Conversion to Greenhouse Cultivation from Continuous Corn Production Decreases Soil Bacterial Diversity and Alters Community Structure

Changes in crop types and long-term monoculture substantially impact soil microbial communities. Exploring these changes and their influencing factors is of great significance for addressing the challenges posed by continuous cropping. Soil surface layer samples from greenhouse tomatoes fields cultivated for 5 (Y5), 9 (Y9), 13 years (Y13), and a surrounding corn field (CK) as a control were analyzed. The Y13 sample showed a significant increase in the relative abundance of Pseudomonadota (43.1%) and a decrease in Actinobacteria (50.3%) compared to the CK sample. Soil bacterial alpha diversity generally declined from the CK to Y13 (0.1–22.2%) sample, with a small peak in Y9 for Chao1 and Observed_species. Significant differences in Chao1 and Observed_ species were observed between the CK and Y13 samples. Beta diversity analysis revealed a pronounced variation in soil bacterial community structure across planting years, with the divergence from the CK sample intensifying over time. In comparison to the Y5 vs. CK samples, Y9 and Y13 exhibited marked differences from the CK across the same and broader metabolic pathways, suggesting a potential convergence of microbial activities over time. The Y9 and Y13 samples showed significantly higher biosynthesis abundance (7.50% and 6.36%, respectively) than the CK. In terms of soil physicochemical indices, the carbon–nitrogen ratio was the primary factor influencing soil bacterial composition. In conclusion, we found that crop alteration and continued planting changed the soil’s bacterial composition and increasing planting years suppressed the soil’s bacterial diversity, leading to a stable bacterial ecology after nine years. Implementing appropriate measures during this critical period is vital for optimal soil utilization.

The stability of aboveground productivity in a semiarid steppe in China is influenced by the plant community structure

The temporal stability of aboveground net primary productivity is generally regulated by plant community structure and species diversity. There are recurring debates on the mechanisms by which environmental changes impact productivity stability in semiarid steppes. Here we revealed that plant community structure, rather than species diversity, regulates productivity stability in a semiarid Steppe. We conducted a decade-long in situ warming and precipitation addition experiment in a semiarid steppe in Inner Mongolia, China, to monitor plant productivity, species asynchrony, species diversity, and stability. We found that Leymus chinensis productivity increased and the Shannon–Wiener decreased under warming conditions, while Stipa krylovii productivity decreased under precipitation addition. Warming reduced the stability of Stipa krylovii and the plant community stability, whereas it did not affect the stability of L. chinensis. These results deepen our understanding of the regulatory role played by community structure and species diversity regarding productivity stability in semiarid steppes.

The dual lens of diversity: Seasonal variability of avian community structure in urban hills

Urbanization has significantly increased the environmental intricacy of low mountainous and hilly urban landscapes, exacerbating the need for biodiversity conservation in these ecosystems. This study involved comprehensive bird surveys across four seasons from July 2022 to April 2023 along 64 transects in the low mountainous terrain of Jiangsu Province. Adopting a dual lens of taxonomic and functional dimensions, our research explored seasonal fluctuations and assembly mechanisms governing avian community diversity (both α and β) on these urban hills. The results showed that species richness and functional diversity (FD) were higher in spring and lower in autumn, whereas functional mean pairwise distance (MFD) and mean nearest functional distance (FD.MNTD) were higher in summer and winter. Although the standardized effect sizes for MFD were not significantly different from zero in any of the four periods, those for FD.MNTD were significantly less than zero in summer, autumn, and winter, indicating a propensity for functional trait clustering within avian communities during these seasons. Taxonomic variations were found to be chiefly governed by species turnover, whereas functional dynamics were principally shaped by nestedness. A marked disparity emerged, with functional β-diversity and its turnover components consistently registering lower values than their taxonomic counterparts, accompanied by a higher level of functional nestedness versus taxonomic nestedness. This study underscores the intricate seasonal dynamics of avian communities in urbanized low mountainous regions and provides crucial insights to devise conservation strategies aimed at preserving avian biodiversity within these ecologically complex urban landscapes.

Avian diversity in river levee forest: the effect of microscale heterogeneity

Introduction: Levee forests exhibit a vertical stratification that may contribute to structural complexity allowing a great diversity of birds to thrive on the islands. In deltaic ecosystems there is scarce or no data to prove it. Objectives: To assess variations in the composition of the bird community within levee forests. Methods: Two areas of protected wetlands belonging to the Paraná River Delta in Argentina were sampled for three years. A comparative analysis of richness, abundance, and diversity was performed in different levee forests using the point count method. Results: Three distinct types of levee forests -open, intermediate, and closed- were identified based on the structure of their vegetation, hosting a total of 85 bird species. Variation in avian community structure among forest types revealed greater diversity in open forests during winter (3.26 ± 0.13, P < 0.01) and spring (3.58 ± 0.05, P < 0.01), and greater richness in autumn (35.33 ± 3.01, P < 0.01). The closed forests exhibited increased diversity during autumn (3.16 ± 0.13, P < 0.05) and summer (3.24 ± 0.06, P < 0.05), along with elevated abundance in autumn (114 ± 13.70, P < 0.05) and richness in spring (39.17 ± 4.71, P = 0.01). Due to the evolutionary history between sites, significant variation was observed in the most recently created national park, influencing abundance in winter (141 ± 22.06, P < 0.01) and spring (176 ± 12.83, P < 0.01), as well as diversity in winter (3.25 ± 0.10, P < 0.01) and spring (3.50 ± 0.10, P < 0.01). Conclusions: The microhabitat in the different levee forests allows the birds to organize differently. Focusing on microspatial dynamics is key to a deep understanding of the biological processes within subtropical islands and to plan conservation strategies and demonstrate the transition of a recovering riparian forest towards its natural state, where the pulse of the river and the effect of seasonality do not stop operating.

Intercropping in Coconut Plantations Regulate Soil Characteristics by Microbial Communities

Intercropping is a commonly employed agricultural technique that offers numerous advantages, such as increasing land productivity, enhancing soil health, and controlling soil-borne pathogens. In this study, Artemisia argyi, Dioscorea esculenta, and Arachis pintoi were intercropped with coconuts and compared with naturally growing weeds (Bidens pilosa), respectively. The regulatory mechanism of intercropping was examined by analyzing the variability in soil properties and microbial community structure across different intercropping modes and soil depths (0–20 cm, 20–40 cm, and 40–60 cm). The results indicate that intercropping can increase the diversity of soil bacteria and fungi. Moreover, as soil depth increases, the changes in microbial communities weaken. Intercropping reduced soil SOM and increased pH, which is directly related to the changes in the abundance of Acidobacteria in the soil. In various intercropping systems, the disparities resulting from intercropping with A. pintoi are particularly pronounced. Specifically, intercropping with A. pintoi leads to an increase in soil potassium and phosphorus levels, as well as an enhancement in the abundance of Bacillus sp., which plays a crucial role in the suppression of plant pathogenic fungi within the soil ecosystem. The results of the correlation analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) suggest that the impacts of three intercropping systems on microbial composition and soil indicators exhibit considerable variation. However, a common critical factor influencing these effects is the soil phosphorus content. Furthermore, our findings indicate that intercropping resulted in lower soil nitrogen levels, exacerbating nitrogen deficiency and masking its impact on the microbial community composition.

Local and regional processes drive distance decay in structure in a spatial multilayer plant-pollinator network.

Understanding spatial variation in species distribution and community structure is at the core of community ecology. Nevertheless, the effect of distance on metacommunity structure remains little studied. We examine how plant-pollinator community structure changes across geographical distances at a regional scale and disentangle its underlying local and regional processes. We use a multilayer network to represent linked plant-pollinator communities as a metacommunity in the Canary Islands. We used modularity (i.e. the extent to which the community is partitioned into groups of densely interacting species) to quantify distance decay in structure across space. In multilayer modularity, the same species can belong to different modules in different communities, and modules can span communities. This enabled quantifying how similarity in module composition varied with distance between islands. We developed three null models, each controlling for a separate component of the multilayer network, to disentangle the role of species turnover, interaction rewiring and local factors in driving distance decay in structure. We found a pattern of distance decay in structure, indicating that islands tended to share fewer modules with increasing distance. Species turnover (but not interaction rewiring) was the primary regional process triggering distance decay in structure. Local interaction structure also played an essential role in determining the structure similarity of communities at a regional scale. Therefore, local factors that determine species interactions occurring at a local scale drive distance decay in structure at a regional scale. Our work highlights the interplay between local and regional processes underlying community structure. The methodology, and specifically the null models, we developed provides a general framework for linking communities in space and testing different hypotheses regarding the factors generating spatial structure.

MAP-IO: an atmospheric and marine observatory program on board Marion Dufresne over the Southern Ocean

Abstract. This article is devoted to the presentation of the MAP-IO observation program. This program, launched in early 2021, has enabled the observation of nearly 700 d of measurements over the Indian and Southern Ocean with the equipment of 17 meteorological and oceanographic scientific instruments on board the ship Marion Dufresne. Several observational techniques have been developed to respond to the difficulties of observations on board the ship, in particular for passive remote sensing data, as well as for quasi-autonomous data acquisition and transfer. The first measurements made it possible to draw up unprecedented climatological data of the Southern Ocean regarding the size distribution and optical thickness of aerosols, the concentration of trace gases and greenhouse gases, UV, and integrated water vapor. High-resolution observations of phytoplankton in surface waters have also shown a great variability in latitude in terms of abundance and community structure (diversity). The operational success of this program and these unique scientific results together establish a proof of concept and underline the need to transform this program into a permanent observatory. The multi-year rotations over the Indian Ocean will enable us to assess the trends and seasonal variability of phytoplankton, greenhouse gases, ozone, and marine aerosols in a sensitive and poorly documented climatic region. Without being exhaustive, MAP-IO should make it possible to better understand and assess the biological carbon pump, to study the variability of gases and aerosols in a region that is remote in relation to the main anthropogenic sources, and to monitor the transport of stratospheric ozone by the Brewer–Dobson circulation. Analysis of bacterial community structure, functional variation, and assembly mechanisms in multi-media habitats of lakes during the frozen period

Ice, water, and sediment represent three interconnected habitats in lake ecosystems, and bacteria are crucial for maintaining ecosystem equilibrium and elemental cycling across these habitats. However, the differential characteristics and driving mechanisms of bacterial community structures in the ice, water, and sediments of seasonally frozen lakes remain unclear. In this study, high-throughput sequencing technology was used to analyze and compare the structure, function, network characteristics, and assembly mechanisms of bacterial communities in the ice, water, and sediment of Wuliangsuhai, a typical cold region in Inner Mongolia. The results showed that the bacterial communities in the ice and water phases had similar diversity and composition, with Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Actinobacteria, Campilobacterota, and Cyanobacteria as dominant phyla. The bacterial communities in sediments displayed significant differences from ice and water, with Chloroflexi, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Desulfobacterota, and Acidobacteriota being the dominant phyla. Notably, the bacterial communities in water exhibited higher spatial variability in their distribution than those in ice and sediment. This study also revealed that during the frozen period, the bacterial community species in the ice, water, and sediment media were dominated by cooperative relationships. Community assembly was primarily influenced by stochastic processes, with dispersal limitation and drift identified as the two most significant factors within this process. However, heterogeneous selection also played a significant role in the community composition. Furthermore, functions related to nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, carbon, and hydrogen cycling vary among bacterial communities in ice, water, and sediment. These findings elucidate the intrinsic mechanisms driving variability in bacterial community structure and changes in water quality across different media phases (ice, water, and sediment) in cold-zone lakes during the freezing period, offering new insights for water environmental protection and ecological restoration efforts in such environments.

Redundancy and resilience of microbial community under aniline stress during wastewater treatment

Aniline is one of the most toxic and widespread organic pollutants. Although biological treatment is cost-effective and generates minimal secondary pollution, microbial communities are significantly affected by high aniline concentrations, which result in low degradation efficiency. However, a comprehensive understanding of the microbial community response to aniline stress is lacking. Here, we performed a cyclic experiment with aniline concentrations (200, 600, 1200, 600, and 200 mg/L) to investigate the ability of microbial communities to recover their performance after exposure to high aniline concentrations. At aniline concentrations up to 600 mg/L, the bioreactor exhibited high aniline removal efficiency (almost 100 %). Comamonas, Zoogloea, and Delftia played crucial roles in removing aniline and microbial beta diversity changed. Additionally, alpha diversity and network complexity decreased with increasing aniline concentration, but these metrics recovered to their original levels when the aniline concentration was returned to 200 mg/L. Homogeneous and heterogeneous selection dominated microbial community assembly. Therefore, according to the observed variations in community structure and the recovery of keystones after aniline stress, microbial community redundancy and resilience are pivotal for ensuring system stability. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the redundancy and resilience of microbial communities under aniline stress and establishes a scientific basis for managing and evaluating wastewater treatment plants.

Evaluation of the ecological quality of the macroalgal communities along the Algerian coast (Algeria, Mediterranean Sea)

The assessment and preservation of the marine environment, particularly coastal ecosystems, has emerged as a global priority. In this study, the rocky bottom quality (CFR) index, which is based on macroalgae composition and abundance, was used to assess the ecological quality of coastal waters at six sites along the Algerian coast that represent a wide range of anthropogenic pressures. The sensitivity of the CFR index to the anthropogenic pressure index (MALUSI) was also assessed. Multivariate analyses (DCA, nMDS, cluster, SIMPER, and PCA) were used to assess the variability of macroalgal community structure. The CFR index calculated for this study was compared to the EEI-c and CARLIT indices. The CFR index classified the study sites based on ecological quality: good to high quality in the western sites (Ténès, Kouali1, and Kouali2) and moderate quality in the central sites (Fontaine, Fort de l’eau, and Surcouf). The findings indicate that the CFR and MALUSI indices are highly correlated. The abundance and composition of macroalgal communities are useful indicators of rocky shore quality, as demonstrated by structural analyses of characteristic macroalgae and opportunistic species. The competitive characteristic macroalgae of the Cystoseira sensu lato species were found to be associated with sites of good and high ecological quality. Stress-tolerant characteristic macroalgae (Pachymeniopsis lanceolata, Ellisolandia elongata, and Halopteris scoparia) and opportunistic ruderal species (Ulva rigida, Ulva lactuca, and Ulva linza) were found in sites with moderate ecological quality. The CFR index was compared with the EEI-c and CARLIT indices, and it can be noted that the three indices use different spatial scales, biological levels and species classifications. Therefore, CFR, EEI-c, and CARLIT indices are useful tools for assessing the quality of coastal waters.

Spatial-temporal distributions of phytoplankton shifting, chlorophyll-a, and their influencing factors in shallow lakes using remote sensing

Understanding phytoplankton dynamics is crucial for assessing water ecosystem health. However, traditional in-situ investigations often fall short of capturing the spatial-temporal variations of phytoplankton community structure and biomass on large scales. This study introduces a novel approach that harnesses the power of machine learning models coupled with Sentinel-2 satellite data to predict phytoplankton shifting and chlorophyll-a (Chla) in three large shallow lakes in central China from 2016 to 2021. We employed an array of machine learning algorithms, including the extreme gradient boosting method (XGBoost), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) to retrieve Chla and phytoplankton groups clustered by hierarchical cluster analysis based on the Bray-Curtis similarity index (HCA). The influences of environmental factors, including meteorology and nutrients, on phytoplankton dynamics were then explored. Our results identified four distinct phytoplankton groups, each exhibiting unique structural characteristics according to the HCA. The RF and XGBoost, utilizing top-of-atmosphere reflectance, provided the most accurate estimations of phytoplankton shifting and Chla, respectively. The red edge-red ratio emerged as a key variable in both models, underlining the significance of red edge bands in phytoplankton monitoring. We mapped spatial-temporal patterns of phytoplankton group occurrence and average Chla concentration across the three lakes. Our findings indicated that eutrophication extended periods of cyanobacteria domination and algal blooms, particularly in bays and nearshore areas. Redundancy analysis and classification and regression tree model highlighted temperature as a significant driver of phytoplankton shifting, while nutrient levels exhibited stronger influences on Chla. Our study underscores the potential of integrating machine learning models with Sentinel-2 data to enhance the monitoring and prediction of phytoplankton dynamics in shallow lakes. This approach offers valuable insights for the early detection of algal blooms and informed management strategies, contributing to the preservation and sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems.

Antibiotic Pollution and Its Effects on the Spatiotemporal Variation in Microbial Community Structure and Functional Genes in Sediment of Baiyangdian Lake

Microbial communities play an important role in water quality regulation and biogeochemical cycles in lakes, and their community structure and function are affected by environmental factors. Therein, antibiotics affect the abundance, diversity, composition, and function of microbial communities. In this study, Baiyangdian Lake was selected as the study area. Sediment samples of 16 sites were collected in August 2018 and April 2019, respectively. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry （HPLC-MS/MS） was used to determine the content of typical antibiotics-quinolones （QNs） in sediment. Through high-throughput sequencing technology, the structure and function of microbial communities was analyzed in the sediments to explore the spatiotemporal variation. Thereinto, redundancy analysis （RDA） was used to identify the key influencing factors of spatiotemporal variation of microbial communities. The results showed that： ① From August to April, the average ω（QNs） showed an increasing trend, and its mean value changed from 3.91 ng·g-1 to 6.34 ng·g-1, with significant seasonal differences in oxolinic acid （OXO） and total QNs content （P < 0.05）. ② In terms of temporal variation, the dominant bacteria were Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria showed a decreasing trend, whereas Chloroflexi showed an increasing trend； at the genus level, the dominant bacteria genera in August were norank_ f__Anaerolineaceae and Thiobacilus, and the dominant bacteria genera in April were Acinetobacter and norank_ f_Anaerolineaceae, and the dominant bacteria genera had significant seasonal differences （P < 0.05）. ③ In terms of temporal variation, the index of Simpson, Chao, Ace, and OTU number all showed an increasing trend, and the seasonal differences were significant （P < 0.05）. ④ In terms of spatial variation, there were no significant spatial differences among functional genes of COG. In terms of temporal variation, there were significant seasonal differences in functional genes of energy production and conversion, carbohydrate transport and metabolism, transcription, cell wall/membrane/envelope biogenesis, and signal transduction mechanisms （P < 0.01 and P < 0.05）. ⑤ Microbial community structure and functional genes were significantly correlated with QNs （P < 0.01 and P < 0.05）, and QNs were the main influencing factors. Therefore, QNs were the main factor affecting the changes in microbial community structure and functional genes in sediments of Baiyangdian Lake. Thus, comprehensive control of antibiotic pollution in sediments should be further strengthened.

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Plankton Communities in the Chongqing Section of the National Nature Reserve for Rare and Endemic Fishes in the Upper Yangtze River

In order to understand the community structure of plankton and environmental factors in the Chongqing section of the National Nature Reserve for Rare and Endemic Fishes (referred to as the “Reserve”) along the upper Yangtze River, this study investigated phytoplankton and zooplankton in the water body from 2021 to 2022. The results revealed a diverse phytoplankton community with 243 species from 105 genera and 8 phyla, dominated by Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta. Phytoplankton showed average densities of 1.7 × 106 cells/L and biomass of 2.6221 mg/L, following a seasonal pattern of summer > spring > winter. Zooplankton analysis identified 141 species from 77 genera and 4 phyla, with rotifers most abundant, followed by protozoa. Zooplankton displayed average densities of 0.17 × 104 ind./L and biomass of 0.3226 mg/L, also following a seasonal pattern of summer > spring > winter. Total phosphorus (TP) emerged as the primary environmental factor influencing plankton community structure, positively correlating with phytoplankton density and zooplankton biomass. Plankton biodiversity indices classified water quality in the Chongqing section of the “Reserve” as oligo-/mesotrophic. Overall, plankton diversity in this section is notably rich, with similar species composition between mainstems and tributaries but seasonal variations in community structure. While mainstem water quality generally meets standards, some tributaries exhibit varying degrees of pollution, underscoring the need for improved ecological management and protection measures. This is crucial for maintaining the sustainability of the ecosystem.

Alpine grassland community productivity and diversity differences influence significantly plant sexual reproduction strategies.

Whether and how community structure variation affects plant sexual reproduction is crucial for understanding species' local adaptation and plant community assembly, but remains unrevealed. In Qinghai-Tibetan grassland communities that differed in aboveground biomass (AGB) and species diversity, we found significant influence of AGB on both species' reproductive biomass allocation (RBA) and flowering and fruiting time, but of species diversity only on species' reproductive time. In high-AGB or high-diversity communities, smaller and earlier flowering species generally advanced their reproductive phenology and increased their reproductive allocation for maximizing their reproductive success, whereas larger and later flowering species delayed their reproductive phenology and decreased their reproductive allocation for maximizing their vegetative growth and resource competition. This change in reproductive allocation with the variation in community structures was more pronounced in nonclonal as compared to clonal plant species. Thus, we evidence an important influence of community structure on plant sexual reproduction strategies, and the pattern of the influence depends largely on species biological attributes.

Microplastics predominantly affect gut microbiota by altering community structure rather than richness and diversity: A meta-analysis of aquatic animals

The impacts of microplastics on the gut microbiota, a crucial component of the health of aquatic animals, remain inadequately understood. This phylogenetically controlled meta-analysis aims to identify general patterns of microplastic effects on the alpha diversity (richness and Shannon index), beta diversity, and community structure of gut microbiota in aquatic animals. Data from 63 peer-reviewed articles on the Web of Science were synthesized, encompassing 424 observations across 31 aquatic species. The analysis showed that microplastics significantly altered the community structure of gut microbiota, with between-group distances being 87.75% higher than within-group distances. This effect was significant even at environmentally relevant concentrations (≤1 mg L−1). However, their effects on richness, Shannon index, and beta diversity (community variation) were found to be insignificant. The study also indicated that the effects of microplastics were primarily dependent on their concentration and size, while the phylogeny of tested species explained limited heterogeneity. Furthermore, variations in gut microbiota alpha diversity, beta diversity, and community structure were correlated with changes in antioxidant enzyme activities from the liver and hepatopancreas. This implies that gut microbiota attributes of aquatic animals may provide insights into host antioxidant levels. In summary, this study illuminates the impacts of microplastics on the gut microbiota of aquatic animals and examines the implications of these effects for host health. It emphasizes that microplastics mainly alter the community structure of gut microbiota rather than significantly affecting richness and diversity.

Comparison of the coexistence pattern of mangrove macrobenthos between natural and artificial reforestation.

The abandoned pond-to-mangrove restoration project provides greater advantages than tidal flats afforestation in restoring mangrove ecosystem services and will be the primary method for mangrove restoration in the future. The existing methods for abandoned pond-to-mangrove restoration include artificial restoration through 'dike-breaking, filling with imported soil and tree planting' and natural restoration through 'dike-breaking and natural succession'. However, little is known about which restoration strategy (natural or artificial restoration) provides more benefits to the biodiversity of mangrove macrobethos. Given a prevailing view suggested that artificial restoration should be the preferred approach for accelerating recovery of biodiversity and vegetation structure in tropical regions, we hypothesised higher macrobenthic biodiversity and more complex community structure in artificial restoration than in natural restoration. To test this hypothesis, macrobenthic biodiversity and ecological processes were monitored in a typical abandoned pond-to-mangrove area of Dongzhaigang Bay, China, where artificial and natural restoration methods were used concurrently. Differences in macrobenthic biodiversity, community structure and ecological processes were compared using diversity indices, complex network analysis and null models. Similar species composition and ecological niche overlap and width among macrobenthos were observed at artificial and natural restoration sites. The biotic heterogeneity and interaction among macrobenthos were higher at the natural restoration sites than at the artificial restoration sites. Macrobenthos community assembly at natural and artificial restoration sites was both determined by deterministic processes, with environmental filtering dominating, which explained 52% and 54% of the variations in macrobenthic community structures respectively. Although our findings did not validate the research hypothesis, higher biotic heterogeneity and species interaction among macrobenthos could support natural restoration as the primary method for abandoned pond-to-mangrove projects, because it is a nature-based solution for mangrove restoration.

Effects of Rehydration on Bacterial Diversity in the Rhizosphere of Broomcorn Millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) after Drought Stress at the Flowering Stage.

This study aimed to elucidate responses of the bacterial structure and diversity of the rhizosphere in flowering broomcorn millet after rehydration following drought stress. In this study, the broomcorn millet varieties 'Hequ red millet' (A1) and 'Yanshu No.10' (A2), known for their different drought tolerance levels, were selected as experimental materials. The plants were subjected to rehydration after drought stress at the flowering stage, while normal watering (A1CK and A2CK) served as the control. Soil samples were collected at 10 days (A11, A21, A1CK1, and A2CK1) and 20 days (A12, A22, A1CK2, and A2CK2) after rehydration. High-throughput sequencing technology was employed to investigate the variations in bacterial community structure, diversity, and metabolic functions in the rhizosphere of the broomcorn millet at different time points following rehydration. The findings indicated that the operational taxonomic units (OTUs) of bacteria in the rhizosphere of broomcorn millet were notably influenced by the duration of treatment, with a significant decrease in OTUs observed after 20 days of rehydration. However, bacterial Alpha diversity was not significantly impacted by rehydration following drought stress. The bacterial community in the rhizosphere of broomcorn millet was mainly composed of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria. After rewatering for 10 to 20 days after drought stress, the abundance of Sphingomonas and Aeromicrobium in the rhizosphere soil of the two varieties of broomcorn millet decreased gradually. Compared with Yanshu No.10, the abundance of Pseudarthrobacter in the rhizosphere of Hequ red millet gradually increased. A Beta diversity analysis revealed variations in the dissimilarities of the bacterial community which corresponded to different rehydration durations. The relative abundance of bacterial metabolic functions in the rhizosphere of broomcorn millet was lower after 20 days of rehydration, compared to measurements after 10 days of rehydration. This observation might be attributed to the exchange of materials between broomcorn millet and microorganisms during the initial rehydration stage to repair the effects of drought, as well as to the enrichment of numerous microorganisms to sustain the stability of the community structure. This study helps to comprehend the alterations to the bacterial structure and diversity in the rhizosphere of broomcorn millet following drought stress and rehydration. It sheds light on the growth status of broomcorn millet and its rhizosphere microorganisms under real environmental influences, thereby enhancing research on the drought tolerance mechanisms of broomcorn millet.

Soil pH and Nutrient Content Sustain Variability of Soil Bacterial Community Structure and Activity after Forest Clear-Cutting

Clear-cutting is the most robust intervention in a forest ecosystem, causing marked changes in ecosystem processes. Although the effects of forest harvesting have been widely investigated, comparative studies can provide vital supplementary information concerning specific fields, including changes in soil microbiota structure and functioning. Our study examined the soil bacterial community composition, diversity, and activity of a mixed pedunculate oak stand over three years after clear-cutting based on 16S rRNA sequencing and substrate-induced respiration data. In addition, we conducted a yearly comparison with a control oak stand already in the regeneration phase. According to our results, the forest harvest caused only limited changes in the diversity, structure, and activity of the soil bacterial community of the oak stand, suggesting that soil parameters influence the soil bacterial community structure and functioning more significantly than the cessation of forest cover.
