Sulfur isotope and trace element geochemistry of sulfides from the unique Yaojialing Zn-Au-Cu deposit, Lower Yangtze River Metallogenic Belt, China: Implications for ore-forming process and exploration

The Yaojialing Zn-Au‑Cu deposit is a porphyry-skarn-epithermal vein-type compound deposit that consists of epithermal vein-type lead‑zinc‑silver orebodies, skarn Zn-Cu-Au orebodies, and porphyry CuAu orebodies from shallow level to depth. We decipher the source and metallogenic mechanism by studying the trace element and S isotopic compositions of sulfides (pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and galena) from three types of orebodies. The collected pyrite can be divided into two types. PyI coexists with chalcopyrite, and PyII coexists with sphalerite or galena. In addition, PyI was further divided into PyIa (collected from porphyry copper bodies) and PyIb (collected from skarn copper bodies). PyII can be further divided into PyIIa (collected from skarn-type lead‑zinc ore body) and PyIIb (collected from vein lead‑zinc ore body in strata). Sphalerite and galena from skarn-type PbZn ore bodies and shallow vein-type PbZn ore bodies are named SpI and GnI, and SpII and GnII, respectively.Pyrite and sphalerite trace element thermometers revealed that the temperature of the ore-forming fluids decreased from 500 to 600 °C in the porphyry ore body to 300– 360 °C in the skarn ore body and then to 240– 280 °C in the shallow vein ore body. The decrease in the Co and Ni contents of pyrite collected from deep to shallow depths may indicate that meteoric water precipitated in the late ore-forming hydrothermal system. Rapid crystallization and variations in the physicochemical states (such as temperature, pH, fO2, and geochemical composition) of the fluids resulted in an obvious oscillating zone of euhedral PyI pyrite particles. It also affects the solubility of trace metal elements and leads to the selective entry of these elements into pyrite. PyII also shows obvious zonation characteristics rather than oscillating zonation, indicating that the growth rate of pyrite is relatively slow. Moreover, the relationships between the Au and As contents in the two types of pyrite are different. PyI is coupled, while PyII shows decoupling. We believe that this phenomenon is due to the high content of As in ore-forming fluid systems, which may inhibit the absorption of Au on the surface of pyrite rather than the decoupling of Au and As caused by rapid crystallization, based on the rapid increase in As content and non-oscillating zonation in PyII. According to the analysis of the sulfur isotopes of various sulfides, the solid evidences suggest that the ore-forming materials of each type of orebody in the Yaojialing deposit were mainly derived from magmatic-hydrothermal processes and that the fractionation of sulfur isotopes was the result of variations in physicochemical conditions caused by magma-hydrothermal evolution rather than the addition of foreign sulfur sources.

In Situ LA-ICP-MS of Zoned Garnets from the Huanggang Skarn Iron–Tin Polymetallic Deposit, Southeastern Mongolia, Northern China

The Huanggang deposit is the most important and largest skarn Fe–Sn polymetallic deposit in the Southern Great Xing’an Range of Northeast China. Cassiterite, magnetite, and other metal minerals are related to the garnets within skarn systems. The zoned garnets from various skarn stages are able to record numerous geological and mineralizing processes including variations in physicochemical conditions and hydrothermal fluid evolution. In this contribution, we present the mineralogy, systematic major, trace, and rare earth element (REE) concentrations of zoned garnets from the Huanggang Fe–Sn polymetallic skarn deposit. The in situ analytical results of garnets in the prograde skarn stage from andradite core (Grt I) to grossular rim (Grt II) reveal that core sections were formed from a fluid that was generally LREE-rich, with relatively high ∑REE, high LREE/HREE ratios, and weak negative Eu anomalies, whereas rim sections were crystallized from a fluid that was typically HREE-rich, with relatively low ∑REE, low LREE/HREE ratios, and obviously negative Eu anomalies. The garnets of the retrograde skarn stage from Fe3+-rich andradite core (Grt III) to andradite rim (Grt IV) demonstrate that the core sections have a flat trend with high ∑REE and obvious negative Eu anomalies, whereas rim sections were formed from a fluid with relatively low ∑REE, HREE-rich and obviously negative Eu anomalies. The garnets from the prograde skarn stage principally display relatively lower U and higher Y and F concentrations than those from the retrograde skarn stage. Based on optical and textural characteristics, REE patterns, Eu anomalies, and trace element variations in zoned garnets, it can be shown that, during skarn formation, Huanggang hydrothermal fluids shifted from near-neutral pH, oxidizing conditions, and high W/R ratios with relatively low LREE/HREE ratios characteristics to acidic, reducing conditions, and low W/R ratios with relatively high LREE/HREE ratios characteristics. We infer that variations in fluid compositions and physicochemical conditions may exert major control on formation and evolution of garnets and skarn hydrothermal fluids.

Phylogenetic and functional diverse ANME-1 thrive in Arctic hydrothermal vents.

The methane-rich areas, the Loki's Castle vent field and the Jan Mayen vent field at the Arctic Mid Ocean Ridge (AMOR), host abundant niches for anaerobic methane-oxidizers, which are predominantly filled by members of the ANME-1. In this study, we used a metagenomic-based approach that revealed the presence of phylogenetic and functional different ANME-1 subgroups at AMOR, with heterogeneous distribution. Based on a common analysis of ANME-1 genomes from AMOR and other geographic locations, we observed that AMOR subgroups clustered with a vent-specific ANME-1 group that occurs solely at vents, and with a generalist ANME-1 group, with a mixed environmental origin. Generalist ANME-1 are enriched in genes coding for stress response and defense strategies, suggesting functional diversity among AMOR subgroups. ANME-1 encode a conserved energy metabolism, indicating strong adaptation to sulfate-methane-rich sediments in marine systems, which does not however prevent global dispersion. A deep branching family named Ca. Veteromethanophagaceae was identified. The basal position of vent-related ANME-1 in phylogenomic trees suggests that ANME-1 originated at hydrothermal vents. The heterogeneous and variable physicochemical conditions present in diffuse venting areas of hydrothermal fields could have favored the diversification of ANME-1 into lineages that can tolerate geochemical and environmental variations.

Virus-to-prokaryote ratio in the Salar de Huasco and different ecosystems of the Southern hemisphere and its relationship with physicochemical and biological parameters.

The virus-to-prokaryote ratio (VPR) has been used in many ecosystems to study the relationship between viruses and their hosts. While high VPR values indicate a high rate of prokaryotes' cell lysis, low values are interpreted as a decrease in or absence of viral activity. Salar de Huasco is a high-altitude wetland characterized by a rich microbial diversity associated with aquatic sites like springs, ponds, streams and a lagoon with variable physicochemical conditions. Samples from two ponds, Poza Rosada (PR) and Poza Verde (PV), were analyzed by epifluorescence microscopy to determine variability of viral and prokaryotic abundance and to calculate the VPR in a dry season. In addition, to put Salar de Huasco results into perspective, a compilation of research articles on viral and prokaryotic abundance, VPR, and metadata from various Southern hemisphere ecosystems was revised. The ecosystems were grouped into six categories: high-altitude wetlands, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Southern Oceans and Antarctic lakes. Salar de Huasco ponds recorded similar VPR values (an average of 7.4 and 1.7 at PR and PV, respectively), ranging from 3.22 to 15.99 in PR. The VPR variability was associated with VA and chlorophyll a, when considering all data available for this ecosystem. In general, high-altitude wetlands recorded the highest VPR average (53.22 ± 95.09), followed by the Oceans, Southern (21.91 ± 25.72), Atlantic (19.57 ± 15.77) and Indian (13.43 ± 16.12), then Antarctic lakes (11.37 ± 15.82) and the Pacific Ocean (6.34 ± 3.79). Physicochemical variables, i.e., temperature, conductivity, nutrients (nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate) and chlorophyll a as a biological variable, were found to drive the VPR in the ecosystems analyzed. Thus, the viral activity in the Wetland followed similar trends of previous reports based on larger sets of metadata analyses. In total, this study highlights the importance of including viruses as a biological variable to study microbial temporal dynamics in wetlands considering their crucial role in the carbon budgets of these understudied ecosystems in the southern hemisphere.

The ecological benefits of adding topographic complexity to seawalls vary across estuarine gradients

Artificial structures such as seawalls increasingly dominate marine urban environments. As compared to natural rocky shore habitats, seawalls are usually flat, featureless, vertical surfaces that support reduced biodiversity. One approach to increase their biodiversity is to add topographic complexity (‘complexity’) that increases microhabitat diversity and surface area. Initial investigations of the effects of complexity on the biodiversity of marine built structures found positive relationships, but more recently spatially variable effects have been found at a biogeographical scale. The present study tested whether at the scale of sites within an estuary (in this case Sydney Harbour), effects of complexity also spatially vary, and whether pollution and estuarine gradients are good predictors of this variation. Comparisons of intertidal communities colonising flat and complex (creviced / ridged) tiles, affixed to seawalls confirmed that effects of complexity were spatially variable at the site-scale, ranging from neutral to highly positive. Proximity to stormdrains, a point source of contaminants including metals, was a poor predictor of complexity effects, but effects were generally greater in the outer harbour, where biodiversity was overall greater, than the inner harbour. These results suggest that eco-engineering interventions based on complexity will not have universally positive effects and instead vary between sites separated by as little as hundreds of meters. Knowledge of spatial variation in physico-chemical conditions and the size and composition of the species pool of available colonists may assist in predicting when and where adding complexity to marine built structures will be of ecological benefit.

Modeling of Nitrification Kinetics in a Respirometric Biosensor under Suboptimal Conditions

Sensitive detection with cell biosensors requires optimization of their working conditions and standardization of the response in variable physicochemical conditions. The introduction of an analyte to a sensor, which contributes to this variability, may account for the modeling of microbial metabolism. We constructed a multiparameter model of a water toxicity sensor of Automatic Biodetector for Water Toxicity (ABTOW), developed by our group and based on nitrifying bacteria. The model describes the kinetics of nitrification as a function of four orthogonal parameters: temperature, pH, oxygen and ammonium concentration. Furthermore, we characterized the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the ABTOW readout as a function of these parameters. Thus, a region of parameter space corresponding to optimal ABTOW operation is identified and its sensitivity quantified. We applied the model to describe the ABTOW performance in non-equilibrium conditions produced by rapid changes in pH and temperature. In sum, the model based on four physicochemical parameters describes changes in the biosensor’s activity, the biological element of which are nitrifying bacteria characterized by simple chemolithoautotrophic metabolism. The description of reaction kinetics through multiparameter modeling in combination with stability analysis can find application in process control in biotechnology, biodetection and environmental research.

Complex magmatic processes recorded by clinopyroxene phenocrysts in a magmatic plumbing system: A case study of mafic volcanic rocks from the Laiyang Basin, southeastern North China Craton

Understanding the evolution of magmatic plumbing systems requires an understanding of the mechanisms of magma ascent from the magma source to the surface. We undertook textural and in situ geochemical studies of clinopyroxene phenocrysts in Early Cretaceous mafic volcanic rocks from the Laiyang Basin, China. Four distinct clinopyroxene populations were recognized based on their textures and zoning patterns in the mafic volcanic rocks (types 1, 2, 3, and 4). Type 1 is reversely zoned and contains rounded, irregularly resorbed, low-Mg cores (Mg# = 60–75) surrounded by clear, high-Mg mantles (Mg# = 75–90). Type 2 phenocrysts are typically normally zoned and characterized by relatively high-Mg cores (Mg# > 85) and thin lower Mg# rims (Mg# = 70–85). Type 3 comprises strong oscillatory zoned crystals (Mg# = 72–85) that are generally normally zoned and, in some cases, exhibit substantial sector zoning. Type 4 crystals are euhedral and unzoned phenocrysts. The textural and compositional features of the clinopyroxenes record complex magmatic processes including fractional crystallization, recycling of early formed crystals, magma convection, and magma recharge and subsequent mixing. Clinopyroxene–melt equilibrium pairs in the volcanic rocks yielded a relatively wide range of temperatures (984–1264°C) and pressures (0.1–10.1 kbar). The P–T array defines two main magma storage zones: (1) a deep, high-T, magma reservoir (~22–28 km), and (2) a shallow, low-T, magma reservoir (~8–19 km). At pressures of >3 kbar, the amount of water in melts in equilibrium with the clinopyroxene is in the range 1.5–3.0 wt.%, but at pressures of <3 kbar, the melt water contents decrease to 0.1 wt.%, indicative of extensive magma degassing. The clinopyroxene phenocrysts have a wide range of 87Sr/86Sr ratios from 0.70683 to 0.71366. The broad range of 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.70796–0.71171) for the most primitive clinopyroxene (Mg# > 89) might have been inherited from a heterogeneous mantle source. However, some type 1 crystals with more radiogenic Sr isotopic compositions may record assimilation of crustal material during evolution of the mantle-derived magma. The textural and compositional features of the studied clinopyroxene phenocrysts suggest that Laiyang volcano is fed by a vertically extensive magmatic plumbing system that extends from shallow to deep levels, in which geochemically distinct magmas crystallized and mixed under variable physicochemical conditions.

Bioavailability of metals in coastal lagoon sediments and their influence on benthic foraminifera

Coastal lagoons experience removal and leaching of metals due to seasonal fluctuation of salinity coupled with pH and dissolved oxygen variability. Benthic foraminifers are susceptible to seasonal variation in physicochemical conditions. Assessment of bioavailable fraction of selected metals in sediments along the salinity gradient of the largest brackish lagoon in Asia- Chilika was carried out. Further, population density and abnormality index of foraminifera in the sediments were calculated to understand the influence of bioavailable metal on benthic foraminifera. Metal concentrations were higher in the low salinity regions and decreased towards the high salinity regions. This suggests river discharge controls the metal input and distribution in the lagoon. Overall, metal concentrations are high in the residual fraction (F4) followed by interplay within the reducible (F2) or oxidizable (F3) fractions, except for Mn. The seasonal fluctuations of pH and cyclic oxygen deficiency intensified the leaching of Fe, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the bioavailable fraction in the low salinity region of the lagoon. The presence of metals in bioavailable fractions impacted the normal growth of the abundant Ammonia species. Despite low bioavailable metal concentrations, higher morphological abnormalities were observed in the high salinity regions due to higher energy conditions near the sea. Therefore, abnormalities in the benthic foraminifera are attributed to bioavailability of metals from sediments and natural stress conditions in the coastal lagoon environment.

Atomic force microscopy to assess the mechanical properties of individual casein micelles

Casein micelles (CMs) are ∼100 nm natural colloids found in milk resulting from the complex and unresolved association of casein monomers, phosphorus, and calcium; the latter being either directly bound to the phosphoserine residues of caseins or present as nanoclusters of insoluble micellar calcium phosphate (MCP). Dairy products such as cheese or yogurt are colloidal gels formed by CMs destabilization, for which texture and ability to be processed are essentially determined by rheological properties. Those properties depend on the physico-chemical conditions used during gel formation (e.g., pH, temperature, ionic content). However, questions remain about the origin of this dependence at the microscopic scale. In particular, we still do not have a clear picture of the specific contributions of the rigidity of the elementary bricks (CMs) in comparison with the inter-particles interactions or their spatial distribution. In this work, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is used to evaluate changes in the nanomechanical properties of single CMs following physico-chemical modifications that are known to affect the MCP content and the rheology of the enzymatic milk gel (i.e. decrease of pH and CaCl2 addition). AFM is used as a direct indenter that assesses the CMs’ elastic deformation and gives an estimate of their Young modulus. We show that for a ±18–24% w/w depletion or enrichment in MCP content, the Young modulus of CMs significantly decreases or increases, respectively. This correlation suggests that variations in the modulus of individual CMs could explain the changes in the macroscopic properties of the enzymatic milk gel upon variations of physico-chemical conditions.

Sediment and their bacterial communities in an industrialized estuary after Hurricane Harvey

Estuaries experience variable physicochemical conditions, especially after hurricanes and due to anthropogenic sources of pollution. Their microbial communities are not as well understood in terms of community structure and diversity, particularly in response to stresses from pollution and severe events. This study presents a 16S rRNA-based description of sediment microbial communities in the Houston Ship Channel-Galveston Bay estuary after Hurricane Harvey in 2017. A total of 11 sites were sampled, and microbial genomic DNA was isolated from sediment. The presence and abundance of specific bacterial and archaeal taxa in the sediment indicated pollutant inputs from identified legacy sources. The abundance of certain microbial groups was explained by the mobilization of contaminated sediment and sediment transport due to Harvey. Several microorganisms involved in the biodegradation of xenobiotics were observed. The spatial occurrence of Dehalococcoidia, a degrader of persistent polychlorinated compounds, was explained in relation to sediment properties and contaminant concentrations.

Native gold enrichment process during growth of chalcopyrite-lined conduits within a modern hydrothermal chimney (Manus Basin, PNG)

Abstract Seafloor hydrothermal chimneys from back-arc basins are important hosts for metals such as Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag, and Au. Although the general growth history of chimneys has been well documented, recent studies have revealed that the fine-scale mineralogy can be highly complex and reflects variable physicochemical conditions of formation. This study utilized a novel combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-based electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy (SXFM) to uncover the detailed growth processes of multiple chalcopyrite-lined conduits within a modern chalcopyrite-sphalerite chimney from Manus Basin and to assess the controls on native gold precipitation. On the basis of previous studies, the chimney conduit was thought to develop from an initial sulfate-dominated wall, which was subsequently dissolved and replaced by sphalerite and chalcopyrite during gradual mixing of hydrothermal fluids and seawater. During this process, sphalerite was epitaxially overgrown by chalcopyrite. Accretionary growth of chalcopyrite onto this early formed substrate thickened the chimney walls by bi-directional growth inward and outward from the original tube wall, also enclosing the outgrown pyrite cluster. A group of similar conduits with slightly different mineral assemblages continued to form in the vicinity of the main conduit during the further fluid mixing process. Four types of distinct native gold-sulfide/sulfosalt associations were developed during the varying mixing of hydrothermal fluids and seawater. Previously unobserved chains of gold nanoparticles occur at the boundary of early sphalerite and chalcopyrite, distinct from gold observed in massive sphalerite as identified in other studies. These observations provide baseline data in a well-preserved modern system for studies of enrichment mechanisms of native gold in hydrothermal chimneys. Furthermore, native gold is relatively rarely observed in chalcopyrite-lined conduit walls. Our observations imply that: (1) native gold is closely associated with various sulfides/sulfosalts in chalcopyrite-lined conduit walls rather than limited to the association with tennantite, Bi-rich minerals, and bornite as reported previously; and (2) the broad spectrum of gold occurrence in chalcopyrite-line conduits is likely to be determined by the various mixing process between hot hydrothermal fluids with surrounding fluids or seawater. Quantitative modeling of fluid mixing processes is recommended in the future to probe the precise gold deposition stages to efficiently locate gold in modern hydrothermal chimneys.

Uranium mobility and deposition over 1.3 Ga in the Westmoreland area (McArthur Basin, Australia)

The Westmoreland area is located in the southern part of the McArthur Basin (Australia) and hosts several uranium (U) deposits and prospects. Previous studies proposed that U mineralisation formed under conditions similar to the unconformity-related U deposits of the Alligator Rivers Uranium Field (ARUF), located north of the McArthur Basin. Detailed mineralogical, geochemical and geochronological studies on mineralised intervals from the Redtree, Junnagunna, and Huarabagoo deposits, and integration with previous studies, identified at least six generations of uranium oxides. These formed between ca. 1680 and 350 Ma, highlighting protracted mobility of U over 1.3 Ga. Each generation of uranium oxide has a specific chemical composition, indicating variable physicochemical conditions for their formation throughout this period. Although the 1680-Ma mineralising event formed at the same time and with similar mineralising fluids as the unconformity-related U deposits from the ARUF, the physicochemical conditions differed between the two areas. Deposits of the Westmoreland area lack the typical Mg– and B–metasomatism of the unconformity-related U deposits in the ARUF: in the Westmoreland area, the chlorite is Mg-poor and no B minerals are observed, whereas the ARUF is marked by Mg-rich chlorite, between clinochlore and Mg–amesite, Mg–foitite, and alumino–phosphate–sulfate minerals. The chondrite-normalised REE patterns of uranium oxides are enriched in light rare earth elements (LREEs) or flat, compared with the typical bell shape of the unconformity-related U deposits. Chlorite thermometry indicates significantly higher temperature conditions (> 300 °C) than in the ARUF for the early U stages. Based on these results, mineralisation in the Westmoreland area is thus significantly different from the unconformity-related U deposits in the ARUF and in other sedimentary basins. Collectively, the data point towards atypical ore-forming processes for basin-related U deposits in the Westmoreland area, but show some similarities with those known in the U deposits of the Otish Basin (Quebec, Canada).

Accumulation of antibiotic-resistant genes in anaerobic biofilm reactor fed with household chemical products.

This research aims to determine the presence of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARG) in anaerobic biofilm reactors (ABR) fed with household chemical products (HCP) such as laundry detergents and handwash without any influx of antibiotics. The ABR comprised a three-chamber design with bottom sludge, a middle chamber containing fluidized PVC spiral, and a top chamber with packed coir fiber as a biofilm support medium, respectively. Four different ABRs were simultaneously operated for a prolonged period (200 day) and subjected to variations in physicochemical conditions. The ABRs fed with HCP exhibited solitary accumulation of log (4.4–7.5) ermC gene copies/g VS whereas, ARG was undetectable in glucose fed ABRs indicating that HCP exhibited antimicrobial activities synonyms to Erythromycin. Accumulation of Erythromycin-C (ermC) was relatively higher on the biofilm inhabiting PVC support medium and further accentuated by effluent recycling to log 7.5 ermC gene copies at a ratio of ermC/16S gene copies of 0.65. Physico-chemical factors such as substrate composition, biofilm support medium, and effluent recycling simultaneously elevated the concentration of ermC genes. Chlorite and Epidote Mineral Chemistry in Porphyry Ore Systems: A Case Study of the Northparkes District, New South Wales, Australia

Abstract Propylitic alteration, characterized by the occurrence of chlorite and epidote, is typically the most extensive and peripheral alteration facies developed around porphyry ore deposits. However, exploration within this alteration domain is particularly challenging, commonly owing to weak or nonexistent whole-rock geochemical gradients and the fact that similar assemblages can be developed in other geologic settings, particularly during low-grade metamorphism. We document and interpret systematic spatial trends in the chemistry of chlorite and epidote from propylitic alteration around the E48 and E26 porphyry Cu-Au deposits of the Northparkes district, New South Wales, Australia. These trends vary as a function of both distance from hydrothermal centers and alteration paragenesis. The spatial trends identified in porphyry-related chlorite and epidote at Northparkes include (1) a deposit-proximal increase in Ti, As, Sb, and V in epidote and Ti in chlorite, (2) a deposit-distal increase in Co and Li in chlorite and Ba in epidote, and (3) a pronounced halo around deposits in which Mn and Zn in chlorite, as well as Mn, Zn, Pb, and Mg in epidote, are elevated. Chlorite Al/Si ratios and epidote Al/Fe ratios may show behavior similar to that of Mn-Zn or may simply decrease outward, and V and Ni concentrations in chlorite are lowest in the peak Mn-Zn zone. In comparison to porphyry-related samples, chlorite from the regional metamorphic assemblage in the district contains far higher concentrations of Li, Ca, Ba, Pb, and Cu but much less Ti. Similarly, metamorphic epidote contains higher concentrations of Sr, Pb, As, and Sb but less Bi and Ti. These chlorite and epidote compositional trends are the net result of fluid-mineral partitioning under variable physicochemical conditions within a porphyry magmatic-hydrothermal system. They are most easily explained by the contribution of spent magmatic-derived ore fluid(s) into the propylitic domain. It is envisaged that such fluids experience progressive cooling and reduction in fs2 during outward infiltration into surrounding country rocks, with their pH controlled by the extent of rock-buffering experienced along the fluid pathway.

Oscillatory Zoning in Tennantite-(Fe) at the Darasun Gold Deposit (Eastern Transbaikal Region, Russia)

Oscillatory zoning in tennantite-(Fe) crystals found in carbonate–sulfide aggregates at the Darasun gold deposit has been studied. Similar elements have been distinguished in zoned crystals: core, “identical oscillatory rhythm,” rhythms with crystallographic and wavy oscillatory zoning, and rim with poorly defined fine oscillatory zoning. Oscillatory zoning is due to considerable variations in the contents of semimetals (As and Sb) and formally divalent metals (Fe and Zn). Variations in As and Sb are coupled with changes in Fe and Zn, respectively. Both As and Fe contents increase in zoned crystals from the center to the edge: Sb/(Sb + As) ratio varies from 0.44 to 0.03, while Fe/(Fe + Zn) ratio varies from 0.38 to 0.75. The evolution of the composition of zoned tennantite-(Fe) crystals is similar to that of the fahlore at the deposit and to that in pseudomorphic rhythmically zoned tennantite aggregates. A negative relationship between Sb/(Sb + As) and Fe/(Fe + Zn) ratios has been revealed: it is stronger in the internal rhythms than in the external. The oscillatory zoning formed under conditions close to local equilibrium under the influence of external factors at the early crystal growth stages. The composition of zones reflects (random) fluctuations of the external parameters caused by variations in physicochemical conditions (T, fS2, fO2, and pH) and fluid composition, by fluid boiling or mixing of fluids from different sources. Subsequently, changes in the crystal morphology, irregular fluctuations in crystal compositions, and various trends in the behavior of components were caused by the appearance of a concentration gradient at the mineral–fluid boundary and kinetic phenomena on the mineral growth surface. The zoning developed under the influence of “internal” mechanisms under conditions far from equilibrium due to the interrelation between the growth of zones enriched in one component, resulting from the concentration gradient at the crystal–fluid boundary, and the incorporation of another component, in particular, as a result of the self-organization process uninfluenced by external factors. It has been concluded that the oscillatory zoning in fahlore is caused by the difference in solubility of the end-members of the tennantite–tetrahedrite solid solution due to changes in the metal and semimetal migration conditions with a decrease in temperature and fluid salinity. Hence, the oscillatory zoning in tennantite-(Fe) crystals at the Darasun deposit was related to self-organization processes complicated by random fluctuations (noise) of the external parameters.

Impact of artificial digestion on the sizes and shapes of microplastic particles

Current analyses show a widespread occurrence of microplastic particles in food products and raise the question of potential risks to human health. Plastic particles are widely considered to be inert due to their low chemical reactivity and therefore supposed to pose, if at all only minor hazards. However, variable physicochemical conditions during the passage of the gastrointestinal tract gain strong importance, as they may affect particle characteristics. This study aims to analyze the impact of the gastrointestinal passage on the physicochemical particle characteristics of the five most produced and thus environmentally relevant plastic materials polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and subsequent image analysis were employed to characterize microplastic particles. Our results demonstrate a high resistance of all plastic particles to the artificial digestive juices. The present results underline that the main stages of the human gastrointestinal tract do not decompose the particles. This allows a direct correlation between the physicochemical particle characteristics before and after digestion. Special attention must be paid to the adsorption of organic compounds like proteins, mucins and lipids on plastic particles since it could lead to misinterpretations of particle sizes and shapes.

Agate mineralization in spilitized Permian volcanics from “Borówno” quarry (Lower Silesia, Poland) – microtextural, mineralogical, and geochemical constraints

Two forms of silica mineralization, i.e.: (1) vein agates and (2) moss agates, were encountered for the first time within spilitized (albite-rich) alkali-basalts from the upper parts of Borówno quarry (Intra-Sudetic Basin). Vein agates consist predominately of length-fast chalcedony evolving into strongly-zoned prismatic quartz with a distinctive blue cathodoluminescence. They exhibit the abundance of microtextures typical of epithermal vein systems (i.e. pseudo-bladed, flamboyant/feathery, jigsaw puzzle/mosaic, and Bambauer quartz), but also comprise numerous solid inclusions such as sulphides (pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and chalcocite), sulphates (barite), carbonates (calcite, dolomite), carbonaceous material, and hematite. The formation of vein agates was marked by strong variations in physicochemical conditions (pH, silica content) of SiO2-bearing fluids and recrystallization of metastable silica phases (i.e. moganite), coupled with the local replacement of pre-existing sulphates and/or carbonates by silica during boiling-related conditions. Their LREE-enriched rare-earth patterns with positive Eu anomaly invoke the close relationship between host rocks alterations (spilitization) and origin of SiO2-rich fluids. Conversely, moss agates have formed as a result of a spherical growth of siliceous phases within vesicles and contain numerous mineral inclusions of hematite, goethite, anatase, as well as ore-related phases (mottramite and dickite). The examination of their surface micro-morphology showed a strong age-related maturation marked by the development of stacked silica plates (plate-edge-like structure). The botryoidal-shaped, white-coloured, and Al-enriched outermost layer of these agates possibly reflects a rapid deposition of the initial silica gel onto the cavity walls. The HREE-enriched rare-earth patterns of the moss agates, combined with the presence of positive Eu and Ce anomalies, suggest their parental SiO2-rich fluids could be derived from multiple sources (e.g. volcanics mesostasis and/or meteoric waters). The fluids responsible for the formation of agate mineralization within alkali-basalts in Borówno could be derived from syn- or post- alterations of their host rocks.

Diversity patterns of benthic bacterial communities along the salinity continuum of the Humber estuary (UK)

Intertidal mudflats are fluctuating environments that support highly diverse microbial communities. The highly variable physico-chemical conditions complicate the understanding of the environmental controls on diversity patterns in estuarine systems. We investigated the bacterial diversity in the surface and subsurface sediments along the salinity gradient of the Humber estuary (UK) using amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and correlated its variations with environmental variables. The sediment depths sampled were selected based on the local resuspension patterns. In general, bacterial communities showed similar composition at the different sites and depths, with Proteobacteria being the most abundant phylum. The richness of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) was uniform along the salinity gradient. However, Hill numbers, as bacterial diversity measures, showed that the common and dominant OTUs exhibited a decreasing trend from the inner towards the outer estuary sites. Additionally, surface and subsurface bacterial communities were separated by non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis only in the mid- and outer estuary samples, where redox transitions with depth were more abrupt. Salinity, porewater ammonium concentration and acid-extractable Fe(II) in solids were the subset of environmental factors that best correlated with community dissimilarities. Analysis of regional diversity indicated that the dataset may include 2 potentially distinct communities: (1) a near-surface community that is the product of regular mixing and transport and is subjected to a wide range of salinity conditions, and (2) a bacterial community indigenous to the more reducing subsurface sediments of the mudflats of the mid- and outer estuary.

Influence of physical chemical water parameters on abundance and presence of the arbovirus vector Aedes Albopictus (Dipteria: Culicidae) in Larval habitats of forest fragments

Introduction The species Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) is a mosquito of great epidemiological importance because it carries several arboviruses that cause diseases in humans, including the dengue virus. In Brazil, this species was introduced in mid-1986 and nowadays is found in almost the whole country cities, developing in natural or artificial breeding sites in peri-urban and urban areas. For aquatic insects living in lentic environments, such as immature forms of mosquitoes, the physicochemical environment factors represent important constraints that can influence the development, survival and adaptation of the organism. Despite this, few studies have sought to investigate the influence of physicochemical factors on the incidence and abundance of vector mosquitoes. In this study we investigated the influence of pH, practical salinity unit (PSU), water temperature in degrees Celsius (°C) and oxygen dissolved in parts per million (DO ppm) on the incidence and abundance of Aedes albopictus collected in larval habitats found in four urban green spaces in the city of Sao Paulo. Methods Natural breeding sites (bromeliads, bamboos, trees holes, and puddles) and artificial ones were explored (water boxes, plant pots, tires, etc.) during 12 months of collection. The physicochemical parameters were measured using a multiparameter device Hanna-HI-9828. The predictive relationship between the measured physicochemical factors and the incidence and abundance of A. albopictus was evaluated by generalized additive models (GAM). Akaike Information Criterion corrected for small samples was used to select the model with the best fit and explanatory power. For a better understanding of the non-linearity of relationship between the variables, a tree regression analysis was made from the selected model. Results A total of 4212 specimens of A. albopictus were collected in 142 positive samples from both natural and artificial breeding sites. In relation to the positive samples the variation in the physicochemical parameters was: pH 2.3 to 9.8, PSU 4.8 and PSU > 0.175. The abundance was better explained by pH, salinity and temperature, with higher average abundance (151 individuals/mean) in PSU > 0.335, pH Conclusions The mosquito A. albopictus showed to be adapted to wide variations in physicochemical conditions of larval habitats, which in part explains its wide ecological valence and worldwide dispersion. The predictive models proposed in this study may be useful to help understand the relationship of A. albopictus and other vector mosquitoes with abiotic environment constraints.

Microbial Community Structure-Function Relationships in Yaquina Bay Estuary Reveal Spatially Distinct Carbon and Nitrogen Cycling Capacities.

Linking microbial community structure to ecological processes requires understanding of the functional roles among individual populations and the factors that influence their distributions. These structure–function relationships are particularly difficult to disentangle in estuaries, due to highly variable physico-chemical conditions. Yet, examining microbe-mediated turnover of resources in these “bioreactor” ecosystems is critical for understanding estuarine ecology. In this study, a combined metagenomics and metaproteomics approach was used to show that the unequal distribution of microbial populations across the Yaquina Bay estuary led to a habitat-specific taxonomic and functional structure and a clear spatial distribution in microbe-mediated capacities for cycling of carbon and nitrogen. For example, size-fractionation revealed that communities inhabiting suspended particulate material encoded more diverse types of metabolisms (e.g., fermentation and denitrification) than those with a planktonic lifestyle, suggesting that the metabolic reactions can differ between size fractions of the same parcel of an estuarine water column. Similarly, communities inhabiting oligotrophic conditions in the lower estuary were enriched in genes involved in central carbon metabolism (e.g., TCA cycle), while communities in the upper estuary were enriched in genes typical of copiotrophic populations (e.g., cell growth, cell division). Integrating gene and protein data revealed that abundant populations of Flavobacteriales and Rhodobacterales encoded similar genomic functions, yet differed significantly in protein expression, dedicating a large proportion of their respective proteomes to rapid growth and division versus metabolic versatility and resource acquisition. This suggested potentially distinct life-strategies between these two co-occurring lineages and was concomitant with differing patterns of positive evolutionary selection on their encoded genes. Microbial communities and their functions across Yaquina Bay appear to be structured by population-level habitat preferences, resulting in spatially distinct elemental cycling, while within each community, forces such as competitive exclusion and evolutionary selection influence species life-strategies and may help maintain microbial diversity.
