A Deep Approach to Deep Fake Detection

In recent months, the proliferation of free deep learning-based software tools has facilitated the creation of credible face exchanges in videos, resulting in what are known as "DeepFake" (DF) videos. While manipulations of digital videos have been demonstrated for several decades through the use of visual effects, recent advances in deep learning have significantly increased the realism of fake content and the accessibility with which it can be created. These AI-synthesized media, popularly referred to as DF, pose a significant challenge for detection. Detecting DF is a major challenge due to the complexity of training algorithms to spot them. In this work, we propose a detection approach using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). Our system leverages a CNN to extract features at the frame level, which are then used to train an RNN. The RNN learns to classify whether a video has been manipulated, detecting temporal inconsistencies between frames introduced by DF creation tools. We evaluate our approach against a large set of fake videos collected from standard datasets and demonstrate competitive results using a simple architecture.

Visual Effects in the Creation of Game-based Learning Content: Impact on Perception and Motivation in Learning

The research methods include analysis of scientific and educational sources, analysis of examples of successful use of visual effects in educational games, comparative analysis of the effectiveness of different types of visual effects, their interaction with the educational process, and identification of potential advantages or limitations in the use of these effects to improve the learning process. The scientific novelty lies in the analysis of the effectiveness and capabilities of visual effects that can significantly increase the interest and effectiveness of learning. Conclusions. The use of visual effects in the creation of game-based learning content and their impact on the learning process, as well as specific examples of the successful use of visual effects in educational games, are considered. The impact of these effects on learning and their role in improving the quality of the learning process is investigated. Creating visual effects for game-based learning content is a key element for enhancing learning and helps to increase the interest and engagement of students and learners. The use of visuals, animations, three-dimensional models, and other graphical elements helps to enhance understanding and memorization of complex concepts, especially when dealing with abstract or complex topics. The process of creating visual effects for game-based learning content includes planning, modelling, texturing, animation, and understanding the target audience. Planning visual effects requires a clear definition of the goals and scope of implementation, as well as structuring the effects to maximize the effectiveness and receptivity of the material. Potential directions for further research in this area have been identified to develop innovations in curricula and optimize and adapt these effects to different types of learning, in particular in the development of specialized tools for creating visual effects that would enable educators and developers to create high-quality educational content without specialized skills in graphic design. And also, the introduction of innovative technologies, including the use of virtual reality and augmented reality to create immersive learning environments.

The Use of Digital Effects on Storytelling in Turkish Cinema

Digitalization and the use of digital effects have an important place in the world and also in our country in many different disciplines. The transition from analog system to digital has affected all mass media. The use of digital technology in cinema also occupies an important place. American cinema was a pioneer when many movies switched from analogue to digital and started to use digital visual effects. The use of visual effects in Turkish Cinema, especially in action and drama genres, is remarkable. Although the words special effects, visual effects and CGI are used interchangeably, they have different characteristics. In these study, whether the use of digital visual effects supports storytelling or not was investigated by discourse analysis method. The most watched movies in Turkish Cinema between 2004-2017 were analyzed. With this method, it was also tried to determine how often popular movies use effects and which types of effects they use more. While effects supported the story in some movies, they caused negative impact on others. One of the important reasons for this reaction is that the effect is not included in the movie in a natural way. Possible economic difficulties in accessing technology can also lead to falling behind.

Deepfake Video Detection using Neural Networks

In today’s era, software tools based on deep learning have made the people work easier to make credible faces exchanges in video with little signs of manipulation, nicknamed “DeepFake” videos. Manipulation in digital media has been performed for decades through the appropriate use of visual effects; nevertheless, current breakthroughs occurred in deep learning have resulted in a significant rise to gain reality of fake material or contents using the simple ways. This are Artifical Intelligence-generated media (known as DF). Using tools of artificial intelligence to create the DF is an easy task. However, detecting these DF poses a significant barrier. Because it is difficult to teach the algorithm to detect the DF. Using Convolutional Neural Networks and Recurrent Neural Networks, we have made progress in detecting the DF. The system employs a Convolutional Neural network (CNN) on frame level to extract features. These observations are noted and this can train a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), which has the ability to learn and classify whether or not a video has been tampered with and identified the temporal irregularities in the frame introduced by DF tools. We demonstrate how utilizing a simple architecture, our system may get competitive outcomes in this job.

Using mock surveillance to quantify pest detectability prior to establishment of exotic leafminers

Quantifying detectability of exotic pests in local contexts is crucial for designing efficient and regionally relevant surveillance guidelines. Ironically, for areas most in need of preparedness advice, the study of detectability is hampered by the pest's absence. Here, we present a mock surveillance method whereby pest symptoms are simulated on plants, and the detection probability of visual inspection by practitioners is measured across a range of high priority regions at risk of incursions. Detectability of simulated leaf mining damage was found to be no different to real damage in surveillance trials conducted on the vegetable leafminer, Liriomyza sativae, a recently established pest in Australia. Additional trials confirmed that reducing the natural search speed of survey participants by half increased the odds of detecting a leaf mine by an estimated 3.0 times. However, as movement speed mediates a trade-off between the total area covered (the number of pest encounters) and sensitivity (detection probability for each encounter), we found that a survey effort of 10 s per transect meter enhanced field-level detection of L. sativae at a variety of abundances and available times for surveillance. This study demonstrates that mock surveillance trials, through their use of visual effects to mimic plant pest symptoms, can produce locally tested recommendations to enhance preparedness for exotic pests.

The article examines the main theses of the New Italian Epic Memorandum (2009) written by an Italian literary group “Wu Ming” as well as response of critics and literary theorists to its publication. The paper discusses the notion of the author’s voice and author’s persona in the context of the modern literary process, as well as other theoretical postulates of the group. The underlying idea of the Memorandum is the concept of the New Italian Epic (NIE), a body of relevant modern works written after 2000 and sharing common features. The main idea of the NIE concerns the development of narrative crossroads between literature, journalism, movies, animation, and documentary, with the use of visual effects, allegoric figures, simplified stylistics, and hyperrealism. The Memorandum also calls to abandon traditional literary forms and style. The grandmaster of snow: Martial arts, particle systems and the animist cinema

ABSTRACTBy looking at selected sequences from Wong Kar-wai's 2013 The Grandmaster in which characters, especially Gong Er (played by Zhang Ziyi), interact with the ubiquitous falling snow created by particle systems, this essay argues that the film's effects work visualizes the invisible flow of energy in traditions of Chinese visual culture, medicine and martial arts – all prominent or related motifs in the film's narrative. Moreover, such energy gets to be envisaged because of the very medium of the particle system, with its ideology closely related to a worldview based on animism and animation. Growing out of Wong's use of visual effects – specific to the cultural-historical context of the film – and the animist concept behind its technology, I offer a relational perspective for contemporary studies of visual effects to conceptualize the interactions between martial arts actions performed in front of the camera and digital work in the postproduction stage.

수십 년 동안 우리는 테마파크, 쇼핑몰, 길거리 등에 이를 보완하는 미디어나 이와 경쟁하는 미디어들을 채워왔다. 이런 공간들은 신문과 잡지, 라디오, 텔레비전, 영화를 재매개(remediation)하거나 이것들의 재매개(remediation) 대상이 되어왔다.[5] 하지만, 전통적 연극무대디자인은 재매개(remediation)가 이루어지지 못했다. 그로인해서 관람자에게 현전감(sense of presence)을 느끼게 할 수 없는 많은 문제점들을 수반하고 있다. 전통적 연극무대디자인의 문제점을 해결하기위한 재매개(remediation)의 체계적 연구가 필요한 시점이다. 본 연구는 전통적 연극무대디자인을 재매개(remediation)할 수 있는 해결방안을 제안한다. 이를 위해서 광범위하고 다양한 영역을 형성하고 있는 시각효과(Visual Effects)분야와 연극무대디자인분야의 협업을 중심으로 연구한다. 시각효과(Visual Effects)를 활용한 전통적 연극 무대디자인의 재매개(remediation) 제안은 두 학문 간의 긴밀한 협업의 체계화를 통한 경제적 고부가가치를 창출할 것이다. 또한 두 학문 분야의 협업의 체계화는 전통적 연극 무대디자인분야에서 관객들이 경험할 수 없었던 또 다른 커뮤니케이션의 패러다임을 만들어 나갈 것이다. For decades, we have filled our theme parks, shopping malls, a streets and etc. with complementary or competing medias. These spaces have remedied newspapers, magazines, radio, TV and film or have been the object for remediation. Because there has been no remediation in traditional theatrical stage design, many problems come along with the design, which makes audiences hard to feel the sense of presence. It's time to have systematic research to find a way out for the solution of traditional theatrical stage design. This study suggests the solutions for remediation of traditional theatrical stage design, so we are going to research with laying emphasis on the cooperative works between the fields of theatrical stage design and the Visual Effects par that forms extensive and diverse portions. The proposal for remediation of traditional theatrical stage design with practical use of Visual Effects will create economical higher value-added through the systematization of close and cooperative work between the fields of Visual Effects and theatrical stage design. In addition, the systematization of the cooperation of these two parts will make another communicative paradigm that audiences have never been able to experience before in traditional theatrical stage design.

In order to improve patients' understanding of prescribed medicines, we introduced the principles of universal design into drug information, basing this on the concept of providing easily understandable, user-friendly information in a visually appealing manner.In this report, we describe the use of visual effects in the provision of drug information. This was done according to the following 3 guidelines : 1) providing visual aids such as pictograms and illustrations in addition to text, 2) displaying information throughout the prescription rather than splitting it up into that pertaining to individual medicines, and 3) stratifying information according to clinical importance. The types of information to which this was applied included 1) information on substances used for pleasure (tobacco, alcohol, etc.), foods and beverages that are known to interact with prescribed medicines, for which patients should exercise caution, 2) information on daily living and the storage of prescribed medicines, and 3) information on the adverse effects of prescribed medicines.In a questionnaire survey conducted to compare our new format for providing drug information with conventional methods, most respondents thought that the great use of visual information made it easier to understand the drug information in their prescriptions. They were all very satisfied with it, and most hoped that it would be continued.In conclusion, applying universal design to the drug information would help greatly in achieving safe and effective drug therapy meeting the diverse needs of our aging society.

Visual effects as an aid in learning hierarchically organized information

The question at issue in this study is whether the use of visual effects may facilitate learning of hierarchically organized information in a computerized data base. Two versions of such a data base were constructed, one (VE) including visual effects emphasizing the direction of a move within the structure, and one (NE) without. The efficiency with which subjects (13-year-old students), using the VE ( N = 50) or NE ( N = 52) versions, learned the content of the data base was measured by a paper-and-pencil test. Scores on a battery of ability tests were used to form a hierarchical model of intelligence, in which a general factor was identified together with specialized verbal and spatial factors. In addition, a measurement model for the achievement test was fitted to the data. Performance was then related to the ability factors in a series of LISREL models. No main effects could be detected. However, differential effects were found, the main finding being that the addition of visual effects seems to have lowered the demands on general ability, a result that fits into a more general pattern of results from research on aptitude-treatment interaction (ATI) effects.
