This study aims to test whether the Quality of Laundry Service affects Patient Satisfaction in RSUD Kab. Kediri. This study used a quantitative descriptive approach with a causal research design applied to determine the cause-and-effect relationship between the independent variable (Laundry Service Quality) and the dependent variable (Patient Satisfaction). The study population consisted of 224 non-medical employees of Kediri District Hospital. Non-probability sampling techniques with purposive sampling types are used to determine samples based on certain criteria. Using the Slovin formula and the 5% error standard, a sample of 34 employees was obtained. Data were collected using the Likert scale and analyzed to test hypotheses. The results showed that the calculated value for the Laundry Service Quality variable was 7.970, which was greater than the ttable of 2.037, with a significant value of 0.000 which was smaller than 0.050. This shows that the Quality of Laundry Service has a significant effect on Patient Satisfaction, so the hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The regression coefficient value of 0.563 indicates that an increase of one unit in Laundry Service Quality will increase Patient Satisfaction by 0.563 units, while a decrease of one unit in Laundry Service Quality will decrease Patient Satisfaction by 0.968 units. An R² value of 0.665 indicates that 66.5% of the variation in Patient Satisfaction is explained by Laundry Service Quality, while the remaining 33.5% is influenced by other variables not studied in this study.

Analytical study to assess the impact of health service quality on patient satisfaction in Hamad Medical Corporation Hospitals in Qatar: using SERVQUAL

Abstract Objective The study aims to assess the impact of the five dimensions of service quality on patient satisfaction and determine which dimension has the greatest impact on patient satisfaction. We can judge service quality through the delivery of excellent services concerning patients’ expectations. Consequently, we can define it as the difference between the patient’s expectations and experiences (patient views, subjectively). Methods A total of 400 patients were randomly selected in this study. This study was conducted in Hamad Medical Corporation Hospital, Qatar, in the first half of 2019. We utilized the cross-sectional method using a modified Assessment of Service Quality Questionnaire. The response was recorded on a 5-point Likert scale, wherein ‘one’ indicates ‘strongly disagree’ and ‘five’ indicates ‘strongly agree.’ In addition to these items, global satisfaction was measured by a single item asking participants how they felt after the delivery of health services. Results Univariable and multivariable linear regressions were made to test the predefined hypotheses. The study findings showed a statistically significant impact of health service quality on patient satisfaction (P = 0.00). The Standardized Beta proved that the empathy dimension had the greatest impact on patient satisfaction, while assurance had the lowest (β = 0.23 and 0.05, respectively). Also, socio-demographic data have a significant impact on patient satisfaction. The study sample showed that 81% were single, 55.5% were males, and 79.8% were non-Qatari. All hospitals have significant values (P < 0.05). There is variation in patient satisfaction between the newly opened hospitals and the old ones. Conclusion Hospital management and policymakers must improve and maintain patient confidentiality, encouraging staff to build confidence and trust in the patient. The management must consider contemporary managerial orientation’s crucial role in delivering quality services and patient satisfaction.

Relationship between Illness Perception and Perceived Social Support and Satisfaction with Nursing Care Quality among Patients with Coronary Heart Disease in Jordan

Background: Research has shown that illness perception, perceived social support, and patient satisfaction play a crucial role in the etiology and progression of disease and general health outcome but no previous study correlated the illness perception and perceived social support to patient satisfaction of nursing care. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between illness perception and perceived social support, patient satisfaction with quality of nursing care among coronary heart disease patients in Jordan. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational design was used. A convenience sample of 275 patients with coronary heart disease was recruited from inpatient cardiac units in a university-affiliated hospital in Northern Jordan. Results: The overall means of illness perception and perceived social support were at a moderate level (44.04 (SD = 11.52), and 56.91 (SD = 19.91), respectively). The study revealed good to very good patient satisfaction with nursing care (3.44/5 (SD =.74)). Patient satisfaction was negatively correlated with illness perception and positively correlated with perceived social support. Illness perception was negatively correlated with perceived social support. Furthermore, the results from multiple linear regression analyses revealed that personal and health-related characteristics, illness perception, and perceived social support account for 64% of the variance in Patient Satisfaction with Nursing Care Quality (p-value < .05). Conclusion: The present study suggested that perceived social support is a significant predictor of patient satisfaction with nursing care. To improve patient outcomes, nurses should continuously assess the level of illness perception, social support, and satisfaction with nursing care quality for patients with coronary heart disease and offer an intervention based on these perceptions.

The Impact of Personality Traits on Patient Satisfaction after Telerehabilitation: A Comparative Study of Remote and Face-to-Face Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation during COVID-19 Lockdown.

This study aimed to evaluate the differences in patient satisfaction between telerehabilitation and traditional face-to-face rehabilitation and to identify the impact of personality traits on patient satisfaction with the remote form of rehabilitation. Eighty participants with musculoskeletal pain were recruited for the study. The telerehabilitation group (n = 40) completed a single remote session of rehabilitation, whereas the traditional rehabilitation group (n = 40) completed a single face-to-face session. After therapy, each participant was asked to complete a tailored satisfaction survey using Google Forms. The Health Care Satisfaction Questionnaire (HCSQ) and the International Personality Item Pool-Big Five Markers-20 (IPIP-BFM-20) were used as outcome measures. Considering the results of patient satisfaction with healthcare service, there were no statistically significant differences between telerehabilitation and traditional rehabilitation groups in the total HCSQ score and its subscales. For the complete HCSQ, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and extraversion were essential predictor variables, accounting for 51% of the variance in patient satisfaction. In conclusion, there were no differences in patient satisfaction between telerehabilitation and traditional rehabilitation groups. In the telerehabilitation group, higher agreeableness levels and lower conscientiousness and extraversion level could predict patients' satisfaction with telerehabilitation.

Nursing Telemedicine Educational Encounters: Improved Patient Satisfaction in Radiation Therapy Clinics.

Nurse-led education can improve patient satisfaction, and telemedicine has increased patient access during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this article was to investigate how nursing telemedicine educational visits influence patient satisfaction. Patients receiving standard of care in-person education for breast cancer radiation therapy (RT) between January 2019 and June 2019 comprised the preintervention cohort. After July 2019, patients received the same information virtually and represented the postintervention cohort. Press Ganey surveys were used to evaluate patient satisfaction, t tests were performed to differentiate satisfaction scores, and f tests were calculated to determine differences in the variances of response. Patient satisfaction increased in the postintervention cohort for what to expect during RT, how to manage side effects, and nurses' attentiveness to patient questions and worries. There was decreased variance in patient satisfaction in the postintervention group for quality of care received from nurses and caring manner of nurses.

FACTORS INFLUENCING PATIENTS’ SATISFACTION WITH HEALTHCARE SERVICES – A CASE STUDY OF PUBLIC HOSPITALS IN HUE CITY

The healthcare sector is becoming more competitive in Vietnam since patients now expect a higher level of service quality. This paper aims to investigate the impact of service quality dimensions on patient satisfaction in selected public hospitals in Hue city - the central region of Vietnam. Data were collected from 354 patients using a structured questionnaire. The second-generation analytical method (SmartPLS) was utilized to identify factors influencing the satisfaction of patients. The results of this study show that all five factors of healthcare service: hospital assurance; responsiveness; empathy; reliability and facilities were the significant predictors of patient satisfaction and these factors can explain 61.9 percent of the variance in patient satisfaction. Among these factors, hospital facilities and empathy were the most important predictors. The implication is that to keep patients satisfied with the hospital services, the public hospitals should invest more in equipment and improve the interaction process between patients and staff.

Rural\u2013urban disparities in patient satisfaction with oral health care: a provincial survey

BackgroundIdentifying spatial variation in patient satisfaction is essential to improve the quality of care. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate rural–urban disparities in patient satisfaction and to determine the factors that could influence satisfaction with oral health care.MethodsData from 1788 parents/caregivers of children who participated in the Quebec Ministry of Health clinical study were subject to secondary analysis. The Perneger model of patient satisfaction was used as the conceptual framework for the study. Satisfaction with oral health care was measured using the WHO-sponsored International Collaborative Study of Oral Health Outcomes (ICS-II). Explanatory variables included predisposing factors and enabling resources. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, as well as bivariate and linear regression models.ResultsIndividuals with higher income, dental insurance coverage, having a family dentist, reporting ease in finding a dentist, and having access to a private dental clinic were more satisfied with oral health care (p < 0.001). There were statistically significant differences between rural and urban Quebec residents in their ratings of patient satisfaction on four items, including dental office location (p = 0.013), dental equipment (p = 0.016), cost of dental treatment (p < 0.001), and cleanliness of dental office (p = 0.004), with greater satisfaction for urban dwellers. The multiple linear regression model showed that major determinants of patient satisfaction were being born in Canada, income ≥ 40,000$ CAD, having a family dentist, and having visited the dentist in the last year for regular checkups. However, ethnicity, having difficulty finding a dentist, and being in need of dental treatment negatively influenced patient satisfaction with oral health care.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that Quebec rural–urban disparity exists in patient satisfaction with care and that determinants of health influence this outcome. Intensive and powerful knowledge dissemination activities are needed to mobilize policymakers in implementing public health strategies to reduce this disparity.

Patient satisfaction and its socio-demographic correlates in a tertiary public hospital in Nepal: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundPatient satisfaction is one proxy indicator of the health care quality; however, enhancing patient satisfaction in low-income settings is very challenging due to the inadequacy of resources as well as low health literacy among patients. In this study, we assess patient satisfaction and its correlates in a tertiary public hospital in Nepal.MethodsWe conducted a cross sectional study at outpatient department of Bhaktapur Hospital of Nepal. To recruit participants for the study, we applied a systematic random sampling method. Our study used a validated Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire III (PSQ-III) developed by RAND Corporation including various contextual socio-demographic characteristics. We calculated mean score and percentages of satisfaction across seven dimensions of patient satisfaction. To determine the association between various dimensions of patient satisfaction and socio-demographic characteristics of the patient, we used a multi-ordinal logistic regression.ResultsAmong 204 patients, we observed a wide variation in patient satisfaction across seven dimensions. About 39% of patients were satisfied in the dimension of general satisfaction, 92% in interpersonal manner, and 45% in accessibility and convenience. Sociodemographic factors such as age (AOR: 6.42; CI: 1.30–35.05), gender (AOR: 2.81; CI: 1.41–5.74), and ethnicity (AOR: 0.26; CI: 0.08–0.77) were associated with general satisfaction of the patients. Other sociodemographic variables such as education, occupation, and religion were associated with a majority of the dimensions of patient satisfaction (p < 0.05). Age was found to be the strongest predictor of patient satisfaction in five out of seven dimensions.ConclusionsWe concluded that patient satisfaction varies across different dimensions. Therefore, targeted interventions that direct to improve the dimensions of patient satisfaction where the proportion of satisfaction is low are needed. Similar studies should be conducted regularly at different levels of health facilities across the country to capture a wider picture of patient satisfaction at various levels.

Effect of effective patient communication and customer orientation on service quality leading to patient satisfaction: a study of multi-specialty hospitals of North India

Patient satisfaction has remained a cardinal indicator for the measurement of healthcare quality for a long time. It may be considered as a proxy but it is a dominant indicator to measure success of a hospital. As the hospital services are critical in nature and deal with the life and health of patients, effective and quality communication in a perceptive and convincing manner leads to patient satisfaction. Effective communication in hospitals results in patient compliance and better quality of services. The model tries to find out the impact of effective patient communication and customer orientation on service quality and effect of service quality on patient satisfaction. The structural model has been tested with the help of structural equation modelling using partial least square method, on a sample size of 500 patients from selected multi-specialty hospitals of North India. The findings of the study imply that effective patient communication and customer-oriented behaviour significantly impacts the service quality in multi-specialty hospitals which explains substantial variance in patient satisfaction.

The influence of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms on patient satisfaction after sleeve gastrectomy

BackgroundSleeve gastrectomy has become the most common procedure performed for weight loss. But emerging data indicate that this procedure can result in lifestyle-limiting gastroesophageal reflux disease. The influence of these gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms on patient satisfaction with the procedure has not been explored. MethodsUsing a statewide, bariatric-specific data registry, we studied 6,608 patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy from 2013 to 2017. We used the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Health-Related Quality of Life questionnaire, which is 10 questions, each ranging from 0 (no symptoms) to 5 (severe symptoms). To assess the impact of sleeve gastrectomy on patient satisfaction, we calculated the change in this score at baseline versus 1 year after the procedure. We stratified the change in the gastroesophageal reflux disease score into 5 even-sized groups (quintiles). We then examined the relationship between change in the gastroesophageal reflux disease score and patient satisfaction at 1 year. We used generalized linear mixed models to assess the variation in patient satisfaction explained by the change in the gastroesophageal reflux disease score, excess body weight loss at 1 year, and other patient outcomes (serious complications, readmission, and reoperations). We controlled for patient factors (age, sex, race, and comorbidities) and year of sleeve gastrectomy. ResultsThe average change in the gastroesophageal reflux disease score was 1.62 (range: –48 to 48); however, the change in the gastroesophageal reflux disease score varied across quintiles with a –7.3-point (range: –48 to –3) worsening in the bottom quintile versus a 2.6-point (range: 7 to 48) improvement in the top quintile. Overall, 77.7% of patients were satisfied, but the proportion of patients satisfied was highly dependent on whether their reflux symptoms improved or worsened. Only 48.9% in the bottom quintile were satisfied, compared with 78.1% in the top quintile (<.0001). In the multivariate model, changes in patient-reported gastroesophageal reflux disease score were the most predictive of patient satisfaction, explaining 10.1% of the variation in 1 year satisfaction. Among patients in the bottom quintile, reflux symptoms explained 30.2% of variation compared with 2.3% in quintiles with little change or improvement in reflux. Moreover, excess body weight loss explained only 2% of variation in satisfaction and <1% was explained by patient outcomes (serious complications, readmissions, reoperations, or surgical complications). ConclusionIn this statewide study of sleeve gastrectomy, we demonstrated that gastroesophageal reflux symptoms are an important determinant of 1 year satisfaction, particularly among patients whose symptoms worsened the most.

The Dimension of the Press Ganey Survey Most Important in Evaluating Patient Satisfaction in the Academic Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery Setting.

Many studies have examined modifiable and nonmodifiable patient factors influencing patient satisfaction scores. The objective of this study was to evaluate which of the 6 domains making up the Press Ganey Survey had a greater magnitude of relative importance in the expected relationship with patient satisfaction in outpatient orthopedic surgery encounters. Press Ganey Survey satisfaction scores from 4737 clinical encounters from adult reconstructive surgery, sports medicine, hand, foot and ankle, trauma, and general orthopedic clinics at a single academic center from November 2010 to May 2017 were reviewed. Multiple patient factors, modifiable and nonmodifiable, were recorded. The Press Ganey Survey was divided into 6 domains to evaluate the relative importance of each to total patient satisfaction. The standardized parameter estimates from the multiple linear regression revealed that of the 6 domains making up the Press Ganey Survey, care provider had the greatest magnitude of relative importance in the expected relationship with total patient satisfaction (ß=0.53972). Approximately 80% of the variance in total patient satisfaction was accounted for by the care provider. The relative importance of the remaining 5 domains was as follows: access (ß=0.23483), personal issues (ß=0.16796), moving through the visit (ß=0.16795), nurse/assistant (ß=0.10010), and special services/valet (ß=0.06302). A principal components analysis suggested a 6-factor solution for the Press Ganey total satisfaction scale; care provider was the most dominant factor, and valet parking services was the least. The care provider had the most influence on the patient's overall satisfaction. Altogether, access, personal issues, moving through the visit, nurse/assistant, and special services/valet accounted for only approximately 20% of the total variance in patient satisfaction. This knowledge can be used by providers in the current health care climate, where patient consumerism is developing into the driver of care. This could allow resources to be focused on areas of influence, yielding a greater impact on patient satisfaction scores. [Orthopedics. 2019; 42(4):198-204.].

Measuring the Influence of Service Quality on Patient Satisfaction in Malaysia

The healthcare industry is increasingly becoming more competitive, with patients now demanding a higher level of service quality. This study aims to model the impact of service quality (medical care procedures, administrative practices, hospital image, trustworthiness, patient safety, infrastructure, personnel quality, and social responsibility) on patient satisfaction. Using a structured questionnaire, data were gathered from 194 patients from public and private hospitals in Melaka and Johor. The data were analyzed using a second-generation analytical software, SmartPLS. The results suggest the model can explain 58 percent of the variance in patient satisfaction. Hospital image, patient safety, personnel quality, and social responsibility were the significant predictors of patient satisfaction. Personnel quality was the most important predictor. The implication is that to keep patients satisfied and willing to return for subsequent treatments, the hospitals should invest more on training their personnel.

Effect of an Educational Intervention on Medical Student Scripting and Patient Satisfaction: A Randomized Trial.

IntroductionEffective communication between clinicians and patients has been shown to improve patient outcomes, reduce malpractice liability, and is now being tied to reimbursement. Use of a communication strategy known as “scripting” has been suggested to improve patient satisfaction in multiple hospital settings, but the frequency with which medical students use this strategy and whether this affects patient perception of medical student care is unknown. Our objective was to measure the use of targeted communication skills after an educational intervention as well as to further clarify the relationship between communication element usage and patient satisfaction.MethodsMedical students were block randomized into the control or intervention group. Those in the intervention group received refresher training in scripted communication. Those in the control group received no instruction or other intervention related to communication. Use of six explicit communication behaviors were recorded by trained study observers: 1) acknowledging the patient by name, 2) introducing themselves as medical students, 3) explaining their role in the patient’s care, 4) explaining the care plan, 5) providing an estimated duration of time to be spent in the emergency department (ED), and 6) notifying the patient that another provider would also be seeing them. Patients then completed a survey regarding their satisfaction with the medical student encounter.ResultsWe observed 474 medical student-patient encounters in the ED (231 in the control group and 243 in the intervention group). We were unable to detect a statistically significant difference in communication element use between the intervention and control groups. One of the communication elements, explaining steps in the care plan, was positively associated with patient perception of the medical student’s overall communication skills. Otherwise, there was no statistically significant association between element use and patient satisfaction.ConclusionWe were unable to demonstrate any improvement in student use of communication elements or in patient satisfaction after refresher training in scripted communication. Furthermore, there was little variation in patient satisfaction based on the use of scripted communication elements. Effective communication with patients in the ED is complicated and requires further investigation on how to provide this skill set.

This study aims to explore social differences in patient satisfaction of their general practitioner (GP) according to patient's gender, education, household income and ethnicity in Europe. By using multilevel logistic modelling the impact of socioeconomic indicators (i.e. gender, education, household income and ethnicity) on patient satisfaction is estimated. In each model the authors controlled for indicators of person-focused care and strength of the primary care system. Primary care in 31 European countries. Patients who were sitting in the waiting room of the GP were asked to participate. They filled in the questionnaire after the consultation with the GP. Describing social differences in patient satisfaction among European primary care patients. Patient satisfaction. This study confirms previous research and reveals high levels of satisfaction with primary care in Europe. On average, 92.1% of the respondents would recommend their GP to their family or relatives. Variance in patient satisfaction is mostly explained at patient level, ~75% of the variance can be assigned to patient characteristics. Likewise, women, low-income groups and first generation migrants are less satisfied with their GP. Lastly, all indicators of person-focused care are positively associated with patient satisfaction, showing that the more person-focused the care, the higher the satisfaction among the patients. Notwithstanding the high satisfaction rates in Europe, patient satisfaction is still determined by patients' socioeconomic status (gender and household income), migration background and the degree of person-centred care. Therefore, policymakers and health professionals should target these population groups in order to improve the satisfaction rates in their country.

Urban-rural difference in satisfaction with primary healthcare services in Ghana

BackgroundUnderstanding regional variation in patient satisfaction about healthcare systems (PHCs) on the quality of services provided is instrumental to improving quality and developing a patient-centered healthcare system by making it more responsive especially to the cultural aspects of health demands of a population. Reaching to the innovative National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Ghana, surpassing several reforms in healthcare financing has been a milestone. However, the focus of NHIS is on the demand side of healthcare delivery. Studies focusing on the supply side of healthcare delivery, particularly the quality of service as perceived by the consumers are required. A growing number of studies have focused on regional differences of patient satisfaction in developed countries, however little research has been conducted concerning patient satisfaction in resource-poor settings like in Ghana. This study was therefore dedicated to examining the variation in satisfaction across rural and urban women in Ghana.MethodsData for the present study were obtained from the latest demographic and health survey in Ghana (GDHS 2014). Participants were 3576 women aged between 15 and 49 years living in non-institutional settings in Ghana. Summary statistics in percentages was used to present respondents’ demographic, socioeconomic characteristics. Chi-square test was used to find association between urban-rural differentials with socio-economic variables. Multiple logistic regression was performed to measure the association of being satisfied with primary healthcare services with study variables. Model fitness was tested by pseudo R2. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.ResultsThe findings in this study revealed that about 57.1% were satisfied with primary health care services. The urban and rural areas reported 57.6 and 56.6% respectively which showed no statistically significant difference (z = 0.64; p = 0.523; 95%CI: -0.022, 0.043). Bivariate analysis showed that region, highest level of education, wealth index and type of facility were significantly associated with location of residence (urban-rural areas). After adjusting for confounding variables using logistic regression, geographical location became a key factor of satisfaction with primary healthcare services by location of residence. In urban areas, respondents from Greater Accra had 64% increase in the level of satisfaction when compared to those in Western region (OR = 1.64; 95CI: 1.09–2.47), Upper East had 75% increase in satisfaction compared to Western region (OR = 1.75; 95%CI: 1.08–2.84), Northern had an estimated 44% reduction in satisfaction when compared to Western region (OR = 0.56; 95%CI: 0.34–0.92). However, rural areas in Central, Volta, Eastern, Ashanti, Brong Aghafo, Northern and Upper West region had 51, 81, 69, 46, 62, 75 and 61% reduction respectively in the level of satisfaction when compared to Western region.ConclusionsPatient satisfaction is an important indicator of health outcomes. Quality of care and measuring level of patient satisfaction has been found to be the most useful tool to predict utilization and compliance. In fact, satisfied patients are more likely than unsatisfied ones to continue using health care services. Our results suggest that policymakers need to better understand the determinants of satisfaction with the health system and how different socio-demographic groups perceive satisfaction with healthcare services so as to address health inequalities between urban and rural areas within the same country.

Study on patient satisfaction of outpatient department in ESI Hospitals at Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Surat in state of Gujarat

ABSTRACTBackground: Employee State Insurance Scheme is a multidimensional social security system based on the principle of ‘pooling of risks and resources’. The ESI Corporation is providing medical facilities to the insured persons and their family through large network of hospitals and dispensaries all over India. Outpatient Department (OPD) of ESI Hospital is the first point of contact of the hospital with patients. The care in the OPD is believed to indicate the quality of services of a hospital and is reflected by patients’ satisfaction with the services being provided.Design/Methodology/Approach: Hundred and eighty-five patients were approached at the end of their OPD visits at ESI Hospitals at Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Surat with the help of structured questionnaire in Gujarati language.Finding: Six independent variables together explains 81.60 percent of the overall variation in patient satisfaction of OPD in ESI Hospitals at Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Surat without multi-collinearity.Practical Implications: Finding of this study will help the government in the implementation of medical facility at the outpatient ward in ESI Hospitals in very effective way. It will also become an initiating document for other researchers to further discuss and improve the status of healthcare delivery services in ESI Hospitals.

To what extent does patient experience account for variation in patient satisfaction with a healthcare system?

Background: Patient experience and patient satisfaction, the two recognized indicators for assessing the quality of healthcare, are related, but distinct concepts. While there is existing evidence concerning a statistically significant association between these two concepts, research on the extent to which patient experience accounts for variation in patients’ overall satisfaction with health services has produced contradictory results. Objectives: The primary aim of this paper was to determine the extent to which satisfaction with a healthcare system is explained by patient experience. A secondary objective was to identify the aspects of patient experience that relate most strongly to satisfaction with health services.Methods: The study was a secondary analysis of quantitative data from the 2006 Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) Survey. Multivariate regression analysis was used to assess the association between global satisfaction and CAHPS domains of patient-reported experience with healthcare. Pearson product moment correlation coefficients were computed to ascertain the aspects of patients’ experiences that have strong association with their overall satisfaction. Findings: Much (67.4%) of the variation in overall patient satisfaction was accounted for by patient experience. Factors related to patient-professional relationship related strongly with patients’ overall satisfaction with health servicesConclusion: Patient experience of care is a major determinant of patients’ overall satisfaction with a healthcare system and the two concepts are not marginally related.

Patient-centeredness and its impact on patient satisfaction and treatment outcomes in medical rehabilitation

ObjectiveTo examine the impact of patient-centeredness for patient satisfaction and treatment outcomes. MethodA multicenter cross-sectional survey study with patients (n=1033) in nine medical rehabilitation centers in Germany was conducted. Data was analyzed with multiple linear regression. Predictors were patient-centeredness (CCRQ-15) and patient́s age, employment and therapeutic indication; outcomes were patient satisfaction and treatment outcomes (changes in living conditions and health status). ResultsThe regression model could explain 54% of variance in patient satisfaction. The strongest predictor was decision-making/communication (β=0.34). In treatment outcome, 19% of variance of changes in living conditions and 21% of variance of changes in state of health could be explained. The strongest predictor in both variables was self-management/empowerment (β=0.40 and 0.32, respectively). ConclusionThe results emphasize the relevance of patient-centered treatments for patient satisfaction and treatment results. The evidence is provided for the first time in medical rehabilitation. Practice implicationsFurther studies should consider multilevel modeling and diverse survey methods. Continued implementation and evaluation of patient-centeredness in the medical rehabilitation treatment are recommended measures. Promoting shared decision-making, effective clinician-patient communication, and increased patient empowerment are essential, e.g. by patient education programs or staff training in shared decision-making.

Meta-analysis: methodological confounders in measuring patient satisfaction

The study aimed to identify methodological confounding factors affecting patient satisfaction survey results. The data gathered from CINAHL and PubMed databases consisted of 355 surveys published from 2006 to 2012. Linear regression and Bayesian models, with seven potential survey-related confounders together with patient age and gender as explanatory variables, were constructed. According to the linear model, up to 12% of the original variation in patient satisfaction was explained by confounding variables, not by the actual variation in satisfaction. The presence of an interviewer resulted in lower satisfaction levels, and the satisfaction results correlated negatively with the number of items in the questionnaire. According to the Bayesian model, if patients were over 60 years old and the questionnaire consisted mainly of positively phrased items, the probability of rating their experiences as very satisfied was 75%. The Bayesian and linear models endorsed each other and revealed specifically that the surveys reporting high patient satisfaction could be predicted on the basis of confounding variables. The following recommendations are given for constructing a patient satisfaction survey: use neutral rather than negatively or positively phrased items, and use enough items to increase the likelihood that the least satisfactory care components are also included in order to better enable comparisons across sporadic surveys.

Patient satisfaction and psychological well-being after internet-based cognitive behavioral stress management (IB-CBSM) for women with preterm labor: A randomized controlled trial

Objective and methodsDespite its value for the management of psychological burden, little is known about the efficacy of and patient satisfaction with internet-based cognitive behavioral stress management (IB-CBSM) for women with preterm labor. The present study sets out to analyze stress/anxiety reduction, patient satisfaction and patient's working alliance in a group of 58 women with preterm labor participating in an online psychological stress management project. As part of the project, women were randomly assigned to online stress management or a control condition. ResultsLevels of stress and anxiety decreased significantly in both conditions from pre- to post-treatment measure. Participants in IB-CBSM reported significant higher working alliance inventory (WAI) scores in the task and goal subscale (p<.001; p<.05) than women in the control condition. In Addition the IB-CBSM group showed significant correlations of the WAI subscale task and goal and the stress/anxiety outcome. Regarding patient satisfaction, women in the IB-CBSM reported significantly higher satisfaction scores (p<.001) than women in the control condition. WAI explained nearly 40% of the variance in patient satisfaction. Furthermore, WAI mediates, at least in part, the relationship between group condition and patient satisfaction. ConclusionThe current analysis indicated that participants in IB-CBSM had higher WAI scores and were more satisfied with the program. In addition only the IB-CBSM group showed significant correlations of the WAI with the stress/anxiety reduction outcome. Based on these findings, it can be presumed that measures of agreement with working alliance parameters, especially task and goal components, are substantially important for more effective and satisfactory therapeutic interventions.
