Terrestrial vegetation carbon sink analysis and driving mechanism identification in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

The estimation of terrestrial carbon sinks in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) still faces significant uncertainties, and the spatiotemporal dynamics of terrestrial carbon sinks along altitudinal gradients remain unexplored. Moreover, the driving mechanisms of terrestrial carbon sinks at the watershed scale in the QTP continue to be lacking. To address these research gaps, based on multi-source remote sensing data and meteorological data, this study calculated the Net Ecosystem Productivity (NEP) in the QTP from 2000 to 2020 using the Modis NPP-soil respiration model. Through the coefficient of variation (CV), the Mann-Kendall test (MK), and the spatial autocorrelation methods, the spatial distribution pattern and spatiotemporal trends of NEP were investigated. Employing a pixel accumulation method, the variation of NEP along altitudinal gradients was explored. Grey relation analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, and Geographical detector (GD) were used to investigate the driving mechanisms of NEP at the watershed scale. Results showed that: (1) the terrestrial ecosystem in the QTP served as a carbon sink, which produced a total of 2.04 Pg C from 2000 to 2020, and the multi-year average of total carbon sinks was 96.92 Tg C; (2) the spatial distribution of NEP shows a decreasing change from southeast to northwest, and the clustering characteristic of NEP is significant at the watershed scale; (3) the elevation of 4507 m we proposed is likely to be a key threshold for biophysical processes of the terrestrial ecosystems in the QTP; (4) the fluctuation and change trend of carbon sources and carbon sinks show significant differences between the East and West; (5) at the watershed scale, precipitation and temperature play a dominant role in the variation of NEP, while the impact of human activities on NEP variation is weak. Our study aims to address the existing knowledge gaps and provide valuable insights into the management of terrestrial carbon sinks in QTP.

Drought in the middle growing season inhibited carbon uptake more critical in an anthropogenic shrub ecosystem of Northwest China

Large-scale ecological restoration efforts of the degraded desert steppe ecosystem in northwestern China have effectively combated desertification but have also resulted in the encroachment of shrubs. However, the function of the anthropogenic shrub ecosystem is still unknown under climate change, especially the response of carbon fluxes to drought, which hinders our further understanding of its sustainability in the future. Hence, based on the eddy covariance and environment sensors, continuous carbon and water fluxes and biophysical factors were monitored during 2019–2022 to investigate the characteristics of carbon fluxes and their response to seasonal drought in an anthropogenic shrub ecosystem dominated by Caragana liouana in the southern Mu Us sandy land, northwestern China. The results showed the shrub ecosystem was a stable carbon sink over the 4 years despite large interannual variability, with annual net ecosystem production (NEP) ranging from 54.37 to 150.35 g C·m−2·y−1. Interannual variability in NEP was mainly due to variation in gross primary productivity (GPP), which is driven by the fact that interannual variability in GPP was higher than interannual variability in ecosystem respiration (Reco). While drought inhibited GPP more than Reco, thus weakening the carbon sequestration ability of the ecosystem during the middle growing season, and thereby carbon fluxes in the shrub ecosystem were significantly suppressed by drought in the middle growing season but slightly in the early growing season. Furthermore, the magnitude and variation of carbon fluxes were determined by the maximum apparent photosynthetic capacity of the canopy (Pmax), leaf area index (LAI), and canopy conductance (gc), all of which are limited by water stress during drought. The work suggests that to keep the carbon sink of anthropogenic shrub ecosystems in arid and semi-arid areas, managers should focus on drought-relief measures in the middle growing season that are better adapted to future climate change.

Spatio-temporal Variation in NEP in Ecological Zoning on the Loess Plateau and Its Driving Factors from 2000 to 2021

Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) is an important index for the quantitative evaluation of carbon sources and sinks in terrestrial ecosystems. Based on MOD17A3 and meteorological data, the vegetation NEP was estimated from 2000 to 2021 in the Loess Plateau (LP) and its six ecological subregions of the LP (loess sorghum gully subregions:A1, A2; loess hilly and gully subregions:B1, B2; sandy land and agricultural irrigation subregion:C; and earth-rock mountain and river valley plain subregion:D). Combined with the terrain, remote sensing, and human activity data, Theil-Sen Median trend analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression residual analysis, and geographic detector were used, respectively, to explore the spatio-temporal characteristics of NEP and its response mechanism to climate, terrain, and human activity. The results showed that:① On the temporal scale, from 2000 to 2021 the annual mean NEP of the LP region (in terms of C) was 104.62 g·(m2·a)-1. The annual mean NEP for both the whole LP and each of the ecological subregions showed a significant increase trend, and the NEP of the LP increased by 6.10 g·(m2·a)-1 during the study period. The highest growth rate of the NEP was 9.04 g·(m2·a)-1, occurring in the A2 subregion of the loess sorghum gully subregions. The subregion C had the lowest growth rate of 2.74 g·(m2·a)-1. Except for the C subregion, all other ecological subregions (A1, A2, B1, B2, and D) were carbon sinks. ② On the spatial scale, the spatial distribution of annual NEP on the LP was significantly different, with the higher NEP distribution in the southeast of the LP and the lower in the northwest of the LP. The high carbon sink area was mainly distributed in the southern part of the loess sorghum gully subregions, and the carbon source area was mainly distributed in the northern part of the loess sorghum gully subregions and most of the C subregion. The high growth rate was mainly distributed in the central and the southern part of the A2 subregion and the southwest part of the B2 subregion. ③ Human activities had the greatest influence on the temporal variation in NEP in the LP and all the ecological subregions, with the correlation coefficient between human activity data and NEP being above 0.80, and the relative contribution rates of human factors was greater than 50%. The spatial distribution was greatly affected by meteorological factors, among which the precipitation and solar radiation were the main factors affecting the spatial changes in the NEP of the LP. The temporal and spatial variations in the NEP in the LP were influenced by natural and human social factors. To some extent, these results can provide a reference for the terrestrial ecosystem in the LP to reduce emissions and increase sinks and to achieve the goal of double carbon.

Dry-season length affects the annual ecosystem carbon balance of a temperate semi-arid shrubland

Semi-arid ecosystems have been shown to dominate over tropical forests in determining the trend and interannual variability of land carbon (C) sink. However, the magnitude and variability of ecosystem C balance remain largely uncertain for temperate semi-arid shrublands at the decadal scale. Using eddy-covariance and micro-meteorological measurements, we quantified the interannual variation in net ecosystem production (NEP) and its components, gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (Reco, i.e., the sum of autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration), in a semi-arid shrubland of the Mu Us Desert, northern China during 2012–2022. This shrubland was an overall weak C sink over the 11 years (NEP = 12 ± 46 g C m−2 yr−1, mean ± SD). Annual NEP ranged from −66 to 77 g C m−2 yr−1, with the ecosystem frequently switching between being an annual C sink and a C source. GPP was twice as sensitive as Reco to prolonged dry seasons, leading to a close negative relationship between annual NEP and dry-season length (R2 = 0.80, P < 0.01). Annual GPP (R2 = 0.51, P = 0.01) and NEP (R2 = 0.58, P < 0.01) were positively correlated with annual rainfall. Negative annual NEP (the ecosystem being a C source) tended to occur when the dry season exceeded 50 d yr−1 or rainfall dropped below 280 mm yr−1. Increases in dry-season length strengthened the effects of low soil moisture relative to high vapor pressure deficit in constraining NEP. Both GPP and NEP were more closely correlated with C uptake amplitude (annual maximum daily values) than with C uptake period. These findings indicate that dry-season extension under climate change may reduce the long-term C sequestration in semi-arid shrublands. Plant species adapted to prolonged dry seasons should be used in ecosystem restoration in the studied area to enhance ecosystem functions.

Interannual variability of spring and summer monsoon growing season carbon exchange at a semiarid savanna over nearly two decades

Eddy covariance measurements of land-atmosphere energy, carbon, and water exchange now span multiple decades at some sites, supporting an improved understanding of flux interannual variability (IAV) and its ecophysiological and physical controls. Most eddy covariance IAV studies have focused on temperate forest ecosystems, where carbon fluxes are large and flux records are longest – but also where IAV is much lower than in dryland regions, which have been identified as an essential driver of the trend and variability in the global terrestrial carbon sink. In this study, we leveraged 19 years of continuous micrometeorological measurements at the AmeriFlux US-SRM mesquite savanna site in southern Arizona, USA to quantify the IAV, trends, and drivers of carbon fluxes during the distinct spring and summer growing seasons. We also assessed the ability of modern satellite and land surface models to capture the IAV of seasonal water and carbon fluxes. Annual net ecosystem production (NEP) was small and highly variable (23 +/- 64 gC m − 2 yr−1). Precipitation and associated measures of water availability determined most of the variability in NEP, largely through their influence on annual and seasonal gross ecosystem productivity (GEP) as opposed to ecosystem respiration (ER). Root-zone soil moisture captured between 73% (spring) and 85% (summer) of GEP variability and between 73% (spring) and 58% (summer) of ER variability. Throughout the study period, soil moisture and greenness increased with associated increases in GEP, ER and NEP. These trends were strongly influenced by very productive and wet summer growing seasons during the last two years, which were characterized by abundant understory grass cover. Typically, less than half of the variability in growing season GEP and evapotranspiration was captured by satellite-based estimates and land surface model simulations with local site forcing and calibration, highlighting the ongoing utility of long-term datasets to support careful model testing and improvement.

Simulated net ecosystem productivity of subtropical forests and its response to climate change in Zhejiang Province, China.

Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) is an important index that indicates the carbon sequestration capacity of forest ecosystems. However, the effect of climate change on the spatiotemporal variability in NEP is still unclear. Using the Integrated Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon-budget (InTEC) model, this study takes the typical subtropical forests in the Zhejiang Province, China as an example, simulated the spatiotemporal patterns of forest NEP from 1979 to 2079 based on historically observed climate data (1979-2015) and data from three representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5) provided by the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5). We analyzed the responses of NEP at different forest age classes to the variation in meteorological factors. The NEP of Zhejiang's forests decreased from 1979 to 1985 and then increased from 1985 to 2015, with an annual increase rate of 9.66 g C·m-2·yr-1 and a cumulative NEP of 364.99 Tg·C. Forest NEP decreased from 2016 to 2079; however, the cumulative NEP continued to increase. The simulated cumulative NEP under the RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5 scenarios was 750 Tg·C, 866 Tg·C, and 958 Tg·C, respectively, at the end of 2079. Partial correlation analysis between forest NEP at different age stages and meteorological factors showed that temperature is the key climatic factor that affects the carbon sequestration capacity of juvenile forests (1979-1999), while precipitation is the key climatic factor that affects middle-aged forests (2000-2015) and mature forests (2016-2079). Adopting appropriate management strategies for forests, such as selective cutting of different ages, is critical for the subtropical forests to adapt to climate change and maintain their high carbon sink capacity.

Long‐term change in metabolism phenology in north temperate lakes

AbstractThe phenology of dissolved oxygen (DO) dynamics and metabolism in north temperate lakes offers a basis for comparing metabolic cycles over multi‐year time scales. Although proximal control over lake DO can be attributed to metabolism and physical processes, how those processes evolve over decades largely remains unexplored. Metabolism phenology may reveal the importance of coherence among lakes and facilitate general conclusions about the controls on lake metabolism at regional scales. We developed a Bayesian modeling framework to estimate DO concentrations and metabolism in eight lakes in contrasting landscapes in Wisconsin, USA. We identify the DO and metabolism phenologies for each lake, and use those to compare how decadal patterns relate to trophic state and landscape setting. We show that lakes can be categorized by their hypolimnetic oxygen consumption dynamics, with oligotrophic lakes having a diverse set of patterns and eutrophic lakes having uniform trends of increased oxygen consumption over the last decade. Metabolism phenology is likewise diverse for oligotrophic lakes, whereas eutrophic lakes in southern Wisconsin share consistent long‐term patterns of metabolic trends and seasonal DO consumption highlighting the importance of trophic state driving metabolism. Eutrophic lakes had higher magnitudes and more seasonal variation in net ecosystem production in contrast to oligotrophic lakes. Generally, long‐term metabolic trends of north temperate lakes suggest a limited influence of climate on lake metabolism and that temporal coherence of long‐term metabolism change is driven primarily by the landscape setting.

Re-assessment of the climatic controls on the carbon and water fluxes of a boreal aspen forest over 1996-2016: Changing sensitivity to long-term climatic conditions.

Recent evidence suggests that the relationships between climate and boreal tree growth are generally non-stationary; however, it remains uncertain whether the relationships between climate and carbon (C) fluxes of boreal forests are stationary or have changed over recent decades. In this study, we used continuous eddy-covariance and microclimate data over 21 years (1996-2016) from a 100-year-old trembling aspen stand in central Saskatchewan, Canada to assess the relationships between climate and ecosystem C and water fluxes. Over the study period, the most striking climatic event was a severe, 3-year drought (2001-2003). Gross ecosystem production (GEP) showed larger interannual variability than ecosystem respiration (Re ) over 1996-2016, but Re was the dominant component contributing to the interannual variation in net ecosystem production (NEP) during post-drought years. The interannual variations in evapotranspiration (ET) and C fluxes were primarily driven by temperature and secondarily by water availability. Two-factor linear models combining precipitation and temperature performed well in explaining the interannual variation in C and water fluxes (R2 > .5). The temperature sensitivities of all three C fluxes (NEP, GEP and Re ) declined over the study period (p < .05), and, as a result, the phenological controls on annual NEP weakened. The decreasing temperature sensitivity of the C fluxes may reflect changes in forest structure, related to the over-maturity of the aspen stand at 100 years of age, and exacerbated by high tree mortality following the severe 2001-2003 drought. These results may provide an early warning signal of driver shift or even an abrupt status shift of aspen forest dynamics. They may also imply a universal weakening in the relationship between temperature and GEP as forests become over-mature, associated with the structural and compositional changes that accompany forest ageing.

Remote Sensing Estimation and Spatiotemporal Pattern Analysis of Terrestrial Net Ecosystem Productivity in China

Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) plays an important role in understanding ecosystem function and the global carbon cycle. In this paper, the key parameters of the Carnegie Ames Stanford Approach (CASA) model, maximum light use efficiency (εmax), was optimized by using vegetation classification data. Then, the NEP was estimated by coupling the optimized CASA model, geostatistical model of soil respiration (GSMSR) and the soil respiration–soil heterotrophic respiration (Rs-Rh) relationship model. The ground observations from ChinaFLUX were used to verify the NEP estimation accuracy. The results showed that the R2 of the optimized CASA model increased from 0.411 to 0.774, and RMSE decreased from 21.425 gC·m−2·month−1 to 12.045 gC·m−2·month−1, indicating that optimizing CASA model by vegetation classification data was an effective method to improve the estimation accuracy of NEP. On this basis, the spatial and temporal distribution of NEP in China was analyzed. The research indicated that the monthly variation of NEP in China was a single peak curve with summer as the peak, which generally presented the pattern of southern region &gt; northern region &gt; Qinghai–Tibet region &gt; northwest region. Furthermore, from 2001 to 2016, most regions of China showed a non-significant level upward trend, but main cropland (e.g., North China Plain and Northeast Plain) and some grassland (e.g., Ngari in Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and Xilin Gol League in Inner Mongolia) showed a non-significant-level downward trend. The study can deepen the understanding of the distribution of carbon sources/sinks in China, and provide a reference for regional carbon cycle research.

Land uses changed the dynamics and controls of carbon-water exchanges in alkali-saline Songnen Plain of Northeast China

Land reclamation and grassland management are important land utilization pattern for effective use and restoration of alkali-saline land in agriculture-pasture transition regions. These large-scale land cover/land use changes (LCLUC) could impose profound and divergent impacts on terrestrial carbon (C) and H2O cycling, hence require precise assessment of ecosystem CO2 uptake and water use differences due to specific land use of the same climate/soil landscape. We initiated clustered eddy covariance flux-tower observations and C/H2O fluxes analysis of 4 adjacent representative land cover and grassland managements types on alkali-saline Songnen Plain, including fenced meadow (as reference land use), clipped meadow, degraded alkali-saline land and paddy field in 2018–2019. Results showed that differences in land use influenced the magnitude and temporal variation of net ecosystem productivity (NEP) and evapotranspiration (ET). Compared to fenced meadow, paddy field increased growing season C uptake by 63.3% and ET by 35.4%, while degraded alkali-saline land and clipped meadow decreased C uptake by 43.0% and 30.6%, and ET by 32.1% and 3.2%. Degraded alkali-saline land barely sequestrate C in dry year, whereas paddy field is least sensitive to inter-annual precipitation variation. Growing season C uptake was advanced in clipped meadow due to increased surface temperature, while monthly ET peaked early at May in paddy field. Agricultural use and specific grassland management also caused large differences in ET partitioning. Fenced meadow had greater ET partitioned into transpiration (69%) than clipped meadow (58%), degraded alkali-saline land and paddy field (41% and 34%, respectively). Water use efficiency appeared greater in clipped meadow and degraded alkali-saline land than in fenced meadow, and responded differently to abiotic factors. Overall, large-scale LCLUC has exerted significant influence on terrestrial C/H2O balances and physical responses in alkali-saline Songnen Plain.

Interannual and spatial variability of net ecosystem production in forests explained by an integrated physiological indicator in summer

Understanding the feedback of ecosystem carbon uptake on climate change at temporal and spatial scales is crucial for developing ecosystem models. Previous studies have focused on the role of spring and autumn phenology in regulating carbon sequestration in forest stands, but few on the impact of physiological status in summer. However, plant accumulated the most carbon in summer compared with spring and autumn, therefore, it is of great significance to explore the role of summer phenological metrics on the variability of carbon sequestration. Using 514 site-years of flux data obtained at 40 FLUXNET sites including three forest ecosystems (i.e. evergreen needleleaf forest (ENF), deciduous broadleaf forest (DBF) and mixed forest (MF)) in Europe and North America, we compared the potential of physiological and phenological metrics of Gross Primary Production (GPP) and Ecosystem Respiration (RECO) in explaining the interannual and spatial variability (IAV and SV) of forest net ecosystem production (NEP). In view of the better performance of physiological metrics, we developed the maximum carbon uptake index (MCUI), which integrated the physiology metrics of photosynthesis and respiration in summer, and further explored its ability in explaining the IAV and SV of NEP. The results suggest that the MCUI had a better ability than respiration-growth length ratio (RGR) in predicting NEP for all three forest types. The interpretation of MCUI based on meteorological variables illustrated that the controlling meteorological factors of MCUI differed substantially among ecosystems. The summer shortwave radiation had the greatest influence on MCUI at DBF sites, while the soil water content played an important but opposite role at ENF and DBF sites, and no significant meteorological driver was found at MF sites. The higher potential of MCUI in explaining IAV and SV of NEP highlights the importance of summer physiology in controlling the forest carbon sequestration, and further confirms the significant role of peak plant growth in regulating carbon cycle of forest ecosystems. Understanding the drivers of peak plant growth is therefore of a great significance for further improving the precious of ecosystem model in the future.

Predicting warming-induced hypoxic stress for fish in a fragmented river channel using ecosystem metabolism models

Aquatic biota often face multiple anthropogenic threats such as river fragmentation and climate change that can contribute to high rates of aquatic species imperilment world-wide. Temperature-induced hypoxia is one under-explored mechanism that can threaten aquatic species in fragmented rivers with reduced flows. We applied ecosystem metabolism models to define the effect of water temperature on net ecosystem production (NEP) of oxygen at 12 sites of a fragmented river channel that supports three fish species at risk and experiences hypoxia. We found that water temperature and precipitation events at 75% of our sites were significantly and negatively correlated to NEP estimates and explained 28% of the variation in NEP within sites. Temperature-induced reductions in NEP at these sites likely contributed to hypoxic conditions threatening the three species at risk as NEP explained 41% of the variation in dissolved oxygen near all sites. Our results have applications for understanding drivers of hypoxic stress in fragmented watercourses, integrating water temperature–NEP effects with oxygen demands of sensitive fish species, and modeling future effects of climate change on aquatic species.

Increasing temperature shortened the carbon uptake period and decreased the cumulative net ecosystem productivity in a maize cropland in Northeast China

• Carbon uptake period (CUP) was mainly determined by the end date of CUP in autumn. • NEP max explained greater interannual variation in cumulative NEP than CUP. • Both start and end dates of CUP were advanced with increasing winter temperature. • NEP max decreased with increasing precipitation in summer and autumn. • CUP tended to shorten with increasing temperature, thus decreasing cumulative NEP. Phenology—mainly associated with climatic factors—is crucial for the accurate estimation of cumulative annual carbon exchange between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. However, the effects of changes in phenology on annual vegetation productivity and its regulatory mechanisms remain unclear, particularly in agricultural ecosystems. Therefore, in this study, we examined the associations among cumulative net ecosystem productivity (NEP), phenological metrics, and climatic factors based on long-term (2005–2014) eddy covariance flux and meteorological observations in a maize cropland in Northeast China. The results showed that carbon uptake period (CUP) was mainly determined by the end date of CUP (ECUP) in autumn. Cumulative NEP from May to September (NEP 5−9 ), a period generally corresponding to the growing season, significantly increased with NEP max (defined in this study as the 90th percentile of daily NEP during CUP) and CUP. NEP max explained greater interannual variation in NEP 5−9 than CUP. The start date of CUP (SCUP) and ECUP were both advanced with increasing winter temperature, but ECUP was more temperature-sensitive than SCUP. Thus, CUP tended to shorten with increasing temperature, ultimately decreasing cumulative NEP. In addition, NEP max decreased with increasing precipitation in summer and autumn. The Greenup and MidGreendown dates from the MODIS Global Vegetation Phenology (MCD12Q2) product generally captured the interannual variation in the carbon flux-based SCUP and ECUP, respectively, well. The results of this study would be of great significance for predicting the response of ecosystem productivity to plant phenology shifts in agricultural ecosystems in future climate change scenarios.

Multi-year eddy covariance measurements of net ecosystem exchange in tropical dry deciduous forest of India

Tropical deciduous forests are unique in terms of their geographical distribution, strong seasonality and their contribution to global carbon dynamics, but yet their carbon sequestration potential is poorly sampled. In the current study, we report the carbon balance of 65-year-old tropical dry deciduous forest in central India using the multi-year eddy covariance measurements from November 2011 to May 2019. Over the study period, the forest site was observed to be a net sink of atmospheric CO2 with a mean annual net ecosystem productivity (NEP) of 524 (± 40; ±1 SD across different years) g C m−2 yr−1 with a 233 (±15) day growing season. The NEP was partitioned into gross primary productivity (GPP) of 3358 (± 167) g C m−2 yr−1 and annual carbon loss due to respiration and decomposition (Reco) of 2834 (± 157) g C m−2 yr−1. The ecosystem showed a strong seasonality as a source of carbon during the leaf-off season (March to June), and as a carbon sink during the rest of the year with significant sequestration during the winter season (October to December). The intra-annual analysis suggested that CO2 flux is primarily controlled by canopy greenness with mean Reco/GPP ratio varying from 1.90 (± 0.12) to 0.79 (± 0.04) during leaf-off to leaf-on seasons. The monthly C fluxes in the growing season are found to be strongly correlated to the environmental variables rather than in the leaf-off season, while variability in monthly ecosystem respiration was better explained by air temperature during the leaf-off season than the growing season. Further, the inter-annual variability of NEP was mainly dependent on growing season length and mean annual temperature. The variations in annual GPP and Reco were directly dependent on the increase in mean annual temperature. The eddy covariance-based NEP was complemented by close independent biometric estimates, imparting confidence in our measurements. In conclusion, this tropical dry deciduous forest site is a substantial carbon sink and would add crucial information regarding carbon budgeting of tropical forests in global carbon balance models.

Spatial variations in terrestrial net ecosystem productivity and its local indicators

Abstract. Multiple lines of evidence have demonstrated the persistence of global land carbon (C) sink during the past several decades. However, both annual net ecosystem productivity (NEP) and its inter-annual variation (IAVNEP) keep varying over space. Thus, identifying local indicators for the spatially varying NEP and IAVNEP is critical for locating the major and sustainable C sinks on land. Here, based on daily NEP observations from FLUXNET sites and large-scale estimates from an atmospheric-inversion product, we found a robust logarithmic correlation between annual NEP and seasonal carbon uptake–release ratio (i.e. U ∕ R). The cross-site variation in mean annual NEP could be logarithmically indicated by U ∕ R, while the spatial distribution of IAVNEP was associated with the slope (i.e. β) of the logarithmic correlation between annual NEP and U ∕ R. Among biomes, for example, forests and croplands had the largest U ∕ R ratio (1.06 ± 0.83) and β (473 ± 112 g C m−2 yr−1), indicating the highest NEP and IAVNEP in forests and croplands, respectively. We further showed that these two simple indicators could directly infer the spatial variations in NEP and IAVNEP in global gridded NEP products. Overall, this study provides two simple local indicators for the intricate spatial variations in the strength and stability of land C sinks. These indicators could be helpful for locating the persistent terrestrial C sinks and provide valuable constraints for improving the simulation of land–atmospheric C exchanges.

Understanding the role of phenology and summer physiology in controlling net ecosystem production: a multiscale comparison of satellite, PhenoCam and eddy covariance data

Understanding the temporal and spatial variability (SV) of net ecosystem productivity (NEP) is critical for coupling ecosystem carbon (C) cycle and climate system. Previous studies have shown responses of NEP to changes of plant phenology, but impacts of summer physiological status on annual NEP and how this may vary across different ecosystems and spatial scales were largely unknown. Combining large regional satellite derived indices (MODIS), 676 site-year local data (FLUXDATA) covering seven vegetation types, and 57 site-year regional data (PhenoCam), we found that phenological metrics and summer physiological indicators were significantly correlated with their respective gross primary production-based estimates. The interannual variability of NEP was mostly explained by summer physiology than phenology for most ecosystems, while phenology showed a better performance than summer physiology only for grassland sites. In comparison, inconsistent results were derived from three scales when explaining the SV of NEP. Summer physiology showed more potential in interpreting the SV of NEP at large regional scale, but both physiology and the length of growing season exhibited similar performances at local scale. Observations from regional scale were not able to explain NEP, given that the green chromatic coordinate signal cannot track photosynthesis in summer with a high canopy closure. The finding highlights the important role of summer physiology in controlling the C accumulation of terrestrial ecosystems and understanding the responses of summer physiology to environmental drivers is of great significance for improving the simulation accuracy of C sequestration under the global climate change.

Factors controlling long-term carbon dioxide exchange between a Douglas-fir stand and the atmosphere identified using an artificial neural network approach

It is critical to have long-term carbon dioxide (CO2) flux observations in forest ecosystems to understand how changing climate can affect forest carbon (C) stocks and CO2 exchange between forests and the atmosphere. In this study, fifteen years (2002–2016) of continuous eddy-covariance flux and climate measurements in an intermediate-aged Douglas-fir stand on the east coast of Vancouver Island, Canada, were analyzed. First, the eddy covariance-measured CO2 fluxes were partitioned into gross primary production and ecosystem respiration using two artificial neural networks. Second, the responses of net ecosystem production, gross primary production and ecosystem respiration to interannual climate variability, including five El Niño-Southern Oscillation events, were determined. Three hyper-parameters (number of layers, hidden units, and batch size) of each artificial neural network were set by Bayesian optimization using sequential model-based optimization while the remaining hyper-parameters were taken from the literature. The first artificial neural network was fitted using only nighttime CO2 flux data and applied to estimate nighttime and daytime ecosystem respiration values, and the second one was used to gap-fill gross primary production values. In addition, a predictor analysis was done to investigate the most influential predictors (i.e., environmental variables) within seasons and years. When applied to half-hourly data, the ecosystem respiration model had an R2 of 0.43, whereas the gross primary production model had an R2 of 0.80. The stand was a moderate C sink (average net ecosystem production of 118 ± 404 g C m−2 year−1) during the entire study period, except for the years 2002–2006 when the stand was a moderate C source. The mean annual values of gross primary production and ecosystem respiration were 1649 ± 157 g C m−2 year−1 and 1531 ± 410 g C m−2 year−1, respectively. Our analysis showed that soil temperature was the most important predictor for the ecosystem respiration model, and photosynthetically active irradiance was the most important predictor for the gross primary production model. However, during dry periods in late summer, soil moisture became the most important predictor. Interannual variability of net ecosystem production was only slightly affected by annual total precipitation, mean soil temperature and mean air temperature. Instead, it depended on spring mean air temperature (start of the growing season), summer total precipitation (indicative of water deficiency) and mean summer air temperature. El Niño and La Niña events generally resulted in lower and higher annual net ecosystem production, respectively.

The Impact of Seasonal and Annual Climate Variations on the Carbon Uptake Capacity of a Deciduous Forest Within the Great Lakes Region of Canada.

In eastern North America, many deciduous forest ecosystems grow at the northernmost extent of their geographical ranges, where climate change could aid or impede their growth. This region experiences frequent extreme weather conditions, allowing us to study the response of these forests to environmental conditions, reflective of future climates. Here we determined the impact of seasonal and annual climate variations and extreme weather events on the carbon (C) uptake capacity of an oak‐dominated forest in southern Ontario, Canada, from 2012 to 2016. We found that changes in meteorology during late May to mid‐July were key in determining the C sink strength of the forest, impacting the seasonal and annual variability of net ecosystem productivity (NEP). Overall, higher temperatures and dry conditions reduced ecosystem respiration (RE) much more than gross ecosystem productivity (GEP), leading to higher NEP. Variability in NEP was primarily driven by changes in RE, rather than GEP. The mean annual GEP, RE, and NEP values at our site during the study were 1,343 ± 85, 1,171 ± 139, and 206 ± 92 g C m−2 yr−1, respectively. The forest was a C sink even in years that experienced heat and water stresses. Mean annual NEP at our site was within the range of NEP (69–459 g C m−2 yr−1) observed in similar North American forests from 2012 to 2016. The growth and C sequestration capabilities of our oak‐dominated forest were not adversely impacted by changes in environmental conditions and extreme weather events experienced over the study period.

How Simulations of the Land Carbon Sink Are Biased by Ignoring Fluvial Carbon Transfers: A Case Study for the Amazon Basin

Summary Land-surface models are important tools for simulation of the past, present, and future capacity of terrestrial ecosystems to absorb anthropogenic CO2 emissions. However, fluvial carbon (C) transfers are presently neglected in these models. Using the Amazon basin as a case study, we show that this negligence leads to significant underestimation of the net uptake of atmospheric C while terrestrial C storage changes are overestimated. These biases arise from the fact that C—in reality, leached from soils and exported through the river network—is instead represented as partly being respired and partly being stored in soils. Moreover, these biases scale mainly to the fluvial C export to the coast, despite aquatic CO2 emission to the atmosphere being the major pathway of riverine C exports. We further show that fluvial C transfers may change significantly in response to changes in either hydrology or in atmospheric C uptake by vegetation.
