Measuring the Effects of an Anti-Food-Waste Digital Application from the Operators’ Perspective in Urban Contexts

This paper presents an empirical study focused on the use of TooGoodToGo smartphone applications by urban food retailers and HoReCa sector owners, evaluating their satisfaction levels with using this app and identifying the most relevant business levers that might convince other operators to adopt anti-waste programs and more sustainable behaviors. To this end, a survey questionnaire is administered to a sample of respondents. Data are statistically analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test to consider the different perspectives of the identified subsamples. The results reveal that business operators claim to have a high level of satisfaction with exploiting the service provided by the app and that it is a lever for increasing the number of customers served, even if there is not a high positive effect on revenue. However, retailers with more years of operations, who can be considered more experienced, can better exploit the opportunities of the TGTG business. This study contributes to a better understanding of the benefits of using web application services to decrease waste from urban food retailers. Consequently, levers for convincing new operators to adopt the service and their role in increasing customer awareness are identified and discussed.

Early detection of self-breast examination using smartphone breast application

INTRODUCTION: Breast self-examination (BSE) is a screening method that can help empower, raise awareness, and detect breast abnormalities in women. The use of smartphone applications for breast cancer early detection is able to overcome some of these barriers. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review to assess the effectiveness of the effect of using smartphone application-based technology on breast cancer. METHODS: Google Scholar, PubMed, Proquest, and ScienceDirect were searched for “breast self-examination” and “smartphone application” literature. This literature’s study designs were quasi-experimental, prospective cohort, qualitative, and systematic review. The study contained five unique research projects with 828 varied participants. RESULTS: The use of smartphones was seen to have advantages in terms of increased knowledge, perceived vulnerability, barriers to breast self-examination (BSE), self-efficacy, health motivation, and BSE practices. CONCLUSIONS: The utilization of smartphone apps related to BSE is shown through the availability, accessibility, and focus of information and is in line with the Health Belief Model (HBM).

Interpretable Machine Learning for Mode Choice Modeling on Tracking-Based Revealed Preference Data

Mode choice modeling is imperative for predicting and understanding travel behavior. For this purpose, machine learning (ML) models have increasingly been applied to stated preference and traditional self-recorded revealed preference data with promising results, particularly for extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and random forest (RF) models. Because of the rise in the use of tracking-based smartphone applications for recording travel behavior, we address the important and unprecedented task of testing these ML models for mode choice modeling on such data. Furthermore, as ML approaches are still criticized for leading to results that are hard to understand, we consider it essential to provide an in-depth interpretability analysis of the best-performing model. Our results show that the XGBoost and RF models far outperform a conventional multinomial logit model, both overall and for each mode. The interpretability analysis using the Shapley additive explanations approach reveals that the XGBoost model can be explained well at the overall and mode level. In addition, we demonstrate how to analyze individual predictions. Lastly, a sensitivity analysis gives insight into the relative importance of different data sources, sample size, and user involvement. We conclude that the XGBoost model performs best, while also being explainable. Insights generated by such models can be used, for instance, to predict mode choice decisions for arbitrary origin–destination pairs to see which impacts infrastructural changes would have on the mode share.

This study aimed to develop a smartphone mobile application-based supportive return to work (RTW) program for cancer survivors and evaluate its effects on their RTW, fatigue, stress, and quality of working life. This program was developed through a comprehensive process involving literature review, interviews with cancer survivors, and consultations with experts. A non-equivalent control group pre- and post-test design was used, with 41 participants assigned to the experimental (n = 18) and control (n = 23) groups based on recruitment timing. The experimental group received a 6-week smartphone mobile application-based supportive RTW program comprising "Counseling and Education" and "Self-Management." Participants completed assessments of decent RTW, fatigue, stress, and quality of working life at baseline and 6months later. The experimental group completed an additional post-program completion survey. During the 6-week program, no experimental group participants dropped out. The program's impact on decent RTW remains unclear. Fatigue (F = 2.52, p = 0.095) and quality of working life (F = 0.86, p = 0.434) did not show statistically significant differences. However, there was a significant reduction in stress (F = 4.59, p = 0.017). The smartphone application-based RTW program, focusing on self-management and counseling, effectively reduced participants' stress levels. To further evaluate the effectiveness of the program, a more diverse range of interventions and ongoing programs should be implemented. This study underscores the importance of tailored digital interventions to support the RTW of cancer survivors. The use of mobile smartphone applications allows temporal and spatial flexibility in program participation. Interventions involving various activities should be implemented to ensure ongoing participation.

Tomographic Planning of Dental Implants Using a Smartphone: Linear Measurements and Implant Selection-A Cross-Sectional Study.

This study assessed the accuracy of linear measurements and dental implant selection performed in a smartphone application compared to a computer software. Forty-four DICOM files from partially edentulous patients in the posterior region of the mandible were evaluated by three trained and calibrated examiners. Images were analyzed using three visualization methods: cross-sectional view (CScr) and coronal (CSco) plane using the CS 3D Imaging software, and coronal (DRco) plane using the DroidRender smartphone application. For the purpose of standardization, measurements of bone width and height were taken in the edentulous posterior region of the mandible, 10 mm posterior to the mental foramen. Dental implant selection was made according to Straumann® Standard implant catalog 2022/2023. Linear measurements were compared using the ANOVA test for repeated measurements and implant selection was compared using the Friedman test. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS software, considering a significance level of 5%. Linear measurements showed a statistically significant difference for bone width (p = 0.030), but not for height (p = 0.685). The choice of implant was not influenced by the visualization method (p = 0.614). It is possible to suggest the use of smartphone applications as an additional diagnostic tool for DICOM evaluation and dental implant planning in the posterior region of the mandible. Smartphone applications allow an assessment not limited to 2D images or to static environments. Therefore, information exchange and diagnostic opinion in emergency situations may be facilitated.

Kurdish EFL learners’ perceptions about the Use of Smartphone Applications for Language Learning

This study explored Kurdish EFL learners’ attitudes toward using smartphone applications for language learning. The data collection instrument was a five-point Likert-Scale questionnaire and the population was (101) students from departments of Medical Laboratory Science, General Science, and Chemistry Science – Charmo University. The results showed that the learners generally have a positive attitude towards using smartphone applications for English language learning. Also, the results suggest that learners generally agree that smartphone applications are useful and accessible tool for language learning. Regarding social media applications, the results indicated that learners who use social media platforms generally look for language-learning content. Nonetheless, the findings demonstrated that higher utilization of smartphone applications may not be necessarily associated with a perceived gain in proficiency. Consequently, language teachers must lead and assist students in learning how to utilize applications in general and those specifically created for language learning in particular. Therefore, EFL teachers’ roles change from manager to facilitator. It is the teacher’s responsibility to assist students in locating suitable material on the internet, which leads to mastery of the target language.

The Use of Smartphone and Tablet Applications for Early Reading and Writing Skills

The aim of this study is to reveal teachers' views on smartphone and tablet applications for teaching reading and writing skills. The study was designed and conducted in the context of the phenomenology method, one of the qualitative research methods. The study group consisted of 15 volunteer primary school teachers who worked in Köşk district of Aydın province in the 2022-2023 academic year. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed using the "Nvivo for Windows" software and content analysis method. In this study, teachers found the reading and writing instruction applications designed for tablets and smartphones to be supportive and facilitative. Additionally, it was found that the applications contributed to capturing students' attention, provided opportunities for students to review what they learned, increased students' motivation, and shortened the learning process. Moreover, teachers were observed to use such applications at every stage, emphasizing the importance of auditory stimulation.

Creation, Validation, and Use of Photo-Based Smartphone Application for Dietary Fiber Counting Among University Students

The main aim of this study was to develop a smartphone application specializing in assessing dietary fiber intake of university students. The validity of the application was tested among 45 volunteers, their daily intake was recorded for 3 days using the Daily Fiber application, and intakes were compared with a 3-day food record matched to the same days. The mean intake of dietary fiber using the 3-day food record and our application was 10.08 ± 4.48 and 10.21 ± 4.64 g/d, respectively (P < .01). Overall, Daily Fiber is a promising tool for assessing dietary fiber intake among undergraduates.

Pemanfaatan Aplikasi Smartphone untuk Mengembangkan Produk Industri Rumah Tangga

The use of smartphone applications for marketing home industry products has gained significant attention in recent years. Smartphone applications are effective tools for entrepreneurship development, particularly for young entrepreneurs, with significant potential for enhancing market reach and customer engagement. This community service took place in Rumah Rahpia, family-style orphanages that play a crucial role in the upbringing and development of teenagers in Medan, Indonesia. Extension and assistance activities in product marketing were carried out for 4 months starting from March to June 2022. Empowering young people in orphanages with entrepreneurial skills is believed to contribute to their personal development and future success. Moreover, fostering entrepreneurship at a young age can help them build realistic career paths and adapt to global trends. Therefore, educating young people in orphanages not only provides them with essential skills and knowledge but also contributes to their overall well-being and prospects. Interviews with the participants show that product sales increased with better product quality after carrying out this community service activity.

The background of this activity is that the community in Pinggiran Sungai Village generally does not have adequate knowledge and skills in providing emergency assistance in emergency situations. The purpose of this activity is to provide training to cadres and village officials on the use of Android smartphone applications for emergency aid. The method used was training and simulation of the use of Android smartphone applications containing information and guidelines for providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The result of this activity is the provision of the community with knowledge and skills to provide emergency assistance for cardiac and pulmonary arrest using smartphone applications. It is expected that the community of Pinggiran Sungai Village will have better preparedness in dealing with health emergency situations.

The covid-19 epidemic has severely harmed the pariwisata sector, resulting in the cancellation of several events and services due to the requirement to quarantine a sizable region to stop the virus from spreading. A new form of worker compromise is required in this new normal, and that is the use of technology. The purpose of this study is to determine the variables that have the most impact on students' use of digital smartphone applications to be ready for the new normal. To give a more thorough knowledge of the difficulties encountered when employing pariwisata digital apps during pandemics, this study makes use of TAM and TPB. While the TPB offers work-related information, the TAM describes aspects of application usability and perception.

Smartphone Applications in Dentistry: A Scoping Review.

This scoping review aims to investigate the latest literature concerning the use of smartphone applications (apps) in the prevention, management, and monitoring of oral diseases. Smartphone applications are software programs that are designed to run on smartphones. Nowadays, smartphones are regularly used by people of all ages, and mobile health apps (MHAs) represent an important means of spreading information related to oral health, which is the state of the mouth and teeth, including the gums and other tissues. Several apps have been designed to promote prevention, diagnosis, and therapeutic adherence monitoring. This scoping review considered randomized clinical trials, cross-sectional studies, before-after (pre-post) studies with no control group, and observational studies. Once the inclusion and exclusion criteria had been defined, a preliminary confined search was performed on PubMed and Scopus; key terms from the collected articles were selected to design a search strategy, and then a search of all the included articles' reference lists was run for further research. Studies were excluded if they did not fulfill the inclusion criteria. The preferred reporting items for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) consensus was followed. The risk of bias was evaluated by providing a qualitative analysis of the clinical studies via the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Quality Assessment of Controlled Intervention Studies, Observational Cohort Studies, and Cross-Sectional Studies (NHLBI, NIH). A total of 21 studies were included in this review. As it is clear from the studies selected, the literature indicates that MHAs are effective in improving oral hygiene in adolescents and children and reducing the dental plaque index, including in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. MHAs are also able to reduce the symptoms of patients affected by obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and improve the swallowing-related quality of life of elderly patients. MHAs are furthermore recommended to decrease dental anxiety among patients, both during dental procedures and the post-operative period. MHAs are useful to spread knowledge about traumatic dental injuries among non-oral health professionals and to monitor dental erosion and awake bruxism. MHAs' clinical outcomes might have been influenced by the demographic features of the subjects involved. Further studies considering a longer follow-up period and larger samples are needed. In conclusion, MHAs can be considered a useful tool to monitor oral disease and increase patients' quality of life related to oral health.

Keeping Track of My Drinking - Patient Perceptions of Using Smartphone Applications as a Treatment Complement for Alcohol Dependence

Background Alcohol dependence is common, yet highly undertreated. Smartphone applications (apps) have potential to enhance treatment accessibility and effectiveness, however evidence is limited, especially studies focussing on user experiences. The aim was to describe patient perceptions on the usability and acceptability of self-monitoring apps provided as treatment complement for alcohol dependence. Methods Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted through video or phone calls with 21 participants, recruited from a randomized controlled trial at a dependency clinic in Stockholm. The participants had used two specific apps for self-monitoring consumption (“Glasklart” and “iBAC”) during 12 wk prior to the interviews. Data was analyzed using Qualitative Content Analysis. Results Two domains were identified: 1) Smartphone applications as facilitators to treatment, and 2) Barriers to smartphone application use. Using apps within the treatment context was believed to increase the accuracy of the reported consumption. Participants became more aware of their alcohol problem and described the apps as reinforcers that could increase both the motivation to change and the focus on the problem and commitment to treatment. The apps were further described as helpful to control alcohol consumption. However, app usage was constrained by technical problems, unfit app-specific features and procedures, and alcohol-related shame and stigma. Discussion and Conclusions Self-monitoring alcohol apps have several beneficial features that can help assess, track, and control alcohol consumption, and improve communication with clinicians. The results indicate they can be useful complements to treatment for patients with alcohol dependence, but their use can be limited by different, foremost technical, issues.

A - 56 Examining the Impact of Cognition and Training on Successful Usage of an Assistive Smartphone Application for Older Adults Experiencing Cognitive Decline.

The SmartPrompt is an assistive smartphone application designed to prompt older adults to remember to do daily tasks and then log task completion in a photo log for later review. Here we examine whether and how cognitive status and performance during training with the SmartPrompt influenced usage of the app over a two-week testing period at Temple University. Nine community-dwelling older adults (M age = 77 ± 5.60, 67% male, 77% white) with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia underwent standardized training with the SmartPrompt app that included review and practice responding to SmartPrompt alarms and taking photos for the task log. Training was scored for time and performance accuracy. Following training, participants used the SmartPrompt to facilitate completion of two tasks of their choice every day for two weeks. The number of tasks completed (max =28), average time to respond to the SmartPrompt alarm, and a qualitative rating of the relevance of the photos in the log was scored. More time spent training was associated with more effective use of the SmartPrompt (task completion; rs = 0.715; p < 0.05; acknowledgement time rs = -0.571). Training performance accuracy was related to the quality of SmartPrompt photos (rs = -0.485) but not to other SmartPrompt measures. Cognitive status (MMSE) was associated with training performance (rs = -0.824; p < 0.01) and photo quality (rs = 0.737; p < 0.05) during testing weeks. Older adults show improved use of assistive smartphone applications when more time is spent on training and practice, regardless of their training performance accuracy or cognitive status.

Need for new strategies to improve the recall and avoidance rates of contact allergens: A retrospective cohort study from Turkey.

Previous studies reported a low-to-moderate benefit from patch testing regarding allergen recall and avoidance. To determine the allergen recall and avoidance rates of patients with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in Turkey. This was a retrospective cohort study based on a phone questionnaire of 465 patients diagnosed with ACD from major allergen groups, that is, metals, preservatives, rubber, fragrances (ubiquitous allergens) and hair dye/black henna, topical drug and resins (nonubiquitous allergens), at our tertiary referral centre between 1996 and 2018. Among 176 responders, allergen groups were remembered better (53.4%) than the individual allergens (36.9%). Age <40 years and keeping the allergy pass had a significantly positive impact on the recall rate of methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone and nickel, particularly non-occupational nickel allergy from metal jewellery in females, respectively. Exacerbations of ACD (56.3%) were mainly due to reexposures to ubiquitous allergens. 42.9% of patients with occupational ACD changed or quit their job, most of them being construction workers and hairdressers, showing a high share (83.3%) of benefit. The overall rates of allergen recall and avoidance were moderate. New strategies are needed to improve the recall and avoidance rates of contact allergens, such as increased use of allergy pass, smartphone applications and legal precautions.

Determinants of smartphones adoption and use at Kenya Airport Police Unit, Kenya

The Kenya Airport Police Unit has started using smartphones to deter crime, but there are still reservations about their potential impact on policing. The study sought to identify the factors that influence police officers' adoption and use of smart phone applications for crime prevention. The police officers assigned to the Kenya Airport Police Unit (1382) were the study's target group. For this study, a sample of 274 police officers was selected using a simple random sampling approach. The study was guided by the Mobile Technology Acceptance Model (M-TAM), which discovered that smartphones were useful instruments for crime prevention. Police officers discovered that programs such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, emails, and short text messages helped to prevent crime. The study suggests that tailored police smart phone applications be developed, as well as officer capacity training, to improve their utilization and help to crime prevention efforts.

Investigating psychological and motivational predictors of problematic smartphone use among Smartphone-based Social Networking Service (SNS) users

Given that the active use of certain smartphone applications is associate with problematic smartphone use, it has been proposed that certain smartphone applications are more addictive than others, such as Social Networking Services (SNS). Still, studies that consider smartphone users’ main usage application which are known to influence the users’ problematic smartphone use, such as SNS, remain to be explored. Thus, the current study aims to investigate the psychological and motivational predictors of problematic smartphone use in a sample of smartphone-based SNS users whose main device usage is SNS. A series of mean comparison tests and binary logistic regression were performed in this study. Of the 433 smartphone-based SNS users, 218 were male (50.3%) and 215 were female (49.7%). Age of 433 participants ranged from 20 to 40, and mean age was 30.75 (SD = 7.84). 73 participants (16.9%) were sorted into the high-risk problematic smartphone use group and 360 participants (83.1%) were categorized as the normal user group. The finding from binary regression analysis showed that reward responsiveness from the Behavioral Activation System (BAS), a lack of self-control, and anxiety significantly increased the odds of problematic smartphone use of the smartphone-based SNS users. Reward responsiveness was found to be the most powerful predictor. Our findings broaden the existing literature and provide implications to reduce addictive smartphone use relating to smartphone-based SNS usage.
