UTILIZATION OF BIM (BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING) TECHNOLOGY TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY AND ACCURACY OF INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT PLANNING

This research aims to investigate the use of BIM (Building Information Modeling) Technology as an innovative solution in increasing the efficiency and accuracy of infrastructure project planning. The research method consists of identifying stakeholder needs, developing an integrated 3D BIM model, validating and testing the model, integration into the Project Information Management System (PMIS), as well as training and application in the field. By adopting this approach, it is hoped that it will be able to improve the quality of planning information, provide a holistic view of the project, and optimize collaboration between stakeholders. This research focuses not only on the technical aspects of BIM models, but also on their practical implementation in real construction environments. The results of this research are expected to make a significant contribution to increasing the effectiveness of infrastructure project management through the use of BIM technology.

Intelligent Modeling of Edge Components of Prefabricated Shear Wall Structures Based on BIM

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital tool that can be used to create three-dimensional models of components. BIM technology, with its parameterized modeling scheme, can effectively address design changes. The use of BIM technology in prefabricated shear wall structures can significantly enhance component design accuracy and production efficiency. The Tekla software offers significant advantages in BIM deepening design. By utilizing the C# language, secondary development of the Tekla software, and the development of an intelligent modeling program for the edge components of prefabricated shear wall structures, the deepening design efficiency of such structures can be improved. The creation of BIM models is a crucial step in program development. Different types of reinforcements require various modeling methods, which, when combined with the design specifications of concrete structures, can be compiled to create the fine reinforcement model. This allows for the automatic creation of three-dimensional reinforcement models: “linear-shaped,” “T-shaped,” and “L-shaped” joints of the edge member. The BIM visualization characteristics can then display the three-dimensional model of the steel bar of the edge member in the cast-in-place area, deriving the engineering quantity of the steel bar for the production and construction of the prefabricated members. The modeling program’s development concept can serve as a reference for similar engineering applications, promoting the intelligent development of prefabricated building design and enhancing the efficiency of design and construction.

Sustainable Design Protocol in BIM Environments: Case Study of 3D Virtual Models of a Building in Seville (Spain) Based on BREEAM Method

One of the key problems facing the construction industry concerns the requirement to integrate sustainability criteria that effectively reduce the environmental impact throughout the lifecycles of buildings. For this, it is necessary to use digital tools with the capacity to evaluate the environmental performance of the different solutions proposed through the design process. In this context, the objective of this study was to establish a protocol of sustainable standards defined by the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), employing building information modeling (BIM) technology to simplify the integration of these indicators in the initial phases of the design process. This study focuses on a case study associated with the use of BIM technology and the BREEAM method. The results of the analysis enable us to define which of the BREEAM indicators can be integrated into and evaluated in BIM environments in the initial phase of the design process and to identify the environmental improvements and economic costs associated with these indicators. This study concludes that the indicators associated with the geometric and spatial definition of the building are the most influential in improving sustainability in the initial design phase, without requiring significant economic investment. In turn, these are easy parameters to evaluate using BIM, reducing design times compared to the use of traditional tools; this facilitates their involvement in the design phase and enables them to have a real impact on improving the environmental conditions of the final construction.

Applications of Building Information Modelling in the Operation and Maintenance Phase of Construction Projects: A Framework for the Malaysian Construction Industry

Building information modelling (BIM) is an inventive solution for enhancing the operation and maintenance (O&M) phase of construction projects. However, there is still a small and low level of BIM adoption in the O&M phase of construction projects in Malaysia. Hence, a framework is required for the Malaysian construction industry regarding the adoption of BIM in the O&M phase. The goal of this study is to examine the factors that influence the implementation of BIM technology during the O&M phase. A literature review was performed with more than 50 research papers from the past 10 years. This research was closely evaluated to create a list of barriers and drivers that might affect the application of BIM in the O&M phase. To ensure that these barriers and drivers match Malaysian conditions, a semi-structured interview was performed. Based on this interview, a refined questionnaire was created to gather feedback. Next, an online survey was conducted on 302 Malaysian construction professionals who work in the industry. The collected data were analysed for tests of reliability, validity, correlation, and a relative importance index. As per the findings, most of the respondents were familiar with the use of BIM technology, with 98.7% of the companies they worked at having more than 15 BIM engineers employed at the time of the survey. The lack of learning materials and equipment prepared by the academic institutions were identified as two main aspects requiring attention to improve the utilisation of BIM in the O&M stage. On the other hand, the utilisation of BIM, which increases the efficiency of data accessibility for the O&M personnel, has been rated as the most significant driver. Based on the findings, a conceptual framework was developed to provide insight into the matter and a future direction to overcome the matter. Therefore, this study managed to provide an in-depth perspective for future researchers into the factors that can enhance the implementation of BIM software during the O&M phase of a construction project.

Research Progress, Hotspots, and Trends of Using BIM to Reduce Building Energy Consumption: Visual Analysis Based on WOS Database.

With the development of engineering technology, building information modeling (BIM) has attracted more and more attention and has been studied by many experts on building energy consumption in recent years. It is necessary to analyze and forecast the application trend and prospect of BIM technology in building energy consumption. Based on 377 articles published in the WOS database, this study adopts the technique of combining scientometrics and bibliometrics to obtain relevant research hotspots and quantitative analysis results. The findings demonstrate that the building energy consumption field has made extensive use of BIM technology. However, there are still some limitations that can be improved, and the use of BIM technology in construction renovation projects should be emphasized. This study can help readers better understand the application status of BIM technology and its trajectory of development with regard to building energy consumption, providing a valuable reference for future research.

Problems and benefits of implementing BIM in the construction industry

The construction industry is one of the important pillars of the economy. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a set of technologies that aims to enhance collaboration across the architecture, engineering, and construction industries to improve the productivity and quality of the design, construction, and maintenance phases of a building. Rethinking construction is the key to increasing productivity. However, BIM has not been widely adopted in the construction industry. It is necessary to understand the main problems hindering the implementation of BIM, consider the appropriate strategies that can be applied to gain a deeper understanding of BIM, conduct a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the factors influencing the implementation of BIM. Based on a literature review, a questionnaire survey and the collection of statistical data, factors of a negative impact on the implementation of BIM were identified. The results show that key factors influencing BIM adoption include a lack of trained professionals, of investment in staff training, of BIM standardization, as well as the position of leadership in organizations. This article puts forward some proposals to promote the implementation of BIM and specific measures to implement the widespread use of BIM technology in the construction industry.

Root factors limiting BIM implementation in developing countries: sampling the Turkish AEC industry

PurposeDespite several advantages of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology, BIM has not been adopted and implemented extensively in developing countries. Consequently BIM remains at a beginner level in developing countries. To increase the level of BIM implementation, first, knowing the root factors that resist BIM implementation is necessary to know. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the factors that limit BIM implementation in developing countries, specifically in the Turkish Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire was designed with 46 influencing causes (ICs) identified through a systematic literature review. In total, 141 survey results were returned from architects and engineers, and reliability analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted. Furthermore, a structural equation model (SEM) was developed to identify the root factors of BIM implementation.FindingsEight root factors affecting the prevalent use of BIM technology in the Turkish construction industry were determined and grouped into three categories based on BIM implementation level. Problems with the BIM transition process and a lack of management support are the most influential root factors limiting BIM implementation. Lack of incentives, lack of BIM education, bias regarding BIM technology and BIM-based software problems form the second group of root factors that have a significant effect. Awareness and lack of communication amongst stakeholders were identified as root factors that had a moderate effect.Research limitations/implicationsThis study contributes to the knowledge body by revealing eight root factors limiting BIM implementation in the Turkish AEC industry which can be generalised to most developing countries. Therefore, the outcomes of this study may be used as a practical reference for future research aimed at improving BIM adoption in developing countries through governmental, educational, and managerial solutions.Originality/valueSeveral studies have identified the challenges and barriers of BIM implementation in the construction industry using qualitative and quantitative analyses and projected the current state. Unlike previous studies, this study comprehensively and quantitatively determined the root factors that constrain the use of BIM in Turkey using exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modelling to present a structural model.

Use of BIM technology for optimization and virtual build of TBM tunnels

AbstractThe practical application of accurate design and coordination in Building Information Modeling (BIM) environment for precast rings in Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)‐bored tunnels is becoming more achievable. These rings, made up of individual segments, are subject to many constraints which include: 1) deviations from theoretical alignment, as modeling the straight centerline of a ring into a curved alignment naturally produces minor deviations in line and grade, 2) avoiding crucifix joints when the joints between segments align in the longitudinal direction, reducing sealing performance, 3) and TBM shield design by minimizing the diameter of the TBM to reduce overcut and required backfill. This article describes the automated procedures for developing our design intent in the BIM environment with consideration for ring length optimization in tunnel curves, geometrical analyses of the staggered pattern of joints, and the minimum diameter and overcut envelope of the TBM shield. This procedure is demonstrated in multiple light‐rail transit lines in Montréal including the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) airport link tunnel and the expansion of the Montreal Blue Line Metro. Virtual build of these segmentally lined tunnels negotiating all straight and curved drives of the alignment with BIM modeling is realized and summarized in this article.

Use of BIM Technology in Construction Design Phase

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a digital information technology used to transmit information involving architecture, engineering, and construction as a set of interactions in the construction industry. When BIM technology is used as a management system in communication, the delivery of information is more accurate, clear, and detailed. However, problems occur when the construction industry lacks cost in the acquisition of such technology, in addition lack of knowledge and skills to use BIM technology process in project management. Therefore, this study identifies the factors use of BIM technology, the level of absorption, and the measures to increase the users of BIM technology in construction design phase. The method used in the data collection process is the questionnaire method. The population involved in this study includes architects and engineers, with a total of 80 distinguished populations. However, only 55 sets of questionnaire forms were recovered. The respondents involved in this study were architects and engineers. The result of the data analysis obtained shows that knowledge and skills need to be improved in the process of operating BIM technology. However, small-scale organisations cannot afford to own this technology because of the high cost and the need to undergo training in managing the technology. In an effort to coordinate the policy on the use of BIM technology, CIDB provides a centre as a reference for all parties involved in the industry to know the true concept of BIM technology and to undergo courses offered related to the use of BIM technology. These findings benefit those involved in achieving a more systematic use of BIM technology in organisational management involving the construction design phase.

Application of Building Information Modeling toward Social Sustainability

Building Information Modeling (BIM) emerges as one of the megatrends that will modernize the Malaysian construction industry due to its vital role in collaboration, coordination and communication in real-time among construction industry stakeholders. In 2019, the government of Malaysia has mandated the use of BIM technology for public projects worths more than 100 million. However, less than half of the construction projects in Malaysia is currently using the BIM system. In order to encourage the implementation of BIM, there is an important need to educate the construction industry players with realistic information on BIM technology. Based on previous literature, disruption of BIM toward the traditional practice of construction activities can be managed through exposure and incremental of BIM knowledge. Therefore, this study explores the current awareness of construction industry players on the application of BIM toward sustainability aspects, particularly on social sustainability. A set of questionnaire survey is used to gather the required data and a total of 133 contractors have responded to the survey. The data were analyzed using the frequency distribution to indicate the highlighted application of BIM foresees by contractors that contribute to social sustainability. The finding indicates that the level of awareness is influenced by their knowledge on BIM. Therefore, providing a better understanding and wider exposure on BIM could improve the implementation of BIM in the construction projects, which align with the government agenda.

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING TECHNOLOGY ON BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

The development of the digital technology is sophisticated so that in construction field undergoes technology needs change resulting good quality to improve time and cost efficiency in organizing construction. Planning and actuating the construction uses AutoCad, Ms.Project, previously, but these applications have not been integrated to the other application. It makes time consuming in using them. Nowadays, technology in construction scope has resulted in a system called Building Information Modeling or BIM. It is a system or technology involving some important information in construction project and is used in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC). Construction employer in Indonesia has not much used BIM system, in fact that BIM make the construction process is easy and fast especially in building construction compared to the conventional construction. It, therefore, needs further research to investigate the superiority of BIM in building skyscraper. The type of the study was qualitative by comparing the skyscraper building using conventional system and BIM system. This present case study expects to insist the construction employer that the use of BIM technology promises time and cost efficiency although it requires high investment compared to the conventional method. The result of the study inferred that using Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology results in time and cost efficiency and effectiveness in constructing building compared to the conventional method, which needs long time to complete the work and high cost.

The Use of BIM Technology in Analyzing Building Energy and EconomicFeasibility of Solar Panel

Buildings contribute more than 40% of world energy consumption, so it is feared that it will cause energy problems in thefuture, especially in the construction sector. One solution to reducing this problem is by analyzing energy use at the initialdesign stage and utilizing solar energy as one of the solar power plants (PLTS) in office buildings. To analyze the use ofenergy in buildings, Building Information Modeling (BIM) was used. The purpose of this research is to analyze the annualenergy level of office buildings in Palembang using BIM software, namely Autodesk Revit. The number of solar panels aswell as the amount of energy were also identified using web-based software (HelioScope) resulting the economic feasibilityas indicated by the installation of solar panels as a component of PV mini-grid. The results showed that the use of BIMtechnology in analyzing building energy can provide a detailed description of the building model at the design stage. Revitanalysis indicates that the building consumed electrical energy per year for about 3,647,713 kWh with a roof area of 1,657m2. In addition, based on the HelioScope analysis, the use of renewable energy from the installation of PLTS was 152,900kWh/year. Meanwhile, for economic feasibility analysis, the installation of PLTS in office buildings can provide a positive NetPresent Value (NPV), indicating a feasible project.

Adoption of BIM technology to develop sustainable buildings in the Iraqi construction sector

Objectives: This study aims to identify and assess sustainable design parameters based on the tools and strategies provided by Building Information Modeling (BIM)technology to improve building sustainability. Method: This study idea was applied to one of the Iraqi construction projects in Diyala province, to achieve the aim of this study, we collected real data (CAD drawings, schedule of quantities) by an interview with professional engineers in the construction fields and after this, the project is simulated by using Autodesk Revit 2018 software. Findings: We made analysis and found the results of analysis by using Autodesk Insight360 Cloud added to Revit2018 that illustrate design parameters and its effect on energy use intensity. The use of BIM technology helps designers and architects to identify and assess sustainable design parameters in the early design stage that lead to improving the sustainability of the building. Applications: BIM technology is one of the modern and important technologies in the construction sector. Adopting BIM technology is very useful to develop sustainable buildings in the construction sector. To BIM or not to BIM? Lessons learned from a Greek vernacular museum building

The environmental impact of buildings has stimulated efforts to promote sustainable development in the construction sector. Technological development aims to provide an effective framework for the design, construction, and management of buildings through the use of tools such as Building Information Modeling (BIM). This paper critically assesses the use of BIM technology in vernacular design and analysis through the case study of a Greek vernacular museum building. Based on software application as well as in-situ observation and interviews, accurate energy analysis and safety were proved to be important advantages achieved through BIM technology. On the contrary, the inability to capture tacit knowledge and the lack of adaptability to local specificities appear to be the main weaknesses of BIM technology. Certain measures to enhance the use of BIM technology for the design and analysis of vernacular buildings are proposed.

Understanding the Relation between BIM Application Behavior and Sustainable Construction: A Case Study in China

Building information modeling (BIM) is based on 3D models for collaborative management of information, which leads the innovative development of information transformation in the construction industry. In recent years, sustainable construction has become a hot topic in construction research. With the concept of sustainable development, this type of construction advocates for the sustainable optimization of construction models and processes. A person’s good behavior can bring enormous potential, which is critical for the promotion of new technology in new areas. Nowadays, the integration of BIM technology and sustainable construction has increasingly attracted attention in the industry of construction. But many issues and gaps still exist when using them. The aim of this study is to investigate the intrinsic relationship between BIM application and sustainable construction from the perspective of user application behavior, and to reveal the key influential factors of BIM application behavior in order to improve the application efficiency of BIM in sustainable construction. Specifically, the present study builds a theoretical model by integrating the theory of planned behavior and BIM application. Based on a questionnaire survey of 353 BIM users, we conducted an empirical analysis using the structural equation model method. The results showed that the perceived usefulness and ease of use of BIM technology are the key influential factors in behavior attitude. BIM behavior intention, actual behavior, and behavior attitude have a positive effect on sustainable construction. Ultimately, practical support is provided for the effective integration of BIM with sustainable construction in China.

Integration of Virtual Prototyping and Building Information Modeling to Optimize the Construction Site Planning and Management

Objectives: To study the possibility of using Building Information Modeling (BIM) to improve the efficiency of site planning and management spaces within the buildings. Method: In order to achieve this study, the literature and previous research in the field has been consulted, as well as the collection of data by interviewing a group of engineers through collection of documents and maps of the project and taking realistic picture of the buildings. Findings: By analyzing case study and finding real area data by using BIM technology and comparing it with the international standards for space management on campus, there was a significant difference. And it was found that there is no international standard used in the design of these spaces and it is not suitable for student and staff and teaching staff. The researcher recommends the use of BIM technology in the early stage of the project to reduce the design error in space management and the efficiency of this technology and it’s easy to obtaining information and data. Although there are obstacles to the use of BIM practices due to the reasons for the scarcity of qualified personal in this field, in the near future there will be the usage of large scale BIM system in the construction industry. Integration of facility management and building information modeling (BIM)

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate factors that impede the integration of facilities management (FM) into building information modeling (BIM) technology. The use of BIM technology in the commercial construction industry has grown enormously in recent years. Its application to FM, however, is still limited. The literature highlights issues that hinder BIM–FM integration, which are studied and discussed in detail in this paper.Design/methodology/approachA review of literature is conducted to identify and categorize key issues hampering the application of BIM to FM. This paper has also designed a questionnaire based on a literature review and surveyed FM professionals at two industry events. Using the collected responses, these issues are analyzed and discussed using non-parametric statistical analyses.FindingsA total of 16 issues are identified through the literature review of 54 studies under the four categories of BIM-execution and information-management, technological, cost-based and legal and contractual issues. The results of the survey of FM professionals (with 57 complete responses) reveal that the single most important issue is the lack of FM involvement in project phases when BIM is evolving.Originality/valueThe findings of this study could assist the construction industry (e.g. building-material and equipment manufacturers, design professionals, general contractors, construction managers, owners and facility managers) with creating guidelines that would help in BIM–FM integration. BIM is a virtual database that contains important design and construction information, which can be used for effective and efficient life cycle management if building data are captured completely and accurately with a facility manager’s involvement.

Use of technology building information modeling (BIM) in the design high building based on innovative approach design CAE/CAD

BIM -Building Information Modeling is the fastest growing branch of modern design and execution of buildings. In the United States there is a requirement for the design of public investment based on BIM technology. Similar legislation has been in force since 2016 in the United Kingdom. In the near future also in Poland, it becomes necessary the use of BIM technology in the implementation of investments co-financed from European Union funds. The most important part in the design of a new approach is the treatment of structural parts of geometric models, as information which can be changed as desired at any stage of design. A comprehensive approach to design using BIM technology allows to carry out a series of analysis and collision detection at the design stage, in order to reduce costs at the stage of execution of the investment. The paper presents the design of the structural part of a reinforced concrete building, multi-storey in BIM technology. It uses an innovative design approach, enabling the analysis of the object using CAD (Computer Aided Design), which previously was based BIM method and a new approach based on the method of CAE (Computer Aided Engineering), which permit the object generated in BIM, static-strenght analysis. The article presents opportunities and benefits of BIM methods, using innovative design CAE/CAD.

A Project-Based Quantification of BIM Benefits

In the construction industry, research is being carried out to look for feasible methods and technologies to cut down project costs and waste. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is certainly currently a promising technology/method that can achieve this. The output of the construction industry has a considerable scale; however, the concentration of the industry and the level of informatization are still not high. There is still a large gap in terms of productivity between the construction industry and other industries. Due to the lack of first-hand data regarding how much of an effect can be genuinely had by BIM in real cases, it is unrealistic for construction stakeholders to take the risk of widely adopting BIM. This paper focuses on the methodological quantification (through a case study approach) of BIM's benefits in building construction resource management and real-time costs control, in contrast to traditional non-BIM technologies. Through the use of BIM technology for the dynamic querying and statistical analysis of construction schedules, engineering, resources and costs, the three implementations considered demonstrate how BIM can facilitate the comprehensive grasp of a project's implementation and progress, identify and solve the contradictions and conflicts between construction resources and costs controls, reduce project over-spends and protect the supply of resources.
