Determination of vanadium in biological matrices by flame atomic absorption spectrometry with activated carbon enrichment

For the determination of vanadium in biological materials by flame AAS an enrichment is described which comprises chelation with oxine and adsorption on activated carbon: The relative standard deviation for 10 μg V/L was found to be 6% (n=15).

Development of a simultaneous gas chromatographic method for the analysis of copper, nickel and vanadium at the ultra-trace level

The development of a sensitive gas chromatographic method for simultaneously determining trace amounts of copper, nickel and vanadium in biological materials is described. The reagent is the fluorinated Schiff base 1,1,1,1′,1′,1′-hexafluoro-4,4′-(1-methylethane-1,2-diyldiimino)bis(pent-3-en-2-one), which is readily prepared in its isomerically pure form. Suitable column components are identified and the stability of chelates and optimum chromatographic conditions are discussed. Detection limits are about 5 pg for each of these elements. Some preliminary analytical results are also presented.

Systematic differences in the determination of vanadium in Standard Reference Material 1571 Orchard Leaves

The application of SRM 1571 Orchard Leaves as an international reference material for vanadium in biological materials is hampered by the lack of consensus with respect to its true vanadium concentration. Instrumental neutron activation analysis, and neutron activation analysis with pre- or post-irradiation chemical separation were found to give consistently different results. This is attributed to the presence of a significant part of the vanadium in an insoluble, but partly exchangeable, inorganic form. Differences in published results by several different analytical methods could be explained completely in this way. The SRM 1571 is not recommended as a reference material for vanadium in biological materials. 3 tables.

Determination of submicrogram amounts of vanadium in biological materials by extraction with N-cinnamoyl- N-2,3-xylylhydroxylamine and flameless atomic-absorption spectrometry with an atomizer coated with pyrolytic graphite

A highly sensitive and simple method for determination of vanadium in plants and biological samples by solvent extraction and flameless atomic-absorption spectrometry with a carbon tube coated with pyrolytic graphite is described. After digestion of the sample, vanadium is separated by extraction of its N-cinnamoyl- N-2,3-xylylhydroxylamine complex into carbon tetrachloride from 6 M hydrochloric acid medium. The method can be used to determine vanadium in plants and biological samples with average recovery of 94% and coefficient of variation of 14%. The sensitivity (1% absorption) is estimated to be 4 × 10 −11 g.

Determination of vanadium in biological materials at nanogram level by neutron activation analysis

A method for the destructive activation analysis of vanadium in biological samples at the nanogram level has been developed, based on 3.75 min52V. A totally post-irradiation procedure is used, consisting of wet ashing and solvent extraction with N-benzoyl-N-phenylhydroxylamine (BPHA). Time of separation is about 12 min and the radiochemical purity excellent. Possible nuclear interferences were also investigated. The procedure was checked by an alternative method, using preashing and pyrosulfate fusion, and at higher levels, by nondestructive analyses. Results are presented for some 15 standard (or proposed) standard reference materials.

Spectrophotometric determination of vanadium in biological materials with N-benzylbenzohydroxamic acid

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of vanadium in biological materials with N-benzylbenzohydroxamic acid is proposed. The method is highly selective for vanadium and is free from rigid control of reaction conditions. No separation of iron prior to the determination of vanadium is necessary. Cu(II), Co(II), Ni, Mn(II), Cr(III), Ce(IV), Zr, Mo(VI), Ca, Sr, Ba, UO 2(II) and many others metal ions do not interfere. Fairly large quantities of Ti(IV) and W(VI) are tolerated.
