Phenotypic plasticity, and temporal and spatial variation in the relative abundance of lentic brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, across Ontario.

Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) are a highly prized species found in lakes and streams throughout Ontario. A broadscale monitoring program (BsM) has been conducted in lakes throughout the province, in 5-year cycles, which targets Salvelinus fontinalis populations. The objective of this study was to use the data gained from the BsM and establish a contemporary baseline on the variation of relative abundance and demographics of natural lake populations of S. fontinalis in Ontario. Additionally, given the variability in environmental conditions across the landscape, an objective was to assess the factors, abiotic and biotic, that influence relative abundance among waterbodies. Over the three BsM cycles (2008-2022), 273 S. fontinalis waterbodies were assessed, some multiple times, and 124 were unique populations. S. fontinalis were sampled in 112 of these unique lakes. In total, 7487 S. fontinalis were caught and 5372 were fully sampled (length, weight, and age assessed). The mean catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) in all waterbodies was 1.4 (0.12 standard error) S. fontinalis per net gang. There was not a significant trend in CPUE over the three BsM cycles nor did CPUE vary significantly among BsM cycles at the provincial scale, but CPUE varied significantly among fisheries management zones (FMZs). Multiple variables were examined to explain the variation in CPUE across the province; a negative association with species diversity was the only variable considered significant. Furthermore, S. fontinalis were more associated with the relative abundance of small cyprinids (i.e., chubs and shiners) and negatively associated with centrarchids, smelt, and other game species. Mean growth potential was greater for males than females but not significantly, whereas longevity favored females. Growth potential and parameters were similar between sexes within FMZs but varied among FMZs. Mean survival among these populations was 25.7%, ranging from 15.2% to 45.6%, with a mean instantaneous mortality of 1.41. This study provided a contemporary assessment of the current range and variability in relative abundance population dynamics of S. fontinalis in lakes within Ontario. This provides a benchmark to assess changes with the pending stressors of climate change and human expansion across the landscape.

Marine‐climate interactions with the blue shark (Prionace glauca) catches in the western coast of Baja California Peninsula, Mexico

AbstractFishery and size data by sex of 28,110 blue sharks (Prionace glauca) from 2162 longline sets documented by observers on board 204 fishery trips from the industrial fleet based in Ensenada, Mexico during 2006–2016, were used to conduct a spatial–temporal analysis of the catch‐per‐unit‐effort (CPUE) and its relationship with climate indices along the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula. Catch length analysis by maturity groups indicated catches were composed mainly by juvenile females (58–199 cm TL) and males (60–179 cm TL). Relationships of seasonal CPUE with sea surface temperature (SST) and Chlorophyll‐a (Chl) were analyzed determining aggregations were in areas characterized by oceanographic physical processes. From the exploratory analysis of annual correlations of climate indices with CPUE, the local climate SanDiAs Index explained most variation in CPUE. A generalized additive model (GAM) with 13 predictor variables was applied to gain insight on their relationship with the total CPUE by size and sex groups. The model explained 50.5% of the total blue shark CPUE and 65.5% for juvenile females. The GAM results revealed blue shark CPUE is influenced by five relevant factors: SST, NPGO, year, latitude with distance to coast and quarter interactions, and hooks set. There is a trend to increase or decrease of CPUE when compared with the delay of NEI and SanDiAs indices in more than 1 year. Local and regional climate indices can be successful tools for forecasting blue shark catches in the Northwestern Mexican Pacific.

Relationships between environmental variables and spatial and temporal distribution of jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) in the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea.

The jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) is both a dominant pelagic fish species and an important fishing target in the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea. However, the resource status of this species fluctuates dramatically, and it has recently been added to a “red list” of threatened species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Despite its economic importance and decreasing population status, limited research on its spatiotemporal distribution has been undertaken over the last decades. In order to evaluate the most crucial factors that influence the spatiotemporal variability of T. japonicus and to determine GAM performance and predictability, we analyze catch per unit effort (CPUE) of T. japonicus from Beibu Gulf over four seasons (months) from 2013 to 2014. A generalized additive model (GAMs) is populated with water depth and remotely sensed sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface salinity (SSS), sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) and sea level anomaly (SLA). The CPUE of T. japonicus varies seasonally, with higher CPUE in summer and autumn than in spring and winter, and the highest CPUE in summer. GAM results explain 57% of the deviation explained in CPUE, with the most important variables being SLA, Month, Depth, SSS, and SST , each explaining 21.2%, 18.7%, 10.7%, 5.1%, and 1.3% of the variation in CPUE, respectively. This species occurs mainly between 50 and 75 m depth, SSS values 32.3–33.5 PSU and SST 25–30.5 °C. High CPUE sites occur near SLA ≤ 0 m, on the edge of cold eddies, and there is a certain catch near the sea surface with SLA ≥ 0 m. The spatial and temporal distribution of T. japonicus is affected by the season and the marine hydrological environment. This study might contribute to a better understanding of the distributional patterns of T. japonicus as well as provide a basis for sustainable management in the Beibu Gulf.

Artificial lights improve the catchability of snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) traps

This study investigated the behaviour and commercial catchability of snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) in response to different low-powered LED lights under laboratory and field conditions. We created a novel choice-experiment in a laboratory setting in which we investigated the behaviour of snow crab in response to coloured LED lights. The results showed that snow crab movement was dependent on light colour, with animals choosing to move toward blue and white lights, away from purple lights, and no detectable effect for green and red lights. We then conducted two field experiments to investigate the effect of the same LED lights on the catch rates of commercial traps during the 2016 snow crab fishery on the east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. Results from the first field experiment showed that adding white and purple LED lights into baited traps significantly improved Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) by 77% and 47% respectively. Results from the second field experiment showed that unbaited traps equipped with only LED lights (no bait), could also catch snow crab in comparable amounts to traditional baited traps, with soak time and depth explaining some of the variation in CPUE. Taken together, these experiments suggest that fishing enterprises can improve their catching performance and profitability by adding LED lights to their traps, or by using LED lights as a bait replacement.

Quantifying relative fish abundance with eDNA: a promising tool for fisheries management

Summary Assessment and monitoring of exploited fish populations are challenged by costs, logistics and negative impacts on target populations. These factors therefore limit large‐scale effective management strategies. Evidence is growing that the quantity of eDNA may be related not only to species presence/absence, but also to species abundance. In this study, the concentrations of environmental DNA (eDNA) from a highly prized sport fish species, Lake Trout Salvelinus namaycush (Walbaum 1792), were estimated in water samples from 12 natural lakes and compared to abundance and biomass data obtained from standardized gillnet catches as performed routinely for fisheries management purposes. To reduce environmental variability among lakes, all lakes were sampled in spring, between ice melt and water stratification. The eDNA concentration did not vary significantly with water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and turbidity, but was significantly positively correlated with relative fish abundance estimated as catch per unit effort (CPUE), whereas the relationship with biomass per unit effort (BPUE) was less pronounced. The value of eDNA to inform about local aquatic species distribution was further supported by the similarity between the spatial heterogeneity of eDNA distribution and spatial variation in CPUE measured by the gillnet method. Synthesis and applications. Large‐scale empirical evidence of the relationship between the eDNA concentration and species abundance allows for the assessment of the potential to integrate eDNA within fisheries management plans. As such, the eDNA quantitative method represents a promising population abundance assessment tool that could significantly reduce the costs associated with sampling and increase the power of detection, the spatial coverage and the frequency of sampling, without any negative impacts on fish populations.

Fish and fisher behaviour influence the vulnerability of groupers (Epinephelidae) to fishing at a multispecies spawning aggregation site

Targeted fishing of spawning aggregations is a major contributor to extinction risk in numerous species of grouper (Epinephelidae). Marine reserves are often used to protect spawning aggregation sites, including multispecies sites shared by several species of grouper. However, marine reserves may be biologically, socioeconomically or culturally unviable in some fisheries, and alternative management actions must be explored. Implementing effective management actions that control rather than prohibit fishing requires an improved understanding of how species vary in their vulnerability to fishing gears and respond to changes in fishing effort. To estimate sources of variability in vulnerability to fishing (i.e. catchability), catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) and other fisheries data were collected in parallel with underwater visual census-derived estimates of aggregation size at a multispecies spawning site of Epinephelus fuscoguttatus and E. polyphekadion. Despite having similar abundances, E. polyphekadion was eightfold more vulnerable to capture by hook-and-line gear, clearly outcompeting its congener for bait. Contrasting with the common assumption of a proportional relationship, the CPUE of both species was unrelated to the size of their respective aggregations. Moreover, the CPUE of each species was unrelated to hook size and depth fished. However, E. polyphekadion CPUE declined as the density of fishing effort increased at the site, with gear saturation identified as the likely mechanism for this effect. E. fuscoguttatus CPUE was negatively related to the size of aggregations formed by its congener, stemming from the superior competitiveness and therefore higher selectivity of the gear for E. polyphekadion. Our findings demonstrate that CPUE is an unreliable indicator of spawning aggregation status. The other sources of variation in CPUE that we identify have implications for gear-based management, which must be based on understanding of gear selectivity for aggregating species, and fishing effort controls, which must consider the potential for effort-dependent patterns in catchability.

Willow grouse bag size is more sensitive to variation in hunter effort than to variation in willow grouse density

Annual variation in harvested animals (hereafter bag size) is often used as an index of population abundance when investigating population dynamics. Few studies have evaluated how well bag size tracks population change despite its widespread use. Two recent studies on grouse harvest statistics have reached contrasting conclusions. Th ere is limited information about the functional response of hunters in relation to varying game densities, and effort is seldom recorded. We investigated how much of the variation in bag size (total number of harvested grouse km−2) is explained by variation in willow grouse Lagopus lagopus density (adult and young grouse km−2) and hunting eff ort (total number of hunting days km−2). We also evaluated catch per unit effort (CPUE) as an index of grouse abundance, and estimated the response in harvest rate (total bag size in relation to total grouse density) to varying hunting effort. We used data from the 88 management areas on state land in Jämtland county, Sweden (1996–2007), where hunting days and bag size are recorded in detail. Willow grouse density was estimated in four of these management areas in August using line transects and distance sampling. The hunting effort and total grouse density explained most of the variation in bag size (R2= 0.89). Bag size was twice as sensitive to changes in hunting effort compared to changes in grouse density. More than a ten times change in the grouse population density was required to one unit change in bag size. The use of CPUE did not provide a better alternative index of grouse density, and variation in density only explained 23% of the variation in CPUE. Harvest rate showed a strong relationship with hunting effort, and we suggest that an upper limit in hunting effort can be used to reduce the risk of high harvest rates. Hunters became more efficient at low densities and controlling hunting effort is most important when there are indications of population lows and/or poor breeding. CPUE may be less sensitive to changes in game abundance than previously assumed, and bag size as a proxy for population density would then depend on the ability of hunters to adjust their effort according to population change. We speculate that this ability will depend on whether or not hunters have long‐term experience of a hunting area where they can return to hunt throughout the hunting season. We propose that recording hunting eff ort should be encouraged and possible correlations with game abundance and other factors such as weather should be investigated for game species.

Metabolic rate throughout the annual cycle reveals the demands of an Arctic existence in Great Cormorants

Aquatic endotherms living in polar regions are faced with a multitude of challenges, including low air and water temperatures and low illumination, especially in winter. Like other endotherms from cold environments, Great Cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) living in Arctic waters were hypothesized to respond to these challenges through a combination of high daily rate of energy expenditure (DEE) and high food requirements, which are met by a high rate of catch per unit effort (CPUE). CPUE has previously been shown in Great Cormorants to be the highest of any diving bird. In the present study, we tested this hypothesis by making the first measurements of DEE and foraging activity of Arctic-dwelling Great Cormorants throughout the annual cycle. We demonstrate that, in fact, Great Cormorants have surprisingly low rates of DEE. This low DEE is attributed primarily to very low levels of foraging activity, particularly during winter, when the cormorants spent only 2% of their day submerged. Such a low level of foraging activity can only be sustained through consistently high foraging performance. We demonstrate that Great Cormorants have one of the highest recorded CPUEs for a diving predator; 18.6 g per minute submerged (95% prediction interval 13.0-24.2 g/min) during winter. Temporal variation in CPUE was investigated, and highest CPUE was associated with long days and shallow diving depths. The effect of day length is attributed to seasonal variation in prey abundance. Shallow diving leads to high CPUE because less time is spent swimming between the surface and the benthic zone where foraging occurs. Our study demonstrates the importance of obtaining accurate measurements of physiology and behavior from free-living animals when attempting to understand their ecology.

Settlement and pigmentation of glass eels (Anguilla rostrata Lesueur) in a coastal lagoon

American eel (Anguilla rostrata Lesueur) is born in the Atlantic Ocean, but larvae redistribute throughout diverse habitats of North American estu- aries and freshwater streams. We hypothesized that early stage A. rostrata differed in abundance among sites within a single coastal lagoon, Newport Bay (Maryland) for two sampling seasons (March-May in 2007 and 2008). Catch per unit effort (CPUE) of early stage A. rostrata was usually similar between years at a site, except that it was higher at one site in 2008 than in 2007. The CPUE varied among sites within Newport Bay, but not significantly so because of high, intra-annual variance in CPUE at a site. As reported for New Jersey coastal estuaries, variation in the CPUE tended to be higher in brackish water habitats. Intra-annual variation in CPUE from March until May was partially explained by oxygenation and salinity. The CPUE of settling eels was greatest when water was well-oxygenated (dissolved oxygen >8 mg·L −1 ) and mildly brackish (0.3-3.2 ppt). While larval supply to a coastal estuary may annually influence the magnitude of potential settlers, temporal differences in habitat conditions within Newport Bay also influenced settlement patterns. Differences in habitat conditions can affect the pigmentation rates of settling early stage eels. We measured rates of pigmentation, which corresponded with age of the fish. However, rates did not differ among sites or vary with habitat conditions. Pigmentation levels from March to May increased at a rate of about 0.02% per week. Monitoring programs for early phase American eel should consider the steepness of habitat gradients within estuaries and habitat covariates when assessing population status.

The relative importance of lunar phase and environmental conditions on striped marlin ( Tetrapturus audax) catches in sport fishing

We used generalized additive mixed models to analyze data on striped marlin ( Tetrapturus audax) catches in Baja California sport fisheries (1987–1989) to investigate the relative importance of lunar phase, sea surface temperature (SST), El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index, and vessel effects on catch per unit effort (CPUE). The results indicate that the moon phase has no or little (<1% of variance explained) influence on CPUE. In contrast, both SST (10%) and ENSO (6%) influenced CPUE positively. While most of the variation in CPUE remains unexplained (53%), the vessel identity explained small (ca. 1.5%) but significant amount of variance in CPUE. Hence, sport fishermen wishing to maximise their striped marlin catches would best plan their trips on the basis of weather conditions and boat/crew identities, rather than on the basis of lunar phase.

Inverse regional responses to climate change and fishing intensity by the recreational rockfish (Sebastes spp.) fishery in California

The interactive effects of ocean climate and fishing pressure on nearshore rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) were examined using historical commercial passenger fishing vessel catch records from California. Principal component analysis was used to characterize the dominant patterns in catch per unit effort (CPUE) over time (1957–1999) and space (10′ latitude × 10′ longitude blocks). Ocean climate explained 60% of the variation in CPUE and revealed opposite responses in northern and southern California. In warm El Niño years, CPUE was 4.2 times higher in the north and 1.8 times lower in the south. CPUE responded similarly to low-frequency climate shifts by increasing in the north and decreasing in the south after 1976–1977. Four geographic regions responded as discrete units to environmental forcing and fishing intensity: North, Central, South, and Channel Islands. Over time, annual fish landings declined sharply in the South, with fishing effort remaining stationary and high relative to that in the other regions. In the North, landings and fishing effort remained tightly coupled, with effort an order of magnitude lower than in the South. These findings support a management strategy for nearshore rockfishes in California based on regional responses to ocean climate and fishing intensity.

Effects of environmental variables on fish feeding ecology: implications for the performance of baited fishing gear and stock assessment

The effectiveness of baited fishing gear ultimately depends upon behaviour of the target species – activity rhythms, feeding motivation, and sensory and locomotory abilities. While any environmental parameter that mediates feeding or locomotion can have an important influence on the active space presented by the bait and fish catchability, few biologists have considered how such variation in behaviour might affect catch per unit effort (CPUE) and the resultant stock abundance estimates or population parameters. This review reveals that environment‐related variation in feeding behaviour can act through four different mechanisms: metabolic processes, sensory limitations, social interactions and direct impacts. Water temperature, light level, current velocity and ambient prey density are likely to have largest effects on fish catchability, potentially affecting variation in CPUE by a factor of ten. Feeding behaviour is also density‐dependent, with both positive and negative effects. Over time and geographic space a target species can occupy wide ranges of environmental conditions, and in certain cases, spatial and temporal variation in feeding biology could have a larger impact on CPUE than patterns of abundance. Temperature, light and current can be measured with relative facility and corrections to stock assessment models are feasible. Making corrections for biological variables such as prey density and bait competitors will be more difficult because the measurements are often not practical and relationships to feeding catchability are more complex and poorly understood. There is a critical need for greater understanding of how environmental variables affect feeding‐related performance of baited fishing gear. A combination of field observations and laboratory experiments will be necessary to parameterize stock assessment models that are improved to accommodate variation in fish behaviour. Otherwise, survey data could reveal more about variation in behaviour than abundance trends.

Analysis of the factors affecting crustacean trawl fishery catch rates in the northern Tyrrhenian Sea (western Mediterranean)

The aim of this study was to analyse the main factors affecting catch rates of the most important decapod crustaceans of the bottom trawl fishery in the northern Tyrrhenian Sea, western Mediterranean. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) data (kg/fishing day/boat) of deep water rose shrimp, Parapenaeus longirostris, Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, and red shrimps, Aristaemorpha foliacea and Aristeus antennatus, were collected monthly in the years 1991–1999 at the auction of Porto Santo Stefano, where these species are traditionally exploited by trawlers using traditional trawl nets. The application of cluster analysis to the entire data set allowed the identification of three main “metiers” or fishing tactics, corresponding to different fishing grounds, species assemblages and characteristics of vessels. Two “metiers” corresponded to fishing activity targeting the above-mentioned crustacean species. Generalised linear modelling was used to investigate the influence of factors such as month, year and vessel on catch rates of the species studied. This model explained a considerable amount of variability in the CPUE data, which substantially reflected the differences observed in the trends of monthly landings of these species. Month was an important factor explaining deviance in the CPUE for the deep water rose shrimp, but especially for the two red shrimps. This was mostly due to the temporal pattern in the catchability of these species, as well as the seasonality of the fishing effort targeting these resources. Year significantly contributed to the variation in CPUE of all the species studied, in particular for P. longirostris, confirming that the abundance of this species is subject to distinctive inter-annual fluctuations. Vessel was a significant factor determining variability in CPUE for P. longirostris and, especially, in N. norvegicus. No single boat characteristic such as length, gross registered tonnage and engine power provided a more satisfactory explanation than the vessel factor as a whole. For Norway lobster, the high variation explained by the vessel is attributable to the fact that the fishing fleet targeting this species was the most heterogeneous, involving two different “métiers” and, therefore, boats differing in size and in fishing practices.

Management of Largemouth Bass at Kentucky and Barkley Lakes, Kentucky

Largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides populations declined in Kentucky and Barkley lakes following a severe drought during Dec 1984–Oct 1988 and below normal rainfall in three of four years during 1989–1992. Regression models developed for both reservoirs indicated that recruitment of largemouth bass to age 1 was positively related to the electrofishing catch per unit effort (CPUE) of large age-0 bass and negatively related to annual rainfall amounts and the CPUE of all sizes of age-0 largemouth bass. These variables explained 73% of the variation in CPUE of age-1 bass at Barkley Lake and 60% at Kentucky Lake. We also developed regression models to estimate the recruitment of largemouth bass to the fishery at age 5 and older. Recruitment to the fishery at Kentucky Lake was positively related to the CPUE of age-1 bass and negatively related to reservoir discharge. This model explained 52% of the variation in recruitment to age 5 and older largemouth bass. Recruitment to age 5 and older fish at Barkley Lake was positively related to the CPUE of age-1 bass and rainfall and negatively related to reservoir discharge. The model developed at Barkley Lake explained 82% of the variation in recruitment of largemouth bass to the fishery. The models predicted that the largemouth bass fisheries at both reservoirs would decline through 2001 under the current angling regulations, which include a 356-mm minimum length limit and one fish less than 356-mm total length allowed in the angler's creel. We used these models, in consultation with the public, to change length limits to a 381-mm minimum length limit in an attempt to moderate the expected declines in older fish.

A test of crayfish predatory and nonpredatory fish species as bait in crayfish traps

The effectiveness of different crayfish: predatory (pike, Esox lucius L., perch, Perca fluviatilis L.) and nonpredatory [roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), and bream, Abramis brama (L.)] fish species as bait for noble crayfish, Astacus astacus L., was tested. Trapping was conducted in two lakes in Norway and Lithuania. Nonpredatory bream and roach were superior as noble crayfish bait compared with predatory perch and pike. In the Norwegian lake bream was also superior to roach. Pike‐ and perch‐baited traps tended to catch larger crayfish than bream‐ and roach‐baited traps. An alarm or avoidance response to different live or dead fish predators (e.g. pike or perch) might exist and could be more pronounced in smaller crayfish, thus explaining that pike and perch as bait catch fewer and larger crayfish. Another explanation could be that the odour of pike and perch flesh is simply less attractive or diffuses more slowly through the water. Selecting the most efficient bait will increase the catch per unit effort (CPUE); in this study there was a four‐fold variation in CPUE between the best and worst bait type. In test‐fishing/monitoring surveys it is important to standardize the bait type used.

Seasonal Variation in Trap-Net Catches of Bluegill in Minnesota Lakes

Abstract We assessed the seasonal variation of trap-net catches of bluegill Lepoomis macrochirus in Minnesota lakes. Size and catch per unit effort (CPUE) of bluegill declined from June through August. The highest CPUE of bluegills longer than 149 mm total length occurred when gonads were most developed. Regression models indicated day of year explained 66% of the variation in biomass per lift, 63% of the variation in CPUE of bluegills longer than 149 mm, and 40% of the variation in CPUE for all sizes of bluegill. Similar trends in temporal variation of biomass per lift and CPUE were seen in the statewide data set of Minnesota surveys. Seasonal variation should be accounted for when data on trap-net catches of bluegill are used for management decisions.
