Ten-year trends in vertical distribution of radiocesium in Fukushima forest soils, Japan

To elucidate interannual changes in the vertical distribution of 137Cs in forest ecosystems contaminated by the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, we investigated 137Cs inventories in forest soils (both organic and mineral soil horizons) at 10 sampling plots with different 137Cs deposition levels and dominant species for up to 10 years after the accident. We examined the temporal variation of the 137Cs inventories by depth with exponential regression models (assuming that the transition and partitioning of 137Cs are still active) and exponential offset regression models (assuming a shift to a stable 137Cs distribution, defined as the “quasi-equilibrium steady-state” in the Chernobyl accident). In the organic horizon, the 137Cs inventories were exponentially decreasing, and it might take more time to converge in the quasi-equilibrium steady-state at most plots. In the mineral soil horizon, most of 137Cs was found in the surface layer of the mineral soil horizon (0–5 cm). In this layer, the inventories first increased and then become relatively constant, and the exponential offset model was selected at most plots, suggesting entry into the quasi-equilibrium steady-state over the observation period. Although we also observed exponentially increasing trends in a lower layer (5–10 cm) of the mineral soil horizon, there was no clear increasing or decreasing trend of 137Cs inventory in the deeper mineral soil layers (10–15 and 15–20 cm). Our calculation of the relaxation depth and migration center revealed that downward migration of 137Cs is not significant in terms of the overall 137Cs distribution in the mineral soil horizon over 10 years.

Cesium uptake of field-grown Amaranthus species in Fukushima focusing on Cs concentration in xylem exudate and root distribution

ABSTRACT Radiocesium (RCs) discharged by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc.) accident has extensively contaminated agricultural land in Fukushima Prefecture and its neighboring areas. Many studies have demonstrated that Cs (RCs and 133Cs) uptake of plants is affected by the exchangeable K (Ex-K) concentration in soil. However, the precise plant–soil interaction in relation to Cs uptake is still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate Cs uptake of plant in field by focusing on xylem exudate and roots because nutrients in xylem exudate reflect medium (soil) conditions and affect nutrient accumulation in shoots. Two varieties of amaranth, K4 (Amaranthus caudatus L.) and Mexico type (A. hypochondriacus L.), which have different Cs uptake abilities, were grown in four fields and in pots (750 to 3440 Bq kg−1 of RCs) in Fukushima Prefecture. Cs concentrations in xylem exudate, shoot, and soil; Ex-K concentration in soil; and root distribution in soil were determined. RCs concentration in xylem exudate varied from 0.04 to 164 Bq kg−1 and 133Cs concentration in xylem exudate ranged from 0.01 to 33.7 μg kg−1. The Cs concentrations were decreased by the high Ex-K concentration and the large amount of 2:1 type clay minerals in soil. The average of the ratios of Cs concentration in shoot to Cs concentration in xylem exudate for all samples was 127 ± 112 (mean ± standard deviation), although no clear correlation was found between them. The correlations betwee\ RCs and 133Cs concentrations in xylem exudate and shoot were strong in pot and in the field with low Ex-K concentration. Eighty-five percent of the total root length was distributed in the topsoil (0–20 cm soil layer). The positions where roots take up Cs were estimated from the differences in the vertical distribution of RCs and 133Cs concentrations in soil. The estimated Cs uptake ratios of topsoil to total soil layer ranged from 7% to 91% and varied with the concentration and the vertical distribution of Ex-K in soil.

Spatial and vertical distribution of radiocesium in seawater of the East China Sea

The 137Cs activity in surface water of the East China Sea (ECS) was 0.66–1.36 Bq m−3 during May of 2011. The low activities were observed in the Changjiang Estuary and Zhejiang-Fujian coast and high activities were observed in the south offshore and Kuroshio Current pathway, suggesting that the influence from the current system in the ECS. The 134Cs were undetectable (<0.03 Bq m−3) and the contribution of the Fukushima accident to ECS is estimated to be below 3%; hence it is negligible during the investigation period. Using the vertical profiles of 137Cs in the ECS, the mass balance is obtained, which suggests that the oceanic input dominates the 137Cs source in the ECS. 137Cs is potentially useful to trace water mass movement in the ECS. Our study provides comprehensive baseline of 137Cs in the ECS for evaluation of the possible influence of the nuclear power plants in the future.

Vertical distribution of radiocesium in soils of the area affected by the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident

Presented are results of the study of radiocesium vertical distribution in the soils of the irrigation pond catchments in the near field 0.25 to 8 km from the Fukushima Dai-ichi NPP, on sections of the Niida River floodplain, and in a forest ecosystem typical of the territory contaminated after the accident. It is shown that the vertical migration of radiocesium in undisturbed forest and grassland soils in the zone affected by the Fukushima accident is faster than it was in the soils of the 30-km zone of the Chernobyl NPP for a similar time interval after the accident. The effective dispersion coefficients in the Fukushima soils are several times higher than those for the Chernobyl soils. This may be associated with higher annual precipitation (by about 2.5 times) in Fukushima as compared to the Chernobyl zone. In the forest soils the radiocesium dispersion is faster as compared to grassland soils, both in the Fukushima and Chernobyl zones. The study and analysis of the vertical distribution of the Fukushima origin radiocesium in the Niida gawa floodplain soils has made it possible to identify areas of contaminated sediment accumulation on the floodplain. The average accumulation rate for sediments at the study locations on the Niida gawa floodplain varied from 0.3 to 3.3 cm/year. Taking into account the sediments accumulation leading to an increase in the radiocesium inventory in alluvial soils is key for predicting redistribution of radioactive contamination after the Fukushima accident on the river catchments, as well as for decision-making on contaminated territories remediation and clean-up. Clean-up of alluvial soils does not seem to be worthwhile because of the following accumulation of contaminated sediments originating from more contaminated areas, including the exclusion zone.

Radiocesium transfer into the fruit of deciduous fruit trees contaminated during dormancy

Following the accident at the Tokyo Electric Power Company, Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), radiocesium (134Cs + 137Cs) concentrations in deciduous mature fruits were determined in orchards in the northern area of Fukushima Prefecture. At the time of the nuclear accident, most deciduous fruit trees were in the dormant stage prior to bud burst. To evaluate the relationship between radiocesium deposition in the soil and fruit contamination, radiocesium concentrations were measured from the 5-cm topsoil and from six fruit species across 17 orchards in 2011. The vertical distribution of radiocesium in the topsoil (0–30 cm in depth) and its spatial distribution in the 5-cm topsoil underlying the tree canopy of a peach, Prunus persica (L.) Batsh, orchard (“Akatsuki” cultivar) were also investigated. Significant correlations between the radiocesium concentration in the mature fruit and that in the 5-cm topsoil layer were observed for the 17 orchards as well as for the trees of the peach orchard. However, 93% of the 137Cs found in the 30-cm soil core was retained within the top 3 cm of the soil in the peach orchard. Considering the profile of the root of this deciduous fruit tree, we assumed a negligible level of radiocesium uptake via the roots. However, the possibility of inward migration via the bark was undeniable, because some radiocesium adhered to the tree canopy before bud burst while depositing on the soil surface. Additionally, transfer factors for peach and grape, hybrid of Vitis labrusca L. and Vitis vinifera L., from young, uncontaminated trees cultivated with contaminated soil were lower than those previously reported.

Vertical distribution of radiocesium in coniferous forest soil after the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident

This study deals with the description of the vertical distribution of radiocaesium (137Cs and 134Cs) in a representative coniferous forest soil, investigated 10 months after the Fukushima radioactive fallout. During soil sampling, the forest floor components (understory plants, litter (Ol-) and fermented layers (Of)) were collected and treated separately. The results indicate that radiocesium is concentrated in the forest floor, and high radiocesium transfer factor observed in the undergrowth plants (3.3). This made the forest floor an active exchanging interphase for radiocesium. The raw organic layer (Ol + Of) holds 52% (5.3 kBq m−2) of the Fukushima-derived and 25% (0.7 kBq m−2) of the pre-Fukushima 137Cs at the time of the soil sampling. Including the pre-Fukushima 137Cs, 99% of the total soil inventory was in the upper 10 cm, in which the organic matter (OM) content was greater than 10%, suggesting the subsequent distribution most likely depends on the OM turnover. However, the small fraction of the Fukushima-derived 137Cs at a depth of 16 cm is most likely due to the infiltration of radiocesium-circumscribed rainwater during the fallout before that selective adsorption prevails and reduces the migration of soluble 137Cs. The values of the depth distribution parameters revealed that the distribution of the Fukushima-derived 137Cs was somewhat rapid.

Airborne radiocesium in Scots pine and Norway spruce needles

This paper presents the activity of radiocesium ( 134Cs and 137Cs) and chemical composition of Scots pine and Norway spruce needles in southern Finland during the years 1987–1991. In 1991, contents and vertical distribution of radiocesium in soil have been determined both under and between canopies. The total 134Cs content per square meter in soil layers varied within the range of 470–9500 Bq/m 2 in stands of Norway spruce and 1200–2300 Bq/m 2 in stands of Scots pine; the corresponding figures for 137Cs were 5000–88000 and 11 100–28600 Bq/m 2. About 80–90% of the radiocesium was located in the humus and in the first 3 cm of mineral soil. There were no statistically significant differences in the contents of 134Cs and 137Cs in the soil under and between the tree crowns. Most of the 137Cs which originated from nuclear weapons fallout, was in the top mineral soil layers. The radiocesium concentrations in the needles varied considerably from stand to stand. In 1987, with the exception of a few forests, the radiocesium concentrations in the 2-year-old (C + 1) needles were higher than those in the current (C) needles. In the other years, the situation was the opposite. The regression between 137Cs concentration in current needles and the year was linear for pine needles and polynomial for spruce needles.
