Daytime variation in the aerosol indirect effect for warm marine boundary layer clouds in the eastern North Atlantic

Abstract. Warm boundary layer clouds in the eastern North Atlantic region exhibit significant diurnal variations in cloud properties. However, the diurnal cycle of the aerosol indirect effect (AIE) for these clouds remains poorly understood. This study takes advantage of recent advancements in the spatial resolution of geostationary satellites to explore the daytime variation in the AIE by estimating the cloud susceptibilities to changes in cloud droplet number concentration (Nd). Cloud retrievals for the month of July over 4 years (2018–2021) from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on Meteosat-11 over this region are analyzed. Our results reveal a significant “U-shaped” daytime cycle in susceptibilities of the cloud liquid water path (LWP), cloud albedo, and cloud fraction. Clouds are found to be more susceptible to Nd perturbations at noon and less susceptible in the morning and evening. The magnitude and sign of cloud susceptibilities depend heavily on the cloud state defined by cloud LWP and precipitation conditions. Non-precipitating thin clouds account for 44 % of all warm boundary layer clouds in July, and they contribute the most to the observed daytime variation. Non-precipitating thick clouds are the least frequent cloud state (10 %), and they exhibit more negative LWP and albedo susceptibilities compared to thin clouds. Precipitating clouds are the dominant cloud state (46 %), but their cloud susceptibilities show minimal variation throughout the day. We find evidence that the daytime variation in LWP and albedo susceptibilities for non-precipitating clouds is influenced by a combination of the diurnal transition between non-precipitating thick and thin clouds and the “lagged” cloud responses to Nd perturbations. The daytime variation in cloud fraction susceptibility for non-precipitating thick clouds can be attributed to the daytime variation in cloud morphology (e.g., overcast or broken). The dissipation and development of clouds do not adequately explain the observed variation in cloud susceptibilities. Additionally, daytime variation in cloud susceptibility is primarily driven by variation in the intensity of cloud response rather than the frequency of occurrence of cloud states. Our results imply that polar-orbiting satellites with an overpass time at 13:30 LT underestimate daytime mean values of cloud susceptibility, as they observe susceptibility daily minima in the study region.

ALMA-LEGUS. II. The Influence of Subgalactic Environments on Molecular Cloud Properties

We compare the molecular cloud properties in subgalactic regions of two galaxies, barred spiral NGC 1313, which is forming many massive clusters, and flocculent spiral NGC 7793, which is forming significantly fewer massive clusters despite having a similar star formation rate to NGC 1313. We find that there are larger variations in cloud properties between different regions within each galaxy than there are between the galaxies on a global scale, especially for NGC 1313. There are higher masses, line widths, pressures, and virial parameters in the arms of NGC 1313 and the center of NGC 7793 than in the interarm and outer regions of the galaxies. The massive cluster formation of NGC 1313 may be driven by its greater variation in environment, allowing more clouds with the necessary conditions to emerge, although no one parameter seems primarily responsible for the difference in star formation. Meanwhile NGC 7793 has clouds that are as massive and have as much kinetic energy as the clouds in the arms of NGC 1313, but have densities and pressures more similar to those in the interarm regions and so are less inclined to collapse and form stars. The cloud properties in NGC 1313 and NGC 7793 suggest that spiral arms, bars, interarm regions, and flocculent spirals each represent distinct environments with regard to molecular cloud populations. We see surprisingly little difference in surface density between the regions, suggesting that the differences in surface densities frequently seen between arm and interarm regions in lower-resolution studies are indicative of the sparsity of molecular clouds, rather than differences in their true surface density.

Technical note: Emulation of a large-eddy simulator for stratocumulus clouds in a general circulation model

Abstract. Here we present for the first time a proof of concept for an emulation-based method that uses a large-eddy simulations (LESs) to present sub-grid cloud processes in a general circulation model (GCM). We focus on two key variables affecting the properties of shallow marine clouds: updraft velocity and precipitation formation. The LES is able to describe these processes with high resolution accounting for the realistic variability in cloud properties. We show that the selected emulation method is able to represent the LES outcome with relatively good accuracy and that the updraft velocity and precipitation emulators can be coupled with the GCM practically without increasing the computational costs. We also show that the emulators influence the climate simulated by the GCM but do not consistently improve or worsen the agreement with observations on cloud-related properties, although especially the updraft velocity at cloud base is better captured. A more quantitative evaluation of the emulator impacts against observations would, however, have required model re-tuning, which is a significant task and thus could not be included in this proof-of-concept study. All in all, the approach introduced here is a promising candidate for representing detailed cloud- and aerosol-related sub-grid processes in GCMs. Further development work together with increasing computing capacity can be expected to improve the accuracy and the applicability of the approach in climate simulations.

Effects of Riming on Ice‐Phase Precipitation Growth and Transport Over an Orographic Barrier

AbstractThe evolution of ice‐phase particles within precipitating clouds depends on the environmental properties of the cloud and on physical characteristics of the particles themselves, which can be modified by airflow over steep terrain. Through employing a unique Lagrangian particle‐based precipitation model, this study investigates the sensitivities in ice‐phase particle growth and transport due to variabilities in riming processes over an orographic barrier. This analysis is applied to two wintertime stratiform cyclones sampled by in situ aircraft over windward slopes during the Olympic Mountains Experiment. For both events, we simulate the ice‐phase particle evolution and trajectory within a two‐dimensional prescribed state representative of median observed cloud properties. Sensitivity simulations were constructed based on observed variabilities in supercooled liquid water (SLW) properties and its vertical extent above the melting level. Perturbations of SLW concentration equivalent to the 85th and 15th percentiles of observed values, which typically amounted to a change of less than 0.05 g m−3, resulted in respective increases or decreases in the ice‐phase contribution to surface precipitation mass by as much as 50% and horizontal particle trajectories differences exceeding 10 km. Similar sensitivities were found in response to varying the vertical extent of SLW above the melting level and to adjustments in mean SLW droplet size. The significant precipitation response to small variations in cloud properties principally arises from changing rates of rime mass accumulation and correspondingly, increases in particle fall speed. Considerations for the numerical representation of the riming process and its complex effects on precipitation are discussed.

Regional Characteristics of Cloud Properties over the Loess Plateau

As an important meteorological element, clouds play an important role in the radiative transfer process and atmospheric and water circulation. The Loess Plateau is the largest arid and semi-arid area in China, with a fragile ecological environment. However, few scholars have studied the spatial and temporal variations in cloud properties in the Loess Plateau. Therefore, in this study, cloud properties in the Loess Plateau were analyzed at the annual, seasonal, and diurnal scales based on Himawari-8 cloud products. The results show that cloud frequency (CF), cloud optical thickness (COT) and cloud effective radius (CER) show obvious spatial discrepancies in the Loess Plateau. Regions with high CF and COT values are mainly concentrated in the southern part of the Loess Plateau. In general, areas with high CER values also have low COT values. The highest CF values are observed in summer, and the highest COT values mainly appear in autumn. However, the highest CER values mainly appear in spring and winter. In terms of the diurnal variation, the CF is high at midday and low in the morning and afternoon, while the diurnal variation in COT values is the opposite: there are high COT values in the morning and afternoon and low values at midday. The CER values show an increasing trend from morning to afternoon and reach a maximum at 17:00 BJT. High CF values in the southern Loess Plateau and in summer relate to surface water and heat conditions; the vegetation cover, total column water vapor and temperature values are relatively high in this area. High COT values in the southern Loess Plateau are associated with sufficient water vapor levels and high levels of aerosol optical thickness. However, high CER levels in the northern Loess Plateau and in spring and winter may be caused by a higher nucleation rate related to the colder temperature. Moreover, more factors could influence CER, i.e., water vapor and aerosols, but they show complex relationships with the CER which need further explored.

Probing the Explainability of Neural Network Cloud-Top Pressure Models for LEO and GEO Imagers

Abstract Satellite low-Earth-orbiting (LEO) and geostationary (GEO) imager estimates of cloud-top pressure (CTP) have many applications in both operations and in studying long-term variations in cloud properties. Recently, machine learning (ML) approaches have shown improvement upon physically based algorithms. However, ML approaches, and especially neural networks, can suffer from a lack of interpretability, making it difficult to understand what information is most useful for accurate predictions of cloud properties. We trained several neural networks to estimate CTP from the infrared channels of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) and the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). The main focus of this work is assessing the relative importance of each instrument’s infrared channels in neural networks trained to estimate CTP. We use several ML explainability methods to offer different perspectives on feature importance. These methods show many differences in the relative feature importance depending on the exact method used, but most agree on a few points. Overall, the 8.4- and 8.6-μm channels appear to be the most useful for CTP estimation on ABI and VIIRS, respectively, with other native infrared window channels and the 13.3-μm channel playing a moderate role. Furthermore, we find that the neural networks learn relationships that may account for properties of clouds such as opacity and cloud-top phase that otherwise complicate the estimation of CTP. Significance Statement Model interpretability is an important consideration for transitioning machine learning models to operations. This work applies several explainability methods in an attempt to understand what information is most important for estimating the pressure level at the top of a cloud from satellite imagers in a neural network model. We observe much disagreement between approaches, which motivates further work in this area but find agreement on the importance of channels in the infrared window region around 8.6 and 10–12 μm, informing future cloud property algorithm development. We also find some evidence suggesting that these neural networks are able to learn physically relevant variability in radiation measurements related to key cloud properties.

Effects of CO-dark Gas on Measurements of Molecular Cloud Stability and the Size–Linewidth Relationship

Stars form within molecular clouds, so characterizing the physical states of molecular clouds is key to understanding the process of star formation. Cloud structure and stability are frequently assessed using metrics including the virial parameter and Larson scaling relationships between cloud radius, velocity dispersion, and surface density. Departures from the typical Galactic relationships between these quantities have been observed in low-metallicity environments. The amount of H2 gas in cloud envelopes without corresponding CO emission is expected to be high under these conditions; therefore, this CO-dark gas could plausibly be responsible for the observed variations in cloud properties. We derive simple corrections that can be applied to empirical clump properties (mass, radius, velocity dispersion, surface density, and virial parameter) to account for CO-dark gas in clumps following power-law and Plummer mass density profiles. We find that CO-dark gas is not likely to be the cause of departures from Larson’s relationships in low-metallicity regions, but that virial parameters may be systematically overestimated. We demonstrate that correcting for CO-dark gas is critical for accurately comparing the dynamical state and evolution of molecular clouds across diverse environments.

International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project: Extending the Record

AbstractISCCP continues to quantify the global distribution and diurnal-to-interannual variations of cloud properties in a revised version. This paper summarizes assessments of the previous version, describes refinements of the analysis and enhanced features of the product design, discusses the few notable changes in the results, and illustrates the long-term variations of global mean cloud properties and differing high cloud changes associated with ENSO. The new product design includes a global, pixel-level product on a 0.1° grid, all other gridded products at 1.0°-equivalent equal area, separate satellite products with ancillary data for regional studies, more detailed, embedded quality information, and all gridded products in netCDF format. All the data products including all input data, expanded documentation, the processing code, and an operations guide are available online. Notable changes are 1) a lowered ice–liquid temperature threshold, 2) a treatment of the radiative effects of aerosols and surface temperature inversions, 3) refined specification of the assumed cloud microphysics, and 4) interpolation of the main daytime cloud information overnight. The changes very slightly increase the global monthly mean cloud amount with a little more high cloud and a little less middle and low cloud. Over the whole period, total cloud amount slowly decreases caused by decreases in cumulus/altocumulus; consequently, average cloud-top temperature and optical thickness have increased. The diurnal and seasonal cloud variations are very similar to earlier versions. Analysis of the whole record shows that high cloud variations, but not low clouds, exhibit different patterns in different ENSO events.

Vertical Variation of Turbulent Entrainment Mixing Processes in Marine Stratocumulus Clouds Using High‐Resolution Digital Holography

AbstractMarine stratocumulus clouds contribute significantly to the Earth's radiation budget due to their extensive coverage and high albedo. Yet, subgrid variability in cloud properties, such as aerosol concentration, droplet number, and precipitation rates, lead to considerable errors in global climate models. While these clouds usually have small vertical extent, turbulent entrainment‐mixing and precipitation can generate significant variations in droplet number, size, and relative dispersion with altitude. Here, we analyze turbulent entrainment‐mixing processes and the variability in cloud microphysical properties as a function of height within a warm marine stratocumulus cloud layer over the Eastern North Atlantic. We use high‐resolution airborne holographic measurements and compare them with local turbulence measurements. We find that entrainment‐mixing is primarily inhomogeneous near cloud top and homogeneous near cloud base. Further analysis of Damköhler number and transition scale number are able to explain the mixing mechanisms at different cloud heights using phase relaxation but not droplet evaporation as the microphysical time scale. A modified droplet evaporation time scale that considers local saturation deficit using a simple linear mixing model is developed, and it is able to reliably explain the observed mixing mechanisms. This study reinforces the importance of turbulent mixing and the use of appropriate microphysical time scales in determining cloud microphysical processes.

Evaluation of aerosol and cloud properties in three climate models using MODIS observations and its corresponding COSP simulator, as well as their application in aerosol–cloud interactions

Abstract. The evaluation of modelling diagnostics with appropriate observations is an important task that establishes the capabilities and reliability of models. In this study we compare aerosol and cloud properties obtained from three different climate models (ECHAM-HAM, ECHAM-HAM-SALSA, and NorESM) with satellite observations using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. The simulator MODIS-COSP version 1.4 was implemented into the climate models to obtain MODIS-like cloud diagnostics, thus enabling model-to-model and model-to-satellite comparisons. Cloud droplet number concentrations (CDNCs) are derived identically from MODIS-COSP-simulated and MODIS-retrieved values of cloud optical depth and effective radius. For CDNC, the models capture the observed spatial distribution of higher values typically found near the coasts, downwind of the major continents, and lower values over the remote ocean and land areas. However, the COSP-simulated CDNC values are higher than those observed, whilst the direct model CDNC output is significantly lower than the MODIS-COSP diagnostics. NorESM produces large spatial biases for ice cloud properties and thick clouds over land. Despite having identical cloud modules, ECHAM-HAM and ECHAM-HAM-SALSA diverge in their representation of spatial and vertical distributions of clouds. From the spatial distributions of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and aerosol index (AI), we find that NorESM shows large biases for AOD over bright land surfaces, while discrepancies between ECHAM-HAM and ECHAM-HAM-SALSA can be observed mainly over oceans. Overall, the AIs from the different models are in good agreement globally, with higher negative biases in the Northern Hemisphere. We evaluate the aerosol–cloud interactions by computing the sensitivity parameter ACICDNC=dln⁡(CDNC)/dln⁡(AI) on a global scale. However, 1 year of data may be considered not enough to assess the similarity or dissimilarities of the models due to large temporal variability in cloud properties. This study shows how simulators facilitate the evaluation of cloud properties and expose model deficiencies, which are necessary steps to further improve the parameterisation in climate models.

Satellite-based Cloudiness and Solar Energy Potential in Texas and Surrounding Regions

Global horizontal irradiance (i.e., shortwave downward solar radiation received by a horizontal surface on the ground) is an important geophysical variable for climate and energy research. Since solar radiation is attenuated by clouds, its variability is intimately associated with the variability of cloud properties. The spatial distribution of clouds and the daily, monthly, seasonal, and annual solar energy potential (i.e., the solar energy available to be converted into electricity) derived from satellite estimates of global horizontal irradiance are explored over the state of Texas, USA and surrounding regions, including northern Mexico and the western Gulf of Mexico. The maximum (minimum) monthly solar energy potential in the study area is 151–247 kWhm−2 (43–145 kWhm−2) in July (December). The maximum (minimum) seasonal solar energy potential is 457–706 kWhm−2 (167–481 kWhm−2) in summer (winter). The available annual solar energy in 2015 was 1295–2324 kWhm−2. The solar energy potential is significantly higher over the Gulf of Mexico than over land despite the ocean waters having typically more cloudy skies. Cirrus is the dominant cloud type over the Gulf which attenuates less solar irradiance compared to other cloud types. As expected from our previous work, there is good agreement between satellite and ground estimates of solar energy potential in San Antonio, Texas, and we assume this agreement applies to the surrounding larger region discussed in this paper. The study underscores the relevance of geostationary satellites for cloud/solar energy mapping and provides useful estimates on solar energy in Texas and surrounding regions that could potentially be harnessed and incorporated into the electrical grid.

Satellite-based estimate of the variability of warm cloud properties associated with aerosol and meteorological conditions

Abstract. Aerosol–cloud interaction (ACI) is examined using 10 years of data from the MODIS/Terra (morning orbit) and MODIS/Aqua (afternoon orbit) satellites. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) and cloud properties retrieved from both sensors are used to explore in a statistical sense the morning-to-afternoon variation of cloud properties in conditions with low and high AOD, over both land and ocean. The results show that the interaction between aerosol particles and clouds is more complex and of greater uncertainty over land than over ocean. The variation in d(Cloud_X), defined as the mean change in cloud property Cloud_X between the morning and afternoon overpasses in high-AOD conditions minus that in low-AOD conditions, is different over land and ocean. This applies to cloud droplet effective radius (CDR), cloud fraction (CF) and cloud top pressure (CTP), but not to cloud optical thickness (COT) and cloud liquid water path (CWP). Both COT and CWP increase over land and ocean after the time step, irrespective of the AOD. However, the initial AOD conditions can affect the amplitude of variation of COT and CWP. The effects of initial cloud fraction and meteorological conditions on the change in CF under low- and high-AOD conditions after the 3 h time step over land are also explored. Two cases are considered: (1) when the cloud cover increases and (2) when the cloud cover decreases. For both cases, we find that almost all values of d(CF) are positive, indicating that the variations of CF are larger in high AOD than that in low AOD after the 3 h time step. The results also show that a large increase in cloud fraction occurs when scenes experience large AOD and stronger upward motion of air parcels. Furthermore, the increase rate of cloud cover is larger for high AOD with increasing relative humidity (RH) when RH is larger than 20 %. We also find that a smaller increase in cloud fraction occurs when scenes experience larger AOD and larger initial cloud cover. Overall, the analysis of the diurnal variation of cloud properties provides a better understanding of aerosol–cloud interaction over land and ocean.

Time-dependent entrainment of smoke presents an observational challenge for assessing aerosol–cloud interactions over the southeast Atlantic Ocean

Abstract. The colocation of clouds and smoke over the southeast Atlantic Ocean during the southern African biomass burning season has numerous radiative implications, including microphysical modulation of the clouds if smoke is entrained into the marine boundary layer. NASA's ObseRvations of Aerosols above CLouds and their intEractionS (ORACLES) campaign is studying this system with aircraft in three field deployments between 2016 and 2018. Results from ORACLES-2016 show that the relationship between cloud droplet number concentration and smoke below cloud is consistent with previously reported values, whereas cloud droplet number concentration is only weakly associated with smoke immediately above cloud at the time of observation. By combining field observations, regional chemistry–climate modeling, and theoretical boundary layer aerosol budget equations, we show that the history of smoke entrainment (which has a characteristic mixing timescale on the order of days) helps explain variations in cloud properties for similar instantaneous above-cloud smoke environments. Precipitation processes can obscure the relationship between above-cloud smoke and cloud properties in parts of the southeast Atlantic, but marine boundary layer carbon monoxide concentrations for two case study flights suggest that smoke entrainment history drove the observed differences in cloud properties for those days. A Lagrangian framework following the clouds and accounting for the history of smoke entrainment and precipitation is likely necessary for quantitatively studying this system; an Eulerian framework (e.g., instantaneous correlation of A-train satellite observations) is unlikely to capture the true extent of smoke–cloud interaction in the southeast Atlantic.

Analysis of aerosol effects on warm clouds over the Yangtze River Delta from multi-sensor satellite observations

Abstract. Aerosol effects on low warm clouds over the Yangtze River Delta (YRD, eastern China) are examined using co-located MODIS, CALIOP and CloudSat observations. By taking the vertical locations of aerosol and cloud layers into account, we use simultaneously observed aerosol and cloud data to investigate relationships between cloud properties and the amount of aerosol particles (using aerosol optical depth, AOD, as a proxy). Also, we investigate the impact of aerosol types on the variation of cloud properties with AOD. Finally, we explore how meteorological conditions affect these relationships using ERA-Interim reanalysis data. This study shows that the relation between cloud properties and AOD depends on the aerosol abundance, with a different behaviour for low and high AOD (i.e. AOD < 0.35 and AOD > 0.35). This applies to cloud droplet effective radius (CDR) and cloud fraction (CF), but not to cloud optical thickness (COT) and cloud top pressure (CTP). COT is found to decrease when AOD increases, which may be due to radiative effects and retrieval artefacts caused by absorbing aerosol. Conversely, CTP tends to increase with elevated AOD, indicating that the aerosol is not always prone to expand the vertical extension. It also shows that the COT–CDR and CWP (cloud liquid water path)–CDR relationships are not unique, but affected by atmospheric aerosol loading. Furthermore, separation of cases with either polluted dust or smoke aerosol shows that aerosol–cloud interaction (ACI) is stronger for clouds mixed with smoke aerosol than for clouds mixed with dust, which is ascribed to the higher absorption efficiency of smoke than dust. The variation of cloud properties with AOD is analysed for various relative humidity and boundary layer thermodynamic and dynamic conditions, showing that high relative humidity favours larger cloud droplet particles and increases cloud formation, irrespective of vertical or horizontal level. Stable atmospheric conditions enhance cloud cover horizontally. However, unstable atmospheric conditions favour thicker and higher clouds. Dynamically, upward motion of air parcels can also facilitate the formation of thicker and higher clouds. Overall, the present study provides an understanding of the impact of aerosols on cloud properties over the YRD. In addition to the amount of aerosol particles (or AOD), evidence is provided that aerosol types and ambient environmental conditions need to be considered to understand the observed relationships between cloud properties and AOD.

Seasonal variability of warm boundary layer cloud and precipitation properties in the Southern Ocean as diagnosed from A‐Train data

AbstractThe extensive cloudiness and resulting high albedo of the Southern Oceans (SO) are predominantly due to the occurrence of widespread marine boundary layer clouds. Recent work finds correlations between biogenically enhanced cloud condensation nuclei concentrations and cloud droplet number concentrations derived from passive satellite data. The active remote sensors in the A‐Train have created a unique and long‐term record of these clouds that include vertical profiles of radar reflectivity and microwave brightness temperature from CloudSat that can be combined with solar reflectances from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. We examine this data record using a unique algorithm to infer warm‐topped cloud and precipitation properties. We find seasonal variations in cloud properties where summer season clouds demonstrate higher cloud droplet number concentrations on average and require higher liquid water contents to produce similar precipitation rates.

A novel diagnostic technique to investigate cloud‐controlling factors

Cloud properties depend on the local meteorological conditions. This relation is quantified using a simple framework which expands on previous methodologies. This novel diagnostic technique is applied in order to understand and assess the relative contribution of various environmental factors to the observed interannual and seasonal variations in cloud properties. In this analysis framework, sea surface temperature, sea level pressure, and, to a lesser extent, the humidity field are the largest contributors to the interannual cloud anomalies in the equatorial Pacific. In addition, in contrast to previous studies, we find that the interannual variability of the ratio of shortwave to longwave cloud radiative effect (N) is independent of the tropopause temperature. Finally, we quantify the role of different factors which are thought to influence the seasonal cycle of the stratocumulus in the subtropics. Off the California coast, the lower tropospheric stability (LTS) better describes the seasonal low‒cloud amount changes than the estimated inversion strength (EIS). When the spatial variation in LTS (or EIS) and low‒cloud amount is considered within a season, a different relationship is found that depends on the season. The nonlinear relationships between environmental factors and cloud properties can, to a certain extent, be described within the novel framework proposed.

Modeling the Response of Marine Boundary Layer Clouds to Global Warming: The Impact of Subgrid-Scale Precipitation Formation

Abstract An important parameter often adjusted to achieve agreement between simulated and observed radiative fluxes in climate models is the rain formation efficiency. This adjustment has been justified as accounting for the effects of subgrid-scale variability in cloud properties, but this tuning approach is rather arbitrary. This study examines results from a regional climate model with precipitation formation schemes that have been conventionally tuned, and it compares them with simulations employing a recently developed scheme that uses satellite observations to explicitly account for the subgrid-scale variability of clouds (“integral constraint method”). Simulations with the International Pacific Research Center’s Regional Atmospheric Model (iRAM) show that the integral constraint method is capable of simulating cloud fields over the eastern Pacific that are in good agreement with observations, without requiring model tuning. A series of global warming simulations for late twenty-first-century conditions is performed to investigate the impact of the treatment of the precipitation formation efficiency on modeled cloud–climate feedbacks. The results with the integral constraint method show that the simulated cloud feedbacks have similar patterns at all the model resolutions considered (grid spacings of 50, 100, and 200 km), but there are some quantitative differences (with smaller feedbacks at finer resolution). The cloud responses to global warming in simulations with a conventionally tuned autoconversion scheme and with the integral constraint method were found to be quite consistent, although differences in individual regions of ~10%–30% are evident. No conclusions can be drawn from this study on the validity of model tuning for thick clouds and mixed phase or ice clouds, however.

Evaluating WRF-Chem aerosol indirect effects in Southeast Pacific marine stratocumulus during VOCALS-REx

Abstract. We evaluate a regional-scale simulation with the WRF-Chem model for the VAMOS (Variability of the American Monsoon Systems) Ocean-Cloud-Atmosphere-Land Study Regional Experiment (VOCALS-REx), which sampled the Southeast Pacific's persistent stratocumulus deck. Evaluation of VOCALS-REx ship-based and three aircraft observations focuses on analyzing how aerosol loading affects marine boundary layer (MBL) dynamics and cloud microphysics. We compare local time series and campaign-averaged longitudinal gradients, and highlight differences in model simulations with (W) and without (NW) wet deposition processes. The higher aerosol loadings in the NW case produce considerable changes in MBL dynamics and cloud microphysics, in accordance with the established conceptual model of aerosol indirect effects. These include increase in cloud albedo, increase in MBL and cloud heights, drizzle suppression, increase in liquid water content, and increase in cloud lifetime. Moreover, better statistical representation of aerosol mass and number concentration improves model fidelity in reproducing observed spatial and temporal variability in cloud properties, including top and base height, droplet concentration, water content, rain rate, optical depth (COD) and liquid water path (LWP). Together, these help to quantify confidence in WRF-Chem's modeled aerosol-cloud interactions, especially in the activation parameterization, while identifying structural and parametric uncertainties including: irreversibility in rain wet removal; overestimation of marine DMS and sea salt emissions, and accelerated aqueous sulfate conversion. Our findings suggest that WRF-Chem simulates marine cloud-aerosol interactions at a level sufficient for applications in forecasting weather and air quality and studying aerosol climate forcing, and may do so with the reliability required for policy analysis.

The spectra of low-temperature atmospheres: Lessons learned from brown dwarfs

AbstractIndirect and direct spectroscopic studies of exoplanets are beginning to probe the most prominent chemical constituents and processes in their atmospheres. However, studies of equivalently low-temperature brown dwarfs have been taking place for over a decade. In this review, I summarize some of the results of detailed spectroscopic, photometric and polarimetric studies of brown dwarfs of various effective temperatures, surface gravities and metallicities, highlighting the insight gained into the chemistry and cloud formation of planetary-like atmospheres. Nonequilibrium chemistry and variations in cloud properties are singled out as critical ingredients for interpreting exoplanet spectra. I also discuss recent direct spectroscopic studies of exoplanet atmospheres, both close to and widely-separated from their host star, and propose that the latter are better analogs to isolated brown dwarfs.

Modelling microphysical and meteorological controls on precipitation and cloud cellular structures in Southeast Pacific stratocumulus

Abstract. Microphysical and meteorological controls on the formation of open and closed cellular structures in the Southeast Pacific are explored using model simulations based on aircraft observations during the VAMOS Ocean-Cloud-Atmosphere-Land Study Regional Experiment (VOCALS-REx). The effectiveness of factors such as boundary-layer moisture and temperature perturbations, surface heat and moisture fluxes, large-scale vertical motion and solar heating in promoting drizzle and open cell formation for prescribed aerosol number concentrations is explored. For the case considered, drizzle and subsequent open cell formation over a broad region are more sensitive to the observed boundary-layer moisture and temperature perturbations (+0.9 g kg−1; −1 K) than to a five-fold decrease in aerosol number concentration (150 vs. 30 mg−1). When embedding the perturbations in closed cells, local drizzle and pockets of open cell (POC) formation respond faster to the aerosol reduction than to the moisture increase, but the latter generates stronger and more persistent drizzle. A local negative perturbation in temperature drives a mesoscale circulation that prevents local drizzle formation but promotes it in a remote area where lower-level horizontal transport of moisture is blocked and converges to enhance liquid water path. This represents a potential mechanism for POC formation in the Southeast Pacific stratocumulus region whereby the circulation is triggered by strong precipitation in adjacent broad regions of open cells. A simulation that attempts to mimic the influence of a coastally induced upsidence wave results in an increase in cloud water but this alone is insufficient to initiate drizzle. An increase of surface sensible heat flux is also effective in triggering local drizzle and POC formation. Both open and closed cells simulated with observed initial conditions exhibit distinct diurnal variations in cloud properties. A stratocumulus deck that breaks up due solely to solar heating can recover at night. Precipitation in the open-cell cases depletes the aerosol to the extent that cloud formation is significantly suppressed within one diurnal cycle. A replenishment rate of cloud condensation nuclei of order 1 mg−1 h−1 is sufficient to maintain clouds and prevent the boundary layer from collapsing the following day, suggesting that some local and/or remote aerosol sources is necessary for POCs to be able to last for days.
