Potensi Hutan Mangrove Sebagai Daya Tarik Wisata (Studi Kasus Pada Hutan Mangrove Idaman Kec. Tarowang, Kab. Jeneponto, Prov. Sulawesi Selatan)

The Research of the potential of mangrove forests as an educational tourism is a survey research that focuses on the richness of mangrove forest ecosystems and its potential as an economic driver for the community through educational tourism activities. This research was conducted in the Idaman mangrove forest, Tarowang sub-district, Jeneponto South Sulawesi province. Data collection techniques used were through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the characteristics of the Idaman mangrove forest consist of various species of mangrove plants, birds, and other mangrove ecosystems that are very potential as a tourist attraction. The potential of the mangrove forest has not been optimized by the communities around tourism area so that it has not yet optimally contributed as an economic source. The constraints in developing of the Idaman mangrove forest as a tourist attraction are the absence of a community-based tourism development and management model on the attractiveness of the Idaman mangrove forest, the low creativity and capacity of the community, as well as limited tourism support facilities. The recommended model for developing mangrove forests is educational tourism based through nursery activities and planting of mangrove forests for conservation, utilization and diversification of mangrove forest products as culinary and handicraft products.

ANALISIS KONDISI SOSIAL EKONOMI MASYARAKAT SEKITAR TAMAN NASIONAL GANDANG DEWATA

Gandang Dewata National Park was designated as a conservation area because it has biodiversity and a unique ecosystem. Ecosystem types in this area are based on altitude or topographic conditions, namely Lowland Forest, Lower Mountain Forest, Upper Mountain Forest and Sub-Alpine Forest. This research aims to obtain an explanation of the socio-economic problems of the community around the Gandang Dewata National Park (TNGD), the level of community dependence on the National Park area and the contribution of income from the park to the total income of farmers. The research was carried out in Mamasa Regency in the TNGD Area, West Sulawesi Province. The method used in this research is interviews. Respondents in this study were chosen randomly. Data was analyzed descriptively qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of this research show that basic data and information regarding the socio-economic conditions of the people of Taupe Village, one of the TNGD buffer villages, shows that out of the 84 respondents interviewed, the socio-economic conditions of the people of Taupe Village work as farmers. 90% of this is because the village's irrigation conditions are still in good condition. The community is dependent on the area, namely 56% know the village boundaries and the location where the community lives is outside the area. Apart from that, the community's dependence on forests consists of rice fields and gardens. Utilization of forest products in the form of firewood, honey, aloes, bamboo, rattan and game products. Commodities based on agricultural, livestock, plantation and forestry products are coffee, cloves, cinnamon, patchouli, honey, cassava pork, aloes and broiler chicken. Most people (77%) do not know about TNGD

Utilization of non-timber forest products as alternative sources of food and income in the highland regions of the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

In developing countries, studies on sustainable preservation of forests (including non-timber forest products NTFPs) have been poorly carried out for promoting alternative income generating activities (IGA) to alleviate pressure on praised resources by local communities living close by protected areas. This study aimed at (1) inventorying NTFPs exploited by local communities around the Kahuzi Biega National Park (KBNP), (2) assessing their therapeutic values and nutritional contributions, and (3) analyzing their rural and urban market values to determine their potential as alternative income sources as well as the major constraints in their exploitation. Individual interviews were conducted with 790 rural and urban households in Kabare, Walungu, Kalehe, and Bukavu City, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) coupled with focus group discussions with key stakeholders around KBNP. Street vendors, restaurants, hotels, and market owners were also interviewed on uses, awareness of the nutritional and therapeutic values, and factors hindering NTFPs wide use in Bukavu urban environments. Physicochemical analyses were also conducted on main NTFPs to determine their nutritional values. Results showed that local populations around KBNP exploit at least 55 NTFPs, mainly for self-consumption as food, feed, and medicine. NTFPs represent the second most important income source around KBNP, accounting for 23.3 % of total households’ income after agriculture that generates 25.7 % of total households’ income. Income from NTFP trade was primarily used for food supply (29 %), investment in small businesses (19.6 %), children's education (17.7 %), and healthcare expenses (5.1 %). These NTFPs had varying nutritional values (in terms of proximate composition, essential minerals, and bioactive compounds). Solanum nigrum (24.9 %), Termitomyces robustus (18.0 %), Amaranthus viridis (17.6 %), and Piper nigrum (16.9 %) are valuable sources of proteins while Zingiber officinale (25.5 %), T. robustus (15.4 %) and P. nigrum (14.3 %) are rich in dietary fibres. Piper nigrum (37.0 and 128.3 mg/kg) and Basella alba (35.1 and 108.7 mg/kg) had the highest zinc and iron contents, respectively. Some of the most nutritious NTFPs, such as S. nigrum, Dioscorea spp., and P. nigrum had high contents in anti-nutritional elements and should be processed properly to maximize bioavailability. Besides, NTFPs created employment opportunities for collectors, vendors, supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants both in rural and urban areas. Though varying with rural communities, the main challenges in the NTFP value chain were low market values (48.6 %), short shelf life (22.5 %), and excessive taxation (19.1 %) while in urban areas, seasonality (36.9 %), scarcity (17.7 %), and prohibiting high prices (17.7 %) were the major limiting factors. This study highlights the significant role played by NTFPs in providing healthy and nutritious food and income for households surrounding the KBNP, and thus emphasizes the necessity for their promotion as alternative income sources and healthy diets to alleviate poverty and hidden hunger around the KBNP.

Community forest, environment conservation and rural livelihood

The study analyses the economic benefit to rural people derived from the community forest and the role of community forest in the livelihood of the rural people. For this purpose, Khajure Community Forest of Dang district was selected. This article analyses interactions among economic development, the environment, and natural resource use pattern. Community forestry promotes sustainable management of forests by the local community for their collective benefits and promotes equal rights regardless of caste, ethnicity and gender. Community Forest Users’ Group highly depend on CF for their basic households needs such as fuel wood, grass, fodder and timber. Community participation in managing forest has contributed to forest conservation, scientific utilization of forest products and social inclusion which ultimately fosters community ownership in management and use of natural resources. But there are problems in CF governance and benefit sharing. The main issues of community forest are elite dominance in decision-making, social exclusion, and unequal benefit sharing. Rural people go through the exploitation of forest resource haphazardly for their survival. Exploitation of natural resources, including forest resource, contribute to global environmental problems and climate change. Electric cook stoves could be a good, clean fuel source while also helping to reduce the trade deficit. Scheduled firewood collection has resulted to shortage of fuel wood and has increased dependency on cow dung cake for daily cooking. Socio-economic condition of community members has remained as the obstacle for fuel shifting towards modern and clean energy that produces no smoke and no indoor air pollution, and thus, reducing respiratory diseases. Fuel transition has great positive impact on forest conservation,too.

The utilization and contribution of timber and non-timber forest products to livelihoods under a changing climate in the Limpopo River Basin

Forest products contribute immensely to rural livelihoods and household income. However, their contribution to climate change adaptation in semi-arid areas, and the limited ecosystem management capacities of rural communities are poorly examined. We examined the influence and challenges of cash income derived from forest products on livelihoods and climate change adaptation using data from 130 household surveys, 20 participatory mapping exercises, several in-depth interviews, and field observations in the Limpopo Basin of Botswana. Households derived livelihoods and/or income from Mopane caterpillars, firewood, timber, palm plants, wild fruits, thatch, medicinal plants, natural dyes, natural pastures, and game meat. Mopane caterpillars, firewood, and other forest products featured in the top ten sources of household income and contributed weighted monthly income of BWP 1,647.27 ± 1,519.04, BWP 1,110.02 ± 1,980.05, and BWP 780.56 ± 1,360.32, respectively (US$1 ≈ BWP13.4). A higher proportion of households (62.3%) were in the low-income category, earning income below BWP5,000/month. Income derived from Mopane caterpillars and firewood made a significant difference between low-income and high-income households (p = 0.006). Generally, higher proportions of high-income households adopted climate change adaptation measures than proportions in the low-income category, indicating the influence of cash income on household adaptations. However, significant differences were only observed in cropland expansion, purchasing of supplementary livestock feed, drilling boreholes/wells, and use of drip irrigation (p < 0.05). We discuss the potential threats, such as the unsustainable harvesting of forest products, caused by an increasing need for cash incomes and the interconnectedness with distant urban markets. Such threats add to the institutional and biophysical challenges, further limiting prospects for effective adaptation in the Limpopo Basin of Botswana. We call on the government to capacitate and strengthen traditional authorities—as custodians of local resources—in the regulation, management, and conservation of forest products to make them more sustainable adaptation options.

Development strategy of candlenut oil business toward a new paradigm for the utilization of non-timber forest products

In an effort to realize productive and sustainable forest management in a unified and comprehensive forestry development unit so that the economic (Sustainable Production), social (Sustainable Social and economic) and environmental (Ecological Sustainable) benefits for all parties based on the identification of the potential superiority of regional commodities, Forest Management Unit (KPH) has compiled a business development plan to improve the economic community in and around the forest, through the development of various productive businesses utilizing timber and non-timber forest products (NTFPs). Therefore, it is necessary to develop a business strategy to overcome the weaknesses and threats by utilizing internal and external strengths and opportunities in efforts to develop sustainable rural agro-industry. The study was conducted at a pilot location of the KPH Kulawi candlenut oil processing business, Central Sulawesi Province. Communication and observation techniques were carried out using a questionnaire through individual interviews and group interviews. While the business development strategy is carried out through focus group discussions (FGDs) involving stakeholders, namely the KPH, raw material producing farmers, processing farmers, target village governments, local governments, the business world and academics with a total of 15 respondents. Based on the SWOT Matrix, The choice of strategies that can be applied are resource optimization, increasing product quality at competitive prices, increasing managerial skills and HR skills and efficiency in production costs. While policies that can support business development include easy access to capital, facilitating export bureaucracy mechanisms and the existence of business associations as a source of market and price information.

Analysis of the Contribution of Utilization of Non-Wood Forest Products to the Income (Case Study at Some Village Communities Around the Forest of North Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia)

The contribution of forest in North Tapanuli Regency can increase the economic income of the local community through the use of Non-Wood Forest Products (NWFPs). Most village communities around the forests of North Tapanuli Regency have used NWFPs for generations to meet their needs. This study aims to analyze the value of the contribution of NWFPs to the income of village communities to determine the level of community dependence on these forest resources. Knowing the value of the contribution of NWFPs can be used as recommendations for policymakers to allocate increasingly scarce NWFPs and distribute the benefits of NWFPs fairly and optimally. This research was conducted in five Districts in North Tapanuli Regency considering that there are still many people who live depend on NWFPs. The research method was carried out by field observations and interviews using questionnaires, with a total sample of 98 respondents. Respondents were taken using the purposive sampling method. Respondent identification was done through the snowball technique. Data analysis of the contribution value was carried out by calculating the total income of the community, such as incomes sourced from NWFPs and other income. The results showed that the monthly income of villagers outside of NWFPs was in the range of IDR 1,000,000 – 2,000,000. Then the contribution of NWFPs to the income of villagers around the forest was 74.9% of income outside of NWFPs

Identifikasi Jasa Ekosistem dan Valuasi Nilai Manfaat Langsung untuk Mendukung Pengelolaan Pariwisata Berkelanjutan (Studi Kasus di Kee Cukang Taneuh Desa Kertayasa Kabupaten Pangandaran)

The concept of sustainable development is a concept that links economic development, environmental quality, and social equity. These three aspects are the main pillars that must be considered in a balanced and proportional manner so that sustainable development can be optimally successful. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with direct observation/observation techniques in the field as well as interviews with the managers of the Cukang Taneuh Essential Ecosystem Area (KEE) and local community leaders. Observations were made by exploring the areas included in the Cukang Taneuh KEE and directly recording the types of ecosystem services available. The data was obtained through an inventory of the types of ecosystem services contained in the Cukang Taneuh KEE accompanied by a description of the benefits of each of these ecosystem services. Data analysis on the value of direct benefits from ecosystem services in the area is carried out through the Total Economic Value (TEV) valuation approach. The results show that there are four types of ecosystem services in Cukang Taneuh KEE, namely provisioning services, regulatory services, cultural services, and supporting services. Then for the value of direct benefits for the value of direct benefits obtained from KEE Cukang Taneuh obtained from utilization as a tourist spot, utilization of fishery resources, and utilization of forest products with a total value of Rp. 11,787,625,000.00 per year.

Economic Implications of Credit Assessment on Arable Crops and Non-Forest Timber Products Utilization in South-South, Nigeria

The study examined the effect of credit on arable crop production and non – forest timber products utilization. Data from 315 respondents were acquired through structured questionnaires and summarized using descriptive statistics while regression model was employed in evaluating the effect of credit on arable crop production. Results obtained proved that the age range of the respondents was 39-45 years, with a mean age of 40 years. Primary school educational level were in majority which were dominated by males that were mostly married, having a mean household size of 8 persons. The mean farm size was 0.6ha with a mean farming experience of 10 years. Farmers relied more on informal credit sources for crop production and non – forest timber product utilization. The result of the regression analysis proved a positive significant relationship between the amount of credit received and output. The study recommends that Governmental and non-governmental credit issuing stakeholders should make credit readily available to farming households and farmers at the rural level should be sensitized and informed about credit facilities at their disposal.

Training on Making Antiseptic Liquid Soap for Mangrove Type Pedada (Sonneratia cassiolaris) to the Community in Tani Baru Village, Anggana District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan Province

One of the efforts to increase public awareness of the importance of preserving mangrove ecosystems in the Mahakam Delta is by developing the capacity of the community to be able to take advantage of the potential of existing mangroves in the Mahakam Delta region. When the community is able to obtain economic value from the utilization of non-timber mangrove forest products, it is hoped that public awareness of the existence and sustainability of mangrove forests will increase. One of the mangrove products that has economic value and is a daily need for the community is an antiseptic liquid soap with the addition of pedada (Sonneratia cassiolaris) mangrove fruit extract. Antiseptic liquid soap with pedada fruit extract can be utilized and meet the sanitation needs of the community in Tani Baru Village, Anggana District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency as one of the villages in the Mahakam Delta region in particular. With the training on making bacada fruit antiseptic liquid soap, the aim is for the community to be able to increase their creativity in exploring pedada-type mangroves into a product that provides added value and high economic value. The results that have been achieved in this training are that the community is able to make their own antiseptic liquid soap for their daily needs and can open up business opportunities in entrepreneurship

SOSIALISASI HASIL HUTAN BUKAN KAYU (HHBK) SEBAGAI SOLUSI MASALAH KEHUTANAN DAN EKONOMI MASYARAKAT

Non-Timber Forest Products are a potential that can be managed to overcome forestry and community economic problems. Improvement of eucalyptus oil processing and management can affect the income of eucalyptus oil farmers. The purpose of this community service activity is to provide knowledge about improving the quality of eucalyptus oil through improving eucalyptus oil processing methods and utilizing eucalyptus leaf waste as an energy source through making charcoal briquettes. The stages of the activity are: 1) The initial approach is carried out with the head of the Buru FMU to facilitate meetings with the KPH-assisted farmer groups to be addressed, 2) Implementation of counseling, lectures and questions and answers about various knowledge related to the utilization of Non-Timber Forest Products. How is eucalyptus oil processed and how is the management carried out by eucalyptus oil farmers, and 3) Observation of eucalyptus oil cooking places to see the raw materials and boilers used. This activity was carried out cooperatively and well because the Waspait village community was very enthusiastic about their curiosity which was reflected when participating in the counseling which was carried out by building dialogue in the form of questions related to the eucalyptus oil processing activities carried out.

The Conference of Parties - 27 (COP-27) Agreement As an Instrument of State Policy in Handling Deforestation: A Comparative Study of Sweden and Indonesian Governments

The climate crisis is a threat to countries in the world. One of the factors causing the climate crisis is deforestation. Indonesia as the third largest tropical forest country in the world certainly has an impact on the world's climate. Indonesia is a victim of deforestation, moreover reforestation of forest land does not match the rate of deforestation. This research is a normative legal study, using comparative, conceptual, and regulatory approaches. This study discusses the implementation of the Conference of Parties - 27 (COP-27 ) agreement as the basis for establishing policy instruments in Indonesia in dealing with deforestation and looks at Sweden as a comparison in handling deforestation through a policy instrument scheme. This study found that Sweden, through its green politics concept, was able to control the harvesting and utilization of forest products effectively. COP-27 has environmental control principles, one of which is the global net zero principle, namely the earth's temperature is no more than 1.5 degrees. it is hoped that the principles in COP-27 will guide the Indonesian government in making legal policy instruments for environmental management, especially handling deforestation. This research suggests that, like Sweden's green politics, Indonesia needs to present strategic policies through the Green Environmentally Concept policy through policy instruments, be it through laws and regulations, government regulations, or presidential regulations to the level of regional regulations.

NILAI EKONOMI DAN KONTRIBUSI HASIL HUTAN BUKAN KAYU TERHADAP PENDAPATAN MASYARAKAT (STUDI KASUS PADA DESA HALABAN KECAMATAN LAREH SAGO HALABAN, KABUPATEN 50 KOTA, SUMATERA BARAT)

Community needs are increasing day by day. Utilization of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) has started to become one of the focuses of community development. If the local community understands the economic value and contribution of NTFP utilization, then the Halaban Village community will have the best potential and utilization of NTFPs. Remember the importance of forest resources for community income, then necessary to do a study related to the economic value and contribution of NTFPs. The purposes of research are to : (1) Calculate the economic value of non-timber forest products used by the Halaban village community, Lareh Sago Halaban District, 50 Cities Regency. (2) Analyze how the contribution of non-timber forest products to the income of the community in Halaban Village, Lareh Sago Halaban District, Lima Puluh Kota Regency. The data collection methods used in this research were observation, interview, questionnaire, and documentation. The results showed that the types of NTFPs that contributed to the Halaban village were rubber, cardamom, cinnamon, gambier, and areca nut. The total economic value of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) used by the Halaban Village community is Rp. 4,591,137,979,-/year. The total income obtained by the people of Halaban Village is Rp.7.304.337.979,-/year. The total economic value of NTFPs utilized by the community was Rp.7.304.337.979,-/year. NTFPs contribute 63% to community income.

Socioeconomic aspects of utilizing non-timber forest products in Myanmar: A review

Approximately 70 % of Myanmar’s population resides in rural areas, and most rural households rely on forest resources for their livelihood. Characterizing patterns of forest resource utilization by forest-dependent people is critically important for developing strategies to mitigate forest degradation and deforestation as well as for forest conservation in Myanmar. We reviewed the socioeconomic aspects of non-timber forest product (NTFP) utilization in Myanmar to evaluate the current status of our knowledge of NTFPs and their contributions to the livelihoods of rural people in Myanmar to clarify paths for commercializing NTFPs. Our findings confirmed that the rural population heavily depends on NTFPs. In light of the important role that NTFPs play in enhancing the livelihoods of rural communities in Myanmar, more studies of NTFP commercialization and forest and biodiversity conservation practices, especially regional field studies, are needed.

Analysis Analysis of Income Level of The Nipa Roofing Craftsman (Nypa fruticans Wurmb) in Kumai Subdistrict, Central Kalimantan

One of the efforts to increase income is utilizing non-timber forest products in the form of home industries. One of the non-timber forest products utilized by the community and have a business opportunity is the Nipa plant (Nypa fruticans Wurmb). It grows along rivers near estuaries to rivers with brackish water influenced by tides and is included in the mangrove/brackish forest type. The research aimed to analyze the utilization level of nipa (Nypa fruticans Wurmb), examine the income level of the nipa roof craftsman, measure the contribution level of the nipa roofing business to family income, and analyze the relationship between the income level and the utilization of nipa (Nypa fruticans Wurmb). Data was sampled using the census method. The respondents were the craftsmen of nipa roofs (only ten people were still active in making nipa roofs). The required data includes the utilization of nipa resource products, production costs, total revenue, selling price, income from the nipa roofing business, and income from other family members. The results showed that the total production of nipa palm roofs was 303,840/year. The average income of nipa roof craftsmen was Rp10,732,200/year. The income contribution of the nipa roof craftsmen to family income was medium (55%). The utilization of nipa forest resource products had a very strong and positive relationship in increasing the income of nipa roof craftsmen with a correlation value of 0.842.

The importance of development planning for the utilization of non-timber forest products in supporting the sustainability of protected forest area: A case study of pesawaran Forest Management Units (FMU), Lampung province, Indonesia

The dynamic concept of ecosystem sustainability functions to maintain the benefits of social, economic, and ecological. A protected forest is a type of forest that functions as a life support system. This function is specific, so there is a need for a strategy to develop and maintain the sustainability of natural resources. The forest management unit (FMU) is a regulation on management at the site level. One of the KPHs in Lampung province, namely the Pesawaran FMU, has the potential for non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and environmental services. This research aims to analyze the forest utilization management plan in the Pesawaran FMU register. The number of primary respondents is three based on the Snowball Sampling technique. The analytical method used is the descriptive qualitative analysis based on information on primary and secondary data. It is supported by a SWOT analysis to analyze preferences for forest product utilization plans in the Pesawaran FMU according to conditions in the field. The results showed that all respondents stated that the Pesawaran FMU area had potential natural resources in the form of NTFPs and environmental services. It is necessary to optimize community empowerment so that they have the competence to develop this potential to be utilized as a creative economic business in the form of products selling value and using environmental services as tourist objects. There is a need for stakeholder involvement related to the coordination of management and utilization permits which can increase communication and reduce the risk of conflict.

Forest structures and carbon stocks of community forests with different forest management in Maha Sarakham Province, Thailand

Abstract. Wannasingha W, Gomontean B, Uttaruk Y. 2023. Forest structures and carbon stocks of community forests with different forest management in Maha Sarakham Province, Thailand. Biodiversitas 24: 799-809. Forest management comprises strategies and practices to regulate human activities and the utilization of forest products. Management and regulations have various effects on forest structure, tree diversity and carbon accumulation. This study was conducted in three community forests with different levels of rule regulations and managed duration in the northeast of Thailand. Thirty of 20×20 m plots were placed for recording all trees with diameter at breast height (dbh) ?4.5 cm and &gt;1.3 m height. One hundred and fifty plots of soil samples at 0-25 cm and 25-50 cm depths were also collected for organic carbon analysis. Forest carbon stocks were calculated from the sum of carbon in aboveground biomass (AGB) and soil organic carbon (SOC). The results showed that tree density, basal area, Shannon diversity index and evenness index of the best practices (BP) plots were higher than the plots in which moderate (MP) and slight practices (SP) were applied. Tree heights of the BP and MP forests were higher than the SP forest. The L-shape of dbh class distribution in all community forests means they were secondary forests; tree density was highest in the small dbh class and declined in the bigger size class. The bigger dbh class tree showed higher aboveground carbon (AGC) despite the lower tree density in all community forests. Most of the BP forest plots had the highest carbon stock (93.89, 80.52 and 54.96 Mg C ha-1) and CO2 absorption (344.25, 295.23 and 201.53 Mg CO2equiv.) compared with the others. Our results demonstrate the importance of forest management in affecting forest structures, carbon sequestration and carbon dioxide absorption from the atmosphere to reduce and mitigate climate change.

Analisa dan Realisasi Sumber Energi Terbarukan Pikohidro Wilayah Posko TNKS

TNKS has a very important role in forest management, from sustainability to the utilization of forest products for the surrounding communities that use TNKS land for coffee and cocoa plantations. So that forest sustainability can be maintained and can actually provide sustainable benefits to the community around the forest. The TNKS Center provides coffee grinding machines, which can be used by the coffee plantation community. To drive the coffee grinder, a generator is used, where the fuel is carried directly by the coffee planters. To provide sustainable benefits, river water is used as alternative energy to create a pico-hydro power plant, as a driving force for coffee grinding machines, because the TNKS post is only used by the forest police from morning to evening, so there is no need for lighting at night. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a site survey to determine the location of the weir, channel, and turbine housing. Likewise, data collection of water discharge and different heights of falling water from the tranquilizer tank to the turbine house. From the results of the survey and calculations obtained a capacity of 6 KW, using a crossflow turbine with a head of 12 meters and a discharge of 100 liters/sec. The Bangun Rejo TNKS Command Post is a camping ground location that supports the construction of PLTPh which needs to be realized immediately. With the existence of this pico-hydro power plant, the community of coffee planters, no longer needs to buy fuel and no longer use generators, but pico-hydro electricity at the TNKS post.

Understanding indigenous knowledge in sustainable management of NTFPs agroforestry in Indonesia: a case of Southern Sumatra

Peoples’ utilization and management of non-timber forest products in a sustainable manner is influenced by traditional knowledge and regulations. Communities near forests in Southern Sumatra, Indonesia, continue to rely on forest resources to cover their basic needs. However, as more people use the forests to collect non-timber forest products, their availability is decreasing. Qualitative research methods and literature studies were applied in this paper to document local communities in the provinces of South Sumatra, Bengkulu, and Jambi in applying their traditional knowledge and local wisdom to manage dragon’s blood (Daemonorops spp.) and cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii Blume). These priceless NTFPs (non-timber forest products) played a significant role in supporting people’s livelihoods and protecting the natural resources in their forest area. The community implemented a sustainable harvesting system to maintain the availability of resources so that the community still has the opportunity to collect NTFPs as a source of income in the future. Along with the decrease in these natural resources, the community has begun to develop an agroforestry system of NTFPs, coffee, and other crops. This domestication activity was expected to ensure the sustainability of production and to prevent overexploitation of forest resources. In the long run, involving indigenous knowledge was needed in maintaining natural resources to achieve sustainable development of NTFPs agroforestry in Indonesia.

Contribution of the Utilization of Non-Timber Forest Products to Farmers’ Income in Forest Management Unit

Forest Village Community Organizations (Lembaga Masyarakat Desa Hutan - LDMH) Samudro Wonoasri and LMDH Tangkil Indah is an institution in partnership with Perhutani that has utilized the potential of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in plots 66A and plots 46B. This study aims to determine the contribution of NTFPs to farmers’ income in both locations (plots). Data collection on respondents was carried out using a comprehensive census technique. The total number of research respondents was 180 people, with 85 farmers in plot 66A RPH (Resor Pengelolaan Hutan - Forest Management Resort) Sumberkembang and 95 farmers in plot 46B RPH Lebakharjo. The results showed three dominant types of non-timber forest products used by farmers, namely coffee, cloves, and bananas. Meanwhile, the contribution of NTFPs to the average income yr-1 of farmers in the 66A RPH Sumberkembang plot is 79.07 %. The contribution of NTFPs to farmers’ average income yr-1 in the 46B RPH Lebakharjo plot obtained a percentage of 93.58 %. The average income yr-1 for all farmers in both locations (plots) of the study shows that NTFPs contribute significantly to the economy and that all farmers are highly dependent on the presence of non-timber forest products (NTFPs).
