Effect of particle size distribution variability on the permeability of hydrate-bearing sediments: A CFD study

Natural gas hydrates (NGH) are considered as a future clean energy in the era of carbon neutrality. The seepage behaviour of hydrate-bearing sediment (HBS) and its controlling factors are significant for developing effective production strategies. In this study, we aim to elucidate how the heterogeneous spatial distribution of clayey-silty sediment particles, particularly the non-uniform particle size distribution (PSD) affects the permeability of HBS. An algorithm was developed to generate the heterogeneous spatial distribution of sediment particles based on the PSD of hydrate-bearing cores extracted from Japan Nankai Trough (D50 = 122 μm). A series simulation of fluid flow in porous media based on CFD was conducted for the HBS with varying hydrate saturations (SH). The watershed segmentation algorithm was employed for the identification of pore structure, including pore space and pore throat with a detailed analysis on the pore structure evolution with SH. Host sediments with higher uniformity result in initial high permeability but the permeability reduction with increasing SH is more significant compared with that of lower uniformity. Pore throat width reduced to less than 5 μm with SH above 50% compared with its original width of ∼30 μm. Tortuosity exhibits a linear increase with SH, while permeability decreases exponentially with increasing tortuosity. We propose an improved permeability model (KCpro) based on the classical Kozeny-Carman model accounting for the change in specific surface area for non-uniform PSD in HBS with good agreement. This study confirmed the applicability of CFD modelling as a promising tool to study the seepage behaviour of HBS complementary to classical permeability experimental tests. Results of this study provide fundamental understanding on how permeability evolves in HBS with significant PSD variations in natural gas hydrate reservoirs in nature.

Optimized strategies of cloud droplet distribution retrieval using satellite multi-directional polarimetric optical measurements: information content approach

Multi-directional polarized optical sensors are increasingly vital in passive remote sensing, deepening our understanding of global cloud properties. Nevertheless, uncertainty lingers on how these observations can contribute to our knowledge of cloud diversity. The variability in cloud PSD (Particle Size Distribution) significantly influences a wide array of cloud characteristics, while unidentified factors in RT (Radiative Transfer) may introduce errors into the cloud PSD retrieval algorithm. Therefore, establishing unified evaluation criteria for both optical device configuration and inversion methods is crucial. Our study, based on Bayesian theory and RT, assesses the information content of both cloud effective radius and effective variance retrieval, along with the key factors affecting their retrieval in multi-directional polarized observations, using the calculation of DFS (Degree of Freedom for Signals).We consider the process of solar incidence, cloud scattering, and sensor reception, and discuss the impact of various sensor configurations, cloud characteristics, and other components on the retrieval of cloud PSD. Correspondingly, we observed a 48% improvement in the information content of cloud PSD with the incorporation of multi-directional polarized measurements in the rainbow region. Cloud droplet concentration significantly influences inversion, but its PSD does not cause monotonic linear interference on information content. The blending of particle mixtures with different PSD has a significant negative impact on DFS. In cases where the AOD (Aerosol Optical Depth) is less than 0.5 and the COT (Cloud Optical Thickness) exceeds 5, the influence of aerosol and surface contributions on inversion can be neglected. Our findings would serve as a foundation for future instrument design improvements and enhancements to retrieval algorithms.

Comprehensive effects of microplastics on algae-laden surface water treatment by coagulation-ultrafiltration combined process: Algae cultivation, coagulation performance and membrane fouling development

In coastal areas, the surface water has been simultaneously exposed to the algae blooms caused by eutrophication and the microplastics (MPs) pollution originating from active human activities. As a practical alternative to address these issues in drinking water plant, coagulation-ultrafiltration combined process is still confronted with the limited understanding about the comprehensive effects of MPs on algae-laden surface water (ASW) treatment. Considering the migration of MPs in nature environment and drinking water treatment process, this study first aims to systematically investigate the influence of MPs on algae cultivation, coagulation performance and membrane fouling development. The results of algae cultivation indicate that MPs stimulated the algae activity by 58 % and then constantly suppressed the secretion of protein-like, humic-like and polysaccharide-like metabolites. The variation of particle size distribution and zeta potential confirm that MPs acted as nuclei to facilitate the development of large coagulation flocs with an increasing average size from 82.6 μm to 107.6 μm, during which the negatively charged pollutants were neutralized and removed from ASW. According to the SEM images, MPs could destroy the structure of fouling layer on 50 kDa membranes during the filtration of ASW coagulation effluent. Its synergistic effect with the enhanced coagulation performance and the suppressed EOM secretion contributed to the alleviation of membrane fouling caused by overlapped large-sized foulants. However, the interaction between the enriched organic foulants by MPs and the deposited coagulants on 300 kDa membranes facilitated the development of cake layer, leading to the deterioration of membrane permeability. This study emphasizes the importance in concerning the existence of MPs during the treatment of ASW by coagulation-ultrafiltration combined process and their exact influence in water purification efficiency.

A Three-Wavelength Optical Sensor for Measuring the Multi-Particle-Size Channel Mass Concentration of Thermal Power Plant Emissions.

Emissions from thermal power plants have always been the central consideration for environmental protection. Existing optical sensors in thermal power plants usually measure the total mass concentration of the particulate matter (PM) by a single-wavelength laser, bearing intrinsic errors owing to the variation in particle size distribution (PSD). However, the total mass concentration alone cannot characterize all the harmful effects of the air pollution caused by the power plant. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the mass concentration and PSD simultaneously, based on which we can obtain multi-particle-size channel mass concentration. To achieve this, we designed an optical sensor based on the three-wavelength technique and tested its performance in a practical environment. Results showed that the prototype cannot only correctly measure the mass concentration of the emitted PM but also determine the mean diameter and standard deviation of the PSDs. Hence, the mass concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 are calculated, and the air pollutants emission by a thermal power plant can be estimated comprehensively.

Evaluating the stabilities of common power-law models for describing particle size distributions across the continental shelf of the northern South China Sea

The accurate initial background of the high heterogeneity of particle size distributions (PSDs) is crucial for modeling the carbon cycle across the continental shelf. However, the lack of field measurements and constraints on PSDs has made this task challenging. In particular, different power-law models have been used to fit field PSDs, which can introduce bias in the calculated PSD slopes (ξs) and mislead subsequent biogeochemical modeling. This study analyzes the characteristics and variabilities of PSDs across the continental shelf of the northern South China Sea (NSCS) using field data and evaluates the stability of common power-law models for calculating ξ. The first-order variations of most regional PSDs follow the power-law distributions. However, the second-order variations of these PSDs lead to fluctuations in ξ values calculated by the different-reference-point power-law model, which lacks a correction parameter. A power-law model with a correction factor can be used to calculate ξ stably, regardless of the second-order variations of these PSDs. We recommend using this power-law model to calculate ξ, and it can be extended to describe other oceanic field PSDs. Our results also highlight the high spatial heterogeneity of ξ across the NSCS continental shelf, which should be considered in regional biogeochemical modeling. Our study provides important insights into which power-law model can be used to derive stable and comparable ξ-field datasets for the purpose of initializing and constraining of biogeochemical models.

The Characterization of Residues Related to the Roasting– Leaching–Electrowinning Zinc Production Route for Further Metal Extraction

Super-hot acid leach residue is generated during zinc production in the roasting–leaching–electrowinning route, where both primary and secondary resources are used as feed material. This residue may contain valuable metals, such as lead, zinc, and iron, as well as precious metals, such as gold and silver. Four materials, namely super-hot acid leach residue, a residue formed when super-hot acid leach residue is selectively leached for lead with triethylenetetramine, as well as flotation concentrate, and flotation tailings formed in a selective silver flotation process with super-hot acid leach residue as the feed material were characterized to obtain a deeper understanding of possible further metal extraction. These four materials were characterized for chemical composition, mineralogy, and mineral distribution via chemical analyses, X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The scanning electron microscope images showed that the materials have large variations in particle size distribution and composition. The results showed that the main lead phase in super-hot acid leach residue is lead sulfate, whereas it is mostly converted to lead sulfide during the selective lead leaching of the super-hot acid leach residue. The remaining lead sulfate is found in a solid solution with barium sulfate. Extracting lead from super-hot acid leach residue via triethylenetetramine leaching resulted in increased concentrations of gold and silver by 41% and 42%, respectively. The identified silver phases in super-hot acid leach residue may correspond to silver sulfide, silver chloride, and elementary silver, where silver sulfide was the most commonly occurring silver phase. After leaching this selectively for lead with triethylenetetramine, similar silver phases were identified, but silver sulfide and silver chloride occurred to a similar extent. Additionally, silver copper sulfide was detected. The presence of different silver phases might pose a challenge to reaching high silver recovery during leaching as the optimum leaching conditions differ somewhat. Furthermore, elemental sulfur, with a tendency to coat gold and silver particle surfaces, which is indicated to be present in all materials except the silver flotation tailings, may hinder metal extraction.

Numerical Simulation of the Effect of Particle Size Distribution on Fluidized Bed Gasifier

The rapid development of technology and industrialization has confronted humanity with two important problems: the depletion of fossil energy resources and environmental damage. This study aims to determine the effect of the particle size distribution of the bed on the composition of the produced syngas which has the potential to replace fossil fuels. The particle bed used is silica sand with 4 variations of particle size distribution with a diameter of 600-1000 µm. The results of this study indicate that the larger the particle size distribution of the bed can reduce the temperature distribution and composition of the syngas produced. The highest temperature distribution was found in the 1st particle size distribution variation of 1060.23 K. The highest syngas composition was found in the 3rd particle size distribution variation of 2.21% CH4, 19.68% CO, 6.21% CO2, and 18.51% H2The highest syngas composition was found in the 3rd particle size distribution variation of 2.21% CH4, 19.68% CO, 6.21% CO2, and 18.51% H2. The lowest temperature distribution was obtained in the 3rd particle size distribution variation of 1057.77 K. The lowest syngas composition was found in the 4th particle size distribution 1.99% CH4, 17.71% CO, 5.63% CO2, and 16.66% H2.

Characterization of suspended particles at different glacial bays at Spitsbergen

Particle size distribution (PSD) and concentration of mineral-suspended sediment released from melting glaciers are important factors affecting the local marine ecosystem, e.g. affecting the light availability in water columns, thus changing underwater light climate for photosynthetic organisms. We examined the characteristics of various samples of natural mineral assemblages suspended in different glacial bays in Hornsund and Kongsfjord at Spitsbergen. The concentrations of the total mass of particles (TSM) in suspended sediment as well as particular organic matter (POM) and particular inorganic matter mass (PIM) together with mineralogical composition and particular size distribution (PSD) were determined.In this study, we investigated the PSD properties and variability in the front of different tidewater glaciers based, laser diffractometer measurements (LISST-100x), and XRD – techniques to obtain the mineralogical composition of the particles. The sampled sites are under the strong influence of freshwater discharge from the glacier. At each station, inorganic particulate matter contributed up to 98% to total suspended matter with the particle concentration of the particle reaches up to 111 mg/l with mean surface PSD slopes ranging from 3.24 to 3.85. The result provides valuable baseline information on the observed range of variability of the size of suspended particles due to glacial runoff and the presence of particles of different mineral origin in the glacial bays.

Characterization of particle size segregation and heterogeneity along the slopes of a waste rock pile using image analysis

Large amounts of waste rock are produced during mining operations and often disposed of in large piles. Particle size segregation usually occurs during waste rock disposal, which can lead to high variations of particle size distribution (PSD) along the pile slope, increasing the risk for hydrogeotechnical instabilities. Determining segregation in situ is, therefore, critical to implement control measures and optimize deposition plans. However, characterizing PSD at field scale remains challenging because of the large dimensions of the pile, the instability of the blocks and the steep slopes. In this study, images, covering a 1400 m wide and 10 m high section of a waste rock pile, were taken and analyzed using image analysis to characterize segregation along the slope of the pile. PSD curves in different sections along the slope were determined and the segregation degree and characteristic diameters (e.g., D10, D50, D80,D95) were quantitatively compared. Results allowed to quantify segregation along the vertical direction of the pile, showing that segregation degree increased from − 0.77 ± 0.39 in the top (finer zone) to + 0.4 ± 0.14 in the bottom (coarser zone). Significant lateral heterogeneity was also observed with maximum diameters varying between 80 and 180 cm in the bottom section. Such segregation and lateral heterogeneity could induce significant variations of waste rock properties, with, for example, hydraulic conductivities varying by more than 2 orders of magnitude within the pile.

Study on the Geotechnical Property Changes of Loess after Seismic Landslides—A Case Study of the Subao Loess Landslide in Ningxia, China

This study aims to explore the differences between the loess and landslide deposits, focusing on aspects such as particle distribution, consolidation characteristics, and the dynamic shear modulus. Through a series of experiments, the research reveals the similarities and differences between these two entities, yielding several key findings. Firstly, the process of landsliding disrupts the original structure of the loess, resulting in a reduction in porosity and a densification of the soil. Additionally, the movement and sorting of particles during the landslides cause variations in particle size distribution across different sections of the landslide deposits. Secondly, the landslide process not only alters the soil’s structure but also changes the particle sizes within the loess. Particle wear and sieving results in the transformation of larger particles into smaller ones, leading to a more uniform particle size distribution. This shift in the structure and particle size directly impacts the consolidation characteristics of landslide deposits, resulting in a substantial reduction in the compression coefficient. Despite undergoing consolidation for decades, the middle and lower sections of the landslide deposits still exhibit under-consolidation. Although the differences in the maximum dynamic shear modulus between the loess and landslide deposits at varying depths are relatively minor, differences in the porosity and consolidation characteristics lead to faster decay rates of the dynamic shear modulus for the latter. The study also highlights a reduction in the water sensitivity of the maximum dynamic shear modulus within the landslide deposits. Based on the experimental results, a predictive model is proposed, utilizing the A and m values to estimate the maximum dynamic shear modulus of both the loess and landslide deposits. In conclusion, this research uncovers the impact of landslide processes on the structure and properties of the loess, providing an insightful understanding into the disparities between these two entities.

Insights into the size-resolved dust emission from field measurements in the Moroccan Sahara

Abstract. The particle size distribution (PSD) of mineral dust has a strong effect on the impacts of dust on climate. However, our understanding of the emitted dust PSD, including its variability and the fraction of super-coarse dust (diameter >10 µm), remains limited. Here, we provide new insights into the size-resolved dust emission process based on a field campaign performed in the Moroccan Sahara in September 2019 in the context of the FRontiers in dust minerAloGical coMposition and its Effects upoN climaTe (FRAGMENT) project. The obtained dust concentration and diffusive flux PSDs show significant dependencies upon the friction velocity (u*), wind direction and type of event (regular events versus haboob events). For instance, the number fraction of sub-micrometre particles increases with u*, along with a large decrease in the mass fraction of super-coarse dust. We identify dry deposition, which is modulated by u* and fetch length, as a potential cause for this PSD variability. Using a resistance model constrained with field observations to estimate the dry deposition flux and thereby also the emitted dust flux, we show that deposition could represent up to ∼90 % of the emission of super-coarse particles (>10 µm) and up to ∼65 % of the emission of particles as small as ∼5 µm in diameter. Importantly, removing the deposition component significantly reduces the variability with u* in the PSD of the emitted dust flux compared with the diffusive flux, particularly for super-coarse dust. The differences between regular and haboob event concentration and diffusive flux PSDs are suspected to result from a smaller and variable dust source fetch during the haboob events, and/or an increased resistance of soil aggregates to fragmentation associated with the observed increase in relative humidity along the haboob outflow. Finally, compared to the invariant emitted dust flux PSD estimated based on brittle fragmentation theory, we obtain a substantially higher proportion of super-micrometre particles in the dust flux. Overall, our results suggest that dry deposition needs to be adequately considered to estimate the emitted PSD, even in studies limited to the fine and coarse size ranges (<10 µm).

Enhancing the flowability of limestone water suspension for economical transportation by variation in particle size distribution

Hydrotransport is increasingly a popular technology due to its low specific energy consumption and nonpolluting nature. The current work presents a thorough characterization of a limestone sample to explore the influence of blending medium and coarse particles with fine particulate slurry on the rheology, slurryability, and stability of a limestone water suspension. Various bench-scale studies are performed to identify the physicochemical, morphological, and flow features of limestone samples. Eight separate bi-modal slurry samples are prepared using limestone materials with three unique particle size ranges (53, 53–75, and 75–106 µm). The rheological properties of the slurry are tested at shear rates ranging from 50 to 500 1/s, and regression analysis is used to determine the nature of the slurry. The solid concentration of the suspension sample ranges between 10 and 70% with a flow velocity range of 0.25–1.5 m/s through a 100 mm diameter pipeline. Finally, essential criteria such as apparent viscosity, settling properties, pressure drop, and specific energy consumption are used to determine the optimal particle size distribution. The ideal proportion of medium particles (53–75 µm) mixing in the fine particulate slurry suspension is 40%, while the fraction of coarse particles (75–106 µm) is 30% (by weight).

Effect of Soil Agricultural Use on Particle-Size Distribution in Young Glacial Landscape Slopes

In the literature, mainly particle-size distribution (PSD) analyses in the soil catenas, of e.g., moraine and riverine landscapes were discussed. Analysis and comparison of PSD in moraine (ML) and ice-dammed lakes (ID-LL) landscapes were not studied. Since the landscape of ice-dammed lakes origin has diversified relief and is under intensive agricultural use, the aspects of erosion are of great importance. The changes in PSD were studied in 14 soil catenas (toposequences) of eroding soils at the upper slope (US) as well as colluvial soils at the middle (MS) and lower (LS) slopes and in the depressions (D). The PSD of the fine fractions (<2 mm) was analysed according to the hydrometer method. In order to describe the effect of agricultural use on the variability of PSD in soil surface horizons, sedimentological and granulometric indices were calculated. In the studied moraine landscape, the content of coarse silt fraction was increasing in the catenal sequence from 9.7% in the US to 17.7% in the D. Similar relationships were revealed for the fine silt content. Significant differences were found between the average contents of coarse and fine silt fractions at the US as well as the LS and the D. However, such a relation was not found in the soil catena in the ice-dammed lake landscape. Eroded and colluvial soil materials were very poorly sorted with a standard deviation index of 2.65–3.69. Humus horizons of analysed soils had very fine, fine skewed PSD, mesokurtic and platykurtic distribution (ML), symmetrical, fine skewed and platykurtic distribution (I-DLL). The cluster analysis enabled the separation of two groups of soils: one group in the moraine landscape and the other in the ice-dammed lakes landscape. The PSD in studied soils was similar only among the soils within one type of landscape.

Fragmentation and abrasion of solid particles in cyclones of CFB reactors: Phenomenology and kinetic model constitution

Particulate material in gas-solid flow systems is under constant mechanical stress due to the collisions of solid particles with the internal walls of the equipment and inter-particle collisions. These collisions cause attrition, resulting in a reduction in particle diameter. This study aims to analyze this phenomenon by evaluating the particle size distribution flowing in a loop in a cyclone. Samples were collected after each pass in the cyclone to obtain the temporal variation of particle size distribution. Increases in the inlet velocity increased the generation of fine particles, consequently reducing the collection efficiency in the cyclone. A Simulation Study on the Effect of Layer Thickness Variation in Selective Laser Melting

Abstract Selective laser melting (SLM) has gained prominence in the manufacturing industry for its ability to produce lightweight components. As the raw material used is in powder form, the stochastic nature of the powder distribution influences the powder layer thickness and affects the final build quality. In this paper, a multi-layer multi-track simulation study is conducted to investigate the effect of stochastic powder distribution on the layer thickness and plastic strain in a printed geometry. A faster simulation approach is employed to simulate multiple layers. First, the powder distribution and the melt layer thickness of the first layer are obtained from discrete element method (DEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations respectively. Next, the melt layer thickness of the first layer is used as an input to the finite element (FE) based structural mechanics solver to predict the deformation and layer thickness of subsequent layers. Two nominal layer thicknesses 67.4 μm and 20 μm were considered. Two particle size distribution (PSD) configurations and two scanning strategies were tested. The results showed that variation in PSD and scanning strategy leads to variation in layer thickness which in turn leads to variation in the plastic strain that is known to drive the deformation. However, the nominal layer thickness of 20 μm was found to be less influenced by the PSD configuration. The proposed simulation approach and the insights achieved can be used as inputs in the part-scale simulations for geometric robustness evaluation in the early design stages of SLM products.

Phosphorus Availability from German Sewage Sludge Ashes to Plants Cultivated in Soilless Growing Media of Contrasting pH

Sewage sludge ash (SSA) as a secondary phosphorus (P) source may help to conserve global rock phosphate deposits if used in the base fertilization of soilless growing media. Plant availability of SSA-P was studied in a pot experiment with marigolds in a peat-based growing medium of contrasting pH (4.5, 6.0). Six SSAs were included in the study and compared to water-soluble monocalcium phosphate (MCP) and rock phosphate (RockP). In addition to the efficacy of SSA-P, calcium chloride + diethylenetriaminepentaacetate (CAT) and calcium-acetate-lactate (CAL), as commonly used extractants in Germany to analyze plant-available P in growing media, were tested in terms of their ability to predict plant P uptake. No SSA reached the relative P use efficiency (rPUE) observed for MCP. However, at a growing medium pH of 4.5, the average rPUE for SSA was 70% of the MCP rPUE. Compared to RockP, at a growing medium pH of 6.0, SSAs resulted in an rPUE of nearly the same low level. In contrast, at pH 4.5, the rPUE from SSAs was mostly lower than that from RockP, and there were differences in rPUE among SSA origins. Therefore, in addition to a variation in particle size distribution, there might be differences in the P-bearing phase. Sewage sludge ashes represent a promising substitute for primary P sources only in crops requiring a low pH in the growing medium. The extractants CAT and CAL, on their own or in combination, did not reflect plant P uptake from SSA. To improve the prediction of plant-available SSA-P, solvent modifications or additional extractants might be promising and should be subjected to further research.

Particle size distributions inside and around the artificial crater produced by the Hayabusa2 impact experiment on Ryugu

Japanese Hayabusa2 spacecraft has successfully carried out an impact experiment using a small carry-on impactor (SCI) on an asteroid (162173) Ryugu. We examine the size distribution of particles inside and outside an artificial impact crater (the SCI crater) based on the images taken by the optical navigation camera onboard the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. The circumferential variation in particle size distribution inside the SCI crater is recognized and we interpret that major circumferential variation is caused by the large boulders inside the SCI crater that existed prior to the impact. The size distribution inside the SCI crater also shows that the subsurface layer beneath the SCI impact site had a large number of particles with a characteristic size of – 9 cm, which is consistent with the previous evaluations. On the other hand, the size distribution outside the SCI crater exhibits the radial variation, implying that the deposition of ejecta from the SCI crater is involved. The slope of the size distribution outside the crater at small sizes differs from the slope of the size distribution on the surface of Ryugu by approximately 1 or slightly less. This is consistent with the claim that some particles are buried in fine particles of the subsurface origin included in ejecta from the SCI crater. Thus, the particle size distributions inside and outside the SCI crater reveal that the subsurface layer beneath the SCI impact site is rich in fine particles with – 9 cm in size while the particles on the surface have a size distribution of a power-law form with shallower slopes at small sizes due to the deposition of fine ejecta from the subsurface layer. Finally, we discuss a process responsible for this difference in particle size distribution between the surface and the subsurface layers. The occurrence of segregation in the gravitational flow of particles on the surface of Ryugu is plausible.Graphical

Dissolution and Growth Kinetics and the Rate-Controlling Step in Transformation of Amorphous to Crystalline Phase Using Antisolvent Crystallization

The kinetics of the formation of amorphous disodium guanosine 5′-monophosphate and its transformation to the heptahydrate phase were studied under various operating conditions using in situ Raman and focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM). Supersaturation, solvent composition, feed concentration, addition rate, and viscosity were shown to affect the rate-determining steps of the transformation. The rate-controlling mechanisms in the overall kinetics have been confirmed. The observation of the slurry viscosity of the suspension of the amorphous phase shows the option to observe the phase transformation. The transformation process was affected by the dissolution, growth, and supersaturation in which the rate-controlling step was divided into two sections, such as the initial and later sections of the transformation. The overall rate constants were determined by combining the constants of the dissolution rate and the growth rates of each section. In situ Raman spectroscopy examination of the concentration of solution and solids can determine the rate-limiting processes during the transformation. The zero-order, first-order, and surface reaction equations as kinetic equations are highlighted and compared for the dissolution of the amorphous solids and the growth of the heptahydrate crystals. The dissolution of the amorphous (metastable form) and the growth of the heptahydrate (stable form) were found to be best fitted to the zero-order kinetic model. In particular, the variation of particle size distribution over time can give the rate-determining steps. These results suggest that the data measured by Raman spectroscopy and FBRM can be successfully coupled into a dissolution and growth model to further grasp and interpret the phase transformation. A dissolution rate-controlling step was dominated by a pattern in which both supersaturation and amorphous dissolution decreased simultaneously, and the growth rate-controlling step was shown in a pattern in which either supersaturation or amorphous dissolution was constant. Furthermore, the growth of heptahydrate crystals at a viscosity of the suspension with the amorphous solids below 70 cp and the dissolution of the amorphous solids above it can be used as the key determinant. Using the method developed and the kinetic constants obtained in this work, it is possible to create an appropriate control strategy to produce the desired form in the final product.

Growth of complex volcanic ash aggregates in the Tierra Blanca Joven eruption of Ilopango Caldera, El Salvador

Aggregation processes control both the residence time and dispersal of volcanic ash during eruptions yet remain incompletely understood. The products of aggregation vary from simple ash clusters to large, complexly layered accretionary lapilli. Here we detail the micro-stratigraphy of a single population of accretionary lapilli that grew during the ∼431 CE Tierra Blanca Joven eruption from Ilopango Caldera, El Salvador. The accretionary lapilli were sampled 10 km from the caldera source within a sequence of ash-rich pyroclastic density current deposits and intercalated fall material, known as unit D, which is traceable >40 km from Ilopango. Scanning electron microscopy and image analysis reveal common facies that form distinct layers within the accretionary lapilli. Each facies is distinguished by quantitative and qualitative variations in particle size distribution, porosity, and particle fabric. We infer that these textures resulted from aggregation conditions that differed in terms of liquid water availability, particle concentration and grain size distributions. In our proposed model, a characteristic sequence of facies accreted from core to rim in the accretionary lapilli during passage through ash clouds generated by vent-derived plumes and pyroclastic density currents. The accretionary lapilli are mostly composed of smaller aggregates (ash clusters, ash pellets) and grew predominantly by accretion of already-formed aggregates, rather than by grain-by-grain accretion of individual particles. This finding is consistent with observations of rapid aggregate growth in volcanic plumes, suggesting a common evolutionary pathway for accretionary lapilli formation across diverse eruptions.

Eight-year variations in atmospheric radiocesium in Fukushima city

Abstract. After the Fukushima nuclear accident, atmospheric 134Cs and 137Cs measurements were taken in Fukushima city for 8 years, from March 2011 to March 2019. The airborne surface concentrations and deposition of radiocesium (radio-Cs) were high in winter and low in summer; these trends are the opposite of those observed in a contaminated forest area. The effective half-lives of 137Cs in the concentrations and deposition before 2015 (0.754 and 1.30 years, respectively) were significantly shorter than those after 2015 (2.07 and 4.69 years, respectively), which was likely because the dissolved radio-Cs was discharged from the local terrestrial ecosystems more rapidly than the particulate radio-Cs. In fact, the dissolved fractions of precipitation were larger than the particulate fractions before 2015, but the particulate fractions were larger after 2016. X-ray fluorescence analysis suggested that biotite may have played a key role in the environmental behavior of particulate forms of radio-Cs after 2014. However, the causal relationship between the seasonal variations in particle size distributions and the possible sources of particles is not yet fully understood. The current study also proposes an evaluation method of the consistency of a numerical model for radio-Cs resuspension and suggests that improvements to the model are necessary.
