A comparative analysis of soil organic carbon stock and soil aggregation in two crop sequences in the Rolling Pampa (Argentina)

Understanding how farming practices affect soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation is essential for sustainable agriculture. Agronomic decisions, such as crop sequence, significantly influence various soil properties. However, the overall benefits of crop rotation on soil structure and SOC storage remain uncertain. We compared the effects of soybean (Glycine max L.) monocropping with a three-year crop rotation comprising wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)/soybean double crop, maize (Zea mays L.), and soybean on the vertical distribution of SOC up to one metre depth. Additionally, we examined carbon accumulation as particulate organic matter-carbon (POM-C), soil aggregation, and structural stability in the topsoil. Compared to monocropping, crop rotation increased SOC concentrations (19 vs. 16 gC kg soil⁻¹), stock (12 vs. 10.7 MgC ha⁻¹), and POM-C content (6 vs. 3.2 gC kg soil⁻¹) in the first 5 cm of soil. At 20–65 cm depth, rotation showed a marginal increment of SOC stock with respect to soybean monocropping. The increased surface SOC content in the rotation positively affected the POM-C content and macro-aggregation. However, soil structural stability showed a tendency to be higher in the monocropping, especially at a depth of 5–20 cm. Overall, crop rotation demonstrated potential for enhanced carbon sequestration in temperate agroecosystems within three years, despite not significantly improving soil structural stability.

Optimizing nitrogen and phosphorus application to improve soil organic carbon and alfalfa hay yield in alfalfa fields.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is the principal factor contributing to enhanced soil fertility and also functions as the major carbon sink within terrestrial ecosystems. Applying fertilizer is a crucial agricultural practice that enhances SOC and promotes crop yields. Nevertheless, the response of SOC, active organic carbon fraction and hay yield to nitrogen and phosphorus application is still unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of nitrogen-phosphorus interactions on SOC, active organic carbon fractions and hay yield in alfalfa fields. A two-factor randomized group design was employed in this study, with two nitrogen levels of 0 kg·ha-1 (N0) and 120 kg·ha-1 (N1) and four phosphorus levels of 0 kg·ha-1 (P0), 50 kg·ha-1 (P1), 100 kg·ha-1 (P2) and 150 kg·ha-1 (P3). The results showed that the nitrogen and phosphorus treatments increased SOC, easily oxidized organic carbon (EOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and hay yield in alfalfa fields, and increased with the duration of fertilizer application, reaching a maximum under N1P2 or N1P3 treatments. The increases in SOC, EOC, DOC, POC, MBC content and hay yield in the 0-60 cm soil layer of the alfalfa field were 9.11%-21.85%, 1.07%-25.01%, 6.94%-22.03%, 10.36%-44.15%, 26.46%-62.61% and 5.51%-23.25% for the nitrogen and phosphorus treatments, respectively. The vertical distribution of SOC, EOC, DOC and POC contents under all nitrogen and phosphorus treatments was highest in the 0-20 cm soil layer and tended to decrease with increasing depth of the soil layer. The MBC content was highest in the 10-30 cm soil layer. DOC/SOC, MBC/SOC (excluding N0P1 treatment) and POC/SOC were all higher in the 0-40 cm soil layer of the alfalfa field compared to the N0P0 treatment, indicating that the nitrogen and phosphorus treatments effectively improved soil fertility, while EOC/SOC and DOC/SOC were both lower in the 40-60 cm soil layer than in the N0P0 treatment, indicating that the nitrogen and phosphorus treatments improved soil carbon sequestration potential. The soil layer between 0-30 cm exhibited the highest sensitivity index for MBC, whereas the soil layer between 30-60 cm had the highest sensitivity index for POC. This suggests that the indication for changes in SOC due to nitrogen and phosphorus treatment shifted from MBC to POC as the soil depth increased. Meanwhile, except the 20-30 cm layer of soil in the N0P1 treatment and the 20-50 cm layer in the N1P0 treatment, all fertilizers enhanced the soil Carbon management index (CMI) to varying degrees. Structural equation modeling shows that nitrogen and phosphorus indirectly affect SOC content by changing the content of the active organic carbon fraction, and that SOC is primarily impacted by POC and MBC. The comprehensive assessment indicated that the N1P2 treatment was the optimal fertilizer application pattern. In summary, the nitrogen and phosphorus treatments improved soil fertility in the 0-40 cm soil layer and soil carbon sequestration potential in the 40-60 cm soil layer of alfalfa fields. In agroecosystems, a recommended application rate of 120 kg·ha-1 for nitrogen and 100 kg·ha-1 for phosphorus is the most effective in increasing SOC content, soil carbon pool potential and alfalfa hay yield.

Effects of improved water retention by increased soil organic matter on the water balance of arable soils: A numerical analysis

AbstractClimate change will lead to prolonged droughts in various regions of the world, which may significantly affect agricultural production. This is particularly problematic for soils with low water retention capacity, which cannot store sufficient water for crops. In this paper, we investigate how a change in the water‐holding capacity of the soil material, as could be achieved by increasing the soil organic carbon (SOC) amount, affects the components of the soil water balance (evaporation, transpiration, and groundwater recharge). Specifically, we state the hypothesis that an increased water‐holding capacity in a shallow soil layer, as it is achieved through SOC enrichment at the soil surface, will result in more water being stored near the soil surface and lost to unproductive evaporation, thereby reducing the amount of water available to plants and groundwater recharge. The hypothesis was tested by numerical simulations, employing the Hydrus‐1D program package to model the water balance in a soil–plant–atmosphere system for an arable crop in hydrologically contrasting years. The study considered soils with varying textures and different depths of a soil layer with increased SOC content. The soil hydraulic properties (SHP) of the soil material, including the effect of SOC on the SHP, were determined using a recently developed pedotransfer model based on data from over 500 samples. We showed that both the improved water retention by SOC and its vertical distribution affect the soil water balance in a complex manner. In sandy soils, increasing the water‐holding capacity in shallow layers up to 0.1 m led to enhanced evaporation and thus a decrease in water availability for crops. However, deeper incorporated SOC could ameliorate these negative effects. Our findings suggest that not only the amount but also the vertical SOC distribution should be considered if enrichment of SOC shall be applied to mitigate the effect of droughts.

Temporal and spatial effects of crop diversity on soil carbon and nitrogen storage and vertical distribution

Species-diverse plant communities can promote the accumulation of soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (SON) in both natural and semi-natural ecosystems. It is not clear however, how the accumulation and depth distribution of soil C and N might be affected in species-diverse croplands. Using a 15-year crop diversity field experiment, we ask how SOC and SON accumulation and vertical distribution (0-to-100 cm soil depth) changes in response to agricultural diversity, expressed as crop rotation (temporal effect) and intercropping (spatial effect) of staple crop species including wheat and faba bean (C3) and maize (C4). We found that rotation and intercropping across crop combinations altered the depths at which C and N were stored, over the 0–100 cm soil profile, but not the total C and N stored. There was greater SOC storage over the 0–100 cm soil profile in faba bean/maize intercropping than maize-faba bean rotation. Total SOC between 0 and 40 cm soil depth in intercropping increased by 125–164 kg C ha-1 yr-1 compared to rotation systems across crop combinations. However, rotations increased SOC at 60–80 cm in depth by 104 kg ha-1 yr-1 compared to intercropping. Also, SON stocks in rotation systems, at 60–80 cm, increased by 18 kg ha-1 yr-1 compared to intercropping systems. The accumulation and vertical distribution of SOC3 derived from roots of wheat and faba bean contributed to increase total SOC stocks and SOC vertical distribution. SOC4 derived from roots of maize did not have the same effect. Crop rotations promoted deeper root-associated SOC3 accumulation whereas intercropping promoted shallower root-associated SOC3 accumulation. Our study demonstrates how the type of crop diversification influences soil C and N sequestration via regulating root distribution, root composition and root decomposition. These findings have practical implications for soil C and N management in croplands.

Amount and Vertical Distribution of Soil Organic Carbon and Total Nitrogen in a Dry Tropical Forest Ecosystem, Tanzania

There is a growing interest in understanding soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) of various ecosystems worldwide, because they are important indicators of soil quality and soil fertility, especially on the availability of essential nutrients for plant growth; and climate change mitigation. We tested the hypothesis that the amount and vertical distribution of SOC and TN in 0-30cm and 30-100cm depths differ significantly in miombo woodland ecosystems. Soil samples were collected from 15m-radius circular plots (n=33). SOC was determined by Mid-Infrared (MIR) spectroscopy (ICRAF approach) and the Walkley and Black method (NAFORMA approach). The mean amount of SOC and TN at 30-100cm depth were significantly higher (<i>p</i>=0.003 and <i>p</i>=0.0001, respectively) than that within the 0-30cm depth. The amount of SOC at 20-40cm (39tCha^-1) was found to be significantly (<i>p</i>=0.0007) higher than at 0-20cm (32tCha^-1) followed by decreasing pattern to 100cm. On the other hand, TN decreased substantially from 0-20cm to 100cm depth. SOC was significantly (<i>p</i><0.05) and positively correlated with TN. The NAFORMA approach estimated significantly (<I>P</I><<i>0.05</i>) higher SOC than ICRAF approach. Clearing of forests for sesame cultivation invariably resulted in increased nitrogen in the top soil due to addition of ammonium fertilizers, but loss of SOC is due to removal of biomass (including slash burning) and a reduction in the quantity and quality of organic inputs added to the soil. Accurate estimation of SOC at national and regional scales should use the modern methods complimented by the standard methods in different ecosystems.

Effects of common European tree species on soil microbial resource limitation, microbial communities and soil carbon

Studies of tree species effects on soils have revealed a significant impact on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and the carbon (C) distribution between forest floor and mineral soil, but the underlying mechanisms including the roles of litter traits, soil properties, and microbiome remain unclear. To address this challenge, we tested the effect of six common European tree species on the quality and nutrient availability of soil organic matter (SOM) as perceived by the naturally assembled microbial communities and explored the possible links between soil enzyme activities (EAs), microbial resource limitation, and microbial community with SOC stocks. The six studied tree species (Acer pseudoplatanus L., Fraxinus excelsior L, Fagus sylvatica L., Quercus robur L., Tilia cordata L., and Picea abies L.) were planted in common garden monocultures more than 40 years ago at six sites across Denmark. In forest floor, microbial biomass C, fungal and total microbial biomass and fungi to bacteria (F/B) ratios decreased with decreasing litter quality. Ecoenzymatic stoichiometry and relative EAs indicated that microbes in spruce forest floor were more limited by phosphorus (P) than in maple, lime, and beech, while microbes in mineral soils were less P limited in spruce than in other monocultures. Mineral soil under the tree species associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi had higher microbial C and P limitation, bacterial biomass and total microbial biomass than under tree species associated with ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi. Our results indicated that tree species with high-quality litter (i.e. AM-associated trees) had (i) higher microbial biomass and less nutrient limitation that were conducive to higher decomposition rates and lower C stocks in the forest floor, and (ii) such tree species could lead to both greater stabilization of mineral soil C by mineral-associated OM formation and greater microbial mineralization of SOM with higher microbial resource demand. The results suggest that tree species-mediated EA, microbial resource limitation and microbial community composition are important drivers of stocks and vertical distribution of SOC among tree species and between the two types of associated mycorrhiza.

Spring pasture renewal involving full inversion tillage and a summer crop can facilitate soil C storage, improve crop yields and lower N leaching

Soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in pastoral soils could offset net greenhouse gas emissions by reducing global atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and, thereby, slow climate warming. Long-term pastures typically have topsoils (0–10 cm) rich in SOC, with subsoils (10–30 cm) storing less than half as much SOC. In New Zealand, lowland farmers are advised to renew (reseed) their pastures every 7–10 years to improve pasture production. Renewal typically involves desiccating the old pasture followed by shallow tillage (or direct drilling) to establish a short season forage crop as a weed break, then direct drilling new pasture species. Minimum till at renewal maintains the vertical stratification of SOC, limiting the scope to increase SOC stocks under new pasture. During the spring of 2016 and 2017, two independent trials were established, on an Alfisol (trial 1) and on an Andisol (trial 2), to assess the effects of establishing a summer Brassica crop with either full inversion tillage (FIT; 30 cm furrow depth, as a one-off or infrequent (every 25–30 years) management), shallow tillage or no-till (direct drill) on SOC stocks and crop/pasture agronomic performance. In autumn, new pasture species were direct drilled into the stubble of the summer forage crop. Changes in SOC vertical distribution, plant growth, herbage quality (at both trials) and nitrogen (N) leaching (trial 1 only) were monitored. At both trials, FIT effectively buried SOC below 0–10 cm depth and increased crop yields compared to no-till treatment. After re-grassing pasture production was similar among all treatments. In trial 1, N leaching losses were 42% lower under FIT than under no-till. These results highlight the potential agronomic and environmental benefits of pasture renewal including FIT. Economic and N cycling benefits depend on the timely inclusion of a crop phase.

Soil fauna drives vertical redistribution of soil organic carbon in a long-term irrigated dry pine forest.

Summer droughts strongly affect soil organic carbon (SOC) cycling, but net effects on SOC storage are unclear as drought affects both C inputs and outputs from soils. Here, we explored the overlooked role of soil fauna on SOC storage in forests, hypothesizing that soil faunal activity is particularly drought‐sensitive, thereby reducing litter incorporation into the mineral soil and, eventually, long‐term SOC storage.In a drought‐prone pine forest (Switzerland), we performed a large‐scale irrigation experiment for 17 years and assessed its impact on vertical SOC distribution and composition. We also examined litter mass loss of dominant tree species using different mesh‐size litterbags and determined soil fauna abundance and community composition.The 17‐year‐long irrigation resulted in a C loss in the organic layers (−1.0 kg C m−2) and a comparable C gain in the mineral soil (+0.8 kg C m−2) and thus did not affect total SOC stocks. Irrigation increased the mass loss of Quercus pubescens and Viburnum lantana leaf litter, with greater effect sizes when meso‐ and macrofauna were included (+215%) than when excluded (+44%). The enhanced faunal‐mediated litter mass loss was paralleled by a many‐fold increase in the abundance of meso‐ and macrofauna during irrigation. Moreover, Acari and Collembola community composition shifted, with a higher presence of drought‐sensitive species in irrigated soils. In comparison, microbial SOC mineralization was less sensitive to soil moisture. Our results suggest that the vertical redistribution of SOC with irrigation was mainly driven by faunal‐mediated litter incorporation, together with increased root C inputs.Our study shows that soil fauna is highly sensitive to natural drought, which leads to a reduced C transfer from organic layers to the mineral soil. In the longer term, this potentially affects SOC storage and, therefore, soil fauna plays a key but so far largely overlooked role in shaping SOC responses to drought.

Long-term effects of tillage and nitrogen fertilization on soil C and N fractions in a corn–soybean rotation

Tillage and nitrogen (N) fertilization can influence soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics, but their interactive effects remain contradictory. A long-term (25 yr) corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) rotation was used to investigate the effect of tillage [moldboard plow (MP) and no-till (NT)] and N rates (0, 80, and 160 kg N·ha−1) on soil organic carbon (SOC), total N (STN), respiration, and SOM fractions [particulate organic matter (POMC, POMN), mineral-associated organic matter (MAOMC, MAOMN), and microbial biomass (MBC, MBN)]. Results indicate that NT had 27% higher SOC and 24% higher STN than MP in the 0–20 cm depth. Furthermore, SOC and STN stocks (0–20 cm) were 22% and 20% higher, respectively, under NT than MP. There was significant stratification under NT, with a rather uniform distribution under MP. The SOM fractions and soil respiration were 28%–275% and 20%–83% higher at the 0–5 and 5–10 cm depths, respectively, under NT than MP. Interestingly, N fertilizer rate or its interaction with tillage had no impact, except for respiration (tillage × N rate and N rate × depth). Hence, while N addition was required for adequate grain production and increased cumulative plant C and N inputs, our findings indicate that the vertical distribution of SOC, STN, and SOM fractions was affected by tillage, thereby influencing resource accessibility and subsequent dynamics of SOM fractions. Taken together, our results support the adoption of NT and judicious use of N fertilizers for enhancing topsoil SOM storage and fertility under humid temperate conditions.

On the spatial variability and influencing factors of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks in a desert oasis ecotone of northwestern China

Accurate assessments of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) stocks and controlling factors are essential for understanding carbon and nitrogen sequestration in soil. In this study, we analyzed the spatial distribution and influencing factors of SOC and TN stocks to the depth of 3 m in a desert oasis ecotone of northwestern China. The study area has experienced large-scale transition of dunelands to irrigated croplands in the past 40–50 years. The results showed that the vertical distributions of SOC and TN stocks were well demonstrated by quadratic function forms. The SOC and TN stocks at 0–3 m depths in nabkha dunes were generally significantly higher than that in bare sand dunes. Additionally, after converting nabkha dunes to croplands, both SOC and TN stocks at the top 0.4 m depths increased with the extension of cultivation years, the mean SOC and TN stocks significantly increased from 0.396 to 0.992 kg·m−2 and from 0.053 to 0.096 kg·m−2, respectively. The strongest heterogeneity of SOC and TN generally appeared at top 0–0.4 m depths and decreased with the depth. The SOC and TN stocks in the nabkha dunes near the water areas were relatively higher, which may be suitable for croplands reclamation. It is noteworthy that land use brought a major influence of SOC and TN at top 0–0.4 m depths, whereas soil texture (clay and silt contents) was the main factor that controlled SOC and TN at deep soil depths (1–3 m). The results indicate that the nabkha dunes also increased carbon and nitrogen stocks throughout the entire 3 m soil profiles. While the demand for food is almost certain to increase in arid and semiarid China and other regions worldwide, the conversion from non-traditional croplands such as dunelands to croplands is likely going to continue.

Vertical distribution analysis of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen in different land use patterns of an agro-organic farm

While the quantity of soil organic carbon and nitrogen are used as indices of soil quality assessment and sustainable land use management, soil microbial activity is also a sensitive indicator of soil quality. Though the dynamics of carbon and nitrogen in terrestrial ecosystem can be largely affected by macro factors such as climatic conditions, local micro environmental factors such as land use history, plant functional type and management practices also play an important role in this regard. The present study was aimed at assessing and analyzing different types of land use patterns so as to understand their influence on the depth wise distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN) and microbial activity under the same management practices. The investigation was carried out in an organic farm located at Anand, Gujarat, India. Three different types of land use patterns viz., (i) fodder grass raising land, (ii) teak woodland, and (iii) wheat-pearl millet cropland were selected. Vertical (0–100 cm depth) variation in soil biophysical properties was recorded. Analysis of variance showed SOC (%) and TN (%) varied significantly (P < 0.001) with land use patterns (LU), depth (D), and LUxD. It was found that at all three land use patterns SOC and TN were highest at upper layer (0–10 cm) then decreased towards deeper layers (up to 40 cm) and then again increased with depth (40–100 cm) in soil profile. Highest values of SOC (%) and TN (%) (1.02% and 0.08% respectively), were reported in wheat-pearl millet cropland at 0–10 cm depth. Use of organic amendment made a great impact on SOC (%) in wheat pearl-millet cropland throughout the soil profile. We found almost same quantity of SOC (%) at 0–10 cm and 80–100 cm in teak woodland and grass raising land. The microbial biomass (carbon and nitrogen) and dehydrogenase activity were also found to be highest at upper layer (0–10 cm) in wheat-pearl millet cropland (418.2 µg/g, 52.9 µg/g and 104.05 TPF µg/g respectively) as compared to other two types of land use patterns. A significant positive correlation was observed between soil organic carbon and total nitrogen with microbial biomass and dehydrogenase activity at all three land use patterns. Our findings suggest that changes in land use pattern and management practices make a significant impact on vertical distribution of SOC and TN. Accurate investigation of SOC and TN storage at regional levels is important for detecting changes in carbon and nitrogen sequestration potentials induced by land use changes over a period of time to enable the rebuilding of SOC and TN in agro-ecosystems.

Vertical distributions of soil microbial biomass carbon: a global dataset.

Soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) is important in regulating soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics along soil profiles by mediating the decomposition and formation of SOC. The dataset (VDMBC) is about the vertical distributions of SOC, SMBC, and soil microbial quotient (SMQ = SMBC/SOC) and their relations to environmental factors across five continents. Data were collected from literature, with a total of 289 soil profiles and 1040 observations in different soil layers compiled. The associated environment data collectd include climate, ecosystem types, and edaphic factors. We developed this dataset by searching the Web of Sciene and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure from the year of 1970 to 2019. All the data in this dataset met two creteria: 1) there were at least three mineral soil layers along a soil profile, and 2) SMBC was measured using the fumigation extraction method. The data in tables and texts were obtained from literature directly, and the data in figures were extracted by using the GetData Graph digitizer software version 2.25. When climate and soil properties were not available from publications, we obtainted the data from the World Weather Information Service (https://worldweather.wmo.int/en/home.html) and SoilGrids at a spatial resolution of 250 meters (version 0.5.3, https://soilgrids.org).The units of all the variables were converted to the standard international units or commonly used ones and the values were transformed correspondingly. For example, the value of soil organic matter (SOM) was converted to SOC by using the equation (SOC = SOM × 0.58).This dataset can be used in predicting global SOC changes along soil profiles by using the multi-layer soil carbon models. It can also be used to analyse how soil microbial biomass changes with plant roots as well as the composition, structure, and functions of soil microbial communities along soil profiles at large spatial scales. This dataset offers opportunities to improve our prediction of SOC dynamics under global changes and to advance our understanding of the environmental controls.

Patterns and environmental controls of soil organic carbon density in Chinese shrublands

The soils of shrublands are important for organic carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems, but geographical patterns and environmental controls of soil organic carbon (SOC) remain largely understudied compared to other terrestrial ecosystems, leaving a significant gap in our understanding of terrestrial ecosystem carbon budgets. Here, we quantified SOC density (SOCD) and its potential determinants based on a comprehensive dataset with a consistent stratified random sampling of extensive soil profiles down to the parent material or to one meter depth across 1211 sites across China. Our up-to-date estimate of SOCD in Chinese shrublands is an average of 8.36 kg m−2, and ca. 43% of SOC is stored in the upper 20 cm relative to the one meter top soil, which is higher than estimates for shrublands globally. We also observed that SOCD was positively related to shrubland biomass and more so with belowground biomass. Furthermore, SOCD was positively related to mean annual precipitation (MAP), soil total nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), clay and silt percent, but decreased with increasing mean annual temperature (MAT). Dark felty soils stored the highest SOCD and frigid desert soils stored the lowest. Soil total nitrogen (N), MAP, soil type, MAT, and belowground biomass, soil clay, and pH were the best predictors of total SOCD in Chinese shrublands. We concluded that Chinese shrubland soils store the lowest density of organic carbon so far recorded compared to forests and grasslands, and that the vertical distribution of SOC in Chinese shrublands was much shallower. While both climate (in particular MAP) and soil total N exerted dominant control over geographical patterns of SOCD across Chinese shrublands, soil type also played a significant role. Our study also emphasizes this key role of edaphic variables in determining the SOCD of shrublands and that they should be better incorporated into large-scale assessments of SOC dynamics. Our study extends existing work conducted in forest and grasslands and provides the most up-to-date knowledge on benchmark values for SOCD in Chinese shrublands, with important implications for predicting the fate of C stored in shrubland soils in response to climate change.

Modelling and mapping soil organic carbon stocks in Brazil

Brazil has extensive forests and savannas on deep weathered soils and plays a key role in the discussions about carbon sequestration, but the distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks up to 1 m depth has not been investigated in Brazil using machine learning techniques. In this study, we applied a methodological framework to optimize the prediction of SOC stocks for the entire Brazilian territory and determine how the environmental heterogeneity of Brazil influences the SOC stocks distribution. We used a legacy dataset of 8227 soil profiles which consisted of 37,693 samples. For each profile, the vertical distribution of SOC and bulk density were interpolated to standard depths (0–5, 5–15, 15–30, 30–60 and 60–100 cm) using mass preserving equal-area quadratic splines. The covariates database was composed of 74 variables including bioclimatic (temperature and precipitation) data, soil and biome maps, vegetation indexes and morphometric maps derived from a digital elevation model, with a 1 km spatial resolution. To obtain the best prediction performance, we tested four machine learning algorithms: Random Forests, Cubist, Generalized Linear Model Boosting and Support Vector Machines. Random Forests showed the best performance in predicting SOC stocks for all depths, with the highest performance at 30–60 cm for training (R2 = 0.32) and validation (R2 = 0.33); hence, it was selected for the spatial prediction of SOC stocks. The most important covariates selected by Random Forests using the recursive feature elimination were: soil class, sum of monthly mean temperature (SAMT), precipitation, slope height and vegetation indexes (NDVI, GPP). In total, Brazilian soils store approximately 71.3 PgC within the top 100 cm, where the first 0–30 cm contains almost 36 PgC. Approximately 31% of the total SOC stocks (22.2 PgC) occurs in protected areas (2.6 million km2), which are not subjected to land use pressure and carbon losses. Although the Amazon biome has the highest amount of stored SOC (36.1 PgC), its soils do not represent a good potential for carbon accumulation. Among soil classes, the Luvisols showed the lowest SOC density (6.45 kg m−2) and the Histosols presented the highest values (14.87 kg m−2). More than 57% of the total SOC was found in nutrient-poor, deep-weathered Ferralsols and Acrisols, which are the dominant soils in Brazil. The presented methodological framework covers all steps of prediction process, building maps with known accuracy and has great potential to be used in future soil carbon inventories at large scales. Concerning conservation issues, the results highlight the importance of nature reserves for protecting SOC in the long-term.

Land cover and landform-based upscaling of soil organic carbon stocks on the Brøgger Peninsula, Svalbard

ABSTRACTIn this study we assess the total storage, landscape distribution, and vertical partitioning of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks on the Brøgger Peninsula, Svalbard. This type of high Arctic area is underrepresented in SOC databases for the northern permafrost region. Physico-chemical, elemental, and radiocarbon (14C) dating analyses were carried out on thirty-two soil profiles. Results were upscaled using both a land cover classification (LCC) and a landform classification (LFC). Both LCC and LFC approaches provide weighted mean SOC 0–100 cm estimates for the study area of 1.0 ± 0.3 kg C m−2 (95% confidence interval) and indicate that about 68 percent of the total SOC storage occurs in the upper 30 cm of the soil, and about 10 percent occurs in the surface organic layer. Furthermore, LCC and LFC upscaling approaches provide similar spatial SOC allocation estimates and emphasize the dominant role of “vegetated area” (4.2 ± 1.6 kg C m−2) and “solifluction slopes” (6.7 ± 3.6 kg C m−2) in SOC 0–100 cm storage. LCC and LFC approaches report different and complementary information on the dominant processes controlling the spatial and vertical distribution of SOC in the landscape. There is no evidence for any significant SOC storage in the permafrost layer. We hypothesize, therefore, that the Brøgger Peninsula and similar areas of the high Arctic will become net carbon sinks, providing negative feedback on global warming in the future. The surface area that will have vegetation cover and incipient soil development will expand, whereas only small amounts of organic matter will experience increased decomposition due to active-layer deepening.

Desertification control on soil inorganic and organic carbon accumulation in the topsoil of desert grassland in Ningxia, northwest China

Soil carbon is an essential part of the terrestrial carbon pool, which includes soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil inorganic carbon (SIC). Soils contain a huge amount of inorganic carbon in arid and semiarid regions, which may be a potential source of CO2 emitted to the atmosphere. Neglecting soil inorganic carbon could result in erroneous or misleading interpretations of the soil carbon pool of arid and semiarid ecosystems. Nevertheless, only a few studies have focused on variations of SIC, or have further used the soil stable carbon isotope to explore the inherent mechanism of SIC variations in semiarid regions. The study was designed to estimate the dynamic of SOC and SIC with the development of desertification in the topsoil. Here, four desertification stages were chosen, including potential desertification (PD), light desertification (LD), severe desertification (SD), and very severe desertification (VSD) stages, to evaluate the horizontal and vertical distributions of SOC and SIC, and the stable carbon isotope (δ13C) of SOC and SIC with the desertification development in the topsoil (0–30 cm soil layer). The SOC and SIC contents and storage changed significantly with desertification development. The PD stages had the highest SOC (21.01 mg/hm2) and SIC (11.60 mg/hm2) storage at 0–30 cm, while the contrary result for VSD stages, with the average of SOC and SIC, was 8.27 mg/hm2 and 6.15 mg/hm2, respectively. The vertical distribution of SIC and SOC has varied sharply with soil depth. The δ13C-SIC within the 0–30 cm soil profile in the PD stages were more negative than those in other desertification stages and gradually increased with desertification development. In contrast, the δ13C-SOC generally decreased with desertification progress. The entire data (108 soil samples) exhibited that δ13C-SIC were significantly and negatively correlated with δ13C-SOC and SIC content, while SIC storage was significantly and positively correlated with SOC storage. The results demonstrated that an increase of SOC might be related to enhancing accumulation of SIC. The results of this study provide information about the variation of SIC and SOC with the desertification development and contribute to our understanding of the important role of SIC in estimating the carbon sequestration capacity in the degraded grassland ecosystems in arid and semiarid regions.

Hotspots of soil organic carbon storage revealed by laboratory hyperspectral imaging

Subsoil organic carbon (OC) is generally lower in content and more heterogeneous than topsoil OC, rendering it difficult to detect significant differences in subsoil OC storage. We tested the application of laboratory hyperspectral imaging with a variety of machine learning approaches to predict OC distribution in undisturbed soil cores. Using a bias-corrected random forest we were able to reproduce the OC distribution in the soil cores with very good to excellent model goodness-of-fit, enabling us to map the spatial distribution of OC in the soil cores at very high resolution (~53 × 53 µm). Despite a large increase in variance and reduction in OC content with increasing depth, the high resolution of the images enabled statistically powerful analysis in spatial distribution of OC in the soil cores. In contrast to the relatively homogeneous distribution of OC in the plough horizon, the subsoil was characterized by distinct regions of OC enrichment and depletion, including biopores which contained ~2–10 times higher SOC contents than the soil matrix in close proximity. Laboratory hyperspectral imaging enables powerful, fine-scale investigations of the vertical distribution of soil OC as well as hotspots of OC storage in undisturbed samples, overcoming limitations of traditional soil sampling campaigns.

Matrix-Based Sensitivity Assessment of Soil Organic Carbon Storage: A Case Study from the ORCHIDEE-MICT Model.

Modeling of global soil organic carbon (SOC) is accompanied by large uncertainties. The heavy computational requirement limits our flexibility in disentangling uncertainty sources especially in high latitudes. We build a structured sensitivity analyzing framework through reorganizing the Organizing Carbon and Hydrology in Dynamic Ecosystems (ORCHIDEE)‐aMeliorated Interactions between Carbon and Temperature (MICT) model with vertically discretized SOC into one matrix equation, which brings flexibility in comprehensive sensitivity assessment. Through Sobol's method enabled by the matrix, we systematically rank 34 relevant parameters according to variance explained by each parameter and find a strong control of carbon input and turnover time on long‐term SOC storages. From further analyses for each soil layer and regional assessment, we find that the active layer depth plays a critical role in the vertical distribution of SOC and SOC equilibrium stocks in northern high latitudes (>50°N). However, the impact of active layer depth on SOC is highly interactive and nonlinear, varying across soil layers and grid cells. The stronger impact of active layer depth on SOC comes from regions with shallow active layer depth (e.g., the northernmost part of America, Asia, and some Greenland regions). The model is sensitive to the parameter that controls vertical mixing (cryoturbation rate) but only when the vertical carbon input from vegetation is limited since the effect of vertical mixing is relatively small. And the current model structure may still lack mechanisms that effectively bury nonrecalcitrant SOC. We envision a future with more comprehensive model intercomparisons and assessments with an ensemble of land carbon models adopting the matrix‐based sensitivity framework.

Greenhouse gas inventories: Deriving soil organic carbon change factors and assessing soil depth relevance in Argentinean Semiarid Chaco

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is the main terrestrial carbon (C) reservoir. Land use change has depleted SOC stocks and released large amounts of C dioxide (CO2). Thus, the development of reliable tools for SOC stock monitoring at large scale is fundamental to face climate change. Argentinean Semiarid Chaco (ASC) is a deforestation hotspot, but CO2 emissions from soil has been barely assessed. Deforested area was converted into cropland or grassland. We used empirical data to model SOC stocks under native forest (SOCref) and the RothC model to estimate SOC stock change factors under cropland (Fc) and grasslands (Fg) in the ASC. These SOCref's and stock change factors were applied in a Tier 2 (T2) C inventory, following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) proposal. We used SOC vertical distribution models to estimate SOC stock at 0–100 cm soil depth from estimated SOC stocks at 0–30 cm, the default soil depth of IPCC C inventory method. The T2 was run for 1976 through 2012 and under three hypothetical land use change scenarios for 2012 through 2032. The scenarios were: i) land use change ceases, ii) land use change rate is the half of 1996–2012 land use change rate, and iii) land use change rate remains as in 1996–2012. Estimated average SOCref stock at 0–30 cm soil depth was 40 Mg C ha−1 and varied between 35 and 51 Mg C ha−1. Cropland was the main fate of deforested area and the land use with lower SOC stocks. Stock change factors and SOC stocks estimated with T2 were within the range of the empirical data reported in the ASC. However, research about SOC dynamics and land use change is incipient in the ASC and more empirical information is needed to validate T2 estimations. Deforestation in the ASC leads to high CO2 emissions from soil and the only scenario in which those emissions would be reduced is with deforestation cessation. Soil depth considered in greenhouse gas inventories is 0–30 cm, and this strongly underestimates CO2 emissions. We demonstrated that this limitation could be overcome by using SOC vertical distribution models to estimate deep SOC stock (up to 1 m) from estimated surface SOC stock. Hence, these models could be used to improve CO2 estimations from SOC inventories.

Integrating soil analyses with frameworks for ecosystem services and organizational hierarchy of soil systems

ABSTRACTEcosystems provide various goods and services (provisioning, regulating, cultural, and supporting) that benefit humans both directly and indirectly. Soil plays an important role in ecosystem services therefore soil analyses can provide quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate ecosystem goods and services. Soil analyses must be integrated with the frameworks for ecosystem services and existing organizational hierarchy of soil systems to provide missing links to scale, time, degree of computation and complexity. This case study demonstrates the importance of evaluating soil organic carbon (SOC) within this newly proposed context using glaciated soils at the Cornell University Willsboro Research Farm in upstate New York as the example. The vertical distribu tion of SOC was analyzed quantitatively by soil depth class (topsoil versus subsoil), soil order, and other relevant variables that relate to the organizational hierarchy of soil systems.
