Simultaneous determination of twelve neonicotinoids and six metabolites in human urine with isotope-dilution UPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS

The extensive global use of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) has led to widespread human exposure, necessitating the development of effective methods for large-scale biomonitoring. However, current methods are inadequate in simultaneously and accurately detecting various NNIs or their metabolites (m-NNIs). In this study, we aimed to establish a robust method using solid-phase extraction (SPE)-ultra high performance liquid chromatography tandem Q-Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS) for the simultaneous determination of 12 NNIs and 6 m-NNIs in human urine. Samples were prepared using Oasis HLB 96 well plate with Isopropanol: methanol (7:3, v/v) as the elution solvent. The target compounds were separated using the Accucore RP-MS column and subsequently analyzed under parallel reaction monitoring mode. NTN32692 (m/z = 255.06433) was confirmed to be the specific metabolite of cycloxaprid for the further detection. Satisfactory recoveries (81.6–122.4 %) of the NNIs and m-NNIs were observed, with intra- (n = 3) and inter-day (n = 9) relative standard deviation (RSD) ranging from 0.8 % to 13.7 % and from 1.1 % to 18.6 %, respectively. Good linearity (R2 > 0.99) was achieved for all analytes. The limits of detection (LODs) for all target analytes ranged from 0.01 ng/mL to 0.65 ng/mL. This method was applied to urine samples collected from 10 children recruited from an agricultural area in China. Our study provides an effective method to identify and assess human exposure to NNIs and their metabolites.

Pesticide use negatively affects bumble bees across European landscapes

Sustainable agriculture requires balancing crop yields with the effects of pesticides on non-target organisms, such as bees and other crop pollinators. Field studies demonstrated that agricultural use of neonicotinoid insecticides can negatively affect wild bee species1,2, leading to restrictions on these compounds3. However, besides neonicotinoids, field-based evidence of the effects of landscape pesticide exposure on wild bees is lacking. Bees encounter many pesticides in agricultural landscapes4–9 and the effects of this landscape exposure on colony growth and development of any bee species remains unknown. Here we show that the many pesticides found in bumble bee-collected pollen are associated with reduced colony performance during crop bloom, especially in simplified landscapes with intensive agricultural practices. Our results from 316 Bombus terrestris colonies at 106 agricultural sites across eight European countries confirm that the regulatory system fails to sufficiently prevent pesticide-related impacts on non-target organisms, even for a eusocial pollinator species in which colony size may buffer against such impacts10,11. These findings support the need for postapproval monitoring of both pesticide exposure and effects to confirm that the regulatory process is sufficiently protective in limiting the collateral environmental damage of agricultural pesticide use.

Binary mixtures of imidacloprid and thiamethoxam do not appear to cause additive toxicity in fathead minnow larvae (Pimephales promelas).

Introduction: Considerable use of neonicotinoid insecticides has resulted in their detection in surface waters globally, with imidacloprid (IM) and thiamethoxam (TM) frequently found together. Neonicotinoids are selective agonists for invertebrate nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) leading to paralysis and death. While not overtly toxic to vertebrates, growing evidence suggests that chronic exposure to individual neonicotinoids can cause adverse health effects in fish. This work examined whether chronic exposure to binary mixtures of imidacloprid (IM) and thiamethoxam (TM) would be more toxic to fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) larvae than either insecticide alone. Materials and Methods: Embryos were exposed to a 1:1 mixture of IM and TM (0.2, 2, 20, 200 or 2,000μg/L of each pesticide) or a 1:5, 1:10, or 1:20 mixture of IM and TM (0.02μg/L of IM with 0.1, 0.2, or 0.4μg/L of TM) for a total of 8days. Survival, developmental toxicity, embryonic motor activity, and startle escape responses were quantified. Results: Survival and growth were reduced, and hatching induced by exposure to a 1:1 mixture containing > 2μg/L of each insecticide, but not following exposure to mixtures containing environmentally-relevant concentrations. Acute exposure to a 1:1 mixture did not alter embryonic motor activity; however, chronic exposure to these mixtures resulted in a slight but significant decrease in embryonic movements. Only 1:1 mixtures of high concentrations of IM and TM altered the startle escape response by increasing latency of response; however, a significant proportion of fish exposed to 1:1 mixtures had altered latency and burst speed. Taken together, these behavioral indicators of nAChR activation suggest that in mixtures, neonicotinoids could interfere with nAChR signaling despite their low affinity for the nAChR. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that toxicity of binary mixtures of IM and TM is primarily driven by IM, and that mixtures of IM with TM do not appear to cause significant additive toxicity when compared with our previous studies evaluating each neonicotinoid alone. Given the limited toxicological data available for mixtures of neonicotinoid insecticides in fish, further study is required to better understand the ecological risks these insecticides may pose to aquatic ecosystems.

Pesticide residues in honey bee (Apis mellifera) pollen collected in two ornamental plant nurseries in Connecticut: Implications for bee health and risk assessment

Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are one of the most important managed pollinators of agricultural crops. While potential effects of agricultural pesticides on honey bee health have been investigated in some settings, risks to honey bees associated with exposures occurring in the plant nursery setting have received little attention. We sought to identify and quantify pesticide levels present in honey bee-collected pollen harvested in two ornamental plant nurseries (i.e., Nursery A and Nursery B) in Connecticut. From June to September 2018, pollen was collected weekly from 8 colonies using bottom-mounted pollen traps. Fifty-five unique pesticides (including related metabolites) were detected: 24 insecticides, 20 fungicides, and 11 herbicides. Some of the pesticide contaminants detected in the pollen had not been applied by the nurseries, indicating that the honey bee colonies did not exclusively forage on pollen at their respective nursery. The average number of pesticides per sample was similar at both nurseries (i.e., 12.9 at Nursery A and 14.2 at Nursery B). To estimate the potential risk posed to honey bees from these samples, we utilized the USEPA's BeeREX tool to calculate risk quotients (RQs) for each pesticide within each sample. The median aggregate RQ for nurse bees was 0.003 at both nurseries, well below the acute risk level of concern (LOC) of ≥0.4. We also calculated RQs for larvae due to their increased sensitivity to certain pesticides. In total, 6 samples had larval RQs above the LOC (0.45–2.51), resulting from the organophosphate insecticide diazinon. Since 2015, the frequency and amount of diazinon detected in pollen increased at one of our study locations, potentially due to pressure to reduce the use of neonicotinoid insecticides. Overall, these data highlight the importance of considering all life stages when estimating potential risk to honey bee colonies from pesticide exposure.

Occurrence, distribution and potential risk to infants of neonicotinoids in breast milk: A case study in Hangzhou, China

The pervasive use of neonicotinoid insecticides (neonics) has led to increasing concerns regarding the potential health risks associated with them. Breast milk is the main food source of infants, and thus, the presence of chemicals in breast milk has a greater impact on infant health. However, there have only been few reports regarding the presence of neonics in breast milk. Herein, eight neonics were detected in breast milk samples using ultraperformance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry and their Pearson correlation was analyzed. The potential health risks of neonics to infants were assessed using the relative potency factor (RPF) method. The results revealed that neonics were widely detected in the breast milk samples from Hangzhou, with at least one neonics being detected in >94 % of the breast milk samples. The most frequently detected neonics included thiamethoxam (70.8 %) followed by imidacloprid (IMI) (62.0 %) and clothianidin (46.0 %). The residual concentrations of neonics in the breast milk samples ranged from <limit of detection of 501 ng/L, with a maximum IMIRPF value of 4760 ng/L. The analysis of neonics concentrations via Pearson's correlation coefficient revealed statistically significant positive correlations between the concentrations of thiamethoxam, clothianidin, and acetamiprid and between those of clothianidin, acetamiprid, and IMI in the breast milk samples, indicating that these neonics may have the same source. The cumulative intake exposure of infants of different ages ranged from 152.9 to 276.3 ng/kg/day, with the risks within acceptable limits. The findings of this study enable the assessment of the exposure level and health risks of neonics to infants during breastfeeding.

A Modeling Approach for Assessing Ecological Risks of Neonicotinoid Insecticides from Emission to Nontarget Organisms: A Case Study of Cotton Plant.

The use of neonicotinoid insecticides in agriculture has posed threats to ecological systems, and there is a need to assess the ecological risks of neonicotinoids from emission to nontarget organisms. We introduced a modeling approach to assess the ecological risks of neonicotinoids using honeybee and earthworm as model organisms, and the simulation was flexible under different environmental conditions. Using the cotton plant as an example, the simulation results demonstrated that under current recommended application rates, the use of common neonicotinoid insecticides posed no threat to earthworms, with the simulated risk quotients (RQs) much lower than 1. However, the simulation for some neonicotinoid insecticides (e.g., acetamiprid) indicated that using these insecticides on cotton plants could threaten honeybees, with simulated RQs higher than 1. The variability analysis showed that in high-latitude regions, the unacceptable risk to honeybees posed by insecticide application can be further elevated due to cold, wet weather that results in relatively high insecticide levels in pollen and nectar. The model evaluation showed large overlaps of simulated risk intervals between the proposed and existing (BeeREX) models. Because the proposed and existing models have different simulation mechanisms, we recommend that these two models be used together to complement each other in future studies. Biodegradation of neonicotinoid insecticide acetamiprid by earthworm gut bacteria Brucella intermedium PDB13 and its ecotoxicity

Extensive use of neonicotinoid insecticides in recent decade had contaminated water and soil systems and poses serious environmental and health risk. Microbial degradation of toxic contaminants in the environment has been established as a sustainable tool towards its remediation. Under this context, the present study focused on the biodegradation of neonicotinoid insecticide acetamiprid, by bacterial strain Brucella intermedia PDB13 isolated from the gut of the acetamiprid exposed earthworms. To enhance acetamiprid biodegradation, suitable parameters such as pH, temperature, inoculum size and acetamiprid concentration range were optimised using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The experimental results showed that the Brucella intermedium PDB13 can tolerate and degrade relatively high concentrations of acetamiprid (50 – 350 mg L−1). The results confirmed that maximum degradation of about 89.72% was achieved under optimized conditions. Further, confirmation of acetamiprid biodegradation was assessed through the occurrence of its degraded metabolites through HPLC, FTIR, and LCMS analysis. Based on this analysis, possible acetamiprid biodegradation pathway by Brucella intermedia PDB13 was proposed. Additionally, cytotoxicity, earthworm acute toxicity, and zebrafish embryo toxicity studies were also performed to assess the toxicity variations between the parent compound and its metabolites. The acetamiprid treated group resulted in cytotoxic effects apparently, with the increase in aberrant cells frequency (22.5 ± 3.3), when compared with its metabolites (2.3 ± 4.3) and control (1.9 ± 5.6) respectively. All these results evidently reported the degradation potential of Brucella intermedia PDB13, thereby establishing the scope for further advanced biodegradation studies towards mitigating the pesticide pollution.

A Time-course Transcriptional Kinetics of Genes in Behavior, Cortisol Synthesis and Neurodevelopment in Zebrafish Larvae Exposed to Imidacloprid and Thiamethoxam.

Agricultural use of neonicotinoid insecticides, neuroactive nitroguanidine compounds, has been detected everywhere in the global, posing significant hazard to nontarget organisms. This work studied the developmental neurotoxicity of zebrafish larvae exposed to imidacloprid (IMI) and thiamethoxam (THM), ranging from 0.05µg L- 1 to 50µg L- 1 for 35 days. Transcriptions of genes belonging to the behavior, neurodevelopment and cortisol synthesis in zebrafish larvae were monitored. The qPCR data demonstrated that with exposure time increased, the transcription of behavior related genes was down-regulated in both IMI and THM groups, such as macf1, cdh6 and syt10. Additionally, IMI and THM significantly up-regulated the transcriptions of actha, and down-regulated il1rapl1b and pi4k2a at 35 dpf. Importantly, IMI markedly enhanced the transcripiton of gfap, shha, nkx2.2a and nestin in a time dependent manner. This work provided the foundation for understanding zebrafish larvae's neurotoxicity induced by IMI and THM.

No evidence for impaired solitary bee fitness following pre-flowering sulfoxaflor application alone or in combination with a common fungicide in a semi-field experiment.

Pesticide exposure is considered a major driver of pollinator decline and the use of neonicotinoid insecticides has been restricted by regulatory authorities due to their risks for pollinators. Impacts of new alternative sulfoximine-based compounds on solitary bees and their potential interactive effects with other commonly applied pesticides in agriculture remain unclear. Here, we conducted a highly replicated full-factorial semi-field experiment with the solitary bee Osmia bicornis, an important pollinator of crops and wild plants in Europe, and Phacelia tanacetifolia as a model crop. We show that spray applications of the insecticide sulfoxaflor (product Closer) and the fungicide azoxystrobin (product Amistar), both alone and combined, had no significant negative impacts on adult female survival or the production, mortality, sex ratio and body size of offspring when sulfoxaflor was applied five days before crop flowering. Our results indicate that for O. bicornis (1) the risk of adverse impacts of sulfoxaflor (Closer) on fitness is small when applied at least five days before crop flowering and (2) that azoxystrobin (Amistar) has a low potential of exacerbating sulfoxaflor effects under field-realistic conditions.

Deriving freshwater guideline values for neonicotinoid insecticides: Implications for water quality guidelines and ecological risk assessment

The increased use of neonicotinoid insecticides in aquatic environments poses a significant threat to non-target freshwater species. However, the existing water quality guidelines (WQGs) for neonicotinoids mainly focus on imidacloprid, and only a few authoritative institutions have established WQGs for other neonicotinoids. There is a critical need to develop WQGs and conduct ecological risk assessment (ERA) of different neonicotinoids in global freshwater environments. In this study, we derived interim acute and chronic guideline values and acute-to-chronic ratios (ACRs) for six neonicotinoids based on publicly available acute and chronic toxicity data. The exposure concentrations of neonicotinoids were obtained from published literature worldwide, and ERA was conducted for neonicotinoids in global freshwater ecosystems using a tiered approach. The derived chronic guideline values (95% confidence interval (CI), ng/L) were 0.63 (0.02–5.47) for thiacloprid (the lowest) and 16.4 for dinotefuran (the highest). The identified ACRs (95% CI) ranged from 90.9 (47.0–180) to 957 (102–3350), which can be used to extrapolate scarce chronic data from the acute data. Neonicotinoid concentrations in global freshwater were predicted from 10.6 (6.88–23.4) (thiacloprid) to 339 (211–786) ng/L (thiamethoxam). The estimated risk quotients ranged from 3.23 (dinotefuran) to 21.73 (thiacloprid), and the probability of exceeding WQGs ranged from 27.1% (dinotefuran) to 77.1% (thiacloprid). The ERA results indicated that the six neonicotinoids posed negligible acute risks but high chronic risks to global freshwater ecosystems, especially acetamiprid (65.8%) and thiacloprid (28.1%). The key findings of this study provide critical scientific information regarding the ecological risks of long-term neonicotinoid exposure and key insights for policy development and water quality control.

Thiacloprid Detection by Silver Nanocubes-Based SERS Sensor.

The use of neonicotinoid insecticides leads to environmental problems such as accumulation and death of different insects and even bird species. In this work, we compared the SERS performance of Ag nanocubes- and nanospheres-based substrates for the analysis of thiacloprid, a neonicotinoid, reaching its detection at 1 mM using nanocubes as the active material.

Impact of Neonicotinoid Insecticides on the Foraging Activity of Indian Honey Bee, Apiscerana indica (Fab.) in the Cotton Ecosystem

Indian honey bees are the important managed pollinators of several agricultural and horticultural crops in India. At present, bee colony decline is the biggest crisis amongbeekeepers. The use of neonicotinoid insecticides is considered the prime factor, and they were found to cause a direct impact on bees by mortality and indirectly impair the foraging behavior of bees. Hence, the study aimed to assess the impact of neonicotinoids on the foraging activity of Indian honey bees. The neonicotinoids viz., imidacloprid 17.8 SL, clothianidin 50 WDG, thiamethoxam 25 WG, and thiacloprid 21.7 SC, along with organophosphate dimethoate 30 EC (chemical check) and control (no spray) were sprayed at field recommended doses on cotton crop. Foraging activity of the bees,viz.,incoming foragers with nectar and pollen load and outgoing foragers were counted at the hive entrance during the morning (09.00-11.00), afternoon (13.00-15.00), and evening (16.00-18.00) hours of the day. The data were recorded at pre-treatment count and posttreatment count on different day intervals viz., 1DAS, 3DAS, 7DAS, and 15DAS. The mean number of incoming nectar, pollen foragers, and outgoing foragers were recorded to be maximum in control than neonicotinoid-treated plots. Hence, the reduction in foraging activity may lead to areduction in the food storage area and brood area ultimately lesseningthe overall colony growth. It’s always better to avoid spraying cotton crop during the flowering period using neonicotinoids to dodge the residues even though cotton is not a food crop; meanwhile, it will safeguard the pollinators.

Impact of imidacloprid exposure on the biochemical responses, transcriptome, gut microbiota and growth performance of the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

The widespread use of neonicotinoid insecticides, such as imidacloprid, in agriculture is one of the key factors for the drop in the survival of invertebrates, including decapod crustaceans. However, there is currently a lack of comprehensive studies on the chronic toxicity mechanisms in decapod crustaceans. Here, the concentration-dependent effects of imidacloprid on the physiology and biochemistry, gut microbiota and transcriptome of L. vannamei , and the interaction between imidacloprid, gut microbiota and genes were studied. Imidacloprid caused oxidative stress, leading to reduced growth and to immunity and tissue damage in L. vannamei . Imidacloprid increased the gut pathogenic microbiota abundance and broke the steady state of the gut microbiota interaction network, resulting in microbiota function disorders. Chronic imidacloprid exposure induced overall transcriptome changes in L. vannamei . Specifically, imidacloprid caused a large number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) to be significantly downregulated. The inhibition of autophagy-related pathways revealed the toxic process of imidacloprid to L. vannamei . The changes in phase I and II detoxification gene expression clarified the formation of a detoxification mechanism in L. vannamei . The disturbance of circadian rhythm (CLOCK) caused by imidacloprid is one of the reasons for the increase in gut pathogenic microbiota abundance.

The Transcriptomic Landscape of Molecular Effects after Sublethal Exposure to Dinotefuran on Apis mellifera.

Simple SummaryApis mellifera is one of the most important pollinator communities in nature. Insecticide residues in pollen and nectar, due to their wide use, may harm bees. Thus, it is crucial to provide novel insights into the effects of neonicotinoid insecticides on pollinators for protecting bees and maintaining a long-term stable ecological environment. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect and the mechanisms underlying bees impaired by dinotefuran. In the present study, for the first time, we found the mRNA expression profile of bees changes after treatment with sublethal doses of dinotefuran. Overall, our findings enhance understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underly physiological and behavioural damage for bees after dinotefuran exposure.The decreasing number of bees is a global ecological problem. With the advancement of agricultural modernisation, the large-scale use of neonicotinoid insecticides is one of the main factors leading to the decline of bees. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect and the mechanisms underlying bees impaired by dinotefuran. Acute (48 h) oral toxicity tests showed that a 5% lethal concentration (LC5) was 0.220 mg/L, and a 20% lethal concentration (LC20) was 0.458 mg/L. The gene expression profile shows that when compared with the control group, the LC5 group induced 206 significantly upregulated, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 363 significantly downregulated DEGs, while the LC20 group induced 180 significantly upregulated DEGs and 419 significantly downregulated DEGs. Significantly, transcriptomic analysis revealed DEGs involved in immunity, detoxification, and the nervous system, such as antimicrobial peptides, vitellogenin, synaptotagmin-10, AChE-2, and nAChRa9. Furthermore, Gene Ontology (GO) annotation and Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis revealed that DEGs were enriched in amino acid and fatty acid biosynthesis and metabolism pathways. Collectively, our findings will help clarify the deleterious physiological and behavioural impacts of dinotefuran on bees and provide a basis for future research on the mechanisms underlying bees impaired by dinotefuran.

Analyzing growers’ pest management decisions in the U.S. ornamental horticulture industry

An increasing number of retailers in the U.S. have required labels indicating the use of controversial neonicotinoid insecticides in plant production. Recent research shows that banning neonicotinoids decreased yield, increased production cost and pest resistance. Using a nationwide survey, we analyze production practices in the ornamental horticulture industry with an emphasis on the use of neonicotinoid insecticides. We are interested in investigating how U.S. ornamental plant growers who use neonicotinoids in their production practices may be different from those who do not use them, and the factors that would affect growers’ adoption of non-neonicotinoid insecticides. A reduced-form decision model is empirically estimated using a sample of 166 growers. Results reveal discrepancies in firm and production characteristics between neonicotinoids users and non-users. Type of operation and anticipated cost changes are found to be strong indicators of pest control adoption decisions. Specifically, growers with open field are more likely to adopt non-neonicotinoids practices. Growers anticipating larger increases in labor factor input or labor cost are less likely to switch to non-neonicotinoids practices, indicating growers become reserved when environmentally friendly pest management practices have the potential to increase labor input factor and associated cost, and as a result, lead to lower revenues and profitability.

The Other Side of the Story: Greenhouse and Nursery Producers’ Perceptions about Neonicotinoid Insecticides and Pollinator Friendly Labeling

The purpose of this report is to summarize ornamental plant producers’ perceptions about neonicotinoid labeling and anticipated changes in production practices due to neonicotinoids labeling policy intervention. The target audience is industry, state agency, and public stakeholders involved in decisions and policy making related to the use of neonicotinoid insecticides in the U.S. ornamental plants industry.

Glutathione and its dependent enzymes' modulatory responses to neonicotinoid insecticide sulfoxaflor induced oxidative damage in zebrafish in vivo.

The use of neonicotinoid insecticides has progressively increased worldwide when compared with other insecticide groups. Due to this increase, non-target animal species such as fish are exposed to neonicotinoids from different sources, so they can be accumulated at trophic levels and cause various toxic effects by reaching humans. There are limited studies related to the toxic effects of neonicotinoid sulfoximine insecticides including sulfoxaflor on non-target species. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of sulfoxaflor on GSH-related antioxidants and to determine oxidative stress-producing effect of sulfoxaflor in the gill of zebrafish (Danio rerio). For this purpose, three sublethal concentrations of sulfoxaflor 0.87 mg/L (2.5% of 96 h LC50), 1.75 mg/L (5% of 96 h LC50), 3.51 mg/L (10% of 96 h LC50) of sulfoxaflor were exposed to zebrafish for 24, 48, and 96 h. GSH related antioxidants were evaluated by analyzing tGSH levels and GPx, GR, GST specific enzyme activities in the gill of zebrafish. The oxidative damage of sulfoxaflor on gill cells was determined by measuring TBARS levels. The results of this study demonstrated that sulfoxaflor activated GSH related antioxidants by increasing tGSH levels, GPx, GR enzyme activities and by diminishing GST enzyme activity in the gill of zebrafish. Sulfoxaflor also caused oxidative damage in the gill of zebrafish by increasing lipid peroxidation. In conclusion, this study indicated that sulfoxaflor led to oxidative stress and activation of GSH related antioxidants in the gill of zebrafish.

Researches Concerning the Effectiveness of the Maize Foliar Treatment Compared With Seeds Treatment for Chemical Control of the Maize Leaf Weevil (Tanymecus Dilaticollis Gyll) in the South-East of Romania

Maize leaf weevil [(Tanymecus dilaticollis (Gyllenhal, 1834)] represents one of the most dangerous pests of the maize crops in Romania. Each year, around one million hectares cultivated with maize are attacked by this pest with different levels of attack intensities. In the case of the high weevils invasion, the maize seedlings could not survive, and the farmers have to sow their fields again, causing unexpected costs. Spring drought and higher temperatures that usually occur in Romania's south-east is even more favorable circumstances for the weevils attack. Also, maize monoculture has an increasing effect on pest density associate with a higher impact on the attack. The maize seeds' chemical treatment with systemic insecticides was the most effective method to reduce the loss. However, the use of neonicotinoid insecticides for seed treatment was banned in the European Union in 2019. As a result, no effective insecticides are available for maize seed treatment against T. dilaticollis in Romania. This study aimed to evaluate possible alternatives at seed treatment to control the maize leaf weevil. The experiences were carried out at the National Agricultural Research and Development Institute Fundulea, both under the field and greenhouse conditions, with artificial infestation, between 2015 and 2018. Maize foliar treatment with deltamethrin (100 g/l), thiacloprid (480 g/l), and maize seeds treatment with imidacloprid (600 g/l) active ingredients were assessed. In all years from this trial, in the field conditions studied foliar treatments haven't assign effective protection of the maize plants in early vegetation stages against maize weevil attack. In case of high pest attack in the absence of the seeds treatment, more than 90 % of the plants can be destroyed by the weevils. Until now, no alternatives are available to replace maize seed treatments with systemic insecticides.

Beyond the Headlines: The Influence of Insurance Pest Management on an Unseen, Silent Entomological Majority

For most of the last two decades, insect pest management in key grain and oilseed crops has relied heavily on an insurance-based approach. This approach mandates a suite of management tactics prior to planting and in the absence of pest data. Because there is little flexibility for using these tactics individually, most producers have adopted this full suite of practices despite mounting evidence that some components do not provide consistent benefits. In North America in particular, this preventive approach to insect pest management has led to steep increases in use of neonicotinoid insecticides and subsequent increases in neonicotinoids in soil and water within crop fields and beyond. These increases have been accompanied by a host of non-target effects that have been most clearly studied in pollinators and insect natural enemies. Less attention has been given to the effects of this practice upon the many thousands of aquatic insect species that are often cryptic and offer negligible, or undefined, clear benefits to humans and their commerce. A survey of the literature reveals that the non-target effects of neonicotinoids upon these aquatic species are often as serious as for terrestrial species, and more difficult to address. By focusing upon charismatic insect species that provide clearly defined services, we are likely dramatically under-estimating the effects of neonicotinoids upon the wider environment. Given the mounting evidence base demonstrating that the pest management and crop yield benefits of this approach are negligible, we advocate for a return to largely-abandoned IPM principles as a readily accessible alternative path.

Detrimental effects of clothianidin on foraging and dance communication in honey bees.

Ongoing losses of pollinators are of significant international concern because of the essential role they have in our ecosystem, agriculture, and economy. Both chemical and non-chemical stressors have been implicated as possible contributors to their decline, but the increasing use of neonicotinoid insecticides has recently emerged as particularly concerning. In this study, honey bees were exposed orally to sublethal doses of the neonicotinoid clothianidin in the field in order to assess its effects on the foraging behavior, homing success, and dance communication. The foraging span and foraging activity at the contaminated feeder decreased significantly due to chronic exposure at field-realistic concentrations. Electrostatic field of dancing bees was measured and it was revealed that the number of waggle runs, the fanning time and the number of stop signals were significantly lower in the exposed colony. No difference was found in the homing success and the flight duration between control and treated bees released at a novel location within the explored area. However, a negative effect of the ambient temperature, and an influence of the location of the trained feeder was found. Finally, the residues of clothianidin accumulated in the abdomens of exposed foraging bees over time. These results show the adverse effects of a chronic exposure to sublethal doses of clothianidin on foraging and dance communication in honey bees.
