Nowadays, in order to reduce the cost of replacement heifers raising, early insemination and, accordingly, earlier use of cows are practiced in many farms. The purpose of the research is to study the relationship between milk productivity and the age of the first insemination of Holstein heifers under the conditions of OOO Kaluzhskaya Niva (a limited liability company under the laws of Russian Federation) in the Peremyshl district. The experimental groups were formed from cows with completed fourth lactation, taking into account the age of the first fruitful insemination. As the result of the study, it was found out that the optimal insemination index is observed at heifers of the first and second groups upon reaching the age of 12-14 months with a live weight of 337.6-340.9 kg. The shortage of live weight of heifers by the age of 12 months lengthens the time of raising, and reduces the effectiveness of their insemination (group 4 – the multiplicity of insemination is 3.3). The maximum growth rate was observed at heifers of the first group and made 865-931 g/day, which is 6.1-32.1% higher than in heifers of the other groups. When analyzing the dairy productivity of cows, there is a tendency to decrease the level at the second and third lactations, and an increase in the fourth lactation in comparison with the first one. More balanced lactation activity in a number of lactations is observed in cows of the third group (II lactation decreased by 2%, III - decreased by 5%, IV – increased by 17.5%, compared with the first lactation). At the same time, the variation in milk yield in cows of the other groups ranges from -9.2% to +20.6%. The differences in the indicators of the mass fraction of fat and the mass fraction of protein in milk of cows of different groups are not significant. The tendency of decrease of the mass fraction of fat in milk in cows of all groups is noted by the 4th lactation, with increase in the mass fraction of protein. Thus, for the manifestation of high milk productivity and its preservation in a number of lactation, the optimal age for the first insemination of Holstein heifers is 15-16 months.

Differences in Lactation Performance, Rumen Microbiome, and Metabolome between Montbéliarde × Holstein and Holstein Cows under Heat Stress.

Heat stress negatively affects lactation performance and rumen microbiota of dairy cows, with different breeds showing varying levels of heat tolerance. This study aimed to compare the lactation performance of Montbéliarde × Holstein (MH, n = 13) and Holstein (H, n = 13) cows under heat stress, and 16S rRNA sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) were used to determine the rumen microbiome and metabolome in experimental cows. The results indicated that during heat stress, milk yield (p = 0.101), milk fat yield, milk protein yield, milk protein, and milk lactose (p < 0.05) in Montbéliarde × Holstein cows were higher than those in Holstein cows, whereas milk yield variation and somatic cell counts (p < 0.05) were lower than those in Holstein cows. The sequencing results indicated that the rumen of Montbéliarde × Holstein cows was significantly enriched with beneficial bacteria, such as Rikenellaceae, Allobaculum, and YRC22 (p < 0.05). In addition, correlations were observed between specific ruminal bacteria and lactation performance. Ruminal metabolites related to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in Montbéliarde × Holstein cows than in Holstein cows. Overall, Montbéliarde × Holstein cows showed higher production efficiency under heat stress, which may be related to the different rumen mechanisms of crossbred and Holstein cows in adapting to heat stress.

Longitudinal characterization of serum metabolome and lipidome reveals that the ceramide profile is associated with metabolic health in early postpartum cows experiencing different lipolysis

Reduced feed intake in early lactation prompts increased fat mobilization to meet dairy cow energy needs for milk production. The increased lipolysis in cows presents significant health risks with unclear mechanisms. The objectives of our study were to compare the longitudinal profiles of metabolites and lipids of serum from high- and low-lipolysis cows. Forty multiparous Holstein dairy cows were enrolled in the retrospective study. Serum samples were collected on d 7 before expected calving, as well as on d 5, 7, 14, and 21 postpartum. Dairy cows were grouped according to mean serum nonesterified fatty acids on d 5 and 7 after parturition as low (<0.600 mmol/L; n = 8; LFM) and high (>0.750 mmol/L; n = 8; HFM), indicating fat mobilization during early lactation. Lactational performance and serum metabolic parameters related to glucose and lipid metabolism, liver functions, oxidative status, and inflammatory responses were determined. Serum samples were subjected to liquid chromatography-MS-based metabolomics and lipidomics. Despite differences in postpartum BW change, there were no observed variations in milk yield and composition between the 2 groups. Serum β-hydroxybutyric acid, glucose, leptin, aspartate aminotransferase, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor alpha were greater in cows with HFM than in cows with LFM. Serum adiponectin, revised quantitative insulin sensitivity check index, and albumin were lower in cows with HFM than in cows with LFM. Intensified fat mobilization in the HFM cows came along with reduced estimated insulin sensitivity, impaired liver functions, and increased oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. Differences in metabolic patterns were observed across the transition period when comparing serum blood matrixes (e.g., in different amino acids, acylcarnitines, and sphingolipids). The serum metabolome of the HFM cows was characterized by higher concentrations of glycine, acylcarnitines, carnosine, Cer(d20:0/18:0), Cer(d18:1/16:0), and Cer(t18:0/24:0) compared with LFM cows. The differential serum metabolites and lipids at different sampling times during the peripartum period were enriched in the sphingolipid metabolism. Differences in serum metabolic status parameters suggest that cows adopt varied metabolic adaptation strategies to cope with energy deficits postpartum. Our investigation found a comprehensive remodeling of the serum metabolic profiles in transition dairy cattle, highlighting the significance of alterations in sphingolipid species, as they play a crucial role in insulin resistance and metabolic disorders.

Milk yield and quality at udder quarter level are influenced by quarter position, pathogen, and somatic cell score

There is a paucity of information about milk composition and quality at the quarter level from complete milking of the udder, mainly because of the difficulties of sampling procedures which imply the adoption of a vacuum system connected to four independent buckets. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of quarter position, intramammary infection status, and somatic cells on milk yield and composition at the mammary quarter level of Simmental cows. Milk samples were collected during three consecutive days, after milking individual mammary quarters of 10 lactating cows separately, for a total of 120 quarter milk samples. Samples were analysed for composition, somatic cell count (SCC), differential SCC, and bacterial culture. Somatic cell count was log-transformed to somatic cell score (SCS) to achieve normality of distribution. Sources of variation of milk yield and quality traits were investigated using a linear mixed model which included the fixed effects of quarter position (1 to 4), pathogen presence (positive or negative), and SCS class (low, medium-low, medium-high, and high). The interaction between cow and quarter position was included as random effect. Quarter position significantly affected milk yield, with rear udder quarters yielding more milk compared to their front counterparts, but with negligible effects on milk composition. Classes of SCS influenced milk composition, in a way that quarters with high SCS had lower lactose content and higher differential SCC. This study is a contribution towards the possibility to better understand physiological processes at cow udder quarter level.

Quantitative Associations between Season, Month, and Temperature-Humidity Index with Milk Yield, Composition, Somatic Cell Counts, and Microbial Load: A Comprehensive Study across Ten Dairy Farms over an Annual Cycle.

This current study addresses the knowledge gap regarding the influence of seasons, months, and THI on milk yield, composition, somatic cell counts (SCC), and total bacterial counts (TBC) of dairy farms in northeastern regions of Iran. For this purpose, ten dairy herds were randomly chosen, and daily milk production records were obtained. Milk samples were systematically collected from individual herds upon delivery to the dairy processing facility for subsequent analysis, including fat, protein, solids-not-fat (SNF), pH, SCC, and TBC. The effects of seasons, months, and THI on milk yield, composition, SCC, and TBC were assessed using an analysis of variance. To account for these effects, a mixed-effects model was utilized with a restricted maximum likelihood approach, treating month and THI as fixed factors. Our investigation revealed noteworthy correlations between key milk parameters and seasonal, monthly, and THI variations. Winter showed the highest milk yield, fat, protein, SNF, and pH (p < 0.01), whereas both SCC and TBC reached their lowest values in winter (p < 0.01). The highest values for milk yield, fat, and pH were recorded in January (p < 0.01), while the highest protein and SNF levels were observed in March (p < 0.01). December marked the lowest SCC and TBC values (p < 0.01). Across the THI spectrum, spanning from -3.6 to 37.7, distinct trends were evident. Quadratic regression models accounted for 34.59%, 21.33%, 4.78%, 20.22%, 1.34%, 15.42%, and 13.16% of the variance in milk yield, fat, protein, SNF, pH, SCC, and TBC, respectively. In conclusion, our findings underscore the significant impact of THI on milk production, composition, SCC, and TBC, offering valuable insights for dairy management strategies. In the face of persistent challenges posed by climate change, these results provide crucial guidance for enhancing production efficiency and upholding milk quality standards.

Effects of dairy cows' personality traits on their adaptation to an automated milking system following parturition

The objectives of this study were to determine how dairy cow personality traits affect their adaptation to an automated milking system (AMS) upon parturition, as well as whether these personality traits are consistent across the transition from gestation to lactation. Sixty Holstein dairy cows (19 primiparous and 41 multiparous) were assessed for personality traits using a combined arena test conducted at 24 d before parturition and 24 d after first introduction to an AMS, which occurred ∼3 d after parturition. The combined arena test comprised 3 parts: a novel arena test, a novel object test, and a novel human test. Principal component analysis of the behaviors recorded during the personality assessment revealed 3 factors interpreted as personality traits (75% cumulative variance) in the pre-calving test, interpreted as explore, active, and bold. The post-calving test revealed 2 factors (78% cumulative variance), interpreted as active and explore. Data from d 1 to 7 after introduction to the AMS were summarized by cow and associated with the pre-calving factors, and data from d 21 to 27 after introduction to the AMS were summarized by cow and associated with the post-calving factors. The active trait had a moderate positive correlation between the pre- and post-calving tests, whereas exploration had a weak positive correlation between tests. Cows that scored high for activeness in the pre-calving test tended to have fewer fetching events and a higher coefficient of variation of milk yield in the first 7 d after introduction to the AMS, whereas bolder cows tended to have higher milk yield during that period. In the post-calving test, more active cows tended to have more frequent milkings and voluntary visits per day, as well as a lower cumulative milk yield from d 21 to 27 after introduction to the AMS. Overall, these results indicate that personality traits of dairy cows are associated with adaptation and performance in an AMS, and that personality traits are consistent across the transition period. Specifically, cows that scored high for boldness and activeness adapted better to the AMS immediately after calving, whereas cows that scored low for activeness and high for boldness performed better in terms of milk yield and milking activity in early lactation. This study demonstrates that personality traits affect milking activity and milk yield of dairy cows milked with an AMS and, therefore, may be useful for selection of cows who might best adapt to and use an AMS.

Understanding variability in carbon footprint of smallholder dairy farms in the central highlands of Ethiopia.

Smallholder dairy farms face enormous challenges in increasing milk production while mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, thereby enhancing climate resilience. The carbon footprint (CF) of smallholder milk production is expected to increase with increasing demand for dairy products under the business-as-usual scenario. This study estimates the carbon footprint of smallholder milk production and examines variation across farms using data from 480 households to identify viable options for mitigating GHG emissions. We applied a cradle to farm-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) approach to examine the effects of farming systems on GHG emission intensities across intensification gradients of smallholder farms (SHF) from four potential dairy districts in the central highlands of Ethiopia. According to our findings, enteric fermentation was the primary source of GHG emissions, and methane(CH4) emissions from enteric fermentation and manure management accounted for the majority of total emissions across farms. The estimated average CF varies depending on farming systems, global warming potential (GWP), and allocation methods used. When GHG emissions were allocated to multiple products using economic allocation and based on IPCC (2007)and IPCC (2014)GWPs, the overall average CF of milk production was 1.91 and 2.35kg CO2e/kg fat and protein-corrected milk (FPCM), respectively. On average, milk accounted for 72% of total greenhouse gas emissions. In terms of farm typology, rural SHF systems produced significantly more CF per kg of milk than urban and peri-urban SHF systems. Variations in milk yield explained more than half of the variation in GHG emissions intensity at the farm level. Feed digestibility and feed efficiency had a negative and significant (P < 0.01) association with CF of SHF. Our findings suggested that improving feed digestibility and feed efficiency by increasing the proportion of concentrate and improved forage as well as chemically upgrading straw and crop residue could provide an opportunity to both increase milk yield and reduce the CF of milk production of SHF in the study area. Supporting SHF to realize strategies contributing to climate-resilient dairy development require interventions at several levels in the dairy value chain.

Optimal timing of seasonal calving of cows in the APC «Druzhba»

The choice of the optimal calving time for cows is of urgent importance for the economy. The influence of the calving season on the variability of milk productivity of brown Swiss cows of the APC "Druzhba" (Smolensk region) was studied. It was established that the milk yield of cows calved in the autumn-winter period for 305 days of lactation amounted to 6272 kg of milk, which is 251 kg (4%) higher than the productivity level of cows calved in the spring - summer period. In terms of the amount of milk fat, autumn calving cows exceeded summer cows by 12 kg or 5% (p?0.01), and protein by 10 kg. The range of variation and the coefficient of oscillation in milk yield was lower in animals of summer calving, the highest in cows of spring calving. The coefficient of variation in milk yield, fat and protein is less than 25% and corresponds to the average variability of traits in the groups. In animals calved in winter, the coefficient of lactation stability is 5% higher compared to cows of the spring season, in autumn this indicator is 2% more than in animals calved in summer, 8% in spring and 3% in winter. Revenue from the sale of milk from cows of autumn calving is higher compared to winter by 5.6 thousand rubles, of spring by 11.5 thousand rubles and of summer by 10.3 thousand rubles.

Milk yield variation partially attributed to blood oxygen-mediated neutrophil activation in lactating dairy goats.

Blood oxygen is an essential component for numerous biological processes of mammalian animals. Milk production of ruminants largely relies on the supply of nutrients, such as glucose, amino acids and fatty acids. To define the regulatory role of blood oxygen availability in regard to milk production, seventy-five healthy Guanzhong dairy goats with similar body weight, days in milk and parities were selected. For each animal, milk yield was recorded and milk sample was collected to determine compositions. Milk vein blood was collected to determine parameters including blood gas, physio-biochemistry and haematology. Another blood sample was prepared for transcriptome and RT-qPCR. Results showed that both pressure of oxygen (pO2) in the milk vein (positively) and numbers of neutrophils in mammary vein (negatively) were associated with milk yield of the animals. To learn the role of pO2 in blood cell functionality, twelve animals (six with higher yield (H-group) and six with lower yield (L-group)) from seventy-five goats were selected. Compared with animals in L-group, goats in H-group were higher in pO2 but lower in pCO2, lactate, lactate dehydrogenase activity and neutrophil abundance in milk vein, compared with L-group. The blood transcriptome analysis suggested that compared with L-group, animals in H-group were depressed in functionality including neutrophil activation and metabolic pathways including glycolysis, NF-κB and HIF-1. Our result revealed that lower milk production could be associated with neutrophil activation responding to low pO2 in the mammary vein. In the meantime, we highlighted the potential importance of blood oxygen as a milk yield regulator.

Yarı entansif şartlarda yetiştirilen İvesi ırkı koyunlarda süt verimi ve süt kalite özellikleri

This research was carried out to determine milk yield and milk quality parameters of Awassi sheep raised under semi-intensive conditions in Harran University Experimental Animal Research and Application Center. In the study, 2 and 3 years old, 46 heads of Awassi sheep were used as animal material. The care and feeding of the ewes were made in a way that the Animal Research and Application Center routinely applied. Average daily milk yield in Awassi sheep was determined as 1002.82±52.57 g. Lactation milk yield and lactation period were calculated as 168.10±8.44 kg and 166.10±2.11 days, respectively. In the study, the overall mean fat, protein, lactose and dry matter ratios were determined. % 6.27±0.10; 5.12±0.05; 4.81±0.05 and 17.44 ± 0.13 respectively. Somatic cell count and pH values in Awassi sheep milk were determined as 207.56±21.29 cell/ml and 6.29±0.03 respectively. L*, a* and b* values in sheep milk were determined as 72.69±0.16; -6.11±0.04 and 6.92±0.08. respectively. It was determined that the amount of butyric acid (C4:0), which is one of the short-chain fatty acids, was higher than the values reported for sheep milk in all groups examined in the study. As a result, it has been determined that there is a wide variation in milk yield in Awassi sheep. A rapid genetic improvement may be achieved by utilizing this variation.

Weighted Single-Step Genome-Wide Association Study Uncovers Known and Novel Candidate Genomic Regions for Milk Production Traits and Somatic Cell Score in Valle del Belice Dairy Sheep.

Simple SummaryMilk production is the most economically crucial dairy sheep trait and constitutes the major genetic enhancement purpose via selective breeding. Also, mastitis is one of the most frequently encountered diseases, having a significant impact on animal welfare, milk yield, and quality. The aim of this study was to identify genomic region(s) associated with the milk production traits and somatic cell score (SCS) in Valle del Belice sheep using single-step genome-wide association (ssGWA) and genotyping data from medium density SNP panels. We identified several genomic regions (OAR1, OAR2, OAR3, OAR4, OAR6, OAR9, and OAR25) and candidate genes implicated in milk production traits and SCS. Our findings offer new insights into the genetic basis of milk production traits and SCS in dairy sheep.The objective of this study was to uncover genomic regions explaining a substantial proportion of the genetic variance in milk production traits and somatic cell score in a Valle del Belice dairy sheep. Weighted single-step genome-wide association studies (WssGWAS) were conducted for milk yield (MY), fat yield (FY), fat percentage (FAT%), protein yield (PY), protein percentage (PROT%), and somatic cell score (SCS). In addition, our aim was also to identify candidate genes within genomic regions that explained the highest proportions of genetic variance. Overall, the full pedigree consists of 5534 animals, of which 1813 ewes had milk data (15,008 records), and 481 ewes were genotyped with a 50 K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array. The effects of markers and the genomic estimated breeding values (GEBV) of the animals were obtained by five iterations of WssGBLUP. We considered the top 10 genomic regions in terms of their explained genomic variants as candidate window regions for each trait. The results showed that top ranked genomic windows (1 Mb windows) explained 3.49, 4.04, 5.37, 4.09, 3.80, and 5.24% of the genetic variances for MY, FY, FAT%, PY, PROT%, and total SCS, respectively. Among the candidate genes found, some known associations were confirmed, while several novel candidate genes were also revealed, including PPARGC1A, LYPLA1, LEP, and MYH9 for MY; CACNA1C, PTPN1, ROBO2, CHRM3, and ERCC6 for FY and FAT%; PCSK5 and ANGPT1 for PY and PROT%; and IL26, IFNG, PEX26, NEGR1, LAP3, and MED28 for SCS. These findings increase our understanding of the genetic architecture of six examined traits and provide guidance for subsequent genetic improvement through genome selection.

Exploring dietary quality characteristics related to milk yield of crossbred cows in Ethiopian smallholder farms: a clustering and multivariate analysis approach.

The study, conducted on 70 smallholder dairy farms in Northern Ethiopia, aimed to evaluate whether variation in milk yield (in early and mid-lactation) of multiparous Holstein-Friesian crossbred cows is related to diet composition and quality. At early stage (1-120days in milk (DIM)), a total of 70 dairy farms were used, while at mid-lactation (121-240 DIM), 54 dairy farms continued to be part of the study. K-means clustering was applied to group the cows based on energy-corrected milk yield (ECMY) into three milk production farm clusters (MPFC): Low MPFC (5.7-9.3 L/day), medium MPFC (9.4-12.8 L/day), and high MPFC (12.9-17.6 L/day). The dry matter intake (DMI) of cows during early lactation for high MPFC and low MPFC was 14.1 and 11.2kg/day, respectively. The dietary proportion of crop residues in diets offered to crossbred cows tended to be lower in the high MPFC during early as well as in mid-lactation. Cows from the high MPFC consumed diets with higher (rumen degradable) protein levels both in early and in mid-lactation, while dietary fiber fractions and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) only differed in early lactation. Multiple regression models indicated that DMI (kg/day) in combination with either neutral detergent fiber, crude protein, or IVDMD (g/kg DM) explained about 25% of the variation in daily ECMY expressed relative to body weight (mL/kg). Hence, higher milk production is linked to both increased DMI and better quality of diets.

Genetic Parameter Estimation and Genome-Wide Association Study-Based Loci Identification of Milk-Related Traits in Chinese Holstein.

Accurately estimating the genetic parameters and revealing more genetic variants underlying milk production and quality are conducive to the genetic improvement of dairy cows. In this study, we estimate the genetic parameters of five milk-related traits of cows—namely, milk yield (MY), milk fat percentage (MFP), milk fat yield (MFY), milk protein percentage (MPP), and milk protein yield (MPY)—based on a random regression test-day model. A total of 95,375 test-day records of 9,834 cows in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River were used for the estimation. In addition, genome-wide association studies (GWASs) for these traits were conducted, based on adjusted phenotypes. The heritability, as well as the standard errors, of MY, MFP, MFY, MPP, and MPY during lactation ranged from 0.22 ± 0.02 to 0.31 ± 0.04, 0.06 ± 0.02 to 0.15 ± 0.03, 0.09 ± 0.02 to 0.28 ± 0.04, 0.07 ± 0.01 to 0.16 ± 0.03, and 0.14 ± 0.02 to 0.27 ± 0.03, respectively, and the genetic correlations between different days in milk (DIM) within lactations decreased as the time interval increased. Two, six, four, six, and three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected, which explained 5.44, 12.39, 8.89, 10.65, and 7.09% of the phenotypic variation in MY, MFP, MFY, MPP, and MPY, respectively. Ten Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways and 25 Gene Ontology terms were enriched by analyzing the nearest genes and genes within 200 kb of the detected SNPs. Moreover, 17 genes in the enrichment results that may play roles in milk production and quality were selected as candidates, including CAMK2G, WNT3A, WNT9A, PLCB4, SMAD9, PLA2G4A, ARF1, OPLAH, MGST1, CLIP1, DGAT1, PRMT6, VPS28, HSF1, MAF1, TMEM98, and F7. We hope that this study will provide useful information for in-depth understanding of the genetic architecture of milk production and quality traits, as well as contribute to the genomic selection work of dairy cows in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Adjustment Factors for Month of Calving, Age at Calving and Days in Milk for Holteins in Tunisia

Multiplicative adjustment factors for month of calving, age at calving and lactation length were computed for complete lactation records (n= 11’175) recorded between 2012 and 2017 from 6251 dairy cattle raised in 33 Holstein dairy herds. An animal model was used with fixed effects for herd-year-sector, month of calving and age at calving and random and the residual random error. The objectives of this study were: 1) to examine the effect of the non-genetic factors on the milk yield production, 2) to adjust milk yield for non-genetic sources of variation and 3) to examine the effect of milk yield adjustments on estimates of the genetic trend. Main results showed that month of calving, age at calving and lactation length were significant sources of variation for milk yield. Cows calving in the fall and early winter yielded 430 kg and 455 kg more milk than cows calving in spring and summer, respectively. Holsteins in Tunisia reached their maximum milk yield between 68 and 70 months of age. Average adjusted milk yield for days in milk, month and age of calving was 6621±2883 kg. An overall rate of increase in milk yield was found to be 22.68 kg/year over the 15 years period.

Genetic evaluation to design a reference cow population for the Holstein breed in Tunisia: a first step toward genomic selection

Context There is a large gap between developed and developing countries in the field of genetic evaluation of livestock animals. Introduction of genomic evaluation procedures and methods could contribute to reducing this gap. Aims The goal of this study was to select a reference cow population for the Holstein breed in Tunisia. Specific objectives were to update adjustments for non-genetic factors affecting milk yield, estimate genetic parameters for milk yield, and predict cow breeding values. Methods A BLUP animal model was used for 11 175 lactations recorded between 2012 and 2017 from 6251 dairy cattle raised in 33 Holstein dairy herds from three types of herds or production sectors. A pedigree file of 16 211 males and females was included in the genetic evaluation. Multiplicative adjustment factors were computed for age and month of calving, using adjusted 305 days in milk. Key results Month of calving, age at calving and farm ownership were significant sources of variation for milk yield. Cows calving in autumn and early winter (September–January) yielded more milk than those calving in spring (February–May) by 430 kg, and summer (June–August) by 455 kg. Holstein cows in Tunisia reached their maximum milk yield during the fourth lactation. Average adjusted milk yield for days in milk, month and age of calving was 6621 ± 2883 kg. Heritability estimates of adjusted milk yield were 0.14 ± 0.02 for all seven lactations and 0.16 ± 0.03 for the three first lactations. Phenotypic correlations among lactations were all positive, ranging from 0.25 to 0.43. On the basis of two main traditional designs (extreme yield and top accuracy), 1000 cows were selected to form the Tunisian female reference population. Conclusion The first step of genomic evaluation has been realised by forming a reference population from cows selected for adjusted milk yield production, based on their predicted breeding values and accuracies, using a BLUP animal model. Implication In the absence of progeny testing and sufficient proven sires, a cow reference population could represent the alternative for implementing genomic selection in developing countries.

Effect of Temperature-Humidity-Index on Milk Performances of Local Born Holstein Dairy Cows Under Saharan Climate

AbstractThe objective is to study the effect of heat stress on milk yield (MY) relative to milking records (n=18178) of native Holsteins (n=187), in the region of Ghardaia, according to periods of HS, using the temperature-humidity index (THI). With THI &gt;72 during 07 months in the study area, which significantly (P&lt;0.001) decrease the MY (-15.5% corresponding to 21.73 kg). Also, calving periods led to a significant drop (P &lt; 0.001) in overall MY (7030.35 kg) of the order of (-14.6%), and over the lactation length (353.43 d), which explains 41% of the variations in MY. In addition, the non-significant effect (P=0.212) of the lactation range on the increase in MY, moreover, the lactation length shows a non-significant (P = 0.108) decrease (-4.68%) during heat stress (HS). Furthermore, the significant effect (P &lt;0.001) of the interaction (Milking frequency × THI) on MY, when THI variates from &lt; 74 to &gt; 84, with regression of (-16.82% and -08.82%) of the MF (2X and 3X), respectively. Again, the NH cow is less sensitive to hyperthermia, so THI explains only 2% of the variation in MY levels. Thus, NH in arid regions have the ability to acclimatize to Saharan environmental conditions.

Influence of environmental factors and parity on milk yield dynamics in barn-housed dairy cattle

We investigated the effects of environmental factors on average daily milk yield and day-to-day variation in milk yield of barn-housed Scottish dairy cows milked with an automated milking system. An incomplete Wood gamma function was fitted to derive parameters describing the milk yield curve including initial milk yield, inclining slope, declining slope, peak milk yield, time of peak, persistency (time in which the cow maintains high yield beyond the peak), and predicted total lactation milk yield (PTLMY). Lactation curves were fitted using generalized linear mixed models incorporating the above parameters (initial milk yield, inclining and declining slopes) and both the indoor and outdoor weather variables (temperature, humidity, and temperature-humidity index) as fixed effects. There was a higher initial milk yield and PTLMY in multiparous cows, but the incline slope parameter and persistency were greatest in primiparous cows. Primiparous cows took 54 d longer to attain a peak yield (mean ± standard error) of 34.25 ± 0.58 kg than multiparous (47.3 ± 0.45 kg); however, multiparous cows yielded 2,209 kg more PTLMY. The best models incorporated 2-d lagged minimum temperature. However, effect of temperature was minimal (primiparous decreased milk yield by 0.006 kg/d and multiparous by 0.001 kg/d for each degree increase in temperature). Both primiparous and multiparous cows significantly decreased in day-to-day variation in milk yield as temperature increased (primiparous cows decreased 0.05 kg/d for every degree increase in 2-d lagged minimum temperature indoors, which was greater than the effect in multiparous cows of 0.008 kg/d). Though the model estimates for both indoor and outdoor were different, a similar pattern of the average daily milk yield and day-to-day variation in milk yield and milk yield's dependence on environmental factors was observed for both primiparous and multiparous cows. In Scotland, primiparous cows were more greatly affected by the 2-d lagged minimum temperature compared with multiparous cows. After peak lactation had been reached, primiparous and multiparous cows decreased milk yield as indoor and outdoor minimum temperature increased.

Factors contributing to milk yield variation among cows in a cow–calf contact system in early lactation

The conventional dairy production system involves separation of the cow and calf at around 24 h after birth. Due to public concerns regarding this early separation, a few farmers are taking up the cow–calf contact system. However, some farmers have cited great variation in milk yield delivered to the parlor by cows in this sytem, with this being detrimental because it leads to low farm returns. The main objective of this study was to determine the source of variation in milk delivered to the parlor among cows in a cow–calf contact system. The study examined milk yield records for the first 28 d of lactation for 110 fall- and spring-calving cows from a farm running a full-time cow–calf contact system to investigate factors leading to variation among cows in milk delivered to the parlor. We observed great individual variation in milk yield delivered to the parlor among cows, with the range between the highest and lowest average being 22 L/d. The sex of the calf had an effect on the average milk yield delivered to the parlor: cows with female calves had higher average milk yield (Wald = 5.61, df = 1). Additionally, the lactation number of the dam affected average milk yield delivered to the parlor, with cows in their third lactation and above having the highest milk yield average (Wald = 20.90, df = 2). From the results of this study, we conclude that sex of the calf and lactation number of the dam affect milk yield delivered to the milking parlor in a cow–calf contact system.

Genome-Wide Association Studies in Indian Buffalo Revealed Genomic Regions for Lactation and Fertility.

Murrah breed of buffalo is an excellent dairy germplasm known for its superior milk quality in terms of milk fat and solids-not-fat (SNF); however, it is often reported that Indian buffaloes had lower lactation and fertility potential compared to the non-native cattle of the country. Recent techniques, particularly the genome-wide association studies (GWAS), to identify genomic variations associated with lactation and fertility traits offer prospects for systematic improvement of buffalo. DNA samples were sequenced using the double-digestion restriction-associated DNA (RAD) tag genotyping-by-sequencing. The bioinformatics pipeline was standardized to call the variants, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) qualifying the stringent quality check measures were retained for GWAS. Over 38,000 SNPs were used to perform GWAS on the first two principal components of test-day records of milk yields, fat percentages, and SNF percentages, separately. GWAS was also performed on 305 days’ milk yield; lactation persistency was estimated through the rate of decline after attaining the peak yield method, along with three other standard methods; and breeding efficiency, post-partum breeding interval, and age at sexual maturity were considered fertility traits. Significant association of SNPs was observed for the first principal component, explaining the maximum proportion of variation in milk yield. Furthermore, some potential genomic regions were identified to have a potential role in regulating milk yield and fertility in Murrah. Identification of such genomic regions shall help in carrying out an early selection of high-yielding persistent Murrah buffaloes and, in the long run, would be helpful in shaping their future genetic improvement programs.

Associations among Mammary Ultrasound Measurements, Milk Yield of Non-Dairy Ewe Lambs and the Growth of Their Single Lambs.

This experiment was designed to examine the association between mammary ultrasound measurements and milk yield in ewe lambs and the accuracy of using mammary ultrasound measurements to predict single lamb growth rates to weaning. Mammary internal structures were measured in 45 single-bearing ewe lambs at day 110 of pregnancy, week three (W3), five (W5), and seven (W7) of lactation and at weaning (L69). The ewe lambs were milked once at W3, W5 and W7 and the single lambs were weighed at birth, W3, W5, W7, and L69. The predictions of milk yield were moderate, and the predictions of lamb growth were high to moderate, indicating that mammary ultrasound was more accurate in predicting lamb growth than milk yield. Further investigations are required to identify better indicators of milk yield in ewe lambs.Mammary cistern size was positively correlated with milk yield of mature dairy ewes, but the association in ewe lambs is unknown. This experiment aimed to examine the associations between mammary ultrasound measurements and the milk yield of ewe lambs at one year of age and to determine the accuracy of using maternal mammary ultrasound to predict single lamb growth rates. Single-bearing ewe lambs (n = 45) were randomly selected and 30 were milked once at weeks three (W3), five (W5), and seven (W7) of lactation. Mammary ultrasound scans were performed at day 110 of pregnancy, W3, W5, W7, and weaning (L69). Single lambs (n = 30) were weighed at birth and at each mammary scanning event. Udder measurements explained 26.8%, 21.4%, and 38.4% of the variation in milk yield at W3, W5 and W7, respectively, and 63.5% and 36.4% of the variation in single lamb growth to W3 and to L69. This ultrasound technique was more accurate in predicting single lamb growth to W3 than milk yield and may enable the identification of pregnant ewe lambs whose progeny would have greater growth rates. More research is needed to identify accurate indicators of superior milk yield and determine whether ultrasound could be used to select ewe lambs.
