Using Artificial Intelligence tools to create a smart university to employ digital transformation in the sustainability of higher education development Applied study, White Nile University - Sudan, 2023

The study aimed to introduce artificial intelligence and design a smart technology educational environment that works to develop digital capabilities and smart digitization in universities by using artificial intelligence methods to achieve the maximum level of education according to different capabilities and skills, raise the value of higher education and improve the quality of education. The problem of the study lies in the presence of real challenges in The field of education, due to the lack of interest in developing innovative tools to meet the needs of society. The study relied on the descriptive analytical approach to define and analyze the conceptual framework for building a smart university that has all the elements of development and electronic renaissance. The study reached the most important results, including the impact of digital transformations on smart universities, and digital transformation achieves many goals. For students and faculty members, digital transformation helps faculty members cope with the increasing number of students, provides thousands of educational sites, and the most important recommendations of the study are preparing an integrated vision between the components of digital transformation and applying it to the smart university, providing the necessary insurance and security of information in the smart digital environment.

Islamic Educational Values in the Verses of the Song “Mars Nahdlatul Wathan” by TGKH. Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid from Lombok

This research aims to analyze the Islamic educational values embedded in the verses of the song "Mars Nahdlatul Wathan" written by TGKH. Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid. This study employs a literature analysis method to comprehend the meaning and messages conveyed in the song lyrics and to identify the Islamic educational values reflected in its verses. The research findings indicate that "Mars Nahdlatul Wathan" contains several highly relevant Islamic educational values. Firstly, the song emphasizes the importance of unity, solidarity, and harmony in society, values that are greatly emphasized in Islam. Secondly, the song encourages the preservation and love for the nation and homeland, in accordance with Islamic teachings on patriotism. Thirdly, it underscores the significance of education and knowledge enhancement as a means to advance society, aligning with Islamic teachings on the importance of knowledge and education. Lastly, the song calls for striving for the welfare of society, reflecting the values of jihad in Islam, not only in a physical sense but also in the sense of working for the common good. Thus, this research concludes that "Mars Nahdlatul Wathan" by TGKH. Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid contains several Islamic educational values that can serve as a guide for the community in understanding and practicing Islamic teachings in daily life and in building a better society.

“The Mysterious Disappearance”: assessment of a sustainability-themed virtual educational escape room in higher education

PurposeIn this study, we assessed the educational value and efficacy of a virtual educational escape room (VEER), called “The Mysterious Disappearance”, for training pre-service teachers.Design/methodology/approach“The Mysterious Disappearance” was developed ad hoc and contains various activities and puzzles focussing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research will evaluate the design quality and satisfaction of 193 participants regarding the VEER, their perceptions of game-based learning (GBL) and analyse which soft skills are most used and which valence typology (positive/pleasant or negative/unpleasant emotions) has the greatest impact on players’ experience. Descriptive, exploratory factor and inferential analyses are employed.FindingsThe study indicates that the VEER is rated very positively by pre-service teachers. Overall satisfaction levels are high, and the resource and methodology are perceived as favourable. The design quality of the resource is also well rated, with participants perceiving it as a challenging but engaging and well-balanced. Participation in the VEER shows several benefits, especially in cognitive and motivational areas. The participants demonstrated high levels of soft skills utilisation. The resource elicits predominantly positive and pleasurable emotions. Finally, there is a positive perception towards GBL among pre-service teachers, both as students and future teachers.Originality/valueThis study employs a multivariate analysis, using a questionnaire comprising three scales. This study’s dual focus on participants’ perceptions, as current Students and Future teachers, provides insights into their potential role as designers/implementers. Findings contribute to the ongoing development of academic hypotheses, particularly by highlighting the increased motivation linked to VEER use and its positive impact on learning. Designed with the SDG framework, the game enhances teachers' engagement with the 2030 Agenda, supporting their professional development and promotes values related to sustainability. The VEER was developed ad hoc by one of the authors, and the study has potential implications for numerous fields and areas of research.

Fostering Inclusive Learning and 21st‐Century Skills: Creating Translanguaging Spaces in University Content and Language Integrated Learning Courses

ABSTRACTContent and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an innovative educational approach applicable to diverse settings. CLIL promotes 21st‐century skills, including logical and critical thinking, problem‐solving, creativity, collaboration, and cross‐cultural awareness. In Asia, particularly Japan, CLIL has predominantly focused on English language acquisition, often overshadowing its broader goal of developing other skills. Accordingly, a new language course has been developed to enhance both language proficiency and 21st‐century skills among Japanese and English learners at an international university in Japan. This study presents findings from a larger case study that examines student and teacher experiences within the new CLIL framework, leveraging translanguaging pedagogy. Analyzing student reflections and interviews, this study highlights the role of translanguaging in enhancing 21st‐century skills such as leadership, critical thinking, and collaboration, particularly in group projects. However, deeply ingrained monolingual beliefs pose challenges to students fully embracing translanguaging methods, despite their educational value. This study provides insights for educators and policymakers advocating innovative language programs, particularly in fostering global citizenship and diverse skillsets essential in contemporary contexts. It also highlights the importance of integrating language learning with broader skill development in multicultural educational environments.

Negotiating authenticity: experiences of student influencers on social media

ABSTRACT Research has shown that contemporary youth face a variety of challenges, ranging from social belonging to striving towards perfection in body image and personal achievements in all areas of life. Student life is expected to add further complexities, reflected in a need to negotiate new social connections, spatial environments and academic and future-oriented challenges. This project engaged with a unique and hard-to-reach group of students who define themselves and are defined by others as social media influencers. The objective was to explore the ways in which the participants’ experiences of the influencer marketing industry and its pressures for authenticity intersect with the experiences of being a student. The article draws on 13 in-depth interviews with UK-based student influencers with profiles on different platforms (including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and the Little Red Book) and discusses how these students navigate the increasingly complex field of monetisation of their content, while maintaining a sense of authenticity and success as a student. It reveals the moments of transition encountered by students when constructing oneself as a successful student who produces content that has strong educational value, and the intricate processes entailed in preserving one’s brand on social media platforms.

Analysis of the Sustainable Role of Higher Education in the Economy

Higher education injects impetus into the sustainable development of the economy by improving the structural and functional order of the education system. From the perspective of economics, the higher salary level of higher education graduates not only indicates the improvement of personal value, but also directly reflects the added value of education. The purpose of this paper is to explore the current state of higher education development in Asian countries and to provide an in-depth analysis of how it can promote economic growth through three main pathways. The value-added evaluation mechanism of higher education encompasses the entire educational process, and its core function is to diagnose, improve and monitor the quality of education to ensure that the ultimate goal of education is to achieve quality, equity and sustainable development. Therefore, the government should expand and deepen the scope and depth of the implementation of the higher education revitalization plan in an orderly manner, continuously improve the compatibility of the plan with the current situation of local development, and continuously improve the support system for the higher education revitalization plan to promote economic growth. This will help optimize the allocation of higher education resources, narrow the economic development gap, and achieve shared prosperity.

Geology, Archaeology, and Historical Studies of the Late 16th Century Plinian Eruption of Raung Volcano: A Potential Case for Disaster Geotourism in Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark, East Java, Indonesia

The enigmatic major eruption in the late 16th century, believed to have originated from Raung, the most active stratovolcano in the Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark in East Java, Indonesia, has ignited significant debate among researchers and historians due to its profound impact on the region. This research aims to substantiate Raung as the likely source of the major eruption by integrating geological, archaeological, and historical data. This study synthesizes current findings and explores ongoing debates surrounding historical volcanic activities. Eruption parameters suggest that the late 16th century eruption exhibited a Plinian type, characterized by an explosive eruption column reaching the stratosphere, widespread pumiceous tephra fallout, and pyroclastic density current (PDC). Stratigraphic succession reveals that the eruption occurred in five phases, with deposits from 10 eruptive units. These deposits are mainly concentrated on the northwestern flank of Raung. Archaeological findings, historical records, and local legends converge to pinpoint the occurrence of this catastrophic event in the late 16th century. These diverse sources estimate that the eruption resulted in approximately 10,000 casualties, marking it as one of the most significant volcanic disasters in the past 500 years. The implications of this eruption extend beyond historical documentation, providing a critical case study for advancing disaster mitigation strategies through geotourism in the geopark area. Moreover, the eruption record outcrops identified in this study can be proposed as potential new geosites within the Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark, enhancing its educational and touristic value. We propose the Jebung Kidul, Alas Sumur, and Batu Sappar sites as potential disaster-based geosites, considering that these sites record the eruption process and preserve archaeological structures. This addition would not only commemorate the historical event but also promote awareness and preparedness for future volcanic activities in the region.

Pharmaceutical Advertising and Public Perceptions in Saudi Arabia

Introduction: As the pharmaceutical advertising landscape evolves with digital advancements, this study examines public awareness and perceptions of medication advertisements in Saudi Arabia. It focuses on the effects of regulatory frameworks and evaluates how they influence public understanding and attitudes toward these advertisements. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an electronic survey in Saudi Arabia in December 2023. The survey was distributed on social media platforms and reached a diverse sample of 440 participants. It covered public perception and attitudes toward drug advertisements, knowledge of regulatory laws, and preferences regarding advertising mediums. Results: Out of the 440 participants in the study, who were primarily employees with bachelor’s degrees, there was a clear awareness of drug advertisements. The average age of the group was 33 years, and a significant portion (71.1%) held a bachelor’s degree, with 51.1% being employed. The findings revealed that 25.5% of participants frequently noticed drug ads, while 22.7% saw them very often. Although many found the ads informative, there were significant concerns about unrealistic expectations and the risk of overmedication; 89.8% believed the ads set unrealistic expectations about the effectiveness of medications. Additionally, 60.7% thought that celebrity endorsements might mislead the audience, and 91.1% felt that ads should provide more detailed information about potential risks and side effects. Regarding preferred advertising platforms, mobile apps and websites were favored (47%), followed closely by social media (46.4%). A striking 93.2% of participants believed that drug ads on social media should be subject to stricter regulations, and 96.4% wanted more proactive monitoring of online advertising. Many also reported using other sources, such as medical review sites, to verify medication information. Conclusions: Pharmaceutical advertising in Saudi Arabia must balance ethical transparency with educational value. The influence of digital platforms underscores the necessity for stricter regulation and accurate information dissemination. A collaborative approach is essential to align advertising practices with public health interests and regulatory standards.

The pre-school period is not only the stage of preparation for school life, but also the most responsible and important period of human life, during which the foundation of all moral values is laid in a person. It is known that the foundation of moral and spiritual qualities should be laid from an early age. Be-cause the future of the new world depends on how the growing generation acquires spiritual and moral qualities. It is from this point of view that today the human factor is gaining more and more importance in our globalized world. We all know that a country with citizens who are physically and morally healthy, culturally and intellectually high is considered the richest country in the world.

Teamwork and Leadership Development in Physical Education

This paper explores the mechanisms of teamwork and leadership development in physical education with the aim of revealing their importance in individual growth and team success. Firstly, the paper defines the concepts of teamwork and leadership, emphasising their key role in modern society. Next, the paper analyses how physical education can effectively develop these competencies through practical activities and educational strategies. Specifically, teamwork is developed in physical activity through joint training, tactical co-ordination during matches and division of roles, while leadership is promoted through role-playing, challenging activities and feedback and reflection. In addition, the paper discusses the major challenges faced during implementation, including resource constraints, low student participation, inadequate teacher training and cultural differences, and proposes solutions accordingly. By optimising resource allocation, increasing student participation, enhancing teacher training and promoting cultural integration, physical education can more effectively promote teamwork and leadership development. The paper concludes by summarising the comprehensive value of physical education in fostering teamwork and leadership, and calls for sustained attention and solutions to implementation challenges.

A plant mutant screen CURE integrated with core biology concepts showed effectiveness in course design and students' perceived learning gains.

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) provide students with valuable opportunities to engage in research in a classroom setting, expanding access to research opportunitiesfor undergraduates, fostering inclusive research and learning environments, and bridging the gap between the research and education communities. While scientific practices, integral to the scientific discovery process, have been widely implemented in CUREs, there have been relatively few reports emphasizing the incorporation of core biology concepts into CURE curricula. In this study, we present a CURE that integrates core biology concepts, including genetic information flow, phenotype-genotype relationships, mutations and mutants, and structure-function relationships, within the context of mutant screening and gene loci identification. The design of this laboratory course aligns with key CURE criteria, as demonstrated by data collected through the laboratory course assessment survey (LCAS). The survey of undergraduate research experiences (SURE) demonstrates students' learning gains in both course-directed skills and transferrable skills following their participation in the CURE. Additionally, concept survey data reflect students' self-perceived understanding of the aforementioned core biological concepts. Given that genetic mutant screens are central to the study of gene function in biology, we anticipate that this CURE holds potential value for educators and researchers who are interested in designing and implementing a mutant screen CURE in their classrooms. This can be accomplished through independent research or by establishing partnerships between different units or institutions.

Character Education Values in The Book of Jāmi'ul Ulūm Wal Hikam and Its Relevance to Commendable Morals in Madrasahs

The hadeeths in the book of Jāmi'ul ulūm wal hikam contain many character values that can be applied to learning commendable morals in the Madrasahs. Studying character values from the hadeeths of the Prophet Muhammad is very important to understand their practical application in learning commendable morals in Madrasahs. This research aims to describe the character values in the hadeeths in the book of jāmi'ul ulūm wal hikam and their relevance to the material of commendable morals in Madrasahs based on KMA No. 183 of 2019. This research aims to identify and describe the character values in the book of Jāmi'ul ulūm wal hikam and its relevance to the material of commendable morals in Madrasahs. This research uses a library research method and qualitative paradigm with a semantic approach to describe the character values in the book of Jāmi'ul ulūm wal hikam. Data collection techniques include reviewing literature, books, notes, and reports on the topics. The analysis technique used in this research is content analysis to describe the character values in the book of Jāmi'ul ulūm wal hikam. Then, the research results are relevant to Madrasahs's moral material. The results show seventeen character values in the book of jāmi'ul ulūm wal hikam. These values are sincerity, wara', affection, restraint of speech, self-control, kindness to animals, humility, shame, istiqāmah, cleanliness, patience, generosity, obedience, zuhud, helpfulness, honesty, and tawakal. The character values of sincerity, obedience, istiqāmah, and patience are relevant to all commendable moral materials in Madrasahss as companion character values in each commendable moral material. Twelve character values apply to the material of commendable morals in the related values: sincerity, affection, restraint of speech, kindness to animals, humility, istiqāmah, cleanliness, patience, obedience, helpfulness, honesty, and tawakal. Enhancing Reusability Practices in Massive Online Open Courses

Over the past decade, the emergence of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) has profoundly transformed the distance learning landscape, capturing the attention of both higher education and professional institutions. This surge of interest has not only spurred the development of innovative teaching and learning methods but has also led to a re-evaluation of content production and reuse strategies. In fact, when producing MOOCs, multiple resources and efforts are dedicated to creating a considerable amount of learning material. This is often housed within the learning environment, which serves as a sort of repository and it is accessible by learners throughout the course. However, due to a lack of management support or internal organisational structure, the use of this material sometimes remains limited to the existence of the MOOC, causing it not to be actively employed and exploited after the course has ended. Lately, issues regarding MOOCs’ content management have raised critical questions about the long-term sustainability, reusability and management of the created online learning material even after the end of the online course. By using as a case study the three interlinked MOOCs on European History, Law and Governance developed in the framework of the KU Leuven programme in European Studies and the effort invested in both the planning and afterlife of the MOOC, this paper provides an overview of the formulas adopted to enhance learning content reusability. Drawing from KU Leuven’s extensive experience in creating humanities-focused MOOCs, this collection of interconnected online courses represents a novel attempt at offering a series of educational courses that are designed to complement each other not only in terms of content but also in terms of content management. Also, by contributing to the discussion on MOOCs' reusability this paper intends to emphasise the importance of establishing clear guidelines to enhance educational content reuse, ultimately contributing to the long-term educational value of MOOCs.

Advancing radiology education for medical students: leveraging digital tools and resources

This study evaluates diverse educational resources to address the gaps in diagnostic radiology education for medical students, aiming to identify tools that enhance theoretical knowledge and practical diagnostic skills. Employing a multi-faceted review, we analyzed digital platforms, academic databases, and social media for resources beneficial to medical students in radiology, assessing their accessibility, content quality, and educational value. Our investigation uncovered a broad spectrum of resources, from foundational platforms to advanced simulation tools, varying in their approach to teaching radiology. Traditional resources provide essential theoretical knowledge, while digital tools, including interactive case studies and multimedia content, offer immersive learning experiences. Notably, resources integrating machine learning and social media facilitate dynamic, peer-to-peer learning and up-to-date case discussions. Despite the minimal current focus on VR, its role in enhancing interactive learning is notable. The diversity in educational tools highlights the evolving nature of radiology education, reflecting a shift towards more engaging and practical learning methodologies. Identifying and integrating a variety of educational resources into radiology education can significantly enhance learning outcomes for medical students, preparing them for the complexities of modern diagnostic radiology with a well-rounded educational approach.

The Value, Obstacle and Strategy of Digital Empowerment Physical Education in Primary School

With the title of "The Value, obstacle and Strategy of physical education teaching in primary school with digital empowerment", this paper discusses the value, obstacle and optimization strategy from three angles. Through the research, it is found that digital technology can bring great value in primary school physical education, including the advantages of improving teaching effect, enhancing student participation, personalized learning and all-round development. However, digital physical education also faces some obstacles, such as the problem of capital investment, the lack of teachers' digital literacy and professional ability, and the unequal investment in educational resources. In order to optimize the digital effect of primary school physical education, six optimization strategies are proposed: increasing funding investment and sponsorship, enhancing teachers' digital literacy and professional ability, optimizing the investment and distribution of educational resources, promoting students' and parents' participation and recognition, formulating privacy and security policies, and establishing a digital primary school physical education evaluation system in the digital era. Through the implementation of these strategies, the digital development of primary school physical education can be further promoted and the teaching quality and students' comprehensive literacy can be improved.

The importance of historically reflexive critical thinking for police education: United States criminal justice and the brutalization of African Americans

Abstract The value of college education for US police officers has been contemplated since at least the 1920’s, yet the importance of critical thinking has only recently attracted scholarly attention. Modern police training is frequently led by experienced former practitioners; however, as “insiders” they may be less likely to critically evaluate the role police play, and have played, in maintaining unjust and discriminatory systems, particularly for African Americans. This article considers existing scholarship on police training and education, highlighting and demonstrating the importance of historically reflexive critical thinking.

Evaluating the efficacy of a cost-effective, fully three-dimensional-printed vertebra model for endoscopic spine surgery training for neurosurgical residents.

A fused deposition modeling three-dimensional (3D)-printed model of the L4-5 vertebra for lumbar discectomy was designed. The model included separately printed dura mater, spinal cord, ligamentum flavum, intervertebral disc (from thermoplastic polyurethane), and bony structures (from polylactic acid), and the material cost approximately US$ 1 per model. A simple plumbing endoscope was used for visualization. Dura mater injury was assessed by painting two layers on the dura mater, which peeled off with trauma. Endoscopic spine surgery is a subject of high interest in neurosurgery given its minimally invasive nature; however, it has a steep learning curve. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a cost-efficient 3D-printed model when teaching this technique to neurosurgery residents. Only a few studies have investigated the efficacy of such a model. Eight residents with >2 years of training participated. Residents performed the procedure bilaterally and twice at 1-week intervals. From the 32 surgeries, four were excluded because of facet removal (as it widened the surgical corridor), leaving 28 surgeries for analysis. Initial surgeries demonstrated a mean operation time of 21 minutes 18 seconds (standard deviation [SD], 2 minutes 32 seconds), which improved to a mean of 6 minutes 45 seconds (SD, 37 seconds) in the fourth surgery (F(3, 17)=19.18, p <0.0001), demonstrating a significant reduction in surgical time over successive surgeries. The median area with the paint removed decreased, from 161.80 (85.55-217.83) to 95.13 mm2 (12.62-160.54), (F(2.072, Inf)=2.04, p =0.128); however, this was not significant. Resident feedback indicated high satisfaction with the educational value of the model. The developed fully 3D-printed model provides a viable and scalable option for neurosurgical training programs, enhancing the learning experience while maintaining low costs. This model may be an excellent stepping stone for learning lumbar spine endoscopy, acclimating to the two-dimensional view, progressing to cadaver models, and, eventually, independent surgery.

Reliability and Educational Suitability of TikTok Videos asa Source of Information on Sleep and Awake Bruxism: ACross-Sectional Analysis.

TikTok contains many videos about bruxism that may help raise the level of awareness on the topic. However, the quality of these videos' information represents the greatest concern. The present cross-sectional analysis aimed to systematically assess the reliability and educational suitability of TikTok videos as a source of information on bruxism. TikTok was searched for relevant videos uploaded until 6 March 2024, using the hashtags #bruxism, #grindingteeth and #jawclenching. Independent pre-calibrated operators conducted video inclusion and data collection, noting videos' characteristics, source, popularity, content, reliability (assessed through the DISCERN scoring system) and educational value (assessed through the Global Quality Score [GQS]). The Kruskal-Wallis test was adopted to compare videos from different sources. Videos with low and high educational value were compared using the Mann-Whitney U-test. Tests were considered significant when the p-value was < 0.05. A total of 105 bruxism videos were analysed. Most videos covered bruxism management and clinical features, and more than 60% were uploaded by healthcare professionals. According to the DISCERN and GQS scoring, the videos' reliability and educational value were judged to be very poor and low, respectively, but on average they were higher for videos uploaded by healthcare professionals compared to those uploaded by laypeople. When comparing videos with high educational value to those with low educational value, differences were found in popularity, content and reliability. The present results suggest the need for greater control of information disseminated on social media to fulfil its potential role in educating laypeople about bruxism.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in Heritage Education: A Multimedia Approach to ‘Phra Aphai Mani’

Even though classic literature has cultural and educational value in heritage education, students often have trouble becoming interested because of the archaic language, a lack of good learning materials, the idea that the literature is not relevant, and complicated plots. This research aims to enhance heritage education by identifying barriers and drivers in youth engagement with classic Thai literature and exploring how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles could be applied to increase motivation in learning classic literature through multimedia. Ten interviews with experts, 100 on-site questionnaires filled out by students aged 15–25 years, and a multimedia e-book were used together in this mixed-methods study. As a case study, the researchers asked both experts and students to read the Thai classic poem “Phra Aphai Mani: Escaping from the Sea Witch” and make suggestions for how it could be better. The results show that there are barriers to heritage education, such as ‘the story is not connected to the present’ (mean = 4.52/5), ‘archaic vocabulary and language barriers’ (mean = 4.36/5), and ‘learning materials’ (mean = 4.25/5). Surprisingly, Thai students showed more positive attitudes towards literature courses than expected based on international trends. Key drivers for enhancing heritage education include ‘classic literature in modern, easy-to-read language’ (mean = 4.65/5), ‘including multimedia’ (mean = 4.58/5), ‘the plot/story adapted to the current era’ (mean = 4.50/5), and ‘new presenting technologies’ (mean = 4.49/5). Next, as an innovative way to improve heritage education, this study developed a free e-book titled “Phra Aphai Mani: Escaping from the Sea Witch”, which includes motion graphics and other multimedia elements. This research contributes to knowledge by demonstrating how UDL can be applied to classic literature within heritage education, enhancing understanding of student needs, and creating more effective, inclusive multimedia teaching methods for preserving and transmitting cultural heritage.
