Development of an FeII Complex Exhibiting Intermolecular Proton Shifting Coupled Spin Transition.

In this study, we investigated reversible intermolecular proton shifting (IPS) coupled with spin transition (ST) in a novel FeII complex. The host FeII complex and the guest carboxylic acid anion were connected by intermolecular hydrogen bonds (IHBs). We extended the intramolecular proton transfer coupled ST phenomenon to the intermolecular system. The dynamic phenomenon was confirmed by variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, neutron crystallography, and infrared spectroscopy. The mechanism of IPS was further validated using density functional theory calculations. The discovery of IPS-coupled ST in crystalline molecular materials provides good insights into fundamental processes and promotes the design of novel multifunctional materials with tunable properties for various applications, such as optoelectronics, information storage, and molecular devices.

Supramolecular assembly, structure, magnetic property, and proton conductivity of a nickel(II) hydrogen-bonded organosulfonate framework

A three-dimensional nickel(II) hydrogen-bonded organic framework (NiHOF), formulated as [Ni(H2O)2(EtOH)2(MeCN)2][nds] (NiHOF-HGNU-2, H2nds = 1,5-Naphthalenedisulfonic acid, HGNU = Huanggang Normal University), was synthesized and magnetically and electrically characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis revealed that extensive hydrogen bonding interactions formed between the [Ni(H2O)(EtOH)(MeCN)]2+cations and organodisulfonate anions nds2−, leading to a highly hydrogen-bonded network. Variable-temperature SC-XRD and thermogravimetric analysis both reveal the crystalline sample of NiHOF-HGNU-2 can be thermally stable up to 400 K. Magnetic investigations reveal the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (D = -9.87 cm−1) of the distorted octahedral Ni2+ ions of NiHOF-HGNU-2 without slow magnetic relaxation. Alternating current impedance spectroscopy indicate NiHOF-HGNU-2 exhibits temperature- and humidity-dependent proton conduction behavior with the highest measured conductivity reaching 1.15 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 85 °C and 98 % relative humidity, suggesting a supramolecular proton conductor of the NiHOF-HGNU-2. The forgoing results not only provide a new Ni-based proton conductor but also an organodisulfonate strategy for building supramolecular proton-conducting materials.

Molecular rotators anchored on a rod-like anionic coordination polymer adhered by charge-assisted hydrogen bonds.

On the basis of variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature/frequency dielectric analysis, variable-temperature solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations, here we present a new model of crystalline supramolecular rotor (i-PrNHMe2)[CdBr3], where a conformationally flexible near-spherical (i-PrNHMe2)+ cation functions as a rotator and a rod-like anionic coordination polymer {[CdBr3]-}∞ acts as the stator, and the adhesion of them is realized by charge-assisted hydrogen bonds.

A confinement-regulated (H3C-NH3)+ ion as a smallest dual-wheel rotator showing bisected rotation dynamics.

On the basis of variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, rotational energy barrier analysis, variable-temperature/frequency dielectric response, and molecular dynamics simulations, here we report a new crystalline supramolecular rotor (CH3NH3)(18-crown-6)[CuCl3], in which the (H3C-NH3)+ ion functions as a smallest dual-wheel rotator showing bisected rotation dynamics, while the host 18-crown-6 macrocycle behaves as a stator that is not strictly stationary. This study also provides a helpful insight into the dynamics of ubiquitous -CH3/-NH3 groups confined in organic or organic-inorganic hybrid solids.

Desolvation-induced magnetic switching from single-ion magnetism to spin-crossover in a halogen-functionalized cobalt(II) complex

The switching between spin-crossover (SCO) and single-ion magnet (SIM) are fascinating because the process provides potential in-depth understating of different bistability. Herein, we present a rare example of the desolvation-induced magnetic switching from single-ion magnetism to SCO between a halogen-functionalized cobalt(II) complex, [Co(Brphtpy)2](PF6)2·2MeOH (Brphtpy = 4′-(4-Bromophenyl)-2,2′:6′,2′'-terpyridine, 1·2MeOH) and its desolvated material of [Co(Brphtpy)2](PF6)2 (1). The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility and variable-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction results show a high spin state of the Co(II) ions in 1·2MeOH. At lower temperature, frequency- and temperature-dependent slow magnetic relaxation behaviors were evidenced under an applied dc field of 1000Oe, originating from the easy-plane magnetic anisotropy (D=43.5 cm−1) of Co(II) ions. After the release of methanol molecules, interestingly, the desovated material 1 display a complete and cooperative two-step spin transitions with transition temperatures being 350 and 125K. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements support the stepwise SCO behavior and reveal the related ΔH and ΔS.

(Invited) Dynamics of Fullerenes Visualized with Variable Temperature Single-Crystal X-Ray Diffraction

The dynamics of fullerenes are fundamentally interesting. Variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction is a powerful tool to view the temperature-driven dynamics of fullerene molecules in the crystal lattice because fullerene crystals present fruitful dynamics information in the widely accessible liquid nitrogen cryostats temperature range (90 K - room temperature). Recently, we succeeded in the visualization of the temperature-driven circular movement of Dy2 inside a benzyl-functionalized C80 cage in its solvate crystal.1 The temperature-driven dynamics of typical fullerene/nickel octaethylporphyrin (NiOEP) co-crystals presented the rather static behaviour of porphyrin molecules, and strong libration of the fullerene cages (C60 and C80) in the temperature range of 100-280 K. While the M3N clusters (M3N = Ho2LuN, Lu3N or Sc3N) inside C80 cage show intriguing temperature-driven dynamics with subtle metal atom size/mass effects.2-3 Sc3N@C70 rotation in the co-crystal with NiOEP induced a phase transition which was visualized with variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction.4 In this contribution, the details of the recently observed temperature-dependent dynamics of fullerene molecules in the crystal lattice will be discussed. Metalo Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks Self-Assembled by Charge-Assisted Synthons for Ultrahigh Proton Conduction

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have been well recognized for constructing solid-state proton-conducting materials due to their inherent well-defined H-bonded networks; however, the design and synthesis of stable HOFs showing ultrahigh superprotonic conductivity is still challenging. Herein, we reported a facile and effective synthetic strategy to build high proton-conducting metalo hydrogen-bonded organic–inorganic frameworks (MHOFs) through charge-assisted inorganic and organic synthons. The supramolecular self-assembly of simple metal salts and tetra-carboxylic acids gives rise to two hydrogen-bonded frameworks, [M(H2O)6][H2tcba] (M = Zn2+, Ni2+; H4tcba = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid). X-ray crystallography and gas adsorption confirmed the nonporous nature of the HOIFs. Variable-temperature single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction experiments reveal the thermal and water stability of the supramolecular structures sustained by exclusively charge-assisted hydrogen bonds. The high density of carboxylic acid groups and coordinated water molecules provide ample protons and hydrophilic environments for efficient proton transport; therefore, variable-temperature and -humidity electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that MHOFs are good supramolecular proton conductors with conductivities up to 1.1 × 10–2 and 2.1 × 10–2 S·cm–1 for 1 and 2, respectively, at 80 °C under 97% RH. Our study demonstrates great potential of charge-assisted inorganic and organic synthons in the design and construction of proton-conducting HOIFs.

Thermal behavior of borax, Na2B4O5(OH)4·8H2O

Abstract Globally, borax is one of the most important borate minerals, both industrially and from a technological viewpoint. Despite its importance, there have been only a few reports on the structural changes of borax upon heating. In this study, we have investigated the thermal behavior and structural characteristics of borax using thermal analysis, in situ high-temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction, in situ variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and quantum chemical calculations. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve showed a large endothermic peak at 349 K corresponding to the dehydration reaction of borax. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern remained almost unchanged up to 353 K. Above 363 K, the XRD peaks gradually became less intense until they disappeared at 403 K. The unit-cell volume continuously increased with increasing temperature and became constant just before its phase transition to tincalconite. The volumetric thermal expansion coefficient between 113 and 323 K was 7.84 × 10–5 K–1. The a and c lattice parameters exhibited a slight increase trend with increasing temperature, whereas the b lattice parameter increased significantly. Therefore, the thermal expansibilities followed the order b/b0 >> c/c0 > a/a0. The increasing b lattice parameter was closely related to the elongation of the O4···H7B hydrogen-bond interaction along the b-axis. Na-O bond lengths were isotropically expanded with increasing temperature, whereas the B-O bond lengths and angles remained unchanged even after the phase transition to tincalconite. Molecular orbital calculations revealed that an electron cloud shared by two borate tetrahedra led to the formation of a large electron cloud distribution over the B4O5(OH)4 cluster. The intramolecular interactions with substantial covalent character made the cluster quite rigid. The existence of borate minerals containing the B4O5(OH)4 clusters in their structure evidenced the presence of moderately acidic or alkaline water, wherein the borate minerals grew via the incorporation of B4O5(OH)4 clusters. Our results indicate that the connection geometry of the fundamental building block consisting of Bφ3 triangles and Bφ4 tetrahedra (φ: O2–, OH–) can potentially be used as a palaeoenvironmental indicator.

Monitoring the Activation of Open Metal Sites in [FexM3-x(μ3-O)] Cluster-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks by Single-Crystal X-ray Diffraction.

While trinuclear [FexM3-x(μ3-O)] cluster-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have found wide applications in gas storage and catalysis, it is still challenging to identify the structure of open metal sites obtained through proper activations and understand their influence on the adsorption and catalytic properties. Herein, we use in situ variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction to monitor the structural evolution of [FexM3-x(μ3-O)]-based MOFs (PCN-250, M = Ni2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Mg2+) upon thermal activation and provide the snapshots of metal sites at different temperatures. The exposure of open Fe3+ sites was observed along with the transformation of Fe3+ coordination geometries from octahedron to square pyramid. Furthermore, the effect of divalent metals in heterometallic PCN-250 was studied for the purpose of reducing the activation temperature and increasing the number of open metal sites. The metal site structures were corroborated by X-ray absorption and infrared spectroscopy. These results will not only guide the pretreatment of [FexM3-x(μ3-O)]-based MOFs but also corroborate spectral and computational studies on these materials.

Supramolecular Tuning of Spin Crossover Properties in Isostructural Cocrystal Solvates

In order to improve strategies for the design of spin-crossover materials, it is necessary to develop and understand structure–property relationships, and this is best achieved by obtaining isostructural materials. In this work we synthesized a series of four isostructural cocrystal solvates using the [Fe(3-bpp)2][A]2 complex and the 2,2-dipyridyl disulfide coformer in methanol and ethanol (A = BF4– or PF6–). The spin-crossover properties of the materials were determined by variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction. They show the same SCO behavior but with shifted spin-crossover temperatures, which has been related to the hydrogen bond basicity, pKBHX of the anions, and solvents present. This relationship between hydrogen bond basicity and the spin-crossover transition temperature offers a design strategy for the supramolecular tuning of spin-crossover properties in specific isostructural materials.

Dynamics of Organic Cations in Switchable Quinuclidinium Metal Chloride Dielectrics

The synthesis and structure of a series of quinuclidinium-based organic–inorganic hybrids of Q2CuCl4, Q2CoCl4, and Q4Pb3Cl10 are reported (Q = quinuclidinium, C7H13NH+). The dynamic disorder observed in the structure of quinuclidinium metal chlorides was investigated using variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, Raman, NMR, and dielectric spectroscopy. The crystals undergo phase transitions (PTs) where an order–disorder process takes place. However, it is assumed that in the case of Q2CoCl4 and Q2CuCl4, the reorientation of Q cations is a major force driving PT, while in Q4Pb3Cl10, the reorientation of inorganic ions (Pb–Cl moieties) is at least equally important. All three hybrid compounds exhibit switchable and tunable properties of the dielectric function between two stable ON/OFF states. The magnetic properties were also investigated over a wide temperature range by measuring the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization as a function of temperature and external magnetic field, which allowed us to demonstrate the competition between the paramagnetic and diamagnetic signals in these compounds. The dynamics probed by NMR has shown a nonequivalence of Q cations in all studied compounds.

Spin-state switching: chemical modulation and the impact of intermolecular interactions in manganese(III) complexes.

A series of mononuclear manganese(III) complexes [Mn(X-sal2-323)](ReO4) (X = 5 Cl, 1; X = 5 Br, 2; X = 3,5 Cl, 3; X = 3,5 Br, 4; and X = 5 NO2, 5), containing hexadentate ligands prepared using the condensation of N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)ethylenediamine and 5- or 3,5-substituted salicylaldehyde, has been synthesized. Variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical analyses, and theoretical calculations have been used to explore the role of various ligand substituents in the spin-state switching behavior of the prepared manganese(III) complexes. All five complexes consist of an analogous distorted octahedral monocationic MnN4O2 surrounding offered by the flexible hexadentate ligand and ReO4- as the counter anion. However, a disordered water molecule was detected in complex 4. Complexes 1 (X = 5 Cl) and 5 (X = 5 NO2) show gradual and complete spin-state switching between the high-spin (HS) (S = 2) and the low-spin (LS) (S = 1) state with T1/2 values of 146 and 115 K respectively, while an abrupt and complete transition at 95 K was observed for complex 2 (X = 5 Br). Alternatively, complex 3 (X = 3, 5 Cl) exhibits an incomplete and sharp transition between the HS and LS states at 104 K, while complex 4 (X = 3, 5 Br) (desolvated) remains almost LS up to 300 K and then displays gradual and incomplete SCO at a higher temperature. The nature of the spin-state switch and transition temperature suggest that the structural effect (cooperativity) plays a more significant role in comparison with the electronic effect coming from various substituents (Cl, Br, and NO2), which is further supported by the detailed structural, electrochemical, and theoretical studies.

Impact of Counteranion on Reversible Spin-State Switching in a Series of Cobalt(II) Complexes Containing a Redox-Active Ethylenedioxythiophene-Based Terpyridine Ligand.

The self-assembly of a redox-active ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT)-terpyridine-based tridentate ligand and cobalt(II) unit with different counteranions has led to a series of new cobalt(II) complexes [Co(L)2](X)2 (X = BF4 (1), ClO4 (2), and BPh4 (3)) (L = 4'-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine). The impact of various counteranions on stabilization and spin-state switching of the cobalt(II) center was explored through detailed magneto-structural investigation using variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical studies. All three complexes 1-3 consisted of an isostructural dicationic distorted octahedral CoN6 coordination environment offered by the two L ligands in a bis-meridional fashion and BF4-, ClO4-, and BPh4- as a counteranion, respectively. Complex 2 with ClO4- counteranion showed a reversible, gradual, and nearly complete spin-state switching between low-spin (LS) (S = 1/2) and high-spin (HS) (S = 3/2) states, while an incomplete spin-state switching behavior was observed for complexes 1 (BF4-) and 3 (BPh4-) in the measured temperature range of 350-2 K. The non-covalent cation-anion interactions played a significant role in stabilizing the spin-state in 1-3. Additionally, complexes 1-3 also exhibited interesting redox-stimuli-based reversible paramagnetic HS cobalt(II) (S = 3/2) to diamagnetic LS cobalt(III) (S = 0) conversion, offering an alternate way to switch the magnetic properties.

Mn-CUK-1: A Flexible MOF for SO2, H2O, and H2S Capture.

The environmentally benign metal-organic framework (MOF) CUK-1 based on 2,4-pyridine dicarboxylate has been prepared for the first time using Mn(II) as the inorganic node and water as the only solvent. Mn-CUK-1 shows reversible and efficient capture of H2O, SO2, and H2S. Compared to previously studied Co(II) and Mg(II) versions of the same MOF, Mn-CUK-1 also exhibited unique temperature-induced structural flexibility due to organic linker torsion, as detailed by variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Owing to this inherent solid-state flexibility, Mn-CUK-1 showed stepwise adsorption for polar gases, which induce structural deformations upon adsorption, while the nonpolar guest adsorbates were reversibly sorbed in a more classical manner. Notably, Mn-CUK-1 demonstrates the highest reported H2S capacity-to-surface area ratio among MOFs that are chemically stable toward this reactive acidic molecule. Moreover, Mn-CUK-1 displays exceptional structural stability in the presence of high relative humidity and corrosive gases and shows soft crystalline behavior triggered by changes in both the adsorption temperature and guest molecule identity.

Direct Observation of Modulated Radical Spin States in Metal-Organic Frameworks by Controlled Flexibility.

Owing to their switchable spin states and dynamic electronic character, organic-based radical species have been invoked in phenomena unique to a variety of fields. When incorporated in solid state materials, generation of organic radicals proves challenging due to aggregation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidates for immobilization and stabilization of organic radicals because of the tunable spatial arrangement of organic linkers and metal nodes, which sequesters the reactive species. Herein, a flexible, redox-active tetracarboxylic acid linker bearing two imidazole units was chosen to construct a new Zr6-MOF, NU-910, with scu topology. By exploiting the structural flexibility of NU-910, we successfully modulate the dynamics between an isolated organic radical species and an organic radical π-dimer species in the MOF system. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that through solvent exchange from N,N-diethylformamide to acetone, NU-910 undergoes a structural contraction with interlinker distances decreasing from 8.32 Å to 3.20 Å at 100 K. Organic radical species on the bridging linkers are generated via UV light irradiation. Direct observation of temperature-induced spin switches from an isolated radical species to a magnetically silent radical π-dimer in NU-910 after irradiation in the solid state was achieved via variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction and variable-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations further substantiated the formation of a radical cation π-dimer upon irradiation. This work demonstrates the potential of using flexible MOFs as a platform to modulate radical spin states in the solid phase.

Toward Opto-Structural Correlation to Investigate Luminescence Thermometry in an Organometallic Eu(II) Complex

Lanthanide-based luminescent materials have unique properties and are well-studied for many potential applications. In particular, the characteristic 5d → 4f emission of divalent lanthanide ions such as EuII allows for tunability of the emissive properties via modulation of the coordination environment. We report the synthesis and photoluminescence investigation of pentamethylcyclopentadienyleuropium(II) tetrahydroborate bis(tetrahydrofuran) dimer (1), the first example of an organometallic, discrete molecular EuII band-shift luminescence thermometer. Complex 1 exhibits an absolute sensitivity of 8.2 cm-1 K-1 at 320 K, the highest thus far observed for a lanthanide-based band-shift thermometer. Opto-structural correlation via variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction and fluorescence spectroscopy allows rationalization of the remarkable thermometric luminescence of complex 1 and reveals the significant potential of molecular EuII compounds in luminescence thermometry.

Effect of intermolecular anionic interactions on spin crossover of two triple-stranded dinuclear Fe(II) complexes showing above room temperature spin transition.

Two new Fe(II)-based dinuclear triple helicates having the formula {[Fe2(L)3]·(CF3SO3)4·6.5H2O·CH3OH} (complex 1) and {[Fe2(L)3]·(ClO4)4·7H2O·1.35CH3OH} (complex 2), displaying near room temperature spin transition have been synthesized and the effect of intermolecular interactions and co-operativity between metal centers on the spin crossover (SCO) has been studied. Picolinimidamide-based ligand system is chosen to provide maximum intermolecular interactions. Variable-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), magnetic study, and Hirshfeld analysis reveal that complex 1 shows a multistep spin transition, whereas, complex 2 shows an abrupt spin transition from [LS-LS] ↔ [HS-HS]. In complex 2 the presence of perchlorate anion induces high intermolecular O-H interaction that enhances the cooperativity resulting in high T1/2 of 330 K. This study accentuates the interplay between anion effect, crystal packing, and supramolecular interactions in tuning the magnetic properties of SCO compounds.

Impact of counter anions on spin-state switching of manganese(III) complexes containing an azobenzene ligand.

Four mononuclear manganese(III) complexes coordinated with photo-active hexadentate azobenzene ligands, [Mn(5azo-sal2-323)](X) (X = Cl, 1; X = BF4, 2; X = ClO4, 3; X = PF6, 4), were prepared. The impact of various counter anions on the stabilization and switching of the spin state of the manganese(III) center was explored through detailed magneto-structural investigation using variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, and spectroelectrochemical studies, along with theoretical calculations. All four complexes consisted of an isostructural monocationic distorted octahedral MnN4O2 coordination environment offered by the hexadentate ligand and Cl-, BF4-, ClO4-, and PF6- as counter anions respectively. Complex 1 with a spherical Cl- counter anion showed a reversible and gradual spin-state switching between low-spin (LS) (S = 1) and high-spin (HS) (S = 2) states above 400 K, where non-covalent cation-anion interactions played a significant role in stabilizing the LS state. While, irrespective of the shape of the counter anion, complexes 2-4 remained in the HS state throughout the measured temperature range of 300-2 K, where strong π-π interaction between the azobenzene motifs among cationic units played a substantial role in stabilizing the HS state. Furthermore, magnetic data analyses revealed significantly large zero-field splitting in the S = 1 state for 1 (D = 19.4 cm-1, E/D = 0.008) in comparison with that in the S = 2 state for 2-4 (D = 3.99-4.97 cm-1, E/D = 0.002-0.195). Spectroelectrochemical investigations revealed the quasi-reversible reduction and oxidation of the manganese(III) center to manganese(II) and manganese(IV), respectively. A detailed theoretical calculation at the DFT and CASSCF level of theory was carried out to better understand the magneto-structural correlation.

Co-crystallisation as a modular approach to the discovery of spin-crossover materials.

Herein we present co-crystallisation as a strategy for materials discovery in the field of switchable spin crossover (SCO) systems. Using [Fe(3-bpp)2]·2A (where 3-bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine, A = BF4−/PF6−) as a starting point, a total of 11 new cocrystals have been synthesised with five different dipyridyl coformers. Eight of these systems show spin crossover behaviour, and all show dramatically different switching properties from the parent complex. The cocrystals have been studied by variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction and SQUID magnetometry to develop structure–property relationships. The supramolecular architecture of the cocrystals depends on the properties of the coformer. With linear, rigid coformer molecules leading to 1D supramolecular hydrogen-bonded chains, while flexible coformers form 2D sheets and bent coformers yield 3D network structures. The SCO behaviour of the cocrystals can be modified through changing the coformer and thus co-crystallisation presents a rapid, facile and highly modular tool for the discovery of new switchable materials. The wider applicability of this strategy to the design of hybrid multifunctional materials is also discussed.

Anion-Dependent Electron Transfer in the Cyanide-Bridged [Fe2Co2] Capsules.

A family of molecular capsules, {[(Tp*)Fe(CN)3Co(bpyC═N(CH2)7N═Cbpy)]2[X]2}·sol (1, X = ClO4, sol = 6DMF; 2, X = PF6, sol = 6DMF; 3, X = OTf, sol = 6DMF; 4, X = BPh4, sol = 2DMF; Tp* = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), were prepared via the Schiff-base condensation of the aldehyde-substituted bpy (bpyCHO) and 1,7-diaminoheptane (H2N(CH2)7NH2). All the complexes contain the same cyanide-bridged cationic square cores ([Fe2Co2]2+), which are encapsuled by the flexible alkyl chains. Variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectra, and magnetic studies reveal the abrupt and complete, thermo- and photo-induced electron-transfer-coupled spin transition for 1-3, while the pure high-spin phase for 4. Such distinct behavior is attributed to the effective long-range cooperative interactions mediated by the intercluster π-π couplings in 1-3, which, however, are significantly blocked in 4 due to the steric effect of interstitial BPh4- anions. Furthermore, the shift in the thermally induced transition temperatures of 254 K for 1, 233 K for 2, and 187 K for 3, respectively, is likely correlated to the variable H···O and H···F interactions between the solvent molecules, anions, and the bipyridine ligands of the [Fe2Co2] squares, suggesting the significant anion-dependent effect in such a system.
