trophic transfer efficiency due to mixed layer variations. The latter alters the vertical distribution of phytoplankton and thus the zooplankton and phytoplankton encounters, with lower encounters occurring in a deeper mixed layer where phytoplankton are diluted. In global model simulations, mixed layer depth appears to affect trophic transfer similarly in other productive regions. Our results highlight the importance of mixed layer depth for trophodynamics on a seasonal scale with potential significant implications, given mixed layer depth changes projected under climate change.

Effect of El Niño‐Related Warming on Phytoplankton's Vertical Distribution in the Arabian Sea

AbstractIn this study, we analyzed the effect of warming in ecological responses due to seasonal cycle and 2015/2016 El Niño event on the vertical distribution of phytoplankton within the entire euphotic zone (0–100 m) in the eastern Arabian Sea using BGC‐Argo data during 2015–2019. We found that phytoplankton in different layers had different responses to warming. Phytoplankton biomass (defined as the integrated chlorophyll a concentration in this paper) decreased in 0–50 m layer while it increased in 50–100 m layer during spring (March‐June) and 2015/2016 El Niño event. At the same time, the vertical expansion of warming (temperature &gt;28 °C), together with nitrate and silicate co‐limitation, triggered the formation of subsurface chlorophyll maximum layer, which became thinner and deeper during these warming periods. Results from the generalized additive models showed that the monthly 28 °C isotherm can be used as a first approximation to separate vertical water column where warming had opposite signed effects. For a 0–50 m layer of poor nutrients due to the mixed layer shoaling and reduced atmospheric deposition, a negative effect of warming on phytoplankton was seen if the temperature was higher than 28 °C. But, for a 50–100 m layer of rich nutrients, a positive effect of warming on phytoplankton was seen if the temperature was within the range of 25.5–28.0 °C and the light was enhanced. These results shed light on the effect of global warming on subsurface phytoplankton and may help research of the same topic regarding future warming.

An Improved Adaptive Subsurface Phytoplankton Layer Detection Method for Ocean Lidar Data

Phytoplankton, as the foundation of primary production, is of great significant for the marine ecosystem. The vertical distribution of phytoplankton contains key information about marine ecology and the optical properties of water bodies related to remote sensing.The common methods to detect subsurface phytoplankton biomass are often in situ measurements and passive remote sensing; however, the bio-argo measurement is discrete and costly, and the passive remote sensing measurement is limited to obtain the vertical information. As a component of active remote sensing, lidar technology has been proved as an effective method for mapping the vertical distribution of phytoplankton. In the past years, there have been few studies on the phytoplankton layer extraction method for lidar data. The existing subsurface layer extraction algorithms are often non-automatic, which need manual intervention or empirical parameters to set the layer extraction threshold. Hence, an improved adaptive subsurface phytoplankton layer detection method was proposed, which incorporates a curve fitting method and a robust estimation method to determine the depth and thickness of subsurface phytoplankton scattering layer. The combination of robust estimation method can realize automatic calculation of layer detection threshold according to the characteristic of each lidar signal, instead of an empirical fixed value used in previous works. In addition, the noise jamming signal can also be effectively detected and removed. Lidar data and in situ spatio-temporal matching Chlorophyll-a profile data obtained in Sanya Bay in 2018 was used for algorithm verification. The example result of step-by-step process illustrates that the improved method is available for adaptive threshold determination for layer detection and redundant noise signals elimination. Correlation analysis and statistical hypothesis testing shows the retrieved subsurface phytoplankton maximum depth by the improved method and in situ measurement is highly relevant. The absolute difference of layer maximum depth between lidar data and in situ data for all stations is less than 0.75 m, and mean absolute difference of layer thickness difference is about 1.74 m. At last, the improved method was also applied to the lidar data obtained near Wuzhizhou Island seawater, which proves that the method is feasiable and robust for various sea areas.

High-resolution temporal detection of cyanobacterial blooms in a deep and oligotrophic lake by high-frequency buoy data

Cyanobacterial blooms are increasing in magnitude, frequency, and duration worldwide. However, our knowledge of cyanobacterial blooms dynamics and driving mechanisms is still limited due to their high spatiotemporal variability. To determine the potential driving mechanisms of cyanobacterial blooms in oligotrophic lakes, we collected a high-frequency depth profile of chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) and synchronous water quality, hydrometeorological data in early spring 2016 in oligotrophic Lake Qiandaohu. The vertical distribution of ChlF exhibited two patterns, “aggregated” and “discrete”, using Morisita's index, and the aggregated ChlF presented subsurface chlorophyll maxima during the thermal stratification period. The ChlF concentration was positively correlated with water temperature and negatively correlated with turbidity. Significantly linear relationships were observed between ChlF vertical structure parameters (e.g., Morisita's index, subsurface chlorophyll maxima depth and thickness) and thermal stratification parameters (e.g., mixing layer depth and relative water column stability). After rainstorm floods, the ChlF pattern suddenly change from “aggregated” to “discrete” and a ChlF concentration <1 μg/L was observed for 7–11 days with a significant increase in the mixing depth layer and turbidity. The results suggest that cyanobacterial blooms are robustly associated with thermal stratification and rainstorm floods in the deep and oligotrophic lake. Thermal stratification boosts surface phytoplankton accumulation by increasing water temperature, enhancing light availability and restricting phytoplankton vertical distribution. Rainstorm floods interrupt the accumulation by disrupting thermal stratification and decreasing the available light. Furthermore, wind speed and air temperature both regulate the phytoplankton dynamics by affecting thermal stratification. Our research quantifies the cyanobacterial bloom dynamics and their relationship between environmental factors, improving our knowledge of the driving mechanisms of cyanobacterial bloom for the protection of drinking water safety and aquatic organism health in lakes.

Characterizing the vertical phytoplankton distribution in the Philippine Sea off the northeastern coast of Luzon

The vertical distribution of phytoplankton in the open ocean shows an increase in biomass at a depth referred to as the Subsurface Chlorophyll Maximum (SCM) that contributes significantly to the primary production of the water column. Hence, it is important to understand the dynamics that lead its formation and maintenance. This study examines the SCM in the Philippine Sea off the northeast coast of Luzon, utilizing bio-optical and empirical phytoplankton data from two oceanographic cruises conducted northeast of the island of Luzon in May/June 2011 and April/May 2012. Chlorophyll (Chl) profiles were converted to smoothed chlorophyll functions by using a b-spline basis. In 2011, the mean SCM depth was 97.24 m ± 22.33 m with mean SCM concentration of 0.43 μg/L ± 0.09 μg/L while in 2012, mean SCM was deeper at 115.45 m ± 24.25 m and mean SCM concentration of 0.31 ± 0.09 μg/L. Functional principal component analysis showed that the first principal component (PC) explained variability in the SCM depth, the second PC showed variability in the magnitude of the SCM concentration while the third PC accounted for the presence of multiple peaks. K-means clustering using the principal components resulted in three clusters which represented the offshore stations with the deepest SCM, stations within an observed cyclonic eddy with intermediate SCM and stations with coastal and shelf waters showing shallow SCM. Correlation analyses between Chl and physico-chemical and bio-optical parameters showed that Chl was positively correlated to beam attenuation, a bio-optical property that has been used as an alternative proxy for phytoplankton. This suggests that the observed SCMs represent actual increase in phytoplankton biomass. When the influence of the Kuroshio recirculation gyre was dominant in 2011, cooler temperature in surface waters was seen to significantly increase surface Chl. In 2012, highly saline waters from the tropical North Equatorial Current (NEC) waters appeared to lower the Chl distribution, particularly at the SCM. Phytoplankton abundance was recorded to be higher at the SCM than the surface in both years. In 2011, different species of diatoms dominated all clusters, except at the SCM of the coastal and shelf cluster wherein the dinoflagellate Gyrodinium grossestriatum was dominant. Most dominant species from 2011 were conspicuously absent in 2012 and there was a shift to the diatoms Fragilariopsis (surface), Thalassiosira and Rhizosolenia spp. in all clusters. These provide new insights on the phytoplankton community in relation to the changes in the oceanic circulation from subtropical North Pacific water in 2011 to tropical NEC water in 2012.

Deep maxima of phytoplankton biomass, primary production and bacterial production in the Mediterranean Sea

Abstract. The deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) is a ubiquitous feature of phytoplankton vertical distribution in stratified waters that is relevant to our understanding of the mechanisms that underpin the variability in photoautotroph ecophysiology across environmental gradients and has implications for remote sensing of aquatic productivity. During the PEACETIME (Process studies at the air-sea interface after dust deposition in the Mediterranean Sea) cruise, carried out from 10 May to 11 June 2017, we obtained 23 concurrent vertical profiles of phytoplankton chlorophyll a, carbon biomass and primary production, as well as heterotrophic prokaryotic production, in the western and central Mediterranean basins. Our main aims were to quantify the relative role of photoacclimation and enhanced growth as underlying mechanisms of the DCM and to assess the trophic coupling between phytoplankton and heterotrophic prokaryotic production. We found that the DCM coincided with a maximum in both the biomass and primary production but not in the growth rate of phytoplankton, which averaged 0.3 d−1 and was relatively constant across the euphotic layer. Photoacclimation explained most of the increased chlorophyll a at the DCM, as the ratio of carbon to chlorophyll a (C:Chl a) decreased from ca. 90–100 (g:g) at the surface to 20–30 at the base of the euphotic layer, while phytoplankton carbon biomass increased from ca. 6 mg C m−3 at the surface to 10–15 mg C m−3 at the DCM. As a result of photoacclimation, there was an uncoupling between chlorophyll a-specific and carbon-specific productivity across the euphotic layer. The ratio of fucoxanthin to total chlorophyll a increased markedly with depth, suggesting an increased contribution of diatoms at the DCM. The increased biomass and carbon fixation at the base of the euphotic zone was associated with enhanced rates of heterotrophic prokaryotic activity, which also showed a surface peak linked with warmer temperatures. Considering the phytoplankton biomass and turnover rates measured at the DCM, nutrient diffusive fluxes across the nutricline were able to supply only a minor fraction of the photoautotroph nitrogen and phosphorus requirements. Thus the deep maxima in biomass and primary production were not fuelled by new nutrients but likely resulted from cell sinking from the upper layers in combination with the high photosynthetic efficiency of a diatom-rich, low-light acclimated community largely sustained by regenerated nutrients. Further studies with increased temporal and spatial resolution will be required to ascertain if the peaks of deep primary production associated with the DCM persist across the western and central Mediterranean Sea throughout the stratification season.

Multiscale physical background to an exceptional harmful algal bloom of Dinophysis acuta in a fjord system

Dinophysis acuta produces diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxins and pectenotoxins (PTX). It blooms in thermally-stratified shelf waters in late summer in temperate to cold temperate latitudes. Despite its major contribution to shellfish harvesting bans, little effort has been devoted to study its population dynamics in Chilean Patagonia. In 2017–2018, mesoscale distribution of harmful algal species (75 monitoring stations) revealed the initiation (late spring) and seasonal growth of a dense D. acuta population in the Aysén region, with maximal values at Puyuhuapi Fjord (PF). Vertical phytoplankton distribution and fine-resolution measurements of physical parameters along a 25-km transect in February 16th identified a 15-km (horizontal extension) subsurface thin layer of D. acuta from 4 to 8 m depth. This layer, disrupted at the confluence of PF with the Magdalena Sound, peaked at the top of the pycnocline (6 m, 15.9 °C, 23.4 psu) where static stability was maximal. By February 22nd, it deepened (8 m, 15.5 °C; 23.62 psu) following the excursions of the pycnocline and reached the highest density ever recorded (664 × 103 cells L−1) for this species. Dinophysis acuta was the dominant Dinophysis species in all microplankton net-tows/bottle samples; they all contained DSP toxins (OA, DTX-1) and PTX-2. Modeled flushing rates showed that Puyuhuapi, the only fjord in the area with 2 connections with the open sea, had the highest water residence time. Long term climate variability in the Southern hemisphere showed the effects of a Southern Annular Mode (SAM) in positive mode (+1.1 hPa) overwhelming a moderate La Niña. These effects included positive spring precipitation anomalies with enhanced salinity gradients and summer drought with positive anomalies in air (+1 °C) and sea surface (+2 °C) temperature. Locally, persistent thermal stratification in PF seemed to provide an optimal physical habitat for initiation and bloom development of D. acuta. Thus, in summer 2018, a favourable combination of meteorological and hydrographic processes of multiple scales created conditions that promoted the development of a widespread bloom of D. acuta with its epicentre at the head of Puyuhuapi fjord.

A coupled ecohydrodynamic model to predict algal blooms in Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is home to a unique high-altitude ecosystem that is suffering from increasing anthropogenic pressures. It experienced its first major algal bloom in March–April 2015 that had devastating consequences in the southern shallow lake basin. Such events are expected to intensify in the future and call for a more active and quantitative management of the lake and its watershed. In this paper we describe a coupled ecohydrodynamic model to predict the lake’s water quality and, more particularly, the risk of harmful algal blooms. We have coupled a nitrogen-phytoplankton-zooplankton-detritus (NPZD) ecosystem model to the unstructured-mesh 3D hydrodynamic model SLIM. Our high-resolution multi-scale model explicitly represents the exchanges between the two basins composing the lake, through the narrow Strait of Tiquina. This allowed us to study the biophysical processes driving the entire lake over the period of January 2014 to May 2015. The model has been validated against temperature profiles at several locations throughout the lake. It correctly reproduces the seasonal temperature variations that drive the lake stratification and impact the vertical distributions of phytoplankton. Our model was able to replicate the space–time dynamics of the March–April 2015 algal bloom similarly to what was observed on satellite imagery. We believe that our multi-scale ecohydrodynamic model is a promising tool to complement field observations and hence support water management in the lake and its watershed.

The Southern Polar Front as a key to mesoplankton migratory behavior

Diel and seasonal vertical migrations of zooplankton represent a widespread phenomenon occurring in marine and freshwater environments. Diel migrations are panoceanic, while seasonal migrations usually occur in temperate and polar areas. This paper describes differences in the diel and seasonal vertical migrations in the Drake Passage north and south of the Polar Front (PF). We analyzed material of 85 stations collected in spring of 2008 and 2010 (October–November) and in summer of 2010 and 2011 (January) within the 0–300 m depth range during various time of a day. At each station we sampled the upper mixed (UL), the middle (ML), and the deeper layers (DL) bounded by hydrological gradients. Diel migrations were significantly different south and north of the PF in terms of total abundance, biomass, diversity and individual taxa density. In both seasons, mesoplankton dielly migrated between the ML/DL and the UL north of the PF and between layers below 300 m and the DL and ML south of the PF. Deeper range of diel migrations south of the PF was coupled with a general mesoplankton descent in summer period compared to spring. Conversely, north of the PF, mesoplankton ascended to upper layers in summer, which was mirrored in lesser depths of diel migrations. The differences in the plankton distribution on both sides of the PF are likely associated with variations of vertical distribution of phytoplankton. Some abundant taxa such as Aetideus sp. and Oithona plumifera showed both common (nighttime ascend) and inverted (nighttime descend) vertical migrations depending on season and position related to the PF.
