DeepLOKI- a deep learning based approach to identify zooplankton taxa on high-resolution images from the optical plankton recorder LOKI

Zooplankton play a crucial role in the ocean’s ecology, as they form a foundational component in the food chain by consuming phytoplankton or other zooplankton, supporting various marine species and influencing nutrient cycling. The vertical distribution of zooplankton in the ocean is patchy, and its relation to hydrographical conditions cannot be fully deciphered using traditional net casts due to the large depth intervals sampled. The Lightframe On-sight Keyspecies Investigation (LOKI) concentrates zooplankton with a net that leads to a flow-through chamber with a camera taking images. These high-resolution images allow for the determination of zooplankton taxa, often even to genus or species level, and, in the case of copepods, developmental stages. Each cruise produces a substantial volume of images, ideally requiring onboard analysis, which presently consumes a significant amount of time and necessitates internet connectivity to access the EcoTaxa Web service. To enhance the analyses, we developed an AI-based software framework named DeepLOKI, utilizing Deep Transfer Learning with a Convolution Neural Network Backbone. Our DeepLOKI can be applied directly on board. We trained and validated the model on pre-labeled images from four cruises, while images from a fifth cruise were used for testing. The best-performing model, utilizing the self-supervised pre-trained ResNet18 Backbone, achieved a notable average classification accuracy of 83.9%, surpassing the regularly and frequently used method EcoTaxa (default) in this field by a factor of two. In summary, we developed a tool for pre-sorting high-resolution black and white zooplankton images with high accuracy, which will simplify and quicken the final annotation process. In addition, we provide a user-friendly graphical interface for the DeepLOKI framework for efficient and concise processes leading up to the classification stage. Moreover, performing latent space analysis on the self-supervised pre-trained ResNet18 Backbone could prove advantageous in identifying anomalies such as deviations in image parameter settings. This, in turn, enhances the quality control of the data. Our methodology remains agnostic to the specific imaging end system used, such as Loki, UVP, or ZooScan, as long as there is a sufficient amount of appropriately labeled data available to enable effective task performance by our algorithms.

Sea-ice decline could keep zooplankton deeper for longer

As Arctic sea ice deteriorates, more light enters the ocean, causing largely unknown effects on the ecosystem. Using an autonomous biophysical observatory, we recorded zooplankton vertical distribution under Arctic sea ice from dusk to dawn of the polar night. Here we show that zooplankton ascend into the under-ice habitat during autumn twilight, following an isolume of 2.4 × 10−4 W m−2. We applied this trigger isolume to CMIP6 model outputs accounting for incoming radiation after sunset and before sunrise of the polar night. The models project that, in about three decades, the total time spent by zooplankton in the under-ice habitat could be reduced by up to one month, depending on geographic region. This will impact zooplankton winter survival, the Arctic foodweb, and carbon and nutrient fluxes. These findings highlight the importance of biological processes during the twilight periods for predicting change in high-latitude ecosystems.

Autumn vertical distribution of zooplankton in the oxygen minimum zone of the Eastern Tropical North Pacific

To confirm the Habitat Compression Hypothesis, a cruise to the Eastern Tropical North Pacific (ETNP) took place at the entrance of the Gulf of California, in an area rarely studied at the southern limit of the California Current, where it mixes with waters of the West Mexican Current and the Gulf of California. No significant day-night differences in the vertical distribution (0–500 m depth) of zooplankton were found based on 22 MOCNESS tows and, for the first time, a 48-h cycle of stratified zooplankton sampling. Most zooplankton groups were observed within the upper 100 m, above the oxycline, with oxygen concentrations as low as 45 μmol kg−1. Some California Current-influenced samples showed a slightly different vertical distribution. A ∼50% reduction in the number and abundance of 24 zooplankton groups was recorded within the Oxygen Minimum Zone, from 100 to 500 m depth. Vertical migrator's exceptions include some euphausiid species that migrate into the OMZ during the day. Principal Component Analyses showed that the vertical distribution of zooplankton is limited by oxygen, with a low zooplankton carbon density below ∼100 m depth within the OMZ. The difference between day and night for the upper 0–100 m layer was non-significant (U221 = 57; p = 0.947); however, the data showed great variability. Thus, zooplankton Carbon remains relatively constant, in the upper 100 m, and is available during day and night, in the studied area.

Visual predation risk and spatial distributions of large Arctic copepods along gradients of sea ice and bottom depth

AbstractChanges in the community size structure of Arctic copepods toward smaller and less fat individuals or species have been linked to environmental changes. The underpinning mechanisms are, however, poorly understood. We use a two‐step hurdle regression model to analyze spatially resolved, long‐term survey data of the Barents Sea mesozooplankton community along gradients of water mass properties, sea ice, and bottom depth. We test the hypothesis that reduced visual predation, and hence increased survival in dim habitats, explains the distribution of large copepods. We expect the presence and biomass of large copepods to increase with increasing bottom depth and the occurrence of seasonal ice‐cover. The patterns and drivers that emerge from our analysis support our hypothesis: in the Barents Sea large copepods were predominantly found in deep troughs that intersect the shelf south of the polar front, or at shallower depths in seasonally ice‐covered waters northeast of Svalbard. On the banks, large copepods are largely absent whereas smaller copepods appear to survive. Top‐down control provides one plausible explanation for these distributions. Large copepods survive where sea‐ice shades the water or deep habitats permit escape from visual predators through vertical migrations. However, when upwelled onto shallow banks or flushed out from below the ice they are decimated by visual foragers. Therefore, advection and topographic blockage of vertical zooplankton distributions are key mechanisms for the efficient energy transfer and productivity in subarctic and Arctic shelf seas. New prolific foraging grounds may open up for planktivores where the ice‐edge recedes under a changing climate.

Vertical distribution patterns of zooplankton across a gradient of fish predation in boreal lakes

Abstract Different physical factors such as solar radiation and wind impose strong vertical gradients in lake water columns and have important consequences on the distribution of aquatic organisms, from bacteria to fish. The heterogeneous vertical distribution of zooplankton in lakes is a clear example of a pattern related to these vertical gradients. Although the vertical distribution of zooplankton is probably controlled by multiple factors including light, resources, and predation, we still lack an integrated view of the interplay among these potential drivers, which are most often analysed separately. Moreover, most studies focussed on temperate lakes in which both phytoplankton resources and predation risk from fish are highest in the epilimnion, whereas only a few investigated boreal lakes, where phytoplankton is often more abundant in the metalimnion than in the epilimnion and cold‐stenothermic fishes prey on zooplankton below the warm epilimnetic layers. Here we investigated zooplankton vertical distribution in the epi‐ and metalimnetic waters of 17 boreal lakes that varied in fish predation, resource quantity and quality, and optical properties. The lakes were sampled at midday and midnight at five different depths in the well‐lit epi‐ and metalimnetic layers, where the strongest gradient in light (and predation risk) were expected. We used a multi‐model inference approach combined with linear modelling to examine the relative effects of physical factors (light attenuation, temperature and moon phase), resources (chlorophyll‐a and polyunsaturated fatty acids), and predation (fish and Chaoborus) on depth selection in four zooplankton taxa. All taxa showed a heterogeneous vertical distribution that in most cases had a clear diel migration pattern. Both predation and resources (food and temperature gradient) were associated with vertical depth selection by zooplankton, but each taxon had different responses to each factor. Vertebrate predators were associated with the vertical distribution of Daphnia, Calanoida, and Cyclopoida, but—unexpectedly—all these taxa reduced their diel vertical migration patterns in the presence of fish. Invertebrate predators were better correlated with the distribution of Cyclopoida, which tended to be shallower when Chaoborus was abundant. Food abundance seemed important for Holopedium glacialis and Calanodia, while the temperature gradient was partly associated with both Daphnia spp. and Calanoida distribution. Finally, we found an intriguing, albeit weak, positive association between the vertical distribution of Cyclopoida and that of food quality. These results showed that taxa less vulnerable to predators such as H. glacialis perform inverse DVM, and that this is at least partly related to moon phase rather than to fish predation. They also suggest that boreal lakes colonised by stenothermic planktivorous fish behave differently from the classical DVM paradigm, given that visual predators do not have access to fully lit layers.

Environmental factors controlling zooplankton accumulation in the near-surface layer in the western North Pacific marginal seas

Vertical distribution of zooplankton abundance is essential for understanding the linking primary production to higher-trophic marine organisms. In this study, we investigated the zooplankton abundance at the near-surface layer (0–20 m depth; ZA 20 ) and those at 0–200 m depth (ZA 200 ) from 240 stations in the Sea of Japan (SOJ) and the East China Sea–Kuroshio (ECSK) area during summer to evaluate the environmental parameters controlling zooplankton accumulation in the near-surface layer. The total numerical ZA 20 was 22 ± 15% (mean ± standard deviation) and 15 ± 11% of ZA 200 in the SOJ and ECSK, respectively. Temperature and chlorophyll a concentration at 20 m depth, as well as the sampling time, had a significant impact on the degree of surface accumulation (ZA 20 : ZA 200 ratio) in a generalized additive model (GAM); the ZA 20 : ZA 200 ratio increased in cold and eutrophic conditions and during the nighttime. The difference between SOJ and ECSK was insignificant, while the zooplankton communities were significantly different between the areas. Therefore, the vertical distribution of zooplankton is seamlessly explained by environmental parameters when setting the zooplankton as one ecological functional group. Members belonging to six orders, Calanoida, Harpacticoida, Cyclopoida, Ctenopoda ( Penilia avirostris ), Onychopoda (family Podonidae ), and Copelata (appendicularian), were dominant based on microscopic observations. When the ZA 20 : ZA 200 ratio was estimated at the order level, the responses to temperature differed between copepods and non-copepods groups: the copepods stay in the subsurface water when the surface water is warm. • We compared the zooplankton abundance in the ≤20 m and ≤ 200 m depth. • Zooplankton accumulated the ≤20 m depth in cold and eutrophic water and at night. • Almost a quarter of zooplankton was in the ≤20 m depth. • Copepods stayed in the subsurface water when the surface water is warm.

Anticyclonic mesoscale eddy induced mesopelagic biomass hotspot in the oligotrophic ocean

Increasing evidence suggests that mesoscale eddies have a strong influence on the distribution and behavior of zooplankton and micronekton. However, the mechanisms driving their responses to mesoscale eddies are not yet fully understood, largely due to the low resolution of previous observations. Underwater gliders equipped with acoustic equipment and environmental sensors provide an ideal means to obtain observations with high temporal and spatial resolutions. In this study, two underwater gliders were used to record environmental parameters and acoustic intensities across an anticyclonic eddy in the oligotrophic western North Pacific subtropical gyre in September 2019. Based on the variations in the sea surface current and sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) along the underwater glider tracks, the study area was divided into three subregions: eddy core (SSHA >27 cm), eddy periphery (27 cm > SSHA >20 cm), and ambient water (SSHA <20 cm). More intense backscattering occurred in the upper 800 m of the eddy core with mean area backscattering coefficient values that were 35.8% higher than those of the eddy periphery and 19.8% higher than those of the ambient water. The convergence associated with the eddy could explain that the largest animal congregations occurred in the upper 100 m of the eddy core at night. Downwelling of warmer and oxygen-rich water in the eddy core induced animals to accumulate toward the deep of the eddy core, while migrating downwards during the day. Both these results and the lack of spatial heterogeneity of chlorophyll -a in and around the anticyclonic eddy indicated that horizontal and vertical distributions of zooplankton and micronekton in the anticyclonic eddy in the oligotrophic ocean were less related to spatial variations in the phytoplankton, but might be associated with the combined effect of the physical process in the anticyclonic eddy and the diel vertical migration behavior of animals. Our results suggest that anticyclonic eddies can dynamically modulate the spatial distribution of biomass, leading to the formation of mesopelagic biomass hotspots in the oligotrophic oceans and strongly affecting the ecology and behaviors of top predators that prey on small animals. • Spatial heterogeneity in biomass distribution was observed in an anticyclonic eddy. • Redistribution of biomass occurs within anticyclonic eddies. • Anticyclonic eddies in oligotrophic oceans support mesopelagic biomass hotspots.

The relationship between zooplankton vertical distribution and the concentration of aqueous Hg in boreal lakes: A comparative field study

The production of the highly toxic monomethylmercury (MeHg) is heterogenous throughout the water column. Multiple factors have been identified to significantly affect this process, such as an extended anoxic water layer and a deep-water phytoplankton maximum. However, the role of water column heterogeneity on mercury (Hg) cycling is still poorly known, especially concerning the role of zooplankton grazers. Here, four boreal lakes with contrasting characteristics were sampled (i.e., transparency and the presence/absence of fish) at both day and night in order to maximize the heterogeneity in zooplankton abundance both among and within lakes, and to investigate their potential links with Hg vertical heterogeneity. Diel variation of the concentrations of both dissolved total Hg (DTHg) and total Hg (THg) were observed, with night samples significantly higher than day samples. Although this pattern was not related to diel changes in the vertical distribution of zooplankton, results showed that the presence of large copepods (>1.2 mm) and medium-sized (0.6 to 1.2 mm) cladocerans was significantly associated with lower concentrations of DTHg in the water at a given depth, whereas the presence of medium-sized copepods was significantly associated with the concentration of THg. The presence of cladocerans was significantly associated with the ratio between the dissolved MeHg and DTHg (conventionally used as a proxy of methylation potential). Phytoplankton biomass was directly correlated with the concentration of both dissolved and total MeHg and the methylation potential. At the same time, phytoplankton biomass was inversely related to the fraction of DTHg. These results suggest a potential key role of the heterogeneity of biotic factors in the water column, especially of phytoplankton and zooplankton, in the cycling of total Hg and MeHg in boreal lakes.

Dark plumes of glacial meltwater affect vertical distribution of zooplankton in the Arctic

In polar regions, the release of glacial meltwater resulting in turbid plumes is expected to transform coastal waters with numerous consequences on the marine ecosystem. This study aimed to determine the influence of turbidity regimes on the vertical distribution of copepods together with their potential food (chlorophyll a fluorescence) and non-visual predators (gelatinous zooplankton). Hydrography, turbidity, suspended particulate matter and chlorophyll a were studied in July and August 2019 in West Spitsbergen waters (European Arctic). Fine-scale vertical distribution patterns of zooplankton were assessed by an optical counter (LOPC) and underwater camera (UVP) and verified by plankton nets. In waters with the shallow impact of dark plumes, Calanus spp. and gelatinous zooplankton were concentrated in the upper water layers, whereas in areas with a thick turbid layer, they were distributed evenly in the water column. However, chlorophyll a peaks were found to be restricted to the surface in the turbid waters and there were subsurface maxima in the shallow turbidity regime. Regardless of the region, the turbidity regime was a significant factor shaping the vertical distribution of Calanus spp. We speculate that similar trends might be observed in other rapidly emerging turbid ecosystems and urge that future plankton research should also include relatively simple turbidity measurements.

Diel Vertical Distribution of Mesozooplankton Functional Groups in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre: A Case Study

Understanding the diel vertical migration (DVM) patterns of zooplankton has important implications for biological pumping and pelagic food webs. The functional traits of zooplankton generally determine their distribution in the environment. However, knowledge about the DVM patterns of zooplankton with different functional traits is limited. Here, we used a trait-based approach to study the vertical distributions of zooplankton in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG). Four functional traits, namely, body length, feeding type, trophic group, and reproductive mode, were selected in this study. A high biodiversity of zooplankton (165 taxa) was recorded in the NPSG. Zooplankton was mainly concentrated above 100 m and exhibited normal DVM. Zooplankton with small and medium body sizes (&amp;lt;2 mm, 69% ± 16%), current feeding (43% ± 14%), and omnivore–herbivores (54% ± 14%) were dominant in the NPSG. The proportion of sac spawners in total abundance (52% ± 14%) was higher than that of broadcast spawners (48% ± 14%), which differed from that in the coastal regions. Sixteen functional groups of zooplankton were identified. Different functional groups exhibited distinct DVM patterns due to the influence of different factors. The DVM patterns of current-feeding omnivore–herbivores were significantly correlated with chlorophyll a, whereas giant ambush-feeding carnivores exhibited normal DVM patterns and were substantially correlated with the vertical distribution of their food organisms. However, the small omnivore–carnivores showed reverse DVM patterns. Overall, this study provided a new perspective for studies on zooplankton DVM from the aspect of functional traits.

Seasonal and diel variations in the vertical distribution, composition, abundance and biomass of zooplankton in a deep Chilean Patagonian Fjord.

Comau Fjord is a stratified Chilean Patagonian Fjord characterized by a shallow brackish surface layer and a >400 m layer of aragonite-depleted subsurface waters. Despite the energetic burden of low aragonite saturation levels to calcification, Comau Fjord harbours dense populations of cold-water corals (CWC). While this paradox has been attributed to a rich supply of zooplankton, supporting abundance and biomass data are so far lacking. In this study, we investigated the seasonal and diel changes of the zooplankton community over the entire water column. We used a Nansen net (100 µm mesh) to take stratified vertical hauls between the surface and the bottom (0-50-100-200-300-400-450 m). Samples were scanned with a ZooScan, and abundance, biovolume and biomass were determined for 41 taxa identified on the web-based platform EcoTaxa 2.0. Zooplankton biomass was the highest in summer (209 g dry mass m−2) and the lowest in winter (61 g dry mass m−2). Abundance, however, peaked in spring, suggesting a close correspondence between reproduction and phytoplankton spring blooms (Chl a max. 50.86 mg m−3, 3 m depth). Overall, copepods were the most important group of the total zooplankton community, both in abundance (64–81%) and biovolume (20–70%) followed by mysids and chaetognaths (in terms of biovolume and biomass), and nauplii and Appendicularia (in terms of abundance). Throughout the year, diel changes in the vertical distribution of biomass were found with a daytime maximum in the 100–200 m depth layer and a nighttime maximum in surface waters (0–50 m), associated with the diel vertical migration of the calanoid copepod family Metridinidae. Diel differences in integrated zooplankton abundance, biovolume and biomass were probably due to a high zooplankton patchiness driven by biological processes (e.g., diel vertical migration or predation avoidance), and oceanographic processes (estuarine circulation, tidal mixing or water column stratification). Those factors are considered to be the main drivers of the zooplankton vertical distribution in Comau Fjord.

Daily vertical distribution of zooplankton in two oligo-mesotrophic north Patagonian lakes (39° S, Chile).

The zooplankton communities often exhibit daily vertical migrations to avoid natural ultraviolet radiation and/or fish predation. However there is no information on this topic in Chilean North Patagonian lakes up to date. Therefore, this study deals with a first characterization of plankton crustacean daily vertical migration in two temperate, oligotrophic lakes (Villarrica and Panguipulli lakes, 39°S) in Southern Chile. Zooplankton were collected at different depths intervals (0-10m, 10-20 m, 20-30m, 30-40m) at early morning, middle day, evening and night in the studied site. The results revealed that zooplankton species (Daphnia pulex, Ceriodaphnia dubia, Neobosmina chilensis, Mesocyclops araucanus, and Tropocyclops prasinus) are abundant in surface zones at night, early morning and evening, whereas at middle day the zooplankton abundances are high at deep zones. The results agree with observations for Argentinean and North American lakes where these daily migration patterns in crustacean zooplankton species were reported due mainly natural ultraviolet radiation exposure, whereas for northern hemisphere lakes the vertical migration is due to combined effect of natural ultraviolet radiation and fish predation exposure.

Environmental effects on Calanus finmarchicus abundance and depth distribution in the Barents Sea

Abstract The vertical migrations performed by zooplankton at daily and seasonal scales are important for marine ecosystem dynamics and biogeochemical cycles. We analysed associations between seasonal variation in abundance and depth distribution of the copepod Calanus finmarchicus and temperature and predation pressure from visual (capelin and herring) and non-visual (ctenophores) predators, using data from a &amp;gt; 30-year survey in the southwestern Barents Sea. Calanus finmarchicus abundances were significantly reduced in upper waters with increased capelin biomass, possibly due to a combination of predation mortality and active avoidance of the upper layer. The weighted mean depth of Calanus finmarchicus tended to become shallower, and abundances in deeper layers lower, with a high probability of ctenophore occurrence, possibly due to a predation effect at depth. Temperature influenced the seasonal timing of Calanus finmarchicus, but appeared less important for depth distribution. This study illustrates how climate-driven changes in the physical and biological environment can influence the seasonal and vertical distribution of zooplankton, which has major implications for the flow of energy and nutrients in marine ecosystems.

Seasonal variation of the sound-scattering zooplankton vertical distribution in the oxygen-deficient waters of the NE Black Sea

Abstract. At the northeastern Black Sea research site, observations from 2010–2020 allowed us to study the dynamics and evolution of the vertical distribution of mesozooplankton in oxygen-deficient conditions via analysis of sound-scattering layers associated with dominant zooplankton aggregations. The data were obtained with profiler mooring and zooplankton net sampling. The profiler was equipped with an acoustic Doppler current meter, a conductivity–temperature–depth probe, and fast sensors for the concentration of dissolved oxygen [O2]. The acoustic instrument conducted ultrasound (2 MHz) backscatter measurements at three angles while being carried by the profiler through the oxic zone. For the lower part of the oxycline and the hypoxic zone, the normalized data of three acoustic beams (directional acoustic backscatter ratios, R) indicated sound-scattering mesozooplankton aggregations, which were defined by zooplankton taxonomic and quantitative characteristics based on stratified net sampling at the mooring site. The time series of ∼ 14 000 R profiles as a function of [O2] at depths where [O2] &lt; 200 µm were analyzed to determine month-to-month variations of the sound-scattering layers. From spring to early autumn, there were two sound-scattering maxima corresponding to (1) daytime aggregations, mainly formed by diel-vertical-migrating copepods Calanus euxinus and Pseudocalanus elongatus and chaetognaths Parasagitta setosa, usually at [O2] = 15–100 µm, and (2) a persistent monospecific layer of the diapausing fifth copepodite stages of C. euxinus in the suboxic zone at 3 µm &lt; [O2] &lt; 10 µm. From late autumn to early winter, no persistent deep sound-scattering layer was observed. At the end of winter, the acoustic backscatter was basically uniform in the lower part of the oxycline and the hypoxic zone. The assessment of the seasonal variability of the sound-scattering mesozooplankton layers is important for understanding biogeochemical processes in oxygen-deficient waters.

Composition, density and spatial distribution of zooplankton on wet season (June-August) in Inner Ambon Bay

Inner Ambon Bay is part of Ambon Bay, it is semi closed area and is a small pelagic fish fishing ground, especially anchovy. The anchovy is zooplankton predator therefore existence of anchovy is affected by abundance of zooplankton. The aim of the research are to know composition, density and spatial distribution of the zooplankton during wet season (June to August). Data of zooplankton composition were obtained from sampling by using plankton net at 10 observation stations, meanwhile, data of densities were collected using scientific hydroacoustic system, BioSonic DTX, on six parallel transect lines and one cross-parallel transect line. Geostatistical analyses technique was used to describe horizontal distributions of zooplankton and vertical distributions were plot in the graphs. The result shows that zooplankton community dominated by Copepod and meroplankton. Highest density was found on August (9393/m2 ), while lowest density was on June (903 ind./m2 ). Vertical distribution of zooplankton shows that highest density was found near surface and decrease to deeper water coloumn. On the horizontal distribution, lower densities (0 – 400 ind./m2 ) occupy wider space, they evenly distributed in western, middle (north to south) and east, on the contrary, higher densities (3000- 5000 ind./m2 ) occupy smaller space i.e in the south-west, south and east to north-east of Inner Ambon Bay

Composition, density and spatial distribution of zooplankton on 1st transition season (March to May) in Inner Ambon Bay Waters, Indonesia

Inner Ambon Bay is part of Ambon Bay that covered an area about 11.03 km2. It is semi-closed and become a small pelagic fish fishing ground, especially anchovy. The anchovy is a zooplankton predator, hence, the abundance of anchovy is dependent on the abundance of zooplankton. The research aims to analyze the composition, density, and spatial distribution of the zooplankton during the 1st transition season (March to May). Data of zooplankton composition were attained from sampling by using plankton net at ten observation stations, meanwhile, data of densities were obtained using a scientific hydroacoustic system on six parallel transect lines and one cross-parallel transect line. The study shows that the zooplankton community is dominated by Copepod and meroplankton. The highest density was found in March, while the lowest density was in April. Vertical distribution of zooplankton shows that the highest density was found near the surface (0-4 m) and decrease to a deeper water column. On the horizontal distribution, lower densities (0 – 400 ind./m2) occupy a wider area, they are evenly distributed in western, middle, and eastern, in the contrary, higher densities (3,000-4,000 ind./m2) occupy smaller space viz. in the southwest and east of Inner Ambon Bay.

Zooplankton and profundal macroinvertebrate responses to hypolimnetic oxygenation in North Twin Lake, Washington

Hypolimnetic oxygenation (HO) has been used to address lake eutrophication and fish habitat limitations, but details on zooplankton and profundal macroinvertebrate community responses are required to fully understand the trophic linkages and impacts. Compared to adjacent South Twin Lake (an unoxygenated reference), zooplankton and profundal macroinvertebrate densities and distributions were altered by HO in North Twin Lake. Overall, temporal trends in zooplankton density were similar between lakes despite oxygenation, suggesting annual and seasonal influences remained a primary factor affecting their density trends. During the day, Chaoborus density was significantly greater in the water column of unoxygenated South Twin Lake compared to oxygenated North Twin Lake (P < 0.0001) as the oxygenated hypolimnion no longer provided refuge from fish predation. Daphnia and copepod densities were greater in North Twin Lake during oxygenation compared to South Twin Lake (P = 0.0011 and P = 0.0005), which may reflect increases in zooplankton habitat availability and reduced predation from Chaoborus in response to HO. With higher levels of dissolved oxygen near the sediment–water interface in North Twin Lake, larval Chaoborus and chironomid densities in the benthic sediments were significantly higher compared to South Twin Lake (P < 0.0001 in both cases). Vertical distribution of zooplankton likely reflected some balance between habitat availability, energetic costs, and predation risk. Lakes with different fish species assemblages may not respond similarly, so managers should reflect on lake similarities between North Twin Lake and systems they manage to understand potential effects of HO and how those effects align with management objectives.

Previous studies in Lake Sevan during summer stratification have shown that the highest zooplankton abundance and biomass was found at the lower boundary of the epilimnion. At the same time, whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus), being main planktivorous species in the lake, preferred the hypolimnion, but was leaving this layer if dissolved oxygen concentrations decreased to 1–5 mg/L. The study was conducted in Bolshoy Sevan (the southern part of Lake Sevan) on July 29–30, 2019. The vertical profiles of water temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration, as well as distribution of major taxonomic groups of aquatic organisms were assessed four times a day: in the dark (night time), in the light (day time), and in twilight (morning and evening). Fish population density was assessed using a “Simrad EK80” echosounder. Vertical distribution of zooplankton and fish observed within the study period did not correspond to that described earlier. Maximal zooplankton biomass during the study was recorded in the hypolimnion, and minimal biomass, in the epilimnion. Most of fish (89–100%) located in the metalimnion. At night, about 10% of the fish population descended to the hypolimnion, despite the low dissolved oxygen concentrations found there (3.0–3.1 mg/L). At dawn, about 7% of the fish ascended to the epilimnion, reaching a 7-m depth, where the water temperature was 20.8 °C. The water temperature range preferred by most fish individuals varied during the observation period and did not correspond to previously reported ranges.

Bowhead whales use two foraging strategies in response to fine-scale differences in zooplankton vertical distribution

As zooplanktivorous predators, bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) must routinely locate patches of prey that are energy-rich enough to meet their metabolic needs. However, little is known about how the quality and quantity of prey might influence their feeding behaviours. We addressed this question using a new approach that included: (1) multi-scale biologging and unmanned aerial system observations of bowhead whales in Cumberland Sound, Nunavut (Canada), and (2) an optical plankton counter (OPC) and net collections to identify and enumerate copepod prey species through the water column. The OPC data revealed two prey layers comprised almost exclusively of lipid-rich calanoid copepods. The deep layer contained fewer, but larger, particles (10% greater overall biomass) than the shallow prey layer. Dive data indicated that the whales conducted long deep Square-shaped dives (80% of dives; averaging depth of 260.4 m) and short shallow Square-shaped dives (16%; averaging depth of 22.5 m) to feed. The whales tended to dive proportionally more to the greater biomass of zooplankton that occurred at depth. Combining behavioural recordings with prey sampling showed a more complex feeding ecology than previously understood, and provides a means to evaluate the energetic balance of individuals under current environmental conditions.

Copepod Behavior Responses Around Internal Waves

Internal waves are ubiquitous features in coastal marine environments and have been observed to mediate vertical distributions of zooplankton. Internal waves possess fine-scale hydrodynamic cues that copepods and other zooplankton are known to sense, such as fluid density gradients and velocity gradients (quantified as shear strain rate). The role of copepod behavior in response to cues associated with internal waves is largely unknown. The objective is to provide insight to the bio-physical interaction and the role of biological versus physical forcing in mediating organism distributions. A laboratory-scale internal wave apparatus is designed to facilitate fine scale observations of copepod behavior in flows that replicate in situ conditions of internal waves in two-layer stratification. An experimental configuration is presented with a density jump of 1 sigma_t. Theoretical analysis of the two-layer system provided guidance to the target forcing frequency needed to generate a standing internal wave with a single dominate frequency of oscillation. Flow visualization and signal processing of the interface location were used to quantify the wave characteristics. The results show a close match to the target wave parameters. Marine copepod (mixed population of Acartia tonsa, Temora longicornis, and Eurytemora affinis) behavior assays were conducted for three different physical arrangements: (1) no density stratification (i.e. control), (2) stagnant two-layer density stratification, and (3) two-layer density stratification with internal wave motion. Digitized trajectories of copepod swimming behavior indicate that in the control (case 1) the animals showed no preferential aggregation. In the stagnant density jump treatment (case 2) copepods preferentially moved horizontally, parallel to the density interface. In the internal wave treatment (case 3) copepods demonstrated loopy, orbital trajectories near the density interface. Analysis of advected trajectories in the internal wave, with and without superimposed copepod swimming, reveal distinct differences with the observed copepod trajectories in the internal wave treatment. These differences and a consideration of the potential hydrodynamic cues indicate that copepod behavior response has a substantial influence on the swimming trajectories in the internal wave region.
