Weeds and Their Response to Changing Climate: A Review

Climate change is one of the most important parameters to cause alteration in weed composition, population growth, life processes, physiological development, and infestation pressure. A few of the weed species may become inactive, while the rest may become aggressive invaders. Weeds possess unique biological characteristics and ecological range that enable them to tolerate and successfully intrude in any ecosystem with varied environmental conditions. Rising carbon dioxide, will benefit C3 crops to expand their photosynthetic capacity, thus leading to increased biomass production and productivity, on the other hand increased temperatures will benefit the C4 crops. These differences in response of C3 and C4 crops to changing climate will influence crop-weed interaction, most likely at the expense of crop. Moisture is another important environmental factor which plays a major role in weed seed germination, thus the survival. Temperature and relative humidity influence the course of absorption, translocation, and metabolism of herbicides in plants, any change in their range leads to decreased herbicide efficacy and thus the weed control. Studies focussed on the performance of weeds under elevated environmental factors help to make strategic decisions on their management before having their impact on change in weed biological aspects, and foresee the future with elevated temperature and carbon dioxide conditions. Weeds such as Parthenium hysterophorus, Sphagneticola trilobata, Prosopis juliflora and Eichhornia crassipes, have been identified as potential future threats. Consequently, exploring the bioprospecting potential of these weeds is seen as an inevitable necessity.

Implementation of modified P&O and an adaptive fuzzy logic controller based MPPT tracking system under partial shading and variable environmental conditions

Most of the conventional Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) Algorithms provide the finest efficiency during uniform irradiation conditions, but under variable irradiation or partial shading condition (PSC), the performance deteriorates and the solar PV system is unable to provide the maximum electricity out of the PV Modules. This degradation in performance occurs due to the presence of numerous local maximum power points (LMPP) and a single global maximum power point (GMPP) in the power versus voltage (P-V) characteristics and the perfect tracking of these LMPP is not possible with the prevailing MPPT algorithms. In order to eradicate this shortcoming, we have proposed the implementation of an adaptive Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) based on Perturb and Observe (P&O) technique by employing a boost converter with variable resistive load under uniform irradiance condition (UIC), dynamic atmospheric conditions (DAC) and PSC in this article. We also demonstrated the usage of a simple and improved P&O algorithm by employing a buck boost converter for faster tracking time. These two suggested approaches of FLC and P&O incorporate a variable load scenario and a stable load scenario respectively to address the problem of output voltage oscillation in a PV-based system. The FLC is designed to adjust the dynamic change in step size based on the rate of change of the yield power of the PV panel to reduce oscillations in output of the boost converter and the PV system. According to the results of this analysis, the recommended FLC-based P&O (FLC-P&O) algorithm outperforms the proposed P&O algorithm under DAC and PSC with respect to tracking speed, steady-state error, and dynamic response. Apparently, it can be concluded that the proposed FLC-P&O technique can be applicable to real-time systems for reliable and efficient operation of the boost converter and add to the stability and simplicity of the contemporary PV-based systems.

The development of an IoT-based automated temperature and pH monitoring system to enhance the management of gourami fish ponds

This research aims to develop an Internet of Things (IoT)-based automated system for monitoring temperature and pH in the context of gourami fish farming. Gourami fish ponds are often situated in various environments with significant variations in environmental conditions. The system is designed to enable pond owners to remotely monitor real-time water temperature and pH, which are key factors in maintaining optimal water quality and fish health. The temperature sensor used is the DS18B20, while the pH sensor used is the E210C. The ESP32 platform is employed due to its integrated Wi-Fi capabilities. Monitoring displays are accessible on an LCD, personal computer (PC), and smartphone. This research involves the calibration and validation of temperature and pH sensors to ensure accurate measurements. The average standard deviation value for the temperature sensor is 0.092, and for the pH sensor, it is 0.031. The average accuracy of the temperature sensor is 98.60%, while the pH sensor has an average accuracy of 98.41%. The results demonstrate that IoT-based temperature and pH monitoring allow for in-depth data analysis of environmental conditions and long-term trend analysis in pond management.

The C-terminus of the prototypical M2 muscarinic receptor localizes to the mitochondria and regulates cell respiration under stress conditions.

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors are prototypical G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), members of a large family of 7 transmembrane receptors mediating a wide variety of extracellular signals. We show here, in cultured cells and in a murine model, that the carboxyl terminal fragment of the muscarinic M2 receptor, comprising the transmembrane regions 6 and 7 (M2tail), is expressed by virtue of an internal ribosome entry site localized in the third intracellular loop. Single-cell imaging and import in isolated yeast mitochondria reveals that M2tail, whose expression is up-regulated in cells undergoing integrated stress response, does not follow the normal route to the plasma membrane, but is almost exclusively sorted to the mitochondria inner membrane: here, it controls oxygen consumption, cell proliferation, and the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by reducing oxidative phosphorylation. Crispr/Cas9 editing of the key methionine where cap-independent translation begins in human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), reveals the physiological role of this process in influencing cell proliferation and oxygen consumption at the endogenous level. The expression of the C-terminal domain of a GPCR, capable of regulating mitochondrial function, constitutes a hitherto unknown mechanism notably unrelated to its canonical signaling function as a GPCR at the plasma membrane. This work thus highlights a potential novel mechanism that cells may use for controlling their metabolism under variable environmental conditions, notably as a negative regulator of cell respiration.

Short-versus long-term effects of nitrogen addition and warming on soil nitrogen mineralization and leaching in a grass-dominated old field.

Increased atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition and climate warming are both anticipated to influence the N dynamics of northern temperate ecosystems substantially over the next century. In field experiments with N addition and warming treatments, cumulative treatment effects can be important for explaining variation in treatment effects on N dynamics over time; however, comparisons between data collected in the early vs. later years potentially can be confounded with interactions between treatment effects and inter-annual variation in environmental conditions or other factors. We compared the short-term versus long-term effects of N addition and warming on net N mineralization and N leaching in a grass-dominated old field using in situ soil cores. We added new N addition and warming plots (3 years old) to an existing field experiment (16 years old), which enabled comparison of the treatment effects at both time scales while controlling for potential inter-annual variation in other factors. For net N mineralization, there was a significant interaction between plot age and N addition over the growing season, and for extractable inorganic N there was a significant interaction between plot age and warming over winter. In both cases, the directions of the treatment effects differed among old and new plots. Moreover, the responses in the new plots differed from the responses observed previously when the 16-year-old plots had been new. These results demonstrate how inter-annual variation in responses, independent from cumulative treatment effects, can play an important role in interpreting long-term effects on soil N cycling in global change field experiments.

Trophic ecology of the greater amberjack in relation to marine environmental characteristics in Taiwanese waters illustrated by stable isotope and stomach content approach

The greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) holds significant commercially and ecologically important large pelagic marine species in Taiwanese waters. The aim of this study was investigates its stomach contents and stable isotope signatures (δ13C and δ15N) were used to explore the trophic ecology and to detect the dietary variations by length, sex, and season and their associations with marine environmental characteristics. Utilizing a generalized additive model, we elucidate how marine environmental variables influence greater amberjack feeding habitats. Our findings revealed that the mixed layer depth and sea surface temperature explained the highest influence in the greater amberjack feeding ground. To reveal the trophic ecology of the greater amberjack and their ecosystem trophic dynamics, we used an innovative approach combining stomach content analysis (SCA) and stable isotope analysis (SIA) of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C and δ15N) coupled with Bayesian mixing model analysis. By contrast, some of the results in SIA were different from the most important food items identified in SCA; in general, they prefer to consume pelagic prey species. The Bayesian mixing models indicated that the target predator species diet structure was dominated by Trichiuridae and Leiognathidae prey species, as indicated by the highest δ15N values. The relationships of the greater amberjack weight and length were not significant with δ13C values (p > 0.05) but were significant (p < 0.001) with δ15N values. The relationships between trophic positions (TPs) in terms of length, sex, and season suggested an ontogenetic shift, with varied TP values between 4.01 and 5.18, indicating that the greater amberjack is the top-level predator species in the pelagic marine ecosystem. These findings can guide ecosystem-based adaptive fishery management and conservation because the local prey species depletion and variations in marine environmental conditions may affect greater amberjack fisheries in Taiwanese waters.

Flexible migration and habitat use strategies of an endangered waterbird during hydrological drought

AbstractWildlife species confront threats from climate and land use change, exacerbating the influence of extreme climatic events on populations and biodiversity. Migratory waterbirds are especially vulnerable to hydrological drought via reduced availability of surface water habitats. We assessed how whooping cranes (Grus americana) modified habitat use and migration strategies during drought to evaluate their resilience to changing conditions and adaptive capacity. We categorized &gt;8000 night‐roost sites used by 146 cranes from 2010 to 2022 and examined relative use during non‐drought, moderate drought, and extreme drought conditions. We found cultivated and uncultivated palustrine and lacustrine wetlands were generally used less during droughts than non‐drought conditions. Conversely, impounded palustrine and lacustrine systems and rivers served more frequently as drought refugia (i.e., used more during drought than non‐drought conditions). Night roosts occurred primarily on private lands (86% overall); public land use decreased with latitude and increased with drought severity, with greatest use (56%) occurring during severe autumn drought in the southern Great Plains. Quantifying use of identified critical habitats in the United States indicated that Cheyenne Bottoms State Waterfowl Management Area and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge were used less during drought, and the Central Platte River and Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge received similar use during drought compared to non‐drought conditions. Our findings provide insights into compensatory use of habitats, where impounded surface water may function in a complementary fashion with natural wetlands. Collectively, these and other types of wetlands distributed across the migration corridor provided a reliable network of habitat available across the Great Plains. A diversity of wetlands available during variable environmental conditions would be useful in supporting continued recovery of whooping cranes and likely have benefits for a wide array of migratory birds.

Three decades of nearshore surveys reveal long-term patterns in gray whale habitat use, distribution, and abundance in the Northern California Current

The nearshore waters of the Northern California Current support an important seasonal foraging ground for Pacific Coast Feeding Group (PCFG) gray whales. We examine gray whale distribution, habitat use, and abundance over 31 years (1992–2022) using standardized nearshore (< 5 km from shore) surveys spanning a large swath of the PCFG foraging range. Specifically, we generated density surface models, which incorporate detection probability into generalized additive models to assess environmental correlates of gray whale distribution and predict abundance over time. We illustrate the importance of coastal upwelling dynamics, whereby increased upwelling only yields higher gray whale density if interspersed with relaxation events, likely because this combination optimizes influx and retention of nutrients to support recruitment and aggregation of gray whale prey. Several habitat features influence gray whale distribution, including substrate, shelf width, prominent capes, and river estuaries. However, the influence of these features differs between regions, revealing heterogeneity in habitat preferences throughout the PCFG foraging range. Predicted gray whale abundance fluctuated throughout our study period, but without clear directional trends, unlike previous abundance estimates based on mark-recapture models. This study highlights the value of long-term monitoring, shedding light on the impacts of variable environmental conditions on an iconic nearshore marine predator.

Shear Strength and Durability of Expansive Soil Treated with Recycled Gypsum and Rice Husk Ash

Expansive soil underlying structures pose a significant risk to the integrity of superstructures. Chemical soil stabilization can be used to strengthen soils due to the cost and impracticality of mechanical approaches. Waste materials such as recycled gypsum and rice husk ash have been considered alternatives because of their sustainable and economic advantages. A combination of these additives was used to address the high absorption of gypsum and the lack of cohesion of the pozzolan. The study assessed the short-term and long-term performance of expansive soil treated with recycled gypsum and rice husk ash under normal and fluctuating moisture conditions. Direct shear tests indicated ductile and compressive soil behavior with improved shear strength. A good approximation of stress–strain response was made with a modified hyperbolic model for treated soils that exhibited strain hardening and compressive volumetric strain. Durability and water immersion tests were performed for samples after varying curing periods and cycles of capillary soaking to assess the behavior when exposed to varied environmental conditions. Samples under the modified durability test experienced significant strength loss, with decreasing compressive strength as curing durations increased. Specimens in the modified water immersion test experienced significant strength loss; however, it was determined that curing durations did not contribute to the change in the strength of the sample. Expansion index tests also determined that the treatment effectively mitigated expansivity and collapsibility in all samples. Despite improvement in shear strength and expansion potential, further investigation is needed to enhance the durability of soil treated with gypsum and rice husk ash.

Meta-analyses of reproductive changes in angiosperm populations in response to elevation reveal a lack of global patterns.

Elevation is a major factor shaping plant populations on a global scale. At the same time, reproductive traits play a major role in plant fitness. With increasing altitude and increasingly harsh conditions, decreases in pollinator visitation rates, sexual investment, seed set, and heterozygosity (due to increased selfing) are expected. In response, selection and/or phenotypic plasticity could lead to an increase in plants' floral displays to increase their attractiveness to pollinators and compensates for the negative fitness impacts of reduced pollinator activity. A large body of literature tests these hypotheses at the among-species level, but empirical evidence at the population level (i.e., wihin-species), where adaptive change may occur, is still limited to species-specific studies. Unravelling the global patterns of change in the reproductive traits, flower visitation rates and heterozygosity of plant populations across variable environmental conditions, especially climate can help us to understand how species are able to cope with shifting conditions associated with global change, particularly in mountains. Here, we used meta-analytic approaches to assess the reproductive changes of plant populations in response to elevation on a global scale. We used a data set with 243 paired populations of plants at 'lower' and 'higher' elevations, spanning an elevation range of 0-4380 m asl and taken from 121 angiosperm species and 115 published studies. We analyzed changes in flower number, size and longevity, pollen production, flower visitation rate, seed set and expected heterozygosity.We then tested whether the observed patterns for each trait were dependent upon plant phylogeny and various ecogeographical factors and species traits. We found no evidence of elevation having a global effect on the reproductive traits of angiosperm populations. This null global pattern was not affected by geograph or phylogenetics. Our results suggest that changes in reproductive traits, flower visitation rates, and heterozygosity in plant populations across elevations are specific to each species and ecosystem. Hence, macroevolutionary (across species) and macroecological patterns of elevation of plant reproduction reported previously are apparently not simply the outcome of microevolutionary changes (within species). This apparent specificity of response across plant species poses difficulties in predicting the effects of global changes and, specifically, climatic changes, on the fate of plant species, populations, and communities.

Experimental investigations of water retention curves of fresh and decomposed municipal solid wastes under multiple drying and wetting cycles

AbstractMunicipal solid wastes (MSWs) disposed in landfills are generally exposed to drying and wetting cycles because of the variation in environmental conditions, decomposition of organics and leachate recirculation. This paper studies the water retention curves (WRCs) of fresh and degraded MSWs under various numbers of drying and wetting cycles with water and leachate exposure. The result indicates that the water retention capacities of MSWs decrease with drying and wetting cycles. The maximum hysteresis between the drying and wetting cycles is observed in the first cycles for all MSW samples. The WRCs of medium to highly decomposed MSWs under drying and wetting cycles are similar to those of soils. The WRCs of fresh MSWs can undergo substantial changes due to the discharge of intra-particle moisture caused by decomposition and compression. For both fresh and decomposed MSWs, the WRCs stabilize after 3 drying and wetting cycles. However, only the MSWs of one initial composition with similar void ratios were investigated. Further research should be conducted to investigate the water retention behavior of MSWs with diverse initial compositions (e.g., food contents) and void ratios.

Environmental heterogeneity and lizard assemblages in riparian areas in Cyprus

The island of Cyprus hosts a rich diversity of reptiles, including several endemic species. Reptiles are morecommon in Mediterranean-type shrubland and other open habitats in Cyprus, although riparian formations offeradditional cover and food sources, especially during dry, hot summers. Riparian habitats are often very heterogeneous,an attribute that can be important for lizards since they can utilize a variety of microhabitats crucial for different aspectsof their ecology. Nevertheless, reptilian diversity in riparian systems remains understudied and Cyprus is no exception.The aim of this study was to compare lizard diversity and abundance patterns across seasons and elevations, as well astheir relationships with habitat heterogeneity and protected status of areas along riverbanks, as expressed by presencein or out of Natura 2000 sites. We examined the effects that these factors can have on lizard communities by studyingthree rivers that exhibit variations in environmental conditions. Additionally, we evaluated separately the abundancesof four common species (Snake-eyed Lizard, Ophisops elegans; Troodos Rock Lizard, Phoenicolacerta troodica; CyprusRock Agama, Laudakia cypriaca; and Schreiber’s Fringe-toed Lizard, Acanthodactylus schreiberi) while recording in riparian habitats seven of the 11 Cypriot species of lizards. Diversity and richness were not significantly associated withany of the explanatory variables examined (season, elevation, habitat heterogeneity, and protected status). Moreover,we found no relationship between the abundances of each of the four species and habitat heterogeneity, even thoughthey responded differently to elevation, season, and protected status. Our results suggest that lizard diversity in ripariansystems is high compared to the total number of lizard species found on Cyprus, reaching 60% of the overall richness.

Traffic Sign Recognition using CNN (Convolutional Neural Network)

Effective recognition of traffic signs systems are essential for traffic management since road safety is a major problem. In this work, we introduce a unique method for computer vision and deep learning-based real-time traffic sign identification and categorization. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs), trained on an extensive collection of photographs of traffic signs, are the tool we use in our approach. We improve the quality of the input photos and extract relevant features by preprocessing them, which includes grayscale conversion and normalization. After that, the CNN model examines these characteristics to precisely determine the kind of traffic sign that is shown. To further improve classification accuracy, we also use bounding box localization to correctly outline and extract indicators. The effectiveness of our system is shown by experimental findings, which show that it can reliably detect traffic signs in a variety of environmental conditions. This study provides a reliable and effective method for identifying traffic signs, promoting road safety

Comparison of Bioinspired Techniques for Tracking Maximum Power under Variable Environmental Conditions

This paper presents a comparative analysis of bioinspired algorithms employed on a PV system subject to standard conditions, under step-change of irradiance conditions, and a partial shading condition for tracking the global maximum power point (GMPP). Four performance analysis and comparison techniques are artificial bee colony, particle swarm optimization, genetic algorithm, and a new metaheuristic technique called jellyfish optimization, respectively. These existing algorithms are well-known for tracking the GMPP with high efficiency. This paper compares these algorithms based on extracting GMPP in terms of maximum power from a PV module running at a uniform (STC), nonuniform solar irradiation (under step-change of irradiance), and partial shading conditions (PSCs). For analysis and comparison, two modules are taken: 1Soltech-1STH-215P and SolarWorld Industries GmbH Sunmodule plus SW 245 poly module, which are considered to form a panel by connecting four series modules. Comparison is based on maximum power tracking, total execution time, and minimum number of iterations to achieve the GMPP with high tracking efficiency and minimum error. Minitab software finds the regression equation (objective function) for STC, step-changing irradiation, and PSC. The reliability of the data (P-V curves) was measured in terms of p value, R, R2, and VIF. The R2 value comes out to be near 1, which shows the accuracy of the data. The simulation results prove that the new evolutionary jellyfish optimization technique gives better results in terms of higher tracking efficiency with very less time to obtain GMPP in all environmental conditions, with a higher efficiency of 98 to 99.9% with less time of 0.0386 to 0.1219 sec in comparison to ABC, GA, and PSO. The RMSE value for the proposed method JFO (0.59) is much lower than that of ABC, GA, and PSO.

Do Living Mulches or Environmental Conditions Have a Greater Impact on the External Quality of the Apple Fruit ‘Chopin’ Cultivar?

Research was carried out to assess the yield and quality of fruits from the new Polish apple tree ‘Chopin’—a ‘green peel’, scab-resistant cultivar under grass living mulch management. Blue fescue and red fescue were tested in experiment no. 1. In experiment no. 2, meadow grass and perennial ryegrass were used. Every species of grass was sown in two doses of 50 and 150 kg per ha. Herbicide fallow was introduced as a control in both experiments. Strongly variable temperatures and precipitations in the years of evaluation made it possible to estimate year—a function of variable environmental conditions—as an additional experimental factor. An unexpected effect of the presence of living mulch was its significant impact on the appearance of blush on the ‘green peel’ fruit. However, living mulches had little effect on weight and fruit size. Cool days during apple ripening enhanced the process of fruit skin red coloration. The effect of both agrotechnical and environmental factors on fruit quality was more visible in the case of less vigorous trees, which were more susceptible to experimental, stressful conditions. However, increasing the sowing dose of each grass seed did not influence red blushing, weight, or fruit size. An additional difficulty for the trees was the competition caused by the early germination of these living grass mulches, reinforced by the presence of Trifolium repens L.

Selection of reference genes for normalizing gene expression data across seasons in spermatozoa of water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).

Selection of the most stably expressed reference genes is key to monitoring accurate target gene expression across any tissue or cell type. The mRNA in spermatozoa stores valuable information related to changes in spermatogenesis due to variations in environmental conditions, especially during heat stress, which affects various sperm functions. Semen quality in buffalo bulls is significantly influenced by the seasons. In the study, a panel of nine genes was evaluated to identify the most stably expressed internal control gene (ICG) for the normalization of real-time gene expression data generated across various seasons for Murrah buffalo bulls' spermatozoa. Sperm cells were purified from the semen samples collected during different seasons, with temperature-humidity index (THI) ranging from 80.80 ± 1.47 (hot summer) to 55.88 ± 1.98 (winter), using the BoviPure™ gradient purification method. The RNA isolated from the purified spermatozoa fraction was quality checked prior to reverse transcription and subjected to qPCR (quantitative real-time PCR) based expression analysis. An automated 'endoGene' pipeline was employed to apply the geNorm, NormFinder, and BestKeeper algorithms for data analysis. The result indicated that GAPDH and PP1A were the most stably expressed among the gene panel, whereas ATPSF1 and ACTB were the two least stable expressed reference genes. Further, the most suitable ICGs identified were validated by normalization of real time expression data of heat stress and sperm quality genes, HSFY2 and AKAP4, respectively. The genes identified would help in generating the most reliable results for the expression profiling of the genes dictating sperm quality and heat stress cope-up mechanism in buffalo spermatozoa, collected during different seasons.

Impacts of longitudinal water curtain cooling system on transcriptome-related immunity in ducks

BackgroundThe closed poultry houses integrated with a longitudinal water curtain cooling system (LWCCS) are widely used in modern poultry production. This study showed the variations in environmental conditions in closed houses integrated with a longitudinal water curtain cooling system. We evaluated the influence of different environmental conditions on duck growth performance and the transcriptome changes of immune organs, including the bursa of Fabricius and the spleen.ResultThis study investigated the slaughter indicators and immune organ transcriptomes of 52-day-old Cherry Valley ducks by analyzing the LWCC at different locations (water curtain end, middle position, and fan cooling end). The results showed that the cooling effect of the LWCCS was more evident from 10:00 a.m. -14:00. And from the water curtain end to the fan cooling end, the hourly average temperature differently decreased by 0.310℃, 0.450℃, 0.480℃, 0.520℃, and 0.410℃, respectively (P < 0.05). The daily and hourly average relative humidity decreased from the water curtain end to the fan cooling end, dropping by 7.500% and 8.200%, respectively (P < 0.01). We also observed differences in production performance, such as dressing weight, half-eviscerated weight, skin fat rate, and percentage of abdominal fat (P < 0.01), which may have been caused by environmental conditions. RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) revealed 211 and 279 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the ducks’ bursa of Fabricius and spleen compared between the water curtain end and fan cooling end, respectively. The Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis of the two organs showed the DEGs were mainly enriched in cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, integral component of membrane, Retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I)-like receptors (RLRs) signaling pathway, etc. Our results implied that full-closed poultry houses integrated with LWCCS could potentially alter micro-environments (water curtain vs. fan cooling), resulting in ducks experiencing various stressful situations that eventually affect their immunity and production performance.ConclusionIn this study, our results indicated that uneven distributions of longitudinal environmental factors caused by LWCCS would affect the dressed weight, breast muscle weight, skin fat rate, and other product performance. Moreover, the expression of immune-related genes in the spleen and bursa of ducks could be affected by the LWCCS. This provides a new reference to optimize the use of LWCCS in conjunction with close duck houses in practical production.

Environmentally Robust Triboelectric Tire Monitoring System for Self-Powered Driving Information Recognition via Hybrid Deep Learning in Time-Frequency Representation.

Developing a robust artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) system with a self-powered triboelectric sensor for harsh environment is challenging because environmental fluctuations are reflected in triboelectric signals. This study presents an environmentally robust triboelectric tire monitoring system with deep learning to capture driving information in the triboelectric signals generated from tire-road friction. The optimization of the process and structure of a laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode layer in the triboelectric tire is conducted, enabling the tire to detect universal driving information for vehicles/robotic mobility, including rotation speeds of 200-2000 rpm and contact fractions of line. Employing a hybrid model combining short-term Fourier transform with a convolution neural network-long short-term memory, the LIG-based triboelectric tire monitoring (LTTM) system decouples the driving information, such as traffic lines and road states, from varied environmental conditions of humidity (10%-90%) and temperatures (50-70°C). The real-time line and road state recognition of the LTTM system is confirmed on a mobile platform across diverse environmental conditions, including fog, dampness, intense sunlight, and heat shimmer. This work provides an environmentally robust monitoring AIoT system by introducing a self-powered triboelectric sensor and hybrid deep learning for smart mobility.

Intra and interspecific variation in thermal performance and critical limits in anurans from southern Chile

The relationship between temperature and performance can be illustrated through a thermal performance curve (TPC), which has proven useful in describing various aspects of ectotherms' thermal ecology and evolution. The parameters of the TPC can vary geographically due to large-scale variations in environmental conditions. However, only some studies have attempted to quantify how thermal performance varies over relatively small spatial scales, even in the same location or consistently among individuals within a species. Here, we quantified individual and species variation in thermal sensitivity of locomotor performance in five amphibia Eupsophus species found in the temperate rainforests of southern Chile and compared their estimates against co-occurring species that exhibit a substantially more extensive distributional range. We measured critical thermal limits and jumping performance under five different temperatures. Our results suggest that thermal responses are relatively conserved along the phylogeny, as the locomotor performance and thermal windows for activity remained narrow in Eupsophus species when compared against results observed for Batrachyla taeniata and Rhinella spinulosa. Additionally, we found significant individual differences in locomotor performance within most species, with individual consistency in performance observed across varied temperatures. Further analyses explored the influence of body size on locomotor performance and critical thermal limits within and between species. Our results suggest a trade-off scenario between thermal tolerance breadth and locomotor performance, where species exhibiting broader thermal ranges might have compromised performance. Interestingly, these traits seem partly mediated by body size variations, raising questions about potential ecological implications.

Toward More Accurate Modeling of Canopy Radiative Transfer and Leaf Electron Transport in Land Surface Modeling

AbstractModeling leaf photosynthesis is essential for quantifying the carbon, water, and energy fluxes of the terrestrial biosphere. However, due to the lack of simultaneous measurements of leaf light absorption and gas exchange, canopy radiative transfer (RT) and photosynthesis modeling often rely on simplified assumptions about light absorption and electron transport. These assumptions ignore variations in leaf biophysical traits and environmental conditions. In this study, we utilized a next‐generation land surface model (LSM)—CliMA Land, which incorporates hyperspectral canopy RT and provides a more accurate representation of trait variations. We evaluated the potential bias in electron transport estimates introduced by the broadband RT schemes used in traditional LSMs. Additionally, we explored the impact of different leaf electron transport parameterization schemes on global‐scale photosynthesis and fluorescence modeling. We showed that (a) traditional LSMs that disregard the impacts of leaf temperature and leaf traits on electron transport tend to overestimate electron transport rates. (b) Photosynthesis and fluorescence within a grid can exhibit biases exceeding 20%, with these biases demonstrating contrasting seasonality. (c) Global estimates of integrated photosynthesis and fluorescence differ by 8.1% and 8.8%, respectively. These results underscore the importance of adopting more sophisticated and accurate modeling schemes, such as hyperspectral canopy RT, in future LSMs and Earth system modeling to enhance the reliability of modeling outcomes.
