Turning towards voyeurism: Discussion of Schreiber’s the hidden and the seen: Art as an intersubjective medium

ABSTRACT This paper discusses the manuscript “The Hidden and the Seen: Art as an Intersubjective Medium.” The author used artwork in psychoanalytic treatment to explore exhibitionism. Additionally, this paper will explore the use of artwork to analyze the conversion of trauma into voyeurism. It highlights various ways to incorporate art, focusing on how a patient’s fixation can be harmful, reparative, and pleasurable.

Trans Young Adults’ Building Communities: Narratives and Counternarratives of Identity and World Making

This paper draws on a three-year inquiry, in which I lived alongside three trans young adults amid their unfolding lives. I used narrative inquiry, a relational methodology that holds relationship central, to explore asset-building processes within relational learning. This article showcases participants’ use of artworks, stories, and counterstories to understand experiences and engage communities. Additionally, this study highlights how trans young adults transform their identities at the intersections of race, citizenship, ableism, and health. This research demonstrates the complexity of trans: identity formation; intersectional tensions, and creative possibilities; and, performativity of intersectionality and identities across multiple communities’ spaces and places.

Six avenues for engendering creative environmentalism

The ubiquitous use of artworks (e.g., paintings, music, films) in environmental activism has been shown to trigger specific cognitive processes as well as changes in personal values and behaviours. There is less understanding of whether (or how) gender-differentiated environmental claims and gender-transformative initiatives are voiced and promoted through art and cultural expressions. Using network analysis, this paper comprehensively reviews ninety-eight years of peer-reviewed literature on gender and environmental activism. We identify six avenues of gendered artistic activism (or ‘artivism’) on environmental issues that communities have pursued in the past. We present a non-prescriptive description of each avenue based on key references in the literature. A gendered lens on artistic activism makes visible the power of different groups to act, be they women, men, LGBTQ or other collectives, their chosen (or available) scopes of creative action when engaging with environmental protection and their thematic foci. A highlight of the study is the significant presence of younger demographics, including children and students in environmental artivism. Finally, we discuss how gendered artivism expands our understanding of environmental action, putting our results in conversation with well-known current environmentalism(s).

Why and How Should Cognitive Science Care about Aesthetics?

Empirical aesthetics has found its way into mainstream cognitive science. Until now, most research has focused either on identifying the internal processes that underlie a perceiver's aesthetic experience or on identifying the stimulus features that lead to a specific type of aesthetic experience. To progress, empirical aesthetics must integrate these approaches into a unified paradigm that encourages researchers to think in terms of temporal dynamics and interactions between: (i) the stimulus and the perceiver; (ii) different systems within the perceiver; and (iii) different layers of the stimulus. At this critical moment, empirical aesthetics must also clearly identify and define its key concepts, sketch out its agenda, and specify its approach to grow into a coherent and distinct discipline.

Promoting Aesthetic Experiences in Science Lessons: A Proposal for Instruction

Science education motivates students to be problem solvers who utilize scientific knowledge for the social problems that they encounter in their lives. However, for better solutions for the problem, just knowledge of scientific concepts would not be enough because students need to approach problems aesthetically also. Understanding social, cultural, and sociological bases of the problem and the values of people who own the problem should be considered in the solution. Therefore, that brings the need for aesthetic experiences in science education as well as cognitive experiences. From the Deweyan approach, an experience is an experience when it is supported by human values. The main characteristics of aesthetic experiences are that they transform abstract concepts into living ideas because the process makes people make sense of the parts, link to the whole, and perceive the world from different perspectives. Because they are not an absolute must, artworks are essential elements for the aesthetic experiences. With the use of artworks in instruction, students can have aesthetic experiences by transforming abstract concepts into living ideas and solve social problems more effectively. The study aims to connect the cognitive and aesthetic aspects of science and promote aesthetic experiences by using an artwork. A framework based on Deweyan aesthetic was used for pedagogical suggestions. With the use of the framework both cognitive and aesthetic perspectives were emphasized for social problems, and the concept of electrostatics and the interaction between science and society is underlined for the instruction.

Türkiye’de 1960’lı yıllarda, özellikle uluslararası üslup ile inşa edilen pek çok mimari yapıda sanat eserlerine sıkça yer verildiği dikkat çekmektedir. Genellikle mimari tasarım ile sanatsal üretim sürecinin paralel gittiği projelerde, başka bir deyişle mimar ve sanatçının iş birliği ile ortaya çıkan çalışmalarda eserin, yapının asli ögesi olarak çeşitli mekânsal ilişkiler kurduğu ve bu ilişkiler üzerinden izleyici ile iletişime geçtiği görülmektedir. Sanatçı, bir mimari bağlam içinde üretim yaptığı durumlarda eseri de kavramsal olarak bağlam ile ilişkilendirmiş ya da fiziksel özellikleri -ölçüleri, konumu, ışık-renk ilişkileri- aracılığıyla o mekâna ait kılmış olabilmektedir. Her iki durumda da izleyici algısı mekânsal veriler üzerinden şekillenmektedir. Bu çalışmada ele alınan dönemin önemli sanatçılarına ait seramik pano ve rölyefler; yıllar içinde yıkım, yeniden yapım ya da yenilenme gibi nedenlerle farklı konumlarda ve mekânlarda yeniden sergilenmeye başlanmıştır. Konu ile ilgili örnekler üzerinden, eserin parçası olduğu yapı ile kurduğu kavramsal ilişkilerin incelenmesi amaçlanmakta; eserlerin mimari bağlamından koparılarak başka bir yere taşınması ile bu ilişkilerin ne şekilde değişmiş olduğu sorgulanmaktadır.

Joseph wright and the ENCANTADASGrotto: the potentialities of an interelation proposal for the teaching of science

This article presents the results of a qualitative research, based on four paintings by Joseph Wright that portray a cave near Naples painted in 1774 and in the Grotto of the Encantadas-Ilha do Mel State of Paraná in Brazil. In order to promote scientific literacy and also visual literacy from image reading, we developed four didactic sequences for the teaching of sciences for the second cycle of elementary school based on the thematic caves. These sequences were applied to students after class activities at the João XXIII Institute, an institution that serves children at social and economic risk in the city of Ponta Grossa, in the interior of the State of Parana. Data collection took place through observation, audio recordings, photographic records and materials produced by students. The main findings showed that the use of Joseph Wright's art works and the photographs of Gruta das Encantadas in the didactic sequences was an effective strategy to provide scientific knowledge, develop image reading skills as a means to establish a connection between sciences and arts. The findings also show that the use of art works by Joseph Wright as strategy for classroom activities contributed for the development of students’ creativity, rationality, and environmental awareness, by focusing specifically on the protection of cave environments and for meaningful learning in the scope of science and arts, as well as the interelation between these areas.

"I Left the Museum Somewhat Changed": Visual Arts and Health Ethics Education.

A common goal of ethics education is to equip students who later become health practitioners to not only know about the ethical principles guiding their practice, but to also autonomously recognize when and how these principles might apply and assist these future practitioners in providing care for patients and families. This article aims to contribute to discussions about ethics education pedagogy and teaching, by presenting and evaluating the use of the visual arts as an educational approach designed to facilitate students' moral imagination and independent critical thinking about ethics in clinical practice. We describe a sequence of ethics education strategies over a 3 year Doctor of Physiotherapy program, focusing on the final year professional ethics assessment task, which involved the use of visual arts to stimulate the exploration of ethics in healthcare. The data (in the form of student essays about their chosen artwork) were analyzed using both thematic and content analysis. Two key themes centered on emotional responses and lateral thinking. The use of artwork appeared to facilitate imaginative, emotional, and conceptual thinking about ethics and clinical experience (both past and future). This study provides some evidence to support the effectiveness of the use of the visual arts in promoting students' recognition of ethical dimensions within their clinical experience and reflection on their emerging professional identity. As one student noted, she left the museum "somewhat changed."

MATH AND ART CONVERGENCE FOR EDUCATION

According to worldwide surveys (such as PISA and TIMSS), European students often lack both mathematical and key basic competencies in science and technology. The mean scores for mathematics obtained by students are below the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development average (OECD). The learning of the mathematics literacy enables students to contribute effectively in actual society, enhancing their employment prospects. This paper intends to describe an innovative learning and teaching approach, actually in the development phase, in the field of mathematics for 14-16 years old students through the combination of current approaches used in Europe (such as inquiry based learning and technology-enhanced learning) and the Asian one, the Singapore’s method based on three phases, concrete-pictorial-abstract, through the use of artworks. This intends to allow the development of a more effective educational and training environment for teachers and their students who will benefit from the use of more attractive and fun pedagogical tools in the study of mathematics.

Canines in the Classroom: Boccaccio, Dante, and the Visual Arts

The article has two primary objectives: it presents an analysis of the representation of animals in selected Italian literary works; and it utilizes that analysis as an example of how to incorporate the visual arts in teaching literature in the undergraduate classroom. The literary works discussed include Dante’s Inferno and the myth of Romulus and Remus as preparation for Boccaccio’s Decameron, specifically novelle IX.7 and V.8, with a thematic focus on portrayals of canines. The article argues that the use of artwork from the medieval and Renaissance periods, such as statuary, illustrated manuscripts, images in bestiaries, and works by Botticelli and other well-known artists, can be used to complement and reinforce interpretations of the texts, and are a powerful and effective tool in the learning process.

The limits of legal pluralism

Sionaidh Douglas-Scott's book, Law after Modernity, outlines a sophisticated theory of legal pluralism. The book makes extensive use of artworks and other cultural images to draw out law's social meanings. I explore Douglas-Scott's comments on the relationship between art and law through reference to Michèle Le Doeuff's work on the philosophical imaginary. I then address her views on legal pluralism. Douglas-Scott argues that legal positivism's failure to adequately capture the complexity of contemporary legal orders makes legal pluralism preferable as a descriptive theory of law. However, she distances herself from claims that legal pluralism also offers a normatively desirable view of law, arguing that it needs to be supplemented by a theory of critical legal justice. Douglas-Scott shows a commendable awareness of legal pluralism's descriptive insights and its normative limits, but her account of critical legal justice remains highly tentative. What, then, lies in the unmapped terrain beyond the limits of legal pluralism? I suggest the answer lies in overcoming the central assumption shared by both legal positivism and legal pluralism: the idea of law as a product of human authority.

3-D route-planning support for navigation in a complex indoor environment

Three-dimensional (3-D) route-planning support offers a promising solution to overcome problems with wayfinding in complex indoor environments. An experiment was conducted to test the effect of 3-D route-planning support in a realistic setting, a large hospital building, during normal operation. Forty participants performed navigation tasks either with (n = 20) or without (n = 20) 3-D route-planning support. Support resulted in faster navigation, more use of artwork specifically installed to aid wayfinding, fewer navigation errors, less disorientation and less anxiety. In addition, participants used different strategies for wayfinding: without navigation support they used signs and route colour, but with navigation support they used not only the artwork, but also the existing furniture and other landmarks. The acceptance of 3-D route-planning support was high. Overall, the results support the value of 3-D route-planning support.

Use of Arts among Single Mothers in Taiwan: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Research Study

Use of art-painting, literary works, poetry, music and film–as expressions of life have the potential to explain the everyday world of human beings. The aim of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the lived world of 15 single mothers in Taiwan through the processes of in-depth semi-structured interviews and the use of art work. Van Manen (1997)’s analysis was used for data analysis. In addition to using interviews as the traditional method of data gathering, we also included art work as representations of participants’ lived experience of the phenomenon. The inclusion of art work provided a rich repository of information that not only complemented the interview data (by adding a different dimension to the participants’ experiences of the phenomenon of being a single mother in Taiwan), but also lent support for the use of art work in human science research.

Recoding painting? Repeated use of artwork in Cindy Sherman and Sam Taylor Wood

Taking a cue form theoretical studies on adaptation, we propose to draw a relationship with similar insights emerged in some recent art historical studies.Through a theoretical analysis of two contemporary artworks by Cindy Sherman and Sam Taylor Wood, both based on earlier visual tradition, we will consider the effects of re-production of images as the re-production of deferred meaning. The intersystemic quotation such as painting - tableau vivant – coding by photographic and video technologies, works at different levels and creates high degree of ambiguity between the media and the images involved. This mediation produces disturbing effects on the viewer who has to recognize in the artwork an contaminated and elusive visual tradition, which displays a latent meanings and (re)activates memory images. In order to understand these complex layers it is necessary to consider the work and its subtext in terms of a shared temporality in which images, media and extratextual memories, interact.

Pleasure, provocation and value in hospital art: The evaluation of the University College London Hospitals arts programme

This article discusses a psychosocial study of a hospital arts programme informed by the principles of ‘realistic evaluation’, which assumes that individuals’ responses to artworks reflect their circumstances and are influenced by social context. The methodology combined experience-distant and experience-near methods – an observation scale and elicitation of views and perceptions. The findings are discussed in relation to a model of public value, widely debated in the cultural sector, that distinguishes intrinsic, institutional and instrumental dimensions. It is argued that intrinsic value enables institutional value to be fully realized in that it enables people to make personally meaningful use of artworks that at the same time create a sense of connection to the institution as a community. However, since intrinsically good art may also challenge some people, this raises the question of what kind of provocation is acceptable in health-care contexts.

Using visual methodologies to explore contemporary Irish childhoods

Drawing on the use of children-centred visual research methods, primarily artwork and photography, in Irish primary schools, this article compares the use of artwork and photography as visual methods and outlines the theoretical frameworks within which the data produced can be made meaningful. The ways in which the social worlds of migrant children both converged with, and diverged from, those of children who were born in Ireland are also explored.

Use of artwork as a visual processing modality in group treatment of chemically dependent minority women

Using artwork in group treatment of chemically dependent minority women can enhance introspection and involvement during the recovery process. This paper examines the use of 14 reproductions to help women identify feelings evoked by the art and to reconnect with feelings that chemical dependency can dampen. Art reproductions were used during the last 4 sessions of a 12-session experiential group therapy program with 17 minority women who were being treated for chemical dependency. Participants’ responses to the reproductions and effects of this visual processing modality on the women's recovery from their addictions were the focus of this study. As the women learned to verbalize their feelings and reflect on their situations through interpretative interactions with visual art, they gained insight into their feelings and issues they faced in their recovery from chemical dependency.
