Understanding of the asymmetric twin-stroll radial turbine under steady and pulsating inlet conditions

Utilize asymmetrical twin-scroll turbines (ATSTs) to achieve high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) with a single scroll while optimizing the other scroll’s design for engine scavenging optimization. ATST performance prediction relies heavily on understanding the turbine flow mechanism, which always faces the challenge posed by time-dependent non-uniform intake. This paper studied its performance and flow field under steady and unsteady intake conditions for a production ATST. Firstly, the steady performance of the ATST with different asymmetries (ASYs) under different scroll pressure ratios (SPRs) is investigated via the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Results demonstrate that the distribution relationship between SPR and turbine flow parameter (MFP) has a certain symmetry based on SPR = 1. For efficiency, the imbalance of inlet conditions will lead to the reduction of turbine efficiency. Moreover, the ASY has little effect on the turbine’s efficiency under the condition of SPR = 1. Also, the unsteady CFD simulations are conducted under pulsating inlet conditions with different scroll averaged pressure ratios (SAPRs). The results show that the highest efficiency was achieved at an ASY of 0.5 under a SAPR of 1.2 conditions, and the maximum, minimum, and average efficiencies were 1.9%, 1.5%, and 0.9% higher than those at an ASY of 0.83. The turbine’s flow field at the optimal incidence angle point is analyzed. The secondary flow vortex in the volute of an ASY of 0.5 is more robust, and the volute outlet ‘s total pressure loss is more significant. However, a relatively good incidence angle is obtained at the rotor inlet, and the loss in the rotor flow field is more minor. Therefore, the turbine efficiency with an ASY of 0.5 is higher.

Unsteady CFD simulation of a rotor blade under various wind conditions

Wind and gusts can significantly impact the performance of rotors and turbines. The transient behavior of the rotor should be carefully examined to account for these effects. This paper investigates the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of a rotor blade under different wind conditions, such as direction, speed, and angle. A 3D transient Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation using the dynamic mesh technique is performed to analyze the rotor dynamics. The unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) equations with the k-ω SST turbulence model are solved. The rotor blade used for this study is the U15XXL Combo KV29 industrial blade, which has not been numerically analyzed before. The results show that wind in the same direction as the rotation reduces the thrust more than lateral or opposite wind. Lateral wind with a speed lower than 5 m/s decreases the blade performance, but higher speeds increase it. Higher lateral wind speeds also cause two peaks in the torque curve, forming a butterfly wing shape in the polar torque plot and multiple extrema in the torque curve with increasing speed. The maximum thrust shifts slightly to the left with increasing lateral wind speed. The lateral angle does not affect the average thrust produced in one blade revolution but only causes a spatial shift. The thrust production decreases as the angle approaches the opposite direction of rotation. The motion amplitude decreases, and the curve becomes smoother as this angle increases. A nearly straight line similar to no side wind is observed at 60 and 90 degrees, which is attributed to the constant effective angle of attack during the rotation cycle.

Pressure-Sensitive-Paint-Driven Hybrid Unsteady Compressible Flow Simulation

A hybrid unsteady compressible computational fluid dynamics simulation (CFD) driven by pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) data is proposed, and the concept is demonstrated in two dimensions. By imposing the wall pressure acquired with PSP as the Dirichlet boundary condition, an unsteady compressible Euler equation solver is marched together with integral boundary-layer equations in time. As a result, an entire flowfield that fits the PSP measurement is created in the CFD domain. This concept is tested by taking PSP data from a past article of a wind-tunnel test using the NASA CRM65 airfoil and the steady and unsteady capabilities of this data-driven hybrid simulation are demonstrated for transonic flows in two dimensions, and the convergence characteristics are also investigated. It is found that a steady shock position, which cannot be accurately predicted by the Euler equation solver with a boundary layer, can be rectified by the hybrid simulation. Moreover, unsteady shock motion due to buffeting can also be captured well by the hybrid simulation.

Data-Driven Unsteady Aerodynamic Modeling for Fluid–Structure Interaction

The piston theory class of simplified aerodynamic models that link body deformation to localized pressure fluctuation with respect to a mean steady state is attractive for modeling purposes as they constitute a computationally efficient model to calculate the unsteady pressure response on deforming bodies. However, as piston theories are valid for flow regimes where M>1.5, they are inaccurate for modeling the aerodynamic response associated with aeroelastic phenomena in subsonic or low-supersonic flow regimes. Unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are used to learn the unsteady pressure response, and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is applied to the error between the CFD-computed pressure fluctuation and the piston-theory-predicted pressure fluctuation. This process is performed on two-dimensional and three-dimensional flow domains over various flow regimes. For both scenarios, the DMD analysis learns dominant spatial modes in the error that constitute low-order models, which may be used to improve the pressure response and are confirmed to be physically relevant. A method for computing aeroelastic stability with these leading modes is discussed and applied to fluid–structural beam and panel configurations. The results are compared against prior numerical and experimental investigations to quantify the improvement in prediction obtained by the DMD-augmented piston theory.

Investigation on unsteady characteristics of flow separation in a supercritical carbon dioxide centrifugal compressor

As one of the core components of supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) closed Brayton cycle, the efficiency of S-CO2 centrifugal compressor plays a crucial role. Affected by the special thermophysical properties of S-CO2 fluid, the flow mechanism of S-CO2 centrifugal compressor is different from the centrifugal compressor of conventional fluid, such as air. Previous studies have found that the flow separation within the flow domain of this kind of compressor is easily to occur downstream the pressure surface. Many steady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies have been conducted on the S-CO2 centrifugal compressors, but few studies focused on the unsteady evolution of this flow separation. In this paper, the unsteady CFD simulation is carried out in the flow passage of a S-CO2 centrifugal compressor. The solution domain of CFD simulation includes compressor blades, diffuser and volute. The performance and the unsteady flow behavior of S-CO2 centrifugal compressor is obtained. Under low flow rate conditions, the flow separation on the pressure surface of the blade of S-CO2 centrifugal compressor is more likely to occur, causing the decrease of compressor performance. This flow separation has strong unsteady characteristics, which deteriorates several times during a rotation cycle, meanwhile the vortex shedding happens. At the time steps of vortex shedding, the pressure near the trailing edge of the impeller fluctuates greatly, indicating that this unsteady flow separation brings a large flow loss to the S-CO2 centrifugal compressor.

Effect of blade number on rotor efficiency and noise emission at hovering condition

The configuration of rotors significantly impacts the aerodynamic efficiency and noise emission of multicopters. To date, there are no general guidelines regarding how many blades a rotor should use for optimal aerodynamic performance and minimum noise emission. From the perspectives of aerodynamics and acoustics during the hovering condition, two key parameters, i.e., figure of merit (FM) and overall sound pressure level (OASPL), are evaluated to determine the optimal blade number (BN). The number of blades chosen in this study is BN = 2–6, which is largely observed in commercial multicopters. A genetic algorithm was developed to optimize blade design for each BN-rotor configuration. The individuals are evaluated by steady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and acoustic analogy for optimizations, and the detailed analyses of optimal ones are further explored by unsteady CFD simulations. The planform of the baseline blade is maintained, and the radial distribution of twist angles is the parameter for optimization. While generating the same thrust, the value of FM keeps increasing as the number of blades increases from 2 to 4, after which the FM value reaches a plateau. The value of OASPL keeps decreasing as the number of blades increases. The reason for the FM and OASPL value trends vs blade number is explained with the numerical simulation results, and a general design rule is suggested at the end.

Sensitivity of compressor aerodynamic noise prediction to time setup of CFD simulations using hybrid CAA method

This paper numerically studies the aerodynamic noise of a centrifugal compressor in a vehicle engine turbocharger. The hybrid CAA approach based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and acoustic boundary element method (BEM) in the prediction of aerodynamic noise is validated. The impacts of the time setup of unsteady CFD simulations on the prediction of compressor flow and aerodynamic noise are discussed. The results show that a large time step would result in unreliable numerical results, in which severe reverse flow and flow separation can be observed. The middle time step 2 deg. can get accurately predicted results while reducing the computational efforts. It is also found that a large total simulation time with a reasonable time step is helpful to improve predicted noise spectra. Moreover, the overall sound pressure level discrepancy of aerodynamic noise between numerical prediction and experimental measurement is less than 0.5 dB.

3D CFD model for the analysis of the flow field through a horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT)

With the world’s growing demand for energy, renewable energy production has become important in providing alternative sources of energy and in reducing the greenhouse effect. This study investigates the aerodynamics and performance of the WG/EV100 micro–Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The complexity of VAWT aerodynamics, which is inherently unsteady and three-dimensional, makes high-fidelity flow models extremely demanding in terms of computational cost, limiting the analysis to mainly 2D Computational Fluid-Dynamics (CFD) approaches. This article explains how to perform a full 3D unsteady CFD simulation of HAWT. All main parts of the WG/EV100 HAWT were designed in SOLIDWORKS. Only the blade design was reverse engineered due to the unavailability of the CAD model and the complexity of its geometric characteristics. The impeller blade is scanned using a Coordi-nate Measuring Machine (CMM), and the obtained 3D scan data are exported from the PC-DMIS software to GEOMAGIC design X to obtain a CAD model of the blade.

Impacts of Inlet Circumferential Distortions on the Aerodynamic Performance of a Transonic Axial Compressor

Distortion, such as total pressure distortion, is a common phenomenon at the inlet of an axial compressor. Nonuniform inflow can greatly affect the aerodynamic performance and the stability of the compressor. In this paper, a sinusoidal distortion model is used at the inlet. Then, a series of unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations with a full-annulus model is conducted. Three kinds of the total pressure distortions, such as circumferentially covering 60, 120, and 180-degs sectors above 70% span of the blade at the inlet section, are adopted. Based on the results, how the rotating stall cells can be induced and developed under the different inlet conditions is understood during the stall process. It is found that the secondary stall cell is more easily triggered when the circumferential range of total pressure distortion is increased. Meanwhile, the influence of the rotating distortion on the compressor performance is also studied and a dangerous distortion rotating speed is observed.

Accelerating unsteady aerodynamic simulations using predictive reduced-order modeling

Unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are essential in aerospace engineering because they can provide high-fidelity flow fields to better understand transient physics, such as vortex shedding. However, unsteady full-order CFD simulations must repeatedly march the flow solution with a small time step and are computationally expensive. Reduced-order modeling (ROM) is a powerful approach to alleviate the above issue by decomposing the unsteady flow solutions into spatial modes and temporal coefficients, making the unsteady flow easier to simulate. Existing ROM studies mostly focused on parametric problems that use a large number of simulation samples to train an offline model (parametric ROM). Although the trained model can quickly predict any flow fields within the parameter space, the computational cost for generating the massive unsteady simulation samples is still high, especially when the number of parameters and their ranges increase. To further address the high-cost issue, we develop an efficient predictive ROM approach to accelerate individual unsteady aerodynamic simulations. We use the Galerkin projection approach to reduce the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations, along with the discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM) for decreasing the computation cost for nonlinear terms. In addition, we develop an efficient ROM formulation that correlates the temporal coefficients between the momentum, pressure, and turbulence equations, allowing solving fewer ROM equations at the prediction stage. The intrusive nature of the predictive ROM enables using the first portion of unsteady flow data to accelerate the rest of the simulation; no massive offline samples are needed. We use the stalled turbulent flow over the NACA0012 airfoil as the benchmark and evaluate the predictive ROM's speed and accuracy for challenging non-equilibrium scenarios caused by a large sudden change in flow conditions. The run time ratios between CFD and ROM (including the calculation of basis vectors and projection matrices) range between 13 and 45. The pressure, drag, lift, pitching moment, and flow fields simulated by the ROM approach agree reasonably well with the CFD references at various times. The proposed predictive ROM approach is, in principle, applicable to different airfoil geometries and flow conditions and can be integrated into a design optimization process for accelerating unsteady aerodynamic simulations.

Two-Temperature Modeling of Nonequilibrium Relaxation and Dissociation in Shock-Heated Oxygen

Two-temperature models for coupled vibrational relaxation and dissociation in shock-heated oxygen are assessed using low-uncertainty measured data from reflected shock tube experiments. A computationally efficient multistep technique is developed to model the unsteady dynamics of shock reflection in a relaxing and dissociating gas. The developed technique is then benchmarked through comparison with unsteady computational fluid dynamic simulations. Results from the benchmarking effort demonstrate that the adopted multistep modeling procedure accurately captures the dominant gas dynamic effects influencing the state of the test gas at the measurement location. A parametric study is then performed to assess several combinations of possible two-temperature modeling approaches for nonequilibrium oxygen dissociation. The current assessment demonstrates that the widely adopted Park model is inconsistent with the measured data, while the recently developed modified Marrone and Treanor (MMT) model demonstrates promising agreement with the data. The results of the present study clearly indicate that the MMT model is more appropriate for two-temperature modeling of nonequilibrium oxygen dissociation than the legacy Park model. Patterns in the parametric comparison also suggest that the approximate treatment of non-Boltzmann vibrational state distributions within the MMT model may require improvement.

Dynamic Response of Circulation Control for Step and Sinusoidal Inputs

A numerical study of the dynamic performance of a circulation controlled (CC) airfoil is performed to explore the feasibility of using circulation control as means of gust suppression. Steady and unsteady two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were initially validated using published data. The dynamic performance of a CC airfoil was subsequently assessed. The response of the CC airfoil to step and sinusoidal inputs were obtained from unsteady CFD simulations. It was found that the actuation speed of circulation control is significantly faster than a conventional mechanical flap at the same flight condition. Additionally, the lift response to a step input was found to be very similar to the Küssner function.

Dynamic characteristic modeling of left ventricular assist devices based on hysteresis effects

ObjectiveThe purpose of this study is to develop a new model for the dynamic characteristics of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) interacting with the cardiovascular system under constant-speed modes. MethodsA new hysteresis model is established on the basis of the hysteresis effect and turbomachinery principles. The simulation results from the hysteresis model were compared with the inertia model. The in-vitro experiment results of a centrifugal pump (from literature) and the unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation results of an axial pump were used as the benchmarks. ResultsCompared with the inertia model, at the partial support mode, the relative estimation error of the time to the maximum and minimum pump flow (Q) in the hysteresis model decreased at least 16.3% cardiac cycle (Tc) in the centrifugal pump and at least 1.9% Tc in the axial pump, indicating its ability to simulate more realistic Q fluctuations. Moreover, the hysteresis model could predict an accurate time distribution of different Q. ConclusionThe hysteresis model provides a general calculation method for simulating the dynamic characteristics of constant-speed LVADs under interaction with the cardiovascular system. It is more accurate than the inertia model. SignificanceThe hysteresis model is helpful for the rapid estimation of unsteady dynamic characteristics in absence of a physical pump prototype at the preliminary design stage.

Performance enhancement of savonius wind turbine by multicurve blade shape

ABSTRACT This study proposes a novel blade configuration, made with a multicurve profile, to further maximize the advanced benefits and the performance of a Savonius turbine for energy harvesting applications. The advantages of the presently designed blade are proved by a detailed analysis of the flow mechanism and the performance through a sequence of two-dimensional (2D) unsteady computational fluid dynamics simulation. The remarkable finding states that the main blade section with a length ratio of 0.9 combined with an elliptical auxiliary section effectively enhances the positive wind flow phenomena around the blade, especially for the returning position, which either smooths the flow or reduces the pressure on the blade’s convex side. As a result, greater torque is obtained by the present configuration, responding to the improvement of the power generation to 0.24 – about 5.5% at the low TSR = 0.8 and up to 0.28 - about 185% at the high TSR = 1.5 over the conventional configurations. The effectiveness of the presently designed blade is further proved with more than 20% improvement in self-staring speed through six degrees of freedom analysis. The results above state a high potential application of the turbine with the presently designed blade for renewable energy applications and for supporting vulnerable communities without access to electricity.

Towards Dynamic Velocity Prediction of NACRA 17

NACRA 17 is a small foiling catamaran used in Olympic sailing. Sailing in the NACRA 17 is truly unsteady, especially in the foiling conditions. Dynamic velocity prediction has gained a lot of attention in recent years due to the unsteady nature of foiling sailboats. Different approaches have been applied to predict the motions of foiling or skimming boats in unsteady conditions. Typically, the aerodynamic forces are computed by the quasi-steady theory assumption. Static coefficients are used, and the applied velocities are corrected with boat motions. The hydrodynamic forces of a fully foiling boat can be computed in a similar fashion, but this method fails to include the effect of changes in the free surface as well as added mass. This paper proposes an approach where dynamic coefficients of the NACRA 17 hydrofoils are determined based on unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations with a free surface. In the simulations the foil is moved in prescribed motions in one degree of freedom (DOF) at a time and dynamic coefficients are extracted for different frequencies of motion. All coefficients are combined in a coupled system of equations, and the equations can be solved in 6 DOFs in the time domain. Test scenarios with time-varying conditions are simulated and compared with full dynamic CFD simulations. The initial investigation of the approach shows promising results, but more investigations are needed to validate the approach and to identify possible limitations.

VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION OF CFD SIMULATIONS WITH FULL-SCALE SHIP SPEED/POWER TRIAL DATA

Verification and validation of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of a full-scale ship trial are presented in this study. Speed/power trials were carried out according to industry standards for three different power settings. Measured data was corrected for environmental effects to obtain ideal trial runs. Ship-scale unsteady RANS CFD simulations were conducted. Grid refinement sensitivity was evaluated for each power setting. Furthermore, time-step sensitivity was assessed for the selected grids. Finally, assumptions regarding symmetry condition and turbulence model were verified. Simulated results were in good agreement with the test data, thus illustrating the capabilities of numerical methods to determine ship performance at full scale.

Impact of Trailing Edge Overhang Length on the Loss Characteristics of Fully Cooled Transonic Nozzle Guide Vanes

Abstract The trailing edge (TE) design of a cooled high-pressure (HP) nozzle guide vane (NGV) requires consideration of both cooling and aerodynamic performances. Two designs are in common use: the centered-ejection design, in which coolant is ejected through a slot in the TE with roughly symmetrical suction-side (SS) and pressure-side (PS) TE tips; and the SS-overhang design, in which the SS and PS TE tips are staggered. This second design has been favored in recent years because it has been presumed to be aerodynamically advantageous. In this article, we re-examine this assumption by studying a parametric design set between these two design extremes. We do this using extensive high-fidelity experimental measurements performed at engine-scaled conditions (matched Mach number, Reynolds number, and coolant-to-mainstream pressure ratio) on a full-annular cascade of real engine parts. To provide insight into the mechanisms affecting loss, we use complementary unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. We analyze the changes in the flow structure, local loss coefficient distribution, wake mixing rate, average profile loss coefficient, and base pressures.

Experimental and numerical validation of a Francis turbine draft tube designed for mitigation of pressure fluctuations

This paper presents an experimental and numerical investigation of the internal flow in a Francis turbine draft tube previously designed for minimizing pressure fluctuations and energy losses in off-design conditions. The design of the draft tube geometry is based on an original approach combining Design of Experiments and steady/unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of the draft tube internal flow. The proposed method provides new insight on the influence of the draft tube geometry on the flow dynamic behaviour on one hand and enables the determination of a geometry promoting flow stability and hydraulic performance on another hand. CFD simulations of the internal flow in the final geometry showed promising results in terms of flow stability compared with the initial geometry designed by conventional CFD-aided methods. A reduced-scale model of the prototype machine featuring the final draft tube geometry is finally installed and tested in laboratory. Tests include performance and pressure fluctuations measurements over the complete operating range. The analysis of the results shows that the draft tube flow remains globally stable over the complete part-load range with pressure fluctuations amplitude lower than 1% of the net head. It is also shown that the dominant pressure component at the runner outlet in the draft tube cone is of synchronous nature. The physical mechanisms of excitation are finally highlighted by analysis of unsteady CFD simulation results.

Dynamics of a microsphere inside a spherical cavity with Newtonian fluid subjected to periodic contractions

Mechanical forces on the nucleus of a biological cell can play a significant role in its positioning within the cell. Some models for the migration of the nucleus are based on biochemical signals, which have a very slow response, and others on the mechanical actions of direct pushing–pulling forces, relying on the cytoskeleton and cell contractility. In the present work, hydrodynamic drag forces, produced by the surrounding membrane movement and acting on a spherical model of the nucleus, are numerically investigated. The space distributions of force and drag resistance are estimated by unsteady three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulations. These distributions are functions of sphere size and position, and they are fitted to mathematical models. Dynamic simulations are performed using these mathematical models to compute the trajectory of the microsphere under the action of thousands of position-dependent pushing–pulling forces. A characteristic time is estimated by linearization of the equation, and a dynamic simulation is performed with one-dimensional finite differences. With this approach, it takes a few minutes to simulate several hours of nuclear migration. It is shown that in the long term, nuclei tend to migrate to the center of the cell, especially when it is small compared with the cell size. The model presented here, based exclusively on hydrodynamic interaction in a Newtonian fluid, shows that pushing–pulling forces on the nucleus, produced by periodic contractions of the cell membrane, will cause it to migrate to the center of the cell in a manner that is in agreement with experimental observations.

Unsteady Simulation of the Internal Flow in a Tubular Pump Considering Tip-Leakage Flow

Tip-leakage vortex is a commonly-seen phenomenon in tubular pump runners because there will be always gap between blade and pump shroud. In the operation process, the tip-leakage vortex is unstably varying. Pressure in the vortex core is relatively low and may induce cavitation in extreme conditions. The operation stability will be strongly impacted. As an effective tool, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can be used in predicting the vortical flow in pumps. In this study, unsteady CFD simulation is conducted with the visualization of tip-leakage vortex using the Q criterion. The design-load condition is mainly studied. The temporal characters, their frequency domain features and their spatial distributions are fully analysed. This study will help understanding the tip-leakage vortical flow in the tubular pump and enhance the operation stability of low-head pumping stations.
