Knowledge, Perceived Risks and Factors Affecting the Utilization of Cervical Screening Services among Females in Owerri North LGA

Background: Globally, cervical cancer screening services involves procedures put in to prevent and checkmate complications in the cervix. Lack of cervical screening services can lead to cervical cancers, one of the leading causes of death in women, which begin in cells on the surface of the cervix. The objective of this study was to determine the knowledge, perceived risks and factors affecting the utilization of cervical screening services among females in Owerri North LGA. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study was employed in this research. The multi-stage simple random sampling procedure was employed to obtain a sample size of 424 respondents and a self-administered semi structured questionnaire was used to gather data for this study. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used in the analysis of the data gotten from the study. Results: The results of this study revealed that majority, 27.8% (118) of the women represented age groups between 25-34 and 45-49. For the level of knowledge of cervical screening services, most of the respondents 86.4% (366) demonstrated knowledge of cervical screening, while 13.6% (58) denied. The study also showed a good number of females, about 41.2% (175), agreed that it was risky to avoid uptake of cervical screening. Majority of the respondents reported demonstrated their approval to utilize cervix screening if offered a chance (85.9%), while 14.1% (60) denied based on results from level of knowledge of cervical screening. 19.3% (82) reported family/husband acceptance, 18.7% (79) said “distance to facility” as some of the factors affecting the utilization of cervical screening practice. Further results for the test of a statistically significant association between socio-demographic characteristics and level of knowledge of cervical screening services, age (p=0.010), parity (p=0.0008), level of income (p=0.0092) and level of education (p=0.0327) were associated with level of knowledge of cervical screening services. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study showed good knowledge of the perceived risks of cervical screening among the females but this did not translate to willingness to utilize screening and awareness campaigns must provide accurate information on cervical screening so that females can make informed choices was recommended by this study

Awareness and Utilization of Cervical Cancer Screening Among Primary Health Care Workers in Ilesa, Osun State

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the cervix which is a cylinder that connects the lower part of a woman’s uterus to her vagina. The study investigated the awareness and utilization of cervical cancer screening services among primary health care workers in Ilesa, Osun state. The study adopted the descriptive cross-sectional research design. The sample size was determined by Taro Yamane, which was 192. Proportionate random sampling technique was used to select female primary healthcare workers. The instrument for data collection was a self-structured questionnaire which was divided into three sections. The instrument was subjected to face and content validity. Cronbach’s Alpha reliability coefficient for the constructs ranged from 0.72 to 0.85. The descriptive statistics was employed to answer the research questions, while Pearson correlation and chi-square analysis were employed to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings showed that level of awareness and utilisation of cervical cancer screening services was moderate. There was significant relationship between the level of awareness and utilization of cervical screening services among primary health workers (r = .272, p = .000<0.05). Only age (x2 = 25.533, p = .003 < 0.05) and ethnicity (x2 = 18.520, p = .005 < 0.05) were related to level of awareness of cervical screening services while age (x2 = 28.549, p = .000 < 0.05), marital status (x2 = 9.077, p = .011< 0.05), monthly income (x2 = 19.347, p = .000 < 0.05) and educational qualifications (x2 = 51.004, p = .000 < 0.05) were related to level of utilisation of cervical screening services among primary health workers. It was recommended among others that there is need to establish cervical cancer screening education programmes among health care professionals at all levels, especially among nurses.

Less than 10% of sex workers in developing countries are screened for cancer of the cervix annually. In Kenya, majority of sex workers present with advanced/invasive disease.

How Sexual History and Knowledge of Cervical Cancer and Screening Influence Chinese Women's Screening Behavior in Mainland China

Accurate information and knowledge about cervical cancer and screening importantly influence women's cervical screening participation. Sexual behavior plays a crucial role in human papillomavirus transmission and the subsequent development of cervical cancer. Indeed, the uptake of cervical screening among Chinese women is relatively low compared with other populations. To understand women's attendance pattern of cervical screening, knowledge about cervical cancer and screening, and factors influencing their utilization of cervical screening in mainland China. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect women's participation pattern for cervical screening, knowledge about cervical cancer and screening, sociodemographic information and sexual history, and barriers to participating in cervical screening. Married women and women who had had their first intercourse after the age of 21 years were significantly more likely to participate in screening. Screened women demonstrated a higher level of knowledge about the cervical screening procedure compared with nonscreened women (P = .002). Also, the scores of individual items such as women's knowledge of cervical screening and risk factors were significantly different between the 2 groups. The current system of free physical examinations for women in mainland China is a major motivator for women's utilization of cervical screening services. Chinese women's marital status and sexual history influence their screening behavior. Unmarried women who have ever had sex should be encouraged to have cervical screening, and consistent and appropriate information about the preventive nature of cervical screening and risk factors associated with cervical cancer should be provided to the general public.
