Academy NExT: New and Exciting Transitions—A Residential Summer Program for Individuals With Disabilities

Academy New and Exciting Transitions (NExT) was developed to serve participants who have an Individualized Education Program or 504 ages 15–21 in a residential program grounded in high-interest activities that include vocational and technical programs. The focus of the summer program was to develop communication, interview skills, and career exploration across a wide variety of vocational and technical careers that required minimal to substantial postsecondary training. Academy NExT is part of preemployment transition activities funded through a collaborative effort with Vocational Rehabilitation Services and the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act. The article presents an overview of the program and outcomes based on qualitative findings.

Impacting elementary STEM teacher leadership identities

AbstractLearning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects starting at a young age helps prepare students for a variety of careers both inside and outside of the sciences. Yet, addressing integrated STEM in an elementary school setting can be challenging. Teacher leadership is one way to address this challenge. The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive case study is to understand how participation in the NebraskaSTEM Noyce Master Teaching Fellowship project impacted elementary STEM teacher leadership identities. Our findings suggest participation in the project contributed to different layers of teacher leadership identity (as a STEM learner, as a STEM teacher, and as a STEM teacher leader). These findings suggest professional development should be tailored to address empowering specific layers of STEM teacher leaders' professional identity. Other teacher leadership development projects may want to consider how to structure their projects to empower teachers based on the identities and experiences of those teachers.

Career variety and turnover intention: mediating role of job crafting and moderating role of HR innovators and integrators

Purpose Previous studies have indicated that career variety offers numerous benefits in the work environment; however, knowledge regarding the mechanisms that retain employees with diverse career experiences is scant. Drawing on person–environment (P–E) fit theory and the job crafting perspective, this study aims to explore the relationship between career variety and turnover intention, and the roles of job crafting and HR innovators and integrators in this relationship. Design/methodology/approach This study examines the nonlinear effect of career variety on turnover intention using survey data collected from 509 employees (Study 1) and 346 employees and their supervisors (Study 2) in China. Findings Career variety and turnover intention exhibited an inverted U-shaped relationship – mediated by job crafting. Additionally, the HR innovator and integrator moderated the relationship between career variety and job crafting. When the HR innovator and integrator were strong, employees engaged in more job crafting at intermediate levels of career variety. Originality/value The findings not only deepen our understanding of the inherent capabilities and preference traits of employees with diverse career backgrounds but also enrich the body of research on career variety, reconcile inconsistencies across previous studies and offer new insights into strategic organisational interventions for retaining a workforce with varied career experiences.

(Life) Lessons beyond the Lecture Hall: Alumni Reflections on Their Work-Readiness after Completing a South African Postgraduate Journalism Degree

ABSTRACT Higher education institutions are increasingly faced with the challenge of producing graduates ready to enter the world of work—a continuously evolving world that can be unceremoniously upended by global events such as Covid-19. Journalism educators share in this dilemma—especially given the upheaval faced by the media industry. Through an exploratory pilot study, this paper aims to provide insight into what knowledge and skills graduates themselves value once they have entered the world of work. Focus groups were conducted with 38 alumni from a South African postgraduate journalism programme to explore their understanding of the ways in which their studies prepared them to adapt to the workplace. The findings indicate alumni are grateful to have been exposed to a variety of practice-orientated applications in which they could later choose to specialise. More importantly, however, alumni were vocal about the fact that they were taught—sometimes implicitly—skills that transcend disciplinary boundaries and that have stood them in good stead in a variety of careers. These skills include being comfortable networking with peers and colleagues; the ability to meet deadlines; knowledge about how to build contacts; an understanding of the need for lifelong learning; the ability to tell a story with any information at hand; time management skills; and related generic life skills such as resilience. The findings of this pilot study seem to suggest journalism educators should be cognisant that they are training students for the workplace, not just for newswork or mediawork, and that soft skills should be prioritised.

Shaping innovation outcomes: The role of CIOs for firms’ digital exploration

Digital technologies have rapidly pervaded firms, industries, and economic networks. This development has raised expectations that a firm’s chief information officer (CIO) will take a more strategic role, including innovation leadership and digital exploration. In this study, we argue from an upper echelons perspective that CIOs’ career variety and role tenure are critical in shaping the extent to which firms explore digital technologies in their patent portfolio, that is, digital exploration. We expect a U-shaped relationship between CIO career variety and digital exploration, and an inverted U-shaped relationship between CIO role tenure and digital exploration. We test our conceptual model using a cross-industry panel of U.S. firms. As predicted, the results show high digital exploration for low and high career variety, and low digital exploration for moderate career variety, that is, a U-shape. Conversely, they show low digital exploration for low and high role tenure, and high digital exploration for moderate role tenure, that is, an inverted U-shape. These insights indicate that CIOs do become strategic leaders in exploring and shaping digital innovation.

Past, Present, and Future of Learning Agility: A Bibliometric and Content Analysis

Given the unpredictability and complexity of the business environment -due to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and augmented by the COVID-19 pandemic-, employees are required to continually learn new skills and ways of working. Even though 20 years have passed since the coining of the learning agility (LA) construct, only one literature review has explored it qualitatively. Through a co-word bibliometric analysis, complemented by a content analysis, this paper aims to identify the intellectual structure of the LA. Results show that the scientific production by research areas, journals, and studies that have contributed most to the field. Career variety was found as a central and underdeveloped theme while Talent Management was identified as potential emergent one. The important themes for structuring the field on LA were mostly examined from an individual level, as a process or as an outcome. Future research within the Human Resource Development field is suggested.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze the trends in career-related research on the theme of regulatory focus by examining the studies conducted both domestically and internationally, and to present the correlation analysis results between regulatory focus and its associated career variables based on these findings. Methods For this aim, the trends in studies on career-related variables based on Higgins' regulatory focus theory from 2000 to 2023 investigated. It also conducted a meta-analysis based on the quantitative research results of individual career studies, focusing on the regulatory focus. Results The career variables related to the regulatory focus are frequently utilized in the order of behavior, out-come, context, cognition, emotion, motivation, and personality. The correlation between the promotion focus and career variables was found to be stronger than that between the prevention focus and career variables. Moreover, the promotion focus was found to have a stronger correlation with positive career variables than the prevention focus. Conclusions We offered implications that to lead the regulatory fit in career education and counseling. It is effec-tive to encourage individuals with an promotion focus to first enhance their understanding of their personal char-acteristics and utilize their strengths related to their goals. Additionally, for individuals with a prevention focus, it is beneficial to initially gain an understanding of the environmental possibilities that may result in losses, and then to establish concrete strategies to minimize these losses while enhancing their understanding of their personal characteristics.

Will human capital humble CEOs? Effects of career variety and education

ABSTRACT Integrating human capital theory, social information processing theory, and literature on humble leadership behaviours, this study takes an initial step to investigate the effects of CEO human capital on CEO humble leadership behaviours. We developed a model that explains how experience human capital (career variety) and education human capital (education level and elite education) independently and jointly influence CEO humble leadership behaviours. We examined the proposed model using multi-source data. The data of the independent variables were hand-collected from multiple sources, including the CSMAR database, corporate websites, and press releases. The data of the dependent variable were collected with an online survey from 175 listed companies. We found that career variety positively influenced CEO humble leadership behaviours, while elite education was negatively associated with CEO humble leadership behaviours. Moreover, career variety and education level had a positive interaction effect on CEO humble leadership behaviours, while career variety and elite education had a negative interaction effect on CEO humble leadership behaviours. Our findings highlight that different types of human capital may exert different impacts. Moreover, apart from the direct impact of one specific type of human capital, various types of human capital can interact to influence CEO humble leadership behaviours.

Cross-curriculum Teaching and Learning in the Secondary School: Geography, History, Religious Education and Mathematics in Kenya’s Competency Based Curriculum

Inadequate learners’ engagement in Geography, History, Religious Education, and Mathematics (GHREM) can lead to a lack of knowledge and appreciation for the importance of these learning areas in various careers. This has the potential to have far-reaching implications for a country’s need for well-educated graduates in Geography, History, Religious Education, and Mathematics to ensure socioeconomic, cultural, and political development. The implication is that there will be a lack of personnel to take up a career in these learning areas in the future. This study looked into the importance of GHREM in the National Curriculum as well as their relationship. The study relied on library research and a qualitative research design to examine published articles related to the research objectives from 1945 to 2023. From the over 100 articles accessed, this investigation purposefully sampled 25 published articles. Content analysis was used to validate the articles. Data was collected through documentation and analyzed through content analysis. The analysis of 25 related articles revealed that the GHREM learning areas are interconnected and interdependent. Geography teaches learners about their surroundings and helps them understand them. History helps learners understand the evolution of various human endeavors. Religious education helps learners understand various religions and their practices while also promoting tolerance and respect for diversity, as well as ethical and moral behavior. Mathematics introduces learners to concepts such as numbers, algebra, geometry, and statistics, while also encouraging abstract thinking and problem-solving abilities. These learning areas are related because they are all required for learners to understand and interpret their surroundings, as well as to succeed in a variety of careers. Overall, each learning area helps to develop a well-rounded education that prepares learners for careers and beyond. According to the study’s findings, these learning areas should be integrated across the curriculum.

Research on the relationship between CEO career variety, digital knowledge base extension, and digital transformation in the context of digital merger and acquisition: The case of China's new generation of information technology firms.

This study examines the relationship between CEO career variety, digital knowledge base extension, and digital transformation in a digital M&A context. An empirical test was conducted using regression analysis with the digital M&A events of the new generation of information technology firms in China as the research sample. The results reveal that CEO career variety has a positive effect on digital transformation in the digital M&A context and that digital knowledge-base extension plays a mediating role. Moreover, the heterogeneity impact analysis indicated that the moderating effects of geographical distance, knowledge disparity, and cultural difference between target and acquirer firms on the above relationships vary greatly: geographical distance has a negative moderating effect, cultural difference has a positive moderating effect, and the moderating effects of both geographical distance and cultural difference are realized through mediating effects, but none of the moderating effects of knowledge disparity are significant.

Determinants of Intra-major Specialization and Career Decisions Among Undergraduate Biomedical Engineering Students

Biomedical engineering is a broad and interdisciplinary field that prepares graduates for a variety of careers across multiple career sectors. Given this breadth, undergraduate degree programs often have formal or informal opportunities for students to further specialize within the biomedical engineering major to develop skills in subdisciplines of biomedical engineering. While previous work has explored factors that influence student decision-making of engineering major choice, including the role of gender, limited work has explored factors that influence intra-major specialization in biomedical engineering. The present study sought to expand on existing research to understand factors that influence biomedical engineering students’ choice of intra-major specializations and how, if at all, these factors are related to gender. Grounded in social cognitive career theory, the present study leveraged quantitative surveys from undergraduate biomedical engineering students to understand factors influencing intra-major specialization choice, including the impact that students viewed on their career plans. Participants rated multiple factors as important in their intra-major specialization decisions, with professors/classes rated as the most important influence and alumni as the lowest. Similarly, participants rated multiple outcome expectations of their specialization, although income was rated lower than other factors. Participants most commonly indicated interest in pursuing careers in industry and medicine. We found some differences in intra-major specialization, outcome expectations, and career interests by gender, with women students indicating a higher influence of professors/classes and higher expectations for their track decision to provide a career with a good income. Further understanding of how undergraduate students select specializations in engineering coursework will inform curriculum design and student advising.

The fast-track ascent to the top: The role of human capital in European listed firms

Drawing on human capital theory, this study examines the role of different components of human capital—education (level and type), tenure, and career variety (functional, industry, firm, and country variety)—in the rapid or “fast-track” career ascent of individuals to their first top management position (highest level of organisational hierarchy) as chief executive officer (CEO) or non-CEO Senior Manager (SM). Using a retrospective approach to the career trajectories of over 7500 CEOs and non-CEO SMs s in European listed firms, we show the commonalities and differences in the composition of human capital in the career progressions of both groups. The results reveal that the human capital that accelerates CEOs’ careers include an MBA degree and long tenure, especially when combined with firm variety. In contrast, for non-CEO SMs, a high level of education and low functional variety accelerated their career ascent. For non-CEO SMs, tenure has a negative effect that is alleviated by career variety. By explicating the components of human capital, we suggest that many forms of career variety, such as experience acquired across countries, industries, or firms, are not valued in a fast-track career, and hardly create valuable human capital for top positions. Our study paves the way for exploring the composition of human capital not only for different organisational roles, but also for different hierarchical levels.

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to develop a model of employee performance involving career, organizational spirituality, and discipline.
 Method: The research method is a survey method by distributing questionnaires to 150 employees and using the SEM (structural equation modeling) analysis tool. researchers distributed questionnaires via gGoogleform, and classify, and analyze the model.
 Result: The findings of the outer model research show that all indicators are valid, and the hypothesis test is accepted as significant. Career variables and organizational spirituality have a direct effect on discipline, namely 0.260 and 0.689. While career and organizational spiritual variables have a direct effect on employee performance of 0.233 and 0.435. Career and spiritual mediation and employee discipline have a direct effect of 0.187, 0.230 ,and 0.334.
 Limitation: Research limitations. Researchers limit the survey area to only the city of Cilegon, so it is necessary to invade the research object in order to produce a more established model.
 Novelty: The novelty of the research is involving organizational spirituality as another perception to increase sales.

From Policies to Practices: Factors Related to the Use of Inclusive Practices in Portugal.

Inclusion is considered a foundation for quality education, and teachers' inclusive practices are essential for success in mainstream classrooms. Portugal has been making progressive improvements in its policies for inclusive education, although there is little consistency in school practices within or between schools. Moreover, data identifying the personal and career variables relevant to teachers' inclusive practices in Portugal are scarce. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between teachers' inclusive practices and personal and career-based characteristics, including gender, level of teaching, years of experience, roles performed at school, and perception of inclusive resources. The participants were 924 teachers who worked in private and public schools in Portugal. Regression analysis showed that perceived inclusive resources, level of teaching, and gender predicted variance in inclusive practices. Mean difference analyses revealed that teachers at the lower levels of teaching, females, and teachers reporting more inclusive resources had the highest scores for inclusive practices. These findings are discussed in terms of their practical relevance for inclusive school systems.

Global vs local careers taxonomy for graduate employability: Through the lens of students’ typology and destination

Career studies literature suggests that careers become more boundaryless and more global. Students, the agents of the choice of career, are not a homogeneous cohort anymore. We add to the discussion the students’ typology proposition for the career choice to further develop the graduate employability discourse. We make the first attempt to develop a student global vs local career taxonomy to contribute into understanding of graduate employability and career decision making. Our contribution offers a two-dimensional taxonomy, with one dimension being a type of student and another dimension being a career destination. The conceptual taxonomy is empirically tested with data from more than 400 business and economics students. We show that a global career choice would prevail above a local career choice for each of the student types. Our findings contribute into deeper understanding of career decision making and broadens our comprehension of the variety of global vs local careers for graduate employability. The study develops the future research agenda for career development researchers and multinational corporations’ (MNC) practitioners and practical agenda for teaching and learning in universities.

CAREER EXPLORATORY INTENTIONS AND DECIDEDNESS AMONG STUDENTS: A CAREER SELF-MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE

The present study aimed to expand the knowledge on the career exploratory intentions and decidedness in the career self-management model of Social Cognitive Career Theory (Lent & Brown, 2013). To predict these career behaviours, we used hierarchical regression and analysed the predictors role of socioeconomic status, social support, career exploration, and decision-making learning experiences, self-efficacy, and outcome expectations. In addition to the career variables included in the Career Self-Management Model, this study also explored the role of work volition, a central variable from the Psychology of Working Theory. Data were collected using an online survey filled in by 235 college students. The results showed that positive emotions and outcome expectations were significant predictors of exploratory intentions, while self-efficacy was a constant significant predictor of career decidedness. Socioeconomic status and work volition were not significant predictors in any of the models.

FACTORS RELATED TO LEARNING AGILITY: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

The current situation in the world is experiencing VUCA, where there are rapid and drastic changes in technology, economics, the environment, and other aspects. Every adult, especially employees and job seekers, needs to develop learning agility so that they can adapt and compete in today's era. This systematic literature review aims to identify the factors related to learning agility. Article searches were conducted from March to June 2022 using six databases, namely SpringerLink, Emerald Insight, ScienceDirect, SAGE, Scopus, and ProQuest, with keywords "Learning Agility" AND "Employee*" OR "Jobseeker*" OR "Student*". After the article screening process, a total of 10 studies were obtained and analyzed in this literature review. The results show that there are 11 factors related to learning agility, namely compensation, salary, internal marketability, digital competence, digital technologies, e-learning, career variety, work experience, outcome, learning engagement, dan turnover intention. The results of this study can be useful as a reference for future research to further examine the relationship of the above factors. The results of the study can also be practically useful for developing individual learning agility so that they have optimal potential to adapt agilely in the VUCA era.

Teaching Artificial Intelligence (AI) with AI for AI applications

The emergence of widely-used artificial intelligence (AI) has created a critical need for AI expertise, not just as a research area but for workers in the wide variety of careers and roles that AI disrupts. While AI is still an area of research for new processing, application, and development – it continues to partially automate, augment, or replace many of the tasks which are performed through active use of human hands. While recently publicized items such as ChatGPT and MidJourney have made press in their adjustment to writing and image generation technology, the basic workflow of copyeditors and digital artists was completely transformed, inside of the year, to a combination of partially automated or fully automated AI tasks. While some blame AI as part of the “problem”, it is naturally part of the “solution” – AI tools to help workers develop AI competencies. The paper describes an array of strategies which the DoD and its ICT UARC are using to address the fundamental problem of quickly upskilling the DoD workforce of over 2 million adult learners.
