Trans-ocean wireless transfer of electricity from continent to continent

The author offers collections from his previous research of the revolutionary new ideas: wireless transfer of electric energy to a long distance – from one continent to another continent through the Earth's ionosphere and the storage of the electric energy in the ionosphere. Earlier he also suggested the use of electronic tubes as the method for transportation of electricity into outer space and the 100-km electrostatic space towers for connection to the Earth's ionosphere. Earlier a connection to the Earth's ionosphere using 100-km solid or inflatable towers was suggested. however, the technology faces difficulties. In this work, connection to the Earth's ionosphere by thin plastic tubes supported in the atmosphere by electron gas and electrostatic force is researched. Building this system is cheap and easy using the current technology. The computation allows estimating the possibility of the suggested method.

Use of Electron Tubes with Movable Electrodes for Measuring and Monitoring Nonelectrical Quantities

The possibilities are considered of measuring and monitoring nonelectrical quantities such as mechanical displacements and deformations, strains, vibrations, pressures, and other parameters of industrial processes, using primary transducers based on electron tubes with movable electrodes.

We propose the use of electron tubes in the modeling of nonlinear boundary conditions in the solution of problems of steady heat conduction by an electric-model method, thus making it possible to solve the most complex of problems on the simplest of analog computers.

Industrial Electronic Developments in the Last Two Decades and a Glimpse into the Future

During the past two decades significant improvements have been made in all types of electron tubes. Small tubes became still smaller, and the output of large tubes has been increased. Greater reliability has been achieved, and frequency limits have been extended upward. Hydrogen thyratrons have been developed, providing high power for pulse work. Ignitron ratings have been increased significantly. The problem of shutting off gas tubes by grid control has received attention and has led to two new types of tubes which at this time have, however, only limited output. To the list of photosensitive devices have been added the leadsulfide and similar cells, providing means of detecting infrared radiation of long wave length. A host of ingenious transducers has extended the use of electron tubes in the measurement and control field; smaller magnitudes of physical quantities, such as distance, pressure and magnetic field intensity can be observed and recorded. On the other end of the scale, tubes have provided HF power for induction and dielectric heating. But by far the most outstanding development of the last 15 years has been in the field of solid state or semiconductor devices. Here the transistor, announced in 1948, occupies first place, and improvements in its characteristics are coming at a breath-taking pace. In 1957 the silicon-controlled rectifier, aptly called a solid-state thyratron, joined the march. These two devices are giving industrial electronics a tremendous new drive.

Magnetic-pulse-generator practical design limitations

Saturable reactors can be used to produce narrow pulses from a periodic supply without the use of electron tubes. An increasingly popular circuit for producing pulses is known as the Melville Line. The original paper1 describing the circuit is an excellent treatise on the theory of the circuit and includes some practical considerations. Another paper2 presents a method of determining the number of stages in the circuit for minimum total core volume. There are limitations to the circuit which are determined by core characteristics. Also, by use of the relations developed, a designer can determine whether or not C cores can be substituted for toroidal cores to simplify winding and insulating.

General problems in the use of electron tubes

This paper concerns the general problems connected with the use of electron tubes. We are primarily concerned with obtaining the utmost reliability when vacuum tubes are employed in circuits to perform certain functions in guided missiles. It is first desirable that we define what we mean by "reliability." Unfortunately, each person has his own definition and idea of just what reliability concerns itself with. The following definition has been developed by a committee on reliability set up by the Radio Television Manufacturers Association and probably fits the bill closer than any definition developed up the present time. The definition is: Reliability is a measure of the probability that a device will perform its purpose adequately for the period of time intended under the operating conditions encountered. This definition covers, in reality, almost every conceivable kind of application and it becomes apparent almost immediately that reliability for one type of service may not necessarily constitute reliability for another application at all. This causes much of the confusion which exists in determining reliable operating. conditions for tubes in specific particular applications. This is brought about by the fact that some applications require the tubes to operate for only a relatively short time, say one-half hour; other applications require the equipment to run for twenty-four hours a day for days on end without any operator being within hundreds of miles of the equipment. In this instance, replacements cannot easily be made and therefore the equipment, to be reliable, must operate thousands of hours without any attention.

A decade of progress in the use of electronic tubes: Part II — In other than the field of communication

IN comparison with the communication field, the use of electronic devices in other industry has played an entirely different role. In communication in general and in radio in particular, tubes and tube developments have been basic to most improvements. They have been truly called the “heart” of nearly all radio apparatus. In other industry, however, they have in general had to supplant other methods and to compete in highly developed fields of electrical engineering.

A decade of progress in the use of electronic tubes: Part I — In the field of communication

THE dependency of the art of communication on the science of electronics is so great as to make a review of progress in electronics almost of necessity a review of the field of communications itself. While it is true that the early forms of telephone and radio communication advanced to a degree without the use of electronic devices as we know them today, the recognition of the vacuum tube as an amplifier and generator of high-frequency alternating currents in the years just preceding the first World War marked a turning point in the development of the communication art. From that day to this the progress of electronics and communications has gone hand in hand. The need of the communications engineer for new electronic tools has kept him continually urging the electronics engineer to improve old devices and to originate new ones, and each time the efforts of the latter have been rewarded with success, the fruits of his work have been immediately applied to produce new and more startling miracles of long-distance communication.

ALTERNATING CURRENT MOTORS CONTROLLED BY MUTATORS

This is the second of a series of three papers dealing with the use of electron tubes for power purposes coming from the pen of Admiral Robinson. His many friends who watch for his contributions will be glad to hear that he is now quite completely recovered from injuries received in an automobile accident about two months ago. His first paper dealt with “Direct Current Power Transmission.” This paper covers power utilisation, and the third paper will show how to make some of the calculations covering a number of the circuits used. The author suggests that perhaps the title used for these three papers should have been “New Electricity,” because the ability of the electron tube to start and stop currents in practically any desired time has opened up an entirely new method of utilizing electricity; the method is so novel, and brings in so many new concepts, that it is almost as if a new form of energy had been discovered.
