Development of an FeII Complex Exhibiting Intermolecular Proton Shifting Coupled Spin Transition.

In this study, we investigated reversible intermolecular proton shifting (IPS) coupled with spin transition (ST) in a novel FeII complex. The host FeII complex and the guest carboxylic acid anion were connected by intermolecular hydrogen bonds (IHBs). We extended the intramolecular proton transfer coupled ST phenomenon to the intermolecular system. The dynamic phenomenon was confirmed by variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, neutron crystallography, and infrared spectroscopy. The mechanism of IPS was further validated using density functional theory calculations. The discovery of IPS-coupled ST in crystalline molecular materials provides good insights into fundamental processes and promotes the design of novel multifunctional materials with tunable properties for various applications, such as optoelectronics, information storage, and molecular devices.

0-D and 1-D Perovskite-like Hybrid Bismuth(III) Iodides.

Low-dimensional hybrid bismuth halide perovskites have recently emerged as a class of non-toxic alternative to lead perovskites with promising optoelectronic properties. Here, we report three hybrid bismuth(III)-iodides: 0-D (H2DAC)2Bi2I10 ⋅ 6H2O (H2DAC_Bi_I), 0-D (H2DAF)4Bi2I10 ⋅ 2I3 ⋅ 2I ⋅ 6H2O (H2DAF_Bi_I), and 1-D (H2DAP)BiI5 (H2DAP_Bi_I) (where H2DAC=trans-1,4-diammoniumcyclohexane; H2DAF=2,7-diammoniumfluorene and H2DAP=1,5-diammoniumpentane). Their synthesis, single-crystal X-ray structures, and photophysical properties are reported. The first two compounds comprise edge-sharing [Bi2I10]4- dimers, while the last compound has cis-corner-sharing 1-D chains of [BiI6]3- octahedra. Intercalation of triiodide (I3 -) and iodide (I-) ions enhance electronic coupling between the [Bi2I10]4- of H2DAF_Bi_I, leading to enhanced optical absorption, compared to H2DAC_Bi_I which lacks such intercalants. Furthermore, calorimetric and variable temperature X-ray diffraction measurements suggest a centrosymmetric to non-centrosymmetric phase transition (monoclinic P212121↔orthorhombic Pnma) of H2DAP_Bi_I at 448 K (in heating step) and at 443 K (in cooling step).

Jahn-Teller Distortions and Phase Transitions in LiNiO2: Insights from Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics and Variable-Temperature X-ray Diffraction.

The atomistic structure of lithium nickelate (LiNiO2), the parent compound of Ni-rich layered oxide cathodes for Li-ion batteries, continues to elude a comprehensive understanding. The common consensus is that the material exhibits local Jahn-Teller distortions that dynamically reorient, resulting in a time-averaged undistorted R3̅m structure. Through a combination of ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and variable-temperature X-ray diffraction (VT-XRD), we explore Jahn-Teller distortions in LiNiO2 as a function of temperature. Static Jahn-Teller distortions are observed at low temperatures (T < 250 K) via AIMD simulations, followed by a broad phase transition that occurs between 250 and 350 K, leading to a highly dynamic, displacive phase at high temperatures (T > 350 K), which does not show the four short and two long bonds characteristic of local Jahn-Teller distortions. These transitions are followed in the AIMD simulations via abrupt changes in the calculated pair distribution function and the bond-length distortion index and in X-ray diffraction via the monoclinic lattice parameter ratio, amon/bmon, and δ angle, the fit quality of an R3̅m-based structural refinement, and a peak sharpening of the diffraction peaks on heating, consistent with the loss of distorted domains. Between 250 and 350 K, a mixed-phase regime is found via the AIMD simulations where distorted and undistorted domains coexist. The repeated change between the distorted and undistorted states in this mixed-phase regime allows the Jahn-Teller long axes to change direction. These pseudorotations of the Ni-O long axes are a side effect of the onset of the displacive phase transition. Antisite defects, involving Li ions in the Ni layer and Ni ions in the Li layer, are found to pin the undistorted domains at low temperatures, impeding cooperative ordering at a longer length scale.

Phase Transition and Switchable Dielectric Properties of a Three-Dimensional Hydrogen-Bonding Framework Based on Cobalt (Ⅲ), o-Bromoaniline, and 18-Crown-6

The organic–inorganic hybrid compound, (o-BrAH)[H2Co(CN)6]0.5·(18-crown-6)0.5·H2O, was synthesized and characterized by variable-temperature X-ray diffraction, single-crystal diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and dielectric measurements. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed a three-dimensional cage-like structure formed through the hydrogen bonds of cobalt hexacyanide, supermolecular cations, and water molecules. Temperature variation triggered an abrupt change in the cage structure and simultaneously caused dynamic oscillation of the supramolecules within the framework of [Co(CN)6]3−, inducing a phase transition accompanied by a step-like change in the dielectric physical properties.

Enhanced PEBA composite membrane performance by solution-free melt coating for phenol pervaporation from aqueous solution

Solution-based membrane fabrication methods, which are widely used in the membrane industry, have a negative impact on the environment and fabrication effectiveness. In this study, a green solution-free melt coating method was proposed to rapidly fabricate a poly(ether-block-amide) copolymer (PEBA) composite membrane. Based on its melting point and viscosity, PEBA 1074 was chosen as a suitable membrane material for fabrication by solution coating and melt coating methods, which were compared by characterizations such as variable-temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction and nano-scratching test to reveal the differences in such as crystallinity etc. The separation performance of these membranes for the pervaporation of phenol from aqueous solutions under different operating conditions was evaluated. The results showed that the PEBA composite membrane fabricated by the melt coating method possessed the same separation factor as the corresponding freestanding membrane because the sol-gel transition was avoided, and a separation factor of 74 for the separation of 1.5 wt% phenol/water solution at 70 °C can be obtained due to high density and crystallinity even with a thickness of 11 μm, which is superior to previously reported results. This study provides an ecologically friendly and effective approach for the fabrication of thermoplastic polymer membranes, thereby promoting their industrial applications.

Molecular rotators anchored on a rod-like anionic coordination polymer adhered by charge-assisted hydrogen bonds.

On the basis of variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature/frequency dielectric analysis, variable-temperature solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations, here we present a new model of crystalline supramolecular rotor (i-PrNHMe2)[CdBr3], where a conformationally flexible near-spherical (i-PrNHMe2)+ cation functions as a rotator and a rod-like anionic coordination polymer {[CdBr3]-}∞ acts as the stator, and the adhesion of them is realized by charge-assisted hydrogen bonds.

A confinement-regulated (H3C-NH3)+ ion as a smallest dual-wheel rotator showing bisected rotation dynamics.

On the basis of variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, rotational energy barrier analysis, variable-temperature/frequency dielectric response, and molecular dynamics simulations, here we report a new crystalline supramolecular rotor (CH3NH3)(18-crown-6)[CuCl3], in which the (H3C-NH3)+ ion functions as a smallest dual-wheel rotator showing bisected rotation dynamics, while the host 18-crown-6 macrocycle behaves as a stator that is not strictly stationary. This study also provides a helpful insight into the dynamics of ubiquitous -CH3/-NH3 groups confined in organic or organic-inorganic hybrid solids.

Alkali Metal Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Compounds with Different Crystal Dimensions Show Phase-Transition, Dielectric, and SHG Properties Based on a Quasi-Spherical Amine (1S,4S)-2,5-Diazabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane.

Reactions of a chiral and quasi-spherical molecule [1S,4S-2,5-2.2.1-H2dabch]I2 (1) with alkali metal halide MX (M = Na, K, Cs; X = Cl, Br) at room temperature produced a series of organic-inorganic hybrid (OIH) materials [1S,4S-2,5-2.2.1-H2dabch]NaBr3 (2), [1S,4S-2,5-2.2.1-H2dabch]CsCl3·H2O (3) and [1S,4S-2,5-2.2.1-H2dabch]KBr3·H2O (4). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the organic-inorganic framework structures comprised of the templating ligand and alkali metal halides (NaBr, CsCl, KBr) displayed dimensions spanning from one-dimensional (1D) to three-dimensional (3D). Moreover, the results of both differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dielectric measurements demonstrated that compounds 1-4 displayed reversible, high-temperature phase transitions and noticeable dielectric anomalies. In addition, the temperature-dependent second harmonic generation (SHG) results revealed crystals 1 and 3 can switch from the SHG-ON to the SHG-OFF state, which was proved by the variable-temperature X-ray diffraction. This research aims to streamline the exploration of multifunctional second harmonic generation (SHG) and dielectric materials that have been synthesized using chiral ligands and alkali metals. This will provide researchers with enhanced opportunities to delve further into this specific research domain.

Nanoscale friction of high entropy alloy sulfide thin films in comparison with molybdenum disulfide

We present nanoscale friction measurements performed on sputter-deposited high entropy alloy (HEA) sulfide thin films [(VNbTaMoW)S2] via atomic force microscopy. The results reveal (i) the influence of deposition time on the film morphology and (ii) the presence of isolated areas of low friction on film surfaces. We compare the friction results on HEA sulfide thin films with those on a prototypical solid lubricant, sputter-deposited molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and find that they are superior in terms of lubricative performance. Variable temperature x-ray diffraction, performed up to 973 K, reveals that HEA sulfide thin films exhibit improved oxidation resistance when compared with MoS2 films. Combined, our results show that HEA sulfide thin films have considerable potential as oxidation-resistant solid lubricant coatings.

A Steric-Repulsion-Driven Clutch Stack of Triaryltriazines: Correlated Molecular Rotations and a Thermoresponsive Gearshift in the Crystalline Solid.

We report that a newly developed type of triaryltriazine rotor, which bears bulky silyl moieties on the para position of its peripheral phenylene groups, forms a columnar stacked clutch structure in the crystalline phase. The phenylene units of the crystalline rotors display two different and interconvertible correlated molecular motions. It is possible to switch between these intermolecular geared rotational motions via a thermally induced crystal-to-crystal phase transition. Variable-temperature solid-state 2H NMR measurements and X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the crystalline rotor is characterized by a vertically stacked columnar structure upon introducing a bulky Si moiety with bent geometry as the stator. The structure exhibits correlated flapping motions via a combination of 85° and ca. 95° rotations between 295 and 348 K, concurrent with a negative entropy change (ΔS‡ = -23 ± 0.3 cal mol-1 K-1). Interestingly, heating the crystal beyond 348 K induces an anisotropic expansion of the column and lowers the steric congestion between the adjacent rotators, thus altering the correlated motions from a flapping motion to a correlated 2-fold 180° rotation with a lower entropic penalty (ΔS‡ = -14 ± 0.5 cal mol-1 K-1). The obtained results of our study suggest that the intermolecular stacking of the C3-symmetric rotator driven by the steric repulsion of the bulky stator represents a promising strategy for producing various correlated molecular motions in the crystalline phase. Moreover, direct and reversible modulation of the intermolecularly correlated rotation is achieved via a thermally induced crystal-to-crystal phase transition, which operates as a gearshift function at the molecular level.

A hybrid ionic liquid crystal comprising imidazolium surfactant-graphene oxide

ABSTRACT To produce graphene oxide liquid crystal composites with better controllability, imidazolium surfactant with biphenyl mesogenic core (CBphCM) has been synthesised and used to modify the negatively charged surface of graphene oxide (GO) to obtain a hybrid ionic liquid crystal (CBphCM-GO). The process of GO and CBphCM recombination was monitored by various experimental techniques such as FT-IR, Uv-vis, Raman and XPS. The experimental results indicated that the C=O bonds on GO sheets are all reduced and C−O bonds are partially reduced due to the imidazolium units being electrically active and nitrogen-rich, and the presence of the N−O bonds indicates that a new hybrid is formed between CBphCM and GO. The recombination destroys the electrostatic repulsion balance among the GO lattices, and the CBphCM-GO is observed a fluffy appearance by TEM. The liquid crystal properties of CBphCM and CBphCM-GO were investigated by DSC, polarised optical microscopy (POM) and variable temperature X-ray diffraction, respectively. As an ionic liquid crystal, CBphCM has SmA as well as the rare SmC phases exhibits de Vries-like behaviour with a layer shrinkage. The liquid crystal properties of CBphCM-GO are derived from CBphCM, and the layer shrinkage behaviour from SmA to SmC phase has also been observed.

Desolvation-induced magnetic switching from single-ion magnetism to spin-crossover in a halogen-functionalized cobalt(II) complex

The switching between spin-crossover (SCO) and single-ion magnet (SIM) are fascinating because the process provides potential in-depth understating of different bistability. Herein, we present a rare example of the desolvation-induced magnetic switching from single-ion magnetism to SCO between a halogen-functionalized cobalt(II) complex, [Co(Brphtpy)2](PF6)2·2MeOH (Brphtpy = 4′-(4-Bromophenyl)-2,2′:6′,2′'-terpyridine, 1·2MeOH) and its desolvated material of [Co(Brphtpy)2](PF6)2 (1). The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility and variable-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction results show a high spin state of the Co(II) ions in 1·2MeOH. At lower temperature, frequency- and temperature-dependent slow magnetic relaxation behaviors were evidenced under an applied dc field of 1000Oe, originating from the easy-plane magnetic anisotropy (D=43.5 cm−1) of Co(II) ions. After the release of methanol molecules, interestingly, the desovated material 1 display a complete and cooperative two-step spin transitions with transition temperatures being 350 and 125K. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements support the stepwise SCO behavior and reveal the related ΔH and ΔS.

Direct visual observation of pedal motion-dependent flexibility of single covalent organic frameworks

Flexible covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been studied for applications containing sorption, selective separation, and catalysis. How to correlate the microscopic structure with flexibility in COFs is a great challenge. Herein, we visually track the flexible deformation behaviors of single COF-300 and COF-300-AR particles in response to solvent vapour guests with dark-field microscopy (DFM) in an in operando manner. COF-300-AR with freely-rotating C-N single bonds are synthesized by the reduction of imine-based COF-300 consisting of rigid C=N double bonds without changing topological structure and crystallinity. Unexpectedly, we observe that the flexible deformation of COF-300 is extremely higher than that of COF-300-AR despite it bears many C-N single bonds, clearly illustrating the apparent flexibility decrease of COF-300 after reduction. The high spatiotemporal resolution of DFM enables the finding of inter-particle variations of the flexibility among COF-300 crystals. Experimental characterizations by variable-temperature X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy as well as theoretical calculations demonstrate that the flexible deformation of COF-300 is ascribed to the pedal motion around rigid C=N double bonds. These observations provide new insights into COF flexibility.

High-k Solution-Processed Barium Titanate/Polysiloxane Nanocomposite for Low-Temperature Ferroelectric Thin-Film Transistors.

Ferroelectric nanoparticles have attracted much attention for numerous electronic applications owing to their nanoscale structure and size-dependent behavior. Barium titanate (BTO) nanoparticles with two different sizes (20 and 100 nm) were synthesized and mixed with a polysiloxane (PSX) polymer forming a nanocomposite solution for high-k nanodielectric films. Transition from the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase of BTO with different nanoparticle dimensions was evaluated through variable-temperature X-ray diffraction measurement accompanied by electrical analysis using capacitor structures. A symmetric single 200 peak was constantly detected at different measurement temperatures for the 20 nm BTO sample, marking a stable cubic crystal structure. 100 nm BTO on the other hand shows splitting of 200/002 peaks correlating to a tetragonal crystal form which further merged, thus forming a single 200 peak at higher temperatures. Smaller BTO dimension exhibits clockwise hysteresis in capacitance-voltage measurement and correlates to a cubic crystal structure which possesses paraelectric properties. Bigger BTO dimension in contrast, demonstrates counterclockwise hysteresis owing to their tetragonal crystal form. Through further Rietveld refinement analysis, we found that the tetragonality (c/a) of 100 nm BTO decreases at a higher temperature which narrows the hysteresis window. A wider hysteresis window was observed when utilizing 100 nm BTO compared to 20 nm BTO even at a lower loading ratio. The present findings imply different hysteresis mechanisms for BTO nanoparticles with varying dimensions which is crucial in understanding the role of how the BTO size tunes the crystal structures for integration in thin-film transistor devices.

Switching On/Off of a Solvent Coordination in a Au(I)-Pb(II) Complex: High Pressure and Temperature as External Stimuli.

The benzonitrile solvate {[{Au(C6F5)2}2{Pb(terpy)}]·NCPh}n (1) (terpy = 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine) displays reversible reorientation and coordination of the benzonitrile molecule to lead upon external stimuli. High-pressure X-ray diffraction studies between 0 and 2.1 GPa reveal a 100% of conversion without loss of symmetry, which is totally reversible upon decompression. By variable-temperature X-ray diffraction studies between 100 and 285 K, a partial coordination is achieved.

Enantioenriched Boron C,N-Chelates via Chirality Transfer.

Molecules stereogenic only at tetrahedral boron atoms show great promise for applications, for example as chiroptical materials, but are scarcely investigated due to their synthetic challenge. Hence, this study reports a two-step synthesis of enantioenriched boron C,N-chelates. First, the diastereoselective complexation of alkyl/aryl borinates with chiral aminoalcohols furnished boron stereogenic heterocycles in up to 86 % yield and d.r. >98 : 2. Treatment of these O,N-complexes with chelate nucleophiles was surmised to transfer the stereoinformation via the ate-complex into the C,N-products. This chirality transfer succeeded by substitution of the O,N-chelates with lithiated phenyl pyridine to give boron stereogenic C,N-chelates in up to 84 % yield and e.r. up to 97 : 3. The chiral aminoalcohol ligands could be recovered after isolation of the C,N-chelates. The chirality transfer tolerated alkyl, alkynyl and (hetero-)aryl moieties at boron and could be further extended by post-modification: transformations such as catalytic hydrogenations or sequential deprotonation/electrophilic trapping were feasible while maintaining the stereochemical integrity of the C,N-chelates. Structural aspects of the boron chelates were studied by variable temperature NMR and X-ray diffraction.

Unveiling the coupling effect of strain behavior and electro-optic property in nanodisordered KTN crystal

High-performance electro-optic (EO) crystals play a key role in optical communication and information processing. Potassium tantalate niobate (KTa1−xNbxO3, KTN) crystals advantageously have an ultrahigh quadratic electro-optic (QEO) coefficient and a wide transparency range, and their excellent QEO properties are closely related to polar nanoregion (PNR)-related polar units. Owing to the PNR-related polar units, KTN crystals have excellent strain properties, which makes them a potential multifunctional material. However, the relationship between strain behavior and QEO properties in nanodisordered KTN crystals has rarely been reported. The promotion of EO activity by regulating the PNRs-related polar units still needs to be studied. Here, we study the coupling effect of strain behavior and QEO properties in KTN crystals. The QEO, elastic-optic, electrostrictive, and elastic coefficients of KTN crystals are characterized, and the strain–QEO property coupling relation is established. The results show that the strain-induced QEO response significantly affects the QEO properties. The existence and response of PNRs near ferroelectric–paraelectric phase transition are demonstrated by variable-temperature x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Combined with the heating and cooling QEO response time tests, the response of PNRs is shown to be an important reason for the enhancement of the QEO response of KTN crystals through the promotion of the strain-induced QEO response. This study provides guidance for clarifying the origin of the QEO properties of nanodisordered KTN crystals and is beneficial for further improving the EO properties of perovskite crystals by manipulating the strain behavior.

Thermal behavior of borax, Na2B4O5(OH)4·8H2O

Abstract Globally, borax is one of the most important borate minerals, both industrially and from a technological viewpoint. Despite its importance, there have been only a few reports on the structural changes of borax upon heating. In this study, we have investigated the thermal behavior and structural characteristics of borax using thermal analysis, in situ high-temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction, in situ variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and quantum chemical calculations. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve showed a large endothermic peak at 349 K corresponding to the dehydration reaction of borax. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern remained almost unchanged up to 353 K. Above 363 K, the XRD peaks gradually became less intense until they disappeared at 403 K. The unit-cell volume continuously increased with increasing temperature and became constant just before its phase transition to tincalconite. The volumetric thermal expansion coefficient between 113 and 323 K was 7.84 × 10–5 K–1. The a and c lattice parameters exhibited a slight increase trend with increasing temperature, whereas the b lattice parameter increased significantly. Therefore, the thermal expansibilities followed the order b/b0 &amp;gt;&amp;gt; c/c0 &amp;gt; a/a0. The increasing b lattice parameter was closely related to the elongation of the O4···H7B hydrogen-bond interaction along the b-axis. Na-O bond lengths were isotropically expanded with increasing temperature, whereas the B-O bond lengths and angles remained unchanged even after the phase transition to tincalconite. Molecular orbital calculations revealed that an electron cloud shared by two borate tetrahedra led to the formation of a large electron cloud distribution over the B4O5(OH)4 cluster. The intramolecular interactions with substantial covalent character made the cluster quite rigid. The existence of borate minerals containing the B4O5(OH)4 clusters in their structure evidenced the presence of moderately acidic or alkaline water, wherein the borate minerals grew via the incorporation of B4O5(OH)4 clusters. Our results indicate that the connection geometry of the fundamental building block consisting of Bφ3 triangles and Bφ4 tetrahedra (φ: O2–, OH–) can potentially be used as a palaeoenvironmental indicator.

Fluorosumanenes as building blocks for organic crystalline dielectrics

Abstract Organic crystalline dielectric materials are attractive target in the field of materials chemistry. In their designing strategy, the molecular motion induced by the external dielectric field is required to maximize the polarization effect in the materials to realize a large dielectric constant. Especially, the molecular motion of curved-π aromatics such as C60 and their supramolecular complexes are the known to show characteristic smoothness in the solid state. In this context, we focused on the in-plane motion of the one of the representative buckybowl, sumanene (Sum) in its curve-to-curve-contacted columnar structure as the new platform of the motion for the emergence of dielectric response. The newly designed and synthesized fluorinated sumanene, 1,1-difluorosumanene (F2-Sum), which possesses two fluorine atoms on the same benzylic carbon of pristine sumanene showed a large dipole moment along the in-plane direction. Thermal analyses, variable temperature X-ray diffraction and IR measurements indicated the presence of in-plane motion of F2-Sum although no clear phase transition was involved. This thermal property of F2-Sum realized an anisotropic dielectric response with a Debye-type dielectric relaxation in the single crystalline state. Further trials to form the solid solution of Sum and F2-Sum in various mixing ratio realized the tuning of the dielectric property.

Electrochemical and Structural Investigation of ReO3.

The structural evolution with alkali ion insertion, and the subsequent thermal evolution of the alkali-ion inserted ReO3 electrodes are shown by employing in situ and ex situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD). During Na and K insertion, there is a combination of intercalation into ReO3 and a two-phase reaction. Interestingly in the case of Li insertion, a more complex evolution is noted, which suggests a conversion reaction takes place at deep discharge (insertion). Following these ion insertion studies, extracted electrodes at various states of discharge (kinetically determined) were examined with variable temperature XRD. The thermal evolution of the Ax ReO3 phases, where A=Li, Na, or K, are significantly modified from the parent ReO3 thermal evolution. This shows the impact of alkali-ion insertion on the thermal properties of ReO3 .
