Vertical distribution patterns of ichthyoplankton in temperate waters of New Zealand

Multifactorial sampling designs were used to determine the vertical distribution of ichthyoplankton at multiple temporal and spatial scales in New Zealand. Hypotheses concerning the vertical distribution of fish larvae were tested in the following: depth strata, surface, near-surface, mid-depth and deep, and near the substratum. The consistency of abundance patterns was examined at three sites separated by 2–20 km over 2 months. We also tested for differences in shallow water columns of two depths (20 and 40 m) and both day and night. Although peak abundance of total larval fish was found at upper and lower strata, regardless of total depth of the water column, consistent taxa specific patterns of vertical distribution were also found. Some taxa were most abundant at the surface (e.g. mullids, hemiramphids, and kyphosids), whereas others were found at multiple depths below the surface and throughout the water column, regardless of site, time or depth of water column (e.g. carangids, engraulids, clupeids, scombrids, sparids and pleuronectids). Some taxa were most abundant in shallow water columns (e.g. mullids, tripterygiids and gobiids). Rank abundance by depth stratum for non-surface dwelling species varied among sites and times. Diel vertical movements were detected, some taxa (e.g. clupeids, scombrids and bothids) that were most abundant at the surface at night whereas for other taxa this pattern was more variable (e.g. carangids). We conclude that diel depth-related patterns in shallow water columns will influence interactions among taxa and the importance of different transport mechanisms for larval transport.

Diel variation in the vertical distribution of fish larvae forced by upwelling filaments off Punta Angamos (northern Chile)

The role of daily vertical migration (DVM) of ichthyoplanktonic associations off Punta Angamos, in northern Chile, was examined. In September 1998 and January 1999, two oceanographic surveys were conducted during coastal upwelling events. Fish larvae were collected during the day/night in three depth strata (0-20, 20-80 and 80-200 m) and inside/outside of upwelling filaments. The study area was dominated by a southward flow along 200 m depth; meanwhile, the Ekman layer did not exceed 20 m depth. The greatest accumulation of larvae was found in the middle layer (20-80 m), where the current velocity was low and did not interact with the circulation associated with upwelling the filament formation. Most fish larvae were found in non-upwelling waters in the middle stratum. Independent of the origin of water (upwelling/non-upwelling), larvae of Dioge-nichthys laternatus (Myctophidae), Engraulis ringens (Engraulidae) and Bathylagus nigrigenys (Bathylagidae) showed a deeper vertical distribution during the day, suggesting a daily vertical migration. This behavior can potentially increase retention of larvae near the coast in productive areas through vertical evasion of the Ekman layer during upwelling events.

Diel-depth distributions of fish larvae off the Balearic Islands (western Mediterranean) under two environmental scenarios

The diel vertical distribution of fish larvae off the Balearic Islands during late autumn and summer was analysed in relation to the environmental conditions. Four fixed sampling stations, located in the outer shelf and slope zones, were sampled during both the day and night by means of oblique hauls at different water depths. In autumn the first 60m were characterised by vertical mixing and relatively higher fluorescence values, while summer was characterised by strong near-surface stratification and the presence of a Deep Fluorescence Maximum (DFM). The fish larval community was dominated by mesopelagic species, myctophiforms and stomiiforms, with some differences in species composition and their relative contribution between periods. A higher number of species was observed to reproduce in summer. The diel vertical distribution patterns differed among species and, within species, some differences were detected between the day and night. Although their relative depth preferences were similar between surveys, seasonal comparisons for the most abundant species showed that in autumn larvae presented both a shallower distribution during the day and a deeper distribution during the night than in the summer period. The larvae of all species, except for Argyropelecus hemigymnus, were absent from layers below 200m. In these deeper layers, only A. hemigymnus larvae and juvenile stages of myctophiforms and stomiiforms were found. Another group of species, including Hygophum benoiti, Ceratoscopelus maderensis, Cyclothone braueri and Lampanyctus crocodilus, characterised the surface assemblage, mainly appearing in the first 50m during the day, while at night their distribution was wider, extending to deeper layers. Benthosema glaciale, Symbolophorus veranyi and Myctophum punctatum were located at intermediate levels (mostly 50–100m). Larval size stratification was evident for the most abundant species, with younger stages being found at shallower depths in the water column, while postflexion stages presented a wide distribution at night, undergoing vertical displacement to the near-surface layers during the day. The roles of the position of the thermocline, the availability of food and light intensity as factors modulating these differences are discussed.

Vertical distribution and gas bladder inflation/deflation in postlarval anchoveta Engraulis ringens during upwelling events

Vertical distribution of fish larvae can be modified by a series of physical processes occurring in the water column at different time and spatial scales and also by biological processes occurring during larval development. To assess the factors affecting the vertical distribution of larval anchoveta Engraulis ringens during austral spring, meteorological and oceanographic features were measured and stratified ichthyoplankton sampling was carried out in central Chile during active upwelling events. In November 2001, during the upwelling season, southerly winds dominate, and intrusion of low dissolved oxygen occurred in nearshore waters; preflexion larvae of E. ringens were collected in the mixed layer of the water column (the Ekman layer) irrespective of day and night hours. Larvae larger than 10 mm showed an inflated gas bladder during night collections, and non-inflated gas bladder during day hours. Larvae with inflated gas bladders were located significantly at shallower depths during night than at day hours, indicating a direct relationship between gas bladder inflation, diel vertical migration of larval E. ringens and decrease of wind-induced turbulence at night. We discuss the potential implications of larval E. ringens vertical distribution and its variability on the horizontal transport off coastal waters during the upwelling season off central Chile as a biophysical coupling to enhance coastal retention.

Composition and daytime vertical distribution of the ichthyoplankton assemblage in the Central Cantabrian Sea shelf, during summer: An Eulerian study

During summer, wind driven coastal upwelling dominates in the Central Cantabrian Sea (southern Bay of Biscay). Nevertheless, atmospheric forcing is highly variable and wind pulses may cause noticeable and fast hydrographic responses in the shelf region. In this paper, the composition and vertical distribution of the summer ichthyoplankton assemblage during the daytime at a fixed station, located on the Central Cantabrian Sea shelf, are documented. Also, the impact of a short-time scale hydrographic event on the abundance and structure of the larval fish assemblage is examined. Significant small-scale temporal hydrographic variability was observed. Currents showed changes in speed and direction and significant changes in thermocline depth were also observed. A total of 34 taxa of fish larvae were identified. Engraulis encrasicolus eggs and larvae of the shelf-dwelling species Trachurus trachurus, Capros aper and E. encrasicolus dominated the ichthyoplankton assemblage. The distribution of E. encrasicolus eggs and fish larvae was vertically structured. E. encrasicolus egg concentration increased exponentially towards the surface. Fish larvae showed a subsurface peak of concentration and their vertical distribution was not conditioned by thermocline depths. The short term hydrographic event did not affect the vertical distribution of fish larvae but it accounted for significant temporal changes in larval fish assemblage structure and abundance. Results suggest that temperature and light intensity are important factors in the vertical distribution of fish larvae. They also indicate that the temporal monitoring of the larval fish assemblage in this region requires multiple sampling sites.

Distribution and abundance of fish larvae in the northern Ionian Sea (Eastern Mediterranean)

The purpose of this paper was to study the spatial distribution, abundance and composition of fish larvae in the northern Ionian Sea. Samples were collected to the 600 m depth with an electronic multinet BIONESS during the “INTERREG Italia-Grecia” oceanographic cruise carried out in March 2000 off the Apulian Italian coast. A total of 46 species of teleost early stages were collected, belonging to 38 genera and 22 families. Over 52% of the larvae identified were mesopelagic species, almost 27% were demersal and about 21% pelagic. A total of 307 myctophids, 69 clupeids and 61 gadid post-larvae dominated the community. Benthosema glaciale (mean 6.1 mm SL) was the most abundant species (21.6%), the most frequent in the samples (28.8%), and dominant in the whole study area (mean 1.4 ind/100 m3). Particular attention was given to the horizontal and vertical distribution and abundance of the three dominant post-larval species: Benthosema glaciale, Sprattus sprattus sprattus and Notoscopelus elongatus. The Pearson coefficient (R = 0.734) showed a high correlation between total zooplankton and fish larval assemblages in terms of spatial distribution abundance values. Regarding the vertical distribution of fish larvae, Sorensen’s index (S = 0.69) showed that fish larvae and total zooplankton abundance peaks co-occurred along the water column.

The role of oceanographic conditions and plankton availability in larval fish assemblages off the Catalan coast (NW Mediterranean)

AbstractIn the northwestern Mediterranean, most fish species reproduce in early summer and fewer in the autumn mixing period. This study analyses and compares larval fish assemblages (LFA) in both seasons, and is the first attempt to characterize LFA structure for the autumn period. We analyze horizontal and vertical distribution of fish larvae and the micro‐ and mesozooplankton biomass and abundance of the main zooplankton groups. The oceanographic situation was analyzed through the study of data from CTD, Nν‐Shuttle and ADCP surveys. LFA were determined by ordination analyses based on larval abundance, and the relationships between larval assemblages and environmental variables were investigated through canonical correspondence analysis. The importance of some hydrographic variables (temperature, salinity and stability of the water column), current fields (along‐shelf and across‐shelf transport) and the abundance of zooplankton are discussed as important factors shaping the structure of larval assemblages. In early summer, LFA were mainly structured by a combination of bathymetry and trophic components, although sea surface temperature also played a role in shaping the horizontal larval distributions. In autumn, trophic variables were the main factors influencing the shelf‐dwelling species assemblage. Larvae of oceanic species, on the other hand, were not related to trophic variables but were more affected by current fields.

Vertical Distribution of Fish Larvae and Its Relation to Water Column Structure in the Southwestern Gulf of California1

ABSTRACT The seasonal evolution of vertical distribution of fish larvae and its relationship with seasonal stratification, as measured by a quantitative stability parameter, were analyzed for a region off Bahia de La Paz in the southwestern Gulf of California. Samples were obtained with an opening-closing net (505 μm) in 50-m depth strata from surface to 200-m depth in May, July, and October 2001 and February 2002. Significant differences in total larval abundance and in dominant species (mesopelagic and epipelagic) were found among strata from May to October. More larvae were found in maximum-stability strata (from 16 ±5 to 48 ±17 m depth) than below the pycnocline (from 100- to 150-m depth). In February, the 100-m-deep surface mixed layer had a weak pycnocline at its base, and no significant difference was found. Mesoscale high-frequency variability in the Alboran Sea and its influence on fish larvae distributions

This work analyses a multidisciplinary data set including hydrological and meteorological data, satellite images, and fish larvae abundance from a high-frequency experiment conducted along a north–south transect across the Western Alboran Sea anticyclonic gyre. Four consecutive occupations of the transect, crossing the frontal area, evidenced the high-frequency variability of hydrological structures and its influence on the latitudinal and vertical distribution of fish larvae in a period of a few days. The influence of dynamical processes on fish larvae depends on the location of the spawning as well as on the larval fish position in the water column. Wind induced upwelling and/or the southward drift of the Atlantic current transport larvae of neritic species, such as Sardina pilchardus and Engraulis encrasicolus to open sea areas. At the same time, these events bring about alterations in the latitudinal and vertical distributions of mesopelagic fish larvae. The species with a relatively surface distribution, as Ceratoscopelus maderensis, were transported and accumulated to the south of the Atlantic Jet (AJ), while those with a deeper distribution in the water column, as Maurolicus muelleri or Benthosema glaciale, would be upwelled and concentrated to the north. This study shows that it is difficult to extract conclusions about the mean or preferential distributions of fish larvae when one single/synoptic survey is considered and that time evolution of hydrological structures has to be considered in order to conclude.

Vertical distribution of fish larvae in the Canaries-African coastal transition zone in summer

This study reports the vertical distribution of fish larvae during the 1999 summer upwelling season in the Canaries-African Coastal Transition Zone (the Canaries-ACTZ). The transition between the African coastal upwelling and the typical subtropical offshore conditions is a region of intense mesoscale activity that supports a larval fish population dominated by African neritic species. During the study, the thermal stratification extended almost to the surface everywhere, and the surface mixed layer was typically shallow or non-existent. Upwelling occurred on the African shelf in a limited coastal sub-area of our sampling. The vertical distributions of the entire larval fish population, as well as of individual species, were independent of the seasonal thermocline. Fish larvae and mesozooplankton were concentrated at intermediate depths regardless of the thermocline position, probably because of its weak signature and spatial and temporal variability. Day/night vertical distributions suggest that some species did not perform diel vertical migration (DVM), whereas others showed either type I DVM or type II DVM. The opposing DVM patterns of different species compensate for each other resulting in no net DVM for the larval fish population as a whole.

Diel vertical distribution of fish larvae during the winter-mixing period in the Northwestern Mediterranean

Abstract The vertical distributions of the larvae of shelf and oceanic fish species that spawn during the winter-mixing period in the Mediterranean are described from 22 vertically stratified plankton tows. Diel differences in the vertical distribution patterns in relation to physical data and potential prey abundance throughout the water column were examined. Even in absence of stratification, the larvae of the various fish species showed different patterns of vertical distribution and diel changes. The larvae of shelf-dwelling species were found in the surface layers, mainly above 50-m depth, and with some exceptions, with very little diel variation in depth distribution. Therefore, the vertical distribution of the larvae of these species coincided with the maximum concentrations of their potential food, nauplii and copepodite stages of copepods. The larvae of mesopelagic fishes showed deeper distributions in the water column and most of these species were located closer to the surface during the day than at night. Given the homogeneity of the physical characteristics throughout the water column, except for light, this behaviour may be determined not only by the higher concentration of prey in the surface layers but also by adequate light levels for feeding.

Vertical distribution of fish larvae in the north-west Mediterranean Sea in spring

The vertical distribution of the larvae of shelf-dwelling fish species that spawn in the NW Mediterranean Sea in spring was studied in relation to environmental data. Two sampling cycles were carried out at fixed stations on the continental shelf in May and June 1992. Three patterns of larval vertical distribution for the various taxa represented in the samples were observed. The larvae of most species (e.g. Boops boops, Diplodus sargus) were mainly located in the surface layer (10 m), others (e.g. Arnoglossus sp.) had broader distributions in the upper 40 m of the water column, and but a few (e.g. Gobiidae) were present in large concentrations at greater depths. The vertical distribution patterns of the various species showed no variations, despite high hydrographic variability during the study. The vertical distribution of only a few species (e.g. Arnoglossus sp., Crystallogobius linearis and Engraulis encrasicolus) varied over the diel cycle. The possible influence of the vertical distribution of fish larvae on their horizontal distribution patterns is discussed.

A comparative study on the influence of the pycnocline on the vertical distribution of fish larvae and cephalopod paralarvae in three ecoligically different areas of the Arabian Sea

Zooplankton sampling took place during cruise 5 Leg 3 of the R.V. Meteor (March–June 1987) in three hydrographically and ecologically different areas of the Arabian Sea (Indian Ocean): an upwelling area at the coast of Oman; an oligotroph area in the central Arabian Sea; and a shelf area off the coast of Pakistan. All three areas were expected to hace similar ichthyoplankton and cephalopod components and similar light conditions. These are important prerequisites for the present comparative study, which is concerned with the importance of the structure of the water column (physical stability and prey availability), compared with the influence of the light intensity (day/night) on the vertical distribution of species and size classes of fish larvae and cephalopod paralarvae in the subtropical pelagial. First results show that the vertical structure of the water column, especially the occurrence of a pynocline and the varying mixed-layer width, either directly or indirectly had important impact on the vertical distribution patterns of both fish larvae and cephalopod paralarvae. In addition, cephalopods were influenced more consistently by the diurnal change of light intensity than fish larvae. Both taxa occurred mainly below the mixed surface layer. However, cephalopod paralarvae preferred shallower depths than fish larvae in all three areas and were closer related to the pycnocline than fish larvae in most cases. In the absence of a significant pycnocline, larvae appeared close to the surface.

Abundance and diurnal vertical distribution of fish larvae in early spring and summer in a fjord at South Georgia

The diurnal vertical distribution and abundance of fish larvae was studied by net samples in the 265 m deep fjord of Cumberland East Bay, South Georgia. In early spring the six most abundant species of fish larvae in the upper 200 m of the water column were Champsocephalus gunnari, Lepidonotothen nudifrons, Pseudochaenichthys georgianus, Chaenocephalus aceratus, Parachaenichthys' georgianus and Electrona antarctica. In summer, the larvae of C. gunnari, Gobionotothen gibberifrons, Lepidonotothen larseni and Trematomus hansoni were most abundant, and the majority were found in the upper 140 m of the water column, with greatest densities in the top 2m. During both seasons most species showed some evidence of diurnal vertical migration. A distinct pattern was found for C. gunnari in summer; they were at 0–20 m during the day and 60–100 m at midnight. Net avoidance by the larvae of most species was greater before sunset in early spring, and during all periods of daylight in summer, than at other times of day.

Vertical distribution of fish larvae in the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon, Australia

The vertical distribution of shorefish — primarily reef fish — larvae in the upper 20 m in relatively shallow (<30 m) waters of the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon near Lizard Island was investigated from 27 February to 7 March 1983 during both day and night. Four strata were sampled by neuston net and opening/closing bongo net: neuston (0 to 0.1 m), upper (0 to 6 m), middle (6 to 13 m), and deep (13 to 20 m). Taxon-specific patterns of vertical distribution which changed little ontogenetically, were found for the 50 taxa (in 24 families) analysed. Vertical distribution was highly structured during the day, and with few exceptions was nearly unstructured at night. Most taxa had highest concentrations deep in the water column during the day, but in any given stratum some taxa had highest concentrations. Day/night changes in pattern apparently were due to randomization or spread, rather than active migration. Related taxa had similar patterns. Similarity analysis including 211 taxa produced three groupings of samples: day neuston; day upper/middle; and day deep plus all night samples. The sampling strategy of using drogues to tag water parcels for subsequent resampling was compared with one of sampling at a fixed point. The drogue strategy was not superior to the fixed-point strategy as measured by dissimilarity indices, but this may differ among strata.

A Large-Volume Pump System for Studies of the Vertical Distribution of Fish Larvae Under Open Sea Conditions

A large-volume pump system (2.8 m3 min-1) for sampling fish larvae under open-sea conditions is described. Comparative efficiency trials by day and night showed that the pump was generally as efficient, or in some cases more efficient, in capturing larvae than vertically hauled 200 μm WP2 nets, though there was some evidence of visual avoidance by particular larval size classes during daylight. The pump system is particularly appropriate for investigating fine-scale vertical aggregations (1–10 m3) of larval fish in relation to the distribution of their food organisms.INTRODUCTIONStudies of the distribution of larval fish and their food organisms in relation to physical structure in the water column require sampling techniques capable of resolving fine-scale temporal and spatial distributions. As an alternative to conventional nets, large-volume pumps, sampling at rates in excess of 1 m3 min-1; provide such a capability. Major benefits of using large pumps in addition to temporal and spatial resolution are that a wide range of sizes of plankton including larval fish can be sampled simultaneously in relation to physical and chemical properties of the water column; there is reliable control of the volume of sample filtered and problems of clogging of towed nets are avoided; long series of sequential samples can be taken in studies of small-scale distribution; and instrumentation with in situ CTD and fluorometers at the intake enables real-time control of sampling in relation to physical structure.General engineering considerations for using such pumps have been reviewed in detail by Miller &amp; Judkins (1981), and a particular area of application has been in power-plant entrainment studies in shallow fresh water (Portner &amp; Rhode, 1977; Bowles &amp; Merriner, 1978; Gale &amp; Mohr, 1978; Ney &amp; Schumacher, 1978; Elder et al. 1979; Leithiser, Ehrlich &amp; Thum, 1979; Cada &amp; Loar, 1982).

Diel vertical distribution of fish larvae their prey in nearshore waters of southern California

Ichthyoplankton was sampled with bongos and microplankton was sampled with a pump at 3 to 5 discrete depths over isobaths of 8, 22 and 30 m, during a winter cruise in Santa Monica Bay, California. Although no thermocline was present, fish larvae were significantly stratified (p 6 mm in length) did not. Only 9% of northern anchovy larvae contained at least 1 food particle (i.e. 9 % feeding incidence), compared to 76 % for white croaker larvae. Early life stages of copepods were important foods for both fish species. Bivalve veligers and tintinids occurred relatively frequently in the guts of white croaker but not northern anchovy. There was little relation between daytime feeding distribution of fish larvae and esculent microzooplankton, except that distributions of white croaker and bivalve veligers were significantly correlated (p < 0.05). The low densities of bivalve veligers in samples (2 = 3 I ' ) , and paradoxically, their frequent occurrence in the guts of white croaker, are discussed in relation to their availability as food for fish larvae. The die1 vertical positions of neritic fish larvae may, in part, be an expedient strategy for their retention in shallow waters.
