The Impact Of Using Social Sites On Academic Performance For Students At Jordanian Universities

this research sought to determine the applications preferred by students and investigated the effect of using social sites on academic performance by ungraduated students in Jordanian universities. 400 questionnaires were distributed to undergraduate students in Jordanian universities. The results showed a statistically significant relationship between use of social network sites and performance of academic. Facebook, WhatsApp, youtube were the favored social network sites choices among students while LinkedIn and Instagram were the least reported choices. Also, the excessive use of social sites without real supervision from teachers or careful planning of employing its applications may affect the academic performance of Jordanian university students. Additionally, students must be guided and learn to properly manage their time when spending social network sites for purposes of education. The results of this research may be employed to mention effective ways to integrate social network sites into learning activities without affecting student performance.

Effectiveness of using mobile phones in teaching the English language at Jazan University

Technology is highly changing the globe in various sectors including education. Universities are advancing and adopting technology in imparting knowledge and skills in learners. Mobile phones have been evolving and since the invention of smartphones, much is being developed within the education sector as far as teaching is concerned. The research aims to assess the effectiveness of using smartphones in teaching the English language at Jazan University. It further evaluates if the application of smartphones would be more effective when compared to the adoption of the lecture method in teaching English in Saudi Arabia. The research was conducted using a survey that was done on 134 participants from Jazan University. The responses from the lectures were used to make descriptive analysis, correlation, and regression, and finally conclusions alongside recommendations. It was found that smartphone use has a significant impact on the mode of teaching English. Smartphones do enable lecture to create video clips for their learners while learners can record themselves and share the clip with their lecture for assessment and guidance. There is also massive use of social sites that can easily be accessed by the use of smartphones. The results indicate that instructors use smartphones to send emails to students. They still engage them on matters concerning English course content and other important issues on learning English which makes the process of learning interactive and engaging. The findings indicate that lecturers are encouraging the use of smartphones in the learning process meaning that students will adapt and cope with its use because it makes teaching more effective.

Prospects and Challenges of Using Social Sites in Higher Education

Social networking is a virtual thread of grouping individuals. The present study has explored the prospects and challenges of using social sites in higher education. The study involved mixed method for collecting comprehensive information about the issue. A survey was conducted to randomly selected 21 university teachers and 279 university graduate and post graduate students. A significant difference was found between the perceptions of students having technological facilities in their universities and those having no facilities in higher education. Most of the participants supported the statements related to utility and possibility of using social sites for disseminating course schedules, outlines of courses, reading materials (audio, video, photofigures, print), discussing course problems, exchange of educational ideas and looking for better opportunities of admissions and career. The qualitative part of the study employed a series of focus group discussions conducted with students and teachers of graduate and post graduate level to highlight the opportunities and issues involved in disseminating instruction through social sites. Participants opined that social sites could provide flexible, versatile, attractive and creative educational activities. The major concerns came to light were publicity distraction, irregular use of social sites and extinction of specialized curricula by the universities. It was recommended that universities should take well planned initiatives with specially designed courses and generate interactive communities for class communication to ensure the use of social sites for educational purposes.

The influence of symbolic consumption on experience value and the use of virtual social networks

This research examines how symbolic consumption can be extended to the consumption of experiences. As shown in the results, when customers think that one experience reinforces their identities, they perceive higher value. In addition, perceived value influences satisfaction and satisfaction influences revisit intention. Furthermore, the results indicate that, when consumers want to materialize their experience, they use the basic tool of virtual social networks. In connection with that, consumers use more of their digital social networks when they perceive congruence between their experience and identity. It is indicated as well that higher social value and satisfaction increases the intensity of the use of social sites. Based on the results, some managerial guidelines are included.

The Relationship Between Internet Usage, Socioeconomic Status, Subjective Health and Social Status

This study strives to analyze the concept of digital divide within the context of Pakistan. In this study, the differential internet usage has been studied through the impact of age, income, and having an online job on the average daily usage of internet per person in Pakistan. A questionnaire was developed for the survey and data was collected through purposive sampling technique. A total of 500 filled questionnaires were returned. The findings of the survey report a higher use of internet among young people as compared to aged people. Furthermore, higher income class within the sample is found to be a major user of internet, and having an online job increases the internet usage hours by manifolds. In addition, the findings of the study also depict that youngsters are more inclined towards the use of social websites which is also a source of social satisfaction for its users

Exploring the Use and the Impacts of Social Media on Teaching and Learning Science in Saudi

This article reports on a study conducted on Saudi middle school science teachers and students. The study implemented a 46-item Likert-scale questionnaire, aimed to investigate teachers’ vs. students’ positions and views in regards: smart devices use and access, the current use of social websites, the use of the web, views of the impact of social media on education, and views of possible impact of official use of social media on teaching and learning. From the basic characteristics of Saudi middle school teachers and students, it is apparently that smart phones are the best possible device to enhance the use of social media in education, where all teachers and almost 75% of students own it, and almost 85% of the students have Internet access at home vs. 95% of the teachers. In regards the social media applications, teachers and students use WhatsApp as a main tool, with 100% for the teachers, and almost 73% for the students. Both the teachers and the students are willing to use social media in education, and they believe it will enhance their educational experiences, but the practice is significantly low; in the meantime, there are agreements that the use of social media is for socialisation only. The infrastructure is available, but the comprehension educational view is absent, the researcher suggest that there is a need for training to evaluate own use of social media, and to enhance the abilities to use available properties.

For maintaining the security in various applications like E- commerce Online goods and services, Banking, Marketplace services Advertising, Auctions, Comparison shopping, Mobile commerce Payment, Ticketing, An electronic payment system (EPS),Online insurance policy management, we have to use high secured operating systems. In this regard a number of extremely secure operating systems i.e. Trusted Operating Systems like SELinux, Argus, Trusted Solaris, Virtual Vault have been developed by companies such as Argus-Systems Group, Hewlett-Packard, and Sun Microsystems to handle the increasing need of security. Normally, due to high security reason these operating systems are being used in defense. But still these secure operating systems have limited scope in commercial sector and are not popular in corporate due to lower performance; actually this security will come at a cost. In this paper we will propose SPF Model to maintain the balance between security and performance for these operating systems. This SPF model of TOS can be implement for various applications. For implementation of these SPF based trusted operating system we propose object oriented based Code generation i.e. forward engineering i.e. process of generating source code from one or more OO Rational Rose model for web application like social networking. In this research paper we will discuss the issues and UML-based software development solutions for SPF to manage the security, performance and modeling for Social networking sites.

Internet and social media use by patients in a comprehensive cancer center.

e19594 Background: Internet searches for health information are increasingly popular with American adults; 80% of Americans with Internet access search for health information. The use of social sites (Facebook or Twitter) doubled in those > age 50 in 2010. Understanding these quickly growing media could help improve information for cancer patients. The purpose of this study was to learn how cancer patients find and use information on cancer. Methods: We surveyed adult cancer patients (n = 1,282) at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2010 (response rate=75%). This pen and paper survey took 15 minutes to complete and assessed use of computers, Internet, social media, and usefulness of these information sources. Data analysis includes bivariate associations with Chi2 statistics. Results: Overall, 88% of respondents reported using the Internet with 93% of Internet users reporting broadband Internet access. Rates of Internet use were similar across diagnoses: breast cancer 91%, prostate cancer 86%, leukemia 88%. Young age and formal education were related to higher rates of Internet use. Overall, 47% of online patients reported using social media sites (44% Facebook, 5% MySpace, 4% Twitter). Most were relatively new users of social media (50% began in the past 2 years). Rates of social media use differed by cancer diagnoses: breast cancer 50%, leukemia 48%, prostate cancer 31%. Overall, 82% of patients reported that the Internet was useful or very useful in finding information about cancer. Only 30% of patients reported social media was a useful source of cancer information. Conclusions: Our study shows that a majority of patients have broadband access and use the Internet. A substantial proportion of patients also reported use of online social media. Rates of Internet are similar for patients across a range of cancer diagnoses, while social media use varied. However, the usefulness of cancer information from these sources is deemed limited by respondents. There may be great opportunity to increase the usefulness of online cancer information, especially via online social media channels. Future work could assess Internet and social media use by patients in a wider range of settings or in population-based samples of cancer patients.

Segmenting The Web 2.0 Market: Behavioural And Usage Patterns Of Social Web Consumers

The evolution of the commercial Internet to the current phase, commonly called Web 2.0 (or Social Web) has firmly positioned the web not only as a commercial but also as a social communication platform: an online environment facilitating peer-to-peer interaction, socialization, co-operation and information exchange. Internet users are not any more passive consumers of information but are actively involved in online creation, editing, and dissemination of content. They form virtual communities and interact with each other making use of a variety of interactive applications like social-networking sites, online forums, blogs, and wikis. This new social environment entails new challenges and opportunities for marketers, practitioners and behavioural researchers encompassing an appealing and untapped research area. In this empirical study we develop a classification of Web 2.0 users. Segments are identified on the basis of socio-demographic features, involvement, usage of the Internet, online purchase behaviour, personality characteristics, and the degree of use of Social Web sites. We analyze the differences between user segments, their trust levels and satisfaction and conclude that the degree of online experience is one of the most important antecedents of trust and satisfaction with Web 2.0 applications. The study identifies issues of further research and ways that can help field marketers to better map and understand their online markets in order to utilize effectively the Internet and particularly of the Web 2.0 domain as part of their marketing strategy.
