Metabolic scaling variation as a constitutive adaptation to tide level in Mytilus galloprovincialis

Understanding how allometric exponents vary in the different biologically determined patterns turns out to be fundamental for the development of a unifying hypothesis that intends to explain most of the variation among taxa and physiological states. The aims of this study were (i) to analyze the scaling exponents of oxygen consumption at different metabolic rates in Mytilus galloprovincialis according to different seasons, habitat, and acclimation to laboratory conditions and (ii) to examine the variation in shell morphology depending on habitat or seasonal environmental hazards. The allometric exponent for standard metabolic rate (b value) did not vary across seasons or tide level, presenting a consistent value of 0.644. However, the mass-specific standard oxygen consumption (a value), i.e. metabolic level, was lower in intertidal mussels (subtidal mussels: a = - 1.364; intertidal mussels: a = - 1.634). The allometric exponent for routine metabolic rate changed significantly with tide level: lower allometric exponents for intertidal mussels (b = 0.673) than for subtidal mussels (b = 0.871). This differential response did not change for at least two months after the environmental cue was removed. We suggest that this is the result of intertidal mussels investing fundamentally in surface-dependent organs (gill and shell), with the exception of the slightly higher values obtained in May as a likely consequence of gonadal tissue development. Subtidal mussels, on the contrary, are probably in constant demand for volume-related resources, which makes them consistently obtain an allometric exponent of around 0.87.

The characterization of disruptive combustion of organic gellant-laden ethanol fuel droplets

The future of high-performance rocket propulsion systems depends on superior burn rates, shorter ignition delay times, and eco-friendly nature. Gelled fuel propellants are such candidates which are pivotal to achieving these performance parameters. Gel fuels are multi-component fuels, and their combustion behavior is different from conventional solid and liquid propellants. To develop a fundamental understanding of the vaporization and combustion of gel fuels, single droplet experiments in a pendant mode setup are performed for ethanol-based organic gel fuels by capturing high-speed video data. Primarily, two gel fuel combinations are taken for experiments. The gel fuels are non-metalized ethanol-based fuels containing organic gellants Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and methylcellulose (MC). Both fuels have shown three distinct combustion stages namely transient heat up (stage I), disruptive burning (stage II), and carbonization (stage III). The demarcation of the stages is done by visual evidence backed by high-fidelity high-speed video data. In stage I, phase separation occurs which leads to the formation of gellant shells. Organic gellants tend to form viscoelastic shells which significantly influence the jetting behavior during the disruptive burning (stage II). The combustion of gel droplets in stage II exhibits characteristic differences in bursting mechanism, for instance, oscillatory and transient bursting in HPMC and transient bursting in MC. Moreover, droplet-bursting behaviors influence jetting attributes and burn rates. Besides, the bursting of gel droplets during combustion is also dependent on the thickness of the gellant shells, the thin and weak shells are prone to bulk droplet motion due to active jetting, whereas the thick and rigid shells act as kinetic energy dampeners and thereby inhibit the bulk motion of droplets. Apart from disruptive burning, carbonization is a significant part of the combustion during which the suppressed jetting behavior is seen due to the traces of fuel trapped in the gellant shells. A significant rise in burn rate is observed due to jetting during the disruptive burning stage in contrast to the other two stages of combustion for both the gel fuels under study. Furthermore, combustion residue analysis is carried out to assess the variation in shell morphology across the stages. Overall, the current study provides detailed insights into the combustion characterization of organic gel fuels, which can help in fabricating gel fuel compositions.

Variation in shell morphology in the fossil freshwater gastropod Tanousia subovata (SETTEPASSI 1965) from the Mercure Basin (Middle Pleistocene, southern Italy): Distinct taxa or ecophenotypic variation? (Gastropoda Prosobranchia: Hydrobiidae)

The study of the shell plasticity of the extinct Hydrobiidae Tanousia subovata (settePassI 1965) resulted in a better understanding of the relationships between the shape of the organisms and the environment that influenced their life. Three populations, from distinct sections of the lacustrine Middle Pleistocene Mercure Basin (Basilicata-Calabria, southern Italy), have been investigated, using a landmark-based geometric morphometric analysis to quantify the morphological variability. Morphometric data and data coming from independent proxies (such as lithology and other fossils), already published on the studied basin, have been taken into account. Results have been interpreted to discriminate between internal and external factors influencing the shape of the shell. The geometric morphometric method proved useful to reveal some morphological variations between the three populations, which, following the comparisons with palaeoenvironmental data and with the literature appear to result from ecological or maybe chronological factors rather than indicating distinct species.

Molecular phylogeny of the snorkel snail Rhiostoma housei, a species complex from Thailand with descriptions of three new species

Snorkel snails (genus Rhiostoma) are widely distributed in Indo-China and on the Malay Peninsula. The shell morphology is traditionally used for species identification yet in Thailand, the common snorkel snail, Rhiostoma housei, shows considerable variation in shell morphology within and between populations. Therefore species identifications and delimitations are difficult. We used two mitochondrial DNA fragments (COI and 16S rRNA) and morphological characters to delimit species and infer phylogenetic relationships of Rhiostoma housei s.l. from eight localities in Thailand, representing potential cryptic species suggested by earlier allozyme and karyological data. Results revealed four distinct clades from different geographic areas in Thailand. Species delimitation analyses confirmed the clades as four separate species and a geometric morphometric analysis demonstrated subtle but consistent conchological differences between the four clades. The high COI sequence divergences among the four clades (mean: 14.8%; range: 10.3–16.5%) further supported the species level recognition. As a consequence, three new species are described from Thailand: R. khoratense, sp. nov., R. nakwangense, sp. nov. and R. phunangense, sp. nov. Stay in shape: Assessing the adaptive potential of shell morphology and its sensitivity to temperature in the invasive New Zealand mud snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum through phenotypic plasticity and natural selection in Europe.

Climate change may force organisms to adapt genetically or plastically to new environmental conditions. Invasive species show remarkable potential for rapid adaptation. The ovoviviparous New Zealand mud snail (NZMS), Potamopyrgus antipodarum, has successfully established across Europe with two clonally reproducing mitochondrial lineages since its arrival in the first half of the 19th century. Its remarkable variation in shell morphology was shown to be fitness relevant. We investigated the effects of temperature on shell morphology across 11 populations from Germany and the Iberian Peninsula in a common garden across three temperatures. We analyzed size and shape using geometric morphometrics. For both, we compared reaction norms and estimated heritabilities. For size, the interaction of temperature and haplotype explained about 50% of the total variance. We also observed more genotype by environment interactions indicating a higher degree of population differentiation than in shape. Across the three temperatures, size followed the expectations of the temperature‐size rule, with individuals growing larger in cold environments. Changes in shape may have compensated for changes in size affecting space for brooding embryos. Heritability estimates were relatively high. As indicated by the very low coefficients of variation for clonal repeatability (CV A ), they can probably not be compared in absolute terms. However, they showed some sensitivity to temperature, in haplotype t more so than in z, which was only found in Portugal. The low CV A values indicate that genetic variation among European populations is still restricted with a low potential to react to selection. A considerable fraction of the genetic variation was due to differences between the clonal lineages. The NZMS has apparently not been long enough in Europe to accumulate significant genetic variation relevant for morphological adaptation. As temperature is obviously not the sole factor influencing shell morphology, their interaction will probably not be a factor limiting population persistence under a warming climate in Europe.

Complete mitochondrial genome sequence of a brackish water clam Corbicula japonica (Cyrenidae: Bivalvia) collected from an estuary of Gwangyang Bay in Korea

The complete mitochondrial genome of the clam Corbicula japonica is 17,432 bp in length. The sequence consists of 13 protein-coding, 2 ribosomal RNAs, and 22 transfer RNA genes (GenBank accession no. MZ895053). The proportion of base-pairs in C. japonica are A + T (70.5%) and G + C (29.5%). Phylogenetic analysis reveal C. japonica to be sister species to C. fluminea within the monophyletic genus Corbicula, with high support. This study is helpful to the classification of the brackish water clam C. japonica, which is difficult to identify during early development owing to variation of shell morphology.

Arboreal snail genus Amphidromus Albers, 1850 of Southeast Asia: Shell polymorphism of Amphidromus cruentatus (Morelet, 1875) revealed by phylogenetic and morphometric analyses.

Species of colourful arboreal snails of the genus Amphidromus from Southeast Asia commonly exhibit high intraspecific variation in shell morphology. Although highly polymorphic Amphidromus specimens with different colouration have been collected at the same locality and were revealed to possess similar genital organs, there is yet no morphometric or DNA analyses of these different shell morphs. This study is the first to reveal that both striped and stripeless morphs of A. cruentatus from Laos and Vietnam belong to the same mitochondrial (COI and 16S rRNA) lineage. Although the shell colouration between the striped and stripeless morphs is markedly different, morphometric and shell outline-based analyses indicated an overall similarity in shell shape. We also revised the systematics of A. cruentatus, in which we treated similar related species, namely A. eudeli, A. fuscolabris, A. thakhekensis, A. gerberi bolovenensis, A. goldbergi, A. pengzhuoani, A. eichhorsti and A. pankowskiae as junior synonyms of A. cruentatus. Amphidromus daoae, A. anhdaoorum, A. stungtrengensis, A. yangbayensis and A. yenlinhae, which were formerly regarded as junior synonyms, are considered as species different from A. cruentatus based on shell morphology and morphometric analyses. Preliminary phylogenetic analyses also retrieved some Amphidromus species groups as distinct mitochondrial lineages.

Molecular phylogeny of Nipponacmea (Patellogastropoda, Lottiidae) from Japan: a re-evaluation of species taxonomy and morphological diagnosis.

The patellogastropod limpet genus Nipponacmea is widely distributed in Japan and adjacent East Asia. Species identification within Nipponacmea is challenging due to the high variation in shell morphology. In this study, we examined the taxonomy of this genus represented by nine nominal species from 43 localities (including type localities). Results of the molecular phylogenetic analysis revealed that: (1) N.gloriosa, the sole species in this genus inhabiting the subtidal zone, represents the most basal independent branch; (2) the remaining species are divided into two large clades with lower- and higher-apex shell profiles; and (3) the high-apex morphology was derived from the low-apex type. The terminal clades defined using the molecular data were consistent with nine morphospecies and had 100% bootstrap values, strongly supporting the conventional taxonomy of Nipponacmea. Although morphological similarities do not always reflect phylogeny, the set of morphological characters used in the current taxonomy were proven to be adequate for diagnosis. In conclusion, this study provided solid evidence to uphold the monophyly of known species of Nipponacmea in Japan and demonstrated the usefulness of morphological characters for species diagnosis.

Two new pseudocryptic species in the medium-sized common European land snails, Fruticicola Held, 1838; as a result of phylogeographic analysis of Fruticicola fruticum (O. F. Müller, 1774) (Gastropoda: Helicoidea: Camaenidae)

Fruticicola fruticum (O. F. Müller, 1774), a medium-sized helicoid snail in the Camaenidae, has a wide range in Europe, reaching from the Urals and the Caucasus to the Balkans, and from the southern part of Scandinavia, through Central Europe to eastern and central France and northern Italy. There are numerous studies on its distribution, biology, life cycle, etc., but little is known about the genetic diversity of this taxon. Here, we studied the phylogeny and phylogeography of F. fruticum using two mitochondrial markers: cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S ribosomal RNA (16S); and four nuclear markers: 18S ribosomal RNA (18S), 28S ribosomal RNA (28S), internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2), and histone 3 (H3). The study was based on 59 populations sampled across the range. Whereas nuclear markers showed little differentiation, phylogenetic analysis of COI sequences clearly confirmed the distinctness of the European Fruticicola and Asian Bradybaena (p-distance 0.229). Within Fruticicola 54 haplotypes were detected, haplotype diversity (Hd) = 0.973 ± 0.006, nucleotide diversity (π) = 0.137 ± 0.005. ABGD and PTP delimitation analyzes distinguished eight mOTUs. Two sequences (our mOTU C) from Russia were published in the GenBank as two distinct species: F. schrenckii and F. transbaicalia. Seven further mOTUs identified in our study formed three distinct lineages, regarded as species. The first (mOTU A and mOTU B), represented by 40 populations, occupies a wide range across northern and central Europe, extending east to Ukraine and south to northern Croatia (mOTU B). It encompasses the type locality of F. fruticum, and can be recognized as F. fruticum sensu stricto. Another lineage (mOTU D and mOTU E), represented by six populations in central Romania, appears to form another species. Both mOTUs were found together in one population. A third lineage, containing mOTUs F, G and H, represented by 14 populations, was distributed across the Balkans from N.E. Croatia to Bulgaria. p-distances between the three species ranged from 0.172 to 0.219, and between all the mOTUs, pooled together, from 0.172 to 0.258. The highest genetic diversity was found in species 3 (0.112) and the lowest in species 1 (0.025), despite its largest geographic distribution. Pairwise p-distances, Tamura 3-parameter distances, composite likelihood distances, as well as the coancestry coefficient FST, calculated for all populations pooled together were significantly associated with geographic distance, but this was not the case within each of these three species. The significant association for all populations reflected high diversity between the species coupled with high geographic distances between their populations, not the character of intraspecies diversity. With a few exceptions, there hold a rather infinite island model with low migration. AMOVA detected 78% of the variance between the three species, 18% among populations within the species, and only 3.6% within the populations. The low genetic diversity of widespread F. fruticum s. stricto, compared with much higher diversity of two narrowly distributed newly found species of Fruticicola, may reflect the rapid spread of the former into previously uninhabitable regions, while the latter were able to maintain populations in glacial refugia. The estimated time of divergence between the three species, 1.7–2.19 mya, suggests their ancestors’ isolation in southern European refugia during the lower Pleistocene, the Gelasian/Calabrian. There was no clear association of variation in shell morphology and lineage or mOTU identity; on external characters, these species are semicryptic, subtle differences in reproductive anatomy among them were found.

Context The New Zealand mudsnail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, has invaded numerous countries around the world, including Chile. Aim We aimed to determine variation in shell morphology and fecundity in 12 populations scattered in six hydrological basins in this country. Methods Populations were compared using shell morphometry, principal-component analysis (PCA), and brood size. Independent linear mixed models (LMM) were applied to study spatially correlated data. Results The morphometric analysis showed significant differences in shell variables, whereas the PCA showed a high degree of overlap of specimens as well as separation of populations in the morphometric space. Brood size differed significantly among populations, ranging from 0 to 63 offspring. Altitude and shell length had an effect on brood size, whereas shell length showed variation among basins. Latitude did not have a direct effect on any of the two variables. Conclusions Potamopyrgus antipodarum exhibits great morphological and life-history trait variation, which could be favouring its rapid expansion in Chile. The lack of genetic variation of this species, previously reported in the country, suggests that differences found in our study are likely to be due to environmental variation. Implications Further studies should be addressed to assess the origin of the variance.

Ecophenotypic plasticity in shell growth direction of asari clamRuditapes philippinarum

AbstractAsari clam (or Manila clam)Ruditapes philippinarumis an important bivalve for local fisheries. This species exhibits a large variation in shell morphology, and the shell roundness tends to be greater in more unsuitable habitats. To test whether the increments in shell size parameters (length, height and width) were affected solely by environmental conditions or by internal factors such as initial shell shapes or growth rate, a field caging experiment was conducted at two different sites of unsuitable and suitable habitats in Matsukawaura Lagoon, Japan, where shell shapes of wild clams were significantly different between the habitats. In the experiment, clams were released from the two sites to the same site or to the other site and were re-collected after 3, 6 and 12 months of caging. Caged clams originating from unsuitable habitats and released to suitable habitats showed a reduction in shell height relative to shell length, while clams from suitable habitats introduced to unsuitable habitats showed marked increases in both shell height and width. Generalized linear mixed models suggested that the increase in shell height was affected largely by the release habitat (environment) whereas the increase in shell width was affected largely by the individual growth rate. These results suggest that marginal growths in shell height and width respond differently to external and internal factors of clams, resulting in plasticity in their shell shapes according to the environments to which they are translocated.

Spatial distribution and morphometry of the succineid snail Succinea baconi (Pfeiffer, 1854) in India

The spatial distribution and morphological features of the land snail Succinea baconi (Pfeiffer, 1854) (Gastropoda: Succineidae) from India were evaluated. The survey performed in gardens and bushes in Coochbehar, West Bengal, India, has made it possible to assess the abundance of the snail S. baconi on the randomly selected lemon plants (n = 18). Logistic regressions were employed to judge differences in vertical distribution, resource association and size class variation in the snails under study. Variation in shell morphology was assessed by performing the regression analysis of the sampled shells of live snails (n = 258) and vacant shells of the deceased individuals (n = 100). An overall significant difference (p < 0.05) in the vertical distribution of snails in lemon plants was observed. As to their association with resources available, snails were found to be more abundant in detritus than on living parts of the plants. The performed logistic regression revealed that the relative abundance of different S. baconi size classes was significantly different (p < 0.001). Significant correlations (p < 0.001) were found among different body size variables, with the shell length (x)-body weight (y) relationship being: y = 0.232x2.524 (for live snails) and the shell length (x)-shell weight (y) relationship being: y = 0.358x2.537 (for shells of dead snails). Various parameters of the snail shell shape could be represented through regression equations. Although reproduction and growth strategies of snails need to be explored further, the presented observations improve our understanding of the ecology of S. baconi, which may prove useful for future conservation efforts.

Variation in shell morphology of the European pond turtle,Emys orbicularis, in fragmented central European populations

AbstractThe European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) is a widely distributed freshwater species inhabiting much of Europe, but it is often in population decrease or is locally extinct. In this study, we sampled five central European populations, of which four were autochthonous and one was introduced outside the native range. Moreover, two of the native populations were relatively isolated and at the periphery of the species, range. Using the frequency of shell anomalies, a geometric morphometric framework and an analysis of fluctuating asymmetry, we aimed to determine the degree of morphological differentiation among different populations. Significantly, a smaller number of individuals with a malformed shell or scutes occurred in the native core range population, which potentially has a high level of gene flow (Hungary). Although neither canonical variate analysis nor the morphological disparity analysis showed distinct differences between populations, we found significantly higher shell asymmetry in the two marginal populations (Austria and Slovakia) compared with the core range populations. Our results might thus support the central–marginal hypothesis and indicate potential genetically based conservation problems owing to demographic bottlenecks and/or isolation in marginal populations.

Lessons from Timor: Shells are poor taxonomic indicators in Asperitas land snails (Stylommatophora, Dyakiidae)

AbstractThe limacoid land snail Asperitas Gude, 1911 encompasses several vividly coloured, yet poorly known species that are distributed throughout the Lesser Sunda Islands, Sulawesi, and the Moluccas. We examined the variation in shell morphology, including the use of geometric morphometrics, and reproductive anatomy of snails from Timor and several adjacent islands. These studies revealed that none of the taxa described from Timor and considered to be endemic to this island could be reliably distinguished from any of the others. In addition to the systematic ambiguity of morphological characteristics, we uncovered rather low amounts of genetic differentiation in the mitochondrial marker cytochrome c oxidase subunit I that was not consistent with the current taxonomy. Based on these observations, we conclude that there is just a single Asperitas species on Timor that exhibits notable variability in shell characters and body colour. This variability is ascribed to the combined effects of polymorphic colour patterns with locally varying selection in different habitats and along altitudinal gradients. Individuals from the adjacent islands of Flores, Sumbawa, Solor and Romang, which are deemed to represent distinct species‐level taxa, exhibit similar amounts of variation in shell and body colour. They exhibit a consistent reproductive anatomy and overall negligible amounts of mitochondrial differentiation from the populations on Timor. Patterns in shell variation do not lend support to previously held ideas that different Sunda Islands harbour distinct radiations of polytypic Asperitas species. By contrast, we suggest that the taxonomic diversity of Asperitas has been overestimated for the over‐reliance on shell features and that many presently accepted taxa are likely mere synonyms of fewer and more widespread species.

Species density and shell morphology of gold ring cowry (Monetaria annulus, Linnaeus, 1758) (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Cypraeidae) in the coastal waters of Ambon Island, Indonesia

Species density and shell morphology of gold ring cowry (Monetaria annulus, Linnaeus, 1758) (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Cypraeidae) in the coastal waters of Ambon Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1391-1400. The purpose of this research was to examine environmental factors, species density, and the shell morphology of Monetaria annulus. The samples were collected by using the line transect method at 6 research stations. The data of the environmental factors (temperature, salinity, and pH of seawater) as well as species density of M. annulus were collected with in-situ technique, while the shell morphology of M. annulus was measured at Laboratory of the Deep-Sea Research Center, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Ambon. The results of the measurements of the environmental factors in the coastal waters of Ambon Island showed some fluctuations in the measurement values. The seawater temperature ranged between 29.78-30.05 ºC, the salinity of seawater ranged from 32.12-32.33‰, and the pH of the seawater ranged from 8.34-8.49. The density of M. annulus at the research stations from the highest to the lowest was at Tanjung Tiram station, Suli station, Seri station, Hutumuri station, Halong station, and Latuhalat station (0.27 > 0.24 > 0.23 > 0.19 > 0.14 > 0.12 ind/m2). The results of the measurement of the shell morphology showed many variations in the size and shape of the shell of M. annulus with a total number (N) of 294 individuals. The length, the width, and the height of the shell, the length of the blotches, the width of the blotches, and the total weight of M. annulus from each research station were significantly different (p<0.005). These results indicate that the differences in the shell morphology of M. annulus at each research station were influenced by waves, the strength of the currents sea waves, and the different substrate of water. In addition, the variation of shell morphology can be a reason for characterization in the taxonomy of the Cypraeidae family.

Resolving species boundaries in the Atlanta brunnea species group (Gastropoda, Pterotracheoidea).

Atlantid heteropods are a family of holoplanktonic marine gastropods that occur primarily in tropical and subtropical latitudes. Atlantids bear a delicate aragonitic shell (<14 mm) and live in the upper ocean, where ocean acidification and ocean warming have a pronounced effect. Therefore, atlantids are likely to be sensitive to these ocean changes. However, we lack sufficiently detailed information on atlantid taxonomy and biogeography, which is needed to gain a deeper understanding of the consequences of a changing ocean. To date, atlantid taxonomy has mainly relied on morphometrics and shell ornamentation, but recent molecular work has highlighted hidden diversity. This study uses an integrated approach in a global analysis of biogeography, variation in shell morphology and molecular phylogenies based on three genes (CO1, 28S and 18S) to resolve the species boundaries within the Atlanta brunnea group. Results identify a new species, Atlanta vanderspoeli, from the Equatorial and South Pacific Ocean, and suggest that individuals of A. brunnea living in the Atlantic Ocean are an incipient species. Our results provide an important advance in atlantid taxonomy and will enable identification of these species in future studies of living and fossil plankton.

Morphological variation in genetically divergent populations of the common whelk, Buccinum undatum (Gastropoda: Buccinidae), across the North Atlantic

Abstract The variation in shelled marine gastropod morphology across small spatial scales can reflect restricted population connectivity, resulting in evolution or plastic responses to environmental heterogeneity. The common whelk, Buccinum undatum, is a subtidal gastropod, ubiquitous in the North Atlantic, that exhibits considerable spatial variation in shell morphology and colour. Given that species delimitation in shelled marine gastropods is often based on shell characteristics, such morphological variation can lead to taxonomic confusion. Phylogeographical analysis based on mitochondrial DNA and microsatellites suggested cryptic species composed of Western and Eastern North Atlantic common whelk populations, the separation of which dates to the onset of the Pleistocene glaciation ~2.1 Mya. Divergence within the Eastern North Atlantic is more recent and characterized by isolation by distance. In the present study, phenotypic variation in shell morphology across the North Atlantic range is analysed and compared with molecular divergence. The morphological variation of B. undatum populations reflected the pattern observed for the molecular markers only for certain comparisons of populations and might, in other cases, reflect larger constraints on the morphological variation and, possibly, the impact of environmental influences.

Integrative taxonomy reveals phenotypic plasticity in the freshwater mussel Contradens contradens (Bivalvia: Unionidae) in Thailand, with a description of a new species

The freshwater mussel Contradens contradens (Lea, 1838) occurs in most types of freshwater habitats throughout Thailand. The species shows extensive variation in shell morphology, which has led to the recognition of six different subspecies. In this study, the validity of these six subspecies plus one unknown species was assessed using an integrative taxonomic approach. Geometric morphometric analyses revealed significant differences in shell shapes among these six nominal morphological subspecies, although a considerable degree of overlap was detected in some groups. In contrast, the phylogenetic tree obtained from the concatenated data of mitochondrial COI and nuclear H3 gene sequences and molecular species delimitation analyses revealed only three supported clades. These clades are proposed herein as three distinct species, and strongly corresponded to the biogeographically disjunct drainage systems in Thailand. They consisted of the (i) C. contradens clade found in the Chao Phraya Basin and other rivers that drain into the Gulf of Thailand, (ii) C. crossei clade that is restricted to the Middle Mekong Basin, and (iii) a clade containing only the newly discovered species from Huai Luang River in the north-east of Thailand, which is described herein as Contradens rolfbrandti Jeratthitikul & Panha, sp. nov. Speciation among these congeners was probably caused by the restriction of gene flow due to the past geomorphology of the river systems. Shell morphology of marine gastropod Cerithium caeruleum is influenced by variation in environmental condition across the northern Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman

The variation in shell morphology of four populations of marine gastropod Cerithium caeruleum G.B. Sowerby II, 1855 was investigated in relations to environmental conditions across the northern Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Geometric morphometrics was used to quantify the shape of gastropod shells. The results showed that C. caeruleum shell shape and size vary significantly among locations. A Canonical Variate Analysis (CVA) showed the existence of two clusters of populations based on shell shape so that the cluster of the Persian Gulf populations were distinct from those of Gulf of Oman. The shell width was significantly correlated with variation in water and air temperature. The results suggest that shell shape differences in C. caeruleum populations are due to a plastic response to environmental conditions.

A revision of the genus Littorina (Mollusca: Gastropoda) in Korea

ABSTRACTLittorina Férussac, 1822 is an abundant genus of small gastropods found in the upper littoral zone of rocky seashores worldwide. Although ecologically important, shell-based species identification in this genus is challenging due to phenotypic variation in shell morphology and lack of diagnostic characters among morphologically similar species. In this study, we revised the taxonomy of Korean Littorina species using morphological characters (shell and radula) and cox1 mitochondrial DNA sequences for three Korean species: L. brevicula, L. sitkana, and L. horikawai. Results suggest that L. sitkana was erroneously reported as L. kasatka in a previous study. A new record for Littorina horikawai (Matsubayashi & Habe in Habe, 1979), previously unknown from Korea, is described, which can be distinguished from L. sitkana by the presence of alternating white and brown spiral ribs on each whorl. Comparison of the mtDNA cox1 gene sequences shows very low intraspecific variation even between geographically distant populations. A phylogenetic tree supports a close relationship between L. horikawai and L. sitkana, consistent with earlier phylogenetic studies.
