Tapping Performance of Professional and Amateur Darbuka Players.

Motor skills of professional musicians can be regarded as a model to investigate human skill acquisition after prolonged practice. Although rhythmic tapping skills of musicians such as drummers and pianists were investigated previously, the tapping performance of hand percussionists is still largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the tapping performance of professional and amateur darbuka players. Three tapping tasks were performed: single-, double-, and triple-finger tapping tasks. The participants were asked to tap as fast as possible for 12 s in the single-finger tapping task while they tapped as fast and alternate/even as possible in the double- and triple-finger tapping tasks. The tapping speed and variability of inter-tap interval (ITI) and tapping amplitude were assessed for each task. In the single-finger and triple-finger tapping tasks, there was no significant difference in the tapping speed between the professional and amateur darbuka players. In the double-finger tapping task, the tapping speed was significantly faster in the professional players than the amateur players. Interestingly, the professional players showed faster tapping speed in both familiar and unfamiliar patterns of finger coordination. The tapping speed of the double-finger tapping task was significantly correlated with the duration and the age of commencement of darbuka training. The professional players also showed less variability of ITI and tapping amplitude compared to the amateur players. These results suggest that prolonged practice of the hand percussion increases the performance stability and coordination speed of both familiar and unfamiliar patterns.

Influence of Pacing by Periodic Auditory Stimuli on Movement Continuation: Comparison with Self-regulated Periodic Movement

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of external pacing with periodic auditory stimuli on the control of periodic movement. [Subjects and Methods] Eighteen healthy subjects performed self-paced, synchronization-continuation, and syncopation-continuation tapping. Inter-onset intervals were 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000 ms. The variability of inter-tap intervals was compared between the different pacing conditions and between self-paced tapping and each continuation phase. [Results] There were no significant differences in the mean and standard deviation of the inter-tap interval between pacing conditions. For the 1,000 and 5,000 ms tasks, there were significant differences in the mean inter-tap interval following auditory pacing compared with self-pacing. For the 2,000 ms syncopation condition and 5,000 ms task, there were significant differences from self-pacing in the standard deviation of the inter-tap interval following auditory pacing. [Conclusion] These results suggest that the accuracy of periodic movement with intervals of 1,000 and 5,000 ms can be improved by the use of auditory pacing. However, the consistency of periodic movement is mainly dependent on the inherent skill of the individual; thus, improvement of consistency based on pacing is unlikely.

Auditory and visual information do not affect self-paced bilateral finger tapping in children with DCD

Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) are more variable in timing their fingers to an external cue. In this study, we investigated the intrinsic coordination properties of self-selected anti-phase finger tapping with and without vision and audition in children with and without DCD and compared their performance to that of adults. Ten children with DCD (Mean age = 7.12 ± 0.3 years), 10 age- and sex-matched typically developing (TD) children, and 10 adults participated in this study. Participants tapped their fingers in anti-phase at a self-selected speed under four different sensory conditions: (1) with vision and audition, (2) with vision but no audition, (3) with audition but no vision, and (4) without vision and audition. We assessed intertap interval (ITI), variability of ITI, mean relative phasing (RP) between the fingers and the variability in RP. Children with DCD adopted a similar mean frequency, but were less accurate and more variable than the other groups. The different sensory conditions did not affect performance in any of the groups. We conclude that visual and auditory feedback of tapping are not salient information sources for bilateral self-selected tapping and that children with DCD are intrinsically less accurate and more variable in their tapping frequency and coordination.

When executed concurrently with a primary task, finger tapping performance is commonly interpreted as an indication of the primary task mental workload. Higher load during tapping induces an increase in mean or variability of intertap intervals. Finger tapping sensitivity was tested with series of 13 taps at a tapping rate of one tap every two seconds. Concurrent primary task required subjects to search for a target item, presented after each tap, in a three digit memory set memorized before each series. Processing load was varied by including letter targets amongst positive and negative digit targets. Letter target recognition should require less processing than digit recognition. Results show mean intertap intervals for letter targets to be shorter than for negative digit targets. Furthermore, recognition of negative digit targets induces a longer mean intertap interval than positive targets. These data suggest that continuous finger tapping is a sensitive index of the mental workload originating from working memory processing requirements. However, analysis of practice data show that development of strategies at performing the dual task may mask the sensitivity of the finger tapping task.

The relationship between variability of intertap intervals and interval duration

Subjects tracked intervals in a synchronization paradigm at interval durations of 180, 210, 240, 270, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, and 1,000 ms. The variability of intertap intervals (ITIs) shows a sudden increase near 300 ms. This increase is interpreted as indicating the transition from automatic to controlled movement. It is suggested that the sudden change in the variability of ITIs does not reflect the operation of different timing mechanisms at short and long intervals, but differences in the way in which attentional processes come to bear on movement initiation for different interval durations. In contrast to previous findings reported in the literature, a U-shaped function between interval duration and variability in the 300-to-1,000-ms range was not observed.

The effect on performance of hemispheric attentional load in function of two modalities of afference-efference

The effects of the hemispheric attentional load on performance was investigated while manipulating two modalities of afference-efference. Twenty-one male subjects participated in this study. Two main tasks were selected. The verbal task consisted of repeating words heard monaurally during a period of ten seconds. The motor task was an index finger tapping task of ten second duration. Eight blocks of four trials were presented. Eight experimental conditions were identified: (1) right hand alone; (2) left hand alone; (3) right ear alone; (4) left ear alone; (5) right hand and right ear; (6) right hand and left ear; (7) left hand and right ear; (8) left hand and left ear. Number of correctly pronounced syllables, number of taps on the key, and standard deviation of time of intertap intervals (ITI) were used as measures of performance. The analysis of verbal performance and the variability of intertap intervals did not reveal any significant difference between the experimental conditions. The motor speed results indicated that only the right hand and right hand ⇔ left ear conditions were significantly faster than all other conditions; F(5,415) = 7.42, p < 0.001. Moreover, the second phase trials (from 5 to 10 sec) were significantly slower than the first (from 0 to 5 sec); F(1,83) = 46.97; p < 0.001. The conclusions were that (1) the increase of hemispheric attentional load had a negative effect on performance above a critical load level, (2) two modalities of afference/efference, when utilized in the same perceptual hemifield, had opposite effects on performance according to the hemispheric location, (3) two afference-efference modalities, each used in a different perceptual hemifield, had similar effects on performance, according to their hemispheric location.
